Abstract

The present work represents a continuation of part I of this series of papers, in which we investigated the phenol yields in the OH-initiated oxidation of benzene under conditions of low to moderate concentrations of NOx, to elevated NOx levels. The products of the OH-initiated oxidation of benzene in 700 760 Torr of N-2/O-2 diluent at 297 +/- 4 K were investigated in 3 different photochemical reaction chambers. In situ spectroscopic techniques were employed for the detection of products, and the initial concentrations of benzene, NOx, and O-2 were widely varied (by factors of 6300, 1500, and 13, respectively). In contrast to results from previous studies, a pronounced dependence of the product distribution on the NOx concentration was observed. The phenol yield decreases from approximately 50-60% in the presence of low concentrations (10 000 ppb) NOx concentrations. In the presence of high concentrations of NOx, the phenol yield increases with increasing O-2 partial pressure. The rate constant of the reaction of hydroxycyclohexadienyl peroxyl radicals with NO was determined to be (1.7 +/- 0.6) x 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). This reaction leads to the formation of E, E-2,4-hexadienedial as the main identiable product (29 +/- 16. The reaction of the hydroxycyclohexadienyl radical with NO2 gave phenol (5.9 +/- 3.4 and E,E-2,4-hexadienedial (3.4 +/- 1.9, no other products could be identified. The residual FTIR product spectra indicate the formation of unknown nitrates or other nitrogen-containing species in high yield. The results from the present work also show that experimental studies aimed at establishing/verifying chemical mechanisms for aromatic hydrocarbons must be performed using NOx levels which are representative of those found in the atmosphere.

261. Microsatellite markers reflect intra-specific relationships between isolates of the vascular wilt pathogen Ceratocystis fimbriata

Abstract

Ceratocystis fimbriata is a serious wilt and canker stain pathogen with a wide geographical distribution and host range that includes both woody and herbaceous plants. Previous studies using hybridization have shown that isolates of C. fimbriata from different hosts and origins differ in colony morphology, pathogenicity and growth rate, as well as conidial state. It has therefore been suggested that distinct strains, linked to host or geographical origin, are encompassed in C. fimbriata. The aim of this study was to develop PCR-based microsatellite markers for population studies on C. fimbriata. ISSR-PCR was used to target specific microsatellite regions of DNA from C. fimbriata. These amplified products were cloned and sequenced. Primer pairs were designed from these sequences to flank the microsatellite regions. From 24 primer pairs, 11 polymorphic primers were selected and tested on a number of C. fimbriata isolates representing a wide host and geographical range. Cluster analyses of the results indicate that these markers clearly distinguish between different geographical and host specific populations of C. fimbriata. The results are concordant with sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA operon of the same isolates. These markers will be useful in future studies of C. fimbriata population structure and diversity.

Abstract

Debris produced by the normal wear and abrasion of vehicle tires consists of particles, which range in size from micrometres to millimetres. The transport of oxygenated organics by tire debris is related to two properties: the chemical composition of the material and the physics and morphology of the particles. The latter properties have been investigated by the authors by a variety of methods; the orresponding results will be presented. Moreover, estimates of the physical parameters will be provided, which pertain to the adsorption of volatile organic compounds by the airborne particle.

Abstract

Background:Anal cancer incidence increases with age and is higher in women than men. Risk factors in this group other than high-risk human papillomavirus infection are unclear.Methods:In all, 1.3 million women were recruited in 1996-2001 and followed for incident anal cancer. Cox regression models were used to calculate relative risks (RRs) for anal cancer by various potential risk factors.Results:Five hundred and seventeen incident anal cancers were registered over 13 years of follow-up. The largest RR was associated with a history of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 (CIN 3; RR=4.03, 95% CI 2.59-6.28). Other factors associated with significantly increased risks in multivariate analyses were: ever smoking (RR=1.49, 1.24-1.80); previous use of oral contraceptives (RR=1.51, 1.24-1.83); nulliparity (RR=1.61, 1.24-2.07); tubal ligation (RR=1.39, 1.13-1.70) and not living with a partner (RR=1.82, 1.40-2.38). The association with smoking was significantly greater for squamous cell carcinoma than adenocarcinoma of the anus (RR 1.66 vs 0.89, P for heterogeneity=0.04).Conclusions:History of CIN 3, smoking, past oral contraceptive use, nulliparity, tubal ligation and not living with a partner are risk factors for anal cancer in women. Abstract

