203. Enhancing the Thermal Comfort of Woven Fabrics and Mechanical Properties of Fiber-Reinforced Composites Using Multiple Weave Structures

Abstract

In this study, the different effects of weave structure on the comfort properties of fabrics and the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites were investigated. Fabrics were developed using one type of material (flax spun yarn) in the warp direction and three different materials (flax, sisal and cotton spun yarn) in the weft directions. Four different types of weaves (plain, twill, matt and mock leno) were produced in each type of material. Twelve specimens were produced on a sample weaving machine. These fabrics with multiweave combinations give the wearer a comfort zone for sportswear and outdoor applications. These fabrics maintain the temperature of wearers in extreme weather conditions. But these weaves have different effects when interlaced with different types of weft yarns. Air permeability, overall moisture management, stiffness and thermal resistance were investigated for these fabric specimens. The hybrid fabric produced with pure flax warp and weft cotton/sisal exhibited the highest value of air permeability, overall moisture management capability and thermal resistance followed by flax–sisal and flax–flax. The hybrid fabric produced with the mock leno weave also presented a higher value of air permeability compared to the twill, mat and plain weaves. Bending stiffness was observed to be higher in those fabrics produced with flax/sisal compared to pure flax and flax–cotton. The outerwear fabric produced with a blend of flax yarn in the warp and cotton/sisal spun yarn in the weft exhibited improved properties when compared to the fabric produced with flax/sisal and pure flax yarns. In composites, flax/flax showed enhanced mechanical properties, i.e., tensile and flexural strength. In other combinations, the composites with longer weaves possessed prominent mechanical characteristics. The composites with enhanced mechanical properties can be used for window coverings, furniture upholstery and sports equipment. These composites have the potential to be used in automotive applications.

216. The SchoolWeavers Tool: Supporting School Leaders to Weave Learning Ecosystems

Abstract

Social capital has recently emerged as an effective approach to rethink schools as wider learning ecosystems where students, teachers and families have greater access to learning resources through social interaction. Literature has not provided research-based assessment tools that document school leaders' abilities to weave social relationships between actors within the school and across the community. This paper presents an international experts' validation of the SchoolWeavers Tool, an online resource that supports school leaders to assess the health and potential of their school ecosystem and provides meaningful feedback to weave social and professional capital and lift learning opportunities and educational goals. Theoretical validation was conducted in the first round by 15 experts from 8 countries with prior experience in network leadership in education, and in the second round, with 54 school actors from the same 8 countries. The final model provides an internationally validated tool that supports school leaders' capacities to improve collective effectiveness, internal and external collaboration, innovation and equity. Furthermore, the Tool creates research opportunities by allowing school leaders and researchers to collaborate and support systemic impact and sustainable improvement.

228. The weave of presence : a creative and critical exploration of the enactment of animal subjectivity in poetry

Abstract

This finite planet, radically altered by human activity, faces both climate change and biodiversity loss. We urgently need to recognise our connectedness and interdependence with the more-than-human world, yet human estrangement from nonhuman nature persists. This thesis explores poetry's potential role to re-connect us with nature, particularly other animals. Specifically, it explores, critically and creatively, the poetic enactment of nonhuman subjectivity, and animal presence. Theoretical approaches informing the project include Martin Buber's study of 'I-Thou' modes of relating to the world; Iain McGilchrist's examination of left and right brain hemisphere differences; Ralph Acampora's concept of symphysis, and posthumanism's challenges to human exceptionalism. I also explore the implications of going 'beyond the brain', privileging instead embodiment and whole living creatures. The thesis comprises three chapters investigating animal senses, emotions, and language, together with examples of how these have been enacted poetically, drawn from the work of Les Murray, Elizabeth Bishop and others. A collection of poetry titled '... the weave of presence' explores the ideas examined in the critical section. Both critical and creative elements of the thesis are informed by science as well as the humanities. In investigating the poetic enactment of nonhuman animals, I draw on the work of Scott Knickerbocker ('sensuous poesis'), Randy Malamud ('empathetic imagination'), and Aaron Moe's attention to animals' 'bodily poiesis'. I embrace both Malamud's 'ecocritical aesthetic', and Michael Malay's conceptualisation of 'seeing poetically'. Through investigating animal senses, emotion, and language, I conclude that while humans are evolutionarily connected to other animals, it is important to respect and celebrate animals' alterity. Further, while poetry has a role in re-connecting humans empathically with the more-than-human world, poetry is not the only means of accomplishing this, and on its own is insufficient. Finally, poetry's 'creatureliness' can enable, albeit imperfectly, the poetic enactment of animal being.

