The inability of lactose to properly crystallize due to the presence of high amounts of salts poses significant hurdles for its downstream processing with some dairy waste streams such as acid whey. This study aimed to investigate the physicochemical and thermal behaviors of lactose in the presence of cations commonly present in acid whey. A model-based study was conducted, utilizing various cations (Mg, Ca, K, and Na) at concentrations (8, 30, 38, and 22 mM, respectively) that are typically found in acid whey. The research experiments were conducted using a factorial design. The thermal analysis of concentrated solutions revealed augmentation in the enthalpy of water evaporation in the presence of individual cations and their combinations in comparison with pure lactose (698.4 J/g). The degree of enthalpy increased following the order of Na+ (918.6 J/g), K+ (936.6 J/g), Mg2+ (987.0 J/g), Ca2+ (993.2 J/g), and their mixture (1005.4 J/g). This resulted in a substantial crystal yield decline in the exactly reversed order to that of the enthalpy. The greatest decline was observed in the presence of the salt mixture (63%) followed by Ca (67%) compared with pure lactose (79%). The yield reduction was also inversely related to the solubility of lactose. The presence of divalent cations appeared to play a role in the isomerization of lactose molecules observed using DSC and XRD diffractograms according to the disappearance of peaks related to β lactose. The effect of salts on the crystallization of lactose was a combination of cation–lactose interactions, changes in the solubility of lactose, ion–dipole interactions between water and cations, and changes in the structure of water molecules. As potential intravesical exfoliants for the treatment of bladder cancer, four new imdiazolium salts have been prepared. These compounds are modified on the nitrogen positions of the 4,5‐diphenyl‐1H‐imidazole or benzimidazole rings with naphthalen‐2‐ylmethyl groups, and the 2 positions on the azolium cations are occupied by arene rings. The 4,5‐diphenyl‐1H‐imidazole and benzimidazole precursors are produced from 1,2‐phenylenediamine and benzil respectively, and the imidazolium cations are generated from sequential alkylation of the nitrogen positions using 2‐bromomethyl naphthalene. The four imidazolium salts were screened for their chemotherapuetic activity using the NCI‐60 Human Tumour Cell Line Screen, and we observed that the cytotoxicity was more dependent on the identity of the imidazolium group (benzimidazolium versus diphenylimidazolium) rather than on the 2‐aryl position structure. Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) possess unique properties as a result of their internal dynamic bonds, such as self‐healing and reprocessing abilities. In this study, we report a thermally responsive C−Se dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) that relies on the transalkylation exchange between selenonium salts and selenides, which undergo a fast transalkylation reaction in the absence of any catalyst. Additionally, we demonstrate the presence of a dissociative mechanism in the absence of selenide groups. After incorporation of this DCC into selenide‐containing polymer materials, it was observed that the cross‐linked networks display varying dynamic exchange rates when using different alkylation reagents, suggesting that the reprocessing capacity of selenide‐containing materials can be regulated. Also, by incorporating selenonium salts into polymer materials, we observed that the materials exhibited good healing ability at elevated temperatures as well as excellent solvent resistance at ambient temperature. The synthesis of lower-rim p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene baskets and their complexations is described. The structures of synthesized compounds were confirmed using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, DEPT, NMR, and mass spectrometry. The complexation of these compounds with [60]fullerene (C60) was followed using uv-vis and 1H-NMR, but the stability constants were not determined due to irregular change in absorptions and small chemical shifts change. This paper presents the results of gravimetric studies carried out at a potash deposit to obtain the information on negative engineering–geological processes in rocks caused by subsoil development. The developed high-precision monitoring gravimetric observation method makes it possible to determine field variations over time. The created physicogeological gravimetric monitoring model is a homogeneous geological medium with an isolated area with a variable rock density. The dynamic gravity anomaly processing and interpreting based on the synthesis of qualitative and quantitative methods for obtaining the geological information from the gravimetric data have been adapted for the gravimetric monitoring purposes. The interpretation resulted in a distribution area and a probable depth interval of rock decompaction, as well as rock density variations, which characterize the decompaction rate. Examples are given in relation to testing the developed technology for dividing the decompressed zones into natural and man-made zones at the Verkhnekamskoe potash deposit in order to improve its operation safety. Racemic carboxylic acid, a Diels‐Alder cycloadduct derived from 5‐bromo‐3‐phenyl‐α‐pyrone and acrylate dienophile, was resolved into enantiomers by diastereomeric salt crystallization. Quinidine was used as a sole resolving base. The salt of (+)‐acid crystallized from aqueous acetonitrile solution. Once this salt was separated by filtration, quinidine salt with (−)‐acid crystallized from mother liquor. Background and objective: Table salt is an ideal vehicle for the delivery of micronutrients. This study assessed the quality of refined salts and locally processed salts in Awe and Keana local government areas, Nasarawa state, Nigeria. Materials and methods: Forty-five samples were collected from local markets in Nasarawa state. Moisture content, water-insoluble matter, and acid-insoluble matter were determined according to the AOAC method. Sodium chloride and iodine contents were determined by titration. The concentration of calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium was determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results and conclusion: Moisture content of the refined and unrefined salts ranged from 0.060 to 0.133% and 0.599 to 2.574%, respectively. The moisture content and amounts of water-insoluble and acid-insoluble matters in the unrefined salts were higher than the refined salts. The concentration of sodium chloride in most of the unrefined salts did not meet the national minimum limit of 97%. The concentration of iodine, calcium, potassium, and magnesium in the refined salts was significantly higher than the unrefined samples. Iodine content in the refined and unrefined salts ranged from 22.22 to 40.20 mg/kg and below the detection limit of 6.35 mg/kg, respectively. None of the unrefined salts met the minimum iodine content of 30 mg/kg. We concluded that the locally processed salts available in Awe and Keana local markets were highly deficient in essential elements and were of poor quality for use as table salt. 1,3-dicholoro-1,3-bis(dialkylamino)propenium salts are prepared by condensing N,N,-dialkylamides with dichloromethylene dimethyliminium chloride ("Viehe's salt"). The products are versatile synthons and can be used to make a variety of ligand types. Here, we report the syntheses of a number of new propenium salts and provide comprehensive characterization data for some that have already been described. Additionally, we have prepared a series of related 1,3-dihalo-1,3-bis(dimethylamino)propenium salts via halogen exchange reactions (F through I). Finally, all of the compounds described, including Viehe's Salt and several hydrolysis products, have been characterized in the solid state using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The symmetrical cations [Me2NC(X)CHC(X)NMe2]+ were found to take one of two general structural forms. The first (X = H or F) is planar, presumably maximizing the delocalization within the backbone of the cation, while the second form is markedly twisted (X = Cl, Br or I). Calculations indicate that the latter develop increasingly positive regions of the electrostatic potential on the halide substituents, allowing cation/anion interactions via halogen bonding to dominate in the extended solids. Soil-free sodic salt pans with local pH >10 have formed on loess and schist-derived clay surfaces in the semi-arid climate of Central Otago. This study identifies evaporative mineral distributions and associated variations in surface geochemistry, and these results are relevant to survival of rare halophytic plants on some of the pans. Evaporative salts on pan surfaces are dominated by NaCl from marine aerosols, and Na-sulphates and Na-carbonates. Some of the Na in evaporites was derived from alteration of schist-derived albite and Na-bearing smectite formed from albite. The high pH pan surfaces result from a combination of long-term (decades to millennia) albite alteration and short-term (minutes to months) Na-carbonate dissolution and recrystallisation. This muscovite is variably cemented by evaporative salts, and some crusts have abundant salt-dissolution voids. High pH has facilitated dissolution of aluminium and silica from albite and smectite, with evaporative precipitation of Al-oxyhydroxide contributing to crust cementation. Different dissolution rates of evaporative minerals during rain events and damp seasons results in differential mobility of salt components downslope. Heat‐stable salts (HSS), which trigger excessing foaming in absorber, are formed when protonated methyl diethanolamine (MDEA) reacts with the more acidic degraded products in the presence of dissolved oxygen (DO). The aim is to suppress the HSS formation in MDEA solution inaugurally employing a hybrid iron‐based nanoparticles (HINP) oxygen scavenger. It was discovered that the oxygen‐scavenging performance of a more cost‐effective 20 %Fe/HZSM5 was one‐fold higher than the 20 %Fe/MCM‐41. The former was verified for its superior structural properties. The Fe2+ on its surface first reacted with DO, preventing DO from oxidizing the MDEA. Consequently, the absence of hydroxyl radicals eliminated the potential of formic acid formation, hence suppressing the MDEA‐acid HSS formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The velocity of sheet flow on slopes is one of the key hydrodynamic parameters, and the velocity profile of sheet flow is important for understanding the soil erosion mechanism. The measurements of the slope sheet flow velocity were conducted under various underlying surfaces roughness through the tracing methods with the salt tracer and heat tracer, respectively, to investigate the influence of the underlying surface on the vertical velocity distribution of the sheet flow. The velocities of sheet flow were measured at three slope lengths (2, 3, and 4 m) under three slope gradients (5°, 10°, and 20°) and three flow rates (2, 5, and 8 L/min) on the slopes with various underlying surface roughness of polymethyl methacrylate, 80-mesh sandpaper (0.16 mm), and 24-mesh sandpaper (0.53 mm), respectively. The measurements were conducted in the water flumes with fixed bed, and the internal