Şahin G, Düzcan-Kilimci D, Tanyıldız HG. Epidemiological features and risks of hemangiomas. Turk J Pediatr 2017; 59: 664-669. Hemangiomas are the most common benign tumors of childhood. The known risk factors in developing hemangiomas are female gender, prematurity and low birth weight. Our study was designed to investigate prenatal and natal risk factors in addition to the above factors that would potentially affect development of hemangiomas. Two hundred forty hemangioma patients and 100 healthy controls were included in the study. Both groups were interviewed for age, gender, prenatal characteristics (presence of maternal pregnancy hypotension, hypertension and hyperemesis, parental smoking habits) as well as natal characteristics (delivery, birth weight, gestational age) and maternal-paternal age. Hemangiomas were mostly localized in the head and neck. Risk of developing hemangioma was higher in girls and in firstlings. History of hyperemesis during pregnancy increased incidence of hemangioma. Post-term delivery was found to be protective against developing hemangioma. We are in the opinion that there is a need for wider studies with a bigger sample size so as to detect other risk factors.

Breast milk contributes towards optimal nutrition for infants. However, studies showed that it can also contain different toxins and heavy metals, which reduce its health benefits. The aim of this study is to determine the level of contaminants such as aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), Pb, Cd, As, and Hg in breast milk samples from Famagusta, Cyprus. Correlations between moldy food consumption, smoking habits of the mothers, and contaminant levels in breast milk were also investigated. Breast milk samples from 50 lactating mothers in rural and urban areas of Famagusta District were analyzed for AFM1 by ELISA. Eighty percent of them were found to be contaminated with AFM1 with the mean measurement of 7.84 ± 1.72 ng/l. Socio-demographic status, moldy food consumption habits, and smoking status do not have any effect on the AFM1 levels observed in breast milk. Heavy metal levels in breast milk were examined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and the mean measurements were1.19 ± 1.53 ppm for Pb, 0.73 ± 0.58 ppm for As, 0 ± 0.20 ppm for Hg, and 0.45 ± 0.23 ppm for Cd. This study indicates that the levels of these contaminants in breast milk samples obtained in Famagusta District are well within the acceptable levels. However, the presence of AFM1 and heavy metals still may pose risks for infant health.

Objective: Coagulation and fibrinolysis defects were reported in primary hyperparathyroid patients. However, there are not enough data regarding platelet functions in this group of patients. Our aim was to evaluate the platelet functions in primary and secondary hyperparathyroid patients and to compare them with healthy subjects., Materials and Methods: In our study 25 subjects with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), 25 subjects with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), and 25 healthy controls were included. Platelet functions of the subjects were evaluated by using platelet-rich plasma and platelet aggregation tests induced with epinephrine, adenosine diphosphate (ADP), collagen, and ristocetin. Serum P selectin levels, which indicate platelet activation level, were measured in all subjects. Bone mineral densitometry was performed for all patients., Results: There was no significant difference between the groups with PHPT and SHPT and the control group regarding the platelet aggregation tests and serum P selectin levels. There was also no significant correlation between parathormone levels and aggregation parameters (ristocetin, epinephrine, collagen, and ADP: respectively p=0.446, 0.537, 0.346, and 0.302) and between P selectin (p=0.516) levels. When we separated the patients according to serum calcium levels, there was also no significant difference between aggregation parameters and serum P selectin levels between the patients with hypercalcemia and the patients with normocalcemia. We could not find any significant correlation between aggregation parameters, P selectin levels, and serum calcium levels in this group of patients. Aim: To evaluate the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) and red cell distribution width (RDW), and disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA)., Patients & Methods: Hundred RA and 100 controls were included., Results: MPV and RDW were higher in RA (p < 0.0001). The cut-off levels of RDW and MPV were 14.8 and 10.4. Patients with RDW >14.8 had higher Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28; p = 0.002) and pain score (p = 0.0007). RDW was positively correlated with DAS28 and pain. But, DAS28 and pain were not different between patients with MPV >10.4 and <10.4., Conclusion: MPV and RDW were significantly higher in RA. RDW and MPV were similar to erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein to indicate inflammatory activity. RDW was correlated with pain and DAS28, but MPV was not associated with them.

The methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene plays a key role in carcinogenesis through its effects on DNA synthesis and methylation and also has a significant role in the etiology of many disorders, such as diabetes, migraine, and cardiovascular disease. Neurofibromatoses (NF) are autosomal dominant inherited diseases that can affect tissues such as bone and skin and predispose individuals to tumor development in various parts of the nervous system or body. Optic nerve glioma and brain tumors are common in children with NF, and leukemia and lymphoma incidence is also higher than normal. We therefore aimed to investigate the possible relationship between the MTHFR gene polymorphism and accompanying tumors such as neurofibroma, hamartoma, and optic glioma in children with NF1 found to have the MTHFR 677 and MTHFR 1298 gene polymorphism in this study. We included 55 pediatric patients diagnosed with NF1 between 2005 and 2014 in the study group. The control group included 44 healthy subjects without acute or chronic disease findings. A significant relationship was found between the MTHFR A1298C polymorphism and the incidence of optic glioma (p=0.014) (AA vs. AC: OR 11, 95% CI 1.27-95.17; AA vs. CC: OR 7.33, 95% CI 0.35-150.70). We also found a significant relationship between the MTHFR C1298C polymorphism and the incidence of hamartoma (p=0.019) (AA vs. AC: OR 2.12, 95% CI 0.662-6.809; p=0.203). Epilepsy incidence was high in subjects with MTHFR C677C. The MTHFR A1298C, C1298C, and C677C gene polymorphisms can be associated with a higher optic glioma, hamartoma, and epilepsy incidence, respectively, in patients diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1.

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis is a rare complication of long-term peritoneal dialysis ranging from moderate inflammation of peritoneal structures to severe sclerosing peritonitis and encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. Complicated it, ileus may occur during or after peritoneal dialysis treatment or after kidney transplant. We sought to evaluate 3 posttransplant encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis through clinical presentation, radiologic findings, and outcomes. We analyzed 3 renal transplant patients with symptoms of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis admitted posttransplant to our hospital with ileus between 2012 and 2013. Conservative treatment was applied to the patients whenever necessary to avoid surgery. One patient improved with medical therapy. Surgical treatment was delayed and we decided it as a last resort, in 2 cases with no response to conservative treatment for a long time. Finally, patients with peritoneal dialysis history should be searched carefully before renal transplant for intermittent bowel obstruction story.

Objectives: Dry eye is an important problem in Parkinson's disease (PD) with a potential to affect life quality. Tear osmolarity, accepted as the gold standard in dry eye diagnosis, has not been studied in this subset of patients so far. Therefore, in this study we aimed to evaluate tear osmolarity, Schirmer's test scores and tear film break-up time (TBUT) in PD patients., Ma­te­ri­als and Met­hods: PD patients with a minimum follow-up of 1 year and healthy controls who admitted for refractive abnormalities were enrolled to the study. Subjects using any systemic medication with a possibility to affect tear tests were not included in the study. The presence of any ocular surface disorder, previous ocular surgery, previous dry eye diagnosis, any topical ophthalmic medication or contact lens use were other exclusion criteria. Age, gender, disease duration, and Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) score for disease severity were noted, and blink rate (BR), Schirmer's test score, TBUT and tear osmolarity of the right eye were measured in both groups., Re­sults: Thirty-seven PD patients and 37 controls were enrolled to the study. The groups were age and gender matched. The mean disease duration and H&Y score were 5.70±2.64 years and 1.70±0.93, respectively. H&Y staging and disease duration were not correlated to BR, Schirmer's scores, TBUT, or tear osmolarity (p>0.05). The mean BR was 8.54±4.99 blinks/minute in PD patients and 11.97±6.36 blinks/minute in the control group. Mean Schirmer's scores, TBUT and osmolarity values were 9.08±4.46 mm, 11.38±4.05 seconds and 306.43±12.63 mOsm/L in the PD group and 17.16±9.57 mm, 12.81±3.66 seconds and 303.81±16.13 mOsm/L in the control group. The differences were significant only in BR and Schirmer's scores., Conclusion: BR and Schirmer's scores decreased significantly in PD patients. Although not significant, the demonstrated tear osmolarity increment might be important to document the dry eye and inflammatory process of the ocular surface in PD patients., Competing Interests: No conflict of interest was declared by the authors. Purpose: This study was undertaken to determine the effects of season and gender on serum aflatoxin (AF) levels (AFG1, AFB1, AFG2 and AFB2) and ochratoxin A (OTA) concentrations of healthy adult population living in Central Anatolia Region of Turkey., Methods: AF levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and OTA levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in serum samples of healthy adults (n = 233)., Results: In summer and winter, total AF levels in females were 0.98 ± 0.10 and 0.94 ± 0.12 ng/ml and in males 1.35 ± 0.17 and 0.93 ± 0.11 ng/ml, respectively. Male subjects had significantly higher serum total AF levels in summer compared with females (~38%). There was no marked seasonal change in AFG1, AFB1 and AFG2 concentrations in the whole population, except AFB2. Both of the genders had significantly higher OTA levels in winter compared with summer (~60%)., Conclusions: Overall results suggest that Central Anatolia residents are continuously exposed to AFs and OTA. Besides, season and gender can be effective in mycotoxin exposure.

