Botrytis cinerea can infect almost all of the important horticultural crops and cause severe economic losses globally every year. Modifying candidate genes and studying the phenotypic changes are among the most effective ways to unravel the pathogenic mechanism of this crop killer. However, few effective positive selection markers are used for B. cinerea genetic transformation, which limits multiple modifications to the genome, especially genes involving redundant functions. Here, we optimized a geneticin resistance gene, BcNPTII, based on the codon usage preference of B. cinerea. We found that BcNPTII can greatly increase the transformation efficiency of B. cinerea under G418 selection, with approximately 30 times higher efficiency than that of NPTII, which is applied efficiently to transform Magnaporthe oryzae. Using the gene replacement method, we successfully knocked out the second gene BOT2, with BcNPTII as the selection marker, from the mutant ΔoahA, in which OAHA was first replaced by the hygromycin resistance gene HPH in a field strain. We obtained the double knockout mutant ΔoahA Δbot2. Our data show that the codon-optimized BcNPTII is an efficient positive selection marker for B. cinerea transformation and can be used for various genetic manipulations in B. cinerea, including field wild-type strains. The effects of different types of biostimulants on crops include improving the visual quality of the final products, stimulating the immune systems of plants, inducing the biosynthesis of plant defensive biomolecules, removing heavy metals from contaminated soil, improving crop performance, reducing leaching, improving root development and seed germination, inducing tolerance to abiotic and biotic stressors, promoting crop establishment and increasing nutrient-use efficiency. Protein hydrolysates are mixtures of polypeptides and free amino acids resulting from enzymatic and chemical hydrolysis of agro-industrial protein by-products obtained from animal or plant origins, and they are able to alleviate environmental stress effects, improve growth, and promote crop productivity. Amino acids involve various advantages such as increased yield and yield components, increased nutrient assimilation and stress tolerance, and improved yield components and quality characteristics. They are generally achieved through chemical or enzymatic protein hydrolysis, with significant capabilities to influence the synthesis and activity of some enzymes, gene expression, and redox-homeostasis. Increased yield, yield components, and crop quality; improved and regulated oxidation-reduction process, photosynthesis, and physiological activities; decreased negative effects of toxic components; and improved anti-fungal activities of plants are just some of the more important benefits of the application of phenols and phenolic biostimulants. The aim of this manuscript is to survey the impacts of amino acids, different types of protein hydrolysates, phenols, and phenolic biostimulants on different plants by presenting case studies and successful paradigms in several horticultural and agricultural crops. Lily (Lilium spp.) is an important horticultural crop, but its use is limited due to serious pollen contamination problems. There are many studies on pollen development in model plants, but few on flower crops such as lilies. Gibberellin (GA) is a large class of hormones and plays an important role in plant vegetative growth and reproductive development. GAMYB is a group of the R2R3-MYB family upregulated by gibberellin, and plays an important role in anther development. Here, we isolated a novel GAMYB, named LoMYB65, from lily, which was closely related to the AtMYB65 and AtMYB33 in Arabidopsis. Fluorescence quantitative PCR results showed that LoMYB65 was mainly expressed in lily anthers. LoMYB65 could be activated by 288 mmol • L-1 GA3 treatment and the LoMYB65 protein was located in the nucleus and cytoplasm, and had transactivation in yeast and tobacco leaf cells. The conserved motif within 226 amino acids of the C-terminal of LoMYB65 contributed to its transactivation. Overexpression of LoMYB65 caused dwarf phenotype, unnormal tapetum development, less seeds of siliques in transgenic Arabidopsis plants, the transgenic plants showed partly male sterile. Simultaneously, silencing of LoMYB65 with VIGS (Virus Induced Gene Silencing) in lily anthers caused unnormal pollen development and reduced the pollen amount. Overexpression of LoMYB65 in Arabidopsis and silencing of LoMYB65 in lily resulted in decreased pollen counts, so we speculate that LoMYB65 may be dose-dependent. Overall, these findings suggest that LoMYB65 may play an important role in anther development and pollen formation in lily. Horticultural plants face significant challenges in maintaining productivity and quality owing to environmental stresses, including salinity, drought, heavy metal toxicity, and extreme temperatures. As a consequence, effective strategies are needed to enhance plant resilience to mitigate the effects of these stresses. Melatonin, a naturally occurring molecule, has emerged as a promising tool to improve abiotic stress tolerance in horticultural plants. Melatonin exhibits multiple protective mechanisms, including scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), enhancing antioxidant defense systems, regulating stomatal closure, modulating gene expression, and promoting osmotic adjustment. This review highlights the potential application of melatonin as a novel approach to enhance abiotic stress tolerance and boost plant growth and physiological functions in horticultural plants, necessitating further research and practical application. Many European apple (Malus ×domestica Borkh.) cultivars used for making alcoholic cider have a highly biennial bearing habit. To determine target crop load recommendations, seven cider cultivars grown in a high-density orchard were hand-thinned to crop densities of 0, 3, 6, and 9 fruit/cm2 trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) or left unthinned as a control for 3 consecutive years (2016-18). Treatments were imposed on the same trees for all 3 years. Greater year-to-year yield variability, as measured by the biennial bearing index (BBI), correlated negatively with cumulative yields both within and among cultivars. Greater crop density had a negative correlation with the amount of return bloom in all years, but reducing crop density had a negligible effect on return bloom in the "off" year. When trees were left unthinned in the high-crop "on" years there was little to no return bloom in the following year. Partial budget analysis found that manually reducing crop density would result in a positive net change in 3-year profitability for Dabinett, but not the other cultivars. Over 4 years, under conservative assumptions about fruit set, chemical thinning to 9 fruit/cm2 TCSA would likely result in increased cumulative profitability in all seven cultivars. Hand-thinning was projected to be less profitable than chemical thinning but would still result in increased net profitability over 4 years, for five of the seven cultivars. These findings highlight the horticultural and economic benefits of crop load management for cider apple orchards. Further, many high-tannin cider cultivars can sustain a higher crop density than what is recommended for fresh-market apple production and still have adequate return bloom and cumulative yields. Fruit flies are an economic important of pest on horticultural crops. One of the commodities that are affected much due to fruit fly attack is salacca var. pondoh. The number of fruit flies attacking salacca increased from 2018 to 2021. The aims of the research was to study the population dynamics in salacca orchards in relation to climate factors and host plants. The research was conducted from July 2022 to May 2023 in salacca orchards that are members of the Salacca Farmers Association Mitra Turindo in Wonokerto, Turi, Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The methods were counting the number of fruit flies trapped in three observation groups with different levels of sanitation and host plants around salacca orchards. Descriptive and arithmetic methods were used to determine the pattern of population oscillation among the three observation groups and differences in sanitation levels and host plants around the salacca orchards. The result showed that population fluctuations of Bactrocera spp. in salacca orchards were correlated with rainfall and relative humidity and less correlated with temperature and wind speed. This study characterized the agrochemical properties of V. labrusca grape pomace (GP) and evaluated the effect on the rhizobacteria Azospirillum brasiliense and horticultural crops, determining safety as fertilizer and/or mulching. Two first bioassays were performed with the GP at different concentrations evaluating toxicity on A. brasiliense, and on tomato and lettuce seeds. A third bioassay evaluated GP mulching effects on tomato and lettuce plants growing with amounts varying between 20 and 80 t ha-1. Agrochemical characterization showed that GP is rich in potassium and phosphorus, with a low content of Na+ salts (SAR < 15). The GP at 2.5% (w v-1) significantly increased survival rates of N2-fixing rhizobacteria. Results on seed germination revealed lettuce was more susceptible to increasing GP concentrations. The application of 20 t ha-1 of GP in greenhouse experiments increased lettuce and tomato root biomass. Furthermore, the aerial part of tomato showed no toxicity symptoms. Protected agriculture is especially useful for crop production in regions where climatic conditions are unsuitable for outdoor or open field production. By controlling the temperature, humidity and amount of light of the internal environment, these structures allow plants to grow and flower at any time of the year. Likewise, They also make possible the establishment of seedbeds to obtain seedlings and their subsequent transplanting to the field, as well as the production of pathogen-free and high quality fruits and seeds,, also reducing the need for pesticides and other toxic chemicals. Due to the great success of this technology in horticultural and fruit agriculture, research into other factors that can affect crops and also cause production losses has been encouraged. The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a very valuable horticultural crop that is produced all over the world and has a significant economic impact in Asia. Several biotic and abiotic stresses (soil-borne and foliar diseases, insect pests, drought, salt, heat, and frost) severely damage the crop, however, pose a serious threat to its output. As a result, it's crucial to make efforts to introduce valuable resistance genes into tomato from their wild relatives. This study analyzed the growth of inter and intra- specific tomato hybrids to determine the high-quality hybrids. By crossing wild (S. pimpinellifolium PI1, PI4) and domesticated tomato (S. Lycopersicum LY13, LY4, LY26, LY9, and LY11) and S. Lycopersicum cv micro-tom LY15) species, hybrids of tomato plants produced by interspecific. For morphological characteristics, the fruit weight of tomato hybrids results intermediate among prenatal lines. Results towards number of fruits per turs also show intermediate findings but LY13 X PI4 show lesser number of fruits per truss in hybrids on the same hand LY15 XLY4 show high yield and maximum number of fruits as compared to parents. Despite of fact that the wild parent male had a strong influence on hybrids for numerous morphological traits like fruit set per truss, fruit diameter, leaf length, and fruit yield. After crossing with wild cultivars, F1 tomato hybrids also had biochemical traits in reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar, total sugar, total soluble solids, and lycopene, which were improved in cultivated tomato. The wild type of tomato played a significant part in raising the lycopene content in hybrids. Therefore, it is considered that this research would expand the gene pool available for tomato breeding globally, enabling it to better adapt to climate change and withstand biotic and abiotic stress. Carrying out land use statistics through remote sensors and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allows obtaining not only numerical information but also thematic mapping of land uses. It is an important element for the analysis of territorial dynamics, allowing for interpretations to be made about the functioning and structure of the space to be analyzed, which results in very useful information for researchers or decision makers in general. This article presents the results of the analysis of the mapping of peri-urban land uses obtained by remote sensing in the period 1990-2023, for four neighborhoods in the city of Santa Rosa, La Pampa. The dynamics of the main land uses of the study area are analyzed, through the quantification and spatial distribution of eight identified categories: continuous and discontinuous urban; in the process of urbanization or vacant; industrial, commercial and other non-residential uses; urban equipment; horticultural crops and water. The availability of genome-sequencing and genome-editing techniques has increased the applicability of innovative solutions, opening up revolutionary prospects for developments in horticultural plant breeding. The Cucurbitaceae family is a group of plants of great importance in horticulture due to their high nutritional and economic value. These plants serve as important models for elucidating the principles of plant development and refining yield improvement strategies. While traditional breeding approaches have made significant contributions to the production of cucurbits, they have also been limited by the reduced genetic diversity and lower rates of variation inherent in these species. This comprehensive review summarises the latest developments in genome editing in cucurbits. It covers various aspects of enhancing plant traits to resist biotic stresses such as pathogenic fungi and viruses, as well as abiotic stresses such as adverse climate change, especially stresses caused by drought and salinity. This study focused on improvements in plant quality and on the optimisation of plant architecture, sex determination of flowers and fruit features. This review provides insights that may hold great promise for the future of horticultural crop improvement and serves as an important reference for the advancement of genome-sequencing and gene-editing technologies in cucurbits. Thrips are a common pest in most horticultural and ornamental crops. They are particularly common in greenhouses in western Romania. In the present study, we investigated thrips preference for different coloured traps as well as specific structure and abundance in Petunia hybrida varieties in greenhouses. Thrips attraction to colour was assessed using three commercially available coloured sticky traps: yellow, orange and blue. Taxonomically, the diversity of thrips is reflected in the relatively large number of species, identified in Petunia, 6 species: Frankliniella intonsa, Frankliniella occidentalis, Frankliniella schultzei, Scirtothrips dorsalis, Thrips palmi and Thrips tabaci. Of these species, 2 are the most common and abundant: Frankliniella occidentalis (n= 172) and Thrips tabaci (n= 163). In the Petunia varieties, significant differences were observed depending on the colour of the trap, these were found between yellow-blue (p = 0.000) and yellow-orange (p = 0.000) and it is observed that there are no significant differences between blue-orange (p = 0.434). Agrifood system includes the totality of the stakeholders, interactions and decisions that contribute to agricultural production. Small farms are highly vulnerable to climate change because most depend on weather conditions, especially rainfall, cultivate small areas in mountainous areas and hard-to-reach areas, and do not have access to technical or financial support. Local and traditional varieties play an important role, as a resource for breeding, sustainable crop diversity in farms or to compliment diets with organic products. Plant diversity grown in small holdings in Bulgaria is characterized by a large number of crops: vegetables, grain legumes, medicinal and aromatic species. The sustainable production of horticultural crops provides a key part of the healthy food. Our aim is to explore developing of conserved collections through new information strategies, supporting free access to plant gene fund. The study provides information on crop diversity in rural areas using the survey method and analysing the passport data from conducted collection missions. Pineapple being one of the important horticultural crops of Nagaland, adoption of sustainable cultivation practices is crucial with changing climatic conditions. The study was conducted in Nagaland during 2018-2022 to evaluate the factors influencing the use of information sources and technology adoption for sustainable pineapple cultivation. Altogether 275 respondents were selected from 13 villages representing three leading pineapple growing districts of Nagaland using proportionate random sampling. The study revealed that informal sources of information were most preferred by the respondents. Selection of improved varieties, planting materials, weed management, ratooning, storage, and post-harvest management practices were fully adopted by the respondents. Variables viz., size of land under pineapple cultivation, annual income, income from pineapple cultivation, training exposure, experience, social participation, attitude, economic motivation, and knowledge had significant relationships with the information sources utilization and technology adoption. