Microservice architecture advocates a number of technologies and practices such as lightweight container, container orchestration, and DevOps, with the promised benefits of faster delivery, improved scalability, and greater autonomy. However, microservice systems implemented in industry vary a lot in terms of adopted practices and achieved benefits, drastically different from what is advocated in the literature. In this article, we conduct an empirical study, including an online survey with 51 responses and 14 interviews for experienced microservice experts to advance our understanding regarding to microservice practices in industry. As a part of our findings, the empirical study clearly revealed three levels of maturity of microservice systems (from basic to advanced): independent development and deployment, high scalability and availability, and service ecosystem, categorized by the fulfilled benefits of microservices. We also identify 11 practical issues that constrain the microservice capabilities of organizations. For each issue, we summarize the practices that have been explored and adopted in industry, along with the remaining challenges. Our study can help practitioners better position their microservice systems and determine what infrastructures and capabilities are worth investing. Our study can also help researchers better understand industrial microservice practices and identify useful research problems.

Learning discriminative representation using large-scale face datasets in the wild is crucial for real-world applications, yet it remains challenging. The difficulties lie in many aspects and this work focus on computing resource constraint and long-tailed class distribution. Recently, classification-based representation learning with deep neural networks and well-designed losses have demonstrated good recognition performance. However, the computing and memory cost linearly scales up to the number of identities (classes) in the training set, and the learning process suffers from unbalanced classes. In this work, we propose a dynamic class queue (DCQ) to tackle these two problems. Specifically, for each iteration during training, a subset of classes for recognition are dynamically selected and their class weights are dynamically generated on-the-fly which are stored in a queue. Since only a subset of classes is selected for each iteration, the computing requirement is reduced. By using a single server without model parallel, we empirically verify in large-scale datasets that 10% of classes are sufficient to achieve similar performance as using all classes. Moreover, the class weights are dynamically generated in a few-shot manner and therefore suitable for tail classes with only a few instances. We show clear improvement over a strong baseline in the largest public dataset Megaface Challenge2 (MF2) which has 672K identities and over 88% of them have less than 10 instances. FASER$\nu$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is designed to directly detect collider neutrinos for the first time and study their cross sections at TeV energies, where no such measurements currently exist. In 2018, a pilot detector employing emulsion films was installed in the far-forward region of ATLAS, 480 m from the interaction point, and collected 12.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. We describe the analysis of this pilot run data and the observation of the first neutrino interaction candidates at the LHC. Experimentally synthesized perovskite-type YRh$_{3}$B with a $Pm\bar{3}m$ type structure was proposed as a novel topological material (TM) via first-principles calculations and the low-energy $k\cdot p$ effective Hamiltonian, which has a quadratic contact triple point (QCTP) at point $\Gamma$ and six pairs of open nodal lines (NLs) of the hybrid type. Clear surface states observed in the surface spectrum confirmed the topological states. When spin-orbit coupling was considered, the QCTP at $\Gamma$ transferred to the quadratic-type Dirac nodal point (NP). Under 1$\%$ tetragonal strained lattice constants, YRh$_{3}$B hosted richer topological states, including a quadratic-type two-fold degenerate NP, six pairs of open NLs of the hybrid type, and two closed NLs of type I and hybrid type. Moreover, it was proved that the NLs of YRh$_{3}$B at its strained lattice constants contain all types of band-crossing points (BCPs) (i.e., type I, type II, and critical type). Such rich types of NP and NL states in one compound make it potentially applicable for multifunctional electronic devices as well as an appropriate platform to study entanglement among topological states.

In parallel to electronic systems, the concept of topology has been extended to phonons, which has led to the birth of topological phonons. Very recently, nodal point phonons, nodal line phonons, and nodal surface phonons have been proposed, and a handful of candidate materials have been predicted in solid-state materials. In this work, based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we propose that hourglass Weyl nodal line (HWNL) phonons and Dirac nodal line (DNL) phonons coexist in the phonon dispersion of a single material, KCuS, with a $Pnma$-type structure. The HWNLs and DNLs are relatively flat in frequency and well separated from other phonon bands. The corresponding topological phonon surface states appear only in the [100] and [001] surfaces, unlike those of typical phononic nodal-line materials. The reason for this phenomenon is explained based on Zak phase calculations. Our work, for the first time, proves that phononic nodal lines with different types of degeneracies can be achieved in one single material. Thus, KCuS can be viewed as a good platform to investigate the entanglement between HWNL phonons and DNL phonons.