size of the flume was 5 m long, 0.2 m wide, and 0.2 m deep. The centroid velocity was adopted as the sheet flow velocity, and hydraulic parameters such as water depth, Reynolds number, Froude number, and Darcy-Weisbach resistance coefficient were also calculated to provide the background information of the experimental water flows. The results showed that the roughness of the underlying surface and the water depth both have significant effects on the velocity profile of the sheet flow (P<0.05). On the smooth underlying surface of polymethyl methacrylate, the boundary layer was fully developed to achieve a turbulent flow. The combined tracing method by using the salt and thermal tracers can be used to characterize the velocity profile of sheet flows when the water depth was 2-4 times of the bed roughness height and the flow was laminar; however, when the water depth were within or well beyond the roughness height, or when the flow was turbulent under the high velocity conditions, the combined tracing method failed to characterize the vertical velocity distribution of the sheet flow. A significant linear correlation was observed between the flow velocities measured by the two tracers, respectively, under the three experimental underlying surfaces (polymethyl methacrylate, 80-mesh sandpaper, and 24-mesh sandpaper), with the slopes of fitted lines of 1.015, 1.094, and 1.078, and the coefficients of determination R2 of 0.892, 0.824, and 0.760, respectively. As the roughness of underlying surface increased, the velocity difference between the two tracers increased as the results of the degree of turbulence of the sheet flow increased, which in turn affected deference in the water flow velocity measured by salt and thermal tracers, respectively. In the present paper, we report crystal structures of four types ([A(1)H][A(2)H]Y, [A(1)H]3[A(2)H]Y2, A(1)H[A(2)H···A(2)]Y, and A(1)H[A(1)H···A(2)]Y) of mixed salts containing the sulfate anion (Y = SO42−) and amino acids A, i.e., sarcosine (Sar), dimethylglycine (DMG), betaine (Bet), β-alanine (β-Ala), and l-proline (l-Pro): (β-AlaH)(DMGH)SO4·2H2O (I), (β-AlaH)(BetH)SO4 (II), (β-AlaH)(l-ProH)SO4 (III), (BetH)(l-ProH)SO4 (IV), (SarH)3(l-ProH)(SO4)2 (V), (β-AlaH)(l-ProH···l-Pro)SO4 (VI), and (β-AlaH)(β-AlaH···DMG)SO4 (VII). The O···O distances in dimeric cations (l-ProH···l-Pro) and (β-AlaH···DMG) are 2.450(3) and 2.5295(12) Å in (VI) and (VII), respectively. Crystal structure determinations of (β-AlaH)(BetH)SO4 (II) at 100 K (P21/n), 200 K (Pnma), 250 K (Pnma), and room temperature (Pnma) revealed a structural phase transition in the interval between 100 and 200 K. The discrepancy between the calculated (CBS-4M/Jenkins) and experimentally determined enthalpies of formation recently reported for the 2:1 salt TKX-50 raised the important question of whether the enthalpies of formation of other 2:1 C, H, N, O salts calculated using the CBS-4M/Jenkins method are reliable values. The standard (p° = 0.1 MPa) enthalpy of formation of crystalline guanidinium 5,5′-azotetrazolate (GZT) (453.6 ± 3.2 kJ/mol) was determined experimentally using static-bomb combustion calorimetry and was found to be in good agreement with the literature's values. However, using the CBS-4M/Jenkins method, the calculated enthalpy of formation of GZT was again in poor agreement with the experimentally determined value. The method we used recently to calculate the enthalpy of formation of TKX-50, based on the calculation of the heat of formation of the salt and of the corresponding neutral adduct, was then applied to GZT and provided excellent agreement with the experimentally determined value. Finally, in order to validate the findings, this method was also applied to predict the enthalpy of formation of a range of 1:1 and 2:1 salts (M+X− and (M+)2X2− salts, respectively), and the values obtained were comparable to experimentally determined values. The agreement using this approach was generally very good for both 1:1 and 2:1 salts; therefore, this approach provides a simple and reliable method which can be applied to calculate the enthalpy of formation of energetic C, H, N, O salts with much greater accuracy than the current, commonly used method. The Barbanza Peninsula (Galicia, NW Spain) is located on the west coast of Galicia. It is a narrow tongue of terrain with an area of 416 km2 and a high altitudinal gradient, with the top having a maximum height of more than 600 m at a distance of less than 5 Km from the sea. As a result of this, there is a significant rainfall gradient (from 900 to more than 3300 mm per year). In the peninsula, there are valuable historical buildings built with granite rock that show variable decay patterns. In this work, we have considered 14 of them, located in several parts of the peninsula, and we have studied their deterioration patterns. Some of them are close to the sea, with sea salt being a possible cause of decay, while for those located far from the sea, the high humidity and rainfall can be the most important cause of decay. A macroscopic study was carried out to determine the deterioration patterns. We have also analyzed the possible role of salts in the decay by using X-ray fluorescence as a screening technique to assess the presence of salts and the possible correlation of salts with the distance to the sea and using scanning electron microscopy to directly identify salts in some of the buildings. The most frequently reported decay is due to lichen growth (biological colonization). Depending on the proximity to the coast, the study area was divided into two zones: zone 1, closer to the sea (<1 km), with an important influence of sea salts and wind, and zone 2, further