Abstract Background The aim of this study was to compare the influence of two novel reciprocating movements on the cyclic fatigue resistance of endodontic reciprocating files. Methods 30 Procodile® (Komet Medical, Lemgo, Germany) files were selected in this study and distributed according to the following study groups depending on the movements to be performed: ReFlex Dynamic (n = 10), ReFlex Smart (n = 10) and Reciproc (n = 10) reciprocating movement. These files were fixed to a specific dynamic cyclic fatigue device designed and manufactured by 3D impression to simulate the pecking motion performed by the operator. The time to failure and the number of cycles of in-and-out of the endodontic files was registered. The results were analyzed by ANOVA and Weibull statistics. Abstract The applications of lightweight planar parallel robotic manipulators are increasing enormously because of its various desirable characteristics such as low weight, lower inertia and higher stiffness. Higher accelerations and accuracies can be achieved in planar parallel manipulators. Also, shape memory alloy restoration technique (SMART)-based linear actuators are replacing huge and bulky linear actuators. This study presents the kinematic design of smart linearly actuated family of U-shape base planar parallel robotic manipulator. With the aid of solid modelling software, different available configurations were modelled and their workspace was analysed. The developed 3-DOF motion stages (18 unique configurations) were fabricated using fused deposition modelling process, and the top three configurations having higher workspace were further experimented. It is interesting to observe that the actual or experimental workspace of a particular manipulator configuration is further minimised from the predicted or feasible workspace. It is due to the presence of passive links, singularities, friction between the parts, heat dissipation, force distribution, stiffness, etc. The present study depicts the experimental workspace of the top three configurations, namely PPR-PRP-PRR, PRP-PPR-PRP and PRP-PPR-PRR. Since none of the experimental workspace observed is equal or higher than the model workspace, an efficiency loss in terms of workspace reduction was calculated to understand the acceptability of the configurations in different domains. Apart from the loss, the result disclosed that the actual workspace of all the manipulators was within the feasible workspace domain of mobile platform. The PPR-PRP-PRR manipulator was found to possess highest experimental workspace than other configurations. The present study develops a hybrid total life and damage-tolerant fatigue methodology for the determination of a small crack growth threshold in Nitinol. Axial tension–tension/Mode I fatigue testing was performed on superelastic Nitinol wire specimens with starter cracks milled into the specimens using focused ion beam (FIB). Fatigue testing was performed in displacement control at various strain amplitudes, typical for Nitinol fatigue characterization given its superelastic behavior. The simplistic geometry of the test specimen and axial loading conditions also allowed for the calculation of stress amplitude and initial stress intensity factor range. A logistic regression analysis was used to determine strain/stress-based fatigue limits. The small crack growth threshold for superelastic Nitinol was obtained for the first time from physically small cracks with sizes comparable to native inclusions. Lastly, a fractographic analysis was performed to examine crack initiation and propagation from the FIB-milled starter cracks and to identify relevant fractographic features. While the proposed methodology is centered around the use case of Nitinol medical devices, it could be adapted for other materials and applications where small crack initiation and propagation play an important role in fatigue lifetime prediction. Population explosion, industrialization, and urbanization have accelerated energy requirements across the globe. This has led to the human quest to find simple and cost-effective energy solutions. A promising solution is the revival of the Stirling engine with the addition of Shape Memory Alloy NiTiNOL in it. The experimental results reveal that the addition of a NiTiNOL spring at the base plate of the Stirling engine enhances the overall efficiency of the engine, demonstrating some impact of the shape memory alloy toward the performance output of the Stirling engine. The newly modified engine has been named the STIRNOL ENGINE. The comparative study of Stirling and Stirnol engines reveals a minuscule efficiency improvement, yet there is a furtherance that opens a window for future researchers to get a lead and venture into this new field. We are confident that with more complex designs and better Stirling and NiTiNOL combinations, more efficient engines can be invented in the future. This research focuses on changing the material of the base plate of the Stirnol engine and ascertaining its performance differential through the integration of the NiTiNOL spring. A minimum of four types of materials are utilized for experimentation.

Background: To evaluate the cyclic fatigue resistance of rotary endodontic nickel-titanium instruments using both experimental and finite element methods. Methodology: Four different proprietary rotary endodontic instruments (PTG, PTU, VB, and TRN) were subjected to cyclic fatigue tests through a custom-built fixture (n = 30 for each group) and tested until failure according to the manufacturer’s recommended settings, and the number of cycles to failure (NCF) was measured. Separated fragments were measured to determine the location of the fracture event. Finite element modeling replicated this experiment in silico via a two-step method, modeling the dynamic motion via an initial insertion step, then followed by rotation. Results: TRN showed the highest NCF (2027.94 ± 452.50) with the lowest values for strain (4.49% ± 0.23%) and fragment lengths (3.26 mm ± 0.47 mm), whereas PTU showed the lowest NCF (600.90 ± 80.86) and highest values for strain (6.29% ± 0.47%) and fragment lengths (5.36 mm ± 0.79 mm). All instruments showed an increase in von Mises and maximum principal stress during the insertion step but showed no changes to the maximum stress values during the rotational step. Conclusions: The finite element analysis approach used provided useful insights into the stress evolution and stress distribution of instruments during cyclic fatigue but lacked the ability with existing inputs to predict failure from cyclic fatigue.

Lung implantable devices have been widely adopted as mechanical interventions for a wide variety of pulmonary pathologies. Despite successful initial treatment, long-term efficacy can often be impacted by fibrotic or granulation tissue formation at the implant sites. This study aimed to explore the lung-device interface by identifying the adhered proteome on lung devices explanted from patients with severe emphysema. In this study, scanning electron microscopy is used to visualize the adhesion of cells and proteins to silicone and nitinol surfaces of explanted endobronchial valves. By applying high-resolution mass-spectrometry, the surface proteome of eight explanted valves is characterized, identifying 263 unique protein species to be mutually adsorbed on the valves. This subset is subjected to gene enrichment analysis, matched with known databases and further validated using immunohistochemistry. Enrichment analyses reveal dominant clusters of functionally-related ontology terms associated with coagulation, pattern recognition receptor signaling, immune responses, cytoskeleton organization, cell adhesion and migration. Matching results show that extracellular matrix proteins and damage-associated molecular patterns are cardinal in the formation of the surface proteome. This is the first study investigating the composition of the adhered proteome on explanted lung devices, setting the groundwork for hypothesis generation and further exploration. Intelligent materials, especially materials with shape memory, are an important discovery, with technical applications in the medical and aerospace field, among others, which led to the development of systems and applications with multiple advantages and disadvantages due to ignorance about their functionality. This paper presents an application developed in the research laboratory for determining and monitoring the behavior of a material element with Ni-Ti shape memory, and its lifespan. The application allows the stress level of the Ni-Ti element subjected to numerous repeated cycles of deformation to be determined by supplying it to a constant electric current. Thus, the results show the variation of the Ni-Ti element force, in the form of a spring, at the ambient temperature variations as well as force variations at different numbers of attempts. The Ni-Ti alloy has both shape retention and superelasticity properties, being the most common in the fields of applicability. Shape memory alloy (SMA), a distinctive class of material, can possess its preceding form when subjected to definite thermo-mechanical energy. Nitinol, an SMA, having an admirable shape memory effect, super elastic, and biomechanical properties, has developed a vast application in the field of biomedical, automobile, robotics, aerospace, etc. Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) technique is employed for machining of electrically conductive materials like SMAs, high tech ceramics, smart materials, etc. This paper is focused on analyzing the effect of different significant input parameters on the vital machinability aspects of SMA nitinol during WEDM. Independent input variables like pulse-on time ( T ON ) , discharge current (I) , wire-speed (WS), wire tension (WT) and flushing pressure (FP) were considered to find out their influence on the kerf width (KW), material removal rate (MRR), arithmetic mean roughness ( R a) , and microhardness (μ h). 3D optical profile, X-ray diffraction analysis, and scanning electron microscopy were also executed on the WEDMed surface to inspect the surface, microstructure, and phase changes in the machined surface. The role of damage in the degradation of tensile properties related to a stress-induced martensite transformation in a hydrogen-charged Ni–Ti superelastic alloy has been investigated. By damage, we mean vacancy clusters and dislocation structures induced in advance by a dynamic interplay between hydrogen and the martensite transformation. To homogenise the hydrogen concentration, the specimen was aged at room temperature after charging with a small amount of hydrogen (approximately 30 mass ppm). In this case, no fracture occurs within 2000 cycles during a cyclic tensile deformation test in the stress plateau region generated by stress-induced martensite and reverse transformations. With this hydrogen concentration, cyclic interplay between hydrogen and the martensite transformation scarcely leads to the degradation of tensile properties. Nevertheless, following cyclic martensite transformations before aging that induces pre-damage, fracture occurs after around 1000 cycles under a cyclic tensile deformation test despite the hydrogen concentration being the same. The present results clearly indicate that pre-damage induced by hydrogen affects the subsequent transformations, thereby causing the self-multiplication of damage, which degrades the tensile properties. Purpose: This paper presents a design and implementation of a shape memory alloy actuated electromechanical oscillator. This is a non-magnetic high-deflection electromechanical oscillator, which is based on the concept of electro-thermo-mechanical actuation. The system can be used to produce an electromechanical oscillation of low-frequency and high-deflection with high-block force. Methods: A prototype of the oscillator is developed using an elastic carbon-steel spring, a NiTiNol actuator, which serves as an SMA actuator, a rack and pinion gear assembly and an electronic logic circuit. The whole assembly functios in a closed loop with negative feedback. Results: The developed prototype can produce a reciprocating rectilinear peak-to-peak mean deflection of 6 mm and reciprocating curvilinear peak-to-peak mean deflection of 19$^o$ at around 35 mHz frequency with 0.9 % mean duty cycle. The device is tested using a 12.4 V DC power supply at room temperature. Since, the mean duty cycle is extremely low, which is around 0.9 % for the developed prototype, hence, the power consumption of this system per cycle is considerably low around 0.4 W/cycle. Conclusion: The Joule heating is the base of the proposed approach. Hence, the proposed system offers an advantage of getting operated by both DC/AC supply.The electromechanical motion, which is generated by the developed soft-actuator assembly, can be used in applications such as robotics and mechatronics. The developed mechanism can also be used to hold things very fast and place them slowly. The same mechanism can also be used to produce flapping motion with large block force, or hammering action with high impact force at low frequency. The proposed system, can also be used in slowly repetitive or non-repetitive (through customization) electro-mechanical lever-releasing mechanisms for fluid-valve on-off operation and jumping, throwing and triggering executions. Elastocaloric cooling is regarded as one of the most promising cutting-edge alternatives to conventional vapor compression refrigeration systems. This technology is based on the temperature change of materials when being subjected to uniaxial stress, which has been observed in polymers, alloys, and ceramics. However, the existing elastocaloric prototypes have a bottleneck problem of an excessive mass ratio between the actuator and the solid-state refrigerant. To overcome this challenge, this study proposes an elastocaloric refrigerator using a single actuator with an inclined angle to produce a vertical tensile force to nickel-titanium (NiTi) shape-memory wires and a lateral motion to translate the NiTi wires between the hot and cold sides. The refrigerator can achieve a 90% improvement in the mass ratio between the solid-state refrigerant and actuator compared to the currently best-reported elastocaloric cooling prototype. The NiTi wires exhibit an adiabatic temperature change of 6.6 K during unloading at the strain of 4.8%. The proposed refrigerator can achieve a 9.2-K temperature span when the heat source and sink are insulated from ambient and has a cooling power up to 3.1 W under zero-temperature-span condition. By using thinner NiTi wires or NiTi plates, the developed elastocaloric refrigerator could be a starting point to promote applications of this technology in the future.

Current approaches to reducing restenosis do not balance the reduction of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation with the increase in the healing of the endothelium. Building on our previous work, we present our study on the effects of Nitinol-based nanotubular coatings with different nanotube diameters on the reduction of restenosis. Here, we demonstrate that the nanotubular coatings reduced primary human aortic smooth muscle cell (HASMC) proliferation and increased the migration (by more than 4 times), collagen (by 2-3 times per cell) and elastin (by 5-8 times per cell) production of primary human aortic endothelial cells (HAEC). Furthermore, a significant increase in elastin and soluble collagen production of HAEC was observed with an increase in nanotube diameter. Our findings suggest that nanotubes-coated Nitinol may provide a surface conducive for HAEC reendothelialization while reducing the proliferation of HASMC.

Background: Demographic change is leading to an increase in the number of osteoporotic patients, so a rethink is required in implantology in order to be able to guarantee adequate anchoring stability in the bone. The functional modification of conventional standard screw implants using superelastic, structured Ti6Al4V anchoring elements promises great potential for increasing anchoring stability.Methods: For this purpose, conventional screw implants were mechanically machined and extended so that structured-superelastic-positionable-Ti6Al4V anchoring elements could be used. The novel implants were investigated with three tests. The setup of the anchoring elements was investigated in CT studies in an artificial bone. In a subsequent simplified handling test, the handling of the functional samples was evaluated under surgical conditions. The anchorage stability compared to standard screw implants was investigated in a final pullout test according to ASTM F543-the international for the standard specification and test methods for metallic medical bone screws.Results: The functionalization of conventional screw implants with structured superelastic Ti6Al4V anchoring elements is technically realizable. It was demonstrated that the anchoring elements can be set up in the artificial bone without any problems. The anchorage mechanism is easy to handle under operating conditions. The first simplified handling test showed that at the current point of the investigations, the anchoring elements have no negative influence on the surgical procedure (especially under the focus of screw implantation). Compared to conventional standard screws, more mechanical work is required to remove the functional patterns completely from the bone.Conclusion: In summary, it was shown that conventional standard screw implants can be functionalized with Ti6Al4V-structured NiTi anchoring elements and the new type of screws are suitable for orthopedic and neurosurgical use. This paper exemplifies the feasibility of expanding a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method to select optimum process parameters during the wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) of nitinol. The application potential of combined desirability function analysis (DFA) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) has been reported. Nitinol, a shape memory alloy (SMA), can memorize or retain its original shape when subjected to thermo-mechanical or magnetic loads. Four key input variables, like pulse on time ( T ON ) , pulse off time ( T OFF ) , wire tension (WT), and wire feed (WF) have been studied to optimize three correlated responses, like kerf width, material removal rate (MRR), and surface roughness ( R a). Process parameter permutations T ON = 1 2 0 μ s, T OFF = 5 5 μ s, WT = 8 kg-F and WF = 3 m/min were found to yield the optimum results. For the desired kerf width, MRR and R a , the optimum process parameters were also achieved expending Taguchi's signal-to-noise ratio. Validation results affirmed that the MCDM approach, AHP–DFA is a proficient strategy to select optimal input parameters for a preferred output eminence for WEDM of nitinol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NiTinol Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are becoming one of the ideal choices for biomedical industries due to their unique properties such as Shape Memory Effect (SME), Super Elasticity (SE) and Biocompatibility. In the process of making complicated biomedical implants, welding processes play a vital role. In this work, an attempt was made to study the effect of heat input and Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) on the TIG-welded NiTinol SMA. TIG welding was carried out on 1-mm thick NiTinol sheets. With increase in heat input, there was a significant variation in Phase Transformation Temperature (PTT) of welded samples. The variation in PTT is attributed to the formation of intermetallic phases such as Ti2Ni, Ni3Ti and NiTiO3 and coarse grain formation. Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) analysis on the weld revealed that the average grain size of parent material was increased from 9.92851 μ m to 48.292345 μ m after the welding process. The PWHT was carried out on the best weld characteristic sample. PWHT did not produce significant effect on PTT. Austenite start and finish temperature slightly decreased after PWHT, whereas slight drift towards the positive side was noticed in martensite start and finish temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Machining of Nitinol alloy is complicated by the traditional process due to severe strain hardening and low thermal conductivity, which prompts high tool wear and indigent surface quality. Wire Electro Discharge Machining (WEDM) has been most commonly used for machining Nitinol alloy. In this paper, the effect of input attributes such as pulse on time (Ton), pulse off time (Toff), peak current (Ipeak) and voltage (V) on metal removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (SR) during WEDM of Nitinol alloy have been investigated. Experiments were conducted according to