We report a detailed physical analysis on a family of isolated, antiferro-magnetically (AF) coupled, chromium(III) finite chains, of general formula (Cr(RCO(2))(2)F)(n) where the chain length n = 6 or 7. Additionally, the chains are capped with a selection of possible terminating ligands, including hfac (= l,l,l,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dionate(l-)), acac (= pentane-2,4-dionate(l-)) or (F)(3). Measurements by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), magnetometery and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy have been used to study how the electronic properties are affected by n and capping ligand type. These comparisons allowed the subtle electronic effects the choice of capping ligand makes for odd member spin 3/2 ground state and even membered spin 0 ground state chains to be investigated. For this investigation full characterisation of physical properties have been performed with spin Hamiltonian parameterisation, including the determination of Heisenberg exchange coupling constants and single ion axial and rhombic anisotropy. We reveal how the quantum spin energy levels of odd or even membered chains can be modified by the type of capping ligand terminating the chain. Choice of capping ligands enables Cr-Cr exchange coupling to be adjusted by 0, 4 or 24%, relative to Cr-Cr exchange coupling within the body of the chain, by the substitution of hfac, acac or (F)(3) capping ligands to the ends of the chain, respectively. The manipulation of quantum spin levels via ligands which play no role in super-exchange, is of general interest to the practise of spin Hamilton modelling, where such second order effects are generally not considered of relevance to magnetic properties.

Metallation of hexahydropyrimidopyrimidine (hppH) by [Fe{N(SiMe(3))(2)}(2)] (1) produces the trimetallic iron(II) amide cage complex [{(Me(3)Si)(2)NFe}(2)(hpp)(4)Fe] (2), which contains three iron(II) centers, each of which resides in a distorted tetrahedral environment. An alternative, one-pot route that avoids use of the highly air-sensitive complex 1 is described for the synthesis of the iron(II)-lithium complex [{(Me(3)Si)(2)N}(2)Fe{Li(bta)}](2) (3) (where btaH = benzotriazole), in which both iron(II) centers reside in 3-coordinated pyramidal environments. The structure of 3 is also interpreted in terms of the ring laddering principle developed for alkali metal amides. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that both compounds display very weak antiferromagnetic exchange between the iron(II) centers, and that the iron(II) centers in 2 and 3 possess large negative axial zero-field splittings.

The first examples of vinylidene complexes of the cycloheptatrienyl tungsten system [W(C=CHR)(dppe)(η-C₇H₇)](+) (dppe = Ph₂PCH₂CH₂PPh₂; R = H, 3; Ph, 4; C₆H₄-4-Me, 5) have been synthesised by reaction of [WBr(dppe)(η-C₇H₇)], 1, with terminal alkynes HC≡CR; a one-pot synthesis of 1 from [WBr(CO)₂(η-C₇H₇)] facilitates its use as a precursor. The X-ray structure of 4[PF₆] reveals that the vinylidene ligand substituents lie in the pseudo mirror plane of the W(dppe)(η-C₇H₇) auxiliary (vertical orientation) with the phenyl group located syn to the cycloheptatrienyl ring. Variable temperature ¹H NMR investigations on [W(C=CH₂)(dppe)(η-C₇H₇)][PF₆], 3, estimate the energy barrier to rotation about the W=C(α) bond as 62.5 ± 2 kJ mol⁻¹; approximately 10 kJ mol⁻¹ greater than for the molybdenum analogue. Deprotonation of 4 and 5 with KOBu(t) yields the alkynyls [W(C≡CR)(dppe)(η-C₇H₇)] (R = Ph, 6; C₆H₄-4-Me, 7) which undergo a reversible one-electron oxidation at a glassy carbon electrode in CH₂Cl₂ with E(½) values approximately 0.12 V negative of Mo analogues. The 17-electron radicals [6](+) and [7](+) have been investigated by spectroelectrochemical IR, UV-visible and EPR methods. The electronic structures of representative vinylidene (3) and alkynyl (6) complexes have been investigated at the B3LYP/Def2-SVP level. In both cases, electronic structure is characterised by a frontier orbital with significant metal d(z²)character and this dominates the structural and spectroscopic properties of the system.

The paramagnetic aryl-alkynyl complexes [Mo(C≡CAr)(dppe)(η-C(7)H(7))](+) (dppe = Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2); Ar = C(6)H(5), [1](+); C(6)D(5), [2](+); C(6)H(4)-4-F, [3](+); C(6)H(4)-4-Me, [5](+)) and [Mo(C≡CBu(t))(dppe)(η-C(7)H(7))](+) [4](+), have been investigated in a combined EPR and ENDOR study. Direct experimental evidence for the delocalisation of unpaired spin density over the framework of an aryl-alkynyl ligand has been obtained. The X-band solution EPR spectrum of the 4-fluoro derivative, [3](+), exhibits resolved hyperfine coupling to the remote para position of the aryl group [a(iso)((19)F) = 4.5 MHz, (1.6 G)] in addition to couplings attributable to (95/97)Mo, (31)P and (1)H of the C(7)H(7) ring. A full analysis of the (1)H ENDOR spectra is restricted by the low g anisotropy of the system which prevents the use of orientation selection. However, inter-comparison of the (1)H cw-ENDOR frozen solution spectra of [1](+), [2](+), [4](+) and [5](+), combined with spectral simulation informed by calculated values derived from DFT investigations, has facilitated estimation of the experimental a(iso)((1)H) hyperfine couplings of [1](+) including the ortho, ±3.7 MHz (±1.3 G) and para, ±3.9 MHz (±1.4 G) positions of the C(6)H(5) substituent of the aryl-alkynyl ligand.