from the sea, with higher altitudes (center of the peninsula) and important rainfall, humidity, and therefore, biological colonization of stone surfaces. Crusts (to a lesser degree, because it is a mainly rural area) are more frequent in zone 1, but the state of conservation of stone in zone 1 is better than that in zone 2, possibly due to the concentration of urban centers in this zone and more interventions for cleaning stone surfaces. Finally, although we did not observe clear patterns in the appearance of salts in the buildings in agreement with the distance to the sea, we observed different patterns of salts in two of the buildings, one in each zone, which clearly show that, to some extent, salts are involved in decay. The discharge of inorganic salts contained in the effluent of the dyeing of cotton using reactive dyes to the public environment has been under scrutiny. In the present investigation the flocculant polydimethyldiallyl ammonium chloride and an anion resin coded by D301 were employed for the purification of the exhausted bath discharged from the dyeing of cotton knitted fabrics using reactive dyes. Through the purification presented the exhausted bath is transferred to the concentrated inorganic salt solution and then reused in the next batch of dyeing. The process consists of the exhausted bath collection, precipitation formation by means of the flocculation and resin adsorption. The results indicated that the concentrated inorganic salt solution is suitable for all the reactive dyes employed in the dyeing of cotton. The K/S values, color evenness and color fastness properties of the dyed fabrics using the inorganic salt solution are basically the same as those using distilled water. The results also indicate that 72.0% of water and 71.1% of inorganic salt used for the dyeing can be saved when the inorganic solution is recycled four times, which means that the amount of the inorganic salt discharge to the environment can be reduced by 71.1%. An efficient stepwise electrochemical oxidative seleno(thio)cyanation/cyclization tandem reaction of enamides with XCN salts (X=Se and S) was developed herein to access a diverse range of C3‐functionalized benzoselenophenes and benzothiophenes. A new polymorf of Schiff base (N-(4′-methoxybenzylidene)-4-aminobenzoic acid) and five of its distinct salts (chloride, bromide, nitrate, hydrosulfate and dihydrophosphate) were designed and synthesized. Detailed examinations were conducted to determine the structure and spectral properties of these compounds, employing methods like X-ray diffraction, as well as IR, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Interestingly, all the synthesized Schiff base salts displayed fluorescence when in solid state. However, the intensity of this fluorescence was found to differ, depending on the type of anion present within the structure. This result provides evidence that a strategy similar to supramolecular complexation can effectively be used to adjust the emission wavelength and control the intensity of fluorescence in the resulting solid materials. Electrolytes have a wide range of technological applications. Despite the recent improvements in characterizing and predicting the phase behavior of microemulsion systems by hydrophilic-lipophilic deviation (HLD) and net-average curvature (NAC) frameworks, they are ineffective in the presence of different salts. This work seeks to bridge this gap by investigating the influence of salt nature on the microemulsion phase formulation. First, a one-dimensional salinity scan on different microemulsion systems consisting of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate as a surfactant, hexane as an oil and, several brines was carried out, and the effect of each salt on the phase behavior were precisely evaluated. The results for optimum salinity and solubilization parameter of different salts were consistent with the Hofmeister series. In addition, multiple linear regression model is presented to accurately predicting the optimum salinity of different salts using this research data and all the available experimental data. The results revealed that the values estimated by this model is in significant consistency with the experimental data by correlation coefficient of 0.92. Finally, the effect of salt type on the NAC parameters (length parameter, and characteristic length) were evaluated to improve the predicting ability of this equation of state in the presence of various salts. We found that salt nature has a significant impact on both these parameters. It was found that the length parameter is linearly dependent on the optimum ionic strength of salts while the salting-out capacity of each salt was predominant factor affecting the characteristic length. In this manuscript we report the synthesis and X-ray characterization of two cyanidoaurate telluronium salts, namely (3-fluorophenyl)(methyl)(phenyl)telluronium dicyanidoaurate [(3-F-Ph)(Me)(Ph)Te][Au(CN)2] (1) and methyldiphenyltelluronium dicyanidoaurate [(Me)(Ph)2Te][Au(CN)2] (2). In the solid state, the tellurium atom establishes three concurrent and directional chalcogen bonds (ChBs) with the adjacent anions, in both compounds. These charge-assisted ChBs (CAChBs) have been analyzed using DFT calculations and several computational tools. The MEP surface analysis discloses the existence of three σ-holes at the Te-atoms capable of establishing strong CAChBs with the counter-ions. In addition, significant charge transfer from the lone pair orbital at the N-atom of the anion to the antibonding σ*(Te–C) orbital of the cation is observed in some cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Millions of tons of acetyl