Objective: We aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics and management of ten patients who were diagnosed with juvenile granulosa cell ovarian tumor (JGCOT)., Material and Methods: The records of 10 patients diagnosed with JGCOT between April 1995 and January 2014 in the Gynecological Oncology Clinic of our institution were retrospectively evaluated., Results: The median age of the patients was 21.5 years (range; 13-36). Nine patients had stage IA disease and one had stage IC disease according to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) criteria. Five patients underwent pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection. None of them had lymph node involvement. All but two patients underwent unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. One of the other two patients had cystectomy and the other had total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Three patients had adjuvant therapy after surgery. Two of these patients took chemotherapy and the other took radiotherapy. Four of the five patients who desired pregnancy achieved five term pregnancies. The median follow-up time of the patients was 58 months (range; 3-113). No recurrence was observed in the follow up period., Conclusion: JGCOT generally occurs during childhood. The primary management of JGCOT is through surgery. The role of adjuvant therapy is controversial. Because survival is long at early stages and most of the patients are young, fertility sparing surgery could be safely suggested to these patients.

Background and Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis (RMS) and to define the determinants of a possible platelet activation reflected as platelet volume enlargement., Methods: Peripheral venous plasma value of MPV was measured in 84 consecutive patients (16 men, 68 women; mean age ± SD = 44 ± 13 years) with RMS who had no left atrial thrombus by transoesophageal echocardiography. The control group consisted of 32 healthy subjects (nine men, 23 women; mean age ± SD = 38 ± 7 years)., Results: The patients had significantly higher MPV values (mean ± SD = 10.07 ± 0.58 fL) compared to the healthy subjects (mean ± SD = 8.15 ± 0.60 fL, p < 0.001). Among many clinical and echocardiographic variables, left atrial spontaneous echo contrast-positivity (beta = 0.426, p < 0.001) and severe mitral regurgitation (beta = 0.577, p < 0.001) appeared as significant predictors of platelet enlargement in RMS in multiple linear regression analysis., Conclusions: Patients with RMS have increased platelet activity reflected as elevated MPV; and the coexistence of severe mitral regurgitation and presence of left atrial spontaneous echo contrast are determinants of this increment.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate sleep quality in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) and its relationship with pain, functional status, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL)., Methods: Two hundred patients with CLBP aged 20-78 years (mean: 50.2 years) and 200 sex- and age-matched pain-free healthy controls (HCs) aged 21-73 years (mean: 49.7 years) were included in this study. After lumbar region examination, in patients, pain was evaluated with the Short Form-McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), functional capacity with the Functional Rating Index (FRI), and health-related quality of life with the Short Form-36 (SF-36). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep quality of both groups.The sleep quality was compared between the patients and HCs. In patients with CLBP, its relations with pain, functional status and HRQOL were also investigated., Results: The patients had significantly higher total scores (8.1 ± 4.3, 4.6 ± 3.4, P< 0.001, respectively) and subscale scores (P< 0.001) for PSQI compared to HCs. The groups were only similar in use of sleeping medication (P> 0.05) Among the patients, sleep quality was worse in women, in the patients with complaints more than 11 years, in the patients with low back and two leg pain (P< 0.05). Mean scores of the FRI, SF-MPQ, and visual analog scale in the patients were 8.5 ± 3.0, 16.7 ± 8.0, 6.9 ± 1.2, respectively. The PSQI total scores of patients were positively related with both SF-MPQ and FRI scores (P< 0.001). Also, there were negative relationships between the physical component summary score of the SF-36 and all subscale scores of the PSQI, without sleep duration of PSQI (P< 0.001)., Conclusion: The sleep quality of patients with CLBP was worse compared to HCs, and there were positive relations between the sleep quality with pain and functional status. Also, the poor sleep quality had negative effect on the physical component of quality of life.