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.582 and 0.581 for explaining the utilization of information sources and adoption respectively. It is recommended that strengthening extension-farmer linkages and improving digital literacy may help enhance the efficacy of the information sources as well as improve technology adoption by pineapple growers. Plants get exposed to multiple stresses throughout their phenological growth stages. At most, these stresses are attributed to single or combined stresses like salinity, water deficits, wounding, mineral deficiencies, potting bag size, soil/root media density and type, soil pH, and the type of production system employed. Multistress factors have been widely reported to reduce the plant growth and development, strength, yield, and quality of horticultural crops globally. In the literature, reports extensively recommended the use of silicon-based biostimulants to improve the growth and development of commercial horticultural plants; however, little has been reported in South Africa on the recovery response mechanisms of beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), and kale (Brassica oleracea L.) grown under multi-stress conditions treated with silicon-based biostimulants, and using the cheaper eco-friendly production systems. In South Africa, most silicon-based biostimulant production companies reserve their novel concoctions as their company secrets; thus, many of the products are never tested in public to ascertain and monitor compliance with the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies, and Stock Remedies Act 36 of 1947 in South Africa. On the other hand, emerging farmers and smallholder growers are failing to afford existing agricultural insurance options, thereby affecting their yields against the commercially developed farmers. Although the government aids farmers, the assistance does not cover all costs associated with the multistress losses. Some farmers and growers adopted advanced production systems; however, at most, these systems are costly and rely primarily on electricity as a source of power, which is a challenge in South Africa. This paper explains various production systems used by commercial and emerging farmers, and the smallholder growers in South Africa to reduce costs related to multistress losses. Moreover, an alternative eco-organic production system that applies silicon-based biostimulant as a novel idea for commercial vegetables grown under extreme multi-stress conditions is recommended for emerging farmers and smallholder growers in South Africa. Future studies should be based on eco-friendly production systems in vegetable production in line with Sustainable Development Goals, to combat poverty and improve the livelihood of the African countries. Capsicum annuum L., also known as bell or sweet pepper, is a globally significant horticultural crop in the Solanaceae family. India’s red and yellow colored capsicum holds 13th rank in export. In India, color capsicum is a valuable crop, yielding 2.34 times more per square meter in protected cultivation comparing open field. Tamil Nadu contributes 16,689 tonnes on 284 hectares, comprising 5.13% of India’s total. Modern agriculture benefits from automation and robotics, especially in protected cultivation for selective, high-quality capsicum harvesting, reducing labor fatigue. In consideration to the issues like timely and repetitive harvestings and shortage of labour a study was focused to develop a robotic harvester. The study evaluated the engineering attributes of red and yellow capsicum during protected cultivation, classified into size categories A, B and C. Moisture content ranged from 83.6% to 87.12%. Capsicum dimensions spanned 57 mm to 110 mm in length, 52 mm to 98 mm in width, and 51 mm to 96 mm in thickness. Red capsicum had slightly larger arithmetic, geometric, square mean, and equivalent diameters, with sphericity ranging from 0.89 to 0.93. Surface area varied from 87 cm² to 316 cm², volume from 108 cm³ to 363 cm³, and mass from 67 g to 226 g, with red capsicum slightly larger. The highest static friction coefficient was with aluminum, at 0.61 to 0.66. Using the CIELAB model for color estimation, the significant color difference for red and yellow capsicum were 79.26 and 70.28 respectively. Moisture content was negatively correlated with aspect ratio and sphericity, and other attributes had positive correlations. Background: Brassinolide, known as the seventh plant hormone, can improve the photosynthetic capacity of plants, promote plant growth and development, promote the formation of horticultural crop yield, improve the quality of horticultural crops, and also improve the ability of plants to resist biological and abiotic stresses. Results: The effects of different concentrations of exogenously sprayed 2,4-epibrassinolide (EBR) on growth, physiological and photosynthetic characteristics of 'All-round large leaf coriander' were studied in substrate culture. The results showed that 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 mg.L− 1 EBR promoted the growth of coriander and increased the aboveground fresh and dry weights, with 0.5 mg.L− 1 EBR having the most significant effect. Spraying 0.1 mg.L− 1 EBR increased the content of soluble sugars and protein of coriander leaves. Spraying 0.1 and 0.5 mg.L− 1 EBR significantly increased the chlorophyll content and photosynthetic parameters of coriander leaves, and 0.5 mg.L− 1 EBR also significantly increased the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of coriander leaves. Spraying 0.5 mg.L− 1 EBR upregulated the expression of CsRbcS, CsFBPase, and CsAld. Correlation analysis showed that aboveground fresh weight under exogenous EBR treatment was significantly positively correlated with aboveground dry weight, plant height, Pn, Gs, Ci, and CsAld (P < 0.05), and soluble sugar content was significantly positively correlated with the number of leaves, Y(II), qP, and CsRbcS. The results of the principal component analysis (PCA) showed that there was a significant separation between the treatment and the control groups. Spraying 0.5 mg.L− 1 EBR can promote the growth of coriander, improve the quality of coriander leaves, and strengthen coriander leaf photosynthetic capacity. This study provides new insights into the promotion of coriander growth and development following the application of exogenous EBR. Conclusion: Exogenous EBR treatment increased coriander plant height, leaf growth and aboveground dry weight, and enhanced photosynthesis. Melon (Cucumis melo L.) represents an agriculturally significant horticultural crop that is widely grown for its flavorful fruits. Downy mildew (DM), a pervasive foliar disease, poses a significant threat to global melon production. Although several quantitative trait loci related to DM resistance have been identified, the comprehensive genetic underpinnings of this resistance remain largely uncharted. In this study, we utilized integrative transcriptomics and metabolomics approaches to identify potential resistance-associated genes and delineate the strategies involved in the defense against DM in two melon cultivars: the resistant 'PI442177′ ('K10-1′) and the susceptible 'Huangdanzi' ('K10-9′), post-P. cubensis infection. Even in the absence of the pathogen, there were distinctive differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between 'K10-1′ and 'K10-9′. When P. cubensis was infected, certain genes, including flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO), receptor-like protein kinase FERONIA (FER), and the HD-ZIP transcription factor member, AtHB7, displayed pronounced expression differences between the cultivars. Notably, our data suggest that following P. cubensis infection, both cultivars suppressed flavonoid biosynthesis via the down-regulation of associated genes whilst concurrently promoting lignin production. The complex interplay of transcriptomic and metabolic responses elucidated by this study provides foundational insights into melon's defense mechanisms against DM. This research was designed to investigate the metabolite profiling, phenolics, and flavonoids content as well as the potential nematicidal