The 1972 Microfilm Source Book has been designed to give sources of supply for important services and equipment related to microfilm. Events in the microfilm industry during 1971 are reviewed first, and a calendar is provided of major meetings and conferences held during 1972. The next section contains an index to products which lists them alphabetically by supplier under keywords. The listing includes the name of the supplier, the product identification or model number, and the general price range for the product. A brief list of custom equipment manufacturers and a guide to metrication precede an alphabetically arranged index to associations. Also included are a basic microfilm bibliography, a directory of trade names, a glossary of microfilm terms, an outline of 1971 microfilm stocks performance, a list of micropublishers, a COM bibliography, lists of COM service bureaus and services, a description of COM recorder characteristics, a directory of microfilm service bureaus, a guide to consultants, an index to sources, a list of storage centers, a brief employment agency index, and an advertiser's index. Selected from references processed into the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) data bank from January 1968 to July 1971, this bibliography contains 47 entries which update and cover the field of microfiche, microfilm, and related equipment. Entries are composed of NTIS resumes which provide complete bibliographic information in addition to a list of subject terms which describe the contents of the citation, and, in many cases, an abstract. Corporate author-monitoring agency, subject, title, contract number, and report number indexes are provided. (Author/SH)

A defense-wide study in cooperation with GSA to: evaluate the availability and applicability of advanced microform and equipment to the Federal Catalog System (FCS) and Defense Integrated Data System (DIDS) publications requirements; recommend a type of microform and compatible reader for standardization throughout the DOD; and develop a procurement specification for use in acquiring the DOD standard microform and retrieval equipment. The report reviews the development and current state of microform technology, applications within industry and government, and evaluates various forms and reduction ratios for cost effective application to the Federal Catalog System publications at a 48:1 reduction ratio and to procure compatible 48X readers. The report's recommendations have been approved by the ASD (I + L) for implementation. (Author)

An annual cumulative guide lists in alphabetical order, books, journals, and other materials which are available on microfilm and other microforms from United States publishers. This edition of the guide contains over 25,000 entries, each with full ordering information: author and title, name of the publisher, current price, and type of microform used. Lists of publishers in alphabetical order and with full addresses are also included. (SH)

Microforms may be utilized by the medical libraries established in each VA (Veterans Administration) hospital and domiciliary Microforms are used for housing and using books, journals, monographs, reports and other library materials which are unavailable except in microform or whose retention in hardcopy cannot be justified. The most common formats for microforms in libraries are 16 mm. and 35 mm. film in either open reels or cartridges and microfiche. The characteristics of each of these and other formats are detailed in Chapter 2. Microforms require the use of a reader which projects an enlarged microimage for viewing. The characteristics of readers and reader-printers are detailed in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 provides information and data needed to develop a plan for integration microform materials with library services. Chapter 5 consists of a list of selected readings, catalogs and guides. This is the 1973 version of the annual, cumulative guide to books, journals, and other materials which are available on microfilm and other microforms from Unites States publishers. Theses and dissertations are not listed. It is essentially a listing of microform publications offered for sale on a regular basis. The guide is in alphabetical order. Entries include publishers, authors (if applicable), and price. Publishers' addresses are included. (JK)

This glossary, which is in its fifth edition, aims to standardize the use and meaning of terms in the field of microphotography and microreproduction. It provides descriptive definitions of processes, equipment, acronyms, associations, material, units of measure, and trade names. Some terms are marked as "deprecated" in order to discourage their continued use. A table of standard metric system units which the National Micrographic Association recommends for use in the industry is appended. (JY)

