Introduction: The recommended treatment for exertional heat stroke is immediate, whole-body immersion in < 10 °C water until rectal temperature (Tre) reaches ≤ 38.6 °C. However, real-time Tre assessment is not always feasible or available in field settings or emergency situations. We defined and validated immersion durations for water temperatures of 2–26 °C for treating exertional heat stroke. Methods: We compiled data for 54 men and 18 women from 7 previous laboratory studies and derived immersion durations for reaching 38.6 °C Tre. The resulting immersion durations were validated against the durations of cold-water immersion used to treat 162 (98 men; 64 women) exertional heat stroke cases at the Falmouth Road Race between 1984 and 2011. Results: Age, height, weight, body surface area, body fat, fat mass, lean body mass, and peak oxygen uptake were weakly associated with the cooling time to a safe Tre of 38.6 °C during immersions to 2–26 °C water (R2 range: 0.00–0.16). Using a specificity criterion of 0.9, receiver operating characteristics curve analysis showed that exertional heat stroke patients must be immersed for 11–12 min when water temperature is ≤ 9 °C, and for 18–19 min when water temperature is 10–26 °C (Cohen's Kappa: 0.32–0.75, p < 0.001; diagnostic odds ratio: 8.63–103.27). Conclusion: The reported immersion durations are effective for > 90% of exertional heat stroke patients with pre-immersion Tre of 39.5–42.8 °C. When available, real-time Tre monitoring is the standard of care to accurately diagnose and treat exertional heat stroke, avoiding adverse health outcomes associated with under- or over-cooling, and for implementing cool-first transport second exertional heat stroke policies. The bonding performance between a thin overlay and the pavement is an important basis for good performance of asphalt pavement. To research the effect of interlayer bonding on the fatigue life of thin overlays, three-point bending fatigue test was carried out on the double-layer beams with interlayer (DLBI). The equivalent fatigue life obtained by the Weibull distribution function was used to analyze the influence of stress ratio, loading frequency, immersion times, and freeze–thaw cycles on the fatigue life. The results suggest that the fatigue performance of DLBI was affected significantly by stress ratio, loading frequency, immersion times, and freeze–thaw cycles. The higher the loading frequency, the greater the effect of the stress ratio on the fatigue performance of the DLBI. The lower the stress ratio, the greater the effect of the loading frequency on fatigue performance of the DLBI. The fatigue life of the DLBI declined by 31.4% and 24.7% after 6 immersion days and five freeze–thaw cycles, respectively. The damage to DLBI caused by one freeze–thaw cycle was equivalent to that caused by 4 days of immersion. Models that take into account four kinds of environment factors to equivalent fatigue life prediction based on 50% failure probability and 5% failure probability, respectively, are proposed, with the equivalent fatigue life method. Taking the equivalent fatigue life as the indicator, the DLBI crack length expansion model is obtained, and the axle load conversion coefficients considering the influence of dynamic loads and adverse seasons factors are calculated. New bioactive materials were introduced to not only restore the lost dental hard tissue but also to release fluoride that inhibits demineralization and occurrence of secondary caries. The current study thus aims to assess Fluoride release as well as the mechanical and physical properties of two new commercially available bioactive restorative materials. Two materials, Cention® Forte (CF) (Ivoclar Vivadent), Surefil one™ (SO) (Denstply Sirona), were evaluated in terms of fracture toughness (FT), flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM) (ISO 4049), compressive strength (CS), and Vickers hardness (VH). In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed, as well as pH measurements and quantification of Fluoride release after immersion in distilled water at times of 0, 7, 14 and 21 days. The sealing ability was evaluated using silver nitrate dye penetration on natural teeth. Finally, Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) was used to investigate the surface composition of the two studied material surfaces. The data were statistically analyzed using Independent T-Tests; the chosen significance level was α = 0.05. CF had significantly higher FT values compared to SO (p = 0.001). Also the FS results showed that CF had significantly higher values (90.11 MPa), followed by SO (22.15 MPa). The CS values showed the same order with significantly higher values for CF (231.79 MPa). While the FM and VH showed the reverse order with SO having significantly higher values than CF. pH measurements showed that CF evolved towards significantly higher pH values after 3 weeks in distilled water, while thermal properties showed more stability and higher resistance to degradation for CF compared to SO. The silver nitrate penetration results showed significantly better sealing ability for CF compared to the self-adhesive SO. Finally, EDX surface analysis results were consistent with the release profiles and confirmed the composition of the two tested materials. Both materials, demonstrated enhanced Fluoride release ability, and hence good remineralisation potential in vitro that could prevent recurrent carious lesions in vivo. Water skipping is a common physical phenomenon that represents a complex multiphase fluid–structure coupling problem involving a gas, liquid, and solid. This phenomenon is observed in various scenarios, such as seaplane landings, the entry and exit of amphibious aircraft on water surfaces, and even the slamming of a ship bow, all of which involve intricate water skipping dynamics. Therefore, skipping dynamics hold significant research value and offer broad practical applications. In this paper, a numerical method involving the volume of fluid method and boundary data immersion method is presented to study the fluid–structure interaction of a disk undergoing water skipping. Moreover, the six degrees of freedom motion of the rigid disk is described by unit quaternions. We validated the accuracy of our numerical method through comparisons with the experimental data. The results show good agreement on the disk's trajectory and cavity evolution. Furthermore, we studied the influence of the rotational angular velocity on the disk's trajectory, velocity, acceleration, hydrodynamic force, and cavity dynamics. As the angular velocity increases, the disk undergoes shorter collision durations with the water, diminished alterations in the azimuth angles, faster exit velocities, and faster velocity attenuations. Moisture in the insulation of distribution cable accessories is one of the important causes of insulation degradation and discharge failure of the accessories. The changes in the insulation properties of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) and silicone rubber (SIR) with the time of dampness are studied, and the mechanism of dampness is revealed by combining the surface water absorption characteristics and functional group analysis. The results show that the hydrophobicity of EPDM specimens is lower than that of SIR, resulting in the electrical properties of EPDM being significantly lower than those of SIR after water immersion. The resistivity and the flashover voltage of both specimens decrease significantly with the increase of moisture exposure time, and the decrease of EPDM is more obvious than that of SIR. The breakdown voltage of EPDM decreases by 26.6% and that of SIR decreased by 13.06%. Besides, the flashover voltage along the surface of both EPDM and SIR decreases with the increase of water immersion time, and the decreasing trend of both of them is basically the same. Structural changes in rat hepatocyte nucleoli were studied during deep hypothermia simulated by immersion in water at 5°C for 40 min (ambient air temperature 7°C). In comparison with the control, phenomena of nucleolar stress occurred in rats during hypothermia: the number of fibrillar centers (FC) per nucleus (by 1.7 times) and per nucleolus (by 1.6 times), nucleolonemal nucleoli per nucleus (by 2.8 times), and the relative content of nucleolonemal nucleoli per nucleus (by 2.6 times) significantly