Background: Standardized techniques to detect HIV-neutralizing antibody responses are of great importance in the search for an HIV vaccine., Methods: Here, we present a high-throughput, high-content automated plaque reduction (APR) assay based on automated microscopy and image analysis that allows evaluation of neutralization and inhibition of cell-cell fusion within the same assay. Neutralization of virus particles is measured as a reduction in the number of fluorescent plaques, and inhibition of cell-cell fusion as a reduction in plaque area., Results: We found neutralization strength to be a significant factor in the ability of virus to form syncytia. Further, we introduce the inhibitory concentration of plaque area reduction (ICpar) as an additional measure of antiviral activity, i.e. fusion inhibition., Conclusions: We present an automated image based high-throughput, high-content HIV plaque reduction assay. This allows, for the first time, simultaneous evaluation of neutralization and inhibition of cell-cell fusion within the same assay, by quantifying the reduction in number of plaques and mean plaque area, respectively. Inhibition of cell-to-cell fusion requires higher quantities of inhibitory reagent than inhibition of virus neutralization.

The aim of this study was to assess toxic metal (Cd, Pb and Al) contamination and levels of three essential trace elements (Mn, Cr and Co) in 63 infant formulas. In addition, the levels of these metals in the study samples were compared with the acceptable limits of toxic heavy metals and the recommended daily allowances (RDAs) of essential trace elements. According to our results, the toxic metal levels measured in the formulas were within the acceptable limits, with the exception of Al levels in 8 of the 63 samples. In 16 samples, Mn levels exceeded 600 μg/day, and the Cr content in 7 samples was higher than 5.5 μg/day, these amounts being the adequate intake levels for infants. Cobalt levels in 10 formulas were higher than the RDA. In view of these findings, which indicate that metal levels in infant formulas are generally much higher than those found in breast milk, breast milk should be preferred for infant feeding. Moreover, since infants are potentially more susceptible to metals, infant foods should be monitored regularly and checked for contamination by toxic metals as well as for levels of essential trace elements.

Primary ocular adnexal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas (OAMLs) are mostly seen in the 5th-7th decades of life, with female predominance, and they occur rarely in children. Thus, knowledge about this cancer type is obtained from adult data in the literature, while the data regarding OAMLs in the pediatric population are limited to a few case reports. Herein, we report a 10-year-old boy with OAML who was treated successfully with radiotherapy, and we discuss this uncommon lymphoma in children.

