Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with an apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value is a relatively new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence that provides functional information on the lesion by measuring the microscopic movement of water molecules. While numerous studies have evaluated the promising role of DWI in musculoskeletal radiology, most have focused on tumorous diseases related to cellularity. This review article aims to summarize DWI-acquisition techniques, considering pitfalls such as T2 shine-through and T2 black-out, and their usefulness in interpreting musculoskeletal diseases with imaging. DWI is based on the Brownian motion of water molecules within the tissue, achieved by applying diffusion-sensitizing gradients. Regardless of the cellularity of the lesion, several pitfalls must be considered when interpreting DWI with ADC values in musculoskeletal radiology. This review discusses the application of DWI in musculoskeletal diseases, including tumor and tumor mimickers, as well as non-tumorous diseases, with a focus on lesions demonstrating T2 shine-through and T2 black-out effects. Understanding these pitfalls of DWI can provide clinically useful information, increase diagnostic accuracy, and improve patient management when added to conventional MRI in musculoskeletal diseases. This study aimed to investigate the Diffusion-Tensor-Imaging (DTI) potential in the detection of microstructural changes in prostate cancer (PCa) in relation to the diffusion weight (b-value) and the associated diffusion length lD. Thirty-two patients (age range = 50–87 years) with biopsy-proven PCa underwent Diffusion-Weighted-Imaging (DWI) at 3T, using single non-zero b-value or groups of b-values up to b = 2500 s/mm2. The DTI maps (mean-diffusivity, MD; fractional-anisotropy, FA; axial and radial diffusivity, D// and D┴), visual quality, and the association between DTI-metrics and Gleason Score (GS) and DTI-metrics and age were discussed in relation to diffusion compartments probed by water molecules at different b-values. DTI-metrics differentiated benign from PCa tissue (p ≤ 0.0005), with the best discriminative power versus GS at b-values ≥ 1500 s/mm2, and for b-values range 0–2000 s/mm2, when the lD is comparable to the size of the epithelial compartment. The strongest linear correlations between MD, D//, D┴, and GS were found at b = 2000 s/mm2 and for the range 0–2000 s/mm2. A positive correlation between DTI parameters and age was found in benign tissue. In conclusion, the use of the b-value range 0–2000 s/mm2 and b-value = 2000 s/mm2 improves the contrast and discriminative power of DTI with respect to PCa. The effect of microchannel height on acoustic streaming velocity and capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducer (CMUT) cell damping was investigated. Microchannels with heights ranging from 0.15 to 1.75 mm were used in experiments, and computational microchannel models with heights varying from 10 to 1800 micrometers were simulated. Both simulated and measured data show local minima and maxima of acoustic streaming efficiency associated with the wavelength of the 'bulk acoustic wave excited at 5 MHz frequency. Local minima occur at microchannel heights that are multiples of half the wavelength (150 μm), which are caused by destructive interference between excited and reflected acoustic waves. Therefore, microchannel heights that are not multiples of 150 μm are more favorable for higher acoustic streaming effectiveness since destructive interference decreases the acoustic streaming effectiveness by more than 4 times. On average, the experimental data show slightly higher velocities for smaller microchannels than the simulated data, but the overall observation of higher streaming velocities in larger microchannels is not altered. In additional simulation, at small microchannel heights (10–350 μm), local minima at microchannel heights that are multiples of 150 μm were observed, indicating the interference between excited and reflected waves and causing acoustic damping of comparatively compliant CMUT membranes. Increasing the microchannel height to over 100 μm tends to eliminate the acoustic damping effect as the local minima of the CMUT membrane swing amplitude approach the maximum value of 42 nm, which is the calculated amplitude of the freely swinging membrane under the described conditions. Simple Summary: VERDICT (Vascular, Extracellular, and Restricted DIffusion for Cytometry in Tumours) is a diffusion MRI framework for the characterisation of different components of tumours, which has shown diagnostic utility for body cancer. The aim of this study was to extend the VERDICT framework to comprehensively characterise brain tumours, which is challenging due to the complexity of brain tissues. The resulting biomarkers showed agreement with histology and followed the expected trends when comparing different tumour types and sub-regions. These preliminary results hold promise for the non-invasive characterisation of brain tumours by VERDICT-MRI, which would be an important tool for diagnosis and monitoring of treatment effects. The aim of this work was to extend the VERDICT-MRI framework for modelling brain tumours, enabling comprehensive characterisation of both intra- and peritumoural areas with a particular focus on cellular and vascular features. Diffusion MRI data were acquired with multiple b-values (ranging from 50 to 3500 s/mm2), diffusion times, and echo times in 21 patients with brain tumours of different types and with a wide range of cellular and vascular features. We fitted a selection of diffusion models that resulted from the combination of different types of intracellular, extracellular, and vascular compartments to the signal. We compared the models using criteria for parsimony while aiming at good characterisation of all of the key histological brain tumour components. Finally, we evaluated the parameters of the best-performing model in the differentiation of tumour histotypes, using ADC (Apparent Diffusion Coefficient) as a clinical standard reference, and compared them to histopathology and relevant perfusion MRI metrics. The best-performing model for VERDICT in brain tumours was a three-compartment model accounting for anisotropically hindered and isotropically restricted diffusion and isotropic pseudo-diffusion. VERDICT metrics were compatible with the histological appearance of low-grade gliomas and metastases and reflected differences found by histopathology between multiple biopsy samples within tumours. The comparison between histotypes showed that both the intracellular and vascular fractions tended to be higher in tumours with high cellularity (glioblastoma and metastasis), and quantitative analysis showed a trend toward higher values of the intracellular fraction (fic) within the tumour core with increasing glioma grade. We also observed a trend towards a higher free water fraction in vasogenic oedemas around metastases compared to infiltrative oedemas around glioblastomas and WHO 3 gliomas as well as the periphery of low-grade gliomas. In conclusion, we developed and evaluated a multi-compartment diffusion MRI model for brain tumours based on the VERDICT framework, which showed agreement between non-invasive microstructural estimates and histology and encouraging trends for the differentiation of tumour types and sub-regions. Deep learning, which is a subfield of machine learning, has opened a new era for the development of neural networks. The auto-encoder is a key component of deep structure, which can be used to realize transfer learning and plays an