We tackle the problem of Human Locomotion Forecasting, a task for jointly predicting the spatial positions of several keypoints on the human body in the near future under an egocentric setting. In contrast to the previous work that aims to solve either the task of pose prediction or trajectory forecasting in isolation, we propose a framework to unify the two problems and address the practically useful task of pedestrian locomotion prediction in the wild. Among the major challenges in solving this task is the scarcity of annotated egocentric video datasets with dense annotations for pose, depth, or egomotion. To surmount this difficulty, we use state-of-the-art models to generate (noisy) annotations and propose robust forecasting models that can learn from this noisy supervision. We present a method to disentangle the overall pedestrian motion into easier to learn subparts by utilizing a pose completion and a decomposition module. The completion module fills in the missing key-point annotations and the decomposition module breaks the cleaned locomotion down to global (trajectory) and local (pose keypoint movements). Further, with Quasi RNN as our backbone, we propose a novel hierarchical trajectory forecasting network that utilizes low-level vision domain specific signals like egomotion and depth to predict the global trajectory. Presence of bias (in datasets or tasks) is inarguably one of the most critical challenges in machine learning applications that has alluded to pivotal debates in recent years. Such challenges range from spurious associations between variables in medical studies to the bias of race in gender or face recognition systems. Controlling for all types of biases in the dataset curation stage is cumbersome and sometimes impossible. The alternative is to use the available data and build models incorporating fair representation learning. In this paper, we propose such a model based on adversarial training with two competing objectives to learn features that have (1) maximum discriminative power with respect to the task and (2) minimal statistical mean dependence with the protected (bias) variable(s). Our approach does so by incorporating a new adversarial loss function that encourages a vanished correlation between the bias and the learned features. We apply our method to synthetic data, medical images (containing task bias), and a dataset for gender classification (containing dataset bias). Our results show that the learned features by our method not only result in superior prediction performance but also are unbiased. Modeling and prediction of human motion dynamics has long been a challenging problem in computer vision, and most existing methods rely on the end-to-end supervised training of various architectures of recurrent neural networks. Inspired by the recent success of deep reinforcement learning methods, in this paper we propose a new reinforcement learning formulation for the problem of human pose prediction, and develop an imitation learning algorithm for predicting future poses under this formulation through a combination of behavioral cloning and generative adversarial imitation learning. Our experiments show that our proposed method outperforms all existing state-of-the-art baseline models by large margins on the task of human pose prediction in both short-term predictions and long-term predictions, while also enjoying huge advantage in training speed., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted to ICCV 2019

In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised representation learning by taking advantage of a neighborhood-relational encoding (NRE) among the training data. Conventional unsupervised learning methods only focused on training deep networks to understand the primitive characteristics of the visual data, mainly to be able to reconstruct the data from a latent space. They often neglected the relation among the samples, which can serve as an important metric for self-supervision. Different from the previous work, NRE aims at preserving the local neighborhood structure on the data manifold. Therefore, it is less sensitive to outliers. We integrate our NRE component with an encoder-decoder structure for learning to represent samples considering their local neighborhood information. Such discriminative and unsupervised representation learning scheme is adaptable to different computer vision tasks due to its independence from intense annotation requirements. We evaluate our proposed method for different tasks, including classification, detection, and segmentation based on the learned latent representations. In addition, we adopt the auto-encoding capability of our proposed method for applications like defense against adversarial example attacks and video anomaly detection. With recent advances in deep learning, neuroimaging studies increasingly rely on convolutional networks (ConvNets) to predict diagnosis based on MR images. To gain a better understanding of how a disease impacts the brain, the studies visualize the salience maps of the ConvNet highlighting voxels within the brain majorly contributing to the prediction. However, these salience maps are generally confounded, i.e., some salient regions are more predictive of confounding variables (such as age) than the diagnosis. To avoid such misinterpretation, we propose in this paper an approach that aims to visualize confounder-free saliency maps that only highlight voxels predictive of the diagnosis. The approach incorporates univariate statistical tests to identify confounding effects within the intermediate features learned by ConvNet. The influence from the subset of confounded features is then removed by a novel partial back-propagation procedure. We use this two-step approach to visualize confounder-free saliency maps extracted from synthetic and two real datasets. These experiments reveal the potential of our visualization in producing unbiased model-interpretation.

In this paper, we study the problem of procedure planning in instructional videos, which can be seen as a step towards enabling autonomous agents to plan for complex tasks in everyday settings such as cooking. Given the current visual observation of the world and a visual goal, we ask the question "What actions need to be taken in order to achieve the goal?". The key technical challenge is to learn structured and plannable state and action spaces directly from unstructured videos. We address this challenge by proposing Dual Dynamics Networks (DDN), a framework that explicitly leverages the structured priors imposed by the conjugate relationships between states and actions in a learned plannable latent space. We evaluate our method on real-world instructional videos. Our experiments show that DDN learns plannable representations that lead to better planning performance compared to existing planning approaches and neural network policies., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Chest X-ray radiography is one of the earliest medical imaging technologies and remains one of the most widely-used for diagnosis, screening, and treatment follow up of diseases related to lungs and heart. The literature in this field of research reports many interesting studies dealing with the challenging tasks of bone suppression and organ segmentation but performed separately, limiting any learning that comes with the consolidation of parameters that could optimize both processes. This study, and for the first time, introduces a multitask deep learning model that generates simultaneously the bone-suppressed image and the organ-segmented image, enhancing the accuracy of tasks, minimizing the number of parameters needed by the model and optimizing the processing time, all by exploiting the interplay between the network parameters to benefit the performance of both tasks. The architectural design of this model, which relies on a conditional generative adversarial network, reveals the process on how the well-established pix2pix network (image-to-image network) is modified to fit the need for multitasking and extending it to the new image-to-images architecture. The developed source code of this multitask model is shared publicly on Github as the first attempt for providing the two-task pix2pix extension, a supervised/paired/aligned/registered image-to-images translation which would be useful in many multitask applications. Dilated convolutions are also used to improve the results through a more effective receptive field assessment. The comparison with state-of-the-art algorithms along with ablation study and a demonstration video are provided to evaluate efficacy and gauge the merits of the proposed approach.

