COVID-19 has truly affected most of the world over the past many months, perhaps more than any other event in recent history. In the wake of this pandemic are patients, family members, and various types of care providers, all of whom share different levels of moral distress. Moral conflict occurs in disputes when individuals or groups have differences over, or are unable to translate to each other, deeply held beliefs, knowledge, and values. Such conflicts can seriously affect healthcare providers and cause distress during disastrous situations such as pandemics when medical and human resources are stretched to the point of exhaustion. In the current pandemic, most hospitals and healthcare institutions in the United States have not allowed visitors to come to the hospitals to see their family or loved ones, even when the patient is dying. The moral conflict and moral distress (being constrained from doing what you think is right) among care providers when they see their patients dying alone can be unbearable and lead to ongoing grief and sadness. This paper will explore the concepts of moral distress and conflict among hospital staff and how a system-wide provider wellness programme can make a difference in healing and health.

Our preferences are influenced by the opinions of others. The past human neuroimaging studies on social conformity have identified a network of brain regions related to social conformity that includes the posterior medial frontal cortex (pMFC), anterior insula, and striatum. Since these brain regions are also known to play important roles in reinforcement learning (i.e., processing prediction error), it was previously hypothesized that social conformity and reinforcement learning have a common neural mechanism. However, although this view is currently widely accepted, these two processes have never been directly compared; therefore, the extent to which they shared a common neural mechanism had remained unclear. This study aimed to formally test the hypothesis. The same group of participants (n = 25) performed social conformity and reinforcement learning tasks inside a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner. Univariate fMRI data analyses revealed activation overlaps in the pMFC and bilateral insula between social conflict and unsigned prediction error and in the striatum between social conflict and signed prediction error. We further conducted multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) for more direct evidence of a shared neural mechanism. MVPA did not reveal any evidence to support the hypothesis in any of these regions but found that activation patterns between social conflict and prediction error in these regions were largely distinct. Taken together, the present study provides no clear evidence of a common neural mechanism between social conformity and reinforcement learning., The present study tested the hypothesis that social conformity would share the same neural mechanism as reinforcement learning. While univariate results showed large activation overlaps in the posterior medial frontal cortex (pMFC), anterior insula, and striatum between social conflict and prediction error, multi‐voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) showed that their activation patterns within each of these regions were largely distinct rather than similar. The results suggest that the idea that social conformity and reinforcement learning share common neural mechanisms may be too simplistic.

Recent research on temporary work has suggested that temporary work experiences vary greatly in quality. In light of concerns about diminished quality of some temporary work experiences, we suggest that temporary workers may experience a variety of stressful work situations that could precipitate detrimental outcomes not only for these workers, but also for their co-workers and organizations. Using a multi-wave survey of temporary workers, this study examines the relationship between economic, interpersonal, and organizational stressors and counterproductive work behaviour (CWB). Specifically, we hypothesize that economic stressors (operationalized as economic hardship and job insecurity), interpersonal conflict and organizational constraints will predict the extent to which temporary workers perform CWB via emotional exhaustion and moral disengagement pathways. Three waves of data show that temporary workers experiencing higher levels of economic hardship, interpersonal conflict and organizational constraints reported greater emotional exhaustion, which was linked to increased frequency of CWBs. Additionally, higher levels of job insecurity and interpersonal conflict were related to higher levels of moral disengagement, which related to increased frequency of CWBs. These findings highlight relationships of different stressors with emotional and cognitive reactions that may trigger CWB in temporary workers.

THE case conference is a staple of academic life in psychiatry. Ostensibly, it provides the teaching hospital with a forum for considering issues of diagnosis, treatment, and interview technique. On an inpatient service, the case conference also holds the potential for uncovering the covert dynamics at work in the treatment setting; it is the task of the consultant who leads the conference to see that this potential is met. A major part of the consultant's work is bringing to life the hidden agendas of the conference. These hidden agendas are usually unconscious needs or wishes of the staff which are played out in relation to the consultant. Staff members attempt to influence the consultant to fulfill one of three basic wishes: the wish that the consultant ally himself with a certain faction; the wish that he sanction a position that has already been adopted; the wish that he expose or punish those whom the staff members are afraid to confront directly. These agendas provide the key to identifying central conflicts which obstruct therapeutic work. Although most often these conflicts appear between staff and patient, they also arise among staff members as well as between the unit staff and the hospital administration. This paper will examine examples of the dynamics of these hidden agendas and show how they reflect the influence which the patient has on the staff.

One of the typical campus scenes is the social interaction between college couples, and the lesson couples must keep learning is to adapt to each other. This fMRI study investigated the shopping interactions of 30 college couples, one lying inside and the other outside the scanner, beholding the same item from two connected PCs, making preference ratings and subsequent buy/not-buy decisions. The behavioral results showed the clear modulation of significant others’ preferences onto one’s own decisions, and the contrast of the “shop-together vs. shop-alone”, and the “congruent (both liked or disliked the item, 68%) vs. incongruent (one liked but the other disliked, and vice versa)” together trials, both revealed bilateral temporal parietal junction (TPJ) among other reward-related regions, likely reflecting mentalizing during preference harmony. Moreover, when contrasting “own-high/other-low vs. own-low/other-high” incongruent trials, left anterior inferior parietal lobule (l-aIPL) was parametrically mapped, and the “yield (e.g., own-high/not-buy) vs. insist (e.g., own-low/not-buy)” modulation further revealed left lateral-IPL (l-lIPL), together with left TPJ forming a local social decision network that was further constrained by the mediation analysis among left TPJ–lIPL–aIPL. People often have to resolve many conflicts at the same time in their everyday lives. So far, the mechanisms of conflict resolution when multiple conflicts co-occur are not clear. This study examined the neurocognitive mechanisms of cognitive-control adaptation when two sources of conflict co-occur. To this aim, we measured event-related potentials in a task combining the Stroop conflict (the meaning and the color of a word differ) and the word-word conflict (two different words are presented). The word-word conflict was expected to tap the same stage of stimuli processing (i.e., semantics) and to modulate the magnitude of the Stroop conflict. Behavioral data showed that the word-word conflict facilitated the resolution of the Stroop conflict, which indicates the within-trial adaptation of cognitive control. ERP data showed two additive effects (the Stroop conflict and the word-word conflict) in the N450 time window, which suggests that at the neural level these two conflicts were processed in parallel (simultaneously and independently of each other). The N450 finding demonstrates that the control system flexibly and rapidly adapts to different types of conflict by modulating information processing in ways that individually address each source of conflict. Crucially, processing the conflicts in parallel substantially improved the efficiency of the control system. Overall, the study shows that the cognitive-control system can act as a collection of parallel but independent mechanisms; it thereby advances our understanding of goal-directed behavior.