decreased (p=0.0000001); the number of FC per nucleolonemal nucleolus also decreased by 1.4 times (p=0.01). In the hepatocyte nuclei, we observed an increase in the relative content of transitional type nucleoli per nucleus (by 1.3 times; p=0.01), the number of FC per transitional type nucleolus (by 1.4 times; p=0.003), the content of free FC per nucleus (by 3 times; p=0.00004), and the percentage of free FC per nucleus (by 3.5 times; p=0.00004). This work presents a heat transfer and boiling model that computes the evolution of the temperature field in a representative steel workpiece quenched from 850 or 930 °C by immersion in water flowing at average velocities of 0.2 or 0.6 m/s, respectively. Under these conditions, all three boiling regimes were present during cooling: stable vapor film, nucleate boiling, and single-phase convection. The model was based on the numerical solution of the heat conduction equation coupled to the solution of the energy and momentum equations for water. The mixture phase approach was adopted using the Lee model to compute the rates of water evaporation–condensation. Heat flux at the wall was calculated for all regimes using a single semi-mechanistic model. Therefore, the evolution of boiling regimes at every position on the wall surface was automatically determined. Predictions were validated using laboratory results, namely: (a) videorecording the upward motion of the wetting front along the workpiece wall surface; and (b) cooling curves obtained with embedded thermocouples in the steel probe. Wall heat flux calculations were used to determine the importance of the simultaneous presence of all three boiling regimes on the heat flux distribution. It was found that this simultaneous presence leads to high heat flux variations that should be avoided in production lines. In addition, it was determined that the corresponding inverse heat conduction problem to estimate the active heat transfer boundary condition must be set-up for 2D heat flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The transient lubrication conditions of rolling bearings are different in gearboxes and bearing testers. It has been observed that samples of qualified rolling bearings tested in rolling bearing testers often fail and do not meet lifespan requirements when employed in other lubrication conditions. This may be caused by different factors affecting the bearing in testing and applying lubrication. Needle roller bearings were selected for this study to investigate the causes of this phenomenon in terms of lubrication. Based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, fluid domain models for the same type of rolling bearings with different lubrication conditions were established. The transient flow fields of rolling bearings with oil jet lubrication in a tester and splash lubrication in a planetary gearbox were simulated. The air–oil transient distribution of rolling bearings in two kinds of lubrication was analyzed. The results indicate that the rotational speed significantly affected the oil jet lubrication of the needle roller bearing. The average oil volume fraction rose by 0.2 with the increase in the bearing speed from 1200 r/min to 6000 r/min and by 0.06 with the increase in the oil jet velocity from 8 m/s to 16 m/s. The splash lubrication of the bearings in the planetary gearbox was directly related to the immersion depth of the rolling bearings in the initial position. Meanwhile, the splash lubrication of the bearings was also affected by other factors, including the initial layout of the planetary gears. The increase in speed from 1200 r/min to 6000 r/min made the average oil volume fraction of splash lubrication decrease by 4.4%. The average oil volume fraction of the bearings with splash lubrication was better than that with oil jet lubrication by an average of 41.9% when the bearing speed was in the low-speed stage, ranging from 1200 r/min to 3600 r/min. On the contrary, the bearings with oil jet lubrication were better than those with splash lubrication by an average of 31.8% when the bearing speed was in the high-speed stage, ranging from 4800 r/min to 6000 r/min. This research aims to evaluate the physical and mechanical performance of three types of hybrid composites made of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) (DP), additional layers of cotton (DP/C) and Kevlar fibres (DP/K). The fibres were formed into flat sheets and employed as reinforcement layers embedded in a polyester matrix. Three-layer and five-layer hybrid composites were created using the hand layup method. The layers have alternative longitudinal–transversal orientation. The composites were investigated for density, thickness swelling (TS), water absorption (WA), flexural strength and modulus of elasticity (MOE) properties. Moreover, the composites were subjected to cycles of water immersion, freezing and drying, and the changes in mass and mechanical performance were analysed before and after the cyclic testing. The hybrid composite with Kevlar as the inner layers displayed better physical and mechanical properties when compared to the other two hybrid composites. A stereo-microscopic investigation revealed that poor adhesion between the layers of composites contributed to a reduction in the mechanical properties of DP/C and DP hybrid composites. The DP/C composite had the highest thickness swelling and water absorption, with the water uptake more pronounced than in the cases of the other composites. This research was conducted to investigate, experimentally, theoretically, and numerically, the use of CFRP materials for repairing a reinforced concrete one-way solid slab exposed to thermal shock. Nine slabs, measuring 1800 mm in length, 500 mm in width, and 100 mm in depth, were cast. Seven of these slabs underwent thermal shock at a temperature of 600 °C, rapidly cooled by immersion in water for 15 min. Three primary parameters were examined: the type of CFRP (rope, strip, and sheet), spacing (100 and 200 mm), and the number of sheet layers (one and two). The experimental results revealed a significant decrease of approximately 45.4% in the compressive strength of the concrete after exposure to thermal shock. The thermally shocked RC slab showed a reduction in ultimate capacity by 15.4% and 38.5% in stiffness compared to the control slab. The results underscored the efficacy of CFRP materials, with all repair configurations exhibiting a substantial increase in maximum load capacity and stiffness. Capacity enhancement ranged from 23.7% to 53.4%, while stiffness improvement ranged from 27.6% to 57.1%. Notably, all repair configurations effectively minimized the maximum deflection. This reduction in deflection ranged from 5.2% to 26% compared to the control slab. Numerical results demonstrated strong concurrence with experimental results for both capacity and deflection. The enhancement in capacity ranged from 0.7% to 10.4%, while deflection decreased within a range from 0.95% to 14.16% compared to experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kevlar fibers are widely used for industrial and military purposes due to their remarkable mechanical properties, such as their high tenacity and high strength-to-weight ratio. In this study, two-layered Kevlar composite specimens were impregnated with 10 wt.% poly (vinyl butyral)/ethanol solution which contained TiO2 nanoparticles as reinforcement. The concentrations of the nanoparticles were 1 wt.% or 2 wt.% with respect to the poly (vinyl butyral), PVB. The single-axial tensile test and three-point bending test of the Kevlar/PVB composites have been performed according to the ASTM D 3039 and ASTM D 790-03 standards, respectively. The tensile and bending properties of the dry and wet Kevlar/PVB composite specimens after a 56-day immersion are examined in this work. Upon the addition of the 2 wt.