derivatives such as acetic acid and acetic anhydride are produced each year. These building blocks of chemical industry are elaborated into esters, amides, and eventually polymer materials, pharmaceuticals, and other consumer products. Most acetyls are produced industrially using homogeneous precious metal catalysts, principally rhodium and iridium complexes. We report here that abundant nickel can be paired with imidazole-derived carbenes or the corresponding salts to catalyze methyl ester carbonylation with turnover frequency (TOF) exceeding 150 hour–1 and turnover number (TON) exceeding 1600, benchmarks that invite comparisons to state-of-the-art rhodium-based systems and considerably surpass known triphenylphosphine-based nickel catalysts, which operate with TOF ~7 hour–1 and TON ~100 under the same conditions. A facile and efficient method to synthesize thioethers from sulfonyl chlorides and benzylic trimethylammonium salts is presented. This protocol provides a simple and direct approach to realize the reductive coupling reaction of readily available sulfonyl chlorides with benzyl ammonium salts in the presence of triphenylphosphine along with base via C−N cleavage of benzyl ammonium salts. A rapid synthesis of chiral sulfoxide-functionalized meta-terphenyl derivatives by a 2,5-[C4+C2] ring transformation reaction of pyrylium salts with in situ generated enantiomerically pure α-sulfinylacetaldehydes is described in this paper. This synthetic method demonstrates, for the first time, the use of α-sulfinylacetaldehydes in a reaction sequence initiated by the nucleophilic attack of pyrylium salts by α-sulfinylcarbanions to generate chiral aromatic systems. The method presented shows a broad applicability starting with various methyl sulfoxides and a number of functionalized pyrylium salts, furnishing meta-terphenyls with complex substitution patterns from readily accessible starting compounds. Soil salinity is a well-known abiotic factor affecting the germination and seedling growth of various plant species. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of different chloride salts (NaCl, KCl and MgCl2) and sulfate salts (Na2SO4, K2SO4 and MgSO4) on the seed germination and early seedling growth of two important ethnomedicinal shrubs of North Africa and the Mediterranean basin (Ballota hirsuta and Myrtus communis). Seeds of these species were subjected to five salinity levels (0–100 mM) and incubated at 20 °C under a light regime (12 h photoperiod). Both species demonstrated their highest germination percentage under control conditions (i.e., without salinity). However, as salinity levels increased, the germination percentages for both species decreased, regardless of the type of salt used. Cations appeared to be more determinative than the anions in regulating the seed germination of both species. M. communis seeds displayed greater sensitivity to sodium (Na+) salts, especially when accompanied with chloride (Cl−) anions. At the higher salt concentrations (75 and 100 mM), Na+ salts had a more pronounced inhibitory effect on M. communis seedling growth compared to potassium (K+) and magnesium (Mg2+) salts. Conversely, Mg2+ salts were more detrimental to seedling growth in B. hirsuta. Based on our results, it can be concluded that both of these species are able to tolerate a moderate level of salinity. Overall, B. hirsuta may be a promising choice for rehabilitating the soils dominated by chloride salts, while M. communis could be utilized for restoring sulfate-dominated soils. Soluble salts and clays are major intrinsic causes of degradation of porous cultural heritage materials. Identifying their presence and concentrations can allow environmental control to prevent decay before it is observed. Such control is often energy- and carbon-intensive and better targeted towards those objects that require it rather than a general approach. The use of poultices has been investigated to determine salt species and concentrations in stone to replace drilling samples. A non-invasive method using two types of moisture meter has been developed to map the conductivity of salt solutions in stone. Fourier transform and near-infrared spectroscopies have been investigated to non-invasively quantify the amount of muscovite clay in limestones without the need to take drilled samples. Salts can react with extrinsic acetic acid from display and storage environments, causing extensive damaging surface efflorescences. A rapid analytical procedure based on external reflectance Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) microscopy has been developed. This allows analysis of multiple salts on a cuneiform tablet surface. A library of functionalized pyrrolidine‐based triazolium salts containing a BF4 counterions have been prepared from readily accessible 2‐pyrolidinone via one‐pot reaction protocol. By separating imine‐ether intermediates, a detailed mechanistic pathway has been investigated. Studied mechanistic investigation improved the synthetic process, resulting in higher yields for pyrrolidine‐based triazolium NHC structures and the large‐scale synthesis of chiral NHCs pre‐catalyst with free OH‐group. The presence of a hydroxyl functional group on the NHCs has the potential for further functionalization and for non‐covalent control over catalytic reactions in which the NHCs can serve as organocatalysts or donor ligands for organometallic catalysis. This benzoin catalytic system was investigated by testing different solvents and aldehydes, NHC‐catalysts loading and time variation effects to prepare a broad range of functionalized benzoin compounds with high yields. The highly reactive pyrrolidine‐based triazolium salts (TACF5) showed significant potential application of organocatalysts in benzoin condensation‐oxidation. EDG and EWG substituted α‐hydroxy ketone derivatives were directly converted to corresponding benzil scaffolds from an aldehyde through one‐pot reaction condition with MnO2 acting as an oxidating reagent in open‐air atmosphere. Recently, the reaction speed and cycle performance of hexavalent chromium reduction over microsized zero-valent iron (ZVI) with an Fe0 core and iron oxide (FeOx) shell structure have been improved by activating the Fe0-core electrons through electromagnetic coupling between Fe0-core electrons and charges (hexavalent chromium in solution, double-charge layers of the ZVI/solution interface). Herein, the abovementioned electromagnetic coupling was greatly increased by adding salt (CH3COONa, NaCl, NaNO3, and Na2SO4) in the hexavalent chromium solution to increase the charge response. Adding salt greatly improved the reaction speed and cycle performance of hexavalent chromium reduction. It took 8 min to reduce hexavalent chromium with CH3COONa to below the discharge standard of wastewater in the first cycle and 20 min after reducing for 20 cycles. The best apparent rate of constant value (0.416 (min)-1) is nearly four times larger than those without salts. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the production of amorphous iron oxide shell with salt. The salt improves the hexavalent chromium reduction speed and cycle performance and impedes the Fe0-core-electron transfer via the produced Fe2O3, resulting in existence of an optimized salt dosage. This work aims to provide an effective route for enhancing the removal efficiency and cycle performance of heavy-metal–ion reduction via Fe0. And this work also proposes a novel viewpoint that adding salt in waste water would increase the electromagnetic coupling between the charges in solution and Fe0-core electrons which could finally activate the redox reaction. Novel multicomponent crystal forms were obtained from reactions of trans-disubstituted cyclam derivatives with flufenamic and salicylic acids. The reactions of H2(4-CF3PhCH2)2cyclam with those acids led to the formation of salts of the formulae [H2{H2(4-CF3PhCH2)2cyclam}](3-CF3PhNHC6H4COO)2 and [H2{H2(4-CF3PhCH2)2cyclam}](HOC6H4COO)2, respectively. The reaction of H2(PhCH2)2cyclam with flufenamic acid led to the formation of the salt [H2{H2(PhCH2)2cyclam}](3-CF3PhNHC6H4COO)2, whereas its reaction with salicylic acid afforded the ionic cocrystal [H2(PhCH2)2cyclam](HOC6H4COOH)2·[H2{H2(PhCH2)2cyclam}](HOC6H4COO)2. The compounds obtained were fully characterized and tested against several yeasts as well as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The results have shown that the new multicomponent forms display relevant antimicrobial activity when compared to their parent cyclam derivatives, highlighting the importance of exploring synergistic effects to unveil new and efficient antimicrobial agents. Improving the slow kinetics of the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction is highly desirable for accelerating the commercialization of water electrolysis. Herein, amorphous Fe/Co-based tannic acid salts were synthesized by assembly of Fe3+, Co2+, and tannic acid, which are loaded on carbon nanotube surface forming a coaxial cable-like microstructure and act as a pre-catalyst for oxygen evolution. The pre-catalyst shows an excellent catalytic activity with a high TOF value of 0.949 s−1 at an overpotential of 350 mV in 1 M KOH. The electrochemical test and careful characterization of the post-catalyst demonstrates that the superb performance comes from the in situ derived small sized oxyhydroxides loaded on the carbon nanotube surface. The amorphous feature of the tannic acid salt facilitates the re-construction and formation of oxyhydroxides. This article described an unprecedented synthesis of trifluoromethylthiophosphonium salts from allyl trifluoromethyl sulfoxide and phosphines in the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) through Mislow-Evans-type rearrangement. The resulting trifluoromethylthiophosphonium salts were firstly isolated and fully characterized. These fluoroalkylphosphonium salts, as exemplified by trifluoromethylthio triphenylphosphonium salt (6a), exhibited unique and versatile reaction with nucleophiles and deoxygenative trifluoromethylthiolation reaction of carboxylic acids. The tomb of Cyrus the Great, founder of the Persian Empire, is considered one of the most important monuments of Iran. Its advanced state of deterioration motivated the need to carry out a study focused on analyzing the possible damage caused by the presence of soluble salts, and to assess the suitability of an electrokinetic treatment for their extraction. Preliminary diagnostics carried out on stone samples taken from the tomb confirmed that it is affected by the action of soluble salts, and especially by the presence of nitrates and sulfates. The effectiveness and possible harmful effects caused by electrokinetic treatment were evaluated, under laboratory conditions, using the same limestone that makes up the tomb. The obtained results show that this treatment, in a short period of time, reduces the ionic content, reaching high percentages of anion extraction, without causing any damage, which indicates that it is suitable for this type of stone. Halophilic archaea thriving in hypersaline environments, such as salt lakes, offer models for putative life in extraterrestrial brines such as those found on Mars. However, little is known about the effect of the chaotropic salts that could be found in such brines, such as MgCl2, CaCl2 and (per)chlorate salts, on