central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for studying the effect of input attributes and their interactions. It is perceived that at smaller values, Ton and Ipeak are more significant attributes for improving the MRR and surface finish. The optimum conditions are obtained for minimising surface roughness and maximising MRR using RSM and Desirability analysis. Confirmation test was conducted with optimum input attributes where the estimated values of the output attributes were contrasted with the experimental results. Nitinol is widely used in the production of medical devices, especially the ones that are designed for minimally invasive treatment, such as stents to restore vascular patency, stent grafts to eliminate aneurysms, and cava filters to trap blood clots. One of the most important characteristics that determines the reliability of the functioning of such products in the human body is the state of the surface layer. The higher the surface quality, the less negative impact is on the circulatory system, the walls of blood vessels and the higher the biological compatibility of the product. Electrochemical polishing methods are mainly used to improve the surface quality of nitinol products. The disadvantage of the applied electrochemical methods is the need to use aggressive electrolytes that contain toxic components, such as hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, perchloric acid, nitric acid, methanol. As an alternative to the existing methods of electrochemical polishing, we have developed electrolytic-plasma polishing (EPP), a new highly efficient process for improving the surface quality of nitinol products. The most important advantage of the method over traditional electrochemical polishing is the use of aqueous salt solutions with a concentration of 4 % as electrolytes. Based on the results of the studies performed, the most rational EPP mode was established, the use of which during polishing of nitinol provides surface cleaning from scale, polishing with a decrease in the roughness parameter Ra by 0.344 μm and an increase in pitting potential by 33 %. Featured Application: Variable Area Nozzle integrated into the design of a high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine. A variable area nozzle integrated into the design of a high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine effectively saves up to 10% in aircraft fuel consumption. Additionally, noise emissions can be lowered at airports during take-off and landing by having better control of the nozzle diameter. Shape memory capabilities of Nitinol alloys could be availed in the form of actuators in the construction of such a nozzle. However, these Nitinol actuators must be joined to Ti-6Al-4V, a prominent alloy making up most of the rest of the nozzle. Because of the huge differences in the physical and metallurgical properties of these alloys, fusion welding is not as effective as solid-state welding. In the current study, a linear friction welding process was adopted to join Ti-6Al-4V to Nitinol successfully. The effect of friction welding on the evolution of weld macro and microstructures; hardness and tensile properties were studied and discussed. The macrostructure of Ti-6Al-4V and Nitinol's dissimilar joint revealed flash formation mainly on the Ti-6Al-4V side due to its reduced flow strength at high temperatures. Optical microstructures revealed fine grains in Ti-6Al-4V immediately adjacent to the interface due to dynamic recrystallisation and strain hardening effects. In contrast, Nitinol remained mostly unaffected. An intermetallic compound (Ti2Ni) was seen to have formed at the interface due to the extreme rubbing action, and these adversely influenced the tensile strength and elongation values of the joints. In the last few years, new technologies have been developed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in order to offer valid surgical alternatives to transurethral resection of the prostate with lower complications and hospitalization while maintaining satisfactory functional results. Among these new approaches, transurethral implantation of first- and second-generation temporary implantable nitinol device (TIND and iTIND, respectively) (Medi-Tate©R; Medi-Tate Ltd., Or Akiva, Israel) has been proposed. The aim of this work is to describe the surgical technique and to perform a systematic review of the available literature on follow-up of functional outcomes. A systematic research of the available literature on this topic was performed via Medline, Embase, and Cochrane databases in April 2021. Current evidence regarding the implantation of iTIND to treat BPH-related lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) is still limited. Seven studies have been found. Only one randomized controlled trial has been published reporting short-term follow-up of implantation of iTIND versus sham procedure. All the studies reported that both procedures are safe, effective, and well-tolerated. Moreover, such treatment seems to not affect patient's sexual and ejaculatory functions. In conclusions, current clinical evidence suggests that temporary implantation of iTIND is a valid option for the minimally invasive surgical treatment of BPH-related LUTS. Featured Application: The vibration isolations of precision processing equipment, measuring instruments and spacecraft payloads are potential applications of the work. Vibration isolators with both stiffness and damping nonlinearities show promise for exhibiting compound advantages for broadband vibration isolation. A nonlinear isolator with a NiTiNOL wire rope is proposed with cubic stiffness, hysteretic damping, and pinching effects induced by geometric constraints, inner frictions, and phase transitions, respectively. A combined method of a beam constraint model and a Bouc-Wen model is presented to characterize the restoring force of the NiTiNOL wire rope. The frequency responses of the nonlinear isolator were analyzed through a harmonic balance method with an alternating frequency/time domain technique. The generalized equivalent stiffness and the generalized