Prochilodus nigricans is extensively exploited in fishing and aquaculture activities in the Brazilian Amazon, it is the definitive host for Neoechinorhynchus curemai Noronha, 1973. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of N. curemai in P. nigricans and the parasite-host relationship in three rivers (Juruá, Crôa and Môa) in the municipality of Cruzeiro do Sul, state of Acre, Brazil. Fish were caught, weighed, measured, and subjected to necropsy, and the gastrointestinal tract and viscera were analyzed. A total of 178 specimens of N. curemai were found in 61 infected fish, with the (p= 58.62%). The prevalence, mean intensity, and mean abundance were higher in hosts from the Môa River, and lower from the Juruá River. Regarding the length-weight relationship, the b-value did not differ statistically from three (b=3) for fish species in the three locations, nor in parasitized and non-parasitized species. In addition, growth was considered isometric, and in the case of the relative condition factor, there was no difference in fish hosts between the three rivers. The correlation between parasite intensity, condition factor, length, and weight of P. nigricans was not significant. Thus, this parasite infestation varied between the habitats. However, this did not influence the growth and development of the hosts. This study aimed to determine the prevalence rate and to identify parasites (endoparasite and ectoparasite) on Java Langur and Silvery Gibbon, these primates are rehabilitated in The Aspinall Foundation Indonesia Program. This research was conducted from February until October 2020. The fecal examination methods used in this research were native method and ovatec flotation method, while the ectoparasite examination used native method, mounting method, and scraping method. Based on a total of 68 samples examined, the result showed that 10 samples were positive infected by Trichuris trichiura and 2 samples were infested by Pedicinus ancoratus. The conclusion of this study indicated that the prevalence rate of Trichuris trichiura was 21.1% and Pedicinus ancoratus was 5.3% on 19 West Java Langurs, the prevalence rate of Trichuris trichiura was 3.3% and Pedicinus ancoratus was 3.3% on 30 East Java Langurs, the prevalence rate of Trichuris trichiura was 26.3% and no infestation of Pedicinus ancoratus was found on 19 Silvery Gibbons.

Fecal samples from 24 animals of eight different species were collected at Hann Zoological Park in Senegal. They were analyzed with the Telemann-Rivas qualitative microscopic method and Mac Master quantitative method. Of all the samples, 66.7% were positive, and each positive animal was infested with at least one helminth egg species, whereas protozoa were present in only four animals. In carnivores, the eggs of parasites such as Toxascaris leonina and Toxocara cati, and hookworm eggs were the most present, whereas in primates, the eggs of Trichuris sp. and Entamoeba sp. have been identified. This study provides a basis for the establishment of treat­ments in these animals.

Globodera pallida is a white potato cyst nematode present in the Andes, which causes huge losses to Peruvian farmers. An RNA-seq analysis allowed the identification of candidate genes that could mediate resistance against this pathogen. Two varieties, “María Huanca” (Solanum andigena) clone resistant (CIP 279142.12) and “Chimbina Colorada” (Solanum chaucha) (CIP 701013) clone susceptible to G. pallida, were used to identify differentially expressed genes. Total RNA from roots was extracted 72 hours post inoculation with second stage juveniles. Sequencing was done using the Illumina Hiseq 2500 platform. Reads were screened for quality issues and then mapped to the reference potato genome (clone DM1-3516 R44 v4.03). Here, we report 27717 and 27750 genes expressed in the resistant and susceptible variety respectively. During a survey of helminth parasites of the brown ground snake, Atractus major Boulenger, 1894 (Serpentes: Dipsadidae) from Moyobamba, region of San Martin (northeastern Peru), a new species of Glossidiella Travassos, 1927 (Plagiorchiida: Plagiorchiidae) was found and is described herein based on morphological and ultrastructural data. The digeneans found in the lung were measured and drawings were made with a drawing tube. The ultrastructure was studied using scanning electron microscope. Glossidiella peruensissp. nov. is easily distinguished from the type- and only species of the genus, Glossidiella ornata Travassos, 1927, by having an oblong cirrus sac (claviform in G. ornata), distinctly ovate testes (rounded testes in G. ornata) and button-like papillae on the dorsal edge of the oral sucker region (absent in G. ornata). In addition, G. peruensissp. nov. differs from G. ornata by possessing a longer distance between testes and substantially wider oral and ventral suckers. This is the first time that a species of digenean is described and reported parasitizing snakes in Peru.

This study used information about Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus Travassos, Artigas & Pereira, 1928 that had been published over a period of more than 90 years to investigate the infection and distribution patterns of this nematode in teleost freshwater fish in Brazil. This study was carried out using 181 samples from 82 fish species in 19 families within the five orders, with predominance of Characiformes species (71.6%). We organized a matrix-based parasite-host system in which the fish species were classified in different trophic levels and parasitic infection parameters according data available on host fish species with different life histories and geographic distributions across Brazilian hydrographic basins. Procamallanus (S.) inopinatus showed prevalