W. V. O. Quine is generally seen as one of the foremost empiricists of the twentieth century. For large parts of his career, the label “empiricist” is accurate; in his mature work, however, he integrated decidedly antiempiricist elements in his epistemology. From The Roots of Reference onward, he enlists natural selection and innate cognitive structures to ensure that scientific concepts have a “degree of objective validity.” From From Stimulus to Science onward, he also explains the very possibility of communication via a preestablished harmony of innate cognitive structures that is guaranteed by natural selection. This article reconstrues the reasons that compelled Quine to these commitments, and it details the development of Quine’s thinking on these topics across more than 3 decades; in particular, the article argues that recognizing that so-called stimulus meanings are private decisively shaped Quine’s views. By means of a critical evaluation, the article argues that natural selection can make plausible that scientific concepts have a degree of objective validity—if this Quinean claim is properly understood; in contrast, the article suggests, with recourse to research by Robert C. Richardson, that it is doubtful whether natural selection can underpin the preestablished harmony that Quine requires to explain communication.

The increasing availability of high–dimensional, fine–grained data about human behaviour, gathered from mobile sensing studies and in the form of digital footprints, is poised to drastically alter the way personality psychologists perform research and undertake personality assessment. These new kinds and quantities of data raise important questions about how to analyse the data and interpret the results appropriately. Machine learning models are well suited to these kinds of data, allowing researchers to model highly complex relationships and to evaluate the generalizability and robustness of their results using resampling methods. The correct usage of machine learning models requires specialized methodological training that considers issues specific to this type of modelling. Here, we first provide a brief overview of past studies using machine learning in personality psychology. Second, we illustrate the main challenges that researchers face when building, interpreting, and validating machine learning models. Third, we discuss the evaluation of personality scales, derived using machine learning methods. Fourth, we highlight some key issues that arise from the use of latent variables in the modelling process. We conclude with an outlook on the future role of machine learning models in personality research and assessment.

To make a fundamental shift towards value orientation, manufacturing companies strategically move to integrate services into their portfolio. While manufacturing firms rely on production information systems as the backbone of their operations, these systems are based on product structure models (e.g., bill of materials). This poses a problem because services do not adhere to the goods-dominant perspective of product structures. To solve this divide, this paper proposes an integrative mathematical model for both production systems and service systems. This model draws upon concepts of service-dominant logic and is based on hypergraph theory. To illustrate that the production structure model includes both product structures and process structures, we further demonstrate that the production structure model can be transformed into either. Therefore, our theoretical contribution lies in introducing a structural model for production systems that is compatible with structures of a service system model. For practice, this model enables the development of production information systems that can plan and control products, services and hybrids.

Organizational public value and organizational reputation are different concepts stemming from independent research tradi-tions. Nevertheless, the constructs share several similarities, which make a systematic comparison and investigation of their relationship a promising and necessary endeavor. In this paper, we compare the two constructs along seven dimensions, with special attention to the micro-level of individual psychology. Several similarities regarding strategic relevance, locus of control, measurement unit, process dynamics, and axiological nature exist. As we will see, the constructs differ signifi-cantly with respect to the basis of evaluation and their dominant logic. We draw on a recent micro-foundation of public value to elaborate on these differences and develop propositions about how the constructs are related. Public value applies a holistic basis of evaluation covering all basic values and collective frames of reference, while reputation is more adaptive. Moreover, public value follows a logic of contribution (to a collective), while reputation follows a logic of recognition (by a collective). The two constructs should not be taken as similar or used interchangeably. However, both fields can benefit from a joint theoretical basis and micro-foundation, as well as from connected research programs. Practitioners should consider both constructs in connection.

Balancing the allocation of games in sports competitions is an important organizational task that can have serious financial consequences. In this paper, we examine data from 9,930 soccer games played in the top German, Spanish, French, and English soccer leagues between 2007/2008 and 2016/2017. Using a machine learning technique for variable selection and applying a semi-parametric analysis of radius matching on the propensity score, we find that all four leagues have a lower attendance as the share of stadium capacity in games that take place on non-frequently played days compared to the frequently played days. In addition, we find that in all leagues except for the English Premier League, there is a significantly lower home advantage for the underdog teams on non-frequent days. Our findings suggest that the current schedule favors underdog teams with fewer home games on non-frequent days. Therefore, to increase the fairness of the competitions, it is necessary to adjust the allocation of the home games on non-frequent days in a way that eliminates any advantage driven by the schedule. These findings have implications for the stakeholders of the leagues, as well as for coaches and players.

Youth around the world are increasingly dependent on social media and mobile smartphones. This phenomenon has generated considerable speculation regarding the impacts of extensive technology engagement on cognitive development and how these habits might be ‘rewiring’ the brains of those growing up in a heavily digital era. In an initial study conducted with healthy young adults, we utilized behavioral and self-report measures to demonstrate associations between smartphone usage habits (assessed both subjectively and objectively) and individual differences in intertemporal preference and reward sensitivity. In a follow-up neuroimaging study, we used probabilistic tractography of diffusion-weighted images to determine how these individual difference characteristics might relate to variation in white matter connectivity, focusing on two dissociable pathways—one connecting the ventral striatum (vSTR) with the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and the other connecting the vSTR with the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). Regression analyses revealed opposing patterns of association, with stronger vSTR–vmPFC connectivity corresponding to increased mobile technology engagement but stronger vSTR–dlPFC connectivity corresponding to decreased engagement. Taken together, the results of these two studies provide important foundational evidence for both neural and cognitive factors that can be linked to how individuals engage with mobile technology.