important role in both unsupervised learning and non-linear feature extraction. By highlighting the contributions and challenges of recent research papers, this work aims to review state-of-the-art auto-encoder algorithms. Firstly, we introduce the basic auto-encoder as well as its basic concept and structure. Secondly, we present a comprehensive summarization of different variants of the auto-encoder. Thirdly, we analyze and study auto-encoders from three different perspectives. We also discuss the relationships between auto-encoders, shallow models and other deep learning models. The auto-encoder and its variants have successfully been applied in a wide range of fields, such as pattern recognition, computer vision, data generation, recommender systems, etc. Then, we focus on the available toolkits for auto-encoders. Finally, this paper summarizes the future trends and challenges in designing and training auto-encoders. We hope that this survey will provide a good reference when using and designing AE models. Underground storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in geological formations plays a vital role in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. It involves capturing CO2 emissions from industrial processes and power generation and storing them underground, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and curbing the impact of climate change. This review paper features a comparative analysis of CO2 storage in deep saline aquifers, depleted reservoirs, coal seams, basaltic formations and clastic formations. The comparison has been drawn based upon seven factors carefully selected from the literature, i.e., safety, storage capacity, injection rates, efficiency, residual trapping, containment and integrity and potential to improve, and all of these factors have been rated from low (1) to high (5) based upon their individual traits. Based upon these factors, an overall M.H. rating system has been developed to categorize geological formations for CO2 storage and it is observed that deep water aquifers and basaltic formations are the most effective options for CO2 storage. Lastly, a detailed way forward has been suggested, which can help researchers and policymakers to find more viable ways to enhance the efficiency of CO2 storage in various geological formations. Simple Summary: Although the extensive use of highly active oncological treatments has led to an increased rate of secondary resections in patients with colorectal liver metastases, it has led to questions regarding the correct surgical management of disappearing liver metastases (DLM) and small residual lesions during chemotherapy. Our study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcome of DLM and small remnant liver metastases (≤10 mm) assessed by means of hepatobiliary contrast-enhanced and diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DW-MRI) in metastatic colorectal cancer patients with first-line chemotherapy treatment in order to support the clinical management and decision-making process for these liver lesions. Our results showed that DLM assessed via hepatobiliary contrast-enhanced and DW-MRI very probably indicate a complete response in patients without chemotherapy-induced sinusoidal obstruction syndrome. In these patients, a follow-up with liver MRI can be considered, and resection should be performed in the case of disease relapse. The surgical removal of small remnants of liver metastases should always be advocated whenever technically possible. We aimed to evaluate the outcome of the disappearance or small remnants of colorectal liver metastases during first-line chemotherapy assessed by hepatobiliary contrast-enhanced and diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DW-MRI). Consecutive patients with at least one disappearing liver metastasis (DLM) or small residual liver metastases (≤10 mm) assessed by hepatobiliary contrast-enhanced and DW-MRI during first-line chemotherapy were included. Liver lesions were categorized into three groups: DLM; residual tiny liver metastases (RTLM) when ≤5 mm; small residual liver metastases (SRLM) when >5mm and ≤10 mm. The outcome of resected liver metastases was assessed in terms of pathological response, whereas lesions left in situ were evaluated in terms of local relapse or progression. Fifty-two outpatients with 265 liver lesions were radiologically reviewed; 185 metastases fulfilled the inclusion criteria: 40 DLM, 82 RTLM and 60 SRLM. We observed a pCR rate of 75% (3/4) in resected DLM and 33% (12/36) of local relapse for DLM left in situ. We observed a risk of relapse of 29% and 57% for RTLM and SRLM left in situ, respectively, and a pCR rate of about 40% overall for resected lesions. The degeneration of osteochondral tissue represents one of the major causes of disability in modern society and it is expected to fuel the demand for new solutions to repair and regenerate the damaged articular joints. In particular, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common complication in articular diseases and a leading cause of chronic disability affecting a steady increasing number of people. The regeneration of osteochondral (OC) defects is one of the most challenging tasks in orthopedics since this anatomical region is composed of different tissues, characterized by antithetic features and functionalities, in tight connection to work together as a joint. The altered structural and mechanical joint environment impairs the natural tissue metabolism, thus making OC regeneration even more challenging. In this scenario, marine-derived ingredients elicit ever-increased interest for biomedical applications as a result of their outstanding mechanical and multiple biologic properties. The review highlights the possibility to exploit such unique features using a combination of bio-inspired synthesis process and 3D manufacturing technologies, relevant to generate compositionally and structurally graded hybrid constructs reproducing the smart architecture and biomechanical functions of natural OC regions. Microfluidics is a rapidly growing discipline that involves studying and manipulating fluids at reduced length scale and volume, typically on the scale of micro- or nanoliters. Under the reduced length scale and larger surface-to-volume ratio, advantages of low reagent consumption, faster reaction kinetics, and more compact systems are evident in microfluidics. However, miniaturization of microfluidic chips and systems introduces challenges of stricter tolerances in designing and controlling them for interdisciplinary applications. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have brought innovation to microfluidics from design, simulation, automation, and optimization to bioanalysis and data analytics. In microfluidics, the Navier–Stokes equations, which are partial differential equations describing viscous fluid motion that in complete form are known to not have a general analytical solution, can be simplified and have fair performance through numerical approximation due to low inertia and laminar flow. Approximation using neural networks trained by rules of physical knowledge introduces a new possibility to predict the physicochemical nature. The combination of microfluidics and automation can produce large amounts of data, where features and patterns that are difficult to discern by a human can be extracted by machine learning. Therefore, integration with AI introduces the potential to revolutionize the microfluidic workflow by enabling the precision control and automation of data analysis. Deployment of smart microfluidics may be tremendously beneficial in various applications in the future, including high-throughput drug discovery, rapid point-of-care-testing (POCT), and personalized medicine. In recent years, artificial intelligence technologies in vision tasks have gradually begun to be applied to the physical world, proving they are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Thus, the importance of improving robustness against adversarial attacks has emerged as an urgent issue in vision tasks. This article aims to provide a historical summary of the evolution of adversarial attacks and defense methods on CNN-based models and also introduces studies focusing on brain-inspired models that mimic the visual cortex, which is resistant to adversarial attacks. As the origination of CNN models was in the application of physiological findings related to the visual cortex of the time, new physiological studies related to the visual cortex provide an opportunity to create more robust models against adversarial attacks. Sport management is a rapidly changing and highly competitive field. With over 200 graduate and over 400 undergraduate degree programs in the United States, faculty are tasked with regular assessment of their program's curriculum to ensure that students graduate with the knowledge, skills, values, and opportunities that make them marketable in a competitive marketplace. The purpose of this study was to describe and identify trends in the admission requirements, coursework, and culminating experiences for degree completion in sport management graduate programs in the United States. Content analysis was used to collect data from university websites and course catalogs on 230 sport management master's degree programs. Minimum grade point average (GPA) standards were listed for 52% of programs, 44% required test scores for admission, and 28% did not require either a test score or GPA. Law, marketing, and research methods were the only three courses required by more than 70% of programs. At least one research-related course (research methods, statistics, or sports data analytics) was required by 78% of programs. One third of programs prescribed a specific course sequence to earn a graduate degree, while two thirds provided students with options on how the degree could be completed. Image denoising is an important preprocessing step in low-level vision problems involving biomedical images. Noise removal techniques can greatly benefit raw corrupted magnetic resonance images (MRI). It has been discovered that the MR data is corrupted by a mixture of Gaussian-impulse noise caused by detector flaws and transmission errors. This paper proposes a deep generative model (GenMRIDenoiser) for dealing with this mixed noise scenario. This work makes four contributions. To begin, Wasserstein generative adversarial network (WGAN) is used in model training to mitigate the problem of vanishing gradient, mode collapse, and convergence issues encountered while training a vanilla GAN. Second, a perceptually motivated loss function is used to guide the training process in order to preserve the low-level details in the form of high-frequency components in the image. Third, batch renormalization is used between the convolutional and activation layers to prevent performance degradation under the assumption of non-independent and identically distributed (non-iid) data. Fourth, global feature attention module (GFAM) is appended at the beginning and end of the parallel ensemble blocks to capture the long-range dependencies that are often lost due to the small receptive field of convolutional filters. The experimental results over synthetic data and MRI stack obtained from real MR scanners indicate the potential utility of the proposed technique across a wide range of degradation scenarios. It is challenging to overcome motion artifacts in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of the abdomen. This study aimed to evaluate the image quality of motion-corrected DWI of the liver using non-rigid registration in comparison with conventional DWI (c-DWI) in patients with liver diseases. Eighty-nine patients who underwent 3-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the liver were retrospectively included. DWI was performed using c-DWI and non-rigid motion-corrected (moco) DWI was performed in addition to c-DWI. The image quality and conspicuity of hepatic focal lesions were scored using a five-point scale by two radiologists and compared between the two DWI image sets. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) was measured in three regions of the liver parenchyma and in hepatic focal lesions, and compared between the two DWI image sets. Moco-DWI achieved higher scores in image quality compared to c-DWI in terms of liver edge sharpness and hepatic vessel margin delineation. The conspicuity scores of hepatic focal lesions were higher in moco-DWI. The standard deviation values of ADC of the liver parenchyma were lower in the moco-DWI than in the c-DWI. The manipulation of biomedical particles, such as separating circulating tumor cells from blood, based on standing surface acoustic wave (SSAW) has been widely used due to its advantages of label-free approaches and good biocompatibility. However, most of the existing SSAW-based separation technologies are dedicated to isolate bioparticles in only two different sizes. It is still challenging to fractionate various particles in more than two different sizes with high efficiency and accuracy. In this work, to tackle the problems of low efficiency for multiple cell particle separation, integrated multi-stage SSAW devices with different wavelengths driven by modulated signals were designed and studied. A three-dimensional microfluidic device model was proposed and analyzed using the finite element method (FEM). In addition, the effect of the slanted angle, acoustic pressure, and the resonant frequency of the SAW device on the particle separation were systemically studied. From the theoretical results, the separation efficiency of three different size particles based on the multi-stage SSAW devices reached 99%, which was significantly improved compared with conventional single-stage SSAW devices. This paper presents a novel load modulation network to realize a broadband Doherty power amplifier (DPA). The proposed load modulation network consists of two generalized transmission lines and a modified coupler. A comprehensive theoretical analysis is carried out to explain the operation principles of the proposed DPA. The analysis of the normalized frequency bandwidth characteristic shows that a theoretical relative bandwidth of approximately 86% can be obtained across a normalized frequency range of 0.4–1.0. The complete design process that allows the design of the large-relative-bandwidth DPA based on derived parameter solutions is presented. A broadband DPA operating between 1.0 GHz and 2.5 GHz was fabricated for validation. Measurements demonstrate that the DPA can deliver an output power of 43.9–44.5 dBm with a drain efficiency of 63.7–71.6% in the 1.0–2.5 GHz frequency band at the saturation level. The encapsulation of particles and cells in droplets is highly relevant in biomedical engineering as well as in material science. So far, however, the majority of the studies in this area have focused on the encapsulation of particles or cells suspended in Newtonian liquids. We here studied the particle encapsulation phenomenon in a T-junction microfluidic device, using a non-Newtonian viscoelastic hyaluronic acid solution in phosphate buffer saline as suspending liquid for the particles. We first studied the non-Newtonian droplet formation mechanism, finding that the data for the normalised