We prove that the braid group $B_4$ on 4 strings, as well as its central quotient $B_4/< z>$, have the property RD of Haagerup-Jolissaint. It follows that the automorphism group $\Aut(F_2)$ of the free group $F_2$ on 2 generators has property RD. We also prove that the braid group $B_4$ is a group of intermediate rank (of dimension 3). Namely, we show that both $B_4$ and its central quotient have exponential mesoscopic rank, i.e., that they contain exponentially many large flat balls which are not included in flats., Comment: reference added, minor corrections

In self-gravitating stars, two dimensional or geophysical flows and in plasmas, long range interactions imply a lack of additivity for the energy; as a consequence, the usual thermodynamic limit is not appropriate. However, by contrast with many claims, the equilibrium statistical mechanics of such systems is a well understood subject. In this proceeding, we explain briefly the classical approach to equilibrium and non equilibrium statistical mechanics for these systems, starting from first principles. We emphasize recent and new results, mainly a classification of equilibrium phase transitions, new unobserved equilibrium phase transition, and out of equilibrium phase transitions. We briefly discuss what we consider as challenges in this field.

We introduce concepts of intermediate rank for countable groups that "interpolate" between consecutive values of the classical (integer-valued) rank. Various classes of groups are proved to have intermediate rank behaviors. We are especially interested in interpolation between rank 1 and rank 2. For instance, we construct groups "of rank 7/4". Our setting is essentially that of non positively curved spaces, where concepts of intermediate rank include polynomial rank, local rank, and mesoscopic rank. The resulting framework has interesting connections to operator algebras. We prove property RD in many cases where intermediate rank occurs. This gives a new family of groups satisfying the Baum-Connes conjecture. We prove that the reduced $C^*$-algebras of groups of rank 7/4 have stable rank 1.

We present a complete analytical solution of a system of Potts spins on a random k-regular graph in both the canonical and microcanonical ensembles, using the Large Deviation Cavity Method (LDCM). The solution is shown to be composed of three different branches, resulting in an non-concave entropy function.The analytical solution is confirmed with numerical Metropolis and Creutz simulations and our results clearly demonstrate the presence of a region with negative specific heat and, consequently, ensemble inequivalence between the canonical and microcanonical ensembles., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

We address the problem of retrieving information from a noisy version of the ``knowledge networks'' introduced by Maslov and Zhang. We map this problem onto a disordered statistical mechanics model, which opens the door to many analytical and numerical approaches. A satisfiability (SAT-UNSAT) transition takes place for many optimization problems when the number of constraints, graphically represented by links between variables nodes, is brought above some threshold. If the network of constraints is allowed to adapt by redistributing its links, the SAT-UNSAT transition may be delayed and preceded by an intermediate phase where the structure self-organizes to satisfy the constraints. We present an analytic approach, based on the recently introduced cavity method for large deviations, which exactly describes the two phase transitions delimiting this adaptive intermediate phase. We give explicit results for random bond models subject to the connectivity or rigidity percolation transitions, and compare them with numerical simulations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

A generic feature of systems with long-range interactions is the presence of {\it quasi-stationary} states with non-Gaussian single particle velocity distributions. For the case of the Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model, we demonstrate that a maximum entropy principle applied to the associated Vlasov equation explains known features of such states for a wide range of initial conditions. We are able to reproduce velocity distribution functions with an analytical expression which is derived from the theory with no adjustable parameters. A normal diffusion of angles is detected and a new dynamical effect, two oscillating clusters surrounded by a halo, is also found and theoretically justified., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs, submitted to Phys. We consider a dynamical generalization of the Eshelby problem: the strain profile due to an inclusion or "defect" in an isotropic elastic medium. We show that the higher the oscillation frequency of the defect, the more localized is the strain field around the defect. We then demonstrate that the qualitative nature of the interaction between two defects is strongly dependent on separation, frequency and direction, changing from "ferromagnetic" to "antiferromagnetic" like behavior. We generalize to a finite density of defects and show that the interactions in assemblies of defects can be mapped to XY spin-like models, and describe implications for frustration and frequency-driven pattern transitions., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We prove the existence of a non-ergodicity threshold for an anisotropic classical Heisenberg model with all-to-all couplings. Below the threshold, the energy surface is disconnected in two components with positive and negative magnetizations respectively. Above, in a fully chaotic regime, magnetization changes sign in a stochastic way and its behavior can be fully characterized by an average magnetization reversal time. We show that statistical mechanics predicts a phase--transition at an energy higher than the non-ergodicity threshold. We assess the dynamical relevance of the latter for finite systems through numerical simulations and analytical calculations. In particular, the time scale for magnetic reversal diverges as a power law at the ergodicity threshold with a size-dependent exponent, which could be a signature of the phenomenon., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures

We present a simple model that enables us to analytically characterize a floppy to rigid transition and an associated self-adaptive intermediate phase in a random bond network. In this intermediate phase, the network adapts itself to lower the stress due to constraints. Our simulations verify this picture. We consider the links between nonlinear dynamics and thermodynamics in the framework of a simple nonlinear model for DNA. Two analyses of the phase transition, either with the transfer integral approach or by considering the instability of a nonlinear particular solution, are discussed. Conversely, the computation of the largest Lyapunov exponent is obtained within a thermodynamic treatment. Differences with the Peyrard-Bishop model are also discussed.