Development of in vitro technologies that will allow the culture of early stage follicles before antral stage is an essential part of research in reproductive biology in order to understand the ovarian folliculogenesis better. Current evidence suggests that oocyte and somatic cells-derived growth factors interacting with each other and extracellular matrix proteins at paracrine level are involved in this early, gonadotrophin-independent phase of follicle growth. Basement membrane matrix protein (Matrigel™) is a soluble gel rich in extracellular matrix proteins and growth factors. Activin A promotes preantral follicle growth in vivo by inducing the proliferation of granulosa cells and by upregulating the expression of FSH receptor and aromatase enzyme. We hypothesized that activin A and matrigel may provide a better in vitro environment for early stage preantral follicles. Preantral follicles isolated from 14-21 day old BALB/c mice were cultured in matrigel ± activin A for four days. The growth (119.4% versus 45.4%, p < 0.05; respectively) and survival rates (76.3% versus 43.7%, p < 0.05; respectively) of the follicles treated with activin A were significantly higher compared to those without activin A. These results suggest that Activin A and matrigel provide a better in vitro milieu for the growth of isolated ovarian follicles.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence rate, identify the risk factors, and describe the clinical outcome of perioperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing noncardiac, nonvascular surgery (NCS)., Methods: A total of 1,200 adult consecutive patients undergoing NCS were prospectively evaluated. Patients with pre-existing renal dysfunction were excluded. The primary outcome of this study was perioperative AKI defined by the RIFLE (risk, injury, failure, loss of function, and end-stage kidney disease) criteria., Results: Eighty-one patients (6.7%) met the AKI criteria. Multivariate analysis identified age, diabetes, revised cardiac risk index, and American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status as independent predictors of AKI. Patients with AKI had more cardiovascular (33.3% vs 11.3%, P < .001) complications and a higher in-hospital mortality rate (6.1% vs 0.9%, P = .003) compared with patients without AKI., Conclusions: Several preoperative predictors are found to be associated with AKI after NCS. To investigate associations of the Fas and FasL genes polymorphisms with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). One hundred patients with RA and age-, sex- and ethnically matched 101 controls were included. Four polymorphisms of Fas (-670 A>G rs1800682, -1377 G>A rs2234767) and FasL (IVS2nt-124 A>G rs5030772, -844 T>C rs763110) genes were typed from genomic DNA. Genotype distributions and allelic frequencies were compared between patients and control subjects. After the history and clinical examination of patients with RA, in terms of pain, fatigue and general health status were evaluated by visual analogue scale. Thereafter, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, blood count and rheumatoid factor levels were measured. The Disease Activity Score-28, Health Assessment Questionnaire and modified Sharp score were used to evaluate the disease activity, functional disability and radiological damage, and their relationships with the Fas and FasL gene polymorphisms were investigated. In patients with RA, CT and TT genotypes of FasL-844, polymorphism were twofold and 4.8-fold higher, and AA genotype of FasL IVS2nt-124 polymorphism was 3.4-fold higher than the control group (respectively, p = 0.05, p = 0.002, p = 0.039). T allele of FasL-844 polymorphism was more frequent in patients than controls (respectively, 52.5 vs. 41.4 %, p = 0.027). Any association was not detected between Fas (-670 A>G, -1377 G>A) and FasL (-844 T>C, IVS2nt-124 A>G) gene polymorphisms with the disease activity scores, functional disability and radiological damage. However, the Fas-670 A>G polymorphism was associated with drug therapy (p = 0.049). The distribution of GG genotype was higher compared to GA or AA genotypes in patients using triple disease-modifying antirheumatic drug therapy (71.4, 14.3 and 14.3 %, respectively). These findings suggest that the -844 T>C and IVS2nt-124 A>G polymorphisms in the FasL gene related with apoptosis may increase genetic susceptibility to RA in a Turkish population. In addition, the Fas-670 A>G gene polymorphism may be associated with disease progression. There is a need for further studies to clarify the genetic role of apoptosis in RA.

