Resumo O processo de atenuação de lignificação por 2,4-D (ácido 2,4-diclorofenoxiacético) mostrou-se eficiente atenuando o metabolismo da formação da lignina. As células em suspensão de Eucalyptus urophylla foram produzidas em meio MS líquido suplementado com cinco diferentes tratamentos de 2,4-D (T1: 1 mg/L; T2: 2 mg/L; T3: 4 mg/L; T4: 5 mg/L; T5: 0 mg/L) sem agentes antioxidantes. Através da espectrometria de infravermelho e de ultravioleta foi verificado que as células acumularam diferentes quantidades de lignina. O tratamento 2 com 2 mg/L de 2,4-D promoveu o menor acúmulo de lignina (7 mg/L), ao contrário do tratamento 5 sem 2,4-D, que apresentou o mais alto teor dessa substância (220 mg/L).

Abstract Background Households of children with tuberculosis (TB) experience financial and social hardships, but TB-specific social protection initiatives primarily focus on adults. Methods We conducted a single-arm, pilot study of multi-component supportive benefits for children with pulmonary TB in Kampala, Uganda. At diagnosis, participants received in-kind coverage of direct medical costs, a cash transfer, and patient navigation. Caregivers were surveyed before diagnosis and 2 months into TB treatment on social and financial challenges related to their child’s illness, including estimated costs, loss of income and dissaving practices. Results We included 368 children from 321 households. Pre-diagnosis, 80.1% of caregivers reported that their child’s illness negatively impacted household finances, 44.1% of caregivers missed work, and 24% engaged in dissaving practices. Catastrophic costs (> 20% annual income) were experienced by 18.4% (95% CI 13.7–24.0) of households. School disruption was common (25.6%), and 28% of caregivers were concerned their child was falling behind in development. Abstract Background Despite significant decline in the past two decades, malaria is still a major public health concern in Tanzania; with over 93% of the population still at risk. Community knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP), and beliefs are key in enhancing uptake and utilization of malaria control interventions, but there is a lack of information on their contribution to effective control of the disease. This study was undertaken to determine KAP and beliefs of community members and service providers on malaria, and how they might be associated with increased risk and persistence of the disease burden in North-western and Southern regions of Tanzania. Methods This was an exploratory study that used qualitative methods including 16 in-depth interviews (IDI) and 32 focus group discussions (FGDs) to collect data from health service providers and community members, respectively. The study was conducted from September to October 2017 and covered 16 villages within eight districts from four regions of mainland Tanzania (Geita, Kigoma, Mtwara and Ruvuma) with persistently high malaria transmission for more than two decades. Results Most of the participants had good knowledge of malaria and how it is transmitted but some FGD participants did not know the actual cause of malaria, and thought that it is caused by bathing and drinking un-boiled water, or consuming contaminated food that has malaria parasites without warming it. Reported barriers to malaria prevention and control (by FGD and IDI participants) included shortage of qualified health workers, inefficient health financing, low care-seeking behaviour, consulting traditional healers, use of local herbs to treat malaria, poverty, increased breeding sites by socio-economic activities and misconceptions related to the use of bed nets and indoor residual spraying (IRS). Among the misconceptions, some participants believed that bed nets provided for free by the government came with bedbugs while others reported that free bed nets caused impotence among men. Conclusion Despite good knowledge of malaria, several risk factors, such as socio-economic and behavioural issues, and misconceptions related to the use of bed nets and IRS were reported. Other key factors included unavailability or limited access to health services, poor health financing and economic activities that potentially contributed to persistence of malaria burden in these regions. Relevant policies and targeted malaria interventions, focusing on understanding socio-cultural factors, should be implemented to reduce and finally eliminate the disease in the study regions and others with persistent transmission.

