In Alzheimer's disease (AD) differences are often reported between caregivers' and physicians' aims and evaluations. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of discrepancies between the evaluations of caregivers and physicians. Two hundred and eighteen caregivers of outpatients diagnosed with mild-to-moderate AD, referred to our Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Unit, entered the study. Caregiver burden was investigated using the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI) and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Caregiver Distress Scale (NPIDS). Caregivers were also administered a four-point scale to assess quantitatively whether their expectations in relation to the efficacy of the pharmacological treatment had been satisfied and a scale exploring clinical global impression of change. Caregivers whose expectations had not been satisfied had significantly higher CBI and NPIDS scores and a lower level of education; moreover, caregivers tended to overestimate the degree of cognitive decline during the course of the disease. These results underline the importance of correct and constant communication with AD patients and their families.

El inicio de la preparación de este libro se produjo hace unos 20 años, cuando los autores decidimos que era necesario contar con un manual para la identificación de plántulas de la Patagonia. Existe muy poca información acerca de las plántulas en general y, en particular, acerca de las que pueden encontrarse en esta región. El poder reconocer a qué especie corresponde una plántula es importante en muy diversas situaciones. Ya sea que la atención se centre en un campo cultivado, en un bosque en recuperación luego de un incendio, en un cantero de un jardín o en una maceta, la identificación de las plántulas que van emergiendo resulta útil como elemento precoz de proyección de la vegetación que poblará ese sitio. Este libro pretende contribuir con quienes se encuentren en situación de identificar plántulas en cualquiera de estas circunstancias. Para ellos proporcionamos claves para el reconocimiento e ilustraciones originales realizadas en tinta. No suministramos datos o imágenes acerca de los ejemplares adultos de las especies, pero no dudamos de que, a partir de los nombres comunes y latinos indicados, el lector pueda encontrar esa información en otros medios. Fifteen children presenting with a typical allergic rhinitis due to the pollens of Parietaria officinalis were investigated. Diagnosis was confirmed by history, physical examination, skin tests, radioallergosorbent test, and the nasal provocation test. Patients were separated into two groups: Ten received specific nasal immunotherapy and five were on placebo. Results were assessed on the following criteria: diminution of clinical symptomatology, reduction of the quantity of medication required to control symptoms, and results of provocation nasal tests, that showed an increase of the end point, which is the maximum tolerated dose. Compared to a placebo group, the ten children showed a significant improvement in all the cases without any side effects.

Medicare's End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Program makes renal replacement services accessible for, the majority of Americans with renal failure. National data from Medicare demonstrate complex and variable patterns of use of renal replacement services among US racial and ethnic groups. The black population has consistently suffered from a greater than 3.5-fold higher rate of treated ESRD than has the white population. The rates of hypertensioe, diabetic, and glomerulopathic ESRD are all substantially greater in blacks than in whites, and hypertension has accounted for a far greater proportion of ESRD in blacks than any other diagnosis. There is a paucity of national data on the occurrence of ESRD in Hispanic Americans. However, data from Texas strongly suggest that the incidence rate of treated ESRD is much higher in Mexican Americans than in non-Hispanic whites. Higher rates are apparent for each of the three most important causes of ESRD: hypertension, diabetes, and glomerulonephritis. Native Americans experience ESRD at a rate intermediate between those of whites and blacks, but their rate of diabetic ESRD is higher than in either blacks or whites. However, considerable diversity exists among Native American tribal groups. Significant barriers to the acquisition of preventive care have been identified, especially for blacks. While these barriers to preventive care are accompanied by a significantly impaired health status of the black American population, a specific causal relationship between impaired access to care for blacks and their predisposition to ESRD has not been established.

A karyological analysis of two species endemic to Northwestern Africa (Genista ifniensis A. Caballero and G. tricuspidata Desf.) showed that both species have the chromosome number 2n = 48. A comparison was also made with karyological data already available for the other taxa of sects. Scorpioides Spach and Voglera (Gaertn., Mey. & Schreb.) Spach.

