As taxas médias de incidência da AIDS em adultos no Brasil foram estimadas para os períodos 1987-89, 1990-92 e 1993-96, segundo o município de residência dos casos. Nas análises foram utilizadas as variáveis "tamanho da população do município de residência"; "proporção de população que vive em área urbana" e "concentração de pobreza", estratificando-se por sexo e categoria de exposição. A Região Sudeste apresenta menor ritmo de crescimento em contraste com os aclives acentuados das regiões Norte e Sul, do 2º ao 3º intervalo. Cotejando-se as variações das taxas de incidência de 1990-92 a 1993-96 por região ou tamanho de população, obtém-se maiores aumentos relativos entre as mulheres. Nas cidades grandes, a categoria "homo/bissexuais" prevalece, decrescendo proporcionalmente à medida que cresce o número de casos por transmissão heterossexual. Nos municípios médios predominam os usuários de drogas injetáveis e nos menores há aumento dos casos por transmissão heterossexual. A epidemia - ainda fenômeno urbano - dá sinais de expansão nos municípios rurais, intensificando-se naqueles situados abaixo do limite crítico regional do índice de pobreza. Há disseminação crescente da epidemia nos municípios mais pobres.Mean AIDS incidence rates were calculated for three time periods, 1987-89, 1990-92, and 1993-96, using reported adult AIDS cases by county. The analysis included the following variables: "population of counties for resident AIDS cases"; "proportion of population residing in urban areas", and "concentration of poverty", stratifying by gender and exposure categories. The Southeast region has experienced the lowest increase, contrasting with the steep rise observed in the North and South between the second and third study periods. Comparing variations in incidence rates from 1990-92 and 1993-96 by region or population, the greatest increase was among women. In the larger cities, AIDS cases among "homo/bisexual men" predominate, although the proportion of cases among men who have sex with men has decreased as heterosexual cases have undergone a continuous increase. IDUs have been the core stratum in medium-sized counties. For the smallest counties, heterosexual transmission has been the basic element in local dynamics. Even though AIDS is still an urban phenomenon in Brazil, the epidemic is spreading to rural counties. Until recently it has mainly affecting relatively more affluent areas, but there is now an evident spread of the epidemic to poorer areas.

Este trabalho analisa a evolução temporal dos casos de AIDS por grau de escolaridade como variável identificadora do nível sócio-econômico do caso. Todos os casos de AIDS em indivíduos com idades entre 20 e 69 anos, notificados até 29 de maio de 1999, diagnosticados entre 1986 e 1996, foram incluídos no estudo. As taxas de incidência para ambos os sexos foram calculadas segundo dois graus de escolaridade - "grau 1" (casos com até oito anos de estudo) e "grau 2" (com mais de oito anos de estudo) -, por região e ano de diagnóstico. Entre os homens, as taxas de incidência de AIDS para aqueles com menor escolaridade ultrapassam (sendo mais evidente na Região Sudeste) ou se aproximam das taxas dos homens com maior escolaridade. Para as mulheres, a evolução temporal das taxas mostrou maior ritmo de crescimento entre as mulheres de menor escolaridade para todas as regiões, sendo que, na Sudeste, as taxas entre as mulheres com menor escolaridade ultrapassa as taxas daquelas com maior escolaridade em anos anteriores a 1989. Concluindo, a presente análise mostra, de forma consistente, que a epidemia de AIDS no Brasil se iniciou nos estratos sociais de maior escolaridade, com progressiva disseminação para os estratos sociais de menor escolaridade.This article analyzes the temporal distribution of reported AIDS cases by level of education used as a proxy variable for individual socioeconomic status. All AIDS cases aged 20-69 years and reported through May 29, 1999, with date of diagnosis between 1986-1996, were included in the study. Incidence rates were calculated for men and women according to level of education ("level 1" up to 8 years of schooling and "level 2" with over 8 years of schooling), by five geographic regions, and by year of diagnosis. Incidence rates for men with less schooling were close to or higher than those for men with more schooling (particularly in the Southeast region). For women, a time series showed that incidence rates increased at a higher rate among women with less schooling in all regions of the country; in the Southeast, the incidence rate for women with less schooling was already greater than for women with more schooling by 1989. According to the present analysis, the AIDS epidemic in Brazil began among people from the more highly educated social strata and progressed steadily through to the less educated social strata, especially among women.

Oral narrative retells are rich sources of information for language development. Investigators collected English-language oral narrative retells during the fall and spring from 65 Spanish-English-speaking dual language learners (DLL) in kindergarten and first grade. Investigators examined transcripts of oral narratives for (a) inclusion and accuracy of microstructural elements using the Narrative Assessment Protocol (NAP; Pence, Justice, & Gosse, 2007), (b) percentage of grammatical utterances, and (c) types of verb errors. Prepositional phrases, elaborated noun phrases, irregular past tense verbs, and copula verbs were the most prevalent grammatical forms. Omission errors were the most prevalent verb error type. DLLs' narrative retells revealed significantly increased number of total NAP codes and diversity of NAP codes. Grammaticality of utterances increased from approximately 77% to 87% from fall to spring. All verb errors types decreased over the academic year. Direct feature coding approaches are useful for tracking developmental progress in DLLs' retells.

Work at the intersection of blockchain technology and law suffers from a distinct linguistic disadvantage. As a highly interdisciplinary area of inquiry, legal researchers, lawmakers, researchers in the technical sciences, and the public all talk past each other, using the same words, but as different terms of art. Evidence of these language wars largely derives from anecdote. To better assess the nature and scope of the problem, this Article uses corpus linguistics to reveal the inherent value conflicts embedded in definitional differences and debates related to developing regulation in one specific area of the blockchain technology ecosystem: cryptocurrency. Using cryptocurrency as a case study reveals the delicate balance necessary to develop law in even the best popularly understood area of blockchain technology. Resistance to endocrine therapy in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer is a major clinical problem with poorly understood mechanisms. There is an unmet need for prognostic and predictive biomarkers to allow appropriate therapeutic targeting. We evaluated the mechanism by which minichromosome maintenance protein 3 (MCM3) influences endocrine resistance and its predictive/prognostic potential in ER+ breast cancer. We discovered that ER+ breast cancer cells survive tamoxifen and letrozole treatments through upregulation of minichromosome maintenance proteins (MCMs), including MCM3, which are key molecules in the cell cycle and DNA replication. Lowering MCM3 expression in endocrine-resistant cells restored drug sensitivity and altered phosphorylation of cell cycle regulators, including p53(Ser315,33), CHK1(Ser317), and cdc25b(Ser323), suggesting that the interaction of MCM3 with cell cycle proteins is an important mechanism of overcoming replicative stress and anti-proliferative effects of endocrine treatments. Interestingly, the MCM3 levels did not affect the efficacy of growth inhibitory by CDK4/6 inhibitors. Evaluation of MCM3 levels in primary tumors from four independent cohorts of breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant tamoxifen mono-therapy or no adjuvant treatment, including the Stockholm tamoxifen (STO-3) trial, showed MCM3 to be an independent prognostic marker adding information beyond Ki67. In addition, MCM3 was shown to be a predictive marker of response to endocrine treatment. Our study reveals a coordinated signaling network centered around MCM3 that limits response to endocrine therapy in ER+ breast cancer and identifies MCM3 as a clinically useful prognostic and predictive biomarker that allows personalized treatment of ER+ breast cancer patients.