The reaction between Ph(3)PO dissolved in acetone and "PuO(2)Cl(2)" in dilute HCl resulted in the formation of [PuO(2)Cl(2)(Ph(3)PO)(2)]. Crystallographic characterization of the acetone solvate revealed the expected axial trans plutonyl dioxo, with trans Cl and Ph(3)PO in the equatorial plane. Spectroscopic analyses ((31)P NMR, (1)H NMR, and vis/nIR) indicate the presence of both cis and trans isomers in solution, with the trans isomer being more stable. Confirmation of the higher stability of the trans versus cis isomers for [AnO(2)Cl(2)(Ph(3)PO)(2)] (An = U and Pu) was obtained through quantum chemical computational analysis, which also reveals the Pu-O(TPPO) bond to be more ionic than the U-O(TPPO) bond. Slight variation in reaction conditions led to the crystallization of two further minor products, [PuO(2)(Ph(3)PO)(4)][ClO(4)](2) and cis-[PuCl(2)(Ph(3)PO)(4)], the latter complex revealing the potential for reduction to Pu(IV). In addition, the reaction of Ph(3)PNH with [PuO(2)Cl(2)(thf)(2)](2) in anhydrous conditions gave evidence for the formation of both cis- and trans-[PuO(2)Cl(2)(Ph(3)PNH)(2)] in solution (by (31)P NMR). However, the major reaction pathway involved protonation of the ligand with the crystallographic characterization of [Ph(3)PNH(2)](2)[PuO(2)Cl(4)]. We believe that HCl/SiMe(3)Cl carried through from the small scale preparation of [PuO(2)Cl(2)(thf)(2)](2) was the source of both protons and chlorides. The fact that this chemistry was significantly different from previous uranium studies, where cis-/trans-[UO(2)Cl(2)L(2)] (L = Ph(3)PO or Ph(3)PNH) were the only products observed, provides further evidence of the unique challenges and opportunities associated with the chemistry of plutonium.

{Np(VI)O2Cl2}{Np(V)O2Cl(thf)3}2 is the first studied example of a polymetallic transuranic complex displaying both slow relaxation of the magnetization and effective superexchange interactions between 5f centers. The coupling constant for Np(V)-Np(VI) pairs is 10.8 K, more than 1 order of magnitude larger than the common values found for rare-earth ions in similar environments. The dynamic magnetic behavior displays slow relaxation of magnetization of molecular origin with an energy barrier of 140 K, which is nearly twice the size of the highest barrier found in polymetallic clusters of the d block. Our observations also suggest that future actinide-based molecular magnets will have very different behavior to lanthanide-based clusters.

Organometallic single-molecule magnet: Studies of two dimeric organometallic dysprosium compounds reveal one to be the first organometallic single-molecule magnet (see picture). A comparison of the magnetic properties and electronic structures of the two compounds shows that Dy⋅⋅⋅Dy interactions have a profound influence on the dynamic magnetic behaviour, while having little effect on the static magnetic measurements., (Copyright © 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The unprecedented spectroscopic and structural characterisation of a series of 17-electron, monometallic diynyl radicals, [Mo(C[triple bond]C-C[triple bond]CR)L(2)(eta-C(7)H(7))]*(+) (L(2) = bipy, R = SiMe(3); L(2) = dppe, R = SiMe(3) or H), are reported; the (L(2) = dppe, R = SiMe(3)) derivative is reactive to chain-centred C(beta)-C(beta') dimerisation.

Copper bis(4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazonato) acenaphthenequinone (1) and copper bis(4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazonato) acenaphthenequinone (2) are synthesized and characterized in solution, in the solid state, and radiolabeled. Serum-protein binding radioassays show good stability in solution and about 25 % binding to protein over 1 h, which is comparable with the hypoxia selective tracer [(64)Cu(ATSM)]. Cyclic voltammetry shows fast and reversible reduction at redox potentials similar to the values known for hypoxia-selective copper compounds. However, despite this, complex 1 does not show any hypoxic-selective uptake in HeLa cells over 1-h standard assays. Possible reasons for this are studied by using the intrinsic fluorescence of the Cu(II) complexes to determine the cellular distributions and uptake mechanism by confocal microscopy. The complexes are found to bind to the external cell membrane and disperse evenly in the cytoplasm only after a very slow cell internalization (>1 h). No significant changes in distribution are observed by fluorescence imaging under hypoxic conditions. The rate of localization in the cytoplasm contrasts with their Zn(II) analogues, which are known to have fast cell uptake (up to 20 min) and a clear localization in lysosomes and mitochondria. The cytotoxicity mechanism of 1 over 24 h against a number of adherent cell lines is seen to be by membrane disruption and is of a comparable magnitude to that of [Cu(ATSM)], as demonstrated by methyl tetrazolium (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays.

The synthesis and structural characterization of three heterometallic rings templated about imidazolium cations is reported. The compounds are [2,4-DiMe-ImidH][Cr(7)Ni(II)F(8)(O(2)CtBu)(16)] 1 (2,4-DiMe-ImidH=the cation of 2,4-dimethylimidazole), [ImidH](2)[Cr(6)Ni(II) (2)F(8)(O(2)CCtBu)(16)] 2 (ImidH=the cation of imidazole), and [1-Bz-ImidH](2) [Cr(7)Ni(II) (2)F(9)(O(2)CtBu)(18)] 3 (1-Bz-ImidH=the cation of 1-benzylimidazole). The structures show the formation of octagonal arrays of metals for 1 and 2 and a nonagon of metal centers for 3. In all cases the edges of the polygon are bridged by a single fluoride and two pivalate ligands, and the position of the divalent metal centers cannot be distinguished by X-ray diffraction. Magnetic studies combined with EPR spectroscopy allow the characterization of the magnetic states of the compounds. In each case the exchange is antiferromagnetic with a magnetic exchange parameter J approximately -5.8 cm(-1), and it is not possible to differentiate the exchange between two Cr(III) centers (J(CrCr)) from the exchange between a Cr(III) and a Ni(II) center (J(CrNi)). For 2 there is evidence for the presence of at least two, possibly four, linkage isomers of the heterometallic ring, caused by the presence of two divalent metal centers in the ring. The EPR spectroscopy of 3 suggests an S=1/2 ground state of the ring and that it is likely that only one linkage isomer is present.

We report the structural, spectroscopic and preliminary magnetic characterisation of a tri-metallic plutonyl(VI) polyoxometalate complex, K(11)[K(3)(PuO(2))(3)(GeW(9)O(34))(2)] x 12 H(2)O.

For heparan sulfate (HS) to bind and regulate the activity of proteins, the polysaccharide must present an appropriate sequence and adopt a suitable conformation. The conformations of heparin derivatives, as models of HS, are altered via a change in the associated cations, and this can drastically modify their FGF signaling activities. Here, we report that changing the cations associated with an N-acetyl-enriched heparin polysaccharide, from sodium to copper(II), converted it from supporting signaling through the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGF-1-FGFR1c) tyrosine kinase signaling system to being inhibitory in a cell-based BaF3 assay. Nuclear magnetic resonance and synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD) spectroscopy demonstrated that the polysaccharide conformation differed in the presence of sodium or copper(II) cations. Electron paramagnetic resonance confirmed the environment of the copper(II) ion on the N-acetyl-enriched polysaccharide was distinct from that previously observed with intact heparin, which supported signaling. Secondary structures in solution complexes of polysaccharides with FGF-1 (which either supported signaling through FGFR1c or were inhibitory) were determined by SRCD. This allowed direct comparison of the two FGF-1-polysaccharide complexes in solution, containing identical molecular components and differing only in their cation content. Subtle structural differences were revealed, including a reduction in the level of disordered structure in the inhibitory complex.