droplet length scaled as the Newtonian ones. We then performed viscoelastic encapsulation experiments, where we exploited the fact that particles self-assembled in equally-spaced structures before approaching the encapsulation area, to then identify some experimental conditions for which the single encapsulation efficiency was larger than the stochastic limit predicted by the Poisson statistics. Core–shell particles are micro- or nanoparticles with solid, liquid, or gas cores encapsulated by protective solid shells. The unique composition of core and shell materials imparts smart properties on the particles. Core–shell particles are gaining increasing attention as tuneable and versatile carriers for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications including targeted drug delivery, controlled drug release, and biosensing. This review provides an overview of fabrication methods for core–shell particles followed by a brief discussion of their application and a detailed analysis of their manipulation including assembly, sorting, and triggered release. We compile current methodologies employed for manipulation of core–shell particles and demonstrate how existing methods of assembly and sorting micro/nanospheres can be adopted or modified for core–shell particles. This review considers and systematizes the results of studying the deactivation of hydrotreatment catalysts currently available in the scientific and technical literature. The effect the composition of the feedstock and the conditions of hydrotreatment have on the coking of catalysts is shown. The reasons for the morphological changes of the active component and the possibility of reducing this type of catalyst deactivation during commercial operation are considered. The effect of a pressure drop on the run time, the action of catalyst poisons, and the ways, in which they enters the hydrotreatment distillates is shown. Microbial single-cell genomics (SCG) provides access to the genomes of rare and uncultured microorganisms and is a complementary method to metagenomics. Due to the femtogram-levels of DNA in a single microbial cell, sequencing the genome requires whole genome amplification (WGA) as a preliminary step. However, the most common WGA method, multiple displacement amplification (MDA), is known to be costly and biased against specific genomic regions, preventing high-throughput applications and resulting in uneven genome coverage. Thus, obtaining high-quality genomes from many taxa, especially minority members of microbial communities, becomes difficult. Here, we present a volume reduction approach that significantly reduces costs while improving genome coverage and uniformity of DNA amplification products in standard 384-well plates. Our results demonstrate that further volume reduction in specialized and complex setups (e.g., microfluidic chips) is likely unnecessary to obtain higher-quality microbial genomes. This volume reduction method makes SCG more feasible for future studies, thus helping to broaden our knowledge on the diversity and function of understudied and uncharacterized microorganisms in the environment. Osteolytic lesions can be seen in both multiple myeloma (MM), and osteolytic bone metastasis on computed tomography (CT) scans. We sought to assess the feasibility of a CT-based radiomics model to distinguish MM from metastasis. This study retrospectively included patients with pre-treatment thoracic or abdominal contrast-enhanced CT from institution 1 (training set: 175 patients with 425 lesions) and institution 2 (external test set: 50 patients with 85 lesions). After segmenting osteolytic lesions on CT images, 1218 radiomics features were extracted. A random forest (RF) classifier was used to build the radiomics model with 10-fold cross-validation. Three radiologists distinguished MM from metastasis using a five-point scale, both with and without the assistance of RF model results. Diagnostic performance was evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC). The AUC of the RF model was 0.807 and 0.762 for the training and test set, respectively. The AUC of the RF model and the radiologists (0.653–0.778) was not significantly different for the test set (p ≥ 0.179). The AUC of all radiologists was significantly increased (0.833–0.900) when they were assisted by RF model results (p < 0.001). Background: To assess the diagnostic performance of diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the characterization of mediastinal lymph nodes and compare them with morphological parameters. Methods: A total of 43 untreated patients with mediastinal lymphadenopathy underwent DW and T2 weighted MRI followed by pathological examination in the period from January 2015 to June 2016. The presence of diffusion restriction, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value, short axis dimensions (SAD), and T2 heterogeneous signal intensity of the lymph nodes were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and forward step-wise multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: The ADC of malignant lymphadenopathy was significantly lower (0.873 ± 0.109 × 10−3 mm2/s) than that of benign lymphadenopathy (1.663 ± 0.311 × 10−3 mm2/s) (p = 0.001). When an ADC of 1.0955 × 10−3 mm2/s was used as a threshold value for differentiating malignant from benign nodes, the best results were obtained with a sensitivity of 94%, a specificity of 96%, and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.996. A model combining the other three MRI criteria showed less sensitivity (88.9%) and specificity (92%) compared to the ADC-only model. Weakly supervised pose estimation can be used to assist unsupervised body part segmentation and concealed item detection. The accuracy of pose estimation is essential for precise body part segmentation and accurate concealed item detection. In this paper, we show how poses obtained from an RGB pretrained 2D pose detector can be modified for the backscatter image domain. The 2D poses are refined using RANSAC bundle adjustment to minimize the projection loss in 3D. Furthermore, we show how 2D poses can be optimized using a newly proposed 3D-to-2D pose correction network weakly supervised with pose prior regularizers and multi-view pose and posture consistency losses. The optimized 2D poses are used to segment human body parts. We then train a body-part-aware anomaly detection network to detect foreign (concealed threat) objects on segmented body parts. Our work is applied to the TSA passenger screening dataset containing millimeter wave scan images of airport travelers annotated with only binary labels that indicate whether a foreign object is concealed on a body part. Our proposed approach significantly improves the detection accuracy of TSA 2D backscatter images in existing works with a state-of-the-art performance of 97% F1-score, 0.0559 log-loss on the TSA-PSD test-set, and a 74% reduction in 2D pose error. Simple Summary: Neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NAST) is given before surgery to reduce tumor burden in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), which is an aggressive breast cancer subtype that accounts for approximately 30% of breast cancer-related mortalities. Unfortunately, approximately 50% of TNBC patients do not respond to NAST and develop distant spread within 5 years. Reliable clinical methods are needed to determine non-responders to NAST in order to avoid the severe toxicity of ineffective regimens and offer novel targeted treatments. The purpose of this study was to investigate functional tumor volume measured from dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI for early assessment of NAST response in TNBC. Our study demonstrated the potential of functional tumor volume, evaluated as early as after 2 and 4 cycles of NAST, to serve as a non-invasive biomarker for the prediction of treatment response in TNBC patients. Early assessment of neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NAST) response for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is critical for patient care in order to avoid the unnecessary toxicity of an ineffective treatment. We assessed functional tumor volumes (FTVs) from dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI after 2 cycles (C2) and 4 cycles (C4) of NAST as predictors of response in TNBC. A group of 100 patients with stage I-III TNBC who underwent DCE MRI at baseline, C2, and C4 were included in this study. Tumors were segmented on DCE images of 1 min and 2.5 min post-injection. FTVs were measured using the optimized percentage enhancement (PE) and signal enhancement ratio (SER) thresholds. The Mann–Whitney test was used to compare the performance of the FTVs at C2 and C4. Of the 100 patients, 49 (49%) had a pathologic complete response (pCR) and 51 (51%) had a non-pCR. The maximum area under the receiving operating characteristic curve (AUC) for predicting the treatment response was 0.84 (p < 0.001) for FTV at C4 followed by FTV at C2 (AUC = 0.82, p < 0.001). The FTV measured at baseline was not able to discriminate pCR from non-pCR. FTVs measured on DCE MRI at C2, as well as at C4, of NAST can potentially predict pCR and non-pCR in TNBC patients. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, the most prevalent viral infection that typically lasts for a lifetime, is associated with frequent outbreaks of oral and genital lesions. Oral herpes infection is mainly associated with HSV-1 through oral contact, while genital herpes originates due to HSV-2 and is categorized under sexually transmitted diseases. Immunocompromised patients and children are more prone to HSV infection. Over the years, various attempts have been made to find potential targets for the prevention of HSV infection. Despite the global distress caused by HSV infections, there are no licensed prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines available on the market against HSV. Nevertheless, there are numerous promising candidates in the pre-clinical and clinical stages of study. The present review gives an overview of two herpes viruses, their history, and life cycle, and different treatments adopted presently against HSV infections and their associated limitations. Majorly, the review covers the recent investigations being carried out globally regarding various vaccine strategies against oral and genital herpes virus infections, together with the recent and advanced nanotechnological approaches for vaccine development. Relevant to co-clinical trials, the goal of this work was to assess repeatability, reproducibility, and bias of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) for preclinical MRIs using standardized procedures for comparison to performance of clinical MRIs. A temperature-controlled phantom provided an absolute reference standard to measure spatial uniformity of these performance metrics. Seven institutions participated in the study, wherein diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data were acquired over multiple days on 10 preclinical scanners, from 3 vendors, at 6 field strengths. Centralized versus site-based analysis was compared to illustrate incremental variance due to processing workflow. At magnet isocenter, short-term (intra-exam) and long-term (multiday) repeatability were excellent at within-system coefficient of variance, wCV [±CI] = 0.73% [0.54%, 1.12%] and 1.26% [0.94%, 1.89%], respectively. The cross-system reproducibility coefficient, RDC [±CI] = 0.188 [0.129, 0.343] µm2/ms, corresponded to 17% [12%, 31%] relative to the reference standard. Absolute bias at isocenter was low (within 4%) for 8 of 10 systems, whereas two high-bias (>10%) scanners were primary contributors to the relatively high RDC. Significant additional variance (>2%) due to site-specific analysis was observed for 2 of 10 systems. Base-level technical bias, repeatability, reproducibility, and spatial uniformity patterns were consistent with human MRIs (scaled for bore size). The growth of sport science technology is enabling more sporting teams to implement athlete monitoring practices related to performance testing and load monitoring. Despite the increased emphasis on youth athlete development, the lack of longitudinal athlete monitoring literature in youth athletes is concerning, especially for indoor sports such as basketball. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of six different athlete monitoring methods over 10 weeks of youth basketball training. Fourteen state-level youth basketball players (5 males and 9 females; 15.1 ± 1.0 years) completed this study during their pre-competition phase prior to their national basketball tournament. Daily wellness and activity surveys were completed using the OwnUrGoal mobile application, along with heart rate (HR) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) recordings at each state training session, and weekly performance testing (3x countermovement jumps [CMJs], and 3x isometric mid-thigh pulls [IMTPs]). All of the athlete monitoring methods demonstrated the coaching staff's training intent to maintain performance and avoid spikes in workload. Monitoring IMU data combined with PlayerLoad™ data analysis demonstrated more effectiveness for monitoring accumulated load (AL) compared to HR analysis. All six methods of athlete monitoring detected similar trends for all sessions despite small-trivial correlations between each method (Pearson's correlation: −0.24 < r < 0.28). The use of subjective monitoring questionnaire applications, such as OwnUrGoal, is recommended for youth sporting clubs, given its practicability and low-cost. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of AudioVisual pattern on the muscle activity amplitude during mental imagery. For this purpose, 25 female students (20.73 ± 1.56 years old) engaged in mental imagery (internal, external, and kinesthetic) in three conditions: No pattern, Visual pattern, and AudioVisual pattern. The angular velocity of the elbow joint in the basketball jump shot skill was sonified and presented to the subjects as an auditory pattern. The results showed that the muscle activity amplitude in AudioVisual–kinesthetic and AudioVisual–internal (and not external) conditions is higher than for other conditions. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between Visual–kinesthetic imagery ability and muscle activity amplitude in the AudioVisual pattern condition and in kinesthetic and internal imagery. In addition, the muscle activity amplitude of high and low Visual–kinesthetic imagery ability conditions were only different in the AudioVisual pattern. The superiority of the AudioVisual condition is most likely due to the auditory information presented in this research being closely related to the kinesthetic sense of movement. Background: To evaluate the association between perfusion parameters derived from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) with prognostic factors in primary rectal cancer patients. Methods: A sample of 51 patients with pathologically proven rectal adenocarcinoma through surgery were retrospectively enrolled. All the patients underwent preoperative DCE-MRI including 3D-spoiled gradient echo. Two radiologists determined the tumor border after radiologic–pathologic correlation and drew regions of interest. The perfusion parameters, including the volume transfer constant (Ktrans), were calculated under the extended Toft model. The prognostic factors included TN stage, circumferential resection margin, extramural venous invasion, Kirsten-ras mutation, tumor size, carcinoembryonic antigen, and tumor differentiation. The association was assessed via correlation or t-test. For significant prognostic factors, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed to estimate the diagnostic predictive values. Results: Ktrans only showed a significant difference according to tumor differentiation, between the well-differentiated (n = 6) and moderately differentiated (n = 45) groups (0.127 ± 0.032, 0.084 ± 0.036, p = 0.036). The AUC was 0.838 (95% CI, 0.702–0.929), and the estimated accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 87%, 90%, and 60%, respectively. Influenza pneumonia is a severe complication caused by inflammation of the lungs following infection with seasonal and pandemic strains of influenza A virus (IAV), that can result in lung pathology, respiratory failure, and death. There is currently no treatment for severe disease and pneumonia caused by IAV. Antivirals are available but are only effective if treatment is initiated within 48 h of onset of symptoms. Influenza complications and mortality are often associated with high viral load and an excessive lung inflammatory cytokine response. Therefore, we simultaneously targeted the virus and inflammation. We used the antiviral oseltamivir and the anti-inflammatory drug etanercept to dampen TNF signaling after the onset of clinical signs to treat pneumonia in a mouse model of respiratory IAV infection. The combined treatment down-regulated the inflammatory cytokines TNF, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-12p40, and the chemokines CCL2, CCL5, and CXCL10. Consequently, combined treatment with oseltamivir and a signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) inhibitor effectively reduced clinical disease and lung pathology. Combined treatment using etanercept or STAT3 inhibitor and oseltamivir dampened an overlapping set of cytokines. Thus, combined therapy targeting a specific cytokine or cytokine signaling pathway and an antiviral drug provide an effective treatment strategy for ameliorating IAV pneumonia. Background: The study was undertaken to compare the diagnostic performance of diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) with the standard monoexponential (ME) apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) model in the detection of significant prostate cancer (PCa), using whole-mount histopathology of radical prostatectomy specimens as a reference standard. Methods: 155 patients with prostate cancer had undergone multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) at 3T before prostatectomy. Quantitative diffusion parameters—the apparent diffusion coefficient corrected for non-Gaussian behavior (Dapp), kurtosis (K), ADC1200, and ADC2000 were correlated with Gleason score and compared between cancerous and benign tissue and between GS ≤ 3 + 3 and GS ≥ 3 + 4 tumors. Results: The mean values of all diffusion parameters (Dapp, K, ADC1200, ADC2000) were significantly different both between malignant and benign tissue and between GS ≤ 3 + 3 and GS ≥ 3 + 4 tumors. Although the kurtosis model was better fitted to DWI data, the diagnostic performance in receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of DKI and the standard ADC model in the detection of significant PCa was similar in the peripheral zone (PZ) and in peripheral and transitional zones (TZ) together. In conclusion, our study was not able to demonstrate a clear superiority of the kurtosis model over standard ADC in the diagnosis of significant PCa in PZ and in both zones combined. The surface acoustic wave (SAW) properties of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO4, KTP) single crystal were evaluated by numerical methods. The phase velocity, electromechanical coupling coefficient, power flow deflection angle, and temperature coefficient of delay (TCD) were determined for different crystal cuts of KTP. It was shown that SAW has the electromechanical coupling coefficient of 0.59% and the TCD of 62 ppm/°C on the Z-cut and wave propagation direction along the crystal X + 70°-axis. For the Z-cut and wave propagation direction along the X-axis, the pseudo-surface wave (PSAW) is characterized by the coupling coefficient of 0.46% and the TCD value of 57 ppm/°C. Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface. For various reasons, almost 95% of these areas remain unexplored. Underwater wireless communication (UWC) has widespread applications, including real-time aquatic data collection, naval surveillance, natural disaster prevention, archaeological expeditions, oil and gas exploration, shipwreck exploration, maritime security, and the monitoring of aquatic species and water contamination. The promising concept of the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is having a great influence in several areas, for example, in small research facilities and average-sized harbors, as well as in huge unexplored areas of ocean. The IoUT has emerged as an innovative technology with the potential to develop a smart ocean. The IoUT framework integrates different underwater communication techniques such as optical, magnetic induction, and acoustic signals. It is capable of revolutionizing industrial projects, scientific research, and business. The key enabler technology for the IoUT is the underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN); however, at present, this is characterized by limitations in reliability, long propagation delays, high energy consumption, a dynamic topology, and limited bandwidth. This study examines the literature to identify potential challenges and risks, as well as mitigating solutions, associated with the IoUT. Our findings reveal that the key contributing elements to the challenges facing the IoUT are underwater communications, energy storage, latency, mobility, a lack of standardization, transmission media, transmission range, and energy constraints. In this conceptual paper, we contextualise ongoing attempts to manage challenge dynamics in talent systems in sport. Firstly, we review the broad literature base related to biological maturation, relative age, and the proposed interventions to mitigate effects. We suggest that the relative age effect may be a population level effect, indicative of deeper phenomena, rather than having a direct effect on challenge levels. In contrast, we suggest that biological maturation has a direct effect on challenge at the individual level. Therefore, our main critique of many existing approaches to the management of challenge is a lack of individual nuance and flexibility. We suggest the necessity for talent systems to adopt a more holistic approach, conceptualising biological maturation and relative age within a broader field of "push and pull factors" that impact challenge dynamics in talent development in sport. Finally, we provide practical guidance for talent systems in their approach to relative age and biological maturation, recognising that there is no "gold standard". Instead, there is a need to recognize the highly individual and contextual nature of these concepts, focusing on strategic coherence through talent systems for the management of selection and development processes. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are double-layered lipid membrane vesicles released by cells. Currently, EVs are attracting a lot of attention in the biological and medical fields due to their role as natural carriers of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Thus, they can transport useful genomic information from their parental cell through body fluids, promoting cell-to-cell communication even between different organs. Due to their functionality as cargo carriers and their protein expression, they can play an important role as possible diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in various types of diseases, e.g., cancers, neurodegenerative, and autoimmune diseases. Today, given the invaluable importance of EVs, there are some pivotal challenges to overcome in terms of their isolation. Conventional methods have some limitations: they are influenced by the starting sample, might present low throughput and low purity, and sometimes a lack of reproducibility, being operator dependent. During the past few years, several microfluidic approaches have been proposed to address these issues. In this review, we summarize the most important microfluidic-based devices for EV isolation, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages compared to existing technology, as well as the current state of the art from the perspective of the use of these devices in clinical applications. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are DNA viruses that are common among humans. Severely immunocompromised patients are at increased risk of developing HSV or CMV disease due to a weakened immune system. Antiviral therapy can be challenging because these drugs have a narrow therapeutic window and show significant pharmacokinetic variability. Above that, immunocompromised patients have various comorbidities like impaired renal function and are exposed to polypharmacy. This scoping review discusses the current pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) knowledge of antiviral drugs for HSV and CMV treatment in immunocompromised patients. HSV and CMV treatment guidelines are discussed, and multiple treatment interventions are proposed: early detection of drug resistance; optimization of dose to target concentration by therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of nucleoside analogs; the introduction of new antiviral drugs; alternation between compounds with different toxicity profiles; and combinations of synergistic antiviral drugs. This research will also serve as guidance for future research, which should focus on prospective evaluation of the benefit of each of these interventions in randomized controlled trials. The field of coordination chemistry has undergone rapid transformation from preparation of monometallic complexes to multimetallic complexes. So far numerous multimetallic coordination complexes have been synthesized. Multimetallic coordination complexes with well-defined architectures are often called as metal organic polygons and polyhedra (MOPs). In recent past, MOPs have received tremendous attention due to their potential applicability in various emerging fields. However, the field of coordination chemistry of MOPs often suffer set back due to the instability of coordination complexes particularly in aqueous environment-mostly by aqueous solvent and atmospheric moisture. Accordingly, the fate of the field does not rely only on the water solubilities of newly synthesized MOPs but very much dependent on their stabilities both in solution and solid state. The present review discusses several methodologies to prepare MOPs and investigates their stabilities under various circumstances. Simple Summary: Whilst multiple myeloma (MM) remains incurable, two clinical priorities are to prolong remission and reduce complications, of which fragility fractures are a major source of morbidity. To this end, there is the need to develop biomarkers that can accurately track tumour burden and bone loss to guide treatment decisions. Here, we conducted a pilot feasibility study exploring the value of novel serum bone turnover and plasma cell burden markers and Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DW-MRI) when added to standard clinical assessment in patients with MM, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and smouldering MM (SMM). We show serum DKK1 and BCMA as possible correlates of tumour burden, and that serum sclerostin may correlate with bone mineral density. Furthermore, we validate DW-MRI in longitudinal assessment of tumour volume. Our study highlights emerging serum and radiological biomarkers for assessment of tumour burden and bone loss, which require further study in larger cohorts to validate these findings and understand their clinical utility. Novel biomarkers for tumour burden and bone disease are required to guide clinical management of plasma cell dyscrasias. Recently, bone turnover markers (BTMs) and Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DW-MRI) have been explored, although their role in the prospective assessment of multiple myeloma (MM) and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is unclear. Here, we conducted a pilot observational cohort feasibility study combining serum BTMs and DW-MRI in addition to standard clinical assessment. Fifty-five patients were recruited (14 MGUS, 15 smouldering MM, 14 new MM and 12 relapsed MM) and had DW-MRI and serum biomarkers (P1NP, CTX-1, ALP, DKK1, sclerostin, RANKL:OPG and BCMA) measured at baseline and 6-month follow-up. Serum sclerostin positively correlated with bone mineral density (r = 0.40−0.54). At baseline, serum BCMA correlated with serum paraprotein (r = 0.42) and serum DKK1 correlated with serum free light chains (r = 0.67); the longitudinal change in both biomarkers differed between International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG)-defined responders and non-responders. Myeloma Response Assessment and Diagnosis System (MY-RADS) scoring of serial DW-MRI correlated with conventional IMWG response criteria for measuring longitudinal changes in tumour burden. Overall, our pilot study suggests candidate radiological and serum biomarkers of tumour burden and bone loss in MM/MGUS, which warrant further exploration in larger cohorts to validate the findings and to better understand their clinical utility. Although dancers have noted using imagery to mentally rehearse a routine, understand and reinforce movement, inspire strong emotions, and lower arousal levels, this finding is specific to adult dancers, overlooking imagery use with young dancers. The current study qualitatively examined the 4 Ws of imagery use (where, when, what, and why) with female dancers 7–14 years of age. Twenty-three female dancers (Mage = 10.43, SD = 2.19) from various dance styles participated in 1 of 4 focus-group discussions. Thematic analysis revealed findings similar to those identified in the domains of both adult dance and children's sport. There were, however, findings emerging from the current study specific to young female dancers. These findings are provided, in addition to practical implications for dance instructors. Functional imagery training (FIT) extends multisensory imagery training by involving athletes with goal setting and appraisal. The authors measured the effect of FIT on 24 professional soccer players' grit, a personality trait associated with perseverance for a long-term goal. In a stepped-wedge design, an immediate (n = 9) and a delayed (n = 10) group received FIT at Week 1 or 6 and were measured at Week 12. A self-selected control group (n = 5) received no intervention. The delayed group was also measured at Week 6 just before their intervention, and at Week 18. Grit scores in both intervention groups increased after the intervention, but the control group's did not. The delayed