% TiO2 nanoparticles, the tensile strength and modulus of the dry specimens without reinforcement were increased by 39.8% and 24.3%, respectively. All the submerged specimens' tensile and flexural property values were lower than those of the dry specimens. After comparing the wet composite specimens to their dry counterparts, the percentage decrease in tensile strength was approximately 20%. The wet Kevlar/PVB specimens with no TiO2 reinforcement showed the greatest reduction in bending strength, 61.4% less than for the dry Kevlar/PVB specimens, due to the degradation of the PVB matrix. Background: Although there is scientific evidence regarding the use of water immersion during labor, this evidence is primarily focused on the first stage of labor. There is limited scientific evidence on water immersion during the second stage of labor. Objective: The objective of this study was to conduct a comprehensive systematic review and synthesis of contemporary evidence related to water birth, with a specific focus on the second stage of labor. Methods: A systematic review of the scientific literature published between January 2018 and October 2023 was carried out. A synthesis of the results was conducted following the Synthesis without Meta-Analysis (SWiM) guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library were utilized as information sources. The search strategy was designed using the keywords "immersion" and "parturition", along with their relevant synonyms. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies employing randomized controlled trials (RCTs), systematic reviews, and quantitative and qualitative approaches focusing on pregnant women undergoing water immersion at any stage of the labor process. Results: Eleven articles were selected: two systematic reviews (one quantitative and one qualitative), five cohort studies, one case–control study, one cross-sectional observational study, and two qualitative studies. A thorough assessment of the methodology was performed using several specific tools: the Cochrane RoB 2 (Risk of Bias 2) tool for systematic reviews, JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research for qualitative studies, STROBE for observational descriptive studies, and CASPe for qualitative studies. The results provided fundamental insights that will contribute to conceptual standardization regarding the effects of water birth on maternal and fetal health. Additionally, a synthesis of the results was performed concerning types of delivery, analgesia use, pain perception, and maternal satisfaction with the water birth experience. Conclusions: In this study, we conclude that the results regarding delivery types, labor durations, and analgesia use found in the literature, along with statistically significant maternal/fetal effects, are crucial for making recommendations regarding the use of water during labor in any of its stages if the woman desires it safely. Breath-hold diving has been traditionally practiced for professional and recreational reasons and has recently emerged as a competitive sport. The physiological response during breath-holding, also known as diving response, consists mainly of bradycardia and peripheral vasoconstriction. Elite apneists can suppress the urge to breathe, sustain greater arterial desaturation and develop pronounced bradycardia, thus accomplishing impressively long breath-hold times. This study explored physiological responses during static apnea and their association with apnea duration in breath-hold divers with high physiological adaptations acquired from long-term apnea training. Nine well-trained competitive divers held their breath for as long as possible while floating motionlessly in a swimming pool (26–27 °C), simulating an actual “static apnea competition”. Long apnea durations (302 ± 60 s) as well as severe oxygen desaturation (minSaO2 46 ± 11%) and bradycardia (minHR 49 ± 8 bpm) were achieved. Apnea duration was positively correlated with forced vital capacity (r = 0.771) and apnea duration until initiation of desaturation (r = 0.736) and negatively correlated with minSaO2 (r = −0.672) (p < 0.05). Moreover, minHR during apnea was correlated with pre-apneic hemoglobin concentration (r = 0.685) (p < 0.05). The prolonged apnea durations achieved by the well-trained divers in this study, while performing maximum immersed static apnea under competitive simulated conditions, were related to their high lung volumes and their delayed and profound O2 desaturation, whereas their bradycardic response was not a decisive factor.

Background: Adequate pain relief during childbirth is a very important issue for women and healthcare providers. This study investigates the effects on maternal and neonatal outcomes of two analgesic methods during labor: water immersion and epidural analgesia. Methods: In this retrospective observational cohort study at a first-level hospital, in Spain, from 2009 to 2019, 1134 women, low-risk singleton and at term pregnancy, were selected. Among them, 567 women used water immersion; 567 women used epidural analgesia for pain control. Maternal outcomes included mode of birth and perineum condition. Neonatal outcomes included 5 min Apgar score, umbilical cord arterial pH, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit admissions. Chi-square tests and Mann–Whitney U tests, together with their effect sizes (Cramer’s V, odds ratio, and Cohen’s d) were used to test the main hypotheses. Results: Spontaneous vaginal birth was almost 17 times more likely in the water immersion group (OR = 16.866 [6.540, 43.480], p < 0.001), whereas the odds of having a cesarean birth were almost 40 times higher in the epidural group (OR = 39.346 [3.610, 429.120], p < 0.001). The odds of having an intact perineum were more than two times higher for the water immersion group (OR = 2.606 [1.290, 5.250], p = 0.007), whereas having an episiotomy was more than eight times more likely for the epidural group (OR = 8.307 [2.800, 24.610], p < 0.001). Newborns in the water immersion group showed a better 5 min Apgar score and umbilical cord arterial pH and lower rates in admissions at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Conclusions: Women choosing water immersion as an analgesic method were no more likely to experience adverse outcomes and presented better results than women choosing epidural analgesia.

Exercising using an underwater treadmill (UTM) has become a popular modality; however, few studies have focused on the physiological demands of UTM walking at varying water depths. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate changes in heart rate (HR) and core temperature (CT) values in college-aged males and females while exercising at different water immersion depths using an UTM. Twenty participants (age = 21.50 ± 2.19 years; height = 169.04 ± 10.85cm; weight = 75.56 ± 22.28kg) walked at water depths of 10cm below the xiphoid process and at the level of the superior iliac crest (I.C.). Each UTM session lasted 15 minutes, consisting of 5-minute bouts at 1, 2, and 3 mph. Polar HR monitors and ingestible thermoregulatory pills were used to measure HR and CT. Results indicated that HR at 1 (p = .305) and 2 mph (p = .864) were not significantly different between water depths. Heart rate was significantly higher at 3 mph (p = .003) at the I.C. water level. No significant differences were found in CT at 1 (p = .919), 2 (p = .392), or 3 mph (p = .310) during either immersion depth. As a result, higher immersion depths resulted in a lower average HR during higher intensity exercise due to the increased buoyancy effects and the reduced gravity environment of the water. Thus, exercising in higher immersion depths allows participants to exercise at a higher intensity with less overall stress placed on the lower extremities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microwave maintenance technology, as a new development trend, can realize the environmentally noninvasive and rapid repair of asphalt pavement and gradually replace traditional maintenance methods. Iron tailings were used as a self-healing material in this study to investigate the temperature response matching of microwave maintenance technology. Firstly, the physical properties and the mechanism of iron tailings were elaborated through macroscopic physical index testing and microscopic X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Secondly, the applicability of aggregates to microwave heating was demonstrated by analyzing the temperature rise characteristics of the granules using infrared imaging. Then, the temperature field variation rules of the iron tailing asphalt mixture were summarized by microwave heating Marshall specimens. Finally, the road performance was assessed by conducting high-temperature dynamic stability, low-temperature tensile, water immersion Marshall, and freeze-thaw splitting tests. The experimental results showed that the iron