The synthesis of [Np(VI)O(2)Cl(2)(thf)](n) offers the potential for more detailed exploration of neptunyl(vi) chemistry, while the synthesis of the mixed valence cluster complex [{Np(VI)O(2)Cl(2)}{Np(V)O(2)Cl(thf)(3)}(2)] allows molecular neptunyl(v) 'cation-cation' interactions to be probed.

Spinning wheels: The presented highly resolved multifrequency continuous wave EPR spectra (e.g., see figure) of the heterooctametalic "wheels" Cr(7)M provide rare examples of high nuclearity polymetallic systems where detailed information on the spin-Hamiltonian parameters of the ground and excited spin states is observed.We present highly resolved multifrequency (X-, K-, Q- and W-band) continous wave EPR spectra of the heterooctametalic "wheels", [(CH(3))(2)NH(2)][Cr(III) (7)M(II)F(8)((CH(3))(3)CCOO)(16)], hereafter Cr(7)M, where M=Cd, Zn, Mn, and Ni. These experimental spectra provide rare examples of high nuclearity polymetallic systems where detailed information on the spin-Hamiltonian parameters of the ground and excited spin states is observed. We interpret the EPR spectra by use of restricted size effective subspaces obtained by the rigorous solution of spin-Hamiltonians of dimension up to 10(5) by use of the Davidson algorithm. We show that transferability of spin-Hamiltonian parameters across complexes of the Cr(7)M family is possible and that the spin-Hamiltonian parameters of Cr(7)M do not have sharply defined values, but are rather distributed around a mean value.

We report the synthesis, spectroscopic and structural characterization, and computational analysis of a series of phosphomolybdate complexes with tetravalent metal cations. The reaction between Ce (IV) and Th (IV) with phosphomolybdate at the optimum pH for the stabilization of the lacunary heteropolyoxometalate anion, [PMo 11O 39] (7-), results in the formation of compounds containing the anions [Ce(PMo 11O 39) 2] (10-) and [Th(PMo 11O 39) 2] (10-), respectively. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was performed on salts of both species, Cs 10[Ce(PMo 11O 39) 2].20H 2O and (NH 4) 10[Th(PMo 11O 39) 2].22H 2O. In both anionic complexes the f-block metal cation is coordinated to the four unsaturated terminal lacunary site oxygens of each [PMo 11O 39] (7-) anion, yielding 8 coordinate sandwich complexes, analogous to previously prepared related complexes. Spectroscopic characterization points to the stability of these complexes in solution over a reasonably wide pH range. Density functional analysis suggests that the Ce-O bond strength in [Ce(PMo 11O 39) 2] (10-) is greater than the Th-O bond strength in [Th(PMo 11O 39) 2] (10-), with the dominant bonding interaction being ionic in both cases. In contrast, under similar reaction conditions, the dominant solid state Zr (IV) and Hf (IV) complexes formed contain the anions [Zr(PMo 12O 40)(PMo 11O 39)] (6-) and [Hf(PMo 12O 40)(PMo 11O 39)] (6-), respectively. In these complexes the central Group 4 d-block metal cations are coordinated to the four unsaturated terminal lacunary site oxygens of the [PMo 11O 39] (7-) ligand and to four bridging oxygens of a plenary Keggin anion, [PMo 12O 40] (3-). In addition, (NH 4) 5{Hf[PMo 12O 40][(NH 4)PMo 11O 39]}.23.5H 2O can be crystallized as a minor product. The structure of the anion, {Hf[PMo 12O 40][(NH 4)PMo 11O 39]} (5-), reveals coordination of the central Hf (IV) cation via four bridging oxygens on both the coordinated [PMo 11O 39] (7-) and [PMo 12O 40] (3-) anions. Unusually, the highly charged lacunary site remains uncoordinated to the Hf metal center but instead interacts with an ammonium cation. (31)P NMR indicates that complexation of the Keggin anion, [PMo 12O 40] (3-), to Hf (IV) and Zr (IV) will stabilize the Keggin anion to a much higher pH than usually observed.

The synthesis and magnetic properties of enneametallic and octametallic Fe(III) cage complexes from tetraazamacrocycle ligands (1,7-H2DO2A) and (H3DO3A) respectively, are reported.

Detailed chemical, spectroelectrochemical and computational studies have been used to investigate the mechanism of hypoxia selectivity of a range of copper radiopharmaceuticals. A revised mechanism involving a delicate balance between cellular uptake, intracellular reduction, reoxidation, protonation and ligand dissociation is proposed. This mechanism accounts for observed differences in the reported cellular uptake and washout of related copper bis(thiosemicarbazonato) complexes. Three copper and zinc complexes have been characterised by X-ray crystallography and the redox chemistry of a series of copper complexes has been investigated by using electronic absorption and EPR spectroelectrochemistry. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have also been used to probe the electronic structures of intermediate species and assign the electronic absorption spectra. DFT calculations also show that one-electron oxidation is ligand-based, leading to the formation of cationic triplet species. In the absence of protons, metal-centred one-electron reduction gives the reduced anionic copper(I) species, [CuIATSM](-), and for the first time it is shown that molecular oxygen can reoxidise this anion to give the neutral, lipophilic parent complexes, which can wash out of cells. The electrochemistry is pH dependent and in the presence of stronger acids both chemical and electrochemical reduction leads to quantitative and rapid dissociation of copper(I) ions from the mono- or diprotonated complexes, [CuIATSMH] and [Cu(I)ATSMH2]+. In addition, a range of protonated intermediate species have been identified at lower acid concentrations. The one-electron reduction potential, rate of reoxidation of the copper(I) anionic species and ease of protonation are dependent on the structure of the ligand, which also governs their observed behaviour in vivo.

Syntheses, structural and magnetic and EPR data are reported for two octametallic V(III) clusters with anisotropic S = 4 ground states arising from strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions.