Selected United States Government documents available on microfilm from University Microfilms are listed in this annotated catalog. Many of these documents were originally published by the U.S. Government Printing Office and issued to depository libraries across the country. Others were published by private printers and may not be considered part of the depository collection. The microfilmed documents are listed by type: administrative reports; statistical reports; committee or commission reports; reports of investigation and research; hearings before committees of Congress; documents, journals, and proceedings; laws; statutes, compilations, and codes; decisions and opinions; rules, regulations, and manuals; bibliographies and lists; general and descriptive information; and periodicals. A complete listing of the microfilmed hearings, committee prints, and reports of the 82nd through the 86th Congresses is presented. Each listing gives an ordering number and the price of microfilm and, when available, of hardcopy. (JY)

Over 5500 current and backfile titles of American, foreign, and Black community newspapers that may be purchased on 35mm. roll microfilm are indexed in this catalog. Historical annotations are provided for selected American, Asian, and other foreign newspapers as well as for collections which focus on areas of special interest: early America, the Civil War, Dow Jones publications, the Black community, underground newspapers, The Village Voice, and a representative sample of press coverage of the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the flight of Apollo 11. Full-size paper facsimiles of individual newspaper pages are also available. (JY)

In this annual, cumulative catalog over 19,000 books, journals, newspapers, and multi-volume sets available on microfilm (16mm. and 35mm.), microfiche, or micro-opaque cards from United States publishers are listed in alphabetical order. Only microform publications offered for sale on a regular basis are listed. Books are entered by author. Author entries include author, title, and date of publication of the work in its original form. Journals and sets are entered by title. Journal entries provide the title and dates of publication of the journal in its original form. Newspapers are entered by state. Archival materials and manuscripts are entered as they are listed by the publishing organization. For each entry the price, publisher, and type of microform is noted. A directory of the publishers, including telephone numbers, is provided. (JY)

This annotated bibliography is a revised, up-dated version of one which was published in 1966. Most of the material has been published within the past 10 years, with the exception of earlier material that contains information that is still valid today. Included are books, pamphlets, reports, theses, articles, and microfilm, all of which are in the reference collection of the Foundation Library. A total of 94 items are included in the bibliography. In increasing numbers microform publishers are engaged in reproducing valuable and extensive collections of books, documents and manuscripts that would otherwise be impossible for most libraries to acquire due to their scarcity and cost. The availability of these collections and the difficulties encountered when using them prompted the development of this guide. The microform collections or series described in this guide reflect the holdings of Milner Library, Illinois State University. However, because these collections are found in many other libraries, this guide can serve a larger audience than those using Milner Library. The series are grouped under the following headings: general, busness, education, history, library science, literature, music, psychology, religion, social sciences, technology, and theatre. Not included in this guide are separate, individual monographs, newspapers, or periodicals in microform. At the conclusion of the sections describing the microform series or collections is a bibliography with imprint information which includes an alphabetical listing of the series mentioned in the body of the text. The paper reports on a series of programs that have been developed at the Moore School to process data-bases, consisting of textual items, and to index and arrange the data items in accordance with an automatically generated classification system. The programs produce the directories and the rearranged data-base on microfilm, where it may be searched using a microfilm reader, or magnetic tape for input to an on-line computer system for search and retrieval. A study made with three specially selected groups of students reading similar material revealed that there was little difference in speed and comprehension between reading printed material in books or on microfilm. One test group was composed of students trained to read in thousands of words per minute. (Author)

This research report was conducted to determine if graduate students comprehend microfilmed material significantly quicker than hard copy material of a similar level of difficulty since they tend to read microfilm quicker. The research followed a descriptive design with a statistical inference obtained from an analysis of data collected from a systematic sampling of a defined population. A data collection instrument was a test designed to test each individual on both hard copy and microfilmed material. An independent variable was manipulated to insure material of similar difficulty as measured by the Dale-Chall Readability Formula. It was concluded that the test population tended to read and comprehend microfilmed material slightly quicker than comparable hard copy material. The difference in the reading rates and comprehension of hard copy and microfilmed material of the population sampled was not significant. (Author/HOD)

