This article explores the establishment and development of fan-owned association football club, F.C. United of Manchester. It does this by drawing upon extensive ethnographic fieldwork, including interviews, observations and an analysis of multiple texts, such as fanzines, web-based and media reports materials and discusses this using Herbert Blumer's theory of collective behavior. As such, the article addresses two research questions: first, what the empirical case example of F.C. United of Manchester offers to the critical understanding of Blumer's theory and second, what the theory can give to the understanding of twenty-first century protests in popular culture. In this article, we explore and discuss the role that zines play in asexual and aromantic community and worldmaking. Drawing on intersectional feminist zine studies and asexuality studies, we consider how zines, and in particular Taking the Cake, Brown and Gray, and An Aromantic Manifesto, have provided an important Do-It-Yourself (DIY) platform for asexual (ace) and aromantic (aro) people to navigate their identities, challenge compulsory sexuality, and reimagine ace and aro worlds. Adopting the framework of Lordean erotics, we focus in our analysis on how ace and aro zinesters navigate questions of queerness, gender, ability, race, and racism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Queer, trans, and non-binary youth navigate school spaces punctuated by erasures, silences, and oppression, and resist these experiences through solidarity-building, activism, and art practice. In this article, we seek to centre experiences of school and society as important spheres of inquiry through participatory visual research with queer, trans, and non-binary young people (ages 12 to 17) and pre-service teachers and community educators (ages 22 to 40) in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Using an intersectional lens, we consider how intersecting power structures--gender, race, class, and disability--produce unequal impacts in relation to school and social experiences in New Brunswick. Centring youth agency, we position youth as knowledge producers through participatory visual methods of inquiry, including the making of zines (DIY print productions). With youth and pre-service teachers, through inquiry into existing and desired school and social experiences, we seek to make visual the practice of intergenerational solidarity building through zine production. Performing research in fan studies, or any other discipline, is difficult if not impossible without access to documentary collections of primary historical documents, including manuscript material, fannish creations such as fanzines, fanvids and filksongs, correspondence, and ephemera. There are a number of institutions across the world that hold these sorts of collections, and here we provide information about a selected few of those open to scholarly research. This article explores the ways in which fan archives, particularly physical archives of pre-internet fan artefacts, offer a limited perspective of fan participation based on conditions of access to fan community and production means. Using 1960s fan magazines dedicated to J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy that emerged in the early days of US-based fandom, this research demonstrates that analysis of the content of these fanzines is most significant to fan studies when it considers factors of publication such as who had access to printing materials, funding and the social conditions of the 1960s that would have privileged specific fan voices over others. I argue that archives that fail to take factors such as these into account help to perpetuate notions of acceptable fandom as practised by White fans. The fandom presented in the pages of The Lord of the Rings fanzines, as presented by their political statements or lack of, shows how fandom interests change when fandoms move from heavily concentrated spaces, fanzines, to broader and more accessible spaces such as the internet. Girlhood (It's complicated) is an exhibition at the National Museum of American History (NMAH), part of the Smithsonian Institution, which opened in October of 2020. Created with federal funding as part of the American Women's History Initiative (AWHI), the exhibition commemorates the centennial of women's suffrage. To put a fresh spin on this anniversary and draw attention to larger, intertwining issues of gender and politics in the United States, the exhibition team chose to explore the history of girlhood and girls as political actors as the focus of the show. Drawing on the rich, interdisciplinary literature of girlhood studies and inspired by zines as a form of identity creation and political self-expression, the show aims to create a public history of girlhood that unveils the public lives of girls in the past and showcases the many ways in which they, even without the vote or formal political power, have had a political voice in American history. The exhibition is open at the NMAH from October 2020 to January 2023, and will travel with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service through 2026. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this commentary I engage with Chiara Valli's creative zine-making in Bushwick, NYC. In keeping with the spirit of zines, this piece offers a series of (not always connected!) reactions, questions, feelings which address the key question raised by Chiara: how can research become more inclusive? In this article, I make the case for an underexplored research practice -- participatory dissemination -- and reflectively introduce a new research method, IBZM (Interview-Based Zine-Making), which I developed in my fieldwork research on the gentrifying neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, in New York City. Participatory dissemination is a practice that engages research participants in the interpretation of preliminary research findings, and through art-based methods, leads to the coproduction of visual outputs and research communication for diversified audiences, especially those beyond solely academic readers. Participatory dissemination has received little attention within academic debates thus far. The paper addresses this gap in the literature by outlining the rationale and potential for incorporating participatory processes within research dissemination, even where