We report the synthesis, by solvothermal methods, of the tetradecametallic cluster complexes [M14(L)6O6(OMe)18Cl6] (M=FeIII, CrIII) and [V14(L)6O6(OMe)18Cl6-xOx] (L=anion of 1,2,3-triazole or derivative). Crystal structure data are reported for the {M14} complexes [Fe14(C2H2N3)6O6(OMe)18Cl6], [Cr14(bta)6O6(OMe)18Cl6] (btaH=benzotriazole), [V14O6(Me2bta)6(OMe)18Cl6-xOx] [Me2btaH=5,6-Me2-benzotriazole; eight metal sites are VIII, the remainder are disordered between {VIII-Cl}2+ and {VIV=O}2+] and for the distorted [FeIII14O9(OH)(OMe)8(bta)7(MeOH)5(H2O)Cl8] structure that results from non-solvothermal synthetic methods, highlighting the importance of temperature regime in cluster synthesis. Background: Relationships between income inequality and various health indicators have been the subject of much study and some controversy. We investigated associations between child mortality and income inequality amongst the wealthier OECD countries as well as changes in their relative child mortality rankings over time., Methods: Data were drawn from the 2003-2006 'State of the World's Children' reports published by UNICEF; Gini coefficients on income inequality were also used. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to investigate associations. Longitudinal child mortality data was used to compare rankings., Results: We discovered very strong associations between child mortality and income inequality. In contrast to earlier results, these associations persist when the USA is excluded from the analysis. The countries with the worst child mortality figures were previously singled out in a 1993 UNICEF study on child neglect in rich nations. We also report their worsening child mortality rankings, since 1960, relative to the other OECD countries., Conclusions: The results strengthen the existing evidence linking child mortality with income inequality in wealthy nations, and add to the evidence that sociopolitical factors are important in this regard.

The reaction between [UO2(ReO4)2.H(2)O] and two equivalents of either tri-n-butyl phosphine oxide (TBPO) or tri-iso-butyl phosphate (TiBP) results in the formation of [UO2(mu2-ReO4)(ReO4)(TBPO)2]2 (1) and [UO2(mu2-ReO4)(ReO4)(TiBP)2]2 (2) respectively. Both complexes crystallise as two structurally similar centrosymmetric dimers, the cores containing two uranyl moieties linked by bridging perrhenates. Two P=O donor ligands and one monodenatate perrhenate complete the pentagonal bipyramidal coordination sphere at each metal centre. Both complexes have also been characterised in the solid state by vibrational and absorption spectroscopy. Solution spectroscopic characterisation indicates that both perrhenate and phosphine oxide (1) or phosphate (2) remain coordinated, although it is not possible to state conclusively that the dimeric species remain intact. A low resolution structural study of a minor product from the reaction that yielded revealed a monomeric complex with only monodentate perrhenate coordination, [UO2(ReO4)2(H2O)(TiBP)2] (2'). These results represent the first structural evidence for the bridging coordination mode of perrhenate on coordination to an actinide and yields further insight into the possible solvent phase pertechnetate complexes that may exist in PUREX process phosphate rich solvent.

The synthesis, structure, magnetic and electronic properties of soluble transition metal phosphonate cages utilizing tritylphosphonic acid (TPA) as ligand are reported.

The mononuclear +2 oxidation state metal complexes [Au([9]aneS(3))(2)](2+) and [Ag([18]aneS(6))](2+) have been synthesized and characterized crystallographically. The crystal structure of the Au(II) species [Au([9]aneS(3))(2)](BF(4))(2) shows a Jahn-Teller tetragonally distorted geometry with Au-S(1) = 2.839(5), Au-S(2) = 2.462(5), and Au-S(3) = 2.452(5) A. The related Ag(II) complex [Ag([18]aneS(6))](ClO(4))(2) has been structurally characterized at both 150 and 30 K and is the first structurally characterized complex of Ag(II) with homoleptic thioether S-coordination. The single-crystal X-ray structure of [Ag([18]aneS(6))](ClO(4))(2) confirms octahedral homoleptic S(6)-thioether coordination. At 150 K, the structure contains two independent Ag(II)-S distances of 2.569(7) and 2.720(6) A. At 30 K, the structure retains two independent Ag(II)-S distances of 2.615(6) and 2.620(6) A, with the complex cation retaining 3-fold symmetry. The electronic structures of [Au([9]aneS(3))(2)](2+) and [Ag([18]aneS(6))](2+) have been probed in depth using multifrequency EPR spectroscopy coupled with DFT calculations. For [Au([9]aneS(3))(2)](2+), the spectra are complex due to large quadrupole coupling to (197)Au. Simulation of the multifrequency spectra gives the principal g values, hyperfine (A) and quadrupole (P) couplings, and furthermore reveals non-co-incidence of the principal axes of the P tensor with respect to the A and g matrices. These results are rationalized in terms of the electronic and geometric structure and reveal that the SOMO has ca. 30% Au 5d(xy)() character, consistent with DFT calculations (27% Au character). For [Ag([18]aneS(6))](2+), detailed EPR spectroscopic analysis confirms that the SOMO has ca. 26% Ag 4d(xy)() character and DFT calculations are consistent with this result (22% Ag character).

We report on the Fe17 high-spin molecular cluster and show that this system is an exemplification of nanostructured dipolar magnetism. Each Fe17 molecule, with spin S=35/2 and axial anisotropy as small as D approximately -0.02 K, is the magnetic unit that can be chemically arranged in different packing crystals while preserving both the spin ground state and anisotropy. For every configuration, molecular spins are correlated only by dipolar interactions. The ensuing interplay between dipolar energy and anisotropy gives rise to macroscopic behaviors ranging from superparamagnetism to long-range magnetic order at temperatures below 1 K.

(NH4)14Na4[(Np3W4O15)(H2O)3(BiW9O33)3].62H2O (1) and (NH4)14.5Na3.5[(Np3W4O15)(H2O)3(SbW9O33)3].40.5H2O (2) each contain three neptunyl(v) moieties encapsulated within heteropolyoxotungstate frameworks in which axial {NpO2}+ oxygens form one face of a WO6 octahedron.

The synthesis, crystal structure and preliminary magnetic studies are reported for a very highly reduced, VIV8VIII2, polyoxo(alkoxo)vanadate with a unique square prismatic topology.

