Fission tracks (on apatites and zircons) thermochronological analysis, geomorphological and seismic profile studies are used to understand the evolution, the geometry and the mecanism of recent deformations within european crust (First, the denudation of the massif is recorded at about 22 Ma, probably linked with the “arc de Castellane” structuration during middle and upper Miocene and then localy at about 6 Ma with denudation along the « Camp des Fourches » fault. An uplift more generalized of 0.8 mm/yr (30°C/km) is recorded at 3.5 Ma and followed by a late reversal motion of 1 mm/a along the Bersezio/Veillos fault. In spite of a large glacial erosion of the massif, the geomorphological analysis confirms these last results. Using a surface processes model, the erosional rate associated is localy of 1 mm/a and seems now higher on the eastern watershed of the massif.From the analysis of 70 seismic-reflection profiles, the north-Ligurian margin deformation could be linked to a blind thrust propagation up to the messinian salt formation in the basin.This recent alpin foreland compressif deformation is guided by a basement tectonic along inherited structures and followed the UHP rocks exhumation from the internal zones.; Afin de comprendre l'évolution, la géométrie et le mécanisme des déformations récentes (Une dénudation du massif est enregistrée vers 22 Ma, certainement en relation avec la structuration de l'arc de Castellane au Miocène moyen-supérieur, qui se poursuit localement vers 6 Ma par dénudation le long de la faille du « Camp des Fourches ». Plus globalement un soulèvement à 0,8 mm/a (30°C/km) est enregistré à 3,5 Ma et suivi tardivement par un mouvement inverse le long de la faille de Bersézio/Veillos à 1 mm/a. Malgré une forte emprunte d'érosion glaciaire présente sur le massif, l'analyse géomorphologique conforte ces derniers résultats. A partir d'un modèle d'évolution de processus de surface, le taux d'érosion associé est estimé localement à 1 mm/a et semble aujourd'hui plus important sur le bassin versant oriental du massif.D'après l'analyse de 70 profils sismique-réflexion, la déformation de la marge nord-Ligure serait liée à la propagation d'un chevauchement aveugle jusque dans les formations salifères messiniennes du bassin.Cette déformation récente compressive de l'avant-pays alpin est guidée par une tectonique de socle le long de structures héritées et fait suite à l'exhumation des roches THP dans les zones internes.

Obsidyen kaynaklarının oldukça yoğun olduğu Anadolu'da, obsidyen ticareti önemli bir yer tutmaktaydı. Bu nedenle obsidyen arkeoloji bilimi için çok önemli bir materyaldir. Bu çalışmada, Diyarbakır il sınırları içerisinde bulunan Çayönü arkeolojik yerleşiminden alman üç adet obsidyen örneğine fizyon izleriyle tarihlendirme tekniği uygulanmıştır. Örneklerden yaklaşık lmm kalınlığında ve 3mm-5mm genişliğinde ikişer parça alındı. Parçalardan bir tanesi fosil izlerin sayımında, diğeri yapay izlerin sayımında kullanıldı. Obsidyen parçalarından her biri yavaş nötronların yardımıyla Triga Mark II Reaktörü'nün Pavia Üniversitesi, İtalya - `Lasy Susan` LS fasilitesinde (Cadmium oranı altın için 6.5 ve kobalt için 48) radyasyona tutulmuştur. Kimyasal yıkama için gerekli uygun yüzeylerin elde edilmesinde çeşitli örnek hazırlama teknikleri kullanılır. En basit olanı örneğin içinde yeni bir yüzey oluşturma amaçlı olan işlemdir. Bu çalışmada obsidyen için en fazla kullanılan yöntem olan kalıplama ve parlatma işlemi kullanılmıştır. Parlatma sonrası çok küçük kırıklıklar ve gözenek sebebiyle fizyon izlerinin sayımında büyük zorluklar ve sonuçlarda sapmalara sebep olmaması için yerleştirme, parlatma ve kesme işlemleri büyük özen gösterilerek yapılmıştır. Çalışmamızda kimyasal yıkama öncesi son İşlem olarak 0.05um AI2O3 parlatma tozu kullanılmıştır. Parlatma işlemi tamamlandıktan sonra %16'lık HF asit ile 1-4 dakika yıkanarak fizyon izleri bir optik mikroskop ile gözlenebilecek büyüklüğe ulaşmıştır. Bulunan yaşlar 7a no'lu örnek için 78.059xl04 yıl, 12a no'Iu örnek için ise 59.728x1 04 yıldır. Bu yaşlar örneklerin arkeolojik yaşları olmayıp, jeolojik oluşum yaşlarını vermektedir. Prof. Dr. K. Serdar Girginer Obsidian is one of the most common materials especially in Neolithic period settlements. Trade of obsidian had great importance in Anatolia where obsidian resources can be found frequently. Therefore, obsidian is one of the important materials for Archaeological Science. In this study, the fission track dating technique has been applied to three obsidian samples that taken from Çayönü archaeological settlement situated in Diyarbakir provenance. Pairs of small particles, which are