properties of decoction (ZpDe), orange-yellow resin (ZpRe) and essential oil (ZpEO) from Argentinean medicinal plant Zuccagnia punctata Cav. Additionally, the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of ZpDe and ZpEO were determined. Metabolite profiling was obtained by an ultrahigh-resolution liquid chromatography MS analysis (UHPLC-ESI-QTOF/OT-MS-MS) and GCMS. The nematicidal activity was assayed by a standardized method against Meloidogyne incognita. The antioxidant properties were screened by four methods: (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH), Trolox equivalent antioxidant activity assay (TEAC), ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP), and lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes (ILP). The antibacterial activity was evaluated according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) rules. The ZpDe, ZpRe and ZpEO displayed a strong nematicidal activity with an LC50 of 0.208, 0.017 and 0.142 mg/mL, respectively. On the other hand, the ZpDe showed a strong DPPH scavenging activity (IC50 = 28.54 µg/mL); ILP of 87.75% at 250 µg ZpDe/mL and moderated antimicrobial activity. The ZpEO showed promising activity against a panel of yeasts Candida albicans and non-albicans (ATCC and clinically isolated) with MIC values from 750 to 1500 µg/mL. The ZpDe showed a content of phenolics and flavonoid compounds of 241 mg GAE/g and 10 mg EQ/g, respectively. Fifty phenolic compounds were identified in ZpDe by ultrahigh-resolution liquid chromatography (UHPLC–PDA– Q-TOF-MS) analysis, while forty-six phenolic compounds were identified in ZpRe by UHPLC-ESI-Q-OT-MS-MS and twenty-nine in ZpEO using a GC-MS analysis, updating the knowledge on the chemical profile of this species. Global food production is challenged by plant pathogens that cause significant crop losses. Fungi, bacteria, and viruses have long threatened sustainable and profitable agriculture. The danger is even higher in vegetatively propagated horticultural crops, such as garlic. Currently, quarantine, rouging infected plants, and control of natural vectors are used as the main means of disease and pest control in garlic crops. Agricultural biotechnology, meristem-tip culture, and cryotherapy offer solutions for virus eradication and for the multiplication of 'clean stocks', but at the same time, impact the symbiotic and beneficial components of the garlic microbiome. Our research involves the first metatranscriptomic analysis of the microbiome of garlic bulb tissue, PCR analyses, and a biological assay of endophytes and pathogens. We have demonstrated that in vitro sanitation methods, such as shoot tip culture or cryotherapy can alter the garlic microbiome. Shoot tip culture proved ineffective in virus elimination, but reduced bacterial load and eliminated fungal infections. Conversely, cryotherapy was efficient in virus eradication but demolished other components of the garlic microbiome. Garlic plants sanitized by cryotherapy exhibited a lower survival rate, and a longer in vitro regeneration period. The question arises whether total eradication of viruses, at the expense of other microflora, is necessary, or if a partial reduction in the pathogenic load would suffice for sanitized garlic production. Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea) causes gray mold disease (GMD), which results in physiological disorders in plants that decrease the longevity and economic value of horticultural crops. To prevent the spread of GMD during distribution, a rapid, early detection technique is necessary. Thermal imaging has been used for GMD detection in various plants, including potted roses; however, its application to cut roses, which have a high global demand, has not been established. In this study, we investigated the utility of thermal imaging for the early detection of B. cinerea infection in cut roses by monitoring changes in petal temperature after fungal inoculation. We examined the effects of GMD on the postharvest quality and petal temperature of cut roses treated with different concentrations of fungal conidial suspensions and chemicals. B. cinerea infection decreased the flower opening, disrupted the water balance, and decreased the vase life of cut roses. Additionally, the average temperature of rose petals was higher for infected flowers than for non-inoculated flowers. One day before the appearance of necrotic symptoms (day 1 of the vase period), the petal temperature in infected flowers was significantly higher, by 1.1 °C, than that of non-inoculated flowers. The GMD-induced increase in petal temperature was associated with the mRNA levels of genes related to ethylene, reactive oxygen species, and water transport. Furthermore, the increase in temperature caused by GMD was strongly correlated with symptom severity and fungal biomass. A multiple regression analysis revealed that the disease incidence in the petals was positively related to the petal temperature one day before the appearance of necrotic symptoms. These results show that thermography is an effective technique for evaluating changes in petal temperature and a possible method for early GMD detection in the cut flower industry. Due to food borne pathogen, maintaining the viability of fresh fruits and vegetable is a great concern. Several strategies including microbial and plant-based formulations to reduce their infection and maintain quality of the fresh food are in practice. Currently, Bacillus has gained significant traction as a biocontrol agent for regulating diseases affecting a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. Food-grade citric acid and plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) were used as antimicrobial agent, MIC results showed that PGPR (14.87 mm) and CA (20.25 mm) exhibited notable antimicrobial activity against E. coli. Lettuce treated with PGPR showed reduction in E. coli contamination, E. coli was detected at 3.30, 3.68 in control, and 2.7 log CFU/g in random root injury lettuce inoculated with PGPR KACC 21110 respectively. Random root injury showed a trend toward increasing E. coli internalization. The strains exhibited resistance to multiple antibiotics, including Imipenem, tetracycline, ampicillin, cefotaxime, cefoxitin, and ceftriaxone. Comprehensive data analysis revealed the presence of ten putative bacteriocin or bacteriocin-like gene clusters. The structure of lipopeptide homologs was characterized by using QTOF-MS/MS. The mass ion peaks attributed to surfactin homologs, surfactin A ion at m/z 1008.66, surfactin B, C at m/z 1022.67 and 1036.69. In addition to surfactin, a polyketide oxydifficidin and lipopeptide NO were extracted and detected from the extract of B. velezensis. Both isolates are key biocontrol agents and have significant potential in combating foodborne pathogens and can be utilized to explore novel antibacterial products for preventing pathogens in fresh produce. Modern megacities offer convenient lifestyles to their citizens. However, agriculture is becoming increasingly vulnerable, especially during unexpected public health emergencies such as pandemics. Fortunately, the adaptability of terrace vegetables cultivation presents an opportunity to grow horticultural crops in residential spaces, bringing numerous benefits to citizens, including enhanced nutrition and recreational engagement in the cultivation process. Although certain planting skills and equipment have been developed, the citizens tend to sow some seeds with unknown pedigree, it is rare to find new plant varieties specifically bred for cultivation as terrace vegetables. To expand the genetic basis of new breeding materials, elite parents, and varieties (prebreeding) for terrace cultivation, this review not only discusses the molecular breeding strategy for the identification, creation, and application of rational alleles for improving horticultural characteristics including plant architecture, flavor quality, and ornamental character, but also assesses the potential for terrace cultivation of some representative vegetable crops. The production of horticulture crops is severely restricted by abiotic stress factors such as salinity, drought, temperature fluctuation (low and high), and heavy metals (HMs). Abiotic stress causes metabolic changes in horticultural plants that impair growth and productivity. In this era of global climate change, extreme environmental conditions reinforce the situation and severely limit plant growth and productivity. Researchers have been investigating for a long time to determine how resilience and response to environmental stress elements. The use of phytohormones to mitigate the adverse effects