A Th(IV) compound, [Th(TFSI)4(HTFSI)].2H2O [where TFSI = N(SO2CF3)2], has been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and vibrational spectroscopy. The analysis suggests that the TFSI anion coordinates to the metal center via the sulfonyl oxygens as well as provides evidence for the coordination of HTFSI. The voltammetric behavior of this compound has been studied in the room-temperature ionic liquid [Me3NnBu][TFSI], and results show that Th(IV) is reduced to Th(0) in this ionic liquid in a single reduction step. Analysis of cyclic voltammograms shows that an insoluble product is being formed at the electrode surface, which is attributed to the formation of ThO2 by reaction with water. The E0 value for the reduction of Th(IV) to Th(0) has been determined to be -2.20 V (vs Fc+/Fc; -1.80 V vs SHE). A comparison of this E0 value with those obtained for Th(IV) reduction in a LiCl-KCl eutectic (400 degrees C), water, and nonaqueous solvents shows that the reduction in [Me3NnBu][TFSI] is easier to accomplish than that in these other solvents.

The crystal structures of the title complexes were measured at several temperatures between room temperature and 100 K. Each sample shows reversible crystal-to-crystal phase transitions as the temperature is varied. The behaviour of [U(ReO4)4(TBPO)4] (I) and [Th(ReO4)4(TBPO)4] (II) (TBPO = tri-n-butylphosphine oxide) is very similar; at room temperature, crystals of (I) and (II) are isostructural, with space group I42m, and reducing the temperature to 100 K causes a lowering of the space-group symmetry to C-centred cells, space groups Cc for (I) and Cmc2(1) for (II). The variation of lattice symmetry of [Th(TcO4)4(TBPO)4] (III) was found to be somewhat different, with the body-centred cubic space group, I43m, occurring at 293 K, a reduction of symmetry at 230 K to the C-centred orthorhombic space group, Cmc2(1), and a further transition to the primitive orthorhombic space group, Pbc2(1), below 215 K. Elucidation of the correct space-group symmetry and the subsequent refinement was complicated in some cases by the twinning by pseudo-merohedry that arises from the lowering of the space-group symmetry, occurring as the temperature is reduced. All three of the crystal structures determined at room temperature have high atomic displacement parameters, particularly of the (n)Bu groups, and (III) shows disorder of some of the O atoms. The structures in the space group Cmc2(1), show some disorder of nBu groups, but are otherwise reasonably well ordered; the structures of (I) in Cc and (III) in Pbc2(1) are ordered, even to the ends of the alkyl chains. Inter-comparison of the structures measured below 293 K, using the program OFIT from the SHELXTL package, showed that generally, they are remarkably alike, with weighted r.m.s. deviations of the M, M' and P atoms of less than 0.1 A, as are the 293 K structures of (I) and (II) with their low-temperature counterparts. However, the structure of (III) measured in the space group Cmc2(1) is significantly different from both the structure of (III) at 293 K and that found below 215 K, with weighted r.m.s. deviations of the Th, Tc and P atoms of 0.40 and 0.37 A, respectively. An extensive network of weak intra- and intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds found between the atoms of the nBu and [M'O4] groups probably influences the packing and the overall geometry of the molecules.

Two pro-ligands ((R)LH) comprised of an o,p-di-tert-butyl-substituted phenol covalently bonded to a benzimidazole ((Bz)LH) or a 4,5-di-p-methoxyphenyl substituted imidazole ((PhOMe)LH), have been structurally characterised. Each possesses an intramolecular O-H[dot dot dot]N hydrogen bond between the phenolic O-H group and an imidazole nitrogen atom and (1)H NMR studies show that this bond is retained in solution. Each (R)LH undergoes an electrochemically reversible, one-electron, oxidation to form the [(R)LH] (+) radical cation that is considered to be stabilised by an intramolecular O...H-N hydrogen bond. The (R)LH pro-ligands react with M(BF(4))(2).H(2)O (M = Cu or Zn) in the presence of Et(3)N to form the corresponding [M((R)L)(2)] compound. [Cu((Bz)L)(2)] (), [Cu((PhOMe)L)(2)] (), [Zn((Bz)L)(2)] and [Zn((PhOMe)L)(2)] have been isolated and the structures of .4MeCN, .2MeOH, .2MeCN and .2MeCN determined by X-ray crystallography. In each compound the metal possesses an N(2)O(2)-coordination sphere: in .4MeCN and .2MeOH the {CuN(2)O(2)} centre has a distorted square planar geometry; in .2MeCN and .2MeCN the {ZnN(2)O(2)} centre has a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The X-band EPR spectra of both and , in CH(2)Cl(2)-DMF (9 : 1) solution at 77 K, are consistent with the presence of a Cu(ii) complex having the structure identified by X-ray crystallography. Electrochemical studies have shown that each undergo two, one-electron, oxidations; the potentials of these processes and the UV/vis and EPR properties of the products indicate that each oxidation is ligand-based. The first oxidation produces [M(II)((R)L)((R)L )](+), comprising a M(ii) centre bound to a phenoxide ((R)L) and a phenoxyl radical ((R)L ) ligand; these cations have been generated electrochemically and, for R = PhOMe, chemically by oxidation with Ag[BF(4)]. The second oxidation produces [M(II)((R)L )(2)](2+). The information obtained from these investigations shows that a suitable pro-ligand design allows a relatively inert phenoxyl radical to be generated, stabilised by either a hydrogen bond, as in [(R)LH] (+) (R = Bz or PhOMe), or by coordination to a metal, as in [M(II)((R)L)((R)L )](+) (M = Cu or Zn; R = Bz or PhOMe). Coordination to a metal is more effective than hydrogen bonding in stabilising a phenoxyl radical and Cu(ii) is slightly more effective than Zn(II) in this respect.

We report the synthesis, structural, and spectroscopic characterization of a series of uranium(IV)-perrhenato complexes. Three isostructural complexes with general formula [U(ReO4)4(L)4] (where L = tri-n-butylphosphine oxide/TBPO (2), triethyl phosphate/TEP (3), or tri-iso-butyl phosphate/TiBP (4)), have been synthesized, both through the photoreduction of ethanolic {UO2}2+ solutions and also via a novel U(IV) starting material, U(ReO4)4.5H2O (1). Compound 1 has also been used in the preparation of [U(ReO4)4(TPPO)3(CH3CN)].2CH3CN (5) and [U(ReO4)(DPPMO2)3(OH)][ReO4]2.2CH3CN (6), where TPPO represents triphenylphosphine oxide and DPPMO2 represents bis(diphenylphosphino)methane dioxide. All six complexes have been spectroscopically characterized using NMR, UV-vis-NIR, and IR techniques, with 2, 3, 5, and 6 also fully structurally characterized. The U atoms in compounds 2-6 all exhibit eight-coordinate geometry with up to four perrhenate groups in addition to three (DPPMO2 and TPPO) or four (TEP, TiBP, TBPO) coordinated organic ligands. In the case of compounds 5 and 6, the coordination of eight ligands to the U(IV) center is completed by the binding of a solvent molecule (CH3CN) and OH-, respectively. Solid-state physical analysis (elemental and thermogravimetric) and infrared spectroscopy are in agreement with the structural studies. The crystallographic data suggest that the strength of the U(IV)-O-donor ligand bonds decreases across the series R3PO > [ReO4]- > (RO)3PO. Solution-state IR and 31P NMR spectroscopy appear to be in agreement with these solid-state results.