socalled traditional (non- or less-participatory) research methods are used. IBZM follows the technique of zine-making (that is, the practice of cutting, rearranging, and creatively pasting printed materials in a new pamphlet), but instead of using media texts and pictures as raw materials, IBZM works with transcribed texts from researcher-conducted interviews. The aim is to let the research participants (zine-makers) engage with the perspectives of the interviewees and find assonances, disagreements, and connections with their own thoughts. The output is a collectively produced zine to be further disseminated. IBZM offers a means of combining traditional detached research methods, such as interviews, with participatory and creative/visual research methods. As such, participatory dissemination can be helpful in bridging literatures and debates on participatory and traditional research methods, providing new avenues for researchers working primarily with the latter to incorporate participatory elements into their research process and outputs. Punk scenes are complex and heterogeneous. They have always been prolific producers of physical documentation of their attitudes, beliefs, and actions. At the same time, these scenes have often existed on the margins, which has led to the creation of fugitive collections of self-documentation. In Slavic, East European and Eurasian (SEEE) countries, this documentation has historically taken the form of non-traditional music releases, zines, and samizdat. Due to the often-illegal nature of these creations, the materials did not find immediate homes in official repositories, and the fugitive materials experienced a covert diaspora initially across Eastern Europe and later across multiple continents. The author provides a case study of the current state of collections of non-traditionally published SEEE punk materials to highlight the challenges that face access and use of marginalized, diasporic collections. This paper provides a definition of punk in a SEEE context; offers a literature review to illustrate the discourse and collections that address Slavic and East European punk materials; draws connections between SEEE punk alternative publications and broader marginalized fugitive collections; describes obstacles faced by collections of Slavic punk materials; and concludes by way of recommendations for addressing these challenges in order to improve access and use. This article considers ethical issues of consent and privacy during each phase of archival stewardship. The authors examine flaws in traditional archival theory that contribute to oppression and silencing and highlight unique collections and practices at San Diego State University that begin to set the 21st century archive apart. We focus on responsive collection stewardship with two case studies—a collection of correspondence from individuals being held in a detention center and a zine collection. Drawing on a framework of radical empathy and ethics of care set forth by Michelle Caswell and Marika Cifor (2016), we will critically dissect, dismantle, and unsettle traditional approaches to consent and privacy. The first case study scrutinizes privacy and consent issues surrounding the documentation of vulnerable populations with an emphasis on ethics. The second case study examines the need for increased sensitivity and flexibility in collecting zines. The article shares ideas for how to acquire and manage these types of collections in socially and ethically responsible ways, using an archival ethics worksheet that prioritizes consent and privacy throughout the stewardship process. VacZineNations! is a collaborative artwork led by Rachelle Viader Knowles and Mkrtich Tonoyan, produced by artists, students, and designers in the UK, Canada, China, and Armenia, and exhibited as part of at Galleri KiT in Trondheim, Norway, and UNAIDS in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2017. This critical dialogue text gives insight into the necessarily messy approach used to develop a project with over one hundred participants, working from multiple disciplinary and geographic perspectives. This text is accompanied by a second essay that positions the artwork within the context of practice-led research (see Knowles, “VacZineNations! as Practice-Led Research” in this volume).

INTRODUCTION Zine scholarship is a relatively new academic field that has emerged since the late 1990’s. Now that two decades have passed since the publication of Stephen Duncombe’s seminal text, Notes From Underground, it is possible to take a landscape view of how and why zine scholars have studied zines in peer-reviewed journal publications. Knowing how scholars have studied zines can teach us about how zines and zine culture have contributed to academic knowledge. We can also learn which subjects are understudied as zine scholars continue to investigate these curious ephemeral print objects. METHODS This study uses citation analysis to uncover how scholars have explored zines and zine culture as objects worthy of academic inquiry between the dates of 1990 and 2018. The purpose of this study is to examine whether (and how) zines have held influence as objects worthy of study over time, to determine which disciplines tend to treat zines as a valuable academic pursuit, and to reveal what subtopics those scholars tend to focus on. RESULTS& DISCUSSION This study analyzes 163 peer-reviewed articles published between 1990 and 2018, and finds that a) scholarly interest in zines has increased steadily and by 1,700% over 28 years; b) that scholars in the fields of Library Science, Education, Feminist Studies, and Media Studies are most likely to study zines; and c) that zine scholars pursue a wide and varied range of subtopics most prominently concentrated in “riot grrrl” studies, “collection development,” “music criticism,” and a suite of articles about aspects of art. More nuanced analysis based on discipline and subtopic are discussed in the findings. CONCLUSION This study makes clear that zines are influential and worthy objects of study, not just as a form of print media, but as educational and pedagogical tools in the classroom, as evidence of activism, political movements, third-wave feminism, cultural critiques, cultural movements, and much more. Future scholars may use this study to build upon more established topics as well as those that are understudied.

