Induction of cytochrome P450 enzymes by exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) can result in both decreased or increased PAH adduct levels. The lung is a main target site for PAH-carcinogenesis. By HPLC determination of B [a]P-r-7, t-8-dihydrodiol, t-9, 10-epoxide (BPDE-I)-DNA adducts in rat, the level of the ultimate carcinogenic B[a]P-metabolite was higher in lungs than in liver. However, measured by immunoassay, the total benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P)-DNA adduct levels were higher in liver than in lungs. Induction of CYP1A1 in vivo in rat by repeated i.p. doses of methylcholanthrene (MC) prior to a single dose of B[a]P resulted in a 2.4 times increase in CYP1A1 activity in liver tissue and 1.5 times higher levelsof total B[a]P-DNA adducts in lung and liver compared with controls which only received B[a]P. Increased levels of BPDE-I-DNA adducts were significantly correlated to increased CYP1A1 activity in induced lung tissue but not in liver. The times to reach maximum adduct levels were similar for both controls and MC-induced rats in both lung and liver,and plasma albumin. The BPDE-I-albumin adducts reached a maximum level around 1 day after B[a]P exposure and could not be used as a reliable marker of the short term PAH exposure in this study.

The purpose of this study was to assess the platelet aggregation and releasable platelet ATP in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis (n = 10) and primary biliary cirrhosis (n = 10). In patients with liver disease a significant decrease was found in both adenosine diphosphate-induced aggregation (P<0.01) and collagen-induced aggregation (P < 0.001) compared with that of controls, but there was no significant difference between the two groups of patients. Patients with primary biliary cirrhosis release smaller amounts of ATP than patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, and compared with the controls there was a significant (P < 0.001) decrease in the releasable ATP in the patient groups. These results suggest that platelets are damaged during an intravascular activation (loss of granules), which gives rise to their subsequent hypo-function when tested in vitro.

The mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH; arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus [ARH] and median eminence [ME]) is a key nutrient sensing site for the production of the complex homeostatic feedback responses required for the maintenance of energy balance. Here, we show that refeeding after an overnight fast rapidly triggers proliferation and differentiation of oligodendrocyte progenitors, leading to the production of new oligodendrocytes in the ME specifically. During this nutritional paradigm, ME perineuronal nets (PNNs), emerging regulators of ARH metabolic functions, are rapidly remodeled, and this process requires myelin regulatory factor (Myrf) in oligodendrocyte progenitors. In genetically obese ob/obmice, nutritional regulations of ME oligodendrocyte differentiation and PNN remodeling are blunted, and enzymatic digestion of local PNN increases food intake and weight gain. We conclude that MBH PNNs are required for the maintenance of energy balance in lean mice and are remodeled in the adult ME by the nutritional control of oligodendrocyte differentiation.

To obtain information about their knowledge and their degree of acceptance of their child's condition, the parents of children with cystic fibrosis were asked to give a general judgement of their child's handicap. The study was based on questionnaires answered by the parents of 90 children with cystic fibrosis. One pediatrician and one social worker independently gave their judgement on the same issues. The parents judged 61% of the children as lightly handicapped, 33% as moderately, and 6% as seriously affected, while the professional judgement was 43%, 37% and 19%, respectively. The study indicates that the parents tend to judge their child's condition as less severe than the professionals. The difference of opinion is greatest in the group of seriously affected children.

There is currently a wide selection of possible feedstocks, a variety of conversion routes, and a number of different end products that can be produced at a range of scales. However, economic slowdown, low oil prices, lack of global political will, and lingering questions regarding land use change and the sustainability of bioenergy production systems provide a challenging global context to speed the pace of investment. The opinions expressed in this paper are derived from our collaboration within IEABioenergy to determine opportunities as well as barriers that need to be overcome to realize opportunities on a wider scale. This comprehensive and novel collaborative effort confirmed that feedstocks produced using logistically efficient production systems can be mobilized to make significant contributions to achieving global targets for bioenergy. At the same time, significant barriers to large‐scale implementation exist in many regions. The mobilization potential identified in the study will depend on both increases in supply chain efficiencies and profits and strong policy support to increase stakeholder and investor confidence. In this paper, we present a study of wafer-level process for deposition of amorphous thin film MoS2 by radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering technique. Thin film deposition was performed in argon atmosphere with pressure around 10-2to 10-4Torr, RF power between 100-250 W and temperature from room temperature up to 250°C. X-ray diffraction indicates that the thin films are amorphous. Deposition rate and sulphur concentration showed a clear dependence on variation in RF power. Surface roughness increase as temperature was increased from room temperature up to 250°C. Photocurrent increases about 20% under white light illumination. The thin films are continuous with low roughness which might make it a potential candidate for wafer-scale production for advanced electronics or sensor applications.

Abstract: We report the case of a patient with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) secondary to a partial deficiency of 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. This form occurs in less than 1 % of all patients with CAH. Sonographic evaluation of the adrenal glands demonstrated width and length measurements significantly above normal values. The sonographic findings are not diagnostic of the particular enzyme deficiency in CAH, and the exact etiology should be pursued with laboratory investigation.