Metabolic diseases are major public health issues worldwide and are responsible for disproportionately higher healthcare costs and increased complications of many diseases including SARS-CoV-2 infection. The Western Diet (WD) specifically is believed to be a major contributor to the global metabolic disease epidemic. In contrast, the Mediterranean diet (MeD), Ketogenic diet (KD), and Japanese diet (JD) are often considered beneficial for metabolic health. Yet, there is a growing appreciation that the effect of diet on metabolic health varies depending on several factors including host genetics. Additionally, poor metabolic health has also been attributed to altered gut microbial composition and/or function. To understand the complex relationship between host genetics, gut microbiota, and dietary patterns, we treated four widely used metabolically diverse inbred mouse strains (A/J, C57BL/6J, FVB/NJ, and NOD/ShiLtJ) with four human-relevant diets (MeD, JD, KD, WD), and a control mouse chow from 6 weeks to 30 weeks of age. We found that diet-induced alteration of gut microbiota (α-diversity, β-diversity, and abundance of several bacteria including Bifidobacterium, Ruminococcus, Turicibacter, Faecalibaculum, and Akkermansia) is significantly modified by host genetics. In addition, depending on the gut microbiota, the same diet could have different metabolic health effects. Our study also revealed that C57BL/6J mice are more susceptible to altered gut microbiota compared to other strains in this study indicating that host genetics is an important modulator of the diet-microbiota-metabolic health axis. Overall, our study demonstrated complex interactions between host genetics, gut microbiota, and diet on metabolic health; indicating the need to consider both host genetics and the gut microbiota in the development of new and more effective precision nutrition strategies to improve metabolic health.

Metagenomic studies of mosquito viromes demonstrated a more diverse composition than just an exclusive composition of pathogenic arboviruses transmitted to humans. In our study, the virome of 866 female mosquitoes collected throughout 2020 at the São Paulo Zoo, located in the city of São Paulo/SP—Brazil, was obtained. Specifically, in this paper, we describe a new virus found by viral RNA extraction and next-generation MiSeq sequencing of a group of 23 specimens of Anopheles (Nys.) strodei. The complete genome with a length of 9709 nucleotides was characterized by a positive orientation and a single strand, with a single large ORF, which encodes a polyprotein of 2987 amino acids. The phylogenetic analysis showed an association with the viral family Iflaviridae and the Riboviria realm. We carried out comparisons with translated sequences of the capsid regions of other iflavirus, and the identities in relation to our sequence were below the minimum limit of 90%, indicating that possibly it is a new species of iflavirus. Our findings contribute to expanding knowledge of virome composition among mosquito species in Brazil and globally. Moreover, we provide a viral genome reference specific to this geographic region and Culicidae family of mosquitoes. This resource facilitates future in silico recognition and assembly of viral genomes within metagenomic datasets.

Lattice structures are a prime candidate for applications in the medical implant industry due to their versatile mechanical behaviour, which can be tailored to meet specific patient needs and reduce stress shielding, while enabling the natural flow of body fluids. In this work, the mechanical properties of metallic lattices made of five different unit cell types, Cubic (C), Truncated Octahedron (TO), Truncated Cubic (TC), Rhombicuboctahedron (RCO), and Rhombitruncated Cuboctahedron (RTCO), were evaluated under uniaxial compression at three different relative densities, 5%, 15%, and 45%. The evaluation was experimental, and it was compared with previous and new finite element simulations. Specimens for the experimental tests were fabricated in stainless steel 316L by laser powder bed fusion, and stress–strain curves were obtained for the different lattices. The combination of the test results with a critical interpretation of the deformation mechanisms allowed us to confirm that two unit cell types, TO and RTCO, are stable for the whole range of relative densities evaluated. The other three unit cells exhibit more unpredictable behaviour, either due to manufacturing defects or limitations, or because their unstable compression behaviour leads to bucking. For these reasons, TO and RTCO unit cell types are mechanically more adequate for applications in the medical implant industry.