tailings can be used as an aggregate for high-grade asphalt pavement and as the preferred aggregate for microwave maintenance technology. The iron tailings temperature field was radial from the inside out to provide different temperature response states for different pavement diseases, so the asphalt was dissolved and precipitated in a short time. The particle size of iron tailings was inversely proportional to the wave-absorbing heating rate, and the heating efficiency of the small particle size (0–4.75 mm) was the highest. The specimens doped with 4.75–13.2 mm iron tailings showed the best heating performance and road performance, with the average surface temperature of the specimens reaching 126.0 °C within 2 min. In summary, according to different disease types and construction needs, iron tailings can be used as an aggregate for asphalt pavement, providing an appropriate temperature field and improving the efficiency of the microwave maintenance of asphalt pavements. Hydrothermal aging is a matter of considerable concern for natural fiber-reinforced polymers; it can alter dimensional stability and induce microcracks and macro strain on the composite structure. This study applied a sorption kinetic model and examined the effects of water on the damping factor of sisal mat-reinforced polyester composites. The experimental data were fitted well using a Boltzmann sigmoid function, suggesting a promising first step toward kinetic water sorption modeling. Additionally, a damping test was carried out using the impulse excitation technique, highlighting the composite material's dynamic response under varying water absorption conditions. The result showed that damping exhibited sensitivity to water absorption, increasing significantly during the first 24 h of immersion in water, then remained steady over time, inferring a critical time interval. An empirical model proved satisfactory with the correlation coefficient for sorption rates and damping of sisal mat polymeric composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research, the effect of adding aluminum oxide nanoparticles on the flexural strength of glass/phenolic composites that were exposed to water environment was experimentally investigated. To make glass/phenolic composites, IL‐800 phenolic resin, H002 hardener, T400 bidirectional glass fibers and Al2O3 nanoparticles were used. Four‐layer composite plates were made by hand layup method. Beam‐shaped samples were extracted from the plates with the help of laser cutting method. Rectangular composite beams made of glass/phenolic and Al2O3/glass/phenolic were subjected to three‐point flexural test. The moisture absorption test was continued until the amount of water absorption reached a constant level. Bending test was performed on the samples before and after immersion in water. Based on the results, the average flexural strength of the samples after water absorption shows a decrease of about 15%. This parameter is equal to 118.96 MPa for glass/phenolic composite samples immersed in water, and by adding 0.25 wt% of Al2O3 nanoparticles into the matrix material of glass/phenolic composite samples, the flexural strength reaches 142.54 MPa, which shows an increase of 19.82% compared to samples without nanoparticles. Furthermore, the amount of flexural modulus decreases after water absorption, and the addition of nanoparticles in the base material can compensate this reduction. Scanning electron microscopy images illustrate that the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles into the phenolic resin can enhance the strength of matrix material and improve the adhesion of glass fibers to the resin. Introduction Immersing and swimming in cold water is an increasingly popular sport that has recently become a fashionable form of recreation in the winter months. People who regularly swim in cold water mention the many benefits associated with it. Aim of the study This review aims to present the current state of knowledge about immersion and swimming in cold water and to answer questions about the impact of this phenomenon on the human body and its health benefits. Materials and methods The PubMed database was used in this study.A literature review was conducted using the keywords "ice swimming," "winter swimming," "cold water swimming," and "cold water immersion". Results Much research has been done on the effects of cold water swimming, both positive and negative. Ice swimming affects many systems of our body, including the circulatory system, the immune system, and the endocrine system, and also affects metabolic and mental changes in our body, as shown in the work below. Summary A single immersion in cold water causes a stress reaction in the human body, while regular swimming in cold water causes the body to develop many positive physiological changes. In sports, physical recovery following exercise‐induced fatigue is mediated via the reactivation of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). A noninvasive way to quantify the reactivation of the PNS is to assess vagally‐mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV), which can then be used as an index of physical recovery. This systematic review and meta‐analysis investigated the effects of physical recovery techniques following exercise‐induced fatigue on vmHRV, specifically via the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD). Randomized controlled trials from the databases PubMed, WebOfScience, and SportDiscus were included. Twenty‐four studies were part of the systematic review and 17 were included in the meta‐analysis. Using physical post‐exercise recovery techniques displayed a small to moderate positive effect on RMSSD (k = 22, Hedges' g = 0.40, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.20–0.61, p = 0.04) with moderate heterogeneity. In the subgroup analyses, cold water immersion displayed a moderate to large positive effect (g = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.42–1.07) compared with none for other techniques. For exercise type, physical recovery techniques performed after resistance exercise (g = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.48–0.89) demonstrated a larger positive effect than after cardiovascular intermittent (g = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.06–0.97), while physical recovery techniques performed after cardiovascular continuous exercise had no effect. No significant subgroup differences for training status and exercise intensity were observed. With the increase in asphalt mixtures sustainability, the application of waste as a bitumen modifier has been encouraged. In addition, the asphalt mixtures produced considering only the engineering properties show degradation due to repetitive traffic loading and not the performance properties. Thus, necessitate the use of an alternative mix design considering various properties and considering alternative modifiers. Also, there are limited studies on the impact of long-term water immersion on the strength of asphalt mixtures, particularly the effects of both immersion-drying (I-D) cycles on Palm oil clinker fine-modified bitumen (POCF-MB). Thus, this study employed palm oil clinker fine (POCF) as a bitumen modifier. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to evaluate an alternative engineering and performance mix design technique for asphalt mixtures was examined. Subsequently, the durability and strength of the optimized POCF-MB asphalt mixture for both I-D cycles were evaluated. Samples were vacuum saturated and immersed for 0 (dry) 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. Then assessed in terms of Marshall quotient (MQ), retained Marshall stability (RMS), swelling index (SI), indirect tensile strength (IDT), Indirect tensile strength ratio (ITSR), and subsequently redried at ambient temperature to evaluate the retained durability and strength. The RSM findings show that the synergetic effects of POCF dosage and bitumen significantly impact performance. Based on the high coefficients of determination (R2) values (> 0.95), high adequate precision values (> 4), and low p-values for all responses, the statistical models were determined to be significant and well-fitted. The optimum values of numerical optimization were 5.86% POCF dosage and 4.65% bitumen content. The validation test shows an error margin of < 5% for all responses indicating that the model and experimental values agree well and are closely aligned. With increasing conditioning time, all samples showed increased SI, flow, and a decline in MQ, RMS, IDT, and ITSR. However, POCF-MB samples showed minimal moisture durability reduction, which can be attributed to the hydration process of the POCF, making the mixtures stiffer. After redrying POCF-MB samples show a higher recovery of their initial durability, revealing that the durability and strength properties of the asphalt mixture are recoverable. Sodium taurocholate (NaT) is a hydrophobic bile salt that exhibits varying toxicity and antimicrobial activity. The accumulation of BSs during their entero-hepatic cycle causes cytotoxicity in the liver and intestine and could also alter the intestinal microbiome leading to various diseases. In this research, the acute toxicity of sodium taurocholate in different concentrations (3000 mg/L, 1500 mg/L, 750 mg/L, 375 mg/L, and 0 mg/L) was investigated on four months old zebrafish by immersion in water for 96 h. The results were determined based on the fish mortality, behavioral response, and NMR metabolomics analysis which revealed LC50 of 1760.32 mg/L and 1050.42 mg/L after 72 and 96 h treatment, respectively. However, the non-lethal NaT concentrations of 750 mg/L and 375 mg/L at 96 h exposure significantly (p ≤ 0.05) decreased the total distance traveled and the activity duration, also caused surface respiration on the zebrafish. Orthogonal Projections to Latent Structures Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA) revealed that the metabolome of the fish treated with 750 mg/L was discriminated from that of the control by PC1. Major significantly downregulated metabolites by NaT-induction include valine, isoleucine, 2-hydroxyvalerate, glycine, glycerol, choline, glucose, pyruvate, anserine, threonine, carnitine and homoserine. On the contrary, taurine, creatine, lactate, acetate and 3-hydroxybutyrate were upregulated suggesting cellular consumption of lipids, glucose and amino acids for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation during immune and inflammatory response. whereby these metabolites were released in the process. In this third installment of our four-part historical series, we evaluate contributions that shaped our understanding of heat and cold stress during occupational and athletic pursuits. Our first topic concerns how we tolerate, and sometimes fail to tolerate, exercise-heat stress. By 1900, physical activity with clothing- and climate-induced evaporative impediments led to an extraordinarily high incidence of heat stroke within the military. Fortunately, deep-body temperatures > 40 °C were not always fatal. Thirty years later, water immersion and patient treatments mimicking sweat evaporation were found to be effective, with the adage of cool first, transport later being adopted. We gradually acquired an understanding of thermoeffector function during heat storage, and learned about challenges to other regulatory mechanisms. In our second topic, we explore cold tolerance and intolerance. By the 1930s, hypothermia was known to reduce cutaneous circulation, particularly at the extremities, conserving body heat. Cold-induced vasodilatation hindered heat conservation, but it was protective. Increased metabolic heat production followed, driven by shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis, even during exercise and work. Physical endurance and shivering could both be compromised by hypoglycaemia. Later, treatments for hypothermia and cold injuries were refined, and the thermal after-drop was explained. In our final topic, we critique the numerous indices developed in attempts to numerically rate hot and cold stresses. The criteria for an effective thermal stress index were established by the 1930s. However, few indices satisfied those requirements, either then or now, and the surviving indices, including the unvalidated Wet-Bulb Globe-Thermometer index, do not fully predict thermal strain. Purpose: Recent studies suggest that episodic increases in cerebral blood flow (CBF) may contribute to the improvement in brain health associated with exercise training. Optimising CBF during exercise may enhance this benefit. Water immersion in ~ 30–32 °C augments CBF at rest and during exercise; however, the impact of water temperature on the CBF response has not been investigated. We hypothesised that cycle ergometry in water would increase CBF compared to land-based exercise, and that warm water would attenuate the CBF benefits. Methods: Eleven young heathy participants (nine males; 23.8 ± 3.1 yrs) completed 30 min of resistance-matched cycle exercise in three separate conditions; non-immersion (Land), 32 °C and 38 °C water immersion up to the level of the waist. Middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv), blood pressure, and respiratory measures were assessed throughout the exercise bouts. Results: Core temperature was significantly higher in the 38 °C immersion than 32 °C (+ 0.84 ± 0.24 vs + 0.04 ± 0.16, P < 0.001), whilst mean arterial pressure was lower during 38 °C exercise compared to Land (84 ± 8 vs 100 ± 14 mmHg, P < 0.001) and 32 °C (92 ± 9, P = 0.03). MCAv was higher in 32 °C immersion compared to the Land and 38 °C conditions throughout the exercise bout (68 ± 10 vs 64 ± 11 vs 62 ± 12 cm/s, P = 0.03 and P = 0.02, respectively). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that cycle exercise in warm water attenuates the beneficial impact of water immersion on CBF velocity due to redistribution of blood flow to subserve thermoregulatory demand. We present a remote focusing optical tweezer utilizing a 4f symmetrical optical system to compensate the high-order aberration during annular light refocusing. The position of the optical trap can be adjusted beyond the range of one hundred micrometers in the axial direction by means of tuning the position of the mirror placed in the focal region of the illumination objective lens. This optical tweezer can be combined with a sectioning microscope to realize three-dimensional (3D) imaging, e.g., a confocal microscope using a single water immersion objective lens. All optical elements are placed in one side of the sample, which is very useful for application in fields such as radiation biology, where radiation or magnetism disturbance must be introduced on the other side of the sample. In the experiment, a 10 µm diameter silicon dioxide microsphere and pollen cells immersed in the water are translated along the axis using the optical tweezer and, meanwhile, the sectioning images are obtained using the confocal microscope. Intermittent cold exposure (ICE) has garnered increased attention in popular culture, largely for its proposed effects on mood and immune function, but there are also suggestions that the energy-wasting mechanisms associated with thermogenesis may decrease body weight and fat mass. Considering the continued and worsening prevalence of obesity and type II diabetes, any protocol that can reduce body weight and/or improve metabolic health would be a substantial boon. Here, we present a narrative review exploring the research related to ICE and adipose tissue. Any publicly available original research examining the effects of repeated bouts of ICE on adipose-related outcomes was included. While ICE does not consistently lower body weight or fat mass, there does seem to be evidence for ICE as a positive modulator of the metabolic consequences of obesity, such as glucose tolerance and insulin signaling. Further, ICE consistently increases the activity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) and transitions white adipose tissue to a phenotype more in line with BAT. Lastly, the combined effects of ICE and exercise do not seem to provide any additional benefit, at least when exercising during ICE bouts. The majority of the current literature on ICE is based on rodent models where animals are housed in cold rooms, which does not reflect protocols likely to be implemented in humans such as cold water immersion. Future research could specifically characterize ICE via cold water immersion in combination with controlled calorie intake to clearly determine the effects of ICE as it would be implemented in humans looking to lower their body weight via reductions in fat mass. Lecaniodiscus cupanioides Planch (ex. Benth) is effective in treating burns, fevers, and inflammatory conditions. This study investigates the toxicity effects of the aqueous leaf extract (ALE) of L. cupanioides and its effect on stress-induced ulcers in animal models. The plant was collected and a 1:30 (g/ml) plant powder/solvent ratio was extracted using an ultrasonic bath at 50 °C for 45 min. Up-and-down procedure was used for acute toxicity. During subacute toxicity testing, a total of 20 mice were divided into four groups of five animals each. While group 1 served as control, groups 2, 3, and 4 received 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg of the extract daily for 21 days. On day 22nd, animals were sacrificed and samples were collected for hematology, biochemical, and histological analyses. In the stress-induced ulcer activity, male albino mice were randomly separated into 5 groups of 5 animals, treated with the test drug, and then dissected after being stressed using the water immersion model. LD50 was > 5000 mg/kg, and in biochemical examination, there was a significant decrease in the ALP level at medium and high doses (p value < 0.05) and non-significant alterations in the values of urea, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), body weight and hematology parameters (p > 0.05). The histology results showed no evidence of liver and kidney toxicity. In conclusion, aqueous leaf extract of L. cupanioides was safe following a single dose (at 5000 mg/kg) and following repeated doses for 21 days (at 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg). This study demonstrated that the extract had a significant effect on stress-induced ulcers at various dose levels when compared to the control (native, negative control, and omeprazole). The animals treated with 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg of the extract showed a significant increase in ulcer score, ulcer index, ulcer severity, and total acidity (p < 0.05). Aim. This research aims to evaluate the effects of integrating Nanodiamond on the impact strength of repaired denture base resin. Methodology. Sixty acrylic resin specimens, sized 50×6×4 mm³ with a v-notch, were created from heat-polymerized acrylic resin. Ten specimens were kept intact while the other 50 specimens were sectioned to half and prepared with 45° beveling and a 2.5mm-repair gap. Nanodiamond particles were added to autopolymerized repair resin and repaired specimens were placed in five categories (n=10) according to Nanodiamond concentrations, unmodified as a control, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% ND by weight. Each specimen half was repositioned in a metal jig, and the repair resin was applied to the repair area. Subsequently, all specimens underwent finishing, polishing, and immersion in distilled water before Charpy's impact testing. Data analysis employed Tukey's post hoc test (with significance α=0.05) and one-way ANOVA. Results. Results showed that in comparison with the control group, the impact strength of repaired denture base resin significantly increased with 0.25% and 0.5% Nanodiamond addition to repair resin (significance at P ˂0.001). While it insignificantly decreased with 0.75% and 1% Nanodiamond (P=0.108 and P=0.615) and 1% presented the lowest value of impact strength (3.48±0.43 KJ/m²). Conclusion. Adding a small amount of Nanodiamond to autopolymerized repair resin demonstrated an increase in the impact strength of repaired acrylic denture base resin. The highest impact strength was recorded with 0.25% ND (6.24±0.55 KJ/m²), followed by 0.5%ND (5.93±0.21 KJ/m²), whereas 1%ND exhibited the lowest impact strength value (3.48±0.43 KJ/m²). Discoloration can be the problem of provisional restorations, especially in long-term treatment cases. The surface coating materials may influence the properties of provisional restorative material. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of silane-SiO2 film coating on the color stability and surface roughness of provisional fixed prosthodontic material compared to three commercial surface coating agents. A total of 160 specimens were fabricated from auto-polymerized polymethyl methacrylate resin (PMMA: Unifast Trad) and divided randomly into five groups according to applied surface coating procedures: non-coated (control) and four surface coated (silane-SiO2, Palaseal, Biscover LV, Optiglaze). Surface roughness (Ra) values were assessed by a profilometer. One specimen for each group, surface morphology was analyzed by SEM examination and element composition was analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) before and after immersion in distilled water for 30 days. Color changes (ΔE) were measured as CIE L*a*b* value with a spectrophotometer before immersion and 1 day, 7 days, and 30 days after immersion in solutions (distilled water, tea, coffee). The data were statistically analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA on the color stability test and one-way ANOVA on the surface roughness with Bonferroni adjustment for multiple comparisons (a=.05). The mean Ra value of all groups ranged from 0.201 to 0.264. No significant differences were found among groups on surface roughness result(P>.05). Silane-SiO2 coated PMMA acrylic resin presented the lowest ΔE value in all conditions. Palaseal group showed the highest color change in the coffee solution and Biscover LV coated showed the highest color alteration in distilled water and tea solution. The different surface coatings showed significant color changes in acrylic resin (P<.05). Silane-SiO2 film-coated acrylic resin showed the most color stability compared to commercial surface coating agents and conventional polishing methods, only silane-SiO2 and Optiglaze coated groups presented a clinically acceptable color change (ΔE<3.7) in all solutions over the period of immersion. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) exhibit excellent mechanical properties and are used to reinforce various composites. The effects of incorporating CNFs into commercial mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) cements (NEX MTA (NEX) and ProRoot® MTA (PR)) on the underwater setting properties, compressive strength, and flowability were estimated in this study. NEX mixed without CNFs disintegrated after water immersion. NEX mixed with CNF-suspended solutions showed good setting properties under water immersion and a similar compressive strength, which was kept in air (100% relative humidity). PR did not degrade after water immersion, regardless of the presence of CNFs, and no significant difference in the compressive strength caused by CNFs incorporation was detected. The relative flowability of the NEX mixture decreased with increasing CNFs content up to 1.0 w/v%. The application of CNF-incorporated MTA in various dental cases is promising because CNFs prevent the water-immersion-dependent collapse of some MTA cements immediately after mixing. Clinically, dentists are suggested to immerse autopolymerizing interim fixed restorations in hot water during fabrication. However, this suggestion, without including the best temperature, mostly comes from clinical experience instead of scientific evidence. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of water temperature on the cytotoxicity of interim partial fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) and examined its correlation with residual MMA. Tempron was chosen as the autopolymerizing polymethyl methacrylate material. Tempron was mixed and then soaked in water at different temperatures, except control group (Control air) was not being soaking in water. The specimens were incubated with conditioned medium. The concentration of residual MMA was determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). The cell viability of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) was evaluated by MTT assay. The 60 °C and 80 °C groups exhibited significantly higher cell viabilities than those of the other groups (P < 0.05) at 48 and 72 h. The concentration of residual MMA was highly correlated with this outcome: the higher the concentration of residual MMA detected in the eluates, the poorer the cell viability was; the longer the incubation time was, the stronger the correlation was between the concentration of residual MMA and the cell viability. Autopolymerizing PMMA interim FDPs that are polymerized in water up to at least 60 °C could reduce cell toxicity. The colonisation of the surface of removable acrylic dentures by various types of microorganisms can lead to the development of various diseases. Therefore, the creation of a bioactive material is highly desirable. This study aimed to develop a denture base material designed to release bioactive ions into the oral environment during use. Four types of bioactive glasses (BAG)—S53P4, Biomin F, 45S5, and Biomin C—were incorporated into the PMMA acrylic resin, with each type constituting 20 wt.% (10 wt.% non-silanised and 10% silanised) of the mixture, while PMMA acrylic resin served as the control group. The specimens were subsequently immersed in distilled water, and pH measurements of the aqueous solutions were taken every seven days for a total of 38 days. Additionally, surface roughness and translucency measurements were recorded both after preparation and following seven days of immersion in distilled water. The cytotoxicity of these materials on human fibroblast cells was evaluated after 24 and 48 h using Direct Contact and MTT assays. Ultimately, the elemental composition of the specimens was determined through energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. In general, the pH levels of water solutions containing BAG-containing acrylics gradually increased over the storage period, reaching peak values after 10 days. Notably, S53P4 glass exhibited the most significant increase, with pH levels rising from 5.5 to 7.54. Surface roughness exhibited minimal changes upon immersion in distilled water, while a slight decrease in material translucency was observed, except for Biomin C. However, significant differences in surface roughness and translucency were observed among some of the BAG-embedded specimens under both dry and wet conditions. The composition of elements declared by the glass manufacturer was confirmed by EDX analysis. Importantly, cytotoxicity analysis revealed that specimens containing BAGs, when released into the environment, did not adversely affect the growth of human gingival fibroblast cells after 48 h of exposure. This suggests that PMMA acrylics fabricated with BAGs have the potential to release ions into the environment and can be considered biocompatible materials. With the phase-out of amalgam and the increase in minimally invasive dentistry, there is a growing need for high-strength composite materials that can kill residual bacteria and promote tooth remineralization. This study quantifies how antibacterial polylysine (PLS) and re-mineralizing monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) affect Streptococcus mutans biofilms and the strength of dental composites. For antibacterial studies, the MCPM-PLS filler percentages were 0-0, 8-4, 12-6, and 16-8 wt% of the composite filler phase. Composite discs were immersed in 0.1% sucrose-supplemented broth containing Streptococcus mutans (UA159) and incubated in an anaerobic chamber for 48 h. Surface biomass was determined by crystal violet (CV) staining. Growth medium pH was measured at 24 and 48 h. Biofilm bacterial viability (CFU), exo-polysaccharide (water-soluble glucan (WSG) and water-insoluble glucan (WIG)), and extracellular DNA (eDNA) were quantified. This was by serial dilution plate counting, phenol-sulfuric acid microassay, and fluorometry, respectively. The biaxial flexural strengths were determined after water immersion for 1 week, 1 month, and 1 year. The MCPM-PLS wt% were 8-4, 8-8, 16-4 and 16-8. The normalized biomass, WSG, and WIG showed a linear decline of 66%, 64%, and 55%, respectively, as the PLS level increased up to 8%. The surrounding media pH (4.6) was all similar. A decrease in bacterial numbers with the 12-6 formula and a significant reduction with 16-8 compared to the 0-0 formulation was observed. The eDNA concentrations in biofilms formed on 12-6 and 16-8 formulations were significantly less than the 0-0 control and 8-4 formulations. Doubling MCPM and PLS caused a 14 and 19% reduction in strength in 1 week, respectively. Average results were lower at 1 month and 1 year but affected less upon doubling MCPM and PLS levels. Moreover, a 4% PLS may help to reduce total biomass and glucan levels in biofilms on the above composites. This study investigated the effects of wolframite on the fire resistance and adhesion strength of intumescent fire‐retardant coating (IFRC) using a siloxane‐modified epoxy binder. The modification of bisphenol A epoxy was confirmed via Hydrogen‐Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Analysis. The IFRC samples were developed with wolframite (0.25–2.0 wt%) and evaluated for Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), fire resistance test, furnace fire test for char expansion, morphology and chemical composition, adhesion test and water immersion test. This study identified a coating formulation containing 2.0 wt% of wolframite that showed 57.2% improvement in the residual weight, substrate temperature of 176.7°C and produced a compact char. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy showed that the addition of wolframite reduced pore size thereby increasing the char strength. X‐ray diffraction identified iron neodymium compounds in the char layers, which lowered the pore size resulting in lower substrate temperature. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the antioxidant capability and the carbon content were increased by 6.9% and 50.3% respectively. The adhesion strength was reduced, however, was within the industrial standards of 2.07 MPa. Aim. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of cold water immersion (CWI) after training on the recovery of physical performance, muscle damage, and muscle soreness in professional soccer players. At the same time, we want to investigate the benefits of water immersion in football, focusing on its potential to improve pain management and prevent injuries. Methods. We searched the following computerized databases: PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Google Scholar, and the websites of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The aim of this research was to specify the elements of recovery in football performance based on scientific studies and practical experience. Results. Some studies suggest that immediate immersion post-exercise is more beneficial, while others propose a delayed approach. Conclusions. Numerous studies have explored the effects of cold water immersion (CWI) in sports. Overall, CWI has been found to effectively reduce muscle soreness and accelerate recovery after intense exercise. It works by constricting blood vessels, reducing inflammation, and potentially minimizing muscle damage. However, there is some variability in individual responses, and the optimal timing and duration of CWI remain subjects of debate. While CWI appears promising for short-term recovery, its long-term impact on performance gains requires further investigation. Athletes and practitioners should consider individual preferences and the specific demands of their sport when incorporating CWI into their recovery strategies. Studies suggest that immediate post-macth immersion, ideally within the first hour, is more effective. The key aspects of procedure is water temperature, commonly ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, and immersion duration, often between 10 to 20 minutes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following the scientific management of organic manure (poultry) may contribute to reducing environmental pollution and human health, as the current study was conducted with the aim of recycling poultry manure accumulated in the field of poultry farming at the research station - Faculty of Agriculture - Karma site and the impact of varying fermentation durations on organic manure, specifically animal (poultry manure) fermented by different fermentation methods and its impact on the rest of the factors to produce highly decomposed organic manure free of pathogens. Several traditional fermentation methods (compost and water immersion) were followed. and modern (bioreactor), and for a fermentation period of 90 days with an estimate of most of the qualitative characteristics of the organic manure produced and within periods of 15 - 30 - 45 - 60 - 75 - 90 days. The results of the experiment of incubation of poultry manure showed that all the studied traits have changed with the progress of fermentation