While some low-cost carriers such as JetBlue offer free WIFI, full-service airlines such as United are reducing their services to the bare bones. Starting from this phenomenon, called «convergence of models», this book rethinks the way business models are perceived. We propose a new customer-centric approach, leaving aside the airline-centric reflection. We broke down the four generally accepted business models – low-cost, full-service, regional and leisure – into components and patterns, resulting in a skeleton called «Airline Business Model Framework». This new Airline Business Model Framework gives a new perspective on airline business strategies. We propose a new terminology for dominant business models: no-frills, unbundlers, boutique, and connectors. Successfully tested with more than 130 carriers, the Airline Business Model Framework is a powerful tool for airlines’ employees and aviation professionals to understand their business and compare themselves to competitors.

When using digital technologies, various data traces are left behind for collection, storage and analysis. Innovative solutions for information systems are needed that mitigate privacy risks and foster information privacy. One mechanism to achieve this are privacy nudges. Nudges are a concept from behavioural economics to influence individual’s decisions. This paper focusses on building an integrative understanding of privacy nudging. Specifically, we conceptualize the constituting characteristics of privacy nudges by conducting a systematic literature review to cover the current state of knowledge in the interdisciplinary privacy nudge literature stream. We structure the intrapersonal factors that determine effectiveness for each privacy nudge in a morphological box and conceptualize on this basis current research coverage as well as demand for future research. Finally, we develop theoretical propositions contributing to the discussion of how to study and design effective privacy nudges that can pave the way for more privacy sensitive IT systems.

Context: In situ patient data over multiple weeks are needed to explore the potential of nocturnal cough and sleep quality as digital biomarkers for asthma. Methods: Ninety-four asthmatics need to complete a 29-day EMA study in which nocturnal smartphone sensor data is recorded and daily questionnaires of 13 to 45 items are delivered by an adapted version of the MobileCoach app. Patients are withdrawn from the study in case of non-adherence on more than five days. Adherence is not financially incentivized. Appointments with health professionals take place on the first and last day. Intervention: Engagement, operationalized as response rates to the questionnaires, is promoted using the following strategies: first, patients discuss with health professionals how they will integrate the study app tasks in their daily routine. Second, working alliance is established through the chat-based interaction with the app’s virtual study nurse. Third, non-adherence is illustrated as lost hearts to elicit loss aversion. Finally, in case of non-adherence (on consecutive days) a notification system sends out reminder SMS to patients (prompts calls from health professionals). Results: The first 29 patients successfully completed 791 of the 810 daily questionnaires (97.65%). 58 reminder SMS were sent to patients and 13 calls by health professionals were triggered. One patient lost all hearts and was withdrawn from the study. The remaining patients completed the study with an average of 4.61/5 hearts (SD = 0.83). Conclusion: The preliminary results suggest that the employed strategies successfully promoted engagement in a population known for non-adherence in clinical practice.

Context: Intervention components of a MobileCoach based smartphone app to promote walking were assessed in a seven-week micro-randomized trial (N = 274). In order to make a significant contribution to public health, the app must also engage those at higher risk for adverse health outcomes, i.e. elderly, less active or less healthy participants. Methods: In a secondary analysis, longitudinal trajectories of participants’ number of daily app sessions were clustered using the k-means algorithm with an alternating number of clusters. An app session was defined as any interaction between a participant and the app separated by at least five minutes between interactions. The final number of clusters was determined based on five different clustering quality criteria. Results: Two different clusters emerged: stable high engagement (31.3% of participants, 7.6 (SD = 2.9) mean daily app sessions) and stable low engagement (68.7% of participants, 1.5 (SD = 1.4) mean daily app sessions). Highly engaged participants were older (45.8 vs. 40.1 years, p < .001, d = 0.43) and accumulated more steps per day during the study (7373 vs. 5828 steps per day, p < .001, d = 0.57). Clusters did not differ with regard to participants’ baseline physical activity, gender, body mass index, self-reported health status or education. Conclusions: A chatbot-based walking app engaged participants of a micro-randomized trial over a period of seven weeks independent of their risk for adverse health outcomes. Thus, participants with low risk for adverse health outcomes at baseline do not drive high engagement with the app.

This talk gives an overview of the latest results in the general rank decoding problem. The main question is, how efficiently one can decode a given rank-metric code, without any known algebraic structure, from a random error. Answers to this question are of high interest, in particular in code-based cryptography, where rank-metric codes have extensively been studied to be used in a McEliece-type public key cryptosystem. During the last 5 years several algorithms have been proposed to solve (or at least improve) this problem – some deterministic, some probabilistic. We will introduce these algorithms, show the corresponding computational complexities, and state some open problems in this regard.

