251. Multi-task Federated Learning for Heterogeneous Pancreas Segmentation

Abstract: Federated learning (FL) for medical image segmentation becomes more challenging in multi-task settings where clients might have different categories of labels represented in their data. For example, one client might have patient data with "healthy'' pancreases only while datasets from other clients may contain cases with pancreatic tumors. The vanilla federated averaging algorithm makes it possible to obtain more generalizable deep learning-based segmentation models representing the training data from multiple institutions without centralizing datasets. However, it might be sub-optimal for the aforementioned multi-task scenarios. 252. BMS charges without supertranslation ambiguity

Abstract: The asymptotic symmetry of an isolated gravitating system, or the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group, contains an infinite-dimensional subgroup of supertranslations. Despite decades of study, the difficulties with the "supertranslation ambiguity" persisted in making sense of fundamental notions such as the angular momentum carried away by gravitational radiation. The issues of angular momentum and center of mass were resolved by the authors recently. In this paper, we address the issues for conserved charges with respect to both the classical BMS algebra and the extended BMS algebra. In particular, supertranslation ambiguity of the classical charge for the BMS algebra, as well as the extended BMS algebra, is completely identified. We then propose a new invariant charge by adding correction terms to the classical charge. With the presence of these correction terms, the new invariant charge is then shown to be free from any supertranslation ambiguity. Finally, we prove that both the classical and invariant charges for the extended BMS algebra are invariant under the boost transformations., Comment: 41 pages

Abstract: JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day, therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures

254. Optimal Construction for Time-Convex Hull with Two Orthogonal Highways in the L1-metric

Abstract: We consider the time-convex hull problem in the presence of two orthogonal highways H. In this problem, the travelling speed on the highway is faster than off the highway, and the time-convex hull of a point set P is the closure of P with respect to the inclusion of shortest time-paths. In this paper, we provide the algorithm for constructing the time-convex hull with two orthogonal highways. We reach the optimal result of O(n log n) time for arbitrary highway speed in the L1-metric. For the L2-metric with infinite highway speed, we hit the goal of O(n log n) time as well.

255. Learning to Compensate: A Deep Neural Network Framework for 5G Power Amplifier Compensation

Abstract: Owing to the complicated characteristics of 5G communication system, designing RF components through mathematical modeling becomes a challenging obstacle. Moreover, such mathematical models need numerous manual adjustments for various specification requirements. In this paper, we present a learning-based framework to model and compensate Power Amplifiers (PAs) in 5G communication. In the proposed framework, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are used to learn the characteristics of the PAs, while, correspondent Digital Pre-Distortions (DPDs) are also learned to compensate for the nonlinear and memory effects of PAs. On top of the framework, we further propose two frequency domain losses to guide the learning process to better optimize the target, compared to naive time domain Mean Square Error (MSE). The proposed framework serves as a drop-in replacement for the conventional approach. The proposed approach achieves an average of 56.7% reduction of nonlinear and memory effects, which converts to an average of 16.3% improvement over a carefully-designed mathematical model, and even reaches 34% enhancement in severe distortion scenarios., Comment: IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2021

257. Deep learning for detecting pulmonary tuberculosis via chest radiography: an international study across 10 countries