Humans’ remarkable capacity to flexibly adapt their behaviour based on rapid situational changes is termed cognitive control. Intuitively, cognitive control is thought to be affected by the state of alertness, for example, when drowsy we feel less capable of adequately implementing effortful cognitive tasks. Although scientific investigations have focused on the effects of sleep deprivation and circadian time, little is known about how natural daily fluctuations in alertness in the regular awake state affect cognitive control. Here we combined a conflict task in the auditory domain with EEG neurodynamics to test how neural and behavioural markers of conflict processing are affected by fluctuations in alertness. Using a novel computational method, we segregated alert and drowsy trials from two testing sessions and observed that, although participants (both sexes) were generally sluggish, the typical Conflict Effect reflected in slower responses to conflicting information compared to non-conflicting information was still intact, as well as the moderating effect of previous conflict (Conflict Adaptation). However, the typical neural markers of cognitive control-local midfrontal-theta band power changes-that participants show during full alertness were no longer noticeable when alertness decreased. Instead, when drowsy, we found an increase in long-range information sharing (connectivity) between brain regions in the same frequency band. These results show the resilience of the human cognitive control system when affected by internal fluctuations of alertness, and suggest neural compensatory mechanisms at play in response to physiological pressure during diminished alertness.Significance StatementThe normal variability in alertness we experience in daily tasks is rarely taking into account in cognitive neuroscience. Here we studied neurobehavioral dynamics of cognitive control with decreasing alertness. We used the classic Simon Task where participants hear the word “left” or “right” in the right or left ear, eliciting slower responses when the word and the side are incongruent - the conflict effect. Participants performed the task both while fully awake and while getting drowsy, allowing for the characterisation of alertness modulating cognitive control. The changes in the neural signatures of conflict from local theta oscillations to a long-distance distributed theta network suggests a reconfiguration of the underlying neural processes subserving cognitive control when affected by alertness fluctuations.

Mindfulness interventions have been linked to improved sport performance and executive functions; however, few studies have explored the effects of mindfulness on sport performance and executive functions simultaneously. This study sought to examine whether a mindfulness training program would affect both the endurance performance and executive functions of athletes. In addition, event-related potentials (ERPs) associated with the Stroop task were assessed to investigate the potential electrophysiological activation associated with the mindfulness training. Applying a quasiexperimental design, forty-six university athletes were recruited and assigned into a five-week mindfulness training program or a waiting list control group. For each participant, the mindfulness level, endurance performance assessed by a graded exercise test, executive functions assessed via Stroop task, and N2 component of ERPs were measured prior to and following the 5-week intervention. After adjusting for the preintervention scores as a covariate, it was found that the postintervention mindfulness level, exhaustion time, and Stroop task accuracy scores, regardless of task condition, of the mindfulness group were higher than those of the control group. The mindfulness group also exhibited a smaller N2 amplitude than the control group. These results suggest that the five-week mindfulness program can enhance the mindfulness level, endurance performance, and multiple cognitive functions, including executive functions, of university athletes. Mindfulness training may also reduce conflict monitoring in neural processes.

Ambivalent affective states, such as bittersweetness, nostalgia, and longing, which are felt as having both positive and negative aspects, are an important component of human experience but have received little attention. The most influential theoretical frameworks in affective neuroscience focus largely on univalenced states. As a result, it is not known whether ambivalent affect corresponds to a simultaneously positive and negative valenced state or whether it results from a rapid vacillation between positive and negative states. Here we hypothesize that ambivalent affect involves both mechanisms, that is, rapid vacillation and simultaneity of positive and negative affect, albeit at different neurobiological levels. Rapidly vacillating univalent emotions could give rise to an ambivalent feeling, a mechanism that depends on brainstem nuclei that facilitate rapid action programs of emotional behavior while inhibiting opposing behaviors. This reciprocal inhibition prevents organisms from simultaneously implementing responses to conflicting emotions but also allows for rapid switching between emotions triggered by counterfactual thinking and rapid reappraisal of situations. We propose that as these transitions occur and respective interoceptive information reaches the insular cortex, further processing of this “emotional moment” would allow separate emotional events to be experienced as one “mixed” and integrated feeling.

Investigations of fear conditioning have recently begun to evaluate contextual factors that affect attention-related processes. However, much of the extant literature does not evaluate how contextual fear learning influences neural indicators of attentional processes during goal-directed activity. The current study evaluated how early attention for task-relevant stimuli and conflict monitoring were affected when presented within task-irrelevant safety and threat contexts after fear learning. Participants (N = 72) completed a Flanker task with modified context before and after context-dependent fear learning. Flanker stimuli were presented in the same threat and safety contexts utilized in the fear learning task while EEG was collected. Results indicated increased early attention (N1) to flankers appearing in threat contexts and later increased neural indicators (P2) of attention to flankers appearing in safety contexts. Results of this study indicate that contextual fear learning modulates early attentional processes for task-relevant stimuli that appear in the context of safety and threat. Theoretical and clinical implications are discussed.

Paper introduces Conflict Analysis (CA), an online self-guided therapeutic assessment. CA combines a diagnostic self-report scale with narrative exercises and self-analytical tasks. CA automatically generates detailed diagnostic records and frameworks for changes.To evaluate therapeutic and diagnostic benefits associated with CA over time.This online study compared CA over 2 weeks on outcome measures predicting psychotherapy outcome. Novel scale measuring perceived diagnostic benefit and perceived therapeutic benefit was delivered at post and follow-up. Cohort (n = 59, average age = 35, 50% female) was either in therapy or interested to start therapy in near future.Repeated-measure ANOVAs suggest that scores significantly changed on measures predicting negative affect, depression, performance and appearance self-esteem, insight, and growth initiative. Agreement rates on items measuring perceived diagnostic and therapeutic benefits were at least 74.5% for both post and follow-up.Evidence supports further exploration of CA as a self-guided diagnostic and therapeutic resource.Key pointsResults demonstrate feasibility and utility of online self-guided therapeutic assessment.Described model is associated with increased perceived diagnostic and therapeutic benefits.Described model illustrates therapeutic benefits over time.Results demonstrate that even self-guided assessment can have therapeutic implications.