The two-stage methods for instance segmentation, e.g. Mask R-CNN, have achieved excellent performance recently. However, the segmented masks are still very coarse due to the downsampling operations in both the feature pyramid and the instance-wise pooling process, especially for large objects. In this work, we propose a new method called RefineMask for high-quality instance segmentation of objects and scenes, which incorporates fine-grained features during the instance-wise segmenting process in a multi-stage manner. Through fusing more detailed information stage by stage, RefineMask is able to refine high-quality masks consistently. RefineMask succeeds in segmenting hard cases such as bent parts of objects that are over-smoothed by most previous methods and outputs accurate boundaries. Without bells and whistles, RefineMask yields significant gains of 2.6, 3.4, 3.8 AP over Mask R-CNN on COCO, LVIS, and Cityscapes benchmarks respectively at a small amount of additional computational cost. Furthermore, our single-model result outperforms the winner of the LVIS Challenge 2020 by 1.3 points on the LVIS test-dev set and establishes a new state-of-the-art. Understanding the limits of phononic heat dissipation from a two-dimensional layered material (2DLM) to its hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrate and how it varies with the structure of the 2DLM is important for the design and thermal management of h-BN-supported nanoelectronic devices. We formulate an elasticity-based theory to model the phonon-mediated heat dissipation between a 2DLM and its h-BN substrate. By treating the h-BN substrate as a semi-infinite stack of harmonically coupled thin plates, we obtain semi-analytical expressions for the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) and interfacial phonon transmission spectrum. We evaluate the temperature-dependent TBC of the $N$-layer 2DLM (graphene or MoS$_{2}$) on different common substrates (h-BN vs. a-SiO$_{2}$) at different values of $N$. The results suggest that h-BN is substantially more effective for heat dissipation from MoS$_{2}$ than a-SiO$_{2}$ especially at large $N$. To understand the limitations of the our stack model, we also compare its predictions in the $N=\infty$ limit to those of the more exact Atomistic Green's Function model for the graphite-BN and molybdenite-BN interfaces. Condensed matter systems contain both fermionic and bosonic quasiparticles. Owing to the constraint imposed by the Fermi level, ideal material candidate for the emergent particles with higher-dimensional degeneracy manifold (i.e., nodal lines and nodal surfaces) has not been found in electronic systems. This paper demonstrates that according to the first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis, realistic ternary nitride Li$_6$WN$_4$ features ideal (nearly flat) nodal-surface and nodal-line structures in its phonon spectra. These nodal degeneracies are shaped like lanterns, and their existence is guaranteed by nonsymmorphic symmetry. The corresponding topological phonon surface state covers exactly half the surface Brillouin zone (BZ) and can thereby be distinguished from those of conventional nodal-line and nodal-surface semimetals. The results of our study demonstrate the existence of ideal lantern-like phonons in realistic materials, which enriches the classification of topological quantum phases and provides a good basis for investigating the interaction between nodal-line and nodal-surface phonons in a single material.

Quantum manipulation based on geometric phases provides a promising way towards robust quantum gates. However, in the current implementation of nonadiabatic geometric phases, operational and/or random errors tend to destruct the conditions that induce geometric phases, thereby smearing their noise-resilient feature. In a recent experiment [Y. Xu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 230503 (2020)], high-fidelity universal geometric quantum gates have been implemented in a superconducting circuit, which are robust to different types of errors under different configurations of the geometric evolution paths. Here, we apply the path-design strategy to explain in detail why both configurations can realize universal quantum gates in a single-loop way. Meanwhile, we purposefully induce our geometric manipulation by selecting the path configuration that is robust against the qubit-frequency-drift induced error, which is the dominant error source on realistic superconducting circuits and has not been deliberately addressed. Moreover, our proposal can further integrate with the composite scheme to enhance the gate robustness, which is verified by numerical simulations. Therefore, our scheme provides a promising way towards practical realization of high-fidelity and robust nonadiabatic geometric quantum gates., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Three-, four-, and six-fold excitations have significantly extended the subjects of condensed matter physics. There is an urgent need for a realistic material that can have coexisting 3-, 4-, and 6-fold excitations. However, these materials are uncommon because these excitations in electronic systems are usually broken by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and normally far from the Fermi level. Unlike the case in electronic systems, the phonon systems with negligible SOC effect, not constrained by the Pauli exclusion principle, provide a feasible platform to realize these excitations in a wide frequency range. Hence, in this work, we demonstrate by first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis that perfect 3-, 4-, 6-fold excitations appear in the phonon dispersion rather than the band structures of Zr3Ni3Sb4, which is a well-known indirect-gap semiconductor with an Y3Au3Sb4-type structure. This material features 3-fold quadratic contact triple-point phonon, 4-fold Dirac point phonon, and 6-fold point phonon. Moreover, these nodal-point phonons are very robust to uniform strain. Two obvious phonon surface arcs of the [001] plane are extended in the whole Brillouin zone, which will facilitate their detection in future experimental studies. The current work provides an ideal model to investigate the rich excitations in a single material.

Quantum tomography is an important tool for the characterisation of quantum operations. In this paper, we present a framework of quantum tomography in fermionic systems. Compared with qubit systems, fermions obey the superselection rule, which sets constraints on states, processes and measurements in a fermionic system. As a result, we can only partly reconstruct an operation that acts on a subset of fermion modes, and the full reconstruction always requires at least one ancillary fermion mode in addition to the subset. We also report a protocol for the full reconstruction based on gates in Majorana fermion quantum computer, including a set of circuits for realising the informationally-complete state preparation and measurement.

Understanding the physical processes involved in interfacial heat transfer is critical for the interpretation of thermometric measurements and the optimization of heat dissipation in nanoelectronic devices that are based on transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors. We model the phononic and electronic contributions to the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) variability for the MoS$_{2}$-SiO$_{2}$ and WS$_{2}$-SiO$_{2}$ interface. A phenomenological theory to model diffuse phonon transport at disordered interfaces is introduced and yields $G$=13.5 and 12.4 MW/K/m$^{2}$ at 300 K for the MoS$_{2}$-SiO$_{2}$ and WS$_{2}$-SiO$_{2} $ interface, respectively. We compare its predictions to those of the coherent phonon model and find that the former fits the MoS$_{2}$-SiO$_{2}$ data from experiments and simulations significantly better. Our analysis suggests that heat dissipation at the TMD-SiO$_{2}$ interface is dominated by phonons scattered diffusely by the rough interface although the electronic TBC contribution can be significant even at low electron densities ($n\leq10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$) and may explain some of the variation in the experimental TBC data from the literature.
