Neste trabalho é apresentado o Método de Diferenças Finitas Geralizadas (MDFG), como uma alternativa de método meshless para solucionar equações diferenciais parciais. Este método está baseado na aproximação local por mínimos quadrados a partir de nós espalhados sobre o domínio. E proposto um critério de seleção dos nós utilizados na aproximação, garantindo que o erro de truncamento gerado pelo MDFG é baixo. Demonstra-se teoricamente a convergência do método em certos problemas elípticos e parabólicos, e alguns exemplos são apresentados para comprovar este fato. A aplicação do método na solução de EDP em domínios de alta complexidade é mostrada num exemplo de escoamento de fluido numa artéria. A Generalized Finite-Difference Method (GFDM) is proposed in this work as a new meshless method to solve partial differential equations. The method is based on moving least square approximations of an arrangement of nodes distributed in a domain. The convergence of some elliptic and parabolic problems is theoretically prove and examples are also presented. The flexibility of ability GFDM to solving PDE in complex domains is ilustrated though the simulation of the blood flow into an artery.

Neste trabalho, uma nova técnica de reconstrução tridimensional é apresentada. Esta técnica oferece uma família de modelos, governada por um parâmetro chamado β, e que pode ser obtida a partir de um mesmo conjunto de seções planares. Este fato faz possível múltiplas opções para o problema da correspondência, tarefa difícil de ser realizada por outros métodos de reconstrução. Além da flexibilidade na conexão entre regiões de níveis consecutivos, o algoritmo produz LP-variedades e respeita a condição de reexemplificação. In this work a new three-dimensional reconstruction technique is presented. This technique offers a family of modeis, governed by a parameter denoted β, that can be obtained from a sarne set of cross sections. This fact makes possible multiples choices for the correspondence problem, a difficult task to be performed by other reconstruction methods. Besides the fiexibility in the connection among regions of the adjacent slices, the algorithm produces PL-manifolds and respects the re-sampling condition.

O presente trabalho aborda a importante questão da codificação de curvatura por redes neurais biológicas, partindo da hipótese que a curvatura ao longo de uma curva bidimensional pode ser calculada por meio de operadores diferenciais bidimensionais biologicamente plausíveis. O modelo proposto para estimativa de curvatura e orientação incorpora algumas propriedades eletrofisiológicas inerentes aos neurônios e outras características de redes neurais biológicas, como a distribuição aleatória de neurônios na rede. As influências da morfologia dos neurônios na estimativa de curvatura e orientação são investigadas e discutidas. A fundamentação biológica do modelo é discutida e os resultados das simulações são apresentados em uma seqüência crescente de plausibilidade biológica e sofisticação. O modelo foi testado com neurônios naturais e artificiais e os resultados sugerem que neurônios com área de influência maior, com processos dendríticos lineares na direção radial, e processos dendríticos distribuídos radialmente de forma simétrica são melhores na estimativa de curvatura e orientação. São também apresentadas algumas medidas de neuromorfometria desenvolvidas, como o histograma de influência, que avalia a área de influência ou cobertura espacial de neurônios bidimensionais e tridimensionais, assim como uma extensão do conceito de cobertura espacial para expressar as influências vetoriais bidimensionais e tridimensionais. Ainda no contexto de neuromorfometria, apresentamos um mecanismo para extração de medidas de neurônios bidimensionais e tridimensionais codificados no padrão Eutectic para a posterior geração de neurônios artificiais estatisticamente semelhantes aos neurônios naturais The present work deals with the important question about curvature codification by biological neuronal networks, based at the assumption that the curvature along the bidimensional curve can be calculated through biologically plausible bidimensional differential operators. The proposed model for curvature and orientation estimation incorporate some electrophysiological properties inherent to neurons and other biological neural network features like random distribution of the neurons. The neuronal morphological influences in the curvature and orientation estimation are investigated and discussed. The biological foundation of the model is discussed and the results of the simulations are presented in a growth sequence of the biological plausibility and sophistication. The model was tested with natural and artificial neurons and the results suggest that neurons with the large influence area, with linear dendrictic processes in the radial direction, and dendrictic process distributed radially in the symmetrical form are better in the curvature and orientation estimation. Some neuromorphometric measures developed are presented like influence histograms that evaluate the influence area or spatial coverage of bidimensional and tridimensional neurons. Also, is presented an extension of the spatial coverage concept to express the bidimensional and tridimensional vetorial influences. Further in the neuromorphometric context we present a mechanism to extract the bidimensional and tridimensional neuronal measures coded in Eutectic to later generation of the artificial neurons statistically similar to the natural neurons