Decisions under threat are crucial to survival and require integration of distinct situational features, such as threat probability and magnitude. Recent evidence from human lesion and neuroimaging studies implicated anterior hippocampus (aHC) and amygdala in approach–avoidance decisions under threat, and linked their integrity to cautious behavior. Here we sought to elucidate how threat dimensions and behavior are represented in these structures. Twenty human participants (11 female) completed an approach–avoidance conflict task during high-resolution fMRI. Participants could gather tokens under threat of capture by a virtual predator, which would lead to token loss. Threat probability (predator wake-up rate) and magnitude (amount of token loss) varied on each trial. To disentangle effects of threat features, and ensuing behavior, we performed a multifold parametric analysis. We found that high threat probability and magnitude related to BOLD signal in left aHC/entorhinal cortex. However, BOLD signal in this region was better explained by avoidance behavior than by these threat features. A priori ROI analysis confirmed the relation of aHC BOLD response with avoidance. Exploratory subfield analysis revealed that this relation was specific to anterior CA2/3 but not CA1. Left lateral amygdala responded to low and high, but not intermediate, threat probability. Our results suggest that aHC BOLD signal is better explained by avoidance behavior than by threat features in approach–avoidance conflict. Rather than representing threat features in a monotonic manner, it appears that aHC may compute approach–avoidance decisions based on integration of situational threat features represented in other neural structures. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT An effective threat anticipation system is crucial to survival across species. Natural threats, however, are diverse and have distinct features. To be able to adapt to different modes of danger, the brain needs to recognize these features, integrate them, and use them to modify behavior. Our results disclose the human anterior hippocampus as a likely arbiter of approach–avoidance decisions harnessing compound environmental information while partially replicating previous findings and blending into recent efforts to illuminate the neural basis of approach–avoidance conflict in humans.

Since its development, there has been growing utilization of the Safewards package of interventions to reduce conflict and containment in acute mental health wards. The current study used the opportunity of an implementation of Safewards across one large metropolitan local health district in New South Wales Australia to evaluate change. Specific aims of the study were to measure, for the first time in Australia, changes in shift‐level reports of conflict and containment associated with Safewards introduction, and to measure any association with change in the violence prevention climate using a tool validated for use in the current study setting. Eight of eleven wards opted‐in to participating in Safewards. Implementation was conducted over a period of 24 weeks (4‐week preparation, 16‐week implementation, and 4‐week outcome phases). Conflict and containment were measured using the Patient–Staff Conflict Checklist Shift Report and violence prevention climate using the VPC‐14. From 63.2% response rate, the mean (SD) reported conflict and containment incidents per shift fell from 3.96 (6.25) and 6.81 (5.78) to 2.94 (4.22) and 5.82 (4.62), respectively. Controlling for other variables, this represented reductions of 23.0 and 12.0%, respectively. Violence prevention climate ratings did not change. Safewards was associated with significant improvements in all incidents of conflict and containment, including the most severe and restrictive types, and this was largely unaffected by outcomes measure response rate, shift or weekday/weekend reporting, or number of ward beds. Safewards is increasingly justified as one of very few interventions of choice in adult, acute mental health services and should be widely utilized.

Objective We sought to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current methods for conflict resolution and the ways in which women surgeons would prefer workplace conflicts to be adjudicated. Summary of background data Interprofessional workplace conflicts are poorly studied, particularly for women in surgery. These conflicts may negatively impact surgical team dynamic and be detrimental to patient safety. Moreover, workplace conflicts and their management are a proposed driver of decreased professional satisfaction and achievement. How women surgeons experience workplace conflicts and how these are managed remains unexplored. Methods We conducted 30 semi-structured interviews with women surgeons across the United States who had experienced workplace conflict that resulted in action by a nonphysician. Surgeons were diverse with respect to demographics, specialty, and institutional settings. Through thematic analysis using NVivo, we analyzed and reported patterns within the data. Results Although the majority of women asserted resilience in how they engage with these situations, many also cited ways in which these events could better be adjudicated. Recommendations included (1) more direct conflict resolution, (2) more transparency in reporting processes, (3) greater opportunity to address complaints, (4) explicit policies for events that repeatedly result in workplace conflict, and (5) divorcing interpersonal complaints from patient safety reporting mechanisms. Conclusion This study motivates and informs best practices around adjudication of workplace conflict to help protect women surgeons and nonclinicians. Going forward, best practices should include more objective criteria for how conflicts are adjudicated. Continued efforts at an institutional level are needed to help mitigate inequities against women surgeons.

Objectives Little is known about the lived experiences of Muslim Americans and what it means to identify as "Muslim American" within the sociopolitical context of Islamophobia. Although xenophobia, racism, and religious discrimination have been shown to impact identity development, it is unclear how Muslim American youth negotiate and make sense of their identities against this backdrop. Method A qualitative, phenomenological approach guided the research design to explore how 11 Muslim American late adolescents/emerging adults make sense of their Muslim American identities. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Social Identity Theory (SIT) to guide this investigation, we sought to explore the narratives of what it means to be members of the Muslim American community and how participants experienced cultural belongingness. Results Participants identified four key components that are central to their essence of being Muslim American. These elements were, having (a) a "built-in community," (b) "a lot of ethnic diversity," (c) "a religious practice," and (d) "a feeling that we all have to be this very united group." Conclusions Our findings capture the complexities of what it means to be Muslim American, particularly given the heterogeneity within the community. Islamophobia contextualized their meaning-making process by perpetuating group homogeneity as the problem and solution. Clinical and research implications highlight the need to recognize intersectionality and systemic oppression as part of the identity negotiation. Pressures from within and outside of the community converged to impede participants' feelings of cultural belongingness and identity exploration. In this paper, we analyse the conditions under which the COVID‐19 pandemic will lead either to social order (adherence to measures put in place by authorities to control the pandemic) or to social disorder (resistance to such measures and the emergence of open conflict). Using examples from different countries (principally the United Kingdom, the United States, and France), we first isolate three factors which determine whether people accept or reject control measures. These are the historical context of state‐public relations, the nature of leadership during the pandemic and procedural justice in the development and operation of these measures. Second, we analyse the way the crisis is policed and how forms of policing determine whether dissent will escalate into open conflict. We conclude by considering the prospects for order/disorder as the pandemic unfolds. Publisher PDF

This study investigated the relationships between received neighboring behavior (i.e., informal mutual assistance and information sharing among neighbors) and the general health of low-income residents in a mixed-income community. A conservation resource theory perspective was applied. Survey data were selected from a self-reported questionnaire of 247 low-income residents in a mixed-income community of China. A 2-wave panel design was used to test the hypothesized relationships among the studied variables, and the interval between both measurements was 5 weeks. Structural equation modeling was adopted to examine the proposed hypotheses. The findings showed that received neighboring behavior decreased individual work-family conflict, while showing no significant differences between the mediating effects of work-family conflict. This study has important implications for neighbor behavior and work-family conflict.

