Abstract

Microplastic pollution is increasingly recognised as a global environmental challenge which stems from the rapid growth of the use of petrochemical-derived plastic. As researchers and practitioners face a myriad of environmental challenges, oceanic microplastic pollution has so far dominated interest. However, airborne microplastics present an increasing environmental and public health concern. There is currently a need for research addressing this emerging challenge, and at the same time, the lack of knowledge and consensus regarding airborne microplastics presents an obstacle to action. The purpose of this study is to utilise a participatory Structured Decision-Making (SDM) approach to understand the perspectives of a range of stakeholders involved in the microplastics landscape, and subsequently refine common research priorities and knowledge gaps to advance the field. Through two participatory workshops, we first defined shared objectives of stakeholders and then negotiated best courses of action to achieve these objectives based on discussion between stakeholders and facilitators. The qualitative approach taken has enabled the full, complex and multidisciplinary aspects of the research into airborne microplastic pollution to be considered. Our findings highlight some important potential consequences of airborne microplastic pollution, including impacts on human health, and the need for more interdisciplinary research, and collaborative, integrated approaches in this area. As a result of the first workshop, five fundamental objectives on the theme of airborne microplastics were identified. As a direct consequence of this, participants identified 84 actions split across eight themes, which are outlined later in this paper.

Abstract

Economic and financial forecasts are important for business planning and government policy but are notoriously challenging. We take advantage of recent advances in individual and group judgement, and a data set of economic and financial forecasts compiled over 25 years, consisting of multiple individual and institutional estimates, to test the claim that nominal groups will make more accurate economic and financial forecast than individuals. We validate the forecasts using the subsequent published (real) outcomes, explore the performance of nominal groups against institutions, identify potential superforecasters and discuss the benefits of implementing structured judgment techniques to improve economic and financial forecasts.

Abstract

The Avicenna Public & Patient Involvement (PPI) task force present their first position paper with focus on assessing the status quo and proposing an action plan for establishing PPI within in silico medicine. While PPI has gained significant momentum in the wider biomedical community, it is currently underserved in the in silico medicine domain. The task force therefore aims to create awareness, support implementation, and enable a culture change within the in silico medicine community to maximise societal impact together with patients and the public. This position paper shall serve as a beacon for establishing the PPI task force within the AA and beyond.

Abstract

To better understand the PPI maturity level among AA members before tailoring PPI activities, the PPI TF decided to conduct an AA-internal surveyto identify current PPI practices and perceptions within the AA to serve as a guide to the newly established PPI TF for improved targeting of future content and activities in an evidence-based approach. As a secondary aim, the survey was intended to help raise PPI awareness within the AA by catalysing conversations about the topic.

Abstract

The movement and dispersal of animals between populations is an important component of wildlife ecology and has been described as “the glue that holds local populations together.” Without adequate ability to disperse, the rate of movement of individuals and DNA between populations is reduced and these populations become isolated, increasing the risk of local extinction. Most research addressing the barrier effect of roads and traffic has focussed on the use of crossing structures by wildlife. Our study is a first for Australia and represents a unique collaboration to quantify the barrier effect in a highly fragmented landscape and (subsequently) the success of mitigation. The aims of the project are to use genetic techniques and empirical observations to quantify the barrier effect of roads on the movement and dispersal of mammals, reptiles, birds, and invertebrates and to assess the effectiveness of structures and road designs intended to mitigate the barrier effect. Quantitative modeling will also be implemented to predict the effects of reduced movement on population viability. A range of genetic markers is available for use in population biology to measure dispersal. Microsatellites are hypervariable and sensitive enough to be able to detect genetic differentiation in the short term and at small spatial scales, and are therefore appropriate to investigate genetic substructuring due to the presence of roads. Genetic analyses will be used at different scales of resolution. The genic approach will be employed for identifying population substructuring and patterns of gene flow at the population level. The genotypic approach will be used for finer-scale observations of dispersal of individuals. Direct methods still provide highly reliable data on dispersal parameters, although they rely on logistically difficult field observations. Trapping and radio tracking will be used in the present project to be combined with and strengthen the results obtained from genetic analyses. Repeated trapping will provide life history information which can aid in understanding the genetic data and contribute to the population viability models. Radio tracking will be used to collect information on daily movements of mammals in relation to foraging as well as dispersal and to assess the effectiveness of mitigation structures. Finally, quantitative population modelling will be conducted to estimate the effects of inhibited dispersal on population viability. Data from observations and genetic studies will be used to characterise populations in terms of age and stage structures, fecundity, survival, and dispersal. Data collected over three years will be used to characterise variability in the parameters to improve population modelling.