Este trabalho envolve estudos na área de Modelagem Geométrica, e descreve a implementação de um Modelador de Superflcies Implicitas em R3. Esse modelador tem objetivo de anyiliar o grupo de Mecânica de Fluidos Computacional do ICMC na definição de domínios complexos para realização de simulações de escoamentos de fluidos. O Modelador utiliza a técnica de Modelagem Implicita. Um modelo é definido por uma árvore CSG (Constructive Solid Geometty). As primitivas que podem constituir essa árvore são: primitivas pré-definidas como esfera, cilindros, etc. , e. primitivas baseadas em esqueletos definidos por pontos, segmentos de reta ou poligonos planares. O Modelador é constituído por três componentes: a Interface de Modelagem, responsável pela definição da árvore CSG que representa o modelo implícito; o Poligonalizador, que transforma o modelo implícito em uma malha de polígonos; e o Visnalizador que apresenta essa malha de polígonos. This work involves studies in the topics of Geometric Modeling, and it describes the development of an Implicit Sutface Modeler. The Modeler has the objective of aiding the ICMC group of Computational Fluid Mechanics in the deftnition of complex dotnains for nutnetical simulations of fluid flows. The Modeler system uses implicit Modeling technique. A model is defined by a constructive solid geometry tree (CSG). Two types of primitives can be used to build the tree: pre-defined primitives, the sphere, cylinder, etc., and primitives defined by skeletons, eithet points, une segments, or planar polygons. The Modeler is constituted by three components: the Modeling Interface for deftnition of CSG tree that represents implicit model Poligonizer for transformation of the implicit model in a mesh of polygons; and Visuali7ator, forni the presentation the polygonal mesh resulting of poligonization.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) O Staphylococcus aureus resistente a oxacilina (ORSA) e um dos principais agentes das infeccoes hospitalares em nosso meio. No Hospital São Paulo o ORSA e endemico, representando cerca de 65 por cento das cepas de S. aureus isoladas, ocasionando morbidade, mortalidade e custos consideraveis. O controle da disseminacao dessa bacteria nos hospitais exige a adocao de medidas especificas. Este estudo teve como objetivo medir o custo-efetividade de uma intervencao para prevenir a ocorrencia de infeccoes por ORSA na unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI) da disciplina de anestesiologia do Hospital São Paulo. A intervencao consistiu de um pacote de medidas educativas para os profissionais da UTI, culturas de vigilancia atraves de swab da narina anterior dos pacientes e profissionais, erradicacao do ORSA nasal com mupirocina e precaucao de contato para os pacientes colonizados e infectados. Desenho do estudo: estudo longitudinal com avaliacao pre e pos. Indicadores de infeccao por ORSA e custos foram avaliados no periodo de 01 de junho a 31 outubro de 1996 (periodo controle) e de 01 de novembro de 96 a 31 de outubro de 1997 (periodo intervencao). Apenas os custos diretos da intervencao (culturas de vigilancia de pacientes e profissionais da UTI, tratamento dos pacientes e profissionais colonizados, aulas expositivas) e os custos diretos da internacao dos pacientes (diaria hospitalar, antimicrobianos, nutricao parenteral, procedimentos invasivos, cirurgias, exames bioquimicas, hematologicos, microbiologicos e radiologicos) foram considerados. Foram definidos como parametros de efetividade a incidencia das infeccoes e bacteremias por ORSA, a permanencia n UTI e a letalidade relacionada ao ORSA. Foram incluidos 138 pacientes n periodo controle e 245 pacientes no periodo intervencao. A densidade d incidencia das infeccoes por ORSA caiu de 10,24/1000 para 5,411000 pacientes dia durante a intervencao (p = O,04; Cl95 por cento 1,00-3,55). A densidade de incidencia das bacteremias primarias reduziu de 3,63/1000 para O,9111000 cateter-dia (p O,06; Ci95 por cento O,9-16,0). A permanencia na UTI da populacao estuda foi maior n periodo intervencao em razao do maior numero de pacientes com indicadores d gravidade nesse periodo. A media de permanencia dos pacientes que nao infectaram foi de 6,0 dias, enquanto a permanencia dos pacientes que desenvolveram bacteremia e infeccao por ORSA foram 18,5 e 34,0 dia respectivamente (p < O,001)...(au) The oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ORSA) is one of the main organisms involved in nosocomial infection. ORSA is endemic at Hospital São Paulo. It represents approximately 65% of the isolated S. aureus and accounts for considerable morbidity, mortality and costs. To control the dissemination of S aureus at hospital setting, specific measures should be undertaken. The objective of this study was to assess the costeffectiveness of an intervention to prevent infection caused by ORSA at intensive care unit (ICU) of the anesthesiology sector of the Hospital São Paulo. The intervention consisted of an educational package offered to ICU medical and paramedical staff, together with surveillance cultures of the secretion of the anterior nares of patients and health care workers (HCW) aiming at identifying ORSA-positive individuals. Eradication of those found colonized were attempted through nasal mupirocin and contact precaution observed to colonized or infected patients. Design of the study: before-and-after study. ORSA indicators and costs were evaluated in the period of June 1st to October 31st 1996 (control period) and compared with the period of November 1st to October 31st 1997 (intervention period). Only direct costs incurred by control measures and costs derived from hospital stays (antibiotics, invasive procedures, surgeries, blood tests, cultures, radiologic tests and hospital fees) were considered. The incidence of infections and bacteremias due to ORSA, length of stay and mortality were used as outcome measures of effectiveness. A total of 138 patients were enrolled in the control period and 245 patients in the intervention period. The incidence of ORSA infections decreased from 10.24/1000 to 5.4/1000 patient-days ( = 0.04; CI95% 1.00-3.55). Primary bloodstream ORSA infections also decreased from 3.63/1000 to 0.91/1000 central line-days ( = 0.06; CI95% 0.9-16). There were significantly more severe cases during the intervention period, which translated in a longer length of stay at the ICU. The mean number of days at the ICU for the patients with no infection was 6.5 days, whereas the mean length of stay of patients who developed ORSA bacteremia and ORSA infection were 18.5 days and 34.0 days, respectively (p < 0.001). Mortality attributed to ORSA in the first 14 days of onset of infection was the same in both periods. Nasal colonization by ORSA was seen in 31% of the patients and 53% of these patients presented with colonization at ICU admission. The length of stay was longer for colonized patients (28.7 days) than for patients who were not colonized (7.6 days) (p < 0.001). In regard to nasal colonization by ORSA of the ICU HCW, 12.2% of them were shown to be colonized during the study of which 94.4% were nurses. Intranasal mupirocin bid for 5 days was used in colonized patients and HCW. Eradication rates in 81.25% of the patients and in 88.2% of the HCW ensued after mupirocin. Despite favorable eradication rates following nasal mupirocin, the estimated transmission rate per day of ORSA at the ICU did not change with the intervention due to the high proportion of patients already colonized at the ICU admission. The estimated extra length of stays at the ICU were 16 days and 12.6 days, respectively due ORSA infection and bacteremia. The mean total cost of a patient with ORSA infection was R$ 20,799.19 considerably higher than the cost of a patient without ORSA infection. The estimated extra cost attributable to an ORSA infection was R$ 11,843.52. The additional cost to prevent an ORSA infection in 1,000 patient-days was R$ 917.13. This amount represents the cost-effectiveness ratio of the proposed intervention. The adoption of specific strategies to prevent and control ORSA infection at the ICU setting seems warranted based on the result of this cost-effectiveness analysis. BV UNIFESP: Teses e dissertações