approximately at 1 mm thickness and 3-5 mm wide, were taken from the samples. One was used to count fossil tracks and the other one for induced tracks. One split from each? obsidian sample was irradiated in the `Lazy Susan` (LS) facility (Cadmium ratio for Gold 6,5 and for Cobalt 48) of the Triga Mark II nuclear reactor, University of Pavia, Italy. Various sample preparation techniques have been used to obtain suitable surfaces for etching. We have used the simplest procedure which is. cleavage to produce a fresh surface that was previously inside the sample. The obsidian samples have been imbeded in epoxy and than polished. Proper care has been taken during mounting, cutting and polishing. Otherwise micro cracks and scratches from polishing will etch in to distinctive and numerous figures that obscure fission track and make counting arduous. In our work the final finish is obtained using 0,05 um gama AI2O3 polishing powder. The samples have been etched by using %16 HF for 1-4 minutes. The ages were found for samples are; sample 7a is 78.059x1 04 years and 12a is 59.728xl04 years. These ages are not the archaeological ages of the samples but probably giving the geological formation ages or show a time period related to geological activities in the region where obsidian resources were localized. The island of Corsica and the Maures-Tanneron massif (Provence, southern France) represent the conjugate rifted margins of the Liguro-Provençal basin. Corsica was detached from the Provence about 30 Ma ago, the timing of onset of Ligurian rifting, and has since rotated by about 30° anti-clockwise to arrive at its present-day position. We have employed apatite flssion-track (AFT) thermochronology on granitic and metamorphic samples taken from Corsican and Maures-Tanneron basement rocks as well as alpines 'schistes lustrés' units in Corsica, in order to constrain the cooling histories and the tectonic evolution of the Liguro-Provençal basin margins. The AFT data indicate that : - the Tanneron massif (AFT ages 145- 150 My) appears to record the earliest cooling history, reflecling thermal relaxation related to opening of the Tethys. - the Maures basement (AFT ages 20-25 My) clearly records a thermo- tectonic evolution associated with Liguro-Provençal rifting. - the island of Corsica, which was the main focus of this work and which shows a complex geomorphology and a polyphased tectonic evolution. shows a remarkable zoning in the distrib ution of AFT ages, reflecting the signature of at least two pos t-Oligocene thermal events. Those events are related to the opening of liguro-provençal basin (20-25 My) in the west, and exhumalion of the hercynian basement. relaled to Tyrrhenian extension (12- 16 My), in the east. ln the east-Tenda shear zone, which forms the contact between the alpine units and hercynian basement in northern Corsica, our results indicate that the Tenda massif was being exhumed from about 21 Ma onwards. The youngest ages indicate a late brittlee structuring of the massif by east-trendi ng normal faults, during the period 18-16 Ma, i.e. during detrital deposition within the Miocene Saint-Florent basin. The denudation of Cape Corse to the west of Bastia begins around 12 Ma, that is between 11 and 8 My after the last recorded movement of the east-Tenda shear zone. We cannot, therefore, relate this delachment with the antiformal structure of Cape Corse, which was more probably formed in relation to offshore extension in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This result will have to have to be incorporated in future studies of the exhumation of the alpine units of Corsica., La Corse et le Massif des Maures-Tanneron représentent les marges conjuguées du bassin liguro -provençal. International audience; We dated by the fission track method eighteen samples of obsidian glass. Of these, seventeen were artefacts collected in prehispanic archaeological sites from Ecuador and Colombia and one comes from a secondary obsidian source located in southern Colombia. When our data are compared to (i) the fission track ages of obsidian from volcanic sources and (ii) the PIXE chemical composition of the same artefacts and of samples from obsidian sources, eight discrete age/composition groups appear.Fifteen artefacts might come from a single unknown source: three others from sources in the Sierra de Guamani (East of Quito): one from the Mullumica rhyolitic flow and two from the Quiscatola/Yanaurcu sources. A fourth artefact migh come from the South Colombia source of Rio Hondo. At least five other sources are necessary to account for thr variety of ages and compositions found in the arefact collection studied.