equivalent damping ratio were defined for a comprehensive understanding of the nonlinear characteristics. The isolator exhibited a stiffness-softening-hardening characteristic. The pinching effect, the Bouc-Wen hysteresis, and the cubic stiffness mainly influenced the equivalent stiffness at the initial value, the small displacements, and the large displacements, respectively. The rate-independent damping ratio increased and then decreased with increasing displacement, and the parameters influenced the damping ratio change in different ways. Compared to an isolator with a steel wire rope, the isolator with a NiTiNOL wire rope exhibited less initial stiffness and a stronger damping effect, and thus, better vibration isolation performance. The relationships of the peak displacement transmissibility and the resonant frequency with the excitation amplitude were both non-monotonic due to the non-monotonic changes of the stiffness and the damping ratio. The minimum peak transmissibility, the lowest resonant frequency, and their corresponding excitation amplitudes depended on the isolator parameters. Purpose To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the newly designed open-cell type self-expandable nitinol stent (NiTi-stent) for peripheral arteries. Materials and Methods Twenty-eight limbs of 14 minipigs were randomly assigned to the NiTistent group or conventional nitinol stent group. Stents were symmetrically implanted into the iliac arteries of each animal using carotid artery approach and were observed for 1 month (n = 5) and 6 months (n = 9). The angiographic lumen diameter (ALD), late lumen loss, angiographic stenosis, histomorphometric lumen area, neointimal area, and area stenosis were analyzed and compared between the groups. Results Stent migration, stent fracture, or thrombus formation were not observed in either group. At the 1-month follow-up, the neointimal area (p = 0.008) and area stenosis (p = 0.016) were significantly smaller in the NiTi-stent group than in the control group. At the 6-months followup, the NiTi-stent group showed significantly larger ALD (p = 0.014), less late lumen loss (p = 0.019), less angiographic stenosis (p = 0.014), larger lumen area (p = 0.040), and smaller neointimal area and area stenosis (p = 0.004 and p = 0.014, respectively) compared with the control group. Conclusion The NiTi-stent is as safe and effective as the conventional nitinol stent and induces less neointimal hyperplasia in a minipig iliac artery model.

Objective: to investigate dependence of the mechanical properties of mitral annuloplasty rings on heat annealing modes. Materials and methods. The study evaluates the nature of change in stress–strain curves under uniaxial compression of experimental samples processed at varying annealing temperature, duration and pressure. Results. It was noted that higher exposure, temperature, and lower pressure led to increased structural rigidity and strength for small strains. Moreover, the extent of influence of annealing temperature and duration was comparable. A 40% (500–700 °C) change in temperature altered the mechanical properties of the ring – 20% increase in strength. A similar change in heat treatment time (4.5–6.5 min) resulted in a 27% increase in the force required for a 15% compression. Conclusion. The experimental dependences presented in the work allow recommending main parameters for heat treatment mode: temperature range 600–700 °C, 10.5 minutes exposure time, and 0.1–0.5 atm air pressure in the furnace chamber.

This paper introduces the kinematics and two motion planning schemes for a planar, hyper-elastic leaf-spring that is fully supported at the proximal end. The path of the leaf-spring's free-end depends on its zero-energy configuration and loaded initial configuration. These two configurations need to be determined such that the free-end's actual path will go through a desired path, which we define as a set of planar points. Our solutions minimize a weight function which compares the actual and desired paths. We show how our mathematical model fits the behavior of a shape memory alloy Nitinol wire under uniform heating and simulate our motion planning schemes. Finally, we calculate the shape of a real shape memory alloy wire so its free-end's path will follow a straight line.

Purpose In this study, we developed a novel nitinol-actuated surgical instrument to conduct laparoscopic renal denervation for the treatment of resistant hypertension. We investigated whether shape and temperature settings of nitinol specimens fit well into the design goals. Furthermore, we conducted a pilot study to validate the mechanical and physiological performance of nerve ablation without damaging the renal artery. Method Tensile tests were performed to observe temperature-dependent thermomechanical properties and the original shape of nitinol specimens was set considering our design goal. We performed strain gage experiments to measure bending strain. We developed surgical instrument and operated laparoscopic renal denervation in a swine model. Subsequent impedance spectroscopy experiments were conducted to measure changes in impedance magnitudes during the operation and histological analyses were performed to visualize thermogenic damage to arteries and nerves. Results Tensile testing showed that the shape memory effect begins above 37 °C. Measured strains on nitinol surfaces were 2.10% ± 0.769%, below the strain limit of 8%. Impedance spectroscopy experiments showed decreases in magnitude in all six trials. After operation of laparoscopic renal denervation following the protocol, renal arteries and nerves were harvested and thermogenic damage was observed in nerves but not arteries. Conclusion We developed a novel nitinol-actuated surgical instrument with which to perform laparoscopic renal denervation. The feasibility of our device was verified using thermomechanical analyses of nitinol, and assessments of mechanical and physiological performance. Our device could be used in other laparoscopic procedures that require large degrees of freedom while restricting to trocar size.

