Enthalpies and entropies of sorption of water on Linde 4-A and 5-A zelites have been evaluated from data provided by Union Carbide Corporation. The results above 5 molecules of water per unit cell of zeolite show the expected general behavior of water on the heterogeneous zeolite surface. Some interesting additional behavior is observed showing a temperature dependence of the heat of sorption at higher water contents than that required to cover the most energetic sorption sites. This is discussed in terms of the interactions possible in the zeolite cavities.

The dielectric properties of the Linde Molecular Sieve Zeolite Type 5-A with a series of polar and non-polar adsorbates (NH3, SO2, CO2 and n-C5H12) have been investigated in the frequency range 5 Hz to 148 kHz. A region of dielectric absorption is observed which has been assigned to a jumping process involving the interstitial cations. A possible mechanism for the process is discussed and the results analysed on the basis of the apparent dipole moment, associated with the cation jump, which is obtained from the dielectric absorption parameters. The theoretical basis of the analysis is given in an appendix. Plots of the permittivity increment against adsorbate content for polar adsorbates are discussed in terms of the rotational mobility of the sorbed phase.

When the nature-writer Ernest Thompson Seton died in the autumn of 1946, few British newspapers carried an adequate obituary. He had, it seemed, already passed into obscurity. It was a fate hardly deserved. In his prime Seton had gained fame as a writer, artist, and naturalist, and his books on animal life, once nursery classics, had been a dominant influence on a whole generation of young naturalists.1 He was also the founder of the first outdoor youth movement, and it is with this aspect of his career that the present paper deals. There has always been an undercurrent of controversy about the founding of the Boy Scout movement, in spite of the innumerable volumes that have been written on the history of the organization. Such a controversy was expressed unobtrusively in a letter from Lord Northcliffe to a friend, in which he wrote: 'Be very wary of B-P. He is not the inventor of the idea of Boy Scouts.'2 And as early as 1913 Lord Baden-Powell thought it necessary to write a 'Note for when I am Dead', explaining how he had founded the Boy Scouts. Surely an unusual course of action, unless he suspected that one day his claims would come to be challenged ? Even within the movement a doubt still lingers, and a recent (1963) editorial comment in The Scouter remarked that 'at one time there were strong feelings abroad that the Scout movement was not founded by B-P but that it was started by that famous American

A collection of epiphytic orchids was made during 1964/65 from the Shire Highlands, Malawi, an area hitherto only partially explored botanically. The survey revealed not only a wealth of interesting epiphytic species, but also showed a degree of correlation between the main vegetation types covering the Highlands, and the epiphytic orchid-flora to be found in each respective habitat. This aspect of orchid ecology is discussed on the basis of personal observation. The Appendix contains a preliminary check-list of the epiphytic orchids of the Shire Highlands, and includes both the description of a new species of Bulbophyllum, and short field-notes on several undescribed species.

The permittivity and dielectric loss factor for the Molecular Sieve Zeolites type 3-A and 4-A and a silver exchange form of type-A have been measured in the frequency range 5 Hz to 140 MHz with various amounts of adsorbed water present. A region of dielectric loss in all three may be attributed to movement, within the cavities, of the interstitial cations. The activation energy for the process varies with water content and at any one water content a linear relationship exists between the activation energies and the size of the cations concerned. The behaviour of the activation energy with temperature suggests some change of phase of the adsorbed water takes place, equivalent to freezing, at a temperature well below 0°C. A further region of dielectric absorption has been observed which has been attributed to relaxation, with an ice-like character, of the major part of the adsorbed water dipole moment. The remainder of the water dipole relaxing by motions, other than complete reorientation, at higher frequencies than those available in the present study.

The World Agricultural Outlook Board (WAOB), under the direction of the Department of Agriculture's Office of the Chief Economist, employs a staff of agricultural meteorologists whose mission is to monitor and assess the impacts of weather and climate on crops in key growing areas throughout the world. The results of those analyses contribute to the deliberations conducted by the Interagency Commodity Estimates Committees (ICEC) led by analysts at the World Agricultural Outlook Board. The results of those deliberations can be found in the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, one of the designated Principle Federal Economic Indicators issued monthly by the Federal Government (White House (Office of Management and Budget), 2015). The process used to develop those estimates each month requires the integration of an assessment of the current climatic conditions with knowledge of the agricultural practices and market conditions of a particular country. Weather and climate data are used in conjunction with information on when and where crops are planted, production practices including irrigation, which varieties are best suited for that particular climate, and what naturally occurring hazards can be expected in any given year. Being able to closely compare current conditions to historic observations of weather and realized output on a fine scale, temporally and geographically, is a key component of the international estimates in the WASDE process.

Duke Power Company serves nearly one and one half million customers in the Piedmont area of the Carolinas. Duke's service area covers approximately 20,000 square miles and is served through more than 60,000 miles of distribution line. The Distribution Right-of-Way Maintenance operation requires the full-time services of approximately 200 contract tree crews from six different contractors. This represents a tremendous number of dollars, but on the positive side, it represents an unbelievable opportunity in the area of customer contacts. Duke Power recognizes this opportunity and intends to take advantage of the situation in order to maximize good customer relations and service.

Family linkage studies were used to detect two linkage relationships on human chromosome 1. The B subunit of coagulation factor XIII showed significant linkage to renin with a maximum lod score of 5.071 at a distance of 10 cM. Significant linkage was also shown between the Duffy blood group and alpha-spectrin with linkage results giving a combined lod score of 3.194 at 5 cM.

The genetic basis of primary hypertension is not known. Renin is important in blood pressure and volume control and a HindIII restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) is present within the human renin gene locus. To examine whether there is a relationship between this RFLP and primary hypertension, DNA and renin analyses were performed on leukocytes and plasma from hypertensive and normotensive individuals. In hypertensives the frequencies of alleles for the HindIII RFLP were found to be 0.55 and 0.45, compared with 0.60 and 0.40 in the total population of 231 subjects examined, a difference that was not statistically significant. There also appeared to be no significant difference in renin activity in plasma for hypertensive patients of each genotype, nor in their pre- or post-treatment blood pressures. We thus conclude that, within the limits of the present study, the suspected genetic abnormalities associated with primary hypertension in man do not appear to be related to a HindIII RFLP in the renin gene.