Abstract

Continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites having superior mechanical properties are preferred for lightweight architectures. Rising demands for enhanced mechanical performance under certain types of loadings have focused researchers toward the hybridization of composite materials. In this study carbon and aramid fibers were employed to produce hybrid fabrics by weaving in two different woven architectures, 1/1 plain and 2/1 twill. Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) matrix was reinforced with these woven fabrics and hybrid composites were fabricated by compression molding. Un-hybrid carbon and aramid composites were fabricated using PVB matrix, as control samples. Tensile characteristics of hybrid composites offered intermediate strain at failures of 0.5% due to the combined rigid and ductile natures of carbon and aramid, respectively. Flexural strength and absorbed impact energy (200 MPa and 97 kJ/m 2 ) were higher for hybrid composites, and quick elastic recoveries were experienced in hybrid composites after impact. Plain woven reinforced hybridization had about 25% and 5% lower tensile and flexural characteristics respectively, as more interlocking zones of warp and weft yarns reduced strength. However, these interlocking zones positively contributed to impact performance by 11.5% higher energy absorption.

Abstract

Massive MIMO is bringing significant performance improvements in the context of outdoor macrocells, such as favourable propagation conditions, spatially confined communication, high antenna gains to overcome pathloss, and good angular localisation. In this paper we explore how these benefits scale to indoor scattering-rich deployments based on a dense indoor measured Massive MIMO dataset. First, we design and implement three different and relevant topologies to position our 64 antennas in the environment: \emph{Massive MIMO, RadioStripes} and \emph{RadioWeaves} topologies. Second, we measure 252004 indoor channels for a $3x3m^2$ area for each topology, using an automated user-positioning and measurement system. Using this dense dataset, we provide a unique analysis of system level properties such as pathloss, favourable propagation, spatial focusing and localisation performance. Our measurement-based analyses verify and quantify that distributing the antennas throughout the environment results in an improved propagation fairness, better favourable propagation conditions, higher spatial confinement and finally a high localisation performance. The dataset is publicly available and can serve as a reference database for benchmarking of future indoor communication systems and communication models. We outline the implementation challenges we observed, and also list diverse R\&D challenges that can benefit from using this dataset as a benchmark.

Abstract

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable ‘mini’ integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366-959 nm at R ~ 5000, or two shorter ranges at R ~ 20¿000. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy’s origins by completing Gaia’s phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for ~3 million stars and detailed abundances for ~1.5 million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey ~0.4 million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey ~400 neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in z < 0.5 cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in ~25¿000 field galaxies at 0.3 ¿ z ¿ 0.7; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using >1 million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at z > 2. Abstract

En este Trabajo de Fin de Grado se han analizado de manera cuantitativa una muestra de espectros ópticos de estrellas tipo OB. Las estrellas masivas tipo OB incluyen todos los tipos O y aquellas de tipo B2 o anteriores en el caso de las enanas, tipo B5 o anteriores en el caso de las gigantes, y todos los subtipos B en el caso de las supergigantes (clases de luminosidad I o II). El estudio de estas estrellas es de gran importancia para comprender mejor la estructura y evolución del Universo ya que entre sus características principales destaca que en las reacciones nucleares que tienen lugar en su interior se producen los elementos más pesados del Universo, como el hierro, y cuando estas estrellas explotan en forma de supernova expulsan estos elementos al espacio y posteriormente se incorporan en nuevas estrellas y planetas. Además, las estrellas tipo OB producen radiación ultravioleta y vientos estelares energéticos que afectan al medio interestelar y a la formación de nuevas estrellas y planetas. Los objetivos principales de este proyecto han sido determinar los parámetros estelares de una muestra de estrellas OB cuyos espectros se simularon para ser parecidos a los que obtendrá WEAVE, espectrógrafo situado en el telescopio William Herschel del observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos en España, a partir de datos existentes en la base de datos IACOB. Los resultados obtenidos permitirán conocer el grado de precisión de los parámetros que se obtengan a partir de los datos reales WEAVE, aportando un input necesario para su interpretación. Para todo ello, se ha realizado un estudio bibliográfico sobre WEAVE, los surveys asociados que implican estrellas OB y las técnicas de análisis de este tipo de estrellas. En primer lugar, se han recopilado datos fotómetricos y astrométricos de la muestra de estrellas OB seleccionada para WEAVE, haciendo uso de la herramienta TOPCAT. Abstract