283. Effects of climate change and water management on West Florida Shelf's dynamics

Abstract

In the present study we evaluated, in a high-resolution simulation (1.5 km), the separate and combined effects of freshwater discharge management and climate warming by 1 °C on the Loop Current (LC) intrusions on the West Florida Shelf (WFS) and its dynamics in the subtropical western Atlantic. Based on a one-year simulation in which an LC and its eddy intruded on the WFS, either the increase of freshwater discharge or the climate warming led to a change in the stratification properties of the WFS significant enough to affect the type of LC intrusions. Increased freshwater discharge contributed to the intensification of shelf water mixing that favors surface intrusion of LC waters. On the contrary, 1 °C warming led to increased shelf waters stratification that favors bottom intrusions. Either type of intrusion leads to a different oceanographic regime on the shelf to which the ecosystem might respond differently. Our study suggests, however, that increased freshwater discharge could mitigate the effect of climate warming on the WFS by reducing shelf waters stratification. The WFS response to cold air outbreaks that are common in the fall and winter months was also analyzed. It showed that under a warmer climate, the increased stratification due to the freshwater discharge at the end of the boreal summer wet season is cancelled by the warmer climate and reduces the available potential energy on the shelf, limiting coastal upwelling, instabilities, and shelf convection.

Abstract

ESSnuSB is a design study for an experiment to measure the CP violation in the leptonic sector at the second neutrino oscillation maximum using a neutrino beam driven by the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator. The reduced impact of systematic errors on sensitivity at the second maximum allows for a very precise measurement of the CP violating parameter. This review describes the fundamental advantages of measurement at the second maximum, the necessary upgrades to the ESS linac in order to produce a neutrino beam, the near and far detector complexes, and the expected physics reach of the proposed ESSnuSB experiment, concluding with the near future developments aimed at the project realization.

Abstract

Alterations in immune-related pathways are common hallmarks of cancer. A comprehensive understanding of how cancer mutations rewire immune signaling networks and functional output across cancer types is instrumental to realize the full potential of immunotherapy. Here, we systematically interrogated somatic mutations involved in immune signaling that alter immune responses in patients with cancer. To do so, we developed a Network-based Integrative model to Prioritize Potential immune respondER genes (NIPPER). Identified mutations were enriched in essential protein domains and genes identified by NIPPER were associated with responsiveness to multiple immunotherapy modalities. These genes were used to devise an interactome network propagation framework integrated with drug-associated gene signatures to identify potential immunomodulatory drug candidates. Together, our systems-level analysis results help interpret the heterogeneous immune responses among patients and serve as a resource for future functional studies and targeted therapeutics.Significance:This study demonstrates that integration of multi-omics data can help identify critical molecular determinants for effective targeted therapeutics.

300. Short term solutions to biodiversity conservation in portfolio construction: forward looking disclosure and taxonomy-based metrics

Abstract

Demand is increasing amongst investors to create portfolios that encourage positive outcomes for biological diversity. The evolution of investment strategies for transitions to zero carbon over the last two decades provides insights that will assist in shaping strategies for biodiversity-positive investments. Many emerging approaches to capture company impact and dependence on biodiversity focus on nature-related threats to an organisation by looking at the composition of local ecosystems and sustaining ecosystem services. Other approaches have a different objective function, focusing on minimizing an organisation’s contribution to risks of species extinction by using data sets such as the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. However, in both cases, many of the threat assessments that could link corporate activities to impacts are incomplete and omit critical information, and the models that use these links are largely untested for use in portfolio construction. If the investment community focuses on biodiversity without sufficient forethought, there is a risk of entrenching metrics with significant flaws. In this paper we suggest that until such time as species threat assessments are complete and the metrics to which they contribute are fully developed and tested for use, interim approaches to guide investments can leverage off disclosure-based or taxonomy-based approaches developed for climate investing. We present and discuss two potential such metrics, a Biodiversity Management Quality metric and a Biodiversity Revenues metric.