Somatic chromosome counts were made for 13 plant species from Argentina, including: eight species of Poaceae, and one each for Asteraceae, Boraginaceae, Caesalpiniaceae, Mimosaceae, Solanaceae. For two species of Poaceae — Agrostis inconspicua Kunze ex E. Desv. (2n = 28) and Poa chonotica Phil. (2n = 42), the chromosome numbers are reported here for the first time. A new cytotype for Bothriochloa springfieldii (Gould) Parodi (2n = 60) is also reported. Deschampsia setacea (Hudson) Hackel is a slender grass described originally as Aira setacea Hudson on a plant collected in Stratton Strawless (Norfolk) in the first edition of the Flora Anglica. The Sierra de Famatina System is one of the main areas of endemism within the Southern Cone, as well as one of the main diversity hotspots of Argentina. We present here the first checklist for Sierra de Famatina, which includes 909 taxa (species, subspecies, varieties and forms) of vascular plants from 77 families and 358 genera. Sixty-eight are new records for La Rioja province and 28 are endemic species. Voucher specimens, locality information and distribution are given for each taxon, and a brief analysis of the diversity, phytogeography of the flora and the type specimens is presented. Illustrations of the important endemics and type specimens from Sierra de Famatina are provided. In teaching the physical sciences, a significant challenge lies in the student's tendency to consider the scientific world and the "real" world as separate. For example, Newton's 1st Law of Motion states that an object in motion remains in motion in a straight line unless acted on by an external force. However, our experience tells us that most objects keep moving only as long as someone or something pushes on them. One key to understanding physics is the ability to abstract the "law" from a reality which also includes friction and other effects. In this article we describe a college course for non-science majors, The Physics of Dance. The central theme of this course is the personalization of the physics of motion by making each student the object. With this approach we give students not only scientific tools to measure and understand but personal involvement to experience forces and motion. The circumscription and phylogeny of Deschampsia were studied for the first time by parsimony analysis of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid trnL intron sequences. The traditional sectional division based on morphology was not supported by sequence data, which showed differences between core Deschampsia s.str. (mainly represented by D. cespitosa), D. atropurpurea and D. flexuosa. Differences in the ITS marker included insertions in the sequence of D. atropurpurea; the trnL marker contained a deletion shared by all Deschampsia sequences, excluding D. atropurpurea and D. flexuosa, and an insertion in D. flexuosa. ITS sequences also differed in an insertion shared by Northern Hemisphere accessions. Both markers produced similar tree topologies but D. klossi, in spite of being morphologically close to Deschampsia s.str., fell with D. flexuosa outside the core of the genus in the trnL tree. Molecular evidence corroborates morphological and cytological data supporting exclusion of D. atropurpurea and D. flexuosa from Deschampsia and their treatment as separate genera. A morphometric and karyological study of several populations of Genista sericea , a northern Illyrian amphiadriatic species, with a disjunct distributional area centered on Pollino Massif (southern Italy), has been undertaken, based on herbarium specimens and field research. Morphometric analysis allowed to individuate three distinct groups of populations which are here attributed to three taxa at subspecific level. One of them is here newly described: G. sericea subsp. pollinensis , endemic to northern Calabria in Pollino and neighbouring areas of Basilicata. The taxonomic status of G. sericea var. rigida was re-evaluated and a name of a new rank is proposed: G. sericea subsp. rigida (occurring in southern Illyria), while subsp. sericea is a southeastern Alpine northern Illyrian taxon. The names G. sericea and G. sericea var. rigida are lectotypified. Karyologically, all the taxa are characterized by the same somatic number 2n = 48, sometimes with B chromosomes (up to four).

To know the mechanisms involved in the activation of promutagenic aromatic amines mediated by plants, we used Persea americana S117 system (S117) for the activation of 2-aminofluorene (2-AF) and m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA) in Ames assays. In these assays, the effect of the diphenylene iodonium (DPI), an inhibitor of flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs), of the 1-aminobenzotriazole (1-ABT), an inhibitor of cytochromes P450 (cyt-P450s) and of the methimazole, a high-affinity substrate for FMOs, was studied. The efficacy of both inhibitors and of the methimazole was verified to find that they did partially inhibit the mutagenesis of both aromatic amines, activated with rat liver S9. Similarly, both inhibitors and methimazole did produce a significant decrease in 2-AF and m-PDA mutagenesis, when the activation system was S117, indicating that, similar to what occurs in mammalian systems, plant FMOs and cyt-P450s can metabolize aromatic amines to mutagenic product(s). However, the affinity of both FMOs and cyt-P450s of plant for 2-AF and m-PDA was different. Data obtained indicate that the activities of plant FMOs must be the main enzymatic system of m-PDA activation while, in 2-AF activation, plant cyt-P450s have the most relevant activities. In addition, peroxidases of the S117 system must contribute to 2-AF activation and some isoforms of FMOs and/or cyt-P450s of the S117 system, uninhibited by the inhibitors used, must be the responsible for a partial activation of m-PDA.

Pollen cards of the taxa of the Genista radiata group [ G. radiata (L.) Scop. var. radiata, G. radiata var. sericopetala Buchegger, G. holopetala (Koch) Bald., G. hassertiana (Bald.) Buchegger] are presented. The acetolyzed pollen was observed by light and scanning electron microscope.