The epidemiology and characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 in the hospitalized Mozambican pediatric population are scarce. We aimed to assess the burden of COVID-19 in the pediatric population at Hospital Central de Maputo and identify comorbidities and factors associated with death among hospitalized COVID-19 cases. A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2020 to October 2022. Available records were retrieved from admission books. Univariate and bivariate analyses were reported to describe the sample characteristics. The frequency of pediatric cases admitted with COVID-19 was 0.6% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.5–0.6; 364/63,753), and the frequency of pediatric cases hospitalized with COVID-19 was 2.5% (95% CI: 2.2–2.9; 173/6807). The monthly frequency of pediatric cases admitted and hospitalized with COVID-19 ranged from 0.1% to 5.4% and from 0.2% to 42.1%, respectively. In children hospitalized with COVID-19, underweight was the most observed comorbidity (17.4%; 19/109); death was observed in 30% (95% CI: 22.2–39.1; 33/110), and it was significantly higher in underweight children than in non-underweight children (61.5% [8/13] vs. 21.3% [16/75]; p-value = 0.005). Given the heightened risk of mortality among undernourished children compared to non-undernourished children, vaccination for COVID-19 should be prioritized for undernourished children.

Mozambique introduced the Rotarix® vaccine into the National Immunization Program in September 2015. Following vaccine introduction, rotavirus A (RVA) genotypes, G9P[4] and G9P[6], were detected for the first time since rotavirus surveillance programs were implemented in the country. To understand the emergence of these strains, the whole genomes of 47 ELISA RVA positive strains detected between 2015 and 2018 were characterized using an Illumina MiSeq-based sequencing pipeline. Of the 29 G9 strains characterized, 14 exhibited a typical Wa-like genome constellation and 15 a DS-1-like genome constellation. Mostly, the G9P[4] and G9P[6] strains clustered consistently for most of the genome segments, except the G- and P-genotypes. For the G9 genotype, the strains formed three different conserved clades, separated by the P type (P[4], P[6] and P[8]), suggesting different origins for this genotype. Analysis of the VP6-encoding gene revealed that seven G9P[6] strains clustered close to antelope and bovine strains. A rare E6 NSP4 genotype was detected for strain RVA/Human-wt/MOZ/HCN1595/2017/G9P[4] and a genetically distinct lineage IV or OP354-like P[8] was identified for RVA/Human-wt/MOZ/HGJM0644/2015/G9P[8] strain. These results highlight the need for genomic surveillance of RVA strains detected in Mozambique and the importance of following a One Health approach to identify and characterize potential zoonotic strains causing acute gastroenteritis in Mozambican children.

Contribution: In this article, an experience applying three role-playing games in the context of an Entrepreneurship final project is presented, discussing the challenges, and the lessons learned. Background: Soft skills have been expounded repeatedly as a crucial factor to thrive in the workplace, as opposed to mere knowledge of content only, since the increasingly importance of practitioners being able to adapt to new situations. Also, soft skills have the ability to categorize specific career attribute which an individual has, such as team spirit, written and oral communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Literature provides evidence of areas in which graduates most frequently do not meet industry expectations, including technical and also soft skills. Intended Outcomes: Considering the aforementioned scenario, an active learning strategy was adopted aiming to foster soft skills, particularly, oral communication, and negotiation in an Entrepreneurship course. Application Design: The course final project comprised the development of fictional business plans, their corresponding minimum viable products, and also negotiation rounds with fictional potential investors. Among the active learning strategies, role-playing games were chosen as they have shown to be useful in similar contexts. Findings: This experience shows that active strategies, especially role-playing games, support the development of soft skills and engage students as active participants in their learning process.

Contribution: This study presents the results of a systematic mapping on the classification and organization of open educational resources (OERs) focused on Computer Science Education (CSEd) in digital sources. Background: The number of open resources (e.g., images, videos, and websites) available on the Internet for the teaching of Computer Science has increased in recent years. As a consequence, several authors have proposed different ways of classifying them, which include lists of disciplines, classification algorithms, and semantic enrichment. However, such studies are dispersed and fragmented in the literature, making the current state-of-the-art unclear. Research Questions: (1) What digital sources have been used to classify OERs for CSEd? (2) What CSEd domains have been explored for the classification of OERs? and (3) What approaches have been adopted for the classification of OERs for CSEd? Methodology: Three search strategies were performed: (1) automatic search in the five major digital libraries of CSEd; (2) manual search in the major CSEd conferences and journals; and (3) snowballing on the references and citations. As a result, 22 relevant studies were selected. Findings: The main findings were systematization of the main OER sources for CSEd, identification of 64 CSEd domains covered by OERs organized in a taxonomy, the immaturity level of investigations and tools, and lack of mechanisms that organize OERs for CSEd.

