- Abstract
Biomass burning is a major source of light-absorbing organic aerosol (brown carbon), but its composition, chemical evolution, and lifetime are not well known. We measured water-soluble brown carbon absorption from 310–500 nm on the NOAA Twin Otter aircraft during flights downwind of western United States wildfires in summer 2019. The sampling strategy was near-Lagrangian and the plume ages spanned 0–5 h. Trends in brown carbon mass absorption coefficient with plume age varied between flights, and did not show an exponential decay over these short time scales. The measured absorption spectra were smoothly varying, without identifiable contributions from individual chromophores with structured absorption. Using aerosol tracer ions and reference absorption spectra, the calculated contribution of 4-nitrocatechol to total absorption was <22±9% and <11±5%, although spectral fitting showed that it may be as low as <1.1% and <0.6% at 365 and 405 nm, respectively.

- Abstract
A new generation magnetic spectrometer in space will open the opportunity to inves-tigate the frontiers in direct high-energy cosmic ray measurements and to precisely measure the amount of the rare antimatter component in cosmic rays beyond the reach of current missions. We propose the concept for an Antimatter Large Acceptance Detector In Orbit (ALADInO), designed to take over the legacy of direct measurements of cosmic rays in space performed by PAMELA and AMS-02. ALADInO features technological solutions conceived to overcome the current limi-tations of magnetic spectrometers in space with a layout that provides an acceptance larger than 10 m2 sr. A superconducting magnet coupled to precision tracking and time-of-flight systems can provide the required matter–antimatter separation capabilities and rigidity measurement resolution with a Maximum Detectable Rigidity better than 20 TV. The inner 3D-imaging deep calorimeter, designed to maximize the isotropic acceptance of particles, allows for the measurement of cosmic rays up to PeV energies with accurate energy resolution to precisely measure features in the cosmic ray spectra. The operations of ALADInO in the Sun–Earth L2 Lagrangian point for at least 5 years would enable unique revolutionary observations with groundbreaking discovery poten-tials in the field of astroparticle physics by precision measurements of electrons, positrons, and antiprotons up to 10 TeV and of nuclear cosmic rays up to PeV energies, and by the possible unam-biguous detection and measurement of low-energy antideuteron and antihelium components in cosmic rays., QC 20230227

High-grade gliomas (HGGs) are the most frequently diagnosed primary brain tumors. Even though it has been demonstrated that combined surgical therapy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy improve survival, HGGs still harbor a very poor prognosis and limited overall survival. Differently from other types of primary neoplasm, HGG manifests also as a neurological disease. According to this, palliative care of HGG patients represents a peculiar challenge for healthcare providers and caregivers since it has to be directed to both general and neurological cancer symptoms. In this way, the end-of-life (EOL) phase of HGG patients appears to be like a journey through medical issues, progressive neurological deterioration, and psychological, social, and affective concerns. EOL is intended as the time prior to death when symptoms increase and antitumoral therapy is no longer effective. In this phase, palliative care is intended as an integrated support aimed to reduce the symptoms burden and improve the Quality Of Life (QOL). Palliative care is represented by medical, physical, psychological, spiritual, and social interventions which are primarily aimed to sustain patients’ functions during the disease time, while maintaining an acceptable quality of life and ensuring a dignified death. Since HGGs represent also a family concern, due to the profound emotional and relational issues that the progression of the disease poses, palliative care may also relieve the distress of the caregivers and increase the satisfaction of patients’ relatives. We present the results of a literature review addressed to enlighten and classify the best medical, psychological, rehabilitative, and social interventions that are addressed both to patients and to their caregivers, which are currently adopted as palliative care during the EOL phase of HGG patients in order to orientate the best medical practice in HGG management.

Phytoremediation is a potentially suitable technique for the reclamation of toxic landfill leachate (LL) by decreasing its volume through water uptake and improving its composition by uptake, accumulation and amelioration of pollutants. We investigated the use of two parameters, the LL concentration and the Leachate Pollution Index (LPI), a method used to determine the phytotoxicity potential of a leachate source based on a weighted sum of its components, to set the best LL dilution to apply when poplar clone ‘Orion’ and willow clone ‘Levante’ are selected for phytoremediation. Cuttings were watered with five LL concentrations ranging from 0 to 100%. The poplar clone showed significantly higher values than the willow clone for lowest effective concentration index (LOEC) for leaf (i.e. 11.3% vs 10.5%; p = 0.0284) and total biomass (i.e. 10.9% vs 10.6%; p = 0.0402) and for lowest effective LPI for leaf (i.e. 12.3 vs 12.1; p = 0.0359) and total biomass (i.e. 12.8 versus 12.2; p = 0.0365), respectively, with effectiveness demonstrating the LOEC or LPI value at which the parameter is negatively affected. Photosynthetic rates were higher in poplar than willow in both control and the lowest LL dilution, but rapidly declined in both at higher LL dilutions. Although a direct translation of data from bench trials to field conditions should be investigated, we concluded that in the establishment phase, the poplar hybrid is more tolerant than the willow hybrid to LL. We also provide evidence for LPI as a potential predictor for setting LL irrigation levels in the initial phase of a phyto-treatment approach.