An absolute rate pulse radiolysis technique was used to measure k(OH + 1,3-dioxolane) = (8.8 ± 0.9) × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 295 K in 1000 mbar of Ar. Relative rate techniques were used to study the reactions of OH radicals and Cl atoms with 1,3-dioxolane and Cl atoms with ethylene carbonate and methylene glycol diformate at 300 K in 1 bar of synthetic air. Rate coefficients were k(OH + 1,3-dioxolane) = (1.04 ± 0.16) × 10-11, k(Cl + 1,3-dioxolane) = (1.6 ± 0.3) × 10-10, k(Cl + ethylene carbonate) = (7.1 ± 1.7) × 10-12, and k(Cl + methylene glycol diformate) = (5.6 ± 0.7) × 10-13 cm3 molecule-1 s-1. OH radical and chlorine atom initiated oxidation of 1,3-dioxolane in 1 bar of N2/O2 mixtures at 298 K in the presence of NOx gives ethylene carbonate and methylene glycol diformate. Molar yields of ethylene carbonate and methylene glycol diformate were 0.48 ± 0.07 and 0.50 ± 0.14 for OH radical initiation and 0.43 ± 0.07 and 0.53 ± 0.07 for Cl atom initiation. Product yields were independent of O2 partial pressure over the range studied (60-800 mbar). A photochemical mechanism was developed to describe the OH-initiated degradation of 1,3-dioxolane in the presence of NOx. The results are discussed with respect to the available literature data concerning the atmospheric chemistry of ethers.

285. Outcome of pregnancy in patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries.

Abstract

To assess maternal and fetal outcome of pregnancy in patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries, we reviewed 19 patients (18 retrospectively) who had 45 pregnancies. Their ages ranged from 18 to 40 years (mean 27) at the time of pregnancy. Thirty-six percent of the pregnancies were undertaken while patients were cyanosed, 7% in patients with unpaced complete heart block, and 16% were undertaken after surgical repair of the associated anomalies. Change in functional class and maternal cardiovascular complications during pregnancy were analyzed as well as number of live births, miscarriages, elective termination of pregnancies, timing of delivery, and incidence of cardiac defects in the live offspring. Five patients (26% of patients) developed cardiovascular complications during pregnancy, namely congestive heart failure (3 patients), worsening cyanosis (1 patient), and cerebrovascular accident (1 patient). No maternal deaths occurred. There were 27 live births (60%), 12 miscarriages (27%), and 6 elective terminations of pregnancy (13%). Cyanosis was a significant risk factor for miscarriage. One live offspring had congenital heart disease. Close follow-up of these patients during pregnancy, by a team of experienced physicians, is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One important group of oxygenated organic compounds is the vinyl ethers, which are widely used as solvents, additives and coatings. The increasing use of organic oxygenates as solvents has led to the need for knowledge on their contribution to the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere, their possible contribution to toxic contaminant formation, indoor pollution and their contribution to secondary organic aersol (SOA) formation. Abstract

The products of the OH radical initiated oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) have been investigated under NOx-free conditions using the photolysis of H2O2 as the OH radical source and FT-IR spectroscopy to monitor reactants and products. The experiments were performed at five different temperatures (260, 270, 280, 290 and 298 K), at three different O2 partial pressure (~0, 205 and 500 mbar) and at a total pressure of 1,000 mbar diluent gas (N2, synthetic air or N2/O2 mixture). The major sulfur-containing products were dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and sulfur dioxide (SOM2). As minor sulfur-containing products dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2), methyl thiol formate (MTF) and carbonyl sulfide (OCS) have been identified; the formation of trace amounts of methane sulfonic acid (MSA) were also observed. The variation of the product yields with temperature and O2 partial pressure is consistent with the occurrence of both addition and abstraction channels in the OH radical initiated oxidation of DMS. The molar formation yields of DMSO support that a major fraction of the DMS-OH adduct formed in the addition channel reacts with O2 to form DMSO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Rate coefficients for the reactions of OH radicals and Cl atoms with methyl methacrylate have been determined at 298 ± 2 K and 760 ± 10 Torr in two different photoreactors: a 405 l Duran glass and a 1,080 l quartz glass reaction chamber, coupled with in situ FTIR spectroscopy. Values of kOH = (0.43 ± 0.05) × 10−10 and kCl = (2.86 ± 1.37) × 10−10 in units of cm3 molecule−1 s−1 were obtained. Methyl pyruvate, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide were determined as products in the reaction of methyl methacrylate with OH radicals in accordance with OH radical addition to the less substituted carbon of the double bond.