Nitinol shape memory alloy (SMA) is a tough material to machine because it is difficult to cut. The results of the current research work demonstrate how two different electrolytes affect the electrochemical behavior in relation to electrochemical machining performance of nitinol. Potentiodynamic polarisation (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests have been conducted using 0.1 M H _2 SO _4 and mixed 0.1 M H _2 SO _4 + 0.1 M citric acid electrolyte. Further, the experimental investigation on the machining characteristics of nitinol during wire electrochemical machining (WECM) has been conducted. It is revealed that the grooves width and depth increase with increase in applied pulse voltage and surface roughness increase with increase in groove depth. The minimum width overcut of machined groove was 18.10 μ m in 0.1 M H _2 SO _4 + 0.1 M citric acid at 5 V pulse voltage which is less compared to width overcut of 24.85 μ m produced in 0.1 M H _2 SO _4 electrolyte for same parametric machining condition. This specific mixed electrolyte produced average surface roughness (Ra) of 0.0631 μ m at 5 V which is lower compared to 0.09055 μ m produced using 0.1 M H _2 SO _4 electrolyte. The fabrication of homogeneous average slit width of 92.234 μ m using citric acid mixed H _2 SO _4 electrolyte with minimum average surface roughness (Ra) of 0.0691 μ m shows the capability of WECM.

Understanding the martensitic microstructure in nickel–titanium (NiTi) thin films helps to optimize their properties for applications in microsystems. Epitaxial and single-crystalline films can serve as model systems to understand the microstructure, as well as to exploit the anisotropic mechanical properties of NiTi. Here, we analyze the growth of NiTi on single-crystalline MgO(100) and Al _2 O _3 (0001) substrates and optimize film and buffer deposition conditions to achieve epitaxial films in (100)- and (111)-orientation. On MgO(100), we compare the transformation behavior and crystal quality of (100)-oriented NiTi films on different buffer layers. We demonstrate that a vanadium buffer layer helps to decrease the low-angle grain boundary density in the NiTi film, which inhibits undesired growth twins and leads to higher transformation temperatures. On Al _2 O _3 (0001), we analyze the orientation of a chromium buffer layer and find that it grows (111)-oriented only in a narrow temperature range around 500 ^∘ C. By depositing the Cr buffer below the NiTi film, we can prepare (111)-oriented, epitaxial films with transformation temperatures above room temperature. Transmission electron microscopy confirms a martensitic microstructure with Guinier Preston-zone precipitates at room temperature. We identify the deposition conditions to approach the ideal single crystalline state, which is beneficial for the analysis of the martensitic microstructure and anisotropic mechanical properties in different film orientations.

This investigation is concerned with the mechanical behavior of Shape Memory Alloy Hybrid Composite Beams (SMAHC), that consist of a circular bar of NiTi alloy incorporated in a 500 mm long cylindrical pipe of polypropylene (PP), with external diameter 50 mm and nominal wall thickness 7 mm, wound with a nylon/epoxy layer. The Ni-Ti alloy was characterized using: scanning electron microscopy (SEM); X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Differential thermal analysis (DSC). The nominal chemical composition of the alloy is 50.05 %Ni / 49.95%Ti, and the softer martensite is the predominant phase at room temperature. The approximate martensite (M) to Austenitic (A) phase transformation temperatures were Mstart = 32°C, Mfinal = 46°C, Astart = 38 °C and Afinal = 60°C. For temperature TAfinal it is fully converted in the Austenitic phase; and its elasticity modulus increases by a factor up to three times. This significant change in stiffness of Ni-Ti, without changing its mass, has motivated the application of such alloy in machine vibration control. The SMAHC beams were subjected to static three-point bending tests, in the elastic regime. Experimental results showed that, in average, at 21°C, the PP pipes effective flexural elastic modulus increased 112%, from 757 MPa to 1609 MPa, when the Ni-Ti bar and the external layer of nylon/epoxy were incorporated to the PP pipe, creating a smart beam. These last results indicate that the SMAHC beam can work as an adaptative structure.

Nitinol (NiTi) alloy is a widely used material for the production of orthodontic archwires. Its corrosion behavior in conditions that exist in the oral cavity still remains a great characterization challenge. The motivation behind this work is to reveal the influence of commercially available mouthwashes on NiTi orthodontic archwires by performing non-electrochemical corrosion tests and quantifying the changes in the nanotopography of commercially available NiTi orthodontic wires. In this study, we examined the behavior of NiTi alloy archwires exposed for 21.5 days to different corrosive media: artificial saliva, Eludril®, Aquafresh®, and Listerine®. The corrosion was characterized by contact mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) before and after the corrosion tests. A novel analysis methodology was developed to obtain insight into locations of material gain or material loss based on standard surface roughness parameters Sa, Sdr, Ssk, and S10z. The developed methodology revealed that fluoride-containing mouthwashes (Aquafresh® and Listerine®) dominantly cause material loss, while chloride-containing mouthwash (Eludril®) can cause both material loss and material gain. The sample exposed to artificial saliva did not display significant changes in any parameter.