Bent silicon crystals mounted on high-accuracy angular actuators were installed in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and extensively tested to assess the feasibility of crystal-assisted collimation in circular hadron colliders. The adopted layout was exploited and regularly upgraded for about a decade by the UA9 Collaboration. The investigations provided the compelling evidence of a strong reduction of beam losses induced by nuclear inelastic interactions in the aligned crystals in comparison with amorphous orientation. A conceptually similar device, installed in the betatron cleaning insertion of CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), was operated through the complete acceleration and storage cycle and demonstrated a large reduction of the background leaking from the collimation region and radiated into the cold sections of the accelerator and the experimental detectors. The implemented layout and the relevant results of the beam tests performed in the SPS and in the LHC with stored proton and ion beams are extensively discussed.

We analyzed a cohort of patients with cancer and Sars-Cov-2 infection from the Veneto Oncology Network registry across two pandemic time periods.761 patients with cancer and SARS-CoV-2 infection were included.198 patients were diagnosed during the first pandemic time period (TP1; February 2020 September 2020), 494 during TP2 before the vaccination campaign (TP2/pre-vaccination; September 2020-21 February 2021) and 69 in TP2/post-vaccination (22 February 2021-15 May 2021). TP2 vs TP1 patients were younger (p = 0.004), showed more frequently a good performance status (p0.001) and2 comorbidities (p = 0.002), were more likely to be on active anticancer therapy (p = 0.006). Significantly fewer patients in TP2 (3-4%) vs TP1 (22%) had an in-hospital potential source of infection (p0.001). TP2 patients were more frequently asymptomatic (p = 0.003). Significantly fewer patients from TP2 were hospitalized (p0.001) or admitted to intensive care unit (p = 0.006). All-cause mortality decreased from 30.3% in TP1, to 8.9% and 8.7% in the two TP2 periods (p0.001), reflected by a significant reduction in Sars-Cov-2-related mortality (15.2%, 7.5% and 5.8% in the three consecutive time periods, p = 0.004).Differences in clinical characteristics and features of Sars-Cov-2 infection between TP1 and TP2 reflect the effects of protective measures and increased testing capacity. The lower mortality in TP2 is in line with a less frail population. However, the vast majority of death events in TP2 were related to COVID-19, reinforcing the priority to protect cancer patients.

DAMPE (DArk Matter Particle Explorer) is a satellite-based experiment launched in December 2015 and smoothly taking data after five years of mission. The Silicon-Tungsten Tracker (STK) is characterized by 6 double layers of silicon micro-strip detectors, for a total detection area of 7 m2, and three 1 mm thick tungsten plates, placed in the mechanical support structure, aimed to the photon conversion in e± pairs. The STK has a double role: precise reconstruction of the track of charged particles with a spatial resolution around 40 μm for most incident angles of the incoming particles, identification of the charge of the incoming cosmic rays. The STK performances are excellent after five years of continuous operation in space: in this contribution the STK in-orbit calibration and performances during the whole DAMPE mission will be presented.

- Abstract
Poplar and willow demonstrate great potential for the phytoextraction of trace elements (TEs) from soils. In most cases, these species are managed as short-rotation coppice, producing high woody biomass yields, which could provide a valuable contribution toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. In the current study, we compared the TE extraction and CO2 sequestration rates in a four-year field trial in Southern Italy of two arboreal species (willow and poplar). The results show that, once established in the study area, willow extracted more Cd and Cu and less Pb than poplar. The two species demonstrated the same average Ni and Zn extraction rates. Greater biomass yields in poplar suggest that this species was able to fix greater amounts of CO2 (28.7 Mg ha−1 yr−1) than willow (24.9 Mg ha−1 yr−1). We argue that the choice of the species to be used in phytoextraction should first be made considering the TE-specific affinity and phytoextraction rates. For TEs whose extraction rates were the same (i.e., Ni and Zn), poplar is to be preferred because of its ability to fix greater amounts of CO2 than willow.