group increased in grit between Weeks 6 and 12, showing the effectiveness of the intervention over a relatively short time, and continued to improve to Week 18. Smoothness is a commonly used measure of motion control. Physiological motion is characterized by high smoothness in the upper limb workspace. Moreover, there is evidence that smoothness-based models describe effectively skilled motion planning. Typical smoothness measures are based on wrist kinematics. Despite smoothness being often used as a measure of motor control and to evaluate clinical pathologies, so far, a smoothness map is not available for the whole workspace of the upper limb. In this work, we provide a map of the upper limb workspace comparing four smoothness metrics: the normalized jerk, the speed metric, the spectral arc length, and the number of speed peaks. Fifteen subjects were enrolled, performing several reaching movements in the upper limb workspace in multiple directions in five planes (frontal, left, right, horizontal and up). Smoothness of the wrist of each movement was computed and a 3D workspace map was reconstructed. The four smoothness metrics were in general accordance. Lower smoothness was found in the less dexterous sectors (up and left sectors), with respect to the frontal, horizontal, and right sectors. The number of speed peaks, frequently used for evaluating motion in neurological diseases, was instead not suitable for assessing movements of healthy subjects. Lastly, strong correlation was found especially between the normalized jerk and speed metric. An electron-radiative-collisional (eRC) calculation model of physicochemical processes and radiative processes in strong shock waves in air at velocities of approximately 10 km/s is presented. The author’s calculation model for the velocities of electron excitation of diatomic molecules during their collisions with electrons and lifetimes of excited states based on using ab initio data for the Einstein coefficients is used. The electron temperature is predicted by solving the equation of conservation of energy of electrons. The present study aimed to synthesize thiophene carboxamide derivatives, which are considered biomimetics of the anticancer medication Combretastatin A-4 (CA-4), and compare the similarity in the polar surface area (PSA) between the novel series and CA-4. Our results showed that the PSA of the most synthesized structures was biomimetic to CA-4, and similar chemical and biological properties were observed against Hep3B cancer cell line. Among the synthesized series 2b and 2e compounds were the most active molecules on Hep3B (IC50 = 5.46 and 12.58 µM, respectively). The 3D results revealed that both 2b and 2e structures confuse the surface of Hep3B cancer cell lines' spheroid formation and force these cells to aggregate into a globular-shaped spheroid. The 2b and 2e showed a comparable interaction pattern to that observed for CA-4 and colchicine within the tubulin-colchicine-binding pocket. The thiophene ring, due to holding a high aromaticity character, participated critically in that observed interaction profile and showed additional advanced interactions over CA-4. The 2b and 2e tubulin complexes showed optimal dynamics trajectories within a time scale of 100 ns at 300 K temperature, which asserts their high stability and compactness. The aim of this study was to explore whether intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) combined with a dynamic contrast–enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE–MRI) quantitative model can improve the ability to distinguish between benign and malignant BI-RADS 4 breast lesions. We enrolled 100 patients who underwent breast MRI at our institution and extracted the quantitative parameters of lesions with a post-processing workstation. Statistical differences in these parameters between benign and malignant BI-RADS 4 lesions were assessed using a two independent samples t-test or a Mann–Whitney U test. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to establish five diagnostic models (model_ADC, model_IVIM, model_DCE, model_DCE+ADC, and model_DCE+IVIM). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, leave-one-out cross-validation, and the Delong test were used to assess and compare the diagnostic performance of these models. The model_DCE+IVIM showed the highest area under the curve (AUC) of 0.903 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.828–0.953, sensitivity: 87.50%, specificity: 85.00%), which was significantly higher than that of model_ADC (p = 0.014) and model_IVIM (p = 0.033). The model_ADC had the lowest diagnostic performance (AUC = 0.768, 95%CI: 0.672–0.846) but was not significantly different from model_IVIM (p = 0.168). The united quantitative model with DCE–MRI and IVIM could improve the ability to evaluate the malignancy in BI-RADS 4 lesions, and unnecessary breast biopsies may be obviated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cancer accounts for numerous deaths each year, and it is one of the most common causes of death worldwide, despite many breakthroughs in the discovery of novel anticancer candidates. Each new year the FDA approves the use of new drugs for cancer treatments. In the last years, the biological targets of anticancer agents have started to be clearer and one of these main targets is tubulin protein; this protein plays an essential role in cell division, as well as in intracellular transportation. The inhibition of microtubule formation by targeting tubulin protein induces cell death by apoptosis. In the last years, numerous novel structures were designed and synthesized to target tubulin, and this can be achieved by inhibiting the polymerization or depolymerization of the microtubules. In this review article, recent novel compounds that have antiproliferation activities against a panel of cancer cell lines that target tubulin are explored in detail. This review article emphasizes the recent developments of tubulin inhibitors, with insights into their antiproliferative and anti-tubulin activities. A full literature review shows that tubulin inhibitors are associated with properties in the inhibition of cancer cell line viability, inducing apoptosis, and good binding interaction with the colchicine binding site of tubulin. Furthermore, some drugs, such as cabazitaxel and fosbretabulin, have been approved by FDA in the last three years as tubulin inhibitors. Amidst the ongoing monkeypox outbreak, global awareness has been directed towards the prevention of viral transmission and case management, with the World Health Organization declaring the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. Monkeypox virus is one of several species in the Orthopoxvirus genus, with other species of the genus including the variola, cowpox, mousepox, camelpox, raccoonpox, skunkpox, and volepox viruses. Although the nomenclature of these species is based on the animal host from which they were originally isolated, transmission from animals to humans has been reported with several species. The progression of disease, following an incubation period, typically consists of a prodromal phase with systemic flu-like symptoms. Various organ systems may be affected in addition to the formation of pathognomonic skin lesions. As monkeypox poses a continued public health concern, the ophthalmic sequelae of monkeypox virus, especially those leading to vision loss, warrant consideration as well. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the ophthalmic implications of poxviruses in clinical and laboratory settings reported in the literature, as well as areas of unmet need and future research.