Growing concerns about intensive information and communication technology (ICT) use led to abundant research on its debilitating effects on employees' abilities to meet family demands. Drawing on the stressor-strain model, we conducted a daily diary study to investigate how different types of daily ICT demands experienced during work hours and after work influence work-family conflict (WFC) in the evening. We collected data from 98 full-time employees (793 day-level observations) for 10 consecutive workdays to understand employees' work-nonwork interface experiences, namely, negative spillover and role conflict. First, we examined a multilevel mediation model to test the negative spillover effect of on-the-job ICT demands on WFC in the evening via negative affect (NA) at the end of the workday. Second, we investigated the effects of off-the-job ICT demands on WFC to provide evidence of role conflict in the nonwork domain. Further, we tested the protective role of boundary control in these phenomena. The multilevel analysis results revealed that different types of ICT demands experienced at work have idiosyncratic impacts on WFC. Also, while extended availability after work hours yields greater WFC, this link was weaker for the employees who perceive high boundary control.

Emotional conflict adaptation is an important process of cognitive control in human behavioral regulation. The face-word Stroop task and the emotional Simon task were employed to explore the correlation between fluid intelligence and neural processes of emotional conflict adaptation using event-related potential (ERP) techniques. Thirty-two intellectually average children (mean age of 10.72 years) and thirty-four intellectually gifted children (mean age of 10.86 years) participated in the present study. The behavioral results indicated that both intellectually gifted and average children showed reliable emotional conflict adaptation effects (CAEs) on reaction times (RTs) and error rates. However, the two IQ groups differed in the magnitude of error rates during emotional conflict adaptation. The electrophysiological results further revealed that the IQ differences in emotional conflict adaptation were mainly associated with emotional conflict detection processes as demonstrated by the frontal N2-CAE values. The two IQ groups did not differ in early P3 or late P3 responses during emotional conflict resolution processes. The gifted and average children showed different patterns during cognitive control processes when facing emotional Simon conflicts and emotional Stroop conflicts. The current study emphasizes the importance of frontal function during cognitive control of emotional information from the perspective of individual differences.

The rates of suicide and self-harm in Northern Ireland are high, and have increased from 143 registered suicides in 1996 to 313 in 2010 and 318 in 2015. This Review summarises the epidemiology of suicidal behaviour, as well as the evidence from a small number of studies that have identified risk factors associated with high suicide rates in Northern Ireland. These risk factors were mental illness, trauma, exposure to the conflict known as the Troubles, deprivation, relationship problems, employment difficulties, financial difficulties, being LGBT, childhood adversities, and alcohol or drug use. We highlight the key challenges and opportunities for suicide prevention, emphasising a so-called lifespan approach. More needs to be done to address the relationship between substance misuse and suicide. Future research and prevention efforts should also focus on the transgenerational effect of the conflict, youth suicide, suicide prevention in minority groups, and the criminal justice context. The provision of and access to suicide-specific psychosocial interventions need to be prioritised, more support for people in crisis is required, as well as interventions for mental illness. Protect Life 2, the national suicide prevention strategy, needs to be implemented in full. Given the legacy of conflict in Northern Ireland, all suicide prevention efforts should be trauma informed.

Affective responses to emotional expressions critically depend on the expresser's group membership: Facial displays by in-group members elicit concordant affective behavior in the perceiver whereas out-group expressions elicit discordant behavior. A prominent explanation for this response divergence assumes that initial affective responses are elicited by the social message signaled by facial displays (social intentions account). In this study we tested an alternative account, proposing that specific combinations of group membership and facial expression (i.e., positive expressions by negatively evaluated out-group members or negative expressions by positively evaluated in-group members) result in affective conflict (processing conflict account). In 4 experiments White participants executed simple 2-choice categorization tasks on pictures of emotions expressed by Middle-Eastern (out-group) or White persons (in-group). We observed consistent performance decrements to affectively incongruent compared with congruent faces. Moreover, consistent with the processing conflict account, experienced conflict from affectively incongruent faces reactively induces recruitment of cognitive control resources. Conflict adaptation effects occurred (a) irrespective of the type of conflict and (b) also for emotional facial expressions for which the underlying social message does not vary with group membership. In summary, these results substantiate the processing conflict hypothesis. Consequences for the prominent social intentions account are discussed. We judge each other every day using demographic characteristics (such as gender and race/ethnicity), and these social identities shape our lives in profound ways. The impacts of demographic diversity in perioperative teams are poorly understood, and mixed results are reported in other team-based work settings. Drawing from decades' worth of organizational behavior literature, the authors propose a model of critical factors related to interplays between diversity, communication, and conflict, all which take place in a hierarchical environment influenced by power differences. Evidence-based recommendations are provided, aimed at maximizing benefits of diversity in perioperative teams while minimizing negative consequences.

Objective This study aimed to (a) validate the factor structure for a measure of peer conflict in youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D); (b) determine empirical patterns of peer conflict in terms of context (friend vs. nonfriend) and content (diabetes-specific vs. general) within a broader context of socio-demographic factors; and (c) examine how these patterns and socio-demographic factors relate to adolescents’ T1D adherence, quality of life, and glycemic control (HbA1c). Methods Youth with T1D (N = 178), ages 12–18, reported demographic variables, illness duration, adherence, quality of life, and peer conflict. HbA1c was extracted from medical records. Confirmatory factor analysis validated a factor structure for the Diabetes Peer Conflict Scale (DPCS) and latent profile analysis (LPA) determined profiles of peer conflict. Results A four-factor structure emerged for the DPCS: general friend conflict, general nonfriend conflict, T1D friend conflict, and T1D nonfriend conflict. Using these factors as indicators in LPA, four profiles were confirmed: (a) Low Overall Conflict (LOC) and (b) Moderate Overall Conflict (MOC), (c) a Nonfriend Conflict (NFC), and (d) a Friend Conflict (FC) profile. Differences were not identified between diabetes specific versus general conflict. Socio-demographic variables did not predict class membership. The LOC profile reported the highest quality of life and best glycemic control, whereas the FC profile reported the lowest adherence behaviors. Conclusions: Peer conflict uniquely contributes to diabetes adaptation above and beyond socio-demographic and illness factors.

Research on the dysfunctions of power for group interactions is covered in this review. While individuals generally benefit from possessing power, groups often are plagued by power struggles when one or more individuals within the group possess power, such as in groups with high intra-group power dispersion (e.g. a clear job title hierarchy or differences in salary levels) or a high average level of member power (e.g. management teams, all-star sports teams). In such groups with at least one powerful member, research shows that intragroup power struggles are likely and detract from group outcomes, including performance, viability, and creativity. Groups have the highest quality interactions when they minimize the salience of power within their group by helping individuals expand the 'power pie' in group, such as by identifying multiple sources of power within oneself or the group and having power-holders whom can dynamically flex the perceived power-distance within the group.