The reduction of selected lanthanide cations to the zerovalent state in the room-temperature ionic liquid [Me3N(n)Bu][TFSI] is reported (where TFSI = bistriflimide, [N(SO2CF3)2]-). The lanthanide cations were introduced to the melt as the TFSI hydrate complexes [Ln(TFSI)3(H2O)3] (where Ln = La(III), Sm(III) or Eu(III)). The lanthanum compound [La(TFSI)3(H2O)3] has been crystallographically characterized, revealing the first structurally characterized f-element TFSI complex. The lanthanide in all three complexes was shown to be reducible to the metallic state in [Me3N(n)Bu][TFSI]. For both the Eu and Sm complexes, reduction to the metallic state was achieved via divalent species, and there was an additional observation of the electrodeposition of Eu metal.

We report the syntheses and crystal structures of (NH4)11[Ln(III)(PMo11O39)2.xH2O (where Ln = every trivalent lanthanide cation except promethium) in which two lacunary [PMo11O39]7- anions sandwich an 8-coordinate Ln(III) cation to yield the complex anion, [LnIII(PMo11O39)2]11-. The 14 salts crystallise in two different space groups, C2/c or P1, but the LnIII containing anions are isostructural across the whole series, a very rare example of such a complete study. Solid state and solution 31P NMR, Raman and IR spectroscopies have been used to prove the stability of [Ln(PMo11O39)2]11- in aqueous solution. As expected, the LnIII cation contracts across the series and the Ln-O bond distances decrease uniformly. Interestingly, the splitting in the nu(P-O) mode within the [PMo11O39]7- unit increases uniformly across the series, which we attribute to the stronger interaction with the smaller, higher charge density LnIII cation as the series is traversed. For the 31P NMR measurements a direct comparison of Lanthanide Induced (paramagnetic) Shift could be made with the analogous [P(W11O39)2]11- complexes.

The new phenol-imidazole pro-ligands (R)LH react with Co(BF(4))(2).6H(2)O in the presence of Et(3)N to form the corresponding [Co(II)((R)L)(2)] compound (R = Ph (1), PhOMe (2), or Bz (3)). Also, (Bz)LH, reacts with Co(ii) in the presence of Et(3)N and H(2)O(2) to form [Co(III)((Bz)L)(3)](4). The structures of 1.2.5MeCN, 2.2DMF, 3.4MeOH, and 4.4DMF have been determined by X-ray crystallography. 1, 2, and 3 each involve Co(II) bound to two N,O-bidentate ligands with a distorted tetrahedral coordination sphere; 4 involves Co(III) bound to three N,O-bidentate ligands in a mer-N(3)O(3) distorted octahedral geometry. [Co(II)((R)L)(2)](R = Ph or PhOMe) undergo two, one-electron, oxidations. The products of the first oxidation, [1](+) and [2](+), have been synthesised by the chemical oxidation of 1 and 2, respectively; these cations, formulated as [Co(II)((R)L*)((R)L)(2)](+), comprise one phenoxyl radical and one phenolate ligand bound to Co(II) and are the first phenoxyl radical ligand complexes of tetra-coordinated Co(II). 4 undergoes two, one-electron, ligand-based oxidations, the first of which produces [4](+), [Co(III)((Bz)L*)((Bz)L)(2)](+). Unlike [1](+) and [2](+), product of the one-electron oxidation of [Co(II)((Bz)L)(2)], [3](+), is unstable and decomposes to produce [4](+). These studies have demonstrated that the chemical properties of [M(II)((R)L*)((R)L)(2)](+)(M = Co, Cu, Zn) are highly dependent on the nature of both the ligand and the metal centre.

The syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of three new MnIII clusters, [Mn26O17(OH)8(OMe)4F10(bta)22(MeOH)14(H2O)2] (1), [Mn(0O6(OH)2(bta)8(py)8F8] (2) and [NHEt3]2[Mn3O(bta)6F3] (3), are reported (bta=anion of benzotriazole), thereby demonstrating the utility of MnF3 as a new synthon in Mn cluster chemistry. The "melt" reaction (100 degrees C) between MnF(3) and benzotriazole (btaH, C6H5N3) under an inert atmosphere, followed by dissolution in MeOH produces the cluster [Mn26O17(OH)8(OMe)4F10(bta)22(MeOH)14(H2O)2] (1) after two weeks. Complex 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1, and consists of a complicated array of metal tetrahedra linked by mu3-O2- ions, mu3- and mu2-OH- ions, mu2-MeO- ions and mu2-bta- ligands. The "simpler" reaction between MnF3 and btaH in boiling MeOH (50 degrees C) also produces complex 1. If this reaction is repeated in the presence of pyridine, the decametallic complex [Mn10O6(OH)2(bta)8(py)8F8] (2) is produced. Complex 2 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 and consists of a "supertetrahedral" [Mn(III)10] core bridged by six mu3-O2- ions, two mu3-OH- ions, four mu2-F- ions and eight mu2-bta- ions. The replacement of pyridine by triethylamine in the same reaction scheme produces the trimetallic species [NHEt3]2[Mn3O(bta)6F3] (3). Complex 3 crystallises in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c and has a structure analogous to that of the basic metal carboxylates of general formula [M3O(RCO2)6L3]0/+, which consists of an oxo-centred metal triangle with mu2-bta- ligands bridging each edge of the triangle and the fluoride ions acting as the terminal ligands. DC magnetic susceptibility measurements in the 300-1.8 K and 0.1-7 T ranges were investigated for all three complexes. For each, the value of chi(M)T decreases with decreasing temperatures; this indicates the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in 1-3. For complex 1, the low-temperature value of chi(M)T is 10 cm(3) K mol(-1) and fitting of the magnetisation data gives S=4, g=2.0 and D=-0.90 cm(-1). For complex 2, the value of chi(M)T falls to a value of approximately 5.0 cm(3) K mol(-1) at 1.8 K, which is consistent with a small spin ground state. For the triangular complex 3, the best fit to the experimental chi(M)T versus T data was obtained for the following parameters: Ja = -5.01 cm(-1), Jb = +9.16 cm(-1) and g=2.00, resulting in an S=2 spin ground state. DFT calculations on 3, however, suggest an S=1 or S=0 ground state with J(a)=-2.95 cm(-1) and J(b)=-2.12 cm(-1). AC susceptibility measurements performed on 1 in the 1.8-4.00 K range show the presence of out-of-phase AC susceptibility signals, but no peaks. Low-temperature single-crystal studies performed on 1 on an array of micro-SQUIDS show the time- and temperature-dependent hysteresis loops indicative of single-molecule magnetism behaviour.