of abiotic stresses on horticultural plants has been widely acknowledged as a powerful strategy. Salicylic acid (SA) has been extensively studied for its importance in improving plant abiotic stress tolerance. However, the processes that may underlie SA-induced plant tolerance to significant abiotic stressors are still poorly understood. Based on recent reports, this paper provides an overview of the role of SA in horticultural plants under both optimal and stressful conditions; critically evaluates the role of SA in plants exposed to key abiotic stresses; discusses potential mechanisms potentially governing SA-induced plant abiotic stress-tolerance; and briefly highlights significant aspects that have yet to be explored in the current context. Knowledge of the genes underlying a given trait is highly useful for developing molecular markers for breeding and is the foundation for future genomic crop improvements. The cultivated strawberry, F. ×ananassa, is a valuable horticultural crop. Genome sequencing revealed that of the four diploid strawberry subgenomes contributing to the F. ×ananassa octoploid genome, the woodland strawberry, F. vesca, subgenome is dominant. Thus, F. vesca is an important system for determining gene function and should be used as a source of genetic diversity for F. ×ananassa breeding. Ethyl methanesulfonate mutagenesis of H4 F7-3, an inbred line of F. vesca, resulted in oneM2 line that did not produce any strawberries over a 3-year period in the greenhouse. This line was named fruitless 1. The fruitless 1 phenotype results from a single gene recessive mutation. Microscopic characterization revealed that fruitless 1 failed to produce fruit because anthers fail to develop properly before meiosis, resulting in no pollen production. Biochar is being used with increasing frequency as a soil remediator. However, its impact depends on soil limitations, biochar source and concentration applied. We studied Guadua chacoensis bamboo biochar as a saline-alkaline soil amendment. Aqueous solutions with 0, 2.5 and 5% of bamboo biochar (BC) were used to determine their influence on seed germination rate and radicle length in two horticultural species moderately tolerant to salinity and alkalinity: arugula (Eruca sativa) and radish (Raphanus sativus). Also, we amended a saline-alkaline soil with 0, 0.5 and 2.5% of BC to evaluate its effect on plant height, leaf and root biomass of both horticultural crops. The application of 2.5 and 5% BC solution decreased arugula germination in 3.14% and 5.2%, respectively, compared to 0% BC. The addition of BC decreased radicle length in both species and such reduction was more significant with the higher BC concentration. The addition of 0.5% and 2.5% BC as amendment in a saline-alkaline soil decreased arugula height in 27.32% and 50.33%, respectively, compared to 0% BC, resulting in smaller plants with less leaf and root biomass. The BC amendment did not affect leaf biomass, but 2.5% BC reduced root biomass in 53.85% compared to 0% BC. These results seem to be influenced not only by the BC inherent characteristics but also by the increase in soil pH, caused by the addition of biochar. Further studies may evaluate the impact of BC addition with different properties on saline-alkaline soils, and its use as an amendment in the remediation of acid soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a destructive transboundary lepidopterous pest affecting more than 78 countries worldwide by infesting a wide array of agronomic and horticultural crops such as maize and cabbage. In a previous study, we demonstrated the synergized toxicity of three local plant extracts (Rhazya stricta Decne., Sophora mollis (Royle) Baker and Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal) with synthetic insecticide chlorantraniliprole against 3rd instar larvae of S. frugiperda. Here we evaluated the combined efficacy of indigenous entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) (Beauveria bassiana (Balsam) Vuillemin and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorokin) along with above-mentioned plant extracts and chlorantraniliprole against 3rd instar larvae of S. frugiperda under laboratory and semi-field conditions. Toxicity bioassays with two EPF revealed that the highest concentration (1.0 × 109 conidia per mL) of B. bassiana caused maximum larval mortality (76%) at 10th day post-treatment, followed by M. anisopliae, causing 70% larval mortality at the same concentration. In vitro evaluation of six binary combinations of LC33s of EPF (B. bassiana and M. anisopliae) and plant extracts revealed a synergized toxicity (83–87%) of four combinations comprising S. mollis and W. somnifera with B. bassiana and M. anisopliae against 3rd instar S. frugiperda larvae. Furthermore, these insecticidal combinations including chlorantraniliprole (@ half of the label-recommended dose) exhibited as well a significant synergized toxicity (i.e. 37.75% at 1st day to 99.25% at 7th day post-treatment) under semi-field conditions, suggesting their further investigation under field against S. frugiperda and on its natural enemies. Background and Aims Gigantism is a key component of the domestication syndrome, a suite of traits that differentiates crops from their wild relatives. Allometric gigantism is strongly marked in horticultural crops, causing disproportionate increases in the size of edible parts such as stems, leaves or fruits. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) has attracted attention as a model for fruit gigantism, and many genes have been described controlling this trait. However, the genetic basis of a corresponding increase in size of vegetative organs contributing to isometric gigantism has remained relatively unexplored. Methods Here, we identified a 0.4-Mb region on chromosome 7 in introgression lines (ILs) from the wild species Solanum pennellii in two different tomato genetic backgrounds (cv. 'M82' and cv. 'Micro-Tom') that controls vegetative and reproductive organ size in tomato. The locus, named ORGAN SIZE (ORG), was fine-mapped using genotype-by-sequencing. A survey of the literature revealed that ORG overlaps with previously mapped quantitative trait loci controlling tomato fruit weight during domestication. Key Results Alleles from the wild species led to lower cell number in different organs, which was partially compensated by greater cell expansion in leaves, but not in fruits. The result was a proportional reduction in leaf, flower and fruit size in the ILs harbouring the alleles from the wild species. Conclusions Our findings suggest that selection for large fruit during domestication also tends to select for increases in leaf size by influencing cell division. Single fruit weight is an important goal of crop production and horticultural species domestication, but its genetic mechanism is still unclear. In this study, the fruits of different peach fruit types in their first rapid development period were used as materials. First, the differentially expressed genes were analyzed by RNA-seq data. Secondly, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was used to calculate the correlation between genes and modules, the genes with different expression patterns were divided into 17 modules, the modules were correlated with the phenotype of single fruit, and a highly correlated blue module was obtained. Then, the possible differentially expressed genes and signal pathways among different fruit types were compared by gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and 43 significant pathways were obtained. Finally, 54 genes found to be repeatedly expressed in 3 of the methods were screened, and 11 genes involved in plant hormone signal transduction were selected for subsequent analysis according to their functional annotations. Combined with the changing trend of phenotype, three genes (Prupe.7G234800, Prupe.8G079200 and Prupe.8G082100) were obtained as candidate genes for single fruit weight traits. All three genes are involved in auxin signal transduction, with auxin playing an important role in plant growth and development. The reintegration of agro-waste into the same agriculture site fulfils the objective of the European Bio-Economy Strategy: to reduce transport costs, waste volume, and the need for mineral fertilizers. One of the fundamental principles in sustainable agriculture is the recycling of crop residues through composting or vermicomposting. From this process, it is possible to obtain organic matter for the production of aqueous extracts (tea) that can be used as a source of nutrients in fertigation as an alternative to mineral fertilizers. The objective of this