With a growing body of relationship research relying on dyadic data (i.e., in which both members of a couple are participants), researchers have raised questions about whether such samples are representative of the population or unique in important ways. In this research, we used two large data sets (Study 1: n = 5,118; Study 2: n = 5,194) that included participants with and without a romantic partner participating to examine if co-participation status has substantive relationship implications. Results showed that co-participation status predicted breakup even after controlling for other known predictors such as satisfaction, although the effect weakened over time (Study 2). There was also tentative evidence that factors such as conflict may be differentially related to breakup among couples in which one versus both partners participated. These findings raise caution in interpreting effects found in dyadic studies and highlight the need to be mindful of potential bias in recruitment.

Gait initiation is a daily challenge even for healthy individuals as it requires the timely coupling between the automatic anticipatory postural adjustment (APA) and the voluntary step according to the context. Modulation of this motor event has been thought to involve higher level brain control, including cognitive inhibitory circuitries. Despite the known participation of the supplementary motor area (SMA) in the modulation of some parameters of APA, the participation of areas controlling inhibition during gait initiation still needs to be investigated. In this study, the hemodynamic responses of the SMA and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) were assessed using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during a gait initiation task under cognitive conflict to select the foot to step (congruent [CON] and incongruent [INC] conditions). The older group (OG) showed worse inhibitory control than the young group (YG) along with more impairments in APA parameters. OG also had a lower amplitude of hemodynamic responses in both areas than YG in the INC. The INC increased the correlation between SMA and DLPFC only in the YG. Aging seems to impair the interaction between the hemodynamic responses of SMA and DLPFC, which influences APA performance in gait initiation under cognitive conflict.

Religious ideology and extremism have had an increasing influence on political agendas in the United States and much of the developed world in the past 60 years, with right-wing ideology becoming more prevalent this decade. This article serves as a review of studies investigating the correlations between political ideology, religiosity, right-wing authoritarianism, ingroups/outgroups, and prejudice in an attempt to describe and understand the well-established links between these dimensions. We discuss several group-level theories including Terror Management Theory, Social Identity Theory, Realistic Group Conflict Theory among others to frame the intercorrelations of these constructs in an effort to better understand the underlying mechanisms that drive individuals to embody religious and political beliefs. We then discuss individual-level cognitive and psychological differences such as intelligence, cognitive flexibility, and specific biological and neurological limitations of brain function that may influence people to adopt certain religious and political beliefs. Through a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms of religious and political extremism, we may be better equipped to assuage the fear and denigration that is associated with many of these beliefs.

Theory of mind is the ability to understand others’ beliefs, mental states, and knowledge. Perspective-taking is a key part of this capacity, and while previous research has suggested that calculating another’s perspective is relatively straightforward, executive function is required to resolve the conflict between the self and that other perspective. Previous studies have shown that theory of mind is selectively impaired by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). However, it has been hitherto unclear as to which specific aspect of perspective-taking is impacted. The current study administered rTMS (N = 31 adult participants) to the DLPFC (active condition) and vertex (control condition) in a within-subjects design. Participants completed a L1 VPT task after each stimulation session, and focus (relative performance on self-perspective trials compared with other perspective trials) and conflict indices (relative ability to resolve competing self/other perspectives) were calculated. Results showed that stimulation of the DLPFC selectively impaired the conflict index, suggesting that the DLPFC may be causally related with the resolution of conflict between self and other perspectives, and that self-other interference may rely on domain-general processes.

Here, we asked how L2 speakers learn to process syntactic constructions that are in direct conflict between L1 and L2, in comparison to structures without such a conflict. To do so, we measured EEG during sentence reading in three groups of German learners of Dutch with different degrees of L2 experience (from 3 to more than 18 months of L2 immersion) as well as a control group of Dutch native speakers. They read grammatical and ungrammatical Dutch sentences that, in the conflict condition, contained a structure with opposing word orders in Dutch and German (sentence-final double infinitives) and, in the no-conflict condition, a structure for which word order is identical in Dutch and German (subordinate clause inversion). Results showed, first, that beginning learners showed N400-like signatures instead of the expected P600 for both types of violations, suggesting that, in the very early stages of learning, different neurocognitive processes are employed compared with native speakers, regardless of L1-L2 similarity. In contrast, both advanced and intermediate learners already showed native-like P600 signatures for the no-conflict sentences. However, their P600 signatures were significantly delayed in processing the conflicting structure, even though behavioral performance was on a native level for both these groups and structures. These findings suggest that L1-L2 word order conflicts clearly remain an obstacle to native-like processing, even for advanced L2 learners. 25 p.

Healthcare systems around the world are struggling to maintain a sufficient workforce to provide adequate care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Staffing problems have been exacerbated by healthcare workers (HCWs) refusing to work out of concern for their families. I sketch a deontological framework for assessing when it is morally permissible for HCWs to abstain from work to protect their families from infection and when it is a dereliction of duty to patients. I argue that it is morally permissible for HCWs to abstain from work when their duty to treat is outweighed by the combined risks and burdens of that work. For HCWs who live with their families, the obligation to protect one’s family from infection contributes significantly to those burdens. There are, however, a range of complicating factors including the strength of duty to treat which varies according to the HCW’s role, the vulnerability of family members to the disease, the willingness of family members to risk infection and the resources available to the HCW to protect their family. In many cases, HCWs in ‘frontline’ roles with a weak duty to treat and families at home will be morally permitted to abstain from work given the risks posed by COVID-19; therefore, society should provide additional incentives to maintain sufficient staff in these roles.

Objective：The moral and ethical issue is a great challenge to the development of autonomous vehicles. There may be distinctions between the choices made by an observer and a participant. The paper is designed to investigate whether drivers will sacrifice the fewest people to save more people in social dilemma, and whether human drivers would give priority to protecting pedestrians or self-protection in an emergency. Methodology: The experiment was conducted with a total of 50 participants assigned to three groups. Three experimental scenarios were designed and each of them contained a social dilemma. A driving simulator was used in this study to explore the choices of human drivers in social dilemma. In addition, the simulator results were compared with those of questionnaire survey. Result: In study 1, 73% of 22 participants swerved into the right lane to hit only one pedestrian for the safety of other five. In study 2 and 3, more participants chose to hit the barrier to protect the pedestrian. Conclusion: A conclusion can be drawn from the second and third group of experiments that most drivers consider not only their own safety, but the safety of pedestrians. Most of the participants intended to minimize the total amount of harm in social dilemma. The choice of crashing into barriers to protect a pedestrian can also be seen as a way to minimize the total amount of harm.

