Abstract

Corneal epithelial defects are a common cause of ocular morbidity and can result in corneal scarring if they do not heal properly. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are extracellular matrix proteinases that regulate multiple aspects of corneal repair. We have previously shown that MMP12 has a protective effect on corneal fibrosis through its regulation of neutrophil and macrophage infiltration and angiogenesis in a chemical injury model involving full thickness damage to the cornea. However, the role of MMP12 in injuries limited to the corneal epithelium is relatively unknown. This study investigates the reparative effects of MMP12 following isolated corneal epithelial injury. Using a corneal epithelial debridement injury model performed on corneas of wild-type (WT) mice, we show that Mmp12 is expressed early following corneal epithelial injury with highest expression levels at 8 h after injury and lower expression levels at 4 and 8 days after injury. We investigated whether MMP12 has an effect on the rate of epithelial repair and cell migration using in vivo and in vitro scratch assays performed on WT and Mmp12-/- mice. We found that loss of MMP12 results in a slower scratch wound repair rate both in vivo and in vitro. We also found that corneas of Mmp12-/- mice have decreased neutrophil infiltration following injury. Loss of MMP12, however, does not affect cell proliferation in the center of the wounds. These data support a role of MMP12 in promoting early repair processes following corneal epithelial injury by enhancing epithelial cell migration and neutrophil infiltration.

Detecting and isolating these active biomolecules from plant extracts necessitates analytical techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The active biomolecules within plant extracts contain heteroatoms within their structures, facilitating their adsorption on steel surfaces and conferring corrosion inhibition properties. The advantages of plant extracts as green corrosion inhibitors include ready availability, ease of application, eco-friendly characteristics, and cost-effectiveness. These extracts adhere to steel surfaces, blocking their active sites and effectively reducing the corrosion rate. This review consolidates the findings on the corrosion inhibition potential of plant extracts from various plant parts, elucidating their performance in different concentrations of sulfuric acid. Abstract

In this work we report the hydrothermal method for the synthesis of NiTiO3 perovskite nanoparticles (NPs). The influence of reaction time variation (6 h, 12 h, 18 h and 24 h) on the synthesis of NiTiO3 NPs was studied. The synthesized material with variation in reaction time was characterized by various characterization methods like UV-Visible Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Selected area electron diffraction (SAED). Band gaps of the material synthesized by varying reaction time were studied and it was found that band gap decreases on increase in reaction time. The various structural parameters of the NiTiO3 like crystallite size, dislocation density and microstrain were calculated from XRD data. From the FESEM analysis, average particle size was estimated and found to increase in the range of 32 nm to 37 nm as reaction time increased from 6 h to 24 h. The electrical properties of the material were studied. The gas sensing performance of NiTiO3 thick films was tested on static gas sensing unit for various gases such as H2S, CO, CO2, Cl2, NH3, Ethanol and LPG. It showed maximum response to CO2 gas at room temperature (RT) for sample synthesized at 24 h reaction time which is attributed to the disappearance of TiO2 phases. Abstract

Background:The hip joint is a large weight-bearing joint with high mobility that can be involved in a variety of pathological disorders. These include anomalies caused by trauma, infection, avascular necrosis, neoplastic involvement, and synovial-based diseases. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the sensitivity and specificity of MRI in diagnosing AVN. 2. To correlate the features of AVN in conventional radiography and MRI. MATERIAL & METHODS: Study Design: A prospective hospital-based observational study. Study area: Department of Radio Diagnosis, Subbaiah Institute of medical sciences, Shivamogga, Karnataka. Study Period: 1 year. Study population: Patients who present with complaints of pain in the hip joint, restricted hip joint movements and suspected clinically to be AVN are referred fromthe Department of Orthopaedics to the Department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging. Sample size: The study consisted of 60 subjects. Sampling method: Simple random technique. Results: Sensitivity of X-ray in diagnosing AVN in early stages (Stage I and II) is less than that of MR imaging i.e.33% and 77.8%, but in late stages (Stage III and IV) both show equal sensitivity i.e. 100%. CONCLUSION:The study shows that MRI of the hip joint provides an informative, diagnostic, non-invasive, quick, and accurate imaging technique for assessing hip pain and identifying various hip joint pathologies. Abstract

Polymers, rubber, carbon black, nanomaterials, and other substances are frequently used for producing modified asphalt binders, which strengthen their ability to withstand fluctuating temperatures and growing vehicular loads. In order to achieve the intended performance, crosslinking agents/additives are frequently utilized to enhance the compatibility of various modifiers with the asphalt binder. This literature review paper provides a discussion on the use of different crosslinking agents, such as sulfur, dithiodimorpholine (DTDM), tetraethyl thiuram disulfide (TETDS), polyphosphoric acid (PPA), trans-polyoctenamer rubber (TOR), and peroxide, in the formulation of modified asphalt binder with different polymers, such as styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), and polyethylene (PE), as well as different rubber modifiers, such as styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), crumb rubber (CR), and ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer (EPDM) rubber. The fundamental concepts of the chemistry of modified asphalt binder are covered first, and then various crosslinking additives/agents and their effects on the storage stability/compatibility and chemical and rheological properties of modified asphalt binder are reviewed. The environmental effects of using these crosslinking agents with modified asphalt binders are also covered in the present work. Abstract

A comprehensive LC-MS/MS method, which employs Positive Electrospray Ionization (PEI) and Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) was developed for the simultaneous determination of 35 pesticides belonging to various chemical classes in tomato, brinjal, chili, and okra samples. Extraction was facilitated using a modified QuEChERS method, which allows efficient sample analysis in a single run. Calibration curves for each pesticide exhibited linearity within the concentration range of 0.0025 to 0.1 µg mL−1, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.993 to 0.999. Mean recoveries at five fortification levels (0.01 to 0.5 µg kg−1) ranged from 80 to 90%, demonstrating satisfactory precision (RSD < 20%). The matrix effects, mitigated through an optimized cleanup process, were observed within the range of 6.42% to 19.52%. The developed method having the limit of quantification of 0.01 mg kg−1 for all 35 pesticides, proved to be highly sensitive and rapid for multi-residue estimation in diverse vegetable samples. Subsequently, the method was used to analyze the market samples from Varanasi, India, which revealed the presence of pesticides like Chlorpyrifos, Chlorantraniliproleand Indoxacarb in tomato, brinjal, chili and okra. Therefore, the method could be considered as a robust tool for monitoring pesticide residues in vegetables, aiding in quality assessment and regulatory compliance in the agriculture sector.