research was to evaluate the use of an aerated or non-aerated aqueous extract as a recirculating nutrient solution in a hydroponic culture (NFT) of lettuce. For this, the test method was compared to hydroponic cultivation with a conventional nutrient solution. The conventional nutrient solution contained minerals or synthetic fertilizers and the aqueous extracts of vermicompost from vegetal residues of horticultural crops. The evolution of the chemical composition of the nutrient solutions during cultivation was analyzed, obtaining adequate concentrations of NO3−, K+, and Ca2+ and taking possible imbalances in nutrients such as P-H2PO4− into consideration. Plants fertigated with an organic and aerated nutrient solution obtained good yields and improvements in quality by having six times less N-NO3− in edible leaves compared to plants exposed to the mineral treatment. The weed Chenopodium album can infest a number of agricultural systems due to its high reproductive capacity, seed dormancy, high persistence in the soil, ability to sprout and develop under adverse environmental circumstances, and other peculiar biological traits. This weed prevents the germination and/or growth of plants as well as native vegetation because of its allelopathic characteristics. Since they have the potential to reduce agricultural productivity by more than 90% and infest a wide variety of horticultural and agronomic crops, this weed poses a potential threat to food security worldwide. In consideration of these consequences, effective control measures are required. Various cultural, mechanical, and biological methods have been used to control C. album with variable degrees of success, depending on cropping systems and weed infestation levels. Since C. album's widespread herbicide tolerance has decreased the efficiency of chemical management, biological control could be a potential management strategy. The incorporation of biodegraded substrates during the germination of horticultural crops has shown favorable responses in different crops; however, most of these studies evaluate their effect only in the first days of seedling life, and do not follow up on the production process under greenhouse or open field conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phenological development of Lycopersicon esculetum (tomato) seedlings in greenhouses that were germinated with biodegraded substrate mixed with peat moss. To find the best plant performance condition and determine whether the biodegraded substrate allows tomato plants to be obtained with the conditions for their production, the response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were used. Three response surface models and three neural network models were developed to analyze the plant growth, the leaf length and the leaf width. The results obtained show that plant height during the first days presented statistically significant differences among the different treatments, with an initial average height of 5.3 cm. The length of the leaves at transplantation was statistically different, maintaining a length of 2.4, and the width of the leaves at transplantation measured 1.8 cm. The RSM and ANN models allowed the estimation of the optimal value of the adequate amount of degraded substrate to germinate Lycopersicon esculetum and reduce the use of peat moss. The coefficient of determination (r2) indicates that the ANNs presented a better data fit (r2 > 0.99) to predict the experimental conditions that maximize the study variables; in this sense, the plants obtained with 100% biodegraded substrate showed a better development, which suggests its use as an alternative substrate in the germination process and to reduce the use of peat moss. Pathosystem associated with phytoplasmas in forest plants is an emerging threat to forest productivity and biodiversity. Diseases caused by or associated with phytoplasmas occur in hundreds of commercial and native plants, causing minor to extensive damage. Phytoplasmas are wall-less, phloem-limited, insecttransmitted, plant pathogenic bacteria that are transmitted by phloem-sap feeding insects of the order Hemiptera under the families such as Cicadellidae, Delphacidae, Cixiidae, Derbidae, Psyllidae and rarely by Pentatomidae and Tingidae. Disease transmission occurs very quickly, often plants become infected before adopting any management strategies. The single most effective management practice of managing the vector in agricultural/horticultural crop is to cover plants with insect exclusion netting but this is not feasible and practical in the case of forest trees. Because of these limitations, researchers are shifting to manipulation genetics in host plants to affect vector populations and transmission of pathogen but big lacunae exists in our knowledge on the vectors of phytoplasma diseases in Indian forestry. We review the literature addressing the phytoplasma diseases in forest species, the lacunae existing in the insect vectors and the need for determining the vectors for possible management of phytoplasma diseases in forest trees. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a cause of a prevalent and destructive disease that attacks many horticultural food crops, such as lettuce. This soil-borne necrotrophic fungal pathogen causes significant economic losses in worldwide lettuce production annually. Furthermore, current methods utilized for management and combatting the disease, such as biocontrol, are insufficient. In this study, three cultivars of lettuce (one Crispy and two Leafy cultivars of red and green lettuce) were grown in central Poland (Lodz Voivodeship), a widely known Polish horticultural region. In the summer and early autumn, lettuce cultivars were grown in control and S. sclerotiorum-infected fields. The lettuce cultivars (Templin, Lollo Rossa, and Lollo Bionda) differed phenotypically and in terms of the survival of the fungal infection. The Crispy iceberg Templin was the most susceptible to S. sclerotiorum infection compared to the other cultivars during both vegetation seasons. The total content of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and anthocyanins varied among cultivars and fluctuated during infection. Moreover, phenolic content was affected by vegetation season with alterable environmental factors such as air temperature, humidity, soil temperature, and pH. The most increased levels of phenolics, both flavonoids and anthocyanins in infected plants, were observed in the Leafy red Lollo Rossa cultivar in both crops. However, the highest survival/resistance to the fungus was noticed for Lollo Rossa in the summer crop and Lollo Bionda in the autumn crop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a country like India where agriculture is the most prevalent occupation of the people, there is still a disconnect between the farm and the household consumption basket. The paper tries to analyze the recent shift of Indian agriculture towards horticultural crops like fruits and vegetables in light of whether the increase in production has translated into such items being included in the diet. The findings of the paper help in understanding the longdebated agriculture nutrition disconnects in policy discourse. The analysis reveals that there has been an unprecedented increase in the production of horticultural crops over the years when compared to food grains. An analysis of the dietary diversity reveals that there has only been a marginal increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables rather the trend is more or less stagnant. The paper concludes that the high export value of horticultural crops resulting in maximum export of the produce leads to high prices of fruits and vegetables in the market and their subsequent exclusion from the consumption basket. Climate has an important role in agricultural activities and can be examined from two perspectives. First, what locations are suitable for a specific plant, and second, what plants are suitable for a climate. The latter approach is less considered; thus, in this study, it has been investigated by introducing a standard method (Sys method). The study area is located in Mako city. Climatic suitability evaluation was performed by numerical (parametric) method using the Maku Synoptic Station data for pistachio, almond, pears, plum, sour cherry and sweet cherry. The findings showed that except for pistachio, with marginally suitable class (S3), other plants were classified as moderately suitable class (S2) but the value of climatic index for each crop was different. The introduced method made it possible to identify the most important effective climatic factors for the