251. Television viewing in the family and the processes of communication, normative control and cohesion

Television research in the RSA has up to now been concerned mainly with the effect of television on the youth. The perspective in this study, however, moves to the family as a social context within which television viewing occurs. On the basis of a country-wide sample a number of White two-parent families, in which one of the children was a Std 8 pupil living permanently at home, were found. Schedules were developed and personal interviews were conducted with the mothers and their children. The findings indicated that the number of hours children devoted to watching television is related to the processes of family communication, normative control of television viewing in the family and family cohesion. The conclusion drawn from the study shows that although only a moderate amount of television viewing takes place in most families, it can still inhibit family communication unless parents deliberately encourage communication in their families.
