The results of recently developed Monte Carlo methods for simulation of strongly associating fluids show an apparent disagreement with Wertheim’s theory of associating fluids. Atmospheric temperature and humidity retrievals from ground-based microwave remote sensing are useful in a variety of meteorological and environmental applications. Though the influence of clouds is usually considered in current retrieval algorithms, the resulting temperature and humidity estimates are still biased high in overcast conditions compared to radiosonde observations. Therefore, there is a need to improve the quality of retrievals in cloudy conditions. This paper presents an approach to make brightness temperature (TB) correction for cloud influence before the data can be used in the inversion of vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and humidity. A three-channel method is proposed to make cloud parameter estimation, i.e., of the total 22 channels of the ground-based radiometer, three are adopted to set up a relationship between cloud parameters and brightness temperatures, so that the observations from the three channels can be used to estimate cloud thickness and water content and complete the cloud correction for the rest of the channels used in the retrieval. Based on two years of data from the atmosphere in Beijing, a comparison of the retrievals with radiosonde observations (RAOB) shows: (1) the temperature retrievals from this study have a higher correlation with RAOB and are notably better than in the vendor-provided LV2. The bias of the temperature retrievals from this study is close to zero at all heights, and the RMSE is greatly reduced from >5 °C to <2 °C in the layer, from about 1.5 km up to 5 km. The temperature retrievals from this study have higher correlation with RAOB data compared to the vendor-provided LV2, especially at and above a 2 km height. (2) The bias of the water vapor density profile from this study is near to zero, while the LV2 has a positive bias as large as 4 g/m3. The RMSE of the water vapor density profile from this study is <2 g/m3, while the RMSE for LV2 is as large as 10 g/m3. That is, both the bias and RMSE from this study are evidently less than the LV2, with a greater improvement in the lower troposphere below 5 km. Correlation with RAOB is improved even more for the water vapor density. The correlation of the retrievals from this study increases to one within the boundary layer, but the correlation of LV2 with RAOB is only 0.8 at 0.5 km height, 0.7 at 1 km, and even less than 0.5 at 2 km. (3) A parameter named the Cloud Impact index, determined by cloud water concentration and cloud thickness, together with the cloud base height, has been defined to show that both BIAS and RMSE of "high-CI subsample" are larger than those of the "low-CI subsample", indicating that high-CI cloud has a higher impact on the retrievals and the correction for cloud influence is more necessary. Water vapor is a key element in both the greenhouse effect and the water cycle. However, water vapor has not been well studied due to the limitations of conventional monitoring instruments. Recently, estimating rain rate by the rain-induced attenuation of commercial microwave links (MLs) has been proven to be a feasible method. Similar to rainfall, water vapor also attenuates the energy of MLs. Thus, MLs also have the potential of estimating water vapor. This study proposes a method to estimate water vapor density by using the received signal level (RSL) of MLs at 15, 18, and 23 GHz, which is the first attempt to estimate water vapor by MLs below 20 GHz. This method trains a sensing model with prior RSL data and water vapor density by the support vector machine, and the model can directly estimate the water vapor density from the RSLs without preprocessing. The results show that the measurement resolution of the proposed method is less than 1 g/m3. The correlation coefficients between automatic weather stations and MLs range from 0.72 to 0.81, and the root mean square errors range from 1.57 to 2.31 g/m3. With the large availability of signal measurements from communications operators, this method has the potential of providing refined data on water vapor density, which can contribute to research on the atmospheric boundary layer and numerical weather forecasting. To assess the quality of the retrieved products from ground-based microwave radiometers, the "clear-sky" Level-2 data (LV2) products (profiles of atmospheric temperature and humidity) filtered through a radiometer in Beijing during the 24 months from January 2010 to December 2011 were compared with radiosonde data. Evident differences were revealed. Therefore, this paper investigated an approach to calibrate the observed brightness temperatures by using the model-simulated brightness temperatures as a reference under clear-sky conditions. The simulation was completed with a radiative transfer model and National Centers for Environmental Prediction final analysis (NCEP FNL) data that are independent of the radiometer system. Then, the least-squares method was used to invert the calibrated brightness temperatures to the atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles. A comparison between the retrievals and radiosonde data showed that the calibration of the brightness temperature observations is necessary, and can improve the inversion of temperature and humidity profiles compared with the original LV2 products. Specifically, the consistency with radiosonde was clearly improved: the correlation coefficients are increased, especially, the correlation coefficient for water vapor density increased from 0.2 to 0.9 around the 3 km height; the bias decreased to nearly zero at each height; the RMSE (root of mean squared error) for temperature profile was decreased by more than 1 degree at most heights; the RMSE for water vapor density was decreased from greater than 4 g/m3 to less than 1.5 g/m3 at 1 km height; and the decrease at all other heights were also noticeable. In this paper, the evolution of a temperature inversion process is given as an example, using the high-temporal-resolution brightness temperature after quality control to obtain a temperature and humidity profile every two minutes. Therefore, the characteristics of temperature inversion that cannot be seen by conventional radiosonde data (twice daily) were obtained by radiometer. This greatly compensates for the limited temporal coverage of radiosonde data. The approach presented by this paper is a valuable reference for the reprocessing of the historical observations, which have been accumulated for years by less-calibrated radiometers. The complexity of the phenomena simultaneously occurring, from the very first instants of high-power laser pulse interaction with the target up to the phase explosion, along with the strong changes in chemical-physical properties of matter, makes modeling laser ablation a hard task, especially near the thermodynamic critical regime. In this work, we