Suction grippers offer a distinct advantage in their ability to handle a wide range of items. However, attaching these grippers to irregular and rough surfaces presents an ongoing challenge. To address this obstacle, this study explores the integration of magnetic intelligence into a soft suction gripper design, enabling fast external magnetic actuation of the attachment process. Additionally, miniaturization options are enhanced by implementing a compliant deploying mechanism. The resulting design is the first-of-its-kind magnetically-actuated deployable suction gripper featuring a thin magnetic membrane (Ø 50 mm) composed of carbonyl iron particles embedded in a silicone matrix. This membrane is supported by a frame made of superelastic nitinol wires that facilitate deployment. During experiments, the proof-of-principle prototype demonstrates successful attachment on a diverse range of curved surfaces in both dry and wet environments. The gripper achieves attachment on curved surfaces with radii of 50-75 mm, exerting a maximum attachment force of 2.89 ± 0.54 N. The current gripper design achieves a folding percentage of 75%, enabling it to fit into a Ø 12.5 mm tube and access hard-to-reach areas while maintaining sufficient surface area for attachment forces. The proposed prototype serves as a foundational steppingstone for further research in the development of reliable and effective magnetically-actuated suction grippers across various configurations. By addressing the limitations of attachment to irregular surfaces and exploring possibilities for miniaturization and precise control, this study opens new avenues for the practical application of suction grippers in diverse industries and scenarios.

The spinal hybrid elastic (SHE) rod is a semi-rigid pedicle screw-based rod for spinal dynamic stabilization. This study investigated the biomechanical effects of different ratios of SHE rod using finite element analysis (FEA). A three-dimensional nonlinear FEA of an intact lumbar spine model (INT) was constructed. The SHE rod was composed of an inner nitinol stick (NS) and an outer polycarbonate urethane shell (PS). Four groups implanted at L3–L4 had the same outer diameter (5.5 mm) but different NS diameter/PS thickness ratios: Nt45, Nt35, Nt25, and Nt15. The resultant intervertebral range of motion (ROM), disc stress, facet joint contact force, screw stress, NS stress, and PCU stress were analyzed. The results indicated that ROM, disc stress, and facet force decreased moderately in the implanted L3–L4 levels and increased slightly in the adjacent L2–L3 levels. The NS stress and NS diameter trended towards inverse proportionality. Changing the ratio did not markedly influence screw or PS stress. The SHE rod system with elastic NS and insulated PS has a 5.5 mm diameter for universal pedicle screws. The SHE rod system provides sufficient spinal support and increases gentle adjacent segment stress. Considering the durability, the optimal NS diameter/PS thickness ratio of the SHE rod system is 3.5/2.0 mm.

The challenges facing metallic implants for reconstructive surgery include the leaching of toxic metal ions, a mismatch in elastic modulus between the implant and the treated tissue, and the risk of infection. These problems can be addressed by passivating the metal surface with an organic substrate and incorporating antibiotic molecules. Nitinol (NiTi), a nickel-titanium alloy, is used in devices for biomedical applications due to its shape memory and superelasticity. However, unmodified NiTi carries a risk of localized nickel toxicity and inadequately supports angiogenesis or neuroregeneration due to limited cell adhesion, poor biomineralization, and little antibacterial activity. To address these challenges, NiTi nanoparticles were modified using self-assembled phosphonic acid monolayers and functionalized with the antibiotics ceftriaxone and vancomycin via the formation of an amide. Surface modifications were monitored to confirm that phosphonic acid modifications were present on NiTi nanoparticles and 100% of the samples formed ordered films. Modifications were stable for more than a year. Elemental composition showed the presence of nickel, titanium, and phosphorus (1.9% for each sample) after surface modifications. Dynamic light scattering analysis suggested some agglomeration in solution. However, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed a particle size distribution of <100 nm, the even distribution of nanoparticles on coverslips, and elemental composition before and after cell culture. B35 neuroblastoma cells exhibited no inhibition of survival and extended neurites of approximately 100 μm in total length when cultured on coverslips coated with only poly-l-lysine or with phosphonic acid-modified NiTi, indicating high biocompatibility. The ability to support neural cell growth and differentiation makes modified NiTi nanoparticles a promising coating for surfaces in metallic bone and nerve implants. NiTi nanoparticles functionalized with ceftriaxone inhibited Escherichia coli and Serratia marcescens (SM6) at doses of 375 and 750 μg whereas the growth of Bacillus subtilis was inhibited by a dose of only 37.5 μg. NiTi-vancomycin was effective against B. subtilis at all doses even after mammalian cell culture. Background: Cardiovascular implantable devices, such as vascular stents, are critical for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, their success is dependent on robust and often long-term antithrombotic therapies. Yet, the current standard-of-care therapies often pose significant bleeding risks to patients. Coagulation factor (F)XI and FXII have emerged as potentially safe and efficacious targets to safely reduce pathologic thrombin generation in medical devices., Objectives: To study the efficacy of monoclonal antibody-targeting FXII and FXI of the contact pathway in preventing vascular device-related thrombosis., Methods: The effects of inhibition of FXII and FXI using function-blocking monoclonal antibodies were examined in a nonhuman primate model of nitinol stent-related thrombosis under arterial and venous flow conditions., Results: We found that function-blocking