This report describes the current status of Project INTREX experiments and provides a detailed technical record. Activities concentrating on the bibliographic access problem involve: (1) the investigation of a digitally-encoded, machine-manipulated augmented catalog, for which the task of preparing entries for 10,000 documents is about half completed; (2) testing a user-oriented program for consulting the augmented catalog; (3) constructing a display console; and (4) developing an experimental transmission system for full-text access to the documents that have been cataloged. The computer-stored augmented-catalog part of the Experimental Library Storage and Retrieval System is now working satisfactorily for demonstration purposes. The augmented-catalog console and the full-text-access equipment are nearing completion and should be functioning early in the next reporting period. Recent emphasis has been on the software and on the design and construction of the interface and control logic associated with these items. (Author/JB)

Project Intrex is a program of experiments intended to provide a foundation for the design of future information transfer systems, with the library of the future visualized as a computer-managed communications network. In order to discover the necessary facts, especially in the area of the user's interaction with the system, experimentation is being conducted in the environment of an operating library as well as in the laboratory. The initial efforts have been concentrated on the problems of access--bibliographic access through an augmented catalog, and access to full text. The efforts during the six months covered in this report have concentrated on the implementation of the experimental library information storage and retrieval system. The configuration of the initial system is defined in detail and the objective now is to bring it to a state in which it can be tested and evaluated as a complete system. This report presents details of progress being made on the development of (1) the augmented catalog of at least 10,000 journal articles, reports and theses in selected areas of materials science and engineering; (2) the augmented-catalog display console; (3) the storage and retrieval programs; and (4) the full-text-access system. After three years of preparation, the Project Intrex research team has begun to subject parts of its augmented catalog system to interactions with users who were interested in the substance of the stored information and uncontaminated by prior association with the Intrex research effort. The experiences with users to date, as well as progress made on the engineering side, are presented in this report. All the elements of the Intrex System have been completed, all are working individually, and with the exception of the display-console-typewriter, magnetic-drum link, all have been interconnected and made to work as a complete system. Since the first user experiments were conducted before completion of the display console and since full-text material cannot be requested presently from an IBM 2741 typewriter terminal, the kind used in the experiments, only catalog information could be extracted by the initial group of users. Nevertheless, the experiments have contributed substantially to a preliminary understanding of system performance and user behavior. (Author/JB)

The directory is arranged alphabetically by products. Each listing has an identifying number. By filling in an inquiry card with the appropriate number, one may receive free of charge information which has been prepared by the manufacturer about the item. (JY)

After a summary of background knowledge useful in searching for information, the authors cover extensively the sources available to the researcher interested in locating educational data or conducting a search of bibliographic materials. They list reference books, dictionaries, almanacs, yearbooks, subject matter summaries; and sources for statistical data, news items, and audiovisual materials and discuss various techniques for their use. The section on bibliographic searching contains a summary of bibliographic methods and provides a source list of book reviews, catalogs, pamphlet indexes, periodical articles, abstracts, serial publications, government documents, Office of Education publications, publications of educational organizations, and educational research reports. In updating this edition the authors have added a chapter covering microforms and other media associated with automated data processing. Appendixes contain a list of recent supplementary references and a sample of an Alexander Universal Bibliography card. Each chapter ends with a few exercises designed to test the reader's comprehension of the material covered. (JY)

This paper was prepared to provide a frame of reference to the role of microfilm within the information retrieval world and to provide an opportunity for evaluation of the use of microforms for active retrieval applications. The paper discusses the principles of information retrieval, considers subject and classification indexing, and describes elements of coding for manual and machine applications. The implications of information retrieval practices on microform information retrieval systems are considered. The author discusses costs, equipment, advantages and disadvantages, and other characteristics of manual, semiautomated, and automated information retrieval using aperture card, microfiche, roll and cartridge film, and film strip systems. Illustrations of various types of indexes show the differences in format of KWIC, KWOC, co-occurrence, and coordinate indexes. A 39-item bibliography is appended. (Author/JW)