Task‐based functional neuroimaging methods are increasingly being used to identify biomarkers of treatment response in psychiatric disorders. To facilitate meaningful interpretation of neural correlates of tasks and their potential changes with treatment over time, understanding the reliability of the blood‐oxygen‐level dependent (BOLD) signal of such tasks is essential. We assessed test–retest reliability of an emotional conflict task in healthy participants collected as part of the Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression. Data for 36 participants, scanned at three time points (weeks 0, 2, and 8) were analyzed, and intra‐class correlation coefficients (ICC) were used to quantify reliability. We observed moderate reliability (median ICC values between 0.5 and 0.6), within occipital, parietal, and temporal regions, specifically for conditions of lower cognitive complexity, that is, face, congruent or incongruent trials. For these conditions, activation was also observed within frontal and sub‐cortical regions, however, their reliability was poor (median ICC

International audience; Current theories posit multiple levels of cognitive control for resolving conflict, including list-level control: the global or proactive biasing of attention across a list of trials. However, to date, evidence for pure list-level control has largely been confined to the Stroop task. Our goals were twofold: (a) test the generality of theoretical accounts by seeking evidence for list-level control in the letter flanker task, using an established method involving diagnostic items, and investigating the conditions under which list-level control may and may not be observed and (b) develop and test a potential solution to the challenge of isolating list-level control in tasks with a relatively limited set of stimuli and responses such as arrow flanker. Our key findings were that list-level control was observed for the first time in a letter flanker task on diagnostic items (Experiment 1), and it was not observed when the design was altered to encourage learning and use of simple stimulus–response associations (Experiment 2). These findings support the generalisability of current theoretical accounts positing dual-mechanisms or multiple levels of control, and the associations as antagonists to control account positing that list-level control may be a last resort, to conflict tasks besides Stroop. List-level control was also observed in the arrow flanker task using a modified design (Experiment 3), which could be extended to other conflict tasks with limited sets of stimuli (four or fewer), although this solution is not entirely free of confounds.

Cognitive control refers to the use of internal goals to guide how we process stimuli, and control can be applied proactively (in anticipation of a stimulus) or reactively (once that stimulus has been presented). The application of control can be guided by memory; for instance, people typically learn to adjust their level of attentional selectivity to changing task statistics, such as different frequencies of hard and easy trials in the Stroop task. This type of control-learning is highly adaptive, but its boundary conditions are currently not well understood. In the present study, we assessed how the presence of performance feedback shapes control-learning in the context of item-specific (reactive control, Experiments 1a and 1b) and list-wide (proactive control, Experiments 2a and 2b) proportion of congruency manipulations in a Stroop protocol. We found that performance feedback did not alter the modulation of the Stroop effect by item-specific cueing, but did enhance the modulation of the Stroop effect by a list-wide context. Performance feedback thus selectively promoted proactive, but not reactive, adaptation of cognitive control. These results have important implications for experimental designs, potential psychiatric treatment, and theoretical accounts of the mechanisms underlying control-learning. Background Creating a case formulation is an important and basic skill in psychotherapy meant to guide treatment. A patient’s interpersonal pattern is an essential part of a case formulation. Core Conflictual Relationship Theme (CCRT) is a well-known structured method to describe interpersonal patterns. The CCRT method is based on the assumption that humans display a central relationship theme, which is shown in most relationships as well as in the patient-therapist relation. The CCRT scoring is based on how the patient describes interactions with others, in therapy sessions or in a specific interview. These descriptions are transcribed. Raters then score the identified relational episodes by choosing elements from the clustered categories of Wishes, Response from Others and Response from Self. The method has shown high validity and reliability. Inter rater reliability is generally good: Cohen’s kappa ranging from 0.55 to 0.70. To decide CCRT pattern from transcribed material is time consuming and labour intensive This study investigates a labour- and timesaving version of the method. Methods This study aimed to investigate rater agreement in a simplified method of scoring the CCRT, based directly on live semi-structured dynamic interviews without transcribing the material. Fifty-two patients referred for psychotherapy in a clinical trial, were scored for CCRT pattern. Based on information that came forth during the two-hour interview, raters scored the patients choosing elements from the clustered categories of Wishes, Response from Others and Response from Self. More than one category in each component could be chosen without ranking. Five raters compared two by two were investigated. Inter rater reliability was measured by Cohen’s kappa. Results Mean kappa for Wishes, Response from Others and Response from Self was .33, .41 and .45 respectively. Mean kappa for CCRT in total was .41 among 5 raters. Conclusion In this simplified method to score the CCRT based on oral dynamic interviews, fair to moderate IRR was obtained. Whistleblowing has been examined from various angles over the past 40 years, but not yet as a matter of epistemology. Whistleblowing can be understood as resulting from the improper transmission of critical knowledge in an organization (eg, knowledge about poor care or wrongdoing). Using the sociology of ignorance, we wish to rethink whistleblowing and the failures it brings to light. This article examines how nurses get caught in the strategic circulation of knowledge and ignorance, which can culminate in acts of whistleblowing. The sociology of ignorance helps understand how whistleblowing is borne out of the complex and strategic circulation of knowledge and ignorance that spells multiple and intersecting epistemic positions for nurses. In particular, various organizational blind spots position nurses as untrustworthy and illegitimate speakers in the "business" of the organization. Organizational failings therefore remain concealed while nurses become hypervisible, both as faulty care providers and as problematic information brokers.

Adapted physical activity (APA) practitioners are encouraged to be reflexive practitioners, yet little is known about the moral dilemmas faced as they instruct inclusive physical activity or fitness programs. Professional landscape tensions may arise when diverse organizational demands, policies, traditions, and values merge. The study purpose was to explore how APA professionals experience and resolve moral discomfort in professional practice. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, seven APA professionals completed one-on-one semistructured interviews. The conceptual framework of relational ethics facilitated deep engagement with the professionals’ stories of navigating the ethical minefields of their practice. Four themes were developed from the thematic interpretative phenomenological analysis: The ass(et) of vulnerability, Friends or friendly? “We are fucked either way,” and Now what? Grappling with discomfort. The moral discomfort and strategies for resolution described by APA professionals highlighted the need for judgment-free pedagogical spaces where taken-for-granted practices can be contemplated and discussed.

A major barrier to the resolution of intergroup conflicts is the reluctance to acknowledge transgressions committed by one’s ingroup toward the outgroup. Existing research demonstrates that individuals are generally motivated to justify ingroup conduct and avoid experiencing guilt and shame about ingroup harmdoing. The current work explores the use of an analogy-based intervention to attenuate motivated reasoning in evaluations of ingroup harmdoing. Overall, across six studies, we find support for our hypothesis that considering a case of harmdoing in a removed context increases acknowledgment of an analogous case of ingroup harmdoing. We further explore why, and under what conditions, the analogy is effective in leading to increased acknowledgment of an ingroup transgression. We find that the effect of the analogy is mediated by the endorsement of moral principles specific to the domain of the transgression, suggesting that the mechanism involves a cognitive process of analogical reasoning.