complex biological samples like cell lysates which could be expected to be more representative of biomarkers left behind putative extraterrestrial life forms. We used intrinsic fluorescence to study the salt dependence of proteomes extracted from five halophilic strains: Haloarcula marismortui, Halobacterium salinarum, Haloferax mediterranei, Halorubrum sodomense and Haloferax volcanii. These strains were isolated from Earth environments with different salt compositions. Among the five strains that were analysed, H. mediterranei stood out as a results of its high dependency on NaCl for its proteome stabilization. Interestingly, the results showed contrasting denaturation responses of the proteomes to chaotropic salts. In particular, the proteomes of strains that are most dependent or tolerant on MgCl2 for growth exhibited higher tolerance towards chaotropic salts that are abundant in terrestrial and Martian brines. These experiments bridge together global protein properties and environmental adaptation and help guide the search for protein‐like biomarkers in extraterrestrial briny environments. Quinobenzazepines are useful in medicinal chemistry, but their synthesis is very challenging. Herein, we designed and synthesized a range of multi‐functional chalcone‐based quinolinium salts; their synthetic application in the rapid and straightforward construction of quinobenzazepines was successfully explored. A wide range of oxa‐bridged quinobenzazepine polycycles were afforded serendipitously through a dearomative cascade reaction of our newly developed quinolinium salts and acetylacetone. The fundamental properties of azaporphyrins can be modulated over a wide range by changing the number of meso‐nitrogen atoms. Reported herein are the first examples of 5,10,15,20‐tetraaryl‐5‐azaporphyrinium (MTAMAP) salts, which were prepared via metal‐templated cyclization of the corresponding zinc(II) and copper(II) complexes of 10‐aryl‐1‐chloro‐19‐benzoyl‐5,15‐dimesityl‐10‐azabiladiene‐ac. The inclusion of one meso‐nitrogen atom in the 5,10,15,20‐tetraarylporphyrin skeleton considerably changes the redox and optical properties as well as the degree of aromaticity of the porphyrin ring. The possibility of the coupled electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide and hydrogen in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine and its N-substituted salts in the presence of acids with different pKa values was studied. It was found that the strength of the acid affects the efficiency of the process; in particular, methylsulfonic acid promotes the coupled hydrogen formation and the reduction of carbon dioxide to formic acid. We investigate theoretically the surface tension between two immiscible liquids containing antagonistic and regular salts. The mean-field model includes the electrostatic energy and the Gibbs transfer energy of the ions. We find the Donnan potential difference between the liquids and solve the Poisson–Boltzmann equation to calculate the potential and ion density profiles. When the liquids contain only a regular salt, the surface tension increases when compared to the no-salt case; in contrast, the surface tension is reduced when they contain only an antagonistic salt. When both salts are present, the surface tension can either further decrease or increase depending on the preferential solvation of the ions, in agreement with published experimental observations. During the last decades, multicomponent photoinitiating systems have been the focus of intense research efforts, especially for the design of visible light photoinitiating systems. Although highly reactive three-component and even four-component photoinitiating systems have been designed, the complexity to elaborate such mixtures has incited researchers to design monocomponent Type II photoinitiators. Organic salts tetrabutylammonium borofluorate and tetraethylammonium borofluorate are simulated by molecular dynamics as pure forms and as part of a composite with α-Al2O3 limited by the (110) plane. The obtained characteristic freezing points and structural change points agree with experimental data. Salinization is a worldwide emerging threat to freshwater systems. It can be caused by various salts with different toxicity to freshwater organisms. Populations of freshwater organisms have been shown to rapidly evolve adaptations to salinity, yet it remains unclear whether adaptation to one salt increases tolerance or, conversely, susceptibility to other salts. Using an experimental evolution approach, we subjected replicate populations of a planktonic monogonont rotifer species (Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas) to non‐saline and NaCl‐enriched environments. A subsequent multigenerational common garden (CG) transplant experiment demonstrated rapid microevolutionary adaptation to salinity. A second CG experiment provided evidence that adaptation to NaCl increases tolerance mainly to CaCl2 but to a much lesser extent to Na2SO4. Increased tolerance to CaCl2 was associated with increased tolerance to Ca2+ ion toxicity. In contrast, acquired tolerance to Na2SO4 could not be shown to involve an improved ability to cope with SO42− ion toxicity. Our results highlight that the evolution of cross‐tolerance may expand the temporal and spatial dimensions under which the ecological consequences of salt adaptation apply. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Similar to lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), during the first charge/discharge process of lithium‐ion capacitors (LICs), lithium‐intercalated anodes (e.g., silicon, graphite, and hard carbon) also exhibit irreversible lithium intercalation behaviors, such as the formation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI), which will consume Li+ in the electrolyte and significantly reduce the electrochemical performance of the system. Therefore, pre‐lithiation is an indispensable procedure for LICs. At present, commercial LICs mostly use lithium metal as the lithium source to compensate for the irreversible capacity loss, which has the demerits of operational complexity and danger. However, the pre‐lithiation strategy based on cathode sacrificial lithium salts (CSLSs) has been proposed, which has the advantages of low cost, simple operation, environmental protection, and safety. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a timely and comprehensive summary of the application of CSLSs to LICs. In this review, the important roles of pre‐lithiation in LICs are detailed, and different pre‐lithiation methods are reviewed and compared systematically and comprehensively. After that, we systematically discuss the pre‐lithiation strategies based on CSLSs and mainly introduce the lithium extraction mechanism of CSLSs and the influence of intrinsic characteristics and doping amount of CSLSs on LICs performance. The work is devoted to the study of the influence of synthesis conditions on the properties of water-insoluble rubidium salts of phosphotungstic acid (PTA). Such heteropoly compounds have a wide range of applications, including in the field of electrocatalysts and solid electrolytes for various electrochemical devices. The acid salts of PTA with high activity of acid sites on the particle surface are of particular interest. It is known that the properties of water-insoluble PTA salts strongly depend on synthesis conditions, such as the ratio of reagents, temperature, concentrations, and other parameters. The work examines the influence of the ratio and concentration of reagents on the sizes of crystallites and agglomerates, specific surface area (SSA), porosity, water content, and ionic conductivity of the synthesized PTA salts. The SSA value of the obtained samples varied in the range of 84–123 m2 g−1, and the ionic conductivity was 13–90 mS cm−1 at room temperature and 75% RH. An increase in the acid concentration and the degree of proton substitution led to an increase in SSA, accompanied by an increase in particle sizes without changing the size of crystallites. This study presented the successful deposition of layered double hydroxide (LDH) onto non‐pretreated carbon cloth (CC) using lactate salts as raw materials. Specifically, under the hydrothermal condition using urea hydrolysis and lactate salts as the source of Mg and Al, MgAl‐LDH was deposited onto the CC surface, which is typically treated with organic solvents and acids to enhance its hydrophilicity prior to LDH deposition. X‐ray diffraction patterns, field‐emission electron microscope images, and elemental analyses revealed the deposition and coating of hexagonal platy particles of a carbonate‐type MgAl‐LDH with pseudo hexagonal phase and Mg/Al molar ratio of 1 onto CC. This LDH coating was not achieved when using chlorides and nitrates, which commonly used Mg and Al sources. Herein, a direct C‐2 alkylation of Heterocyclic‐N‐oxides with alkyl amines as Katritzky salts via visible‐light induced deaminative approach was developed. Mechanistic studies revealed that Katritzky salts and base were involved to generate an EDA complex, which underwent intermolecular single electron transfer (SET) to give an alkyl radical intermediate. Finally, the alkyl radical intermediate further underwent‐addition with heterocyclic‐N‐oxide substrates to access the desired products with 63–94% yield. This study evaluates the effect of lithium salts on the structural, electrochemical, and thermal properties of cassava starch solid biopolymer electrolytes (SBPEs). Films of SBPEs were synthesized using plasticizing agents and lithium salts (LiCl, Li2SO4, and CF3LiSO3) via thermochemical method. The SBPEs with lithium salts exhibited characteristic FTIR bands starch, with slight variations in the vibration oxygen-related functional groups compared to salt-free biopolymer spectra. The RCOH/COC index (short-range crystallinity) was higher in the films synthesized without lithium salt and the lowest value was established in the films synthesized with Li2SO4. Thermal degradation involved dehydration between 40 to 110 °C and molecular decomposition between 245 to 335 °C. Degradation temperatures were close when synthesized with salts but differed in films without lithium salt. DSC revealed two endothermic processes: one around 65 °C linked to crystalline structure changes and the second at approximately 271 °C associated with glucose ring decomposition. The electrochemical behavior of the SBPEs varied with the salts used, resulting in differences in the potential and current of peaks from the redox processes and its conductivity, presenting the lowest value (8.42 × 10−5 S cm−1) in the SBPE films without salt and highest value (9.54 × 10−3 S cm−1) in the films with Li2SO4. It was concluded that the type of lithium salt used in SBPEs synthesis affected their properties. Monascus purpureus is a red pigment-producing fungus. In the present study, the effect of fish hydrolysate and sodium chloride on the colour of quinoa flour fermented with M. purpureus was analysed. The colour of each sample was evaluated in CIELAB space (L*, a*, b*), in addition to the C:N ratio. The minimum fermentation time was eight days and the values of L* (44.66 ± 0.532), a* (20.27 ± 0.323), b*(17.89 ± 1.342) and a C:N ratio of 11.05 ± 0.240 were obtained. Therefore, there is an effect of supplementation on increasing the red colour of the meal.