Este trabalho apresenta um ambiente integrado para simulação de escoamentos bidimensionais incompressíveis com superfícies livres, denominado Freeflow-2D. Este sistema é compostos por quatro módulos: um modelador de moldes e escoamentos - Modflow- 2D, um simulador de escoamentos - Simflow-2D, um visualizador de escoamentos - Visflow- 2D e um reiniciador de escoamentos - Resimflow-2D. A comunicação entre os módulos do sistema é feita por arquivos. O Freeflow-2D implementa o método GENSMAC e foi baseado na estrutura de dados do Freeflow-3D. Os objetos geométricos (fluidos, contêineres, injetores e ejetores) são representados pela estrutura de dados B-Rep (Boundary Representation). Alguns resultados de simulação utilizando este sistema são apresentados e comparados com os do sistema Freeflow. This work presents an integrated environment for the simulation of the two-dimensional incompressible flows with free surfaces, named Freeflow-2D. This system consist of four modules: a geometric model module - Modflow-2D, a simulation module - Simflow- 2D, a visualization module - Visflow-2D and a restart module - Resimflow-2D. The communication between the modules is made by means of files. The Freeflow-2D employed the GENSMAC method and was based in the data structure of the Freeflow-3D. The geometric objects (fiuids, containers, inflows and outflows) are represented by a B-Rep (Boundary Representation) data structure. Some results of the simulation using this system are presented and compared to the results of the Freeflow system.