Objective: To develop a Decision Quality (DQ) tool to measure parents’ DQ concerning ventilation tube (VT) insertion in their children. Method: Parental survey during 2017 to 2018 in a tertiary care pediatric otolaryngology clinic comparing a validated Decisional Conflict (DC) scale with a DQ instrument including Shared Decision-Making (SDM) scale, parental treatment goals, and knowledge about VT. Results: Of 100 parent participants, 83% were mothers and 14% were fathers. 94% elected VT insertion, 6% elected monitoring or deferred the decision. 44% of the patients were Conclusions: DQ, as measured with this tool, was higher when parents chose to place tubes. Our DQ instrument has potential use for study of why parents may decline VT when their child meets criteria for them.

We report results from a self-paced silent-reading study and a self-paced reading-aloud study examining ambiguous forms (heteronyms) of Russian animate and inanimate nouns which are differentiated in speech through word stress, for example, uCHItelja.TEACHER.GEN/ACC.SG and uchiteLJA.TEACHERS.NOM.PL.1 During reading, the absence of the auditory cue (word stress) to word identification results in morphologically ambiguous forms since both words have the same inflectional marking, -ja. Because word inflection is a reliable cue to syntactic role assignment, the ambiguity affects the level of morphology and of syntactic structure. However, word order constraints and frequency advantage of the GEN over both the NOM and the ACC noun forms with the - a/-ja inflection should pre-empt two different syntactic parses (OVS vs. SVO) when the heteronym is sentence-initial. We inquired into whether the parser is aware of the multi-level ambiguity and whether selected conflicting cues (case, word order, animacy) can prime parallel access to several structural parses. We found that animate and inanimate nouns patterned differently. The difference was consistent across the experiments. Against the backdrop of classical sentence processing dichotomies, the emergent pattern fits with the serial interactive or the parallel modular parser hypothesis.

The current study aimed to investigate whether induced anxiety, as well as trait anxiety, would lead to the failure of the regulation of emotional conflict. To measure the regulation of emotional conflict, the congruency sequence effect (CSE), which is a reduced effect of task-irrelevant distractor after incongruent trials compared to congruent trials, was observed while participants performed an emotional conflict task. In Experiment 1, participants performed the task in a safe context and a threatening context where a couple of electric shocks were given randomly on two consecutive days. In Experiment 2, participants performed the same task in either a safe or threatening context to avoid a potential carryover effect of the threat. The CSE observed in the safe context disappeared in the threatening context as well as in participants with high-trait anxiety level even without the threat. The findings imply that induced anxiety causes a failure of cognitive control that engenders the CSE in emotional congruency tasks. Moreover, such failure driven by participants' trait anxiety level might be a potential predisposing factor leading to anxiety disorders. Overall, these results suggest that induced anxiety, as well as trait anxiety, has an adverse impact on the sequential modulation of emotional conflict.

Understanding how partners' perceptions of their relationships predict couple distress and treatment outcomes can inform relationship interventions, because consensus on pretreatment relationship concerns has previously been related to better treatment outcomes. However, whether consensus specifically about relationship concerns is beneficial, or whether consensus more generally (e.g., about couples' strengths) is also related to distress and treatment outcomes, is unknown. Therefore, to replicate and extend previous findings, the present study examined how 740 couples' consensus regarding their relationship strengths and concerns was associated with their relationship distress and satisfaction from pre- to postintervention after completing the Relationship Checkup (an adaptation of the Marriage Checkup). Couples who presented with greater initial consensus on relationship concerns were less likely to be clinically distressed pre- and postintervention. Broadly, there were similar significant gains in relationship satisfaction from pre- to postintervention regardless of couples' initial level of consensus on concerns. However, when distress was modeled categorically, couples with lower initial consensus on concerns showed greater improvement in distress levels than did those with higher consensus. There were no associations between partners' consensus on strengths and their distress or satisfaction pre- or postintervention. Results indicate that a brief integrative relationship intervention can decrease relationship distress, even for couples that present with very different opinions about their relationship concerns. We designed 3 studies to identify postconflict behaviors that aid or hinder couple partners' emotional recoveries from their conflicts. For Study 1, we created a codebook of 18 postconflict behaviors, derived from 230 participants' daily descriptions of reconciliation efforts over a 3-week period. In Study 2, 340 MTurk participants used a checklist to report which of the 18 behaviors they engaged in following their most recent conflict with their partner. An orthogonal factor analysis revealed four dimensions of postconflict behavior: avoidance (e.g., sulk/withdraw), active repair (e.g., apologize), gain a new perspective (e.g., seek help from friends), and let go (e.g., drop the conflict). In Study 3, 226 cohabiting couples completed a 2-week diary for which they reported on their postconflict reconciliation strategies. Results revealed that postconflict behavior dimensions active repair and gain a new perspective predicted better postconflict residual affective recovery on days with conflict. In contrast, avoidance predicted poorer affective recovery on days with conflict. These results suggest that couples' behavior after conflict can facilitate or inhibit them from reconnecting intimately. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

Moral bioenhancement, nudge-designed environments, and ambient persuasive technologies may help people behave more consistently with their deeply held moral convictions. Alternatively, they may aid people in overcoming cognitive and affective limitations that prevent them from appreciating a situation’s moral dimensions. Or they may simply make it easier for them to make the morally right choice by helping them to overcome sources of weakness of will. This paper makes two assumptions. First, technologies to improve people’s moral capacities are realizable. Second, such technologies will actually help people get morality right and behave more consistently with whatever the ‘real’ right thing to do turns out to be. The paper then considers whether or not humanity loses anything valuable, particularly opportunities for moral progress, when being moral is made much easier by eliminating difficult moral deliberation and internal moral struggle. Ultimately, the worry that moral struggle has value as a catalyst for moral progress is rejected. Moral progress is understood here as the discovery and application of new values or sensitization to new sources of harm.

Although theoretical work proposes that emotion regulation development exhibits a positive growth trajectory across adolescence as prefrontal brain regions continue to mature, individual differences in developmental changes of emotion regulation merit elucidation. The present study investigates longitudinal links between the family environment (i.e., socioeconomic risk and family emotional context) and emotion regulation development. The sample included 167 adolescents (53% males) who were first recruited at 13–14 years of age and assessed annually four times. Latent change score analyses identified family emotional context as a mediator between socioeconomic risk and emotion regulation development, such that lower socioeconomic risk (higher socioeconomic status and lower household chaos) at Time 1 was associated with a more positive family emotional context (parent emotion regulation, parenting practices, and parent-adolescent relationship quality), which in turn was associated with larger year-to-year increases in emotion regulation. The findings highlight the important role of the family emotional context as a process explaining how the challenges of growing up in a household laden with socioeconomic risk may be associated with emotion regulation development during adolescence.