Abstract: Tuberculosis (TB) is a top-10 cause of death worldwide. Though the WHO recommends chest radiographs (CXRs) for TB screening, the limited availability of CXR interpretation is a barrier. We trained a deep learning system (DLS) to detect active pulmonary TB using CXRs from 9 countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe, and utilized large-scale CXR pretraining, attention pooling, and noisy student semi-supervised learning. Evaluation was on (1) a combined test set spanning China, India, US, and Zambia, and (2) an independent mining population in South Africa. Given WHO targets of 90% sensitivity and 70% specificity, the DLS's operating point was prespecified to favor sensitivity over specificity. On the combined test set, the DLS's ROC curve was above all 9 India-based radiologists, with an AUC of 0.90 (95%CI 0.87-0.92). The DLS's sensitivity (88%) was higher than the India-based radiologists (75% mean sensitivity), p<0.001 for superiority; and its specificity (79%) was non-inferior to the radiologists (84% mean specificity), p=0.004. Similar trends were observed within HIV positive and sputum smear positive sub-groups, and in the South Africa test set. We found that 5 US-based radiologists (where TB isn't endemic) were more sensitive and less specific than the India-based radiologists (where TB is endemic). The DLS also remained non-inferior to the US-based radiologists. In simulations, using the DLS as a prioritization tool for confirmatory testing reduced the cost per positive case detected by 40-80% compared to using confirmatory testing alone. To conclude, our DLS generalized to 5 countries, and merits prospective evaluation to assist cost-effective screening efforts in radiologist-limited settings. Operating point flexibility may permit customization of the DLS to account for site-specific factors such as TB prevalence, demographics, clinical resources, and customary practice patterns.

258. MoSES_2PDF: A GIS-Compatible GPU-accelerated High-Performance Simulation Tool for Grain-Fluid Shallow Flows

Abstract: We introduce a GPU-accelerated simulation tool, named Modeling on Shallow Flows with Efficient Simulation for Two-Phase Debris Flows (MoSES_2PDF), of which the input and output data can be linked to the GIS system for engineering application. MoSES_2PDF is developed based on the CUDA structure so that it can well run with different NVIDIA GPU cards, once the CUDA vers. 9.2 (or higher) is installed. The performance of the MoSES_2PDF is evaluated, and it is found that the present GPU-CUDA implementation can enhance efficiency by up to 230 folds, depending on the PC/workstations, models of GPU card, and the mesh numbers in the computation domain. Two numerical examples are illustrated with two distinct initial inflow conditions, which are included in two modes of MoSES_2PDF, respectively. In the numerical example of a large-scale event, the 2009 Hsiaolin event, the results computed by two distinct NVIDIA GPU cards (RTX-2080-Ti and Tesla-V100) are found to be identical but only tiny deviation is figured out in comparison with the results computed by the conventional single-core CPU-code. It is speculated to be caused by the different structures in the source codes and some float/double operations. In addition to the illustration in the GIS system, the computed results by MoSES\_2PDF can also be shown with animated 3D graphics in the ANSI-Platform, where the user can interact with 3D scenes. Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton LS detector at 700-m underground. An excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume offer exciting opportunities for addressing many important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With 6 years of data, the neutrino mass ordering can be determined at 3-4 sigma and three oscillation parameters can be measured to a precision of 0.6% or better by detecting reactor antineutrinos. With 10 years of data, DSNB could be observed at 3-sigma; a lower limit of the proton lifetime of 8.34e33 years (90% C.L.) can be set by searching for p->nu_bar K^+; detection of solar neutrinos would shed new light on the solar metallicity problem and examine the vacuum-matter transition region. A core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 IBD and ~2000 (300) all-flavor neutrino-proton (electron) scattering events. Geo-neutrinos can be detected with a rate of ~400 events/year. We also summarize the final design of the JUNO detector and the key R&D achievements. All 20-inch PMTs have been tested. The average photon detection efficiency is 28.9% for the 15,000 MCP PMTs and 28.1% for the 5,000 dynode PMTs, higher than the JUNO requirement of 27%. Together with the >20 m attenuation length of LS, we expect a yield of 1345 p.e. per MeV and an effective energy resolution of 3.02%/\sqrt{E (MeV)}$ in simulations. The underwater electronics is designed to have a loss rate <0.5% in 6 years. With degassing membranes and a micro-bubble system, the radon concentration in the 35-kton water pool could be lowered to <10 mBq/m^3. Acrylic panels of radiopurity <0.5 ppt U/Th are produced. The 20-kton LS will be purified onsite. Singles in the fiducial volume can be controlled to ~10 Hz. The JUNO experiment also features a double calorimeter system with 25,600 3-inch PMTs, a LS testing facility OSIRIS, and a near detector TAO., Comment: A review paper with 78 pages and 32 figures. v2: minor revision. Abstract: The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator fillling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $10^{-16}$ g/g of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th requires a large ($\sim$20 m$^3$) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup., Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures

Abstract: Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3'' PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown promise for diagnosing prostate cancer in biopsies. However, results have been limited to individual studies, lacking validation in multinational settings. Competitions have been shown to be accelerators for medical imaging innovations, but their impact is hindered by lack of reproducibility and independent validation. With this in mind, we organized the PANDA challenge-the largest histopathology competition to date, joined by 1,290 developers-to catalyze development of reproducible AI algorithms for Gleason grading using 10,616 digitized prostate biopsies. We validated that a diverse set of submitted algorithms reached pathologist-level performance on independent cross-continental cohorts, fully blinded to the algorithm developers. On United States and European external validation sets, the algorithms achieved agreements of 0.862 (quadratically weighted κ, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.840-0.884) and 0.868 (95% CI, 0.835-0.900) with expert uropathologists. Successful generalization across different patient populations, laboratories and reference standards, achieved by a variety of algorithmic approaches, warrants evaluating AI-based Gleason grading in prospective clinical trials.

Abstract: Nanoparticles are widely used in biomedical applications and cancer treatments due to their minute scale, multi-function, and long retention time. Among the various nanoparticles, the unique optical property derived from the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic nanoparticles is a primary reason that metallic nanoparticles are researched and applied. Copper and Iron nanoparticles have the potential to generate hydroxyl radicals in excess H2O2 via Fenton or Fenton-like reactions. On the other hand, gold nanoparticles equipped with a photosensitizer can transfer the energy of photons to chemical energy and enhance the production of singlet oxygen, which is suitable for cancer treatment. With the actions of these two reactive oxygen species in the tumor microenvironment, cell apoptosis can further be induced. In this work, we first synthesized dual metal nanoparticles with poly[styrene-alt-(maleic acid, sodium salt)(Cu ferrite oxide-polymer) by a simple one-step hydrothermal reduction reaction. Then, gold(III) was reduced and doped into the structure, which formed a triple metal structure, Au-doped Cu ferrite nanoparticles (Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer NPs). The metal ratio of the product could be controlled by manipulating the Fe/Cu ratio of reactants and the sequence of addition of reactants. The core-shell structure was verified by transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen generation ability of Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer was proved. The chemodynamic and photodynamic effect was measured, and the in vitro ROS generation was observed. Furthermore, the behavior of endocytosis by cancer cells could be controlled by the magnetic field. The result indicated that Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer core-shell nanoreactor is a potential agent for chemodynamic/photodynamic synergetic therapy.

Abstract: The major biological methyl donor, S-adenosylmethionine (adoMet) synthesis occurs mainly in the liver. Methionine adenosyltransferase 1A (MAT1A) and glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT) are two key enzymes involved in the functional implications of that variation. We collected 42 RNA-seq data from paired hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its adjacent normal liver tissue from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). There was no mutation found in MAT1A or GNMT RNA in the 42 HCC patients. The 11,799 genes were annotated in the RNA-Seq data, and their expression levels were used to investigate the phenotypes of low MAT1A and low GNMT by Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). The REACTOME_TRANSLATION gene set was enriched and visualized in a heatmap along with corresponding differences in gene expression between low MAT1A versus high MAT1A and low GNMT versus high GNMT. We identified 43 genes of the REACTOME_TRANSLATION gene set that are powerful prognosis factors in HCC. The significantly predicted genes were referred into eukaryotic translation initiation (EIF3B, EIF3K), eukaryotic translation elongation (EEF1D), and ribosomal proteins (RPs). Cell models expressing various MAT1A and GNMT proved that simultaneous restoring the expression of MAT1A and GNMT decreased cell proliferation, invasion, as well as the REACTOME_TRANSLATION gene EEF1D, consistent with a better prognosis in human HCC. We demonstrated new findings that downregulation or defect in MAT1A and GNMT genes can enrich the protein-associated translation process that may account for poor HCC prognosis. This is the first study demonstrated that MAT1A and GNMT, the 2 key enzymes involved in methionine cycle, could attenuate the function of ribosome translation. We propose a potential novel mechanism by which the diminished GNMT and MAT1A expression may confer poor prognosis for HCC.