geração numérica de malhas tomou-se uma importante ferramenta na obtenção de soluções numéricas de equações diferenciais parciais (EDPs), em domínios físicos com geometrias complexas. Esta dissertação apresenta o Sistema Iterativo de Geração de Malha (SIGEM). O SIGEM foi desenvolvido durante este trabalho e utiliza o método diferencial que emprega EDPs elípticas para a geração da malha. O SIGEM permite a geração de malha em domínios simplesmente conexos bidimensionais, com o controle do posicionamento dos pontos pelo usuário. Para mostrar uma aplicação típica do SIGEM, foram geradas malhas em domínios irregulares, onde foram resolvidas a equação de Laplace e a equação do calor. Numerical grid generation has become an important tool in the determination of numerical solutions of pardal differential equations (PDEs) on physical domains with complex geometries. This work presents the Iterative System of Grid Generation (SIGEM). It generates grids by the partial differential equations method using elliptics PDEs. It allows the generation of grids on simply connected, two-dimensional domains. The user can control the position of individual points using appropriate forcing functions as source terms of the PDEs . To show a typical aplication of SIGEM, grids were generated on complex physical domains, followed by solution of the Laplace and the heat equations.

Este trabalho envolveu estudos nas áreas de Modelagem Geométrica, Técnicas de Modelagem e Interação Usuário-Computador e descreve a implementação de um Modelador de Moldes Tridimensional. Esse sistema tem o objetivo de prover o Simulador de Escoamento de Fluidos FREEFLOW 3D de uma ferramenta na qual o usuário possa construir o molde 3D onde um fluido será injetado, de uma forma fácil e intuitiva. O Modelador utiliza como técnicas de modelagem Varreduras e Curvas e Superfícies Livres NURBS. Para a interação com o usuário utiliza técnicas bidimensionais que auxiliam à defmição das faces geradoras necessárias aos algoritmos de modelagem. Já os moldes tridimensionais criados são representados internamente pela sua fronteira (Boundary Representation), usando uma estrutura do tipo semi-aresta (halfedge). This work contains a study on topics of Geometric Modeling and User Interaction carried out for the development of a geometric modeler for describing tridimensional containers in a direct and intuitive manner. The modeler was developed to be integrated into a 3D Flow Simulator system called FREEFLOW 3D, in order to simplify the user task of describing the domain of the flowage. The implementation of the modeler is described, as well as its functionality and user interface. As modeling techniques, it uses Sweeping and the NURBS formulation. The containers are created from bidimensional faces which are used to generate their tridimensional forms. Efficient bidimensional interaction techniques are used to simplify the process of defming the faces. Once created, the surface of the containers is transformed into a solid object with tickness, and then stored as a boundary data structure (B-Rep).