Essential and toxic ions are often heterogeneously distributed within a soil landscape. This fact may complicate phytoextraction efforts to remove toxic ions such as heavy metals from the soil as the roots of some plants instead may colonize more favorable microenvironments and avoid heavy metal accumulation. In this study a split-root hydroponic experiment was used to test whether root-level exposure to zinc (Zn) stress to none, half or all of the root systems of Populus deltoides Bart. ex Marshall x Populus nigra L. (poplar) and Salix matsudana L. (willow) plants alters root and shoot physiology. Cuttings of both species were split to create two root system halves that were exposed to either control (-Zn) or stress (+1 mM Zn) solutions for 42 days. Weekly measurements of gas exchange, photosystem fluorescence parameters and pigments showed that poplar was more sensitive to the half stress (-Zn/+Zn) treatment than willow, with lower gas exchange rates and total chlorophyll and carotenoid values relative to their respective controls (-Zn/-Zn). Half stress willow plants had increased root growth in the half without Zn, demonstrating a reallocation of carbon to compensate with no negative impact to shoot physiology as compared to poplar. Water consumption was also reduced in half stress willow but not in poplar, suggesting an increase in water-use efficiency in response to heterogeneous Zn exposure that was not derived from dramatic reductions in transpiration rate. These significant differences between these two species in response to patchy distribution of toxic Zn concentration may impact the efficiency of phytoremediation efforts and suggests additional criteria to consider in the pre-selection process.

letteratura italiana, tematologia - Abstract

DAMPE satellite has directly measured the cosmic ray proton spectrum from 40 GeV to 100 TeV and revealed a new feature at about 13.6 TeV., The precise measurement of the spectrum of protons, the most abundant component of the cosmic radiation, is necessary to understand the source and acceleration of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. This work reports the measurement of the cosmic ray proton fluxes with kinetic energies from 40 GeV to 100 TeV, with 2 1/2 years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). This is the first time that an experiment directly measures the cosmic ray protons up to ~100 TeV with high statistics. The measured spectrum confirms the spectral hardening at ~300 GeV found by previous experiments and reveals a softening at ~13.6 TeV, with the spectral index changing from ~2.60 to ~2.85. Our result suggests the existence of a new spectral feature of cosmic rays at energies lower than the so-called knee and sheds new light on the origin of Galactic cosmic rays.

Phytotechnological approaches using living plants are currently being proposed to address a wide range of environmental purposes including the treatment of landfill leachate (LL). Despite their popularity, few studies have investigated this possibility under actual Mediterranean conditions using fast-growing trees. This research reports the results of a two-year project where poplar and willow grown in mesocosm were tested for their ability to withstand and remove specific pollutants from different [Low: 7% (1st year) and 15% (2nd year); High: 15% (1st year) and 30% (2nd year)] amounts of LL. Results indicate that both species were able to treat 340 (Low) and 680 (High) m3 ha-1 in the establishment year (70 days) and 2470 (Low) and 4950 (High) m3 ha-1 in the second year (150 days). Both species yielded the same aboveground biomass, but under high LL treatment, poplar performed better than willow. Poplar showed on average significantly higher extraction rates for Cd, Cu, P, and N than willow. Moreover, under high LL treatment, poplar also seemed more efficient than willow in decreasing the concentration of specific pollutants (BOD5, COD and As) in output effluent. However, with low LL loads both species were able to significantly reduce other compounds (i.e. NH4-N, Cu and Ni). By contrast, Cl, surfactants, and NO3-N, had a tendency to accumulate over time in the effluent and could still represent an actual constraint to large-scale application of the technique. The fate of such pollutants should be investigated with further research to better inform strategies used to manage low amounts of high-concentrated effluent.

traduzione - Abstract

Astrophysics - Abstract
The Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission is the sixth Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite developed by a large international collaboration, including Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe. The mission aimed to provide the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E greater than 2 keV, using a microcalorimeter instrument, and to cover a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. After a successful launch on 2016 February 17, the spacecraft lost its function on 2016 March 26, but the commissioning phase for about a month provided valuable information on the on-board instruments and the spacecraft system, including astrophysical results obtained from first light observations. The paper describes the Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission, its capabilities, the initial operation, and the instruments/spacecraft performances confirmed during the commissioning operations for about a month.

Astrophysics - Abstract
The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, is greater than 8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the current technical and programmatic status of the mission.