The various ways schools of psychotherapy relate to dreams have been marked by isolationism and mutual conflict rather than self-examination and then integrating the discoveries and methods of other schools. Jung's method was in opposition to Freud's psychoanalysis. Existential psychology was dismissive of Freud's and Jung's discoveries, while cognitive dream interpretation and cognitive therapy sought other roads entirely. In addition, scientific and neuropsychological dream research has been only insignificantly tied to the psychotherapeutic dream theories. These conflicts and the lack of a comprehensive dream theory has made it convenient for the current rationalist collective consciousness and treatment systems to reject the often times challenging knowledge about ourselves that dreams can provide. This paper describes how contemporary theories of complex cybernetic information networks can create an overriding, constructive framework for uncovering common traits within the above-mentioned branches of dream research and dreamwork. Within this framework, ten core qualities are delineated, supported by both therapeutic knowledge as well as scientific research: 1) Dreams deal with matters important to us; 2) Dreams symbolize; 3) Dreams personify; 4) Dreams are trial runs in a safe place; 5) Dreams are online to unconscious intelligence; 6) Dreams are pattern recognition; 7) Dreams are high level communication; 8) Dreams are condensed information; 9) Dreams are experiences of wholeness; 10) Dreams are psychological energy landscapes. For each core quality I describe short dreamwork sequences from my own practice and a schematic image of how I perceive the overriding interaction between systems in the dreaming brain. For each core quality recommendations for practical dreamwork are provided. La psychologie existentielle prenait de haut les découvertes de Freud et de Jung, pendant que l’interprétation cognitive du rêve et la thérapie cognitive cherchaient des voies complètement différentes. De plus, la recherche scientifique et neuropsychologique sur le rêve a été très peu liée aux théories psychothérapeutiques du rêve. Ces conflits, ainsi que l’absence d’une théorie globale sur le rêve, ont facilité le rejet par la conscience collective rationnelle actuelle et par le système de traitement de la connaissance sur nous souvent exigeante que nous apporte le rêve. Cet article décrit comment les théories contemporaines des réseaux d’information cybernétique complexe peuvent créer un cadre fondamental et constructif pour dévoiler les traits communs entre les branches de recherche sur le rêve et de travail sur le rêve mentionnées ci-dessus. Dans ce cadre, dix qualités essentielles sont définies selon la connaissance thérapeutique et la recherche scientifique: 1) Les rêves s’occupent des problèmes qui nous importent, 2) Les rêves symbolisent, 3) Les rêves personnifient, 4) Les rêves sont des essais effectués dans un espace sans danger, 5) Les rêves sont connectés à l’intelligence inconsciente, 6) Les rêves sont une reconnaissance des formes ou des schémas, 7) Les rêves sont des communications de haut niveau, 8) Les rêves sont de l’information condensée, 9) Les rêves sont des expériences de globalité, 10) Les rêves sont des paysages d’énergie psychologique. En tant qu’illustrations, je décris pour chaque qualité de courtes séquences de travail avec les rêves à partir de ma propre pratique, et une image schématique de comment je perçois l’interaction principale entre les systèmes du cerveau en train de rêver. Pour chacune des Qualités Essentielles des recommandations concernant le travail possible sur le rêve sont fournies. Finalement j’attire l’attention sur la ressource potentielle énorme que sont les rêves pour l’humanité dans sa totalité.Die Art und Weise, wie Psychotherapieschulen sich auf Träume beziehen, war eher von Isolationismus und gegenseitigen Konflikten geprägt als von Selbstprüfung und der darauf aufbauenden Integration der Entdeckungen und Methoden anderer Schulen. Jungs Methode stand im Gegensatz zu Freuds Psychoanalyse. Die Existenzpsychologie lehnte Freuds und Jungs Entdeckungen ab, während die kognitive Traumdeutung und die kognitive Therapie völlig andere Wege suchten. Darüber hinaus ist die wissenschaftliche und neuropsychologische Traumforschung nur unwesentlich an die psychotherapeutischen Traumtheorien gebunden. Diese Konflikte und das Fehlen einer umfassenden Traumtheorie haben es dem gegenwärtigen rationalistischen kollektiven Bewußtsein und Behandlungssystem erleichtert, das oftmals herausfordernde Wissen über uns selbst, das Träume liefern können, abzulehnen. Der Artikel beschreibt, wie zeitgenössische Theorien komplexer kybernetischer Informationsnetze einen diesen Zustand beendenden, konstruktiven Rahmen für die Aufdeckung gemeinsamer Merkmale in den oben genannten Zweigen der Traumforschung und Traumarbeit schaffen können. In diesem Rahmen werden zehn Kernqualitäten dargestellt, die sowohl vom therapeutischen Wissen als auch von der wissenschaftlichen Forschung unterstützt werden: 1) Träume befassen sich mit Angelegenheiten, die für uns wichtig sind, 2) Träume symbolisieren, 3) Träume verkörpern, 4) Träume sind Probeläufe an einem sicheren Ort, 5) Träume sind online mit unbewußter Intelligenz, 6) Träume sind Mustererkennung, 7) Träume sind Kommunikation auf hohem Niveau, 8) Träume sind verdichtete Information, 9) Träume sind Erfahrungen der Ganzheit, 10) Träume sind psychologische Energielandschaften. Als verdeutlichende Illustrationen beschreibe ich für jede Kernqualität kurze Traumsequenzen aus meiner eigenen Praxis sowie ein schematisches Bild davon, wie ich die übergeordnete Interaktion zwischen Systemen im träumenden Gehirn wahrnehme. Für jede Kernqualität werden Empfehlungen für die praktische Traumarbeit gegeben. Per dare illustrazioni educative descrivo, per ogni qualità fondamentale, brevi sequenze di sogni dalla mia pratica personale e un’immagine schematica di come percepisco l’interazione prevalente tra i sistemi nel cervello durante i sogni. Per ogni qualità fondamentale vengono fornite raccomandazioni per la pratica del lavoro sui sogni. Infine, richiamo l’attenzione sui sogni come enorme risorsa psicologica per l’umanità nel suo insieme.Отношение различных подходов в психотерапии к работе со сновидениями характеризуется изолированностью и конфликтностью, практически отсутствует самоисследование с последующей интеграцией находок и методов других школ. Научные и нейропсихологические исследования сновидений лишь незначительным образом соотносили свои результаты с психотерапевтическими теориями сновидений. В данной статье описано, как современные теории сложных кибернетических информационных сетей могут создать конструктивную рамку для неизученных общих аспектов вышеупомянутых направлений исследований сновидений и работы с ними. В качестве учебной иллюстрации для каждого ключевого качества я привожу короткий пример работы со сновидениями из моей практики, а также даю схематический образ того, как я воспринимаю пересекающееся взаимодействие между системами сновидящего мозга. El artículo describe cómo las teorías contemporáneas de redes complejas de información cibernética puedan crear un marco de referencia constructivo para descubrir rasgos comunes dentro de las líneas de investigación de los sueños mencionadas anteriormente.