Popular culture collecting in academic special collections and archives is sometimes still viewed within the institution as a challenge to traditional collection development, which has tended to emphasize the mainstream and enshrine privilege and power. This is especially the case when the cultures and media emphasized in such collecting might be categorized as being counter-cultural, DIY ('do-it-yourself'), or somehow 'other.' This article consists of three case studies that emphasize recently developed popular culture-based collections at Rutgers University's Special Collections and University Archives that focus on voices and communities outside archival norms of collecting: the New Brunswick Music Scene Archive, the New Jersey Regional Zine Collection, and the New Jersey Beer Collection. An emphasis on how faculty and staff have developed these collections by working with participants and creators outside mainstream popular culture leads to examples of how faculty and staff have engaged in outreach, particularly among students. Woven throughout are examples of challenges faculty and staff have faced around institutional acceptance, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivities along with work to overcome the challenges. Illi Anna Heger's 2013 comic-zine, Xier packt xiesen Koff er, proff ers new possibilities for gender-inclusive German language with the introduction of their gender-neutral pronouns: xier (personal pronoun), dier (article or relative pronoun), and xies- (possessive pronoun). In addition to providing brief histories of German comics studies, zine culture, and gender-neutral language in German, this article examines the comic-zine's structure to posit that its hybrid form is central in communicating its vision for inclusive language that creates space for all gender identities. This project examines how queer and trans zines have complicated the notion of traditional patient narratives and provides insight into the issues that LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning) populations face when accessing healthcare information and resources. Historically, information about queer and trans identities has been suppressed in the United States, reflecting dominant social values that pathologize queer identities. Using health-related zines housed at the Queer Zine Archive Project as a case study, this project investigates how queer and trans zines about healthcare have resisted these homophobic and transphobic ideologies. The analysis reveals that queer and trans zinesters use their feelings of impatience with the medical industry to fuel communal solutions to accessing and providing health care information. The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is a unique identifier most often associated with popular magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. The scope of ISSN, however, includes many types of grey literature. This article will discuss and provide examples of the types of grey literature in scope for ISSN and describe the bibliographic metadata about these resources created to support each ISSN assignment. Benefits to the originators of grey literature that result from ISSN assignments are highlighted, especially the valuable exposure that the resources gain from the bibliographic records that are created to document ISSN assignments and are included in multiple international databases. This article explores the connection between punk culture and artistic expression, drawing on a series of interviews with contemporary artists and designers who reflect the notion of 'punk art' and featuring their work to show how this continues to thrive in an independent context through music graphics, fanzines, comics, posters and flyers, professional work practices, such as tattoo design, and the art world. It outlines the prominent, established names in punk art and design before looking beyond it to a selection of people whose lived experience of punk is reflected in their work. This article draws out what connection, if any, there is between punk politics, values and ideals and various forms of artistic expression, while issues of high vs. low, commercial vs. DIY and collaborative vs. individualistic forms of practice provide recurrent themes throughout. This article explores how comics and other graphic formats constitute a useful means for people to explore and articulate experiences of plurality. First the literature on plural selves is presented, drawing from therapeutic and self-help work around exploring and embracing one's inner parts (children, critics, parents, alter egos, etc). This is linked with mad pride movements to reclaim pathologising psychiatric diagnosis like Dissociative Identity Disorder (previously Multiple Personality Disorder). This is then linked to queer theoretical and activist perspectives by considering how depathologising plurality follows similar endeavours in relation to (homo)sexuality, kink, and (trans)gender. Plurality of self is related to the wider queer endeavour of challenging stable, fixed identities and critiquing neoliberal capitalist individualistic ways of comprehending the self. Finally, comics and graphic formats are reflected upon as one key potential way for people to explore their own plurality and to articulate their plural experiences to close others and wider audiences. An ever-increasing body of work within HCI investigates questions of around "Women's Health" with the aim to disrupt the status quo of defaulting to an implicit norm of cis-male bodies. This laudable and feminist project has the potential to drastically improve the inclusivity and availability of health care. To explore how this research attends to gender, embodiment and identity, we conducted a critical discourse analysis of 17 publications explicitly positioning themselves as works concerned with "Women's Health". We find essentialised articulations of embodiment and gender, though little discussion on the intersections of race, class, sexuality and cultural contexts. Through two speculative designs, we illustrate potential responses to our analysis: The Shadow Zine, a reflection of self and the Compass, a token for community care.1 Our work provides an opportunity to develop a broader frame of gender and health, one that centers (gendered) marginalised health by attending to the power structures of existing medical practices and norms. This article builds on and extends geographic calls for creative methodologies and critical geographic pedagogies, by tracing the formation of the zine, "Across the Street: An Environmental Justice Zine about Kids, Industry, and Health". Central to a study of toxic poisoning in the East Cesar Chavez neighborhood of Austin, Texas, one of five historic neighborhoods of color in the city, we demonstrate ways to think about, produce and engage with zines as both an instructive geographic method and a form of critical pedagogy. Reflecting on the process of this zine's production, we argue that zines can be both instructive in the analysis of research and a compelling way to engage students in difficult dialogs in and beyond the classroom.