The digital age has yielded systems that increasingly reduce the complexity of our everyday lives. As such, smart personal assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri combine the comfort of intuitive natural language interaction with the utility of personalized and situation-dependent information and service provision. However, research on SPAs is becoming increasingly complex and opaque. To reduce complexity, this paper introduces a classification system for SPAs. Based on a systematic literature review, a cluster analysis reveals five SPA archetypes: Adaptive Voice (Vision) Assistants, Chatbot Assistants, Embodied Virtual Assistants, Passive Pervasive Assistants, and Natural Conversation Assistants.

In the current process of crowdfunding and crowdworking, many criteria-based conditions must be considered on different platforms. Assignments must be initiated for each platform, which costs time, money and resources. In order to counteract these challenges and reduce transactions, we developed a blockchain-based platform using a design-oriented approach. This platform accompanies the process from requirements to self-executing, event- and condition-controlled contracts in a partially automated manner. Based on the literature of crowdfunding, crowdworking and blockchain-based smart contracts, we derived requirements for a platform creation. While we contribute to the literature by eliciting design-oriented requirements, we show practical implications by building a blockchain-based platform concept for facilitating a more efficient combined crowdfunding and crowdworking process by reducing transactions.

Internal crowd work has emerged as a new form of digital gainful employment that changes the nature of work. However, the possible effects of internal crowd work on the individual level have been largely neglected. In this paper, we therefore present our research in progress which is concerned with the effects of work characteristics in internal crowd work that have impact on the individual’s empowerment and satisfaction. Thus, we developed our research model and conducted an online survey amongst 118 internal crowd workers of a Swiss bank who were asked to test new software. Our expected contribution will increase the understanding of internal crowd work and provide important insights for organizations to (re-) design work on internal IT-platforms.

Background: Smartphones enable the implementation of just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) that tailor the delivery of health interventions over time to user- and time-varying context characteristics. Ideally, JITAIs include effective intervention components, and delivery tailoring is based on effective moderators of intervention effects. Using machine learning techniques to infer each user’s context from smartphone sensor data is a promising approach to further enhance tailoring. Objective: The primary objective of this study is to quantify main effects, interactions, and moderators of 3 intervention components of a smartphone-based intervention for physical activity. The secondary objective is the exploration of participants’ states of receptivity, that is, situations in which participants are more likely to react to intervention notifications through collection of smartphone sensor data. Methods: In 2017, we developed the Assistant to Lift your Level of activitY (Ally), a chatbot-based mobile health intervention for increasing physical activity that utilizes incentives, planning, and self-monitoring prompts to help participants meet personalized step goals. We used a microrandomized trial design to meet the study objectives. Insurees of a large Swiss insurance company were invited to use the Ally app over a 12-day baseline and a 6-week intervention period. Upon enrollment, participants were randomly allocated to either a financial incentive, a charity incentive, or a no incentive condition. Over the course of the intervention period, participants were repeatedly randomized on a daily basis to either receive prompts that support self-monitoring or not and on a weekly basis to receive 1 of 2 planning interventions or no planning. Participants completed a Web-based questionnaire at baseline and postintervention follow-up. Results: Data collection was completed in January 2018. In total, 274 insurees (mean age 41.73 years; 57.7% [158/274] female) enrolled in the study and installed the Ally app on their smartphones. Main reasons for declining participation were having an incompatible smartphone (37/191, 19.4%) and collection of sensor data (35/191, 18.3%). Step data are available for 227 (82.8%, 227/274) participants, and smartphone sensor data are available for 247 (90.1%, 247/274) participants. Conclusions: This study describes the evidence-based development of a JITAI for increasing physical activity. If components prove to be efficacious, they will be included in a revised version of the app that offers scalable promotion of physical activity at low cost., JMIR Research Protocols, 8 (1), ISSN:1929-0748

The digital age has yielded information systems (IS) that reduce the complexity of our everyday lives. As such, smart personal assistants (SPAs) like Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri combine the comfort of intuitive natural language interaction with the utility of personalized and situation-dependent information and service provision. These systems collect and analyze users’ personal data which raises information privacy concerns. The situational trade-off between enjoying personalization benefits and taking privacy risks is known as personalization-privacy paradox (PPP). Although approaches exist to solve the PPP by system design, SPAs novelty and technical sophistication require to research for adequate solutions. Hence, this research-in-progress report shows where we stand on our way towards solving the PPP for SPAs.

Initial Coin Offerings are a new type of crowdbased fundraising mechanism that uses the blockchain to issue tokens to a crowd of people in exchange for funds that blockchain start-ups use to develop their business. Unfortunately, due to the recency of this new phenomenon, there is no systematic understanding of the ICO process and its underlying process characteristics. However, companies engaging in ICOs should be able to evaluate and choose the right process steps to best achieve their goal. Against this background, we develop a taxonomy for ICO processes. In contrast to previous work, this classification scheme focuses exclusively on the processual nature of ICOs and its underlying mechanisms.

Design Science Approach.