266. The Interplay between English Proficiency and Reading Strategy Use in English Reading: Validating the Linguistic Threshold Hypothesis and the Interactive-Compensatory Model

Abstract: The present study attempted to validate the linguistic threshold hypothesis (LTH) and the interactive-compensatory model (ICM) in an English as a foreign language (EFL) setting by assessing the relative contributions of English proficiency and reading strategy use to English reading and examining the mutual compensation between these two factors in English reading, respectively. To this end, 166 (55 males, 111 females) EFL freshmen enrolled in General English I at a university in southern Taiwan satisfactorily completed three measurements to respectively assess their English proficiency (vocabulary and grammar knowledge), English reading comprehension, and reading strategy use (bottom-up and top-down strategies). The findings support the LTH by showing that English proficiency was a stronger predictor of English reading comprehension than reading strategy use and that the high proficient learners employed more reading strategies and used them more effectively in English reading than the low proficient learners. Furthermore, the findings verify the ICM by specifying the actual levels at which intermediate English proficiency compensated for low reading strategy use, and high reading strategy use compensated for low English proficiency for successful English reading. The present study concludes with the suggestion that linguistic knowledge should be taught to EFL learners simultaneously along with reading strategy use for the best performance in English reading comprehension.

The present study aimed to investigate the patterns of exposure to cyber IPV perpetration and victimization types, related risk factors (i.e., adverse experiences during childhood) and mental health correlates among Hispanic emerging adults. Method A three-step latent class analysis was performed in a sample of 1,113 Hispanic emerging adults in the age range 18 to 29 years (M = 20.53 years, SD = 2.47). Results A five-class solution was found to be optimal, and the latent classes were labeled as low cyber, cyberstalking IPV, cyber psychological IPV, cyberstalking and psychological IPV, and high cyber IPV victimization and perpetration. Individuals with higher mean scores on childhood maltreatment and witnessing parental violence were more likely to be in the class with higher probabilities of cyber IPV victimization and perpetration. Furthermore, those in the cyber IPV victimization and perpetration class had higher means on symptoms of depression and alcohol use. Conclusions Latent classes showed bidirectional cyber IPV with varying probabilities of exposure to victimization and perpetration. Findings are in line with the cumulative risk hypothesis as results showed that exposure to multiple traumatic childhood experiences and cyber IPV accumulate and have a detrimental effect on the mental health correlates. Intervention and preventative strategies should address the impact of hazardous use of technology on intimate relationships and mental health correlates.

Abstract: 26,000 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) have been produced for Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) by the Hainan Zhanchuang Photonics Technology Co., Ltd (HZC) company in China and passed all acceptance tests with only 15 tubes rejected. The mass production began in 2018 and elapsed for about 2 years at a rate of $\sim$1,000~PMTs per month. The characterization of the PMTs was performed in the factory concurrently with production as a joint effort between HZC and JUNO. Fifteen performance parameters were tracked at different sampling rates, and novel working strategies were implemented to improve quality assurance. This constitutes the largest sample of 3-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date.

Abstract: LIGO's successful detection of gravitational waves has revitalized the theoretical understanding of the angular momentum carried away by gravitational radiation. An infinite dimensional supertranslation ambiguity has presented an essential difficulty for decades of study. Recent advances were made to address and quantify the supertranslation ambiguity in the context of compact binary coalescence. Here we present the first definition of angular momentum in general relativity that is completely free from supertranslation ambiguity. The new definition was derived from the limit of the quasilocal angular momentum defined previously by the authors. A new definition of center of mass at null infinity is also proposed and shown to be supertranslation invariant. Together with the classical Bondi-Sachs energy-momentum, they form a complete set of conserved quantities at null infinity that transform according to basic physical laws., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure
