- Abstract
The objectives of the study were to explore the experiences of school health officers in identifying and managing mental health problems of secondary school students and to gather recommendations from the school officers for improving the effectiveness of mental health care in secondary schools in Can Tho City, Vietnam. We conducted a qualitative study based on in-depth interviews using a semi-structured guideline with 15 school health officers at 15 secondary schools in Can Tho City, Vietnam. Data were analyzed using content-driven analysis to identify recurring themes. The school health officers reported that stress, depression, suicidal ideation, and sexual orientation issues were the most commonly encountered mental health problems among their students. The officers worked with a limited range of interventions for helping these students, such as giving non-narcotic analgesics or advising students to take a short break at school or to go home. Most of them felt that their training was insufficient to deal with mental health problems in an optimal way. They recommended further training to improve their knowledge and skills in recognizing and managing mental health problems in students. They also considered a university-sponsored mental health website a good source of information on mental health care for students. School health officers reported that they did not feel well equipped to manage mental health problems because of insufficient training, lack confidence, and absence of an appropriate network for advice and referral. Updated policies and programs are needed for initial training and refresher courses, which will strengthen the role of school health officers as first line support for secondary school students with mental health problems. Vaccination coverage among children in kindergarten varies across the country and within states. We surveyed a convenience sample of kindergarten school nurses to investigate self-reported vaccination-related activities conducted at schools nationwide. The majority of the 1,435 kindergarten school nurses responding reported that their schools communicate with parents and guardians of undervaccinated students by phone (96%), postal mail (67%), newsletters (61%), and e-mail (59%). Most respondents reported documenting vaccination coverage in electronic systems (85%) and sharing coverage reports with health departments (69%). A total of 41% of school nurses worked with external partners for vaccination efforts, the most common support received from partners being vaccine administration (38%) and providing materials/vaccines (21%). School nurses also reported that 95% of kindergartners were up to date for all vaccines. School-based vaccination-related activities are essential to sustaining high levels of vaccination coverage for the protection of children at schools and in the broader community. Every year, thousands of people are labor- and sex-trafficked throughout the United States, generating billions of dollars. Many of these victims are children. They are included in the more than 80% of victims who seek some type of medical care during their captivity. In addition, more than 90% of the children exploited attend school daily. By seeking medical care and attending school, victims place health care personnel, especially pediatric and school nurses, in a unique position to help identify and assist them. Pediatric and school nurses both practice in settings that allow for familiarization with a child and the opportunity for private medical screenings. These opportunities allow for red flag indicators to be recognized and possible victims to be identified and/or disclose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Schools are uniquely positioned to impact student health and academic outcomes through health and wellness policies. The purpose of this study was to describe factors influencing implementation of school health and wellness policies, specifically those focused on physical activity and nutrition. In-depth, stakeholder interviews were conducted with key informants at eight Chicago Public Schools (K–eighth grade). Data were analyzed using summative content analysis. Two themes were identified, facilitators and challenges to policy implementation. Facilitators included district support and motivation (internal and external). Challenges included limited school nurse availability, breaking tradition and budget. The external community and wellness team composition fell within both themes. Specific strategies are suggested to build upon policy implementation facilitators and overcome challenges. While school nurses play an integral role in student health and wellness, further research is needed to understand school nurse impact on student health and academic outcomes through school health policy. Objective: In this study, we assessed school nurses' perception of barriers to caring for a child with Type 1 diabetes in the school setting. Methods: Four semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 29 school nurses from 4 Appalachian locations in Ohio. The researchers used purposeful sampling for the study and invited the participants by an email flyer sent through a state school nurse listserv. The focus groups ranged in size from 5-9 participants in each group and a research guide of 14 open-ended questions was used to guide the interview. The transcripts were transcribed verbatim by a research assistant and independently analyzed by 2 researchers for categories and themes. Results: Emerging themes from the interview data were: (1) nurse workload, (2) need for diabetes training for school nurses, and (3) lack of support from parent/guardians and healthcare providers. Conclusions: Our findings provide direction for school nurse staffing models, policies for diabetes management, and strategies for enhancing relationships between parents and healthcare providers. Intellectual disability may affect the access school children have to curriculum and social experiences. While these children often have difficulty with social relationships, academic functioning, and communication, they also may experience pain on a daily basis. Communication difficulties present challenges for school nurses to identify and assess pain in students with intellectual disability. Although considered a gold standard for pain assessment, self-report cannot always be used for students with intellectual disability. School nurses must find methods other than self-reports of pain intensity to adequately assess these children's pain, such as collaborating with the student's caregiver(s), observing the student in the classroom, or assuming pain is present and offering an appropriate pain management intervention. Technology is pervasive in society and reaches across all age-groups. The use of technology in youth has risen steadily in the past two decades through access to television, internet, computers, social media, and gaming in various formats. Due to this increased exposure and access, concerns have developed among mental health and healthcare providers regarding gaming addiction in youth. The American Psychiatric Association mentioned internet gaming disorder in the 2013 publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.). While not recognized as a specific diagnosis at the time of publication, there was a call for further research and evaluation of this phenomenon. Research indicates there are negative impacts on academic performance, social development, and self-concept in game-addicted youth. The purpose of this article is to provide the school nurse with information needed to recognize and care for youth at risk for and those experiencing gaming addiction. The school nurse is poised to provide nursing care in the school setting to educate, prevent, and help manage youth with gaming addiction risks and experiences, as part of an interdisciplinary team. Vision plays a key role in a child's development. Early detection and treatment of vision abnormalities decreases future complications. Follow-up vision care is a common problem. Barriers to vision care include financial cost, lack of insurance knowledge to cover costs, and disbelief of vision results. The purpose of this evidence-based pilot project was to improve the rate of follow-up vision care obtained by school-aged children. The target population was school-aged children from kindergarten to fifth grade at an elementary school within Lake County, Ohio. The vision referral program included phone calls to families to identify and overcome barriers to obtaining vision care. Barriers identified with the target population include disbelief of vision results, lack of knowledge about vision health, and financial cost. Results indicated an increase of vision care rates during the 2017–2018 academic year by 60% above baseline rates from the previous academic year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study used self-administered survey data from seven high schools in Florida with a majority Black and/or Hispanic sample to examine transgender students' perceptions and experiences related to school climate in comparison to cisgender students. Using propensity score matching, a matched analytic sample was created of transgender and cisgender students (n = 542, including 186 transgender youth). Adjusted weighted logistic regression models indicated that transgender students were significantly more likely to report ever being bullied at school, being bullied in the past 3 months, and not going to school ≥3 days during the past 30 days. Transgender students were significantly less likely to report feeling safe at school and having positive perceptions of all five school connectedness items compared to cisgender students. Recent bullying experiences moderated the association between transgender status and past month absences. Findings can inform potential roles for school nurses in improving school climate for transgender youth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research regarding burnout in acute care settings revealed that positive work environments increase job satisfaction, decrease staff turnover, and improve patient outcomes. However, few studies address burnout among school nurses. The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between the school nurse practice environment, school nurses' levels of burnout, and perceived sources of work stress. A cross-sectional sample of 100 registered nurses completed a web-based version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Areas of Worklife Survey. Identified stressors were entered into regression models to determine associations with levels of burnout. Burnout is significantly associated with all Areas of Worklife subscales. School nurses who reported satisfactory work environments experienced little to no burnout. This study provides insights into the domains of work that can cause burnout among school nurses and provides evidence that can inform school leadership and policy makers on ways to promote healthy work environments. - Abstract
The purpose of this project was to describe differences in the numbers of children with a diagnosis of asthma identified through two methods, determine barriers to receiving asthma interventions in elementary school settings, and make recommendations for action and advocacy for school nurses to increase the number of children with access to asthma medications at school. The authors conducted a review of the asthma diagnosis process from the initial identification of a diagnosis to the delivery of interventions with 349 enrolled students in one large, urban public school in Tennessee. Sixty children were identified using the school's existing parent identification process and 91 children who participated in a concurrent asthma education program self-identified or were referred by a teacher, staff, or administrator. Only seven students identified through the combined methods had access to asthma medication (albuterol) at school. Missing asthma action plans, medication forms and inhalers emerged as major barriers to intervention even when a child's diagnosis is documented. The Asthma School Readiness Process (ASRP) was developed, which describes recommendations for nurses in school and community settings to promote safety and access to asthma medication in schools. • Providing access to quick relief medication (albuterol) in schools promotes safety. • The lack of communication between elementary schools and providers is a barrier to asthma care. • Forms requirements and privacy laws are additional barriers to asthma care in schools. • Nurses can assist parents with submitting required forms to schools. • School nurse action and advocacy can result in changes that improve access to asthma medication. The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between school nurses' self‐assessed cultural competence in health visits with children of foreign origin and demographic variables, by using a cross‐sectional design. A Web‐based questionnaire assessing cultural competence and demographic variables was distributed to a nationally representative sample (n = 816) of school nurses in Sweden. Data were analyzed using regression analysis. School nurses assessed themselves as culturally aware and moderately culturally competent, but not as culturally knowledgeable, culturally skilled, or comfortable in cultural encounters. Cultural competence was related to education in cultural diversity, how often nurses encounter children of foreign origin, and nurses' country of origin. In total, these variables explained 23.6% of the variation in school nurses' cultural competence. Because school nurses regard themselves as moderately culturally competent, a foundation for promoting children's health on equal terms in school health care exists. However, education in cultural diversity combined with other additional strategies is needed to further strengthen school nurses' cultural knowledge, skills, and comfort level in encounters with children of foreign origin. In states with universal mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect (CAN), it is essential that people who work with children and youth in a community be appropriately trained to recognize and report CAN. The primary goal of CAN training is early detection and intervention with a secondary purpose of impacting rates of violence, disease, drug use, and teen pregnancies in the community. The purpose of this project was to implement a standardized, community-tailored CAN training for laypersons and a train-the-trainer program in a rural Oklahoma community. The CAN training was evaluated on knowledge, confidence, training satisfaction, and willingness to participate in the train-the-trainer session. The train-the-trainer session was evaluated on confidence and training satisfaction. Participant knowledge and confidence was measured by comparing pretest scores to immediate and 4 months after the training posttest scores. Posttest scores indicated increase in knowledge at the posttest (p <.001) and posttest 2 (p <.001). There was a significant increase in confidence at the posttest (p <.001) and posttest 2 (p =.009). School nurses' experienced barriers and benefits with perceptions of self-efficacy are important factors to consider for program implementation in the school setting. Little research has been done in the area of automated external defibrillator (AED) program implementation by the school nurse for the treatment of sudden cardiac arrest. The purpose of this study was to identify benefits of and barriers to AED program implementation in public schools and measure school nurses' self-efficacy related to their role as a change agent in program implementation. Results revealed that school nurses are functioning with a high level of self-efficacy in their ability to influence major health-care decisions in the school setting, and despite barriers, AED program implementation is considered beneficial and a necessary component of emergency care. Electronic, or "e"-cigarette use has been adopted by an alarming number of teens in recent years. E-cigarettes are neither legal for youth nor considered safe for use by youth. E-cigarette companies have targeted youth in their marketing strategies and developed appealing flavors with high nicotine content to ensure dependence on their products. Schools lack adequate resources and capacity to address e-cigarette use, relying mostly on punitive sanctions for what is essentially a health issue. School nurses can help their districts and schools by navigating appropriate consequences for vaping, providing accurate information and education, providing cessation resources, advocating for student support, and informing stakeholders on population health strategies to prevent initiation and reduce youth e-cigarette use. The occurrence of mass shootings in U.S. public schools is increasing. For this reason, schools have begun expanding their awareness and preparation for these crises. However, in most preparation strategies, students with disabilities are not accounted for, which leaves an already vulnerable population at further risk. Due to their expertise in working with students with diverse needs and promoting health and safety in schools, school nurses are the ideal persons to lead the discussion about safety deficits when it comes to school shootings and students with special needs. This article provides a rationale for school nurses taking leadership roles in creating school shooting policies as well as provides guidelines for how nurses can work collaboratively to keep students with disabilities safe. Objective: Effective asthma management at school can help students with asthma stay healthy, learn better and participate fully during their school day. This study sought to understand school-based asthma care from the perspective of parents and school personnel to improve asthma care at school. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Hartford, CT. School personnel from 59 schools and 322 parents/guardians were invited to participate. Four cross-sectional surveys using Likert-type scales assessed parental and school personnel satisfaction, confidence in managing asthma, policy awareness, management of asthma during physical activity, and perceived gaps surrounding school-based asthma care. Results: 263/322 (82%) eligible parents of children with asthma (mean age 8.5 ± 4.3, 56% Hispanic, 30% African American) completed surveys. Thirty six school nurses (62%), 131 teachers (8%), 14 coaches (14%), and 17 school principals (29%) participated. 90% of parents were satisfied with asthma management in school. School nurses were more aware of asthma policies than teachers (74% vs. 24%, p < 0.001). 34% of school nurses, 30% of teachers and 36% of coaches were unaware of asthma-related absences. 14% of physical education teachers/coaches reported no asthma training. Conclusion: In this convenience sample of parents and school personnel, parents reported overall satisfaction regarding the asthma care their children receive at school, yet a number of gaps pertaining to school-based asthma care were identified. Increased asthma training and enhanced communication among school personnel is needed to address these gaps. National guidelines and resources are readily available to improve asthma care at school. - Abstract
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate changes in exercise intentions and behaviors among children across time. Then, we investigated how determinants in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) predicted exercise intentions and behaviors, and explored if demographic predictors contributed to predicting behaviors. A three-wave, 12-month longitudinal study was conducted. A proportional stratified random sampling method was adopted, and 1997 children from 11 elementary schools in Taipei City were recruited. Numbers of participants were 1074, 1064, and 995 at times 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Children's exercise intentions and behaviors significantly changed (both p <.05) during a 6-month interval. Attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control (PBC) at time 1 could respectively explain 51.0% and 17.1% of the variance in time 1 and 2 intentions (F (3, 1068) = 372.20, F (3, 1059) = 73.92, both p <.001). PBC was the strongest predictor of the intention to exercise. Intentions were the immediate determinant of exercise behaviors. PBC not only indirectly affected exercise behaviors through intentions but also directly affected exercise behaviors. Gender and sports club participation directly affected children's exercise behaviors. The findings support the TPB model being suitable for use in longitudinal studies; its core constructs significantly predicted children's exercise intentions and behaviors. This study highlights that clinical practitioners and school nurses working with children can help youth engage in regular exercise by enhancing their intentions and perceived behavioral control, and cultivating positive attitudes and subjective norms when planning exercise intervention programs. • Children's exercise intentions and behaviors significantly changed during a 6-month interval. • The Theory of Planned Behavior significantly predicted children's exercise intentions and behaviors in a longitudinal design. • Factors affecting children's exercise intention included attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control. • Gender and sports club participation can both directly and indirectly affect Taiwanese children's exercise behaviors. Immunization compliance can require time and resources not readily available to school nurses in urban schools. Furthermore, immunizations can be perceived as lower priority at the high school level. But communicable disease outbreaks, such as the one experienced across the United States with measles, highlight the important role of school nurses in compliance activities. Using a five-step process, a school nurse was able to update one urban high school's database to more accurately reflect student measles vaccination compliance. An initial immunization database query indicated that 12% of approximately 2,000 enrolled students lacked even one measles-containing vaccine. A search through the state immunization registry and individual student educational folders revealed that 65% of these students actually had at least one measles vaccination. Remedies under consideration by the district in addressing this discrepancy are described. The remaining students (4% of total enrollment) required the additional steps of notification and intensive follow-up with students and their families. Within 2 months, fewer than 1% of students lacked a record of measles vaccination. The five steps presented can be adapted to achieve compliance with all required vaccines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In today´s modern society, digital technology is a large part of our everyday life and is seen as a large part of our everyday life and is seen as a relatively new social problem. During the last decade, the use of digital technology has increased explosively in all age groups in society. Children and young people today are more sedentary than before, and screen time is prioritized over active play. The district nurse works to promote health for the entire population and can work within the school as a school nurse. The school is an important arena for implementing a healthy lifestyle from an early age and the importance of a good care relationship is seen as significant. The purpose of the essay is to investigate how the school nurse works with screen time in children at school. The design consists of an integrative literature review where twelve scientific articles have been searched from the databases Cinahl, Pubmed and Medline and then reviewed according to the selected review template and prepared criteria. Which resulted in three main themes and seven sub-themes that describe how the school nurse can work. The results revealed the importance of collaborating with both guardians and other adults in the school. But also, that the school nurse has some knowledge of what the children do on the internet. The health – promoting work of promoting movement and limiting screen time was seen as significant. This essay can demonstrate the importance of identifying and teaching about the health effects of screen time in both the short and long term.

- Abstract
In Sweden, health visits including height and weight measurements are one of the signature tasks for the school nurse. The school nurse as part of the school health staff aims to support children and adolescents to good health and a sense of coherence, SOC. This to offer students the best possible chances to good education in school. Height and weight measurements in schools as a screening program still lack evidence of what benefit it actually has for the individual. Purpose: The purpose is to describe how height and weight measurements in school affect children and adolescents. Results: This integrative literature review resulted in three categories; Feeling of discomfort, Focus on the body is elevated and Enhanced health awareness. Conclusion: Society's unattainable standards and ideals of beauty with a firm beauty culture contribute to the fact that screening our bodies become problematic. Deviating from the norm or being afraid of deviating from the norm can contribute to lowered self-esteem and self-image, which can affect the individuals’ experience of life and health in a life course perspective. It is therefore important that school health staff and school nurses work to support children and adolescents in their physical, psychological and social development. They also need to be aware of the importance to work with dismantle the dominant ideals of beauty because all children and adolescents have the right to experience good health and a sense of coherence.

- Abstract
According to the Social Services Act (SFS 2001:453), school nurses have an obligation to report to social services if they suspect that a child is being abused. Despite that, there´s still under-reporting from schools to social services. School nurses have a unique insight into children's lives and can have a decisive role in regard to whether a report of concern to social services is issued. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate school nurses' experiences of handling reports of concern and support in situations with suspicions of children being abused. Method: The study had a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design where data was collected via a self-constructed questionnaire. Results: The results showed that the school nurses did not report all students whom they suspected of being abused to social services. The school nurses had experience of threats and violence when reporting concerns, which led to doubts about reporting to social services in the future when they suspected that a child was being abused. The school nurses requested improved cooperation with social services when reporting concerns. Most of the school nurses felt that they had support from colleagues when reporting concerns as well as a favorable working climate, which led to more reports of concerns being issued. Conclusion: In order to meet the requirements of the reporting obligation, school nurses need increased support in carrying out reports of concern, especially from social services. In addition, the school nurses have a need for education concerning abused children.

- Abstract
Det framkom att skolsköterskan arbetade hälsofrämjande och förebyggande vilket bidrog till att hållbar utveckling främjades och att elevernas trygghet och säkerhet tillgodosågs., Children who get hurt at home can involve both physical and psychological violence, sexual abuse and neglect, which can lead to damage to the child's development, both psychologically and physically. The school nurse has an important role here by identifying and ensuring that the children and students receive support and help. 1 in 10 children in Sweden are regularly exposed to physical and/or psychological violence from parents or other guardians aged 0–18. The purpose of the study is to describe the school nurse's experience of meeting children, aged 6–18, who are having trouble at home. A literature review with a descriptive design was done. The Bettany-Saltikov method has been used for data analysis. The data analysis has been carried out in nine steps. The results showed that the school nurses sometimes ended up in difficult situations that could affect them. They often felt a frustration with working alone, which could contribute to vulnerability. A bad conscience often weighed on the school nurses when they suspected that a child was ill. They knew that according to law a report had to be made, but when there were shortcomings in the cooperation with the social service, the reports were not always made. To be able to help the children in the best way, it was required that the cooperation between the various professions within school and social services worked. The school nurse felt that professional experience was an asset to pay attention to the children who were in some way bad at home. The health talks were an important part of when the school nurse identified a child who was unwell. It emerged that the school nurse worked in health promotion and prevention, which contributed to sustainable development being promoted and the pupils' safety and security being catered for.

- Abstract
Skolledningen måste gå från teori till praktik och arbeta med hela kedjan av anställda på skolan., Introduction: Sexual health is a human right and an important component of all adolescent’s general, social and personal wellbeing. It has been described in research that adolescents wish for more knowledge regarding sexuality and relationships. The school’s instruction on sexuality, relationships and consent is intended to promote the students’ health and wellbeing. Conclusion: There is an unclarity as to what role the school nurses have when working with sexual health. The nurses describe much of the variance is due to the organizational prerequisites set by the school, along with the nurses’ interests and personal drive regarding the subject matter. It is also dependent on their knowledge and education as well as their sense of obligation for teaching the subject matter. This leads to youth experiencing a differentiated education in sexualhealth. Schoolprincipals need towork indeveloping clear guidelines and routines around the mission schools have according to the curriculum. Leadership must advance from theory to putting it into practice and collaborate with the whole chain of employees.

- Abstract
Consequences of sleep deprivation affect memory and impair learning. Social media occupies a large part of adolescents' time and many parents worry about screen time. Through meetings with adolescents, the school nurse has the opportunity to support and help adolescents. The Aim is to describe how social media affects adolescents' sleep . The method was a literature review. The Results show that social media affects the quality and length of sleep, where the circadian rhythm is an important part. Adolescents' use is influenced by unspoken norms of constant availability, which leads to stress. The use is driven by a fear of exclusion, making it difficult to reduce use. Girls' sleep is more affected than boys' sleep. Strict parental rules improve the adolescents sleep quality and sleep hours, but only if not developed a problematic use of social media. Conclusion: Social media is important in adolescents' lives and sleeping gets less space. The school nurse faced great challenges in mastering adolescents' sleep difficulties. Health promoting work at both the individual and group level and inclusion of parents can contribute to healthy use of social media and good sleep quality.

- Abstract
- Abstract
The percentage of children and young people with mental illness is increasing. Previous research shows that many middle school-age children seek their school nurses with somatic complaints that are related to mental illnesses. It is part of the school nurse's professional role to, among other things, identify, promote and prevent mental illness in school environments. One of the nurse's core competencies is to provide individual and personal care, be responsive and actively listen to the patient's stories about health and provide care based on the patient's needs and demands. Aim: The purpose of this study has been to depict the school nurse's experiences of working with young students with mental illness in the age range of 9 to 15 years. Method: A qualitative interview study where data was analyzed with an content analysis using an inductive approach. The sample consisted of 8 female school nurses from different schools in central Sweden. Results: The results are presented in three main categories: Identification of mental illness, preventive work against mental illness and challenges within the work with mental illness, each of them with three sub categories as well. School nurses often identify mental illness through the regular routine health talks offered all children throughout their school years. The preventive work was of great importance and had a huge impact for the children as well as for building relationships so the children could feel trust and confidence for the school nurses. Secrecy towards guardians and the other school staff was seen as challenging for the school nurses. Conclusions: The study shows that preventive work is done by showing commitment, having good relationships to the children and good cooperation with other professions within the student health team, which is an essential presumption for mental illness to reduce.

- Abstract
Studiens resultat visar enhetligt på flera framgångsfaktorer för en god och effektiv samverkan., Why is it so difficult to collaborate when it is actually seen as quite easy? The objective of this study is to contribute knowledge about collaboration in relation to the expectations placed on the school nurse in municipal operations. Examination of collaboration documents at the national, municipal, and professional levels was analysed. In Sweden, collaboration within the medical intervention of student health has been emphasised as an important factor in strengthening student health and improving students' ability to reach their full potential. Therefore, it is important to improve collaboration among different professional groups and collaboration partners. One of the main advantages of collaboration is that it can provide a comprehensive understanding of students' health and well-being. Collaboration can also ensure that students receive the right support and interventions at the right time, which can be crucial in promoting their health, well-being, and academic performance. The results of the study consistently demonstrate several success factors for effective collaboration.

- Abstract
In Sweden, the role of the school nurse is to promote students’ health and wellbeing and also to prevent illness. Wellbeing can involve creating good relationships but also includes feelings of participation and a meaningful existence. During a health dialogue the school nurse can discover students who experience mental illness, and factors that can affect students’ wellbeing. The purpose of the study was to investigate factors that may affect students’ wellbeing. A quantitative method with a retrospective longitudinal approach was applied. The study was conducted using collected data based on health questions posed to students in the first year of high school’s health visit during the 2013/14–2018/19 school years. The results show differences between girls’ and boys’ wellbeing based on their answers to health issues. Factors that may affect students’ wellbeing can pose a risk of mental illness. Mental illness is increasing in students and the increased demands at school may be the cause., Email: marie.wilhsson@his.seFinancial support for the manuscript preparation was provided by University of Skövde, Institution for Health Sciences research milieu DHEAR and research group FamCeH.

- Abstract
Background: Mental ill health is increasing among adolescents, and self-injury is one expression of mental ill health. Sexual risk taking among adolescents is often associated with exposure to violence. Sex could be used as a strategy to regulate negative emotions and feelings of emptiness. The health promotion work of school nurses (SNs) can be one way to identify students who are exposed to or at risk of sexual ill-health and sexual risk taking. By using the SEXual health Identification Tool (SEXIT) in health dialogues, SNs can identify students exposed to or at risk of sexual ill-health and sexual risk taking. Aim: To describe SNs’ experience of using SEXIT in health dialogues with students. Methods: An exploratory design was used. Six SNs participated in semi-structured individual interviews, and the data were analysed with qualitative content analysis. Results: Three categories were identified: ‘SEXIT provides support and structure’, ‘SEXIT provides conditions for designing a good dialogue’, and ‘working with SEXIT includes managing challenges’. Conclusions: SNs have a critical role in the identification of students with sexual ill-health and sexual risk taking as well as those exposed to violence. SEXIT could be included and systematically used in the health dialogue as it enables a natural dialogue with students about a sensitive topic and creates the prerequisites to identify adolescents at risk of sexual ill health., Funding: Financial support for the manuscript preparation was provided by University of Skövde, Institution for Health Sciences research milieu DHEAR and research group FamCeH.

- Abstract
Parents are key to promoting children's healthy growth and development. However, school nurses need knowledge about how to best support parents' health-promoting activities. This study aimed to explore parents' thoughts regarding their normal-weight 6-year-old children's food and physical activity behaviors as expressed during health conversations with the school nurse. Qualitative content analysis of audio-recorded conversations (n = 30) showed that parents think of their children's behaviors in terms of: (a) children's personality in relation to food and physical activity; (b) recognizing children's food and physical activity behaviors; (c) parenting in relation to food and physical activity; (d) interaction with children in situations around food and physical activity; and (e) contextual circumstances to promote children's healthy food and physical activity behaviors. The study contributes with novel knowledge regarding clinical work in health promotion, with suggestions for how school nurses can engage parents in promoting and sustaining healthy food and physical activity behaviors.

- Abstract
Background: Mental health problems among adolescents is a global challenge. During the transition to adolescence, physiological, psychological, and social changes occur, leading to increased vulnerability. Thus, adolescent boys are less likely to seek help for mental health problems, which makes them an undetected group. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of adolescent boys' experiences of mental health and school health service., Methods: An inductive, qualitative design was chosen using three focus group interviews and three individual interviews. The study included 18 adolescent boys in 7th grade, in a school located in a medium-sized municipality in Norway. The interviews were analysed with qualitative content analysis. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) were followed in this study., Results: The overall theme "barriers towards seeking help", and three categories- navigating stigma and privacy concerns; perceptions of self-responsibility; and lacking knowledge of mental health problems and help-seeking-described the adolescent boys experiences. The awareness and willingness to seek help were present, but there are barriers preventing the adolescent boys from acting on that willingness., Conclusions: Lack of knowledge and a non-permissive culture for mental health problems among adolescents contributes to decreased help-seeking behaviour among adolescent boys. The school health service is the most related health service for adolescents and should focus on being available and strengthening empowerment and mental health literacy through the development and implementation of interventions to promote mental health., (© 2024.