In the forensic studies of painting masterpieces, the analysis of the support is of major importance. For plain weave fabrics, the densities of vertical and horizontal threads are used as main features, while angle deviations from the vertical and horizontal axis are also of help. These features can be studied locally through the canvas. In this work, deep learning is proposed as a tool to perform these local densities and angle studies. We trained the model with samples from 36 paintings by Velázquez, Rubens or Ribera, among others. The data preparation and augmentation are dealt with at a first stage of the pipeline. We then focus on the supervised segmentation of crossing points between threads. The U-Net with inception and Dice loss are presented as good choices for this task. Densities and angles are then estimated based on the segmented crossing points. We report test results of the analysis of a few canvases and a comparison with methods in the frequency domain, widely used in this problem. We concluded that this new approach successes in some cases where the frequency analysis tools fail, while improves the results in others. Besides, our proposal does not need the labeling of part of the to be processed image. As case studies, we apply this novel algorithm to the analysis of two pairs of canvases by Velázquez and Murillo, to conclude that the fabrics used came from the same roll.

Abstract

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable ‘mini’ integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366−959 nm at R ∼ 5000, or two shorter ranges at R ∼ 20 000. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy’s origins by completing Gaia’s phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for ∼3 million stars and detailed abundances for ∼1.5 million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey ∼0.4 million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey ∼400 neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in z < 0.5 cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in ∼25 000 field galaxies at 0.3 ≲ z ≲ 0.7; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using >1 million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at z > 2. Finally, we describe the WEAVE Operational Rehearsals using the WEAVE Simulator.

Abstract

Context. With its origin coming from several sources (Big Bang, stars, cosmic rays) and given its strong depletion during its stellar lifetime, the lithium element is of great interest as its chemical evolution in the Milky Way is not well understood at present. To help constrain stellar and galactic chemical evolution models, numerous and precise lithium abundances are necessary for a large range of evolutionary stages, metallicities, and Galactic volume.Aims. In the age of stellar parametrization on industrial scales, spectroscopic surveys such as APOGEE, GALAH, RAVE, and LAMOST have used data-driven methods to rapidly and precisely infer stellar labels (atmospheric parameters and abundances). To prepare the ground for future spectroscopic surveys such as 4MOST and WEAVE, we aim to apply machine learning techniques to lithium measurements and analyses.Methods. We trained a convolution neural network (CNN), coupling Gaia-ESO Survey iDR6 stellar labels (T-eff, log(g), [Fe/H], and A(Li)) and GIRAFFE HR15N spectra, to infer the atmospheric parameters and lithium abundances for similar to 40 000 stars. The CNN architecture and accompanying notebooks are available online via GitHub.Results. We show that the CNN properly learns the physics of the stellar labels, from relevant spectral features through a broad range of evolutionary stages and stellar parameters. The lithium feature at 6707.8 angstrom is successfully singled out by our CNN, among the thousands of lines in the GIRAFFE HR15N setup. Rare objects such as lithium-rich giants are found in our sample. This level of performance is achieved thanks to a meticulously built, high-quality, and homogeneous training sample.Conclusions. The CNN approach is very well adapted for the next generations of spectroscopic surveys aimed at studying (among other elements) lithium, such as the 4MIDABLE-LR/HR (4MOST Milky Way disk and bulge low- and high-resolution) surveys.