We consider spaces for which there is a notion of harmonicity for complex valued functions defined on them. For instance, this is the case of Riemannian manifolds on one hand, and (metric) graphs on the other hand. We observe that it is then possible to define an "amazing" notion of holomorphic functions on them, and show how rigid it is in some cases.

We discuss a method to solve models with long-range interactions in the microcanonical and canonical ensemble. The method closely follows the one introduced by Ellis, Physica D 133, 106 (1999), which uses large deviation techniques. We show how it can be adapted to obtain the solution of a large class of simple models, which can show ensemble inequivalence. The model Hamiltonian can have both discrete (Ising, Potts) and continuous (HMF, Free Electron Laser) state variables. This latter extension gives access to the comparison with dynamics and to the study of non-equilibri um effects. We treat both infinite range and slowly decreasing interactions and, in particular, we present the solution of the alpha-Ising model in one-dimension with $0\leq\alpha<1$.

We propose a new approach, based on statistical mechanics, to predict the saturated state of a single-pass, high-gain free-electron laser (FEL). In analogy with the violent relaxation process in self-gravitating systems and in the Euler equation of 2D turbulence, the initial relaxation of the laser can be described by the statistical mechanics of an associated Vlasov equation. The Laser field intensity and the electron bunching parameter reach quasi-stationary values that are well fitted by a Vlasov stationary state if the number of electrons $N$ is sufficiently large. Finite $N$ effects (granularity) finally drive the system to Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical equilibrium, but this occurs on times that are unphysical (i.e. excessively long undulators). All theoretical predictions are successfully tested in finite $N$ numerical experiments. Systems with long range interactions in general are not additive, which can lead to an inequivalence of the microcanonical and canonical ensembles. The microcanonical ensemble may show richer behavior than the canonical one, including negative specific heats and other non-common behaviors. We propose a classification of microcanonical phase transitions, of their link to canonical ones, and of the possible situations of ensemble inequivalence. We discuss previously observed phase transitions and inequivalence in self-gravitating, two-dimensional fluid dynamics and non-neutral plasmas. Mean-field models, while they can be cast into an {\it extensive} thermodynamic formalism, are inherently {\it non additive}. This is the basic feature which leads to {\it ensemble inequivalence} in these models. In this paper we study the global phase diagram of the infinite range Blume-Emery-Griffiths model both in the {\it canonical} and in the {\it microcanonical} ensembles. The microcanonical solution is obtained both by direct state counting and by the application of large deviation theory. The canonical phase diagram has first order and continuous transition lines separated by a tricritical point. We find that below the tricritical point, when the canonical transition is first order, the phase diagrams of the two ensembles disagree. In this region the microcanonical ensemble exhibits energy ranges with negative specific heat and temperature jumps at transition energies. These two features are discussed in a general context and the appropriate Maxwell constructions are introduced. We study the formation of coherent structures in a system with long-range interactions where particles moving on a circle interact through a repulsive cosine potential. Non equilibrium structures are shown to correspond to statistical equilibria of an effective dynamics, which is derived using averaging techniques. This simple behavior might be a prototype of others observed in more complicated systems with long-range interactions, like two-dimensional incompressible fluids or self-gravitating systems., Comment: 4 figures

We study an analytically tractable model with long-range interactions for which an out-of-equilibrium very long-lived coherent structure spontaneously appears. The dynamics of this model is indeed very peculiar: a bicluster forms at low energy and is stable for very long time, contrary to statistical mechanics predictions. We first explain the onset of the structure, by approximating the short time dynamics with a forced Burgers equation. The emergence of the bicluster is the signature of the shock waves present in the associated hydrodynamical equations. The striking quantitative agreement with the dynamics of the particles fully confirms this procedure. We then show that a very fast timescale can be singled out from a slower motion. This enables us to use an adiabatic approximation to derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes very well the long time dynamics. We then get an explanation of the very long time stability of the bicluster: this out-of-equilibrium state corresponds to a statistical equilibrium of an effective mean-field dynamics.

We study analytically the behavior of the largest Lyapunov exponent $\lambda_1$ for a one-dimensional chain of coupled nonlinear oscillators, by combining the transfer integral method and a Riemannian geometry approach.