79 ÖZET Bu çalışmada FT tekniğinin obsidiyenlere uygulanması gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmada gerekli olan materyaller Kars Diğor 10 km Güneyi Yağlıca Köyü'nde yapılan kazılardan alındı. Deneyde 5 arkeolojik obsidiyen örneği çalışılmıştır. Örnekler hazırlanırken, materyallerden 1 mm kalınlığında kesitler halinde ve her materyalden ikişer örnek olmak üzere alınmıştır. Bir tanesi Belçika'ya gönderi lip yavaş nötronlar ile radyasyona tutuldu. Bunlara uygulanan nötron dozu miktarı 9.203 x 1014 n/cm2 dir. Radyasyona tutulan ve tutulmayan kesitler birlikte hazırlanıp parlatıldı. Optik mikroskopta izlerin görünür hale gelebilmesi için örnekler kimyasal yıkama işleminden geçirilidi. Bu aşamadan sonra örnekler fizyon izi analizi yapılabilir duruma geldi. Her örnek için fizyon izi yoğunlukları hesaplandı. Elde edilen iz yoğunlukları eşitlik 2. 2. 29' da yerine konarak obsidiyenler tarihlendirildi. Elde edilen yaş 4,2 x 106 yıl olup materyalin oluşum yaşını vermektedir. Obsidiyen örnekleri üzerinde yapılan bu çalışmada elde edilen yaşlar, materyalin oluşum yaşını vermiştir. Böylece FT tekniği kullanılarak obsidiyenlerin tarihlendirilebileceği sonucuna varıldı. Bir kısım örnekler sorunlu olduğundan değerlendirmeye almayıp tarihlendirme yapılamadı. 80 SUMMARY In this study, the application of the FT technique to the obsidians has been realized. The necessary materials have been collected from Kars Diğor excavation. In the experiment, 5 obsidian artifacts have been studied. Two slices have been cut from each material. One of them has been sent to Belgium and exposed to slow neutron radiation in the reactor. The applied dose of neutron radiation is about 9.203 x 1014 n/cm2. The fossil and induced pieces have been prepared together and polished. An etching process has been applied in order to make the track visible under the optical microscope. Then the fission tracks can be counted easily. For each sample, density of fission tracks has been calculated and was used to obtain the ages of the samples by using FT age equation. The corrected age is 4.2 x 106 year and indicate the formation age of the obsidian samples. Consequently, it is determined that the FT technique can be used in order to date obsidians. Since some of the samples were problematic, they were kept out of the study and dating process was not applied to them. 95

ÖZ Yapılan çalışmada, GUneydogu Anadolu'da Degirmentepe höyllgUnden toplanmış 12 arkeolojik obsidyen buluntusuna FT `Fizyon izleriyle Tar inlendirme` tekniği uygulanmıştır. Bu amaçla obsidyen örneklerinden yaklaşık lmm kalınlığında kesitler alınarak örnek hazırlama işlemine başlandı. Her örnekten alınan iki kesitten birisi yapay fizyon izi oluşturmak amacı ile yavaş nötronlarla radyasyona tutuldu. Yapay ve doğal fizyon izlerini içeren aynı örneğin kesitleri birlikte hazırlandı, parlatıldı ve fizyon izlerinin optik mikroskopta görllnllr hale gelmesi için kimyasal yıkama işleminden geçirildi. Daha sonra bir optik mikroskop kullanılarak fizyon izi analizi yapılıp fizyon iz yoğunlukları hesaplandı. Hesaplanan iz yoğunlukları örneklerin tarihlendirmesinde kullanıldı. Bu tarihlendirme çalışmalarının yanında, fizyon izlerinin kimyasal yıkama işleminden nasıl etkilendiğini belirlemek amacı ile yıkama sllresi ve sıcaklığı değiştirilip izlerin büyüklüklerinin (Çaplarının) değişimi incelendi. VI ABSTRACT In this study, FT `Fission Tracks Dating` Technique has been applied to 12 obsidian artifacts collected from Degirmentepe excavation. The samples have been prepared by cutting two fragments from each samples: the first one for the counting the spontaneous fission tracks, the second one for the determination of the number U atom per unit volume in the sample. The later has been irradiated by the termal neutrons. Two fragments of the same obsidian sample having the fossil and induced fission tracks respectively have been embedded in synhetic resin. In order to expose a smooth internal surface, the mounted glass pieces have been grounded and polished. Track etching has been carried out to rander the damage trails visible under a normal optical microscope. Track counts have been realized under an optical microscope by using a square grid mounted in one of the oculars. The density of etched tracks have been calculated for each sample to insert it in the FT age equation. 57