Este trabalho apresenta um método numérico para resolver escoamentos axisimétricos não-Newtonianos com superfícies livres. A metodologia empregada é uma extensão do código bidimensional GENSMAC para problemas axisimétricos. O código GENSMAC é uma técnica numérica que utiliza o método das particulas marcadoras ( \"marker-and-cell\" ) para simular escoamentos incompressíveis transientes. As equações governantes são resolvidas usando o método de diferenças finitas numa malha diferenciada ( \"staggered grid\" ). O fluido é representado por partículas marcadoras, as quais permitem a localização e visualização da superfície livre do fluido. Vários exemplos que demonstram a aplicação dessa nova técnica são apresentados. Em particular, a simulação de enchimento de moldes, do \"die-swell\" e do \"splashing drop\" são apresentados. This work presents a numerical method for solving axisymmetric non-Newtonian flows. The methodology is an extension of the two-dimensional GENSMAC code to axisymmetric flows. GENSMAC is a marker-and-cell technique for investigating the dynamics of an incompressible fluid. It solves the governing equations using the finite difference method on a staggered grid. The fluid is represented by marker particles which provide the location and visualization of the free surface. Various results demonstrating the applicability of this new technique is presented. In particular, the simulation of die-swell, container filling and the splashing drop is given.

Estudamos problemas de interpolação hermitiana em várias variáveis através de dois métodos distintos. O primeiro é uma extensão do método das bases de funções radiais para interpolação em várias variáveis. Ele baseia-se na transformada de Fourier de uma medida previamente fixada. As matrizes de interpolação produzidas por esse método são sempre positivas definidas. O segundo é uma extensão do método das funções regradas. O problema tem solução por esse método se, e somente se, uma certa matriz, denominada de matriz característica do problema, for positiva definida. Certas classes de funções completamente monótonas são utilizadas na construção de implementações dos métodos estudados. We study multivariable scattered Hermite interpolation via two distinct methods. The first one is an extension of the so-called radial-basis function method. In this case, the solutions are constructed from the Fourier transforms of certain finite measures and the associated interpolation matrices are always positive definite. The second one is an extension of the method known as interpolation by ridge functions. The existence of solutions by this method depends upon the positive definiteness of a certain matrix, here called the characteristic matrix of the problem. Certain classes of completely monotone functions are used to achieve simple realizations of the methods.

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo de técnicas para matching de imagens. Matching de imagens pode ser definido como o problema de avalíar a similaridade entre os objetos em diferentes imagens, sendo usado também para detectar mudanças em uma cena, estimar a movimentação de objetos e integrar informações de diferentes tipos de imagens. Esta dissertação apresenta um estudo teórico de técnicas de matching, a implementagão de um sistema de matching - SisMatch, e a análise de desempenho e resultados sobre as técnicas implementadas. O sistema de Matching, utíIiza as imagens produzidas pelo tomógrafo por Ressonância Magnética desenvolvido no Instituto de Física de São Carlos. This work presents a study of image matching. Image matching can be used to evaluate the similarþ between objects in different images, to detect change between scenes, to calculate movement of objects and to compile information from different kind of images. This project was based on a theoretical study of matching, the implementation of SísMatch - System of Matching and the analysis of perfonnance of the -matching methods. The images are delivered by the Magnetic Resonance tomograph under development at Physics Institute at São Carlos - USP.