cultivation of each plant and determine the most limiting factor in the phenological period. Such findings showed that there is a close relationship between crops, phenological period, climatic characteristic and location. Based on this, the most suitable plant or plant species can be selected for a region, using the phenological period of the plant and climatic characteristics. However, for sustainable development, other components of the land, such as soil and/or topography, should also be evaluated. In general, the introduced approach can be used as an efficient tool, both for choosing the most suitable plants in a climate and for choosing the most suitable place (in terms of climate) for specific plants. Root-knot nematodes (RKNs) are groups of nematodes that cause significant diseases in horticultural and field crops. Chemical pesticides used to control RKNs could pollute environmental resources and ultimately affect human health. Therefore, eco-friendly efforts are needed. Previous research revealed that nematode-trapping fungi (NTFs) as the biological enemies of nematodes has been observed suppressing the nematode population. This study aimed to isolate NTF species from municipal waste-contaminated soil in Medan City, Indonesia, and identified them using morphological and molecular analysis. Furthermore, their biocontrol potential against Meloidogyne hapla Chitwood (Nematoda: Meloidogynidae) was assessed. Soil sample covered seven districts with seven repeats for isolation and in vitro assessment against M. hapla was done on CMA and observed after 12-72 hours. Three isolates were successfully obtained and proven effective in suppressing M. hapla by 97.7% (isolate sH51 and sH52) and 89.27% (isolate sH53). Morphological identification on PDA and genetic analysis of ITS concluded that sH51 is Drechslerella brochopaga Drechsler (Ascomycota: Orbiliaceae) and sH53 is Arthrobotrys thaumasius Drechsler (Ascomycota: Orbiliaceae). Morphological analysis for isolate sH52 reveals it as Arthrobotrys sinensis but is limited to Arthrobotrys sp. based on phylogeny analysis thus additional gen needs to be sequenced for confirmation. Farmers in India have benefited considerably from the combination of satellite-enabled services and data obtained on the ground. The India Meteorological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences, provides weather forecasting, agro-advisory services, agromet services, soil moisture monitoring, and agricultural extension initiatives to encourage agricultural operations in India. Indian Space Research Organization's (ISRO) also partners with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on several satellite data and geographic information systems-based agricultural applications. ISRO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, has developed applications including horticultural crop inventory and site suitability for expansion in unutilized places; crop assessment using medium- and high-resolution satellite data; field information gathering with field photos using a smartphone application; and crop cutting experiments based on satellite-derived crop vigor information. ISRO has provided technology for FASAL and the National Agricultural Drought Assessment and Surveillance System to the Department of Agriculture Cooperation and Farmer Welfare. ISRO has also incorporated the Central Water Commission's monitoring of irrigation systems. Overall, satellite-enabled services have transformed agricultural operations in India by providing farmers with precise and timely data that enable them to make educated decisions about their crops, resulting in increased crop yields and financial returns. Chitosan (Ch) was functionalized with Bidens pilosa (BP) extract at 1, 3, or 5% to form Ch-1 BP, Ch-3 BP, and Ch-5 BP, respectively. Ch without plant extract was used as a control. The composite films were characterized and tested for antifungal properties in the agar disc diffusion approach and antioxidant capacity in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay. Chitosan films fused with B. pilosa extract inhibited the growth of P. expansum with a 10 mm inhibition diameter compared to control films (3.33 mm). Ch-1 BP exhibited the highest (79.13%) radical scavenging activity (RSA), and control films had the lowest RSA (50.97%). Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis identified 20 metabolites, including phenolic acids (9), organic acids (8), monosaccharides (1), amino acids (1), flavonoids (1), and six unknown polyphenols. Chitosan-based composite coating (Ch-1% BP) exhibited the lowest weight loss percentage (16.74%) and decay incidence (17.3%), while the untreated fruit showed higher weight loss and decay incidence (48.33% and 83.2%, respectively). The effectiveness of chitosan-enriched coating in maintaining the postharvest quality of raspberry fruit suggests that this plant could be a postharvest agent for controlling microbial spoilage and protecting against oxidative stress, ultimately resulting in extended storage in horticultural crops. SUMMARY: Horticultural plants contribute immensely to the quality of human's life. The rapid development of omics studies on horticultural plants has resulted in large volumes of valuable growth‐ and development‐related data. Genes that are essential for growth and development are highly conserved in evolution. Cross‐species data mining reduces the impact of species heterogeneity and has been extensively used for conserved gene identification. Owing to the lack of a comprehensive database for cross‐species data mining using multi‐omics data from all horticultural plant species, the current resources in this field are far from satisfactory. Here, we introduce GERDH (https://dphdatabase.com), a database platform for cross‐species data mining among horticultural plants, based on 12 961 uniformly processed publicly available omics libraries from more than 150 horticultural plant accessions, including fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants. Important and conserved genes that are essential for a specific biological process can be obtained by cross‐species analysis module with interactive web‐based data analysis and visualization. Moreover, GERDH is equipped with seven online analysis tools, including gene expression, in‐species analysis, epigenetic regulation, gene co‐expression, enrichment/pathway and phylogenetic analysis. By interactive cross‐species analysis, we identified key genes contributing to postharvest storage. By gene expression analysis, we explored new functions of CmEIN3 in flower development, which was validated by transgenic chrysanthemum analysis. We believe that GERDH will be a useful resource for key gene identification and will allow for omics big data to be more available and accessible to horticultural plant community members. Peppers (Capsicum annuum L.), as a horticultural crop with one of the highest ascorbic acid contents, are negatively affected by detrimental environmental conditions both in terms of quality and productivity. In peppers, the high level of ascorbic acid is not only a nutrient substance but also plays a role in environmental stress, i.e., drought stress. When suffering from drought stress, plants accumulate dehydrins, which play important roles in the stress response. Here, we isolated an SK3-type DHN gene CaDHN2 from peppers. CaDHN2 was located in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and cell membrane. In CaDHN2-silenced peppers, which are generated by virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), the survival rate is much lower, the electrolytic leakage is higher, and the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is greater when compared with the control under drought stress. Moreover, when CaDHN2 (CaDHN2-OE) is overexpressed in Arabidopsis, theoverexpressing plants show enhanced drought tolerance, increased antioxidant enzyme activities, and lower ROS content. Based on yeast two-hybrid (Y2H), GST-pull down, and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) results, we found that CaDHN2 interacts with CaGGP1, the key enzyme in ascorbic acid (AsA) synthesis, in the cytoplasm. Accordingly, the level of ascorbic acid is highly reduced in CaDHN2-silenced peppers, indicating that CaDHN2 interacts with CaGGP1 to affect the synthesis of ascorbic acid under drought stress, thus improving the drought tolerance of peppers. Magnesium (Mg2+) is pivotal for the vitality, yield, and quality of horticultural crops. Central to plant physiology, Mg2+ powers photosynthesis as an integral component of chlorophyll, bolstering growth and biomass accumulation. Beyond basic growth, it