antibodies of FXII and FXI reduced markers of stent-induced thrombosis in vitro and ex vivo. Objective: To statistically analyse the hearing thresholds of two cohorts undergoing stapedotomy for otosclerosis with two different prostheses. Method: A retrospective study was conducted comparing NiTiBOND (n = 53) and Nitinol (n = 38) prostheses. Results: Average follow-up duration was 4.1 years for NiTiBOND and 4.4 years for Nitinol prostheses. The post-operative air–bone gap was 10 dB or less, indicating clinical success. The p-values for differences between (1) pre- and post-operative values in the NiTiBOND group, (2) pre- and post-operative values in the Nitinol group, (3) pre-operative values and (4) post-operative values in the two groups were: air–bone gap – p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.631 and p = 0.647; four-frequency bone conduction threshold – p = 0.076, p = 0.129, p < 0.001 and p = 0.005; four-frequency air conduction threshold – p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.043 and p = 0.041; three-frequency (1, 2 and 4 kHz) bone conduction threshold pre-operatively – p = 0.639, p = 0.495, p = 0.001 and p = 0.01; and air conduction threshold at 4 kHz: – p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.03 and p = 0.058. Biocompatibility is an important factor for metallic medical device implants, and corrosion resistance of implantable alloys is one aspect of biocompatibility. Corrosion behavior of nitinol is strongly dependent upon the nature of the surface oxide, which forms during processing. The surface oxide is comprised of a mixture of titanium and nickel oxides, and subsequent thermal exposure (e.g., during shape setting) and surface removal (e.g., electropolishing, mechanical polishing, etching, etc.) influence its structure. Corrosion behavior is often assessed through testing methods such as cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (e.g., ASTM F2129) and nickel ion release. Studies have suggested that a correlation exists between oxide thickness and nickel ion release, with thicker oxides eluting more nickel. It is hypothesized that the composition of the surface oxide, and not only its thickness, influences the corrosion performance of nitinol. To investigate this, nitinol wire samples were processed to produce surface oxides with different structures both in terms of thickness and composition. Nitinol is an excellent candidate material for developing various self-expanding endovascular devices due to its unique properties such as superelasticity, biocompatibility and shape memory effect. A low-energy laser joining technique suggests a high potential to create various large diameter Nitinol endovascular devices that contain complex geometries. The primary purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of laser joining process parameters with regard to the mechanical and biocompatible performance of Nitinol stents. Both the chemical composition and the microstructure of the laser-welded joints were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). In vitro study results on cytotoxicity demonstrated that the joining condition of 8 Hz frequency and 1 kW laser power showed the highest degree of endothelial cell viability after thermal annealing in 500°C for 30 min. Also, in vitro study results showed the highest oxygen content at 0.9 kW laser power, 8 Hz frequency, and 0.3 mm spot size after the thermal annealing. Mechanical performance test results showed that the optimal condition for the highest disconnecting force was found at 1 Hz frequency and 1 kW power with 0.6 mm spot size. Two new endovascular devices have been fabricated using the optimized laser joining parameters, which have demonstrated successful device delivery and retrieval, as well as acute biocompatibility. The histopathology slide seminar "Classic Examples in Toxicologic Pathology XXVII" was held on February 21 and 22, 2020, at the Department of Pathology at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany, with joint organization by the European Society of Toxicologic Pathology. The goal of this annual seminar is to present and discuss classical and actual cases of toxicologic pathology. This article summarizes the presentations given during the seminar, including images of representative lesions. Ten actual and classical cases of toxicologic pathology, mostly induced by a test article, were presented. These included small intestine pathology and transcriptomics induced by a γ-secretase modulator, liver findings in nonhuman primates induced by gene therapy, drug-induced neutropenia in dogs, device-induced growth plate lesions, polycystic lesions in CAR/PXR double knockout mice, inner ear lesions in transgenic mice, findings in Beagle dogs induced by an inhibitor of the myeloid leukemia cell differentiation protein MCL1, findings induced by a monovalent fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 antagonist, kidney lesions induced by a mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor in combination therapy, and findings in mutation-specific drugs. Development of countermeasure for corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement of Ni-Ti superelastic alloy in an acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) solution has been attempted by adding NaHCO3 and H2O2 to the solution. Upon addition of only 0.001 M NaHCO3 to a 0.2% APF solution, almost no changes in corrosion current density and corrosion potential are observed. With an increasing NaHCO3 concentration up to 0.01 M, the corrosion current density substantially decreases and the corrosion potential slightly shifts in the noble direction. The corrosion loss significantly decreases and hydrogen absorption is slightly inhibited. Upon the combined addition of 0.01 M NaHCO3 and 0.001 M H2O2, the corrosion current density is lowest and the corrosion potential shifts in the noble direction. The corrosion and hydrogen absorption are substantially inhibited. The present study clearly indicates that the combined addition is exceptionally effective as a simultaneous countermeasure for corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement of the alloy.