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of [UO(2)(ReO(4))(DPPMO(2))(2)][ReO(4)] and [UO(2)(Cl)(DPPMO(2))(2)][Cl] (where DPPMO(2) = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane dioxide). In both complexes, the linear uranyl dication is coordinated to two bidentate DPPMO(2) ligands in the equatorial plane with one coordinated and one non-coordinated anion (either perrhenate or chloride). We have also prepared the pertechnetate analogue, and, through (31)P and (99)Tc NMR, we have shown that the cation, [UO(2)(TcO(4))(DPPMO(2))(2)](+), is stable in solution.

The reaction of the trimetallic species [Fe(3)O(PhCOO)(6)(H(2)O)(3)]NO(3) with 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)ethane (H(3)thme) affords either the octametallic species [Fe(8)(PhCOO)(12)(thme)(4)] 1 or the hexadecametallic species [Fe(16)(EtO)(4)(PhCOO)(16)(Hthme)(12)](NO(3))(4) 2, depending on the nature of the solvent used for crystallization. The structure of 1 can be described as a nonplanar wheel of eight Fe(III) ions bridged by a combination of PhCOO(-) and thme(3)(-) ligands, and 2 as a nonplanar wheel of sixteen Fe(III) ions bridged by PhCOO(-), Hthme(2)(-), and EtO(-) ligands. Both compounds can be broken down into simple units of two metal ions and the bridging ligands that connect them. The best fits of the chi vs T curves in the 300-10 K temperature range were obtained with the parameters g = 2.0, J(1) = -24.0 cm(-1), and J(2) = -8.59 cm(-1) for [Fe(8)] and g = 2.0, J(1) = -25.0 cm(-1), J(2) = -11.73 cm(-1), and J(3) = -69.3 cm(-1) for [Fe(16)]. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the antiferromagnetic interactions between the metals in the dinuclear units decrease when two types of bridging ligands are present, as expected for an orbital counter-complementarity effect.

The reaction of anhydrous FeCl(3) with 1H-benzotriazole-1-methanol (Bta-CH(2)OH) in MeOH produces the pentanuclear complex [Fe(5)O(2)(OMe)(2)(Bta)(4)(BtaH)(MeOH)(5)Cl(5)], containing a distorted tetrahedron of four Fe ions centred on a fifth. The central Fe is antiferromagnetically coupled to the peripheral Fe ions resulting in an S= 15/2 spin ground state.

The first structural characterization of an actinide complex with coordinated perrhenate is reported, [UO2(ReO4)2(TPPO)3] (1). In this [UO2]2+ complex two [ReO4]- anions and three TPPO (triphenylphosphine oxide) P=O donor ligands are coordinated in the equatorial plane in a cisoid arrangement. This bonding arrangement, and apparent strain observed in the equatorially bonded ligands, is attributed to the solid state packing in adjacent molecules in which hydrophobic TPPO ligands form an effective "shell" around a hydrophilic core of two UO2(ReO4)2 moieties. Solid state vibrational spectroscopy (infrared and Raman), 31P CP MAS NMR and elemental analysis are also consistent with the formula of 1. Solution state vibrational spectroscopy and 31P NMR measurements in EtOH indicate the lability of the TPPO and [ReO4]- groups. The photolytic generation of peroxide in EtOH solutions of 1 leads to the formation of trace quantities of [[(UO2)(TPPO)3]2(mu2-O2)][ReO4]2, 2, in which the coordinated [ReO4]- groups of 1 have been displaced by bridging O2(2-), derived from atmospheric O2. Finally, attempts to synthesise a [NpO2]+ analogue of have resulted only in the formation of [NpO2(TPPO)4][ReO4], 3, in which [ReO4]- acts solely as a counter anion. From these results it can be concluded that [ReO4]- will bond to [UO2]2+, but will be readily displaced by a more strongly coordinating ligand (e.g. peroxide) and will not coordinate to an actinyl cation with a lower charge, [NpO2]+, under the same reaction conditions.

Crystals of the title compound (1) contain two independent, centrosymmetric half-molecules per asymmetric unit. While both of these show Jahn-Teller elongated six-coordinate geometries, the lengths of the elongated Cu-N bonds in the two molecules differ by 0.117(2) A at 30 K. The structure of one of these molecules (molecule A) does not vary with temperature below 350 K. The other molecule (molecule B) shows Cu-N bond lengths that are temperature-dependent between 225 and 375 K, but do not vary further at lower temperature. This indicates a fluxional axis of Jahn-Teller elongation in this molecule at these higher temperatures. Consideration of the thermal parameters in these structures implies that the fluxionality in molecule B is frozen out near 150 K. This conclusion is supported by a Q-band powder EPR study. The d-d transition energies of molecules A and B have been calculated by several density function (DF) methods, including a time-dependent DF calculation. The crystallographic data have been reproduced using the vibronic coupling model of Burgi and Hitchman. This has shown that the different fluxionality regimes for molecules A and B are not a consequence of their different static molecular structures, but rather reflect their different local environments in the crystal.

Technetium, uranium and neptunium may all occur in the environment in more than one oxidation state (IV or VII, IV or VI and IV or V respectively). The surface of mackinawite, the first-formed iron sulfide phase in anoxic conditions, can promote redox changes so a series of laboratory experiments were carried out to explore the interactions of Tc, U and Np with this mineral. The products of reaction were characterised using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Technetium, added as TcO4(-), is reduced to oxidation state IV and forms a TcS(2)-like species. On oxidation of the mackinawite in air to form goethite, Tc remains in oxidation state IV but in an oxide, rather than a sulfide environment. At low concentrations, uranium forms uranyl surface complexes on oxidised regions of the mackinawite surface but at higher concentrations, the uranium promotes surface oxidation and forms a mixed oxidation state oxide phase. Neptunium is reduced to oxidation IV and forms a surface complex with surface sulfide ions. The remainder of the Np coordination sphere is filled with water molecules or hydroxide ions.