BackgroundPediatric tuberculosis (TB), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and TB-HIV co-infection are health problems with evidence-based diagnostic and treatment algorithms that can reduce morbidity and mortality. Implementation and operational barriers affect adherence to guidelines in many resource-constrained settings, negatively affecting patient outcomes. This study aimed to assess performance in the pediatric HIV and TB care cascades in Mozambique.MethodsA retrospective analysis of routine PEPFAR site-level HIV and TB data from 2012 to 2016 was performed. Patients 0-14 years of age were included. Descriptive statistics were used to report trends in TB and HIV indicators. Linear regression was done to assess associations of site-level variables with performance in the pediatric TB and HIV care cascades using 2016 data.ResultsRoutine HIV testing and cotrimoxazole initiation for co-infected children in the TB program were nearly optimal at 99% and 96% in 2016, respectively. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation was lower at 87%, but steadily improved from 2012 to 2016. From the HIV program, TB screening at the last consultation rose steadily over the study period, reaching 82% in 2016. The percentage of newly enrolled children who received either TB treatment or isoniazid preventive treatment (IPT) also steadily improved in all provinces, but in 2016 was only at 42% nationally. This paper is based on a study that examined authorship and collaborative research among scholars in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions with a focus on prospects for Africa. The study involved intensive documentary desk review of conference book of abstracts and conference proceedings to examine authorship and collaborative research. The study reviewed a total of 10 conference books of abstracts and proceedings organized or hosted by universities including ODL institutions in Africa. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise some thematic areas of interest. It is revealed in this paper that authorship in terms of co-authorship is high in some conferences but low in others in relation to collaborative research. Furthermore, authorship between two scholars was higher compared to three or more authors in collaborative research. This implies that co-authorship is trending in relation to collaborative research thus raising collaboration prospects for Africa. It is therefore recommended that ODL scholars should be encouraged to do more co-author publications from collaborative research in order to promote teamwork and comparative studies in knowledge production for socio-economic development relevant for Africa and beyond.

Abstract Presurgical psychopathological assessment usually focuses on detecting severe mental disorders. However, mild intensity psychopathology and eating behaviour pattern may also influence postsurgical outcomes. The aim was to identify psychopathology and eating behaviour pattern in candidates prepared for bariatric surgery compared to a normative population before and after surgery. A cohort of 32 patients seeking bariatric surgery in a university hospital between March 2016 and March 2017 were evaluated with Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), 36‐item EDE‐Q and BES before and after surgery. Abstract Objective: To investigate whether the combined consumption of fresh/minimally processed and ultra-processed food is associated with food insecurity (FI) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Cross-sectional observational study was derived from a survey using a population-based search of a complex sample. FI was assessed using the validated Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale. Food consumption was assessed using a qualitative FFQ and the NOVA classification for fresh/minimally processed food and ultra-processed food. A scoring system was used to evaluate combined food consumption according to the extent and purpose of processing, considering the weekly consumption of the two groups (according to the NOVA classification). Higher punctuation reflects worse diet quality (higher consumption of ultra-processed foods and lower consumption of fresh/minimally processed foods). A theoretical causality model was constructed using a directed acyclic graph, and multivariate analysis was performed using Poisson regression to test the association between FI and food consumption. Setting: Ouro Preto and Mariana, Brazil, between October and December 2020. Participants: An epidemiological household survey was conducted with 1753 individuals selected through a stratified and clustered sampling design in three stages. Results: Those with food consumption scores in the fourth quartile had a 60 % higher prevalence ratio (PR) for FI (PR: 1·60 and 95 % CI: 1·06 - 2·40). Also, the increased consumption of fresh/minimally processed foods and low consumption of ultra-processed foods presented a 45 % lower prevalence ratio of FI (PR: 0·55 and 95 % CI: 0·40 – 0·80). Conclusion: These results indicate an inverse association between FI and diet quality.