critically affects crop quality factors, from chlorophyll synthesis to taste, texture, and shelf life. However, Mg2 + deficiency can cripple yields and impede plant development. Magnesium Transporters (MGTs) orchestrate Mg2+ dynamics, with notable variations observed in horticultural species such as Cucumis sativus, Citrullus lanatus, and Citrus sinensis. Furthermore, Mg2+ is key in fortifying plants against environmental stressors and diseases by reinforcing cell walls and spurring the synthesis of defense substances. A burgeoning area of research is the application of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs), which, owing to their nanoscale size and high reactivity, optimize nutrient uptake, and enhance plant growth and stress resilience. Concurrently, modern breeding techniques provide insights into Mg2+ dynamics to develop crops with improved Mg2+ efficiency and resilience to deficiency. Effective Mg2+ management through soil tests, balanced fertilization, and pH adjustments holds promise for maximizing crop health, productivity, and sustainability. Rachiplusia nu (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae, Plusiinae) is a defoliator of soybean (Glycine max L., Fabaceae), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L., Asteraceae), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L., Fabaceae), and horticultural crops in temperate southern South America; however, there is little genetic information available about this pest insect. Recently, concerns about this insect have increased because of its suspected resistance to Bt soybean and its spread to tropical regions. To better understand pest dynamics, and therefore implement suitable management strategies, a thorough knowledge of the genetic variability and spatial structuring of populations is required. In this paper, R. nu larvae were sampled from various crops and locations in central Argentina (where the pest is endemic) to assess diversity and population structure through mtDNA sequence analysis. In addition to the analysis of the standard cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) 'barcode' fragment, a new set of primers was developed to explore genetic variation in the cytochrome b (Cytb) gene. COI and Cytb concatenated sequences revealed an overall high haplotype diversity (mean ± SD = 0.798 ± 0.037) and low nucleotide diversity (0.00137 ± 0.00013). The haplotype network showed a total of 19 haplotypes, separated by at most five mutational steps. A main central haplotype and four additional frequent haplotypes (accounting for 80% of the specimens examined) were distributed across populations with no obvious pattern related to host plant or geographic origin. Analysis of molecular variance further supported a weak population structure, where genetic variation within populations was the main source of total variation (ca. 96%). Pairwise comparisons showed only minor genetic differentiation among some of the populations studied. Implications of these findings in the context of R. nu control are discussed. Abiotic stress has been shown to induce the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant cells. When the level of ROS surpasses the capacity of the endogenous defence mechanism, oxidative stress status is reached, leading to plant damage and a drop in crop productivity. Under oxidative stress conditions, ROS can react with polyunsaturated fatty acids to form oxidized derivatives called phytoprostanes (PhytoPs) and phytofurans (PhytoFs), which are recognized as biomarkers of oxidative damage advance. Modern agriculture proposes the use of biostimulants as a sustainable strategy to alleviate the negative effects of oxidative stress on plants. This work evaluates the dose effect of natural antioxidant extract to mitigate the oxidative‐stress deleterious effects in melon and sweet pepper exposed to thermal stress. The plants were sprayed with Ilex paraguariensis (IP) aqueous extract in three different concentrations before exposure to abiotic stress. PhytoP and PhytoF levels were determined in the leaves of melon and pepper plants. IP1 and IP2 were effective against oxidative stress in both plants, with IP1 being the most protective one. IP1 decreased the levels of PhytoPs and PhytoFs by roughly 44% in both melon plants and pepper plants. The yield, with IP1, increased by 57 and 39% in stressed melon and pepper plants, respectively. IP3 foliar application in melon plants induced a pro‐oxidant effect rather than the expected mitigating action. Lignin is an important secondary metabolite that maintains the mechanical strength of horticultural plants and enhances their ability to respond to external environmental changes such as biotic and abiotic stresses. However, excessive accumulation of lignin can lead to lignification of horticultural products, reducing their taste quality and nutritional value. Therefore, the lignin content of horticultural products needs to be controlled at a reasonable level, and studying and regulating lignin metabolism is very meaningful work. This article focuses on the synthesis, accumulation, and regulation of lignin in horticultural crops in recent years, provides a systematic analysis of its molecular mechanism and application prospects, and sheds insights into the directions that need further research in the future. This article provides an important basis for the regulation of lignin accumulation and lignification in horticultural crops and proposes new ideas for improving the quality of horticultural crops. GR24, a synthetic strigolactone analogue, plays a crucial role in a wide range of life processes. Studying the effects of the pre-harvest application of GR24 on strawberry ripening and fruit quality provides a scientific basis for the application of GR24 in horticultural crop production. GR24 solutions at concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1 and 2 µmol/L were applied to strawberries at the de-greening stage. The results showed that pre-harvest treatment with 1 µmol/L GR24 increased fruit weight and size; promoted fruit softening; increased the content of sugars, total flavonoids, total phenolics, and anthocyanins, and increased antioxidant activity. These results proved that GR24 effectively accelerated fruit ripening and improved fruit quality. In addition, to gain more insight into the biological mechanism of GR24 in fruit ripening, we conducted a combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis. It was found that the differences were related to sugar and flavonoid biosynthesis, particularly in the later stage of fruit ripening. qRT-PCR analysis revealed that GR24 increased gene expression activity and metabolite accumulation in the anthocyanin and sugar biosynthetic pathway, thereby promoting strawberry color and flavor. Simple Summary: Leafhoppers are tiny insects that are found in large populations in many different crops. They feed on the leaves and can transmit pathogens at the same time, damaging the plants and reducing final production. Several species are found in vineyards, but their identification is difficult, and the application of appropriate management methods is affected. This study investigates the occurrence and composition of Typlocybinae species in the Greek vineyards. The combination of molecular and morphological analysis identified the species Arboridia adanae, Asymmetrasca decedens, Hebata decipiens, Hebata vitis, Jacobiasca lybica and Zygina rhamni. At the same time, the results of the DNA analysis based on the mitochondrial region revealed many haplotypes within the six different collected species. Insects of the subfamily Typhlocybinae (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) are pests of economically important agricultural and horticultural crops. They damage the plants directly or indirectly by transmitting plant pathogens, resulting in significant yield loss. Several leafhoppers of this subfamily use vines as hosts. Accurate and rapid identification is the key to their successful management. The aim of this study is to determine the Typhlocybinae species that exist in vineyards all over Greece and investigate the relationship between them. For this purpose, yellow sticky traps were placed, morphological and molecular data were collected, and phylogenetic models were analyzed. The mitochondrial marker Cytochrome Oxidase Subunit I (mtCOI) was applied for the DNA and phylogenetic analysis. The combination of morphological and molecular data resulted in identifying the existence of six different species all over Greece: Arboridia adanae, Asymmetrasca decedens, Hebata decipiens, Hebata vitis, Jacobiasca lybica and Zygina rhamni.