To investigate the associations between Fas and FasL gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to knee osteoarthritis. Genomic DNA was obtained from 146 patients with knee osteoarthritis and 102 healthy controls. Genotype distributions and allelic frequencies of four polymorphisms of Fas (-670 G>A rs1800682, -1377 G>A rs2234767) and FasL (IVS2nt-124 A>G rs5030772, -844 T>C rs763110) genes were compared between the groups. Thereafter, this association was investigated between patients and controls of the same sex. There were significant differences between patients with knee osteoarthritis and controls regarding the genotype distributions and allelic frequencies of Fas-1377 G>A polymorphism (P = 0.0001 and P = 0.005, respectively). The Fas-1377 GG genotype and G allele were significantly more frequent in patients with knee osteoarthritis than in controls. Genotype distributions and allelic frequencies of Fas-670 G>A, FasL-844 T>C, and FasL IVS2nt-124 A>G polymorphisms did not differ between the groups (P > 0.05). However, there were no significant differences between patients and controls of the same sex (P > 0.05). These findings suggest that the Fas-1377 G>A polymorphism in the Fas gene related with apoptosis may contribute to susceptibility to knee osteoarthritis in the Turkish population. There is a need for further studies to evaluate the role of apoptosis in large cohorts.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) is less transmissible and less pathogenic compared to HIV-1 and, when matched for CD4(+) T cell count, the plasma viral load in HIV-2-infected individuals is approximately one log lower than in HIV-1-infected individuals. The explanation for these observations is elusive, but differences in virus controlling immunity generated in the two infections may be contributing factors. In the present study, we investigated neutralization by immunoglobulin A (IgA), in parallel with IgG, purified from plasma of HIV-1, HIV-2, and HIV-1/HIV-2 dually (HIV-D) infected individuals. Neutralization was analyzed against HIV-1 and HIV-2 isolates using a plaque reduction assay. In HIV-2 infection, intratype-specific neutralization by IgA was frequently detected, although at a lesser magnitude then the corresponding IgG neutralizing titers. In contrast, neutralization by IgA could rarely be demonstrated in HIV-1 infection despite similar plasma IgA levels in both infections. In addition, IgA and IgG of HIV-D plasma neutralized the HIV-2 isolate more potently than the HIV-1 isolate, suggesting that the difference between neutralizing activity of plasma IgA and IgG depends on the virus itself. Taken together, these findings suggest that both IgA and IgG add to the potent intratype neutralizing activity detected in HIV-2 plasma, which may contribute to virus control in HIV-2 infection.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2)-infected individuals develop immunodeficiency with a considerable delay and transmit the virus at rates lower than HIV-1-infected persons. Conceivably, comparative studies on the immune responsiveness of HIV-1- and HIV-2-infected hosts may help to explain the differences in pathogenesis and transmission between the two types of infection. Previous studies have shown that the neutralizing antibody response is more potent and broader in HIV-2 than in HIV-1 infection. In the present study, we have examined further the function of the humoral immune response and studied the effect of complement on the antiviral activity of plasma from singly HIV-1- or HIV-2-infected individuals, as well as HIV-1/HIV-2 dually infected individuals. The neutralization and antibody-dependent complement-mediated inactivation of HIV-1 and HIV-2 isolates were tested in a plaque reduction assay using U87.CD4.CCR5 cells. The results showed that the addition of complement increased intratype antiviral activities of both HIV-1 and HIV-2 plasma samples, although the complement effect was more pronounced with HIV-2 than HIV-1 plasma. Using an area-under-the-curve (AUC)-based readout, multivariate statistical analysis confirmed that the type of HIV infection was independently associated with the magnitude of the complement effect. The analyses carried out with purified IgG indicated that the complement effect was largely exerted through the classical complement pathway involving IgG in both HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections. In summary, these findings suggest that antibody binding to HIV-2 structures facilitates the efficient use of complement and thereby may be one factor contributing to a strong antiviral activity present in HIV-2 infection.

Toxic metals are one of the significant groups of chemical contaminants that humans are exposed to by oral, inhalation, and dermal routes. Exposure to these chemicals begins with intrauterine life and continues during lactation period at the first years of life. Breastfeeding has a much more special place than other nutrition options for infants. However, when possibility of contaminant transfer by breast milk is considered, its safety and quality is essential. Regarding infant and mother health and limited number of information on this field in Turkey, measuring contamination levels in breast milk is important. Therefore, in the present study, lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and arsenic (As) levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry in 64 breast milk samples obtained from mothers from Ankara, Turkey. Pb and Ni levels in breast milk samples were found to be 391.45±269.01 μg/l and 43.94±33.82 μg/l (mean ± SD), respectively. Cd was found only in one of 64 samples, and the level was 4.62 μg/l. As level was below the limit of quantification (LOQ, 7.6 μg/l) in all samples. These findings will accurately direct strategies and solutions of protection against contaminants in order to reduce their levels in biological fluids.