time and in the same direction, the results demonstrated that fermentation in the bioreactor uni thas given the highest values of total nitrogen, total phosphorus and potassium 32.53, 16.72, 20.86, g.kg-1 for the elements mentioned sequentially, while the lowest values of pH 6.68 and C/N ratio 9.96 compared to other fermentation methods. Background and Objective: Childbirth is one of the most significant experiences in a woman's life. The manner in which childbirth unfolds and is experienced can be influenced by various factors, including the birthing environment and the woman's attitude and preparation. Taking a holistic view of childbirth, it becomes apparent that addressing the basic physiological needs during childbirth can significantly influence the comfort and sense of security of laboring women. The aim of this research was to assess the level of satisfaction among women with their experience during childbirth and to identify its determinants. Materials and Methods: This study included 275 women who had given birth within the past 15 years and were up to 40 years of age. The research method employed was a diagnostic survey, involving a self-designed questionnaire. Results: discussing the birth plan with the midwife, the ability to ask questions during labor, consuming meals during labor, water immersion, listening to music during labor, assuming vertical positions during the second stage of labor, and skin-to-skin contact are associated with increased satisfaction with the childbirth experience. Conclusions: The study findings revealed that the highest levels of satisfaction were reported in connection with the interactions with medical staff during childbirth and the quality of facilities available during delivery. Introduction: Wet oral environment may have deleterious effects on performance of the composites due to influences of water sorption and solubility. The study evaluated the hydrolytic degradation caused because of water sorption and solubility of silorane and methacrylate-based dental composites. Methods: Ten disc samples (2 mm × 10 mm) were prepared. Samples were analyzed for water solubility and sorption according to ISO 4049:2000 regulations and tested for mass gain or loss following immersion in water or in artificial saliva at 1 day, 15 days, and 30 days period. Student's 't' test, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Tukey's post-hoc tests determined statistical significance of the experimental results with global significance set at P = 0.05. Results: Considerable sorption and solubility was observed with time in both materials on immersion. Silorane composites showed lower water sorption and solubility than methacrylate-based composite (MBC). Artificial saliva demonstrated higher sorption and solubility compared to distilled water. Conclusion: Silorane composites display enhanced hydrolytic stability even after a month of immersion in contrast to conventional methacrylate-based composites (MBCs), making it a better alternative to MBC resins clinically. Introduction: Physical activity is recommended as an alternative treatment for depression. Myokines, which are secreted from skeletal muscles during physical activity, play an important role in the skeletal muscle-brain axis. Musclin, a newly discovered myokine, exerts physical endurance, however, the effects of musclin on emotional behaviors, such as depression, have not been evaluated. This study aimed to access the anti-depressive effect of musclin and clarify the connection between depression-like behavior and hypothalamic neuropeptides in mice. Methods: We measured the immobility time in the forced swim (FS) test, the time spent in open arm in the elevated-plus maze (EPM) test, the mRNA levels of hypothalamic neuropeptides, and enumerated the c-Fos-positive cells in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), arcuate nucleus (ARC), and nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) in mice with the intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of musclin. Next, we evaluated the effects of a selective corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) type 1 receptor antagonist, selective CRF type 2 receptor antagonist, melanocortin receptor (MCR) agonist, and selective melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) agonist on changes in behaviors induced by musclin. Finally we evaluated the antidepressant effect of musclin using mice exposed to repeated water immersion (WI) stress. Results: We found that the i.p. and i.c.v. administration of musclin decreased the immobility time and relative time in the open arms (open %) in mice and increased urocortin 2 (Ucn 2) levels but decreased proopiomelanocortin levels in the hypothalamus. The numbers of c-Fos-positive cells were increased in the PVN and NTS but decreased in the ARC of mice with i.p. administration of musclin. The c-Fos-positive cells in the PVN were also found to be Ucn 2-positive. The antidepressant and anxiogenic effects of musclin were blocked by central administration of a CRF type 2 receptor antagonist and a melanocortin 4 receptor agonist, respectively. Peripheral administration of musclin also prevented depression-like behavior and the decrease in levels of hypothalamic Ucn 2 induced by repeated WI stress. Discussion: These data identify the antidepressant effects of musclin through the activation of central Ucn 2 signaling and suggest that musclin and Ucn 2 can be new therapeutic targets and endogenous peptides mediating the muscle-brain axis. Cold mix asphalt is an energy-efficient and eco-friendly pavement material, yet its early strength is deficient. This study investigated the strength augment of cold mix asphalt through modification with geopolymer additives. Macro-strength was assessed via Marshall stability testing under varied geopolymer contents, curing durations, and water immersion conditions. Microscale analysis encompassed fluorescence microscopy to discern geopolymer-asphalt interactions and discrete element modeling to simulate the compression process. Results showed that stability rose and then fell as geopolymer content increased, with an optimal ratio of 4:3 between base asphalt and additive. Stability increased rapidly in the first 3 days of curing and accumulated at a slower rate afterwards. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that geopolymer bonded the asphalt to the aggregate surfaces. Modeling exhibited geopolymer resisted vertical loads and confined the aggregate. In summation, geopolymerization enhances cold mix strength by improving adhesion and generating a rigid 3D network encompassing aggregate particles. The computational model that is able to estimate the temperature distribution inside a solid specimen during the film boiling phase of immersion quenching (water entry) process has been presented in this paper. It is based on the prescribed initial temperatures of the solid specimen and the liquid quenchant. In addition, the turbulence effects have to be considered using the assumed turbulence kinetic energy value, i.e., the "frozen turbulence" approach, that remains constant thorough the simulation. The studied material is nickel alloy, Inconel 600, for which extensive experimental data are available. The work has been carried out using ANSYS Fluent computational fluid dynamics software and the methods for solution of Stefan problem by Eulerian two fluid VOF model. A satisfactory agreement between the experimental and the calculated data has been achieved, yielding thereby the computationally obtained data that fit to a great extent the prescribed error band of ±10% during the estimated film boiling phase of the immersion quenching process itself. It was, however, found that the temperature calculated in the center of a specimen fits this error band until reaching somewhere t < 6 s due to low presumed turbulence level in the domain. In addition, the explosion of the vapor phase after the body reaches the free surface of the quenchant has also been successfully tracked using the numerical simulation model proposed herein. The major novelty of the present research lies in the fact that a moving boundary problem has been successfully resolved in conjunction with, to a great extent, basic-principle-based heat and mass transfer in a turbulent flow conjugate heat transfer (CHT) numerical simulation using moderate computational resources.