To evaluate the cyclic behavior under different loading conditions using the kinematic and isotropic hardening theory of steel, a Chaboche viscoplastic material model is employed. The parameters of a constitutive model are usually identified by minimization of the difference between model response and experimental data. However, measurement errors and differences in the specimens lead to deviations in the determined parameters. In this article, the Choboche model is used and a stochastic simulation technique is applied to generate artificial data which exhibit the same stochastic behavior as experimental data. Then the model parameters are identified by applying an estimation using Bayes's theorem. The Transitional Markov Chain Monte Carlo method (TMCMC) is introduced and employed to estimate the model parameters in the Bayesian setting. The uniform distributions of the parameters representing their priors are considered which literally means no knowledge of the parameters is available. Identified parameters are compared with the true parameters in the simulation, and the efficiency of the identification method is discussed. Predicting the future is an important aspect for decision-making in robotics or autonomous driving systems, which heavily rely upon visual scene understanding. While prior work attempts to predict future video pixels, anticipate activities or forecast future scene semantic segments from segmentation of the preceding frames, methods that predict future semantic segmentation solely from the previous frame RGB data in a single end-to-end trainable model do not exist. In this paper, we propose a temporal encoder-decoder network architecture that encodes RGB frames from the past and decodes the future semantic segmentation. The network is coupled with a new knowledge distillation training framework specific for the forecasting task. Our method, only seeing preceding video frames, implicitly models the scene segments while simultaneously accounting for the object dynamics to infer the future scene semantic segments. While unsupervised variational autoencoders (VAE) have become a powerful tool in neuroimage analysis, their application to supervised learning is under-explored. We aim to close this gap by proposing a unified probabilistic model for learning the latent space of imaging data and performing supervised regression. Based on recent advances in learning disentangled representations, the novel generative process explicitly models the conditional distribution of latent representations with respect to the regression target variable. Performing a variational inference procedure on this model leads to joint regularization between the VAE and a neural-network regressor. In predicting the age of 245 subjects from their structural Magnetic Resonance (MR) images, our model is more accurate than state-of-the-art methods when applied to either region-of-interest (ROI) measurements or raw 3D volume images. More importantly, unlike simple feed-forward neural-networks, disentanglement of age in latent representations allows for intuitive interpretation of the structural developmental patterns of the human brain.

The design of single-molecule photoswitchable emitters was the first milestone toward the advent of single-molecule localization microscopy that sets a new paradigm in the field of optical imaging. Several photoswitchable emitters have been developed but they all fluoresce in the visible or far-red ranges, missing the desirable near-infrared window where biological tissues are most transparent. Moreover, photocontrol of individual emitters in the near-infrared would be highly desirable for elementary optical molecular switches or information storage elements since most communication data transfer protocols are established in this spectral range. Here we introduce a novel type of hybrid nanomaterials consisting of single-wall carbon nanotubes covalently functionalized with photo-switching molecules that are used to control the intrinsic luminescence of the single nanotubes in the near-infrared (beyond 1 $\mu$m). We provide proof-of-concept of localization microscopy based on these bright photoswitchable near-infrared emitters.

Variation Autoencoder (VAE) has become a powerful tool in modeling the non-linear generative process of data from a low-dimensional latent space. Recently, several studies have proposed to use VAE for unsupervised clustering by using mixture models to capture the multi-modal structure of latent representations. This strategy, however, is ineffective when there are outlier data samples whose latent representations are meaningless, yet contaminating the estimation of key major clusters in the latent space. This exact problem arises in the context of resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) analysis, where clustering major functional connectivity patterns is often hindered by heavy noise of rs-fMRI and many minor clusters (rare connectivity patterns) of no interest to analysis. In this paper we propose a novel generative process, in which we use a Gaussian-mixture to model a few major clusters in the data, and use a non-informative uniform distribution to capture the remaining data. We embed this truncated Gaussian-Mixture model in a Variational AutoEncoder framework to obtain a general joint clustering and outlier detection approach, called tGM-VAE. We demonstrated the applicability of tGM-VAE on the MNIST dataset and further validated it in the context of rs-fMRI connectivity analysis.

Various applications in different fields, such as gene expression analysis or computer vision, suffer from data sets with high-dimensional low-sample-size (HDLSS), which has posed significant challenges for standard statistical and modern machine learning methods. In this paper, we propose a novel linear binary classifier, denoted by population-guided large margin classifier (PGLMC), which is applicable to any sorts of data, including HDLSS. PGLMC is conceived with a projecting direction w given by the comprehensive consideration of local structural information of the hyperplane and the statistics of the training samples. Our proposed model has several advantages compared to those widely used approaches. First, it is not sensitive to the intercept term b. Second, it operates well with imbalanced data. Third, it is relatively simple to be implemented based on Quadratic Programming. Fourth, it is robust to the model specification for various real applications. The theoretical properties of PGLMC are proven. We conduct a series of evaluations on two simulated and six real-world benchmark data sets, including DNA classification, digit recognition, medical image analysis, and face recognition. PGLMC outperforms the state-of-the-art classification methods in most cases, or at least obtains comparable results.