Technetium is a long-lived product of nuclear fission that readily forms the soluble pertechnetate anion [TcO(4)](-). Green rusts (layered hydrous oxides containing both Fe(II) and Fe(III) and with interlayer sulfate or carbonate anions) concentrate >99.8% of 99Tc, present as [TcO(4)](-), from aqueous solution, even in the presence of high concentrations of NaNO(3), a common constituent of radioactive waste streams. The mechanism of removal from solution is apparently reduction and formation of strong Tc(IV) surface complexes. X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that [TcO(4)](-) is indeed reduced by reaction with both sulfate- and carbonate-form green rusts and is found in a TcO(2)-like environment. On contact with air, the green rusts oxidize to poorly crystalline goethite but the Tc environment is unchanged. There is no increase in Tc solubility associated with oxidation of the host green rust. This behavior suggests that green rusts may be useful in the treatment of Tc-containing waste streams, in groundwater cleanup, and in restricting Tc migration from repositories.

The reaction of MnF(3) with 5,6-dimethylbenzotriazole (Me(2)BTAH) gives the [Mn(III)(8)] complex [Mn(8)O(4)(OMe)(2)(Me(2)BTA)(6)F(8)(Me(2)BTAH)(MeOH)(8)] and the [Mn(IV)(3)Mn(III)(10)] complex [Mn(13)O(12)(Me(2)BTA)(12)F(6)(MeOH)(10)(H(2)O)(2)]. The octametallic species is an "intermediate" in the formation of the tridecametallic cluster.

The reaction of [NEt(4)](2)[Fe(2)OCl(6)] with sodium benzoate, 4,6-dimethyl-2-hydroxypyrimidine (dmhp), and 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)ethane (H(3)thme) gives the undecametallic compound [NEt(4)][Fe(11)O(4)(O(2)CPh)(10)(thme)(4)(dmhp)(2)Cl(4)]. X-ray crystallography, EPR spectroscopy, bulk magnetic susceptibility studies, and low-temperature single-crystal magnetic measurements were used to characterize the compound. Magnetic measurements indicate an S = (11)/(2) ground state with the parameters g = 2.03 and D = -0.46 cm(-)(1). Single-crystal magnetic studies show hysteresis of molecular origin at T < 1.2 K with fast quantum mechanical tunneling at zero field.

The dodecametallic Cr(III) cluster [Cr(12)O(9)(OH)(3)(O(2)CCMe(3))(15)] has a ground spin state of S = 6 characterized by the spin Hamiltonian parameters g(ZZ)() = 1.965, g(XX)() = g(YY)() = 1.960, D(S=)()(6) = +0.088 cm(-)(1), and E(S=)()(6) = 0 (where D and E are the axial and rhombic zero-field splitting parameters, respectively) as determined by multifrequency EPR spectroscopy and magnetization studies. Micro-SQUID magnetization studies reveal steps due to the fine structure of the ground state, with the spacing between the steps in excellent agreement with the D(S=)()(6) value determined by EPR. Analysis of high-resolution optical data (MCD) allows us to determine the single-ion g values and D value (= -1.035 cm(-)(1)) of the constituent Cr(III) ions directly. A vector coupling analysis demonstrates that the cluster ZFS is almost entirely due to the single-ion component. Thus, the relative orientations of the local and cluster magnetic axes can lead to a cluster ZFS of opposite sign to the single-ion value, even when this is the only significant contribution.

The novel 8-coordinate zirconium compound (NH(4))(6)[Zr(PMo(12)O(40))(PMo(11)O(39))].26H(2)O (1) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and vibrational and (31)P NMR spectroscopy. It is the first example of a metal complex containing both parent, [PMo(12)O(40)](3)(-), and monovacant lacunary, [PMo(11)O(39)](7)(-), anions. Furthermore, this is the first crystallographic determination of the [PMo(11)O(39)](7)(-) anion.

The crystal structure of the title compound, nonaammonium (arsenic decatungstido)(arsenic heptatungstido)diaqua-mu-hydroxo-(hydroxyarsenido)dizirconium hexacosahydrate, which was obtained from the reaction of [NaAs(4)W(40)O(140)](27-) with Zr(IV), has been determined. The anionic complex consists of two hydroxyl-bridged seven-coordinate capped trigonal-prismatic zirconium ions, which are bonded to an [AsW(10)O(36)](9-) anion and to an [AsW(7)O(28)](11-) anion that has two [AsOH](2+) capping units. The asymmetric unit contains half of the complex, with one crystallographically independent Zr atom. Crystallographic m symmetry imposed by the monoclinic C2/m space group gives rise to the asymmetric unit comprising half of the complex with one crystallographically independent Zr atom.

An assay to detect UO(2)(2+) complexation was developed based on the chrome azurol S (CAS) assay for siderophores (B. Schwyn and J. B. Neilands, Anal. Biochem. 160:47-56, 1987) and was used to investigate the ability of fungal metabolites to complex actinides. In this assay the discoloration of two dyed agars (one containing a CAS-Fe(3+) dye and the other containing a CAS-UO(2)(2+) dye) caused by ligands was quantified. The assay was tested by using the siderophore desferrioxamine B (DFO), and the results showed that there was a regular, reproducible relationship between discoloration and the amount of siderophore added. The ratio of the discoloration on the CAS-UO(2)(2+) agar to the discoloration on the CAS-Fe(3+) agar was independent of the amount of siderophore added. A total of 113 fungi and yeasts were isolated from three soil samples taken from the Peak District National Park. The fungi were screened for the production of UO(2)(2+) chelators by using the CAS-based assay and were also tested specifically for hydroxamate siderophore production by using the hydroxamate siderophore auxotroph Aureobacterium flavescens JG-9. This organism is highly sensitive to the presence of hydroxamate siderophores. However, the CAS-based assay was found to be less sensitive than the A. flavescens JG-9 assay. No significant difference between the results for each site for the two tests was found. Three isolates were selected for further study and were identified as two Pencillium species and a Mucor species. Our results show that the new assay can be effectively used to screen fungi for the production of UO(2)(2+) chelating ligands. We suggest that hydroxamate siderophores can be produced by mucoraceous fungi.
