274. Wide-angle wideband frequency-independent beam-scanning leaky wave antenna

Abstract

© 2019 IEEE. Frequency-independent beam scanning leaky-wave antennas (LWAs) that can operate over a specific frequency band are highly desirable for future wireless systems. A composite right/left-handed (CRLH) LWA is developed in this paper that facilitates these functionalities. It utilizes two groups of varactor diodes to realize the frequency-independent beam scanning capability. The optimized reconfigurable CRLH LWA and its simple DC biasing network achieves a simulated frequency-independent beam that scans over 100° at each frequency point between 4.75 and 5.25 GHz. An antenna prototype was fabricated and tested. The measured results at 5.0 GHz confirm its simulated performance characteristics.

Abstract

Time-resolved optical spin orientation spectroscopy was employed to investigate the temperaturedependent electron spin injection in In0.1Ga0.9As quantum well (QW) and In0.5Ga0.5As quantum dots (QDs) tunnel-coupled nanostructures with 4, 6, and 8 nm-thick GaAs barriers. The fast picosecond-ranged spin injection from QW to QD excited states (ES) was observed to speed up with temperature, as induced by pronounced longitudinal-optical (LO)-phonon-involved multiple scattering process, which contributes to a thermally stable and almost fully spin-conserving injection within 5-180 K. The LO-phonon coupling was also found to cause accelerated electron spin relaxation of QD ES at elevated temperature, mainly via hyperfine interaction with random nuclear field. Abstract

For the design of the satellite antenna for the future geostationary (GEO) satellite communication or DBS (direct broadcasting satellite) applications to serve the Taiwan Island region, it may be required to have a antenna beam which effectively covers the Taiwan region and reduces the antenna radiation level in the nearby area of mainland China. Two cases of the Ka-band (20 GHz) satellite antenna, a shaped offset reflector antenna to synthesize a contoured beam and an elliptical offset reflector antenna to generate an elliptical beam, have been studied. This paper presents the comparison and discussion of the antenna coverage performance of the two designs.

Abstract

The land use changes (LUC) have altered the vegetation net primary productivity (NPP). Human appropriation of net primary productivity resulting from LUC (HANPPluc) can be used to quantify the consequence of LUC on vegetation NPP. HANPPluc is defined as the difference between the potential and actual NPP availability in ecosystems. Based on the Thornthwaite Memorial model, CASA model, and multiple linear regression, this paper estimated the potential and actual NPP, explored the temporal and spatial changes of HANPPluc, and analyzed the impact of LUC on vegetation NPP in Anji, China. There was a significant increasing trend in annual HANPPluc from 1984 to 2014. The total mean value of HANPPluc was 155 Gg C year-1, while HANPPluc per unit was 82 ± 54 g C m-2 year-1 . The growth of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) forests area caused an increase of 33.5 Gg C year-1 in NPP. However, the urbanization was the main reason for the decrease of NPP, which resulted in a decrease of 97.9 Gg C year-1 in NPP. This study quantified the impact of LUC on vegetation NPP, and provided key data for urban landscape planning, Moso bamboo management, and regional ecological carbon cycle models. Abstract

We propose the use of germanium-on-silicon technology for indirect time-of-flight based three-dimensional sensing, and demonstrate a novel lock-in pixel featuring high quantum efficiency and large frequency bandwidth. Compared to silicon pixels, germanium-on-silicon pixels simultaneously maintain a high quantum efficiency and a high demodulation contrast deep into GHz frequency regime, which enable consistently superior depth accuracy in both indoor and outdoor scenarios. Physical model, numerical simulation, device fabrication and characterization, system performance comparison, and laser safety analysis are presented. Our work paves a new path to high-performance time-of-flight rangers and imagers, as well as potential adoption of lasers operated at a longer near infrared wavelength that falls outside of the operation window of silicon pixels.

Abstract

The successful operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the excellent performance of the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE detectors in Run-1 and Run-2 with $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV as well as the giant leap in precision calculations and modeling of fundamental interactions at hadron colliders have allowed an extraordinary breadth of physics studies including precision measurements of a variety physics processes. The LHC results have so far confirmed the validity of the Standard Model of particle physics up to unprecedented energy scales and with great precision in the sectors of strong and electroweak interactions as well as flavour physics, for instance in top quark physics. The upgrade of the LHC to a High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC) at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy with 3 ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity will probe the Standard Model with even greater precision and will extend the sensitivity to possible anomalies in the Standard Model, thanks to a ten-fold larger data set, upgraded detectors and expected improvements in the theoretical understanding. This document summarises the physics reach of the HL-LHC in the realm of strong and electroweak interactions and top quark physics, and provides a glimpse of the potential of a possible further upgrade of the LHC to a 27 TeV $pp$ collider, the High-Energy LHC (HE-LHC), assumed to accumulate an integrated luminosity of 15 ab$^{-1}$.