report a computational model of an aluminum target irradiated in vacuum by a gaussian-shaped pulse of 20 n s duration, with a peak intensity of the order of G W / c m 2 . This continuum model covers laser energy deposition and temperature evolution in the irradiated target, along with the mass removal mechanism involved, and the vaporized material expansion. Aluminum was considered to be a case study due to the vast literature on the temperature dependence of its thermodynamic, optical, and transport properties that were used to estimate time-dependent values of surface-vapor quantities (vapor pressure, vapor density, vapor and surface temperature) and vapor gas-dynamical quantities (density, velocity, pressure) as it expands into vacuum. Very favorable agreement is reported with experimental data regarding: mass removal and crater depth due to vaporization, generated recoil momentum, and vapor flow velocity expansion. Total vapor-phase densities of Dy in equilibrium with a DyI3/InI condensate and Tm in equilibrium with a TmI3/TlI condensate have been measured for temperatures between 900 K and 1400 K. The measurements show strong enhancements in rare-earth vapor densities compared to vapors in equilibrium with the pure rare-earth metal-halides. The measurements were made with x-ray induced fluorescence on the sector 1-ID beam line at the Advanced Photon Source. We demonstrate that coherent random lasing can occur in solid-state dispersions of laser dyes 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran and 4-dicyanomethylene-2-tert-butyl-6-(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidin-4-yl-vinyl)-4H-pyran within a tris(8-hydroxy-quinolinato)aluminum matrix without the need for infiltrated scatterers. Random lasing thresholds as low as 90 μJ/cm2 are observed in 250 nm-thick films with 2-2.5% dye concentration. We find that the lasing threshold exhibits a power law decay with sample area, providing a simple test for the occurrence of random lasing. We discuss the implications of this result in the context of previous reports of lasing in these materials where feedback was provided by conventional optical resonators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

So far the models used to study dust grain-plasma interactions in fusion plasmas neglect the effects of dust material vapor, which is always present around dust in rather hot and dense edge plasma environment in fusion devices. However, when the vapor density and/or the amount of ionized vapor atoms become large enough, they can alter the grain-plasma interactions. Somewhat similar processes occur during pellet injection in fusion plasma. Gas sensing to recognize volatile liquids is successfully conducted through pipe-guided terahertz (THz) radiation in a reflective and label-free manner. The hollow core of a pipe waveguide can efficiently deliver the sensing probe of the THz confined waveguide fields to any place where dangerous vapors exist. Target vapors that naturally diffuse from a sample site into the pipe core can be detected based on strong interaction between the probe and analyte. The power variation of the THz reflectance spectrum in response to various types and densities of vapors are characterized experimentally using a glass pipe. The most sensitive THz frequency of the pipe waveguide can recognize vapors with a resolution at a low part-per-million level. The investigation found that the sensitivity of the pipe-waveguide sensing scheme is dependent on the vapor absorption strength, which is strongly related to the molecular amount and properties including the dipole moment and mass of a gas molecule. The influence of initiation behavior of the drawn arc on the arc motion, on arc characteristics during the active phase, as well as on the post-arc parameters, was studied. The study was focused on arc dynamics, determination of the anode surface temperature after current interruption, and diagnostics of metal vapor density after current zero crossing. Different optical diagnostics, namely high-speed camera video enhanced by narrow-band optical filters, near infrared spectroscopy, and optical absorption spectroscopy was applied. The initiation behavior of the drawn arc had a clear influence on arc parameters. Higher local electrode temperature occurs in case of the electrodes with ignition point near the outer electrode boundary. This further causes an enhanced density of chromium vapor, even in cases with lower arc duration. Densities of two methane-rich binary mixtures were measured in the homogeneous liquid and the supercritical region at temperatures between (100 and 160) K using a low-temperature single-sinker magnetic-suspension densimeter. For each mixture, four isotherms were studied over the pressure range from (0.3 to 10.8) MPa. Molar compositions of the gravimetrically prepared methane-rich binary mixtures were approximately 0.01 butane and 0.02 isopentane, respectively, with the balance being methane. The relative expanded combined uncertainty (k = 2) of the experimental densities was estimated to be in the range of (0.02 to 0.06) %. Due to a supercritical liquefaction procedure and the integration of a special VLE-cell, it was possible to measure densities in the homogeneous liquid phase without changing the composition of the liquefied mixture. Based on the supercritical liquefaction procedure, a new time-saving measurement procedure was developed and applied. Moreover, saturated-liquid densities were determined by extrapolation of the experimental single-phase liquid densities to the vapor pressure calculated with an equation of state (EOS); here, the relative expanded combined uncertainty (k = 2) is less than 0.05 % in most cases. The new experimental results were compared with the GERG-2008 equation of state, the EOS-LNG and the enhanced revised Klosek and McKinley (ERKM) method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Manure on dairies is the second largest agricultural source of ammonia emissions. Ammonia (NH3) emissions were measured at a 3400-cow open-lot dairy in Texas using a backward Lagrangian Stochastic model in combination with measurements from long-path tunable diode lasers and on-site sonic anemometers. Measurements were made for multiple weeks at a time for most seasons over two years. Both 30-min and daily average emissions were influenced by air temperature consistent with a van 't Hoff equation. Emissions were also linearly related to saturation vapor density deficit. The influence of temperature on NH3 solubility, expressed by the van 't Hoff temperature correction function, decreased as the water vapor deficit increased. The mean annual daily NH3 emissions at the farm was estimated at 82 g NH3 d−1 per animal (105 g NH3 AU−1 d−1, 1 AU = 500 kg) with mean emission during the summer of 124 g NH3 d−1 per animal (159 g NH3 AU−1 d−1). A distinct diurnal pattern in NH3 emissions was consistent with diurnal patterns in wind speed, saturation vapor density deficit and air temperature.