Este trabalho dia respeito à solução numérica de equações algébrico - diferenciais de índices zero, um e dois. Uma classe de métodos, conhecida na literatura como métodos de diferenças para trás é considerada e alguns resultados de convergência são dados. Equações algébricas - diferenciais com singularidades também são estudadas. Alguns resultados de existência a unicidade são apresentados e uma nova classe de métodos desenvolvida por [Castelo/Tavares - 94] é introduzida. Finalizaremos este trabalho com alguns exemplos numéricos que ilustram o funcionamento dos métodos considerados. This work is concerned wiyh the numerical solution of differential - algebraic equations of indexes zero, one and two. A class of methods, known in the literature as backward difference methodfs, is considered and some convergence results are given. Differential - algebraic equations with singularities are also studieds. Some existence and uniqueness results are presented and a new class of methods developed by [Castelo/Tavares - 94] is introduced. we finish this work with some numerical exemples which ilustrete the performance of the methods considered.

Esta dissertação descreve a integração da técnica de modelagem por semi-espaços e da representação implícita a um sistema de modelagem de sólidos dotado inicialmente de uma forma de representação por fronteira e da técnica de modelagem por varredura translacional e rotacional. A representação implícita consiste em uma forma alternativa para representar os modelos descritos por semi-espaços. Cada representação implícita criada é convertida, pelo modelador, para a representação por fronteira correspondente, que é mantida como a principal forma de representação do sistema. A conversão entre as duas representações é baseada em um método simplicial de aproximação de superfícies definidas implicitamente. A técnica de descrição por semi-espaços ampliou consideravelmente o poder descritivo do modelador, pois permite a descrição de sólidos cuja fronteira possui forma complexa, as quais não são facilmente descritas através das técnicas de varredura. A disponibilidade de duas formas de representação, implícita e por fronteira, para os modelos descritos por semi-espaços, possibilita aos procedimentos de aplicação optarem pela representação mais adequada aos seus propósitos. This text describes the integration of the modeling technique by halfspaces and of an implicjt representation form into a solid modeling system that supports a boundary representation form and translational and rotational sweeping as the modeling technique. The implicit representation provides an altemative form of representing the models described by halfspaces. Each implicit representation created is converted into a corresponding boundary representation, which is kept by the system as the primary form. The conversion between representations is based on a simplicial method that aproximates implicitly defined surfaces. The modeling technique by halfspaces considerably enhances the descriptive power of the modeler as it allows the description of solids with complex geometries that cannot be easily described by sweeping techniques. The availability of both implicit and boundary representation forms for representing the models described by halfspaces enables application procedures to select the most appropriated form in order to reach their aims.

Neste trabalho pesquisamos a ordem de convergência atingível da aproximação num certo espaço polinomial spline para a solução de equações integrais de Volterra de segunda espécie com núcleo regular e fracamente singular. Se considerarmos equações de Volterra com núcleo regular, a suavidade da solução é determinada pela suavidade do núcleo dado e pela função forçante. Isto,por sua vez, implica que a aproximação por colocação exibe ordem ótima de convergência global. Superconvergência local é atingível para alguma escolha apropriada dos parâmetros de colocação. Entretanto, se admitirmos núcleos contendo singularidades fracas do tipo algébrico, e se empregarmos uma sequência de malhas quase-uniforme, então a ordem de convergência global da aproximação é menor que 1, sem considerar o grau da função da aproximação spline. Para restaurar a ordem ótima de convergência, colocação sobre uma malha convenientemente graduada será mostrada. Resultados numéricos verificando a taxa de convergência do método são apresentados. In this work w investigate the attainable order of convergence of collocation approximation in certain polynomial splin spaces for solution of second kind Volterra integral equations with regular and weakly singular kernel. If we consider Voterra equations with regular kernel, the smoothness of the solution is determined by the smoothness of the given kernel and forcing function. This, in turn, implies that the collocation approximation exhibits the (optimal) order of global converge. Local superconvergence is attained for some suitable choice of the collocation parameters. However, if we admit kernels containing a weak singularity of algebraic type, and if we employ quasi-uniform mesh sequences, then the global order of convergence of the approximation is less than one, regardless of the degree of the approximating spline fuvtion. In order to restore the optimal order of convergence, collocation on suitably graded meshes will be shown. Numerical results verifying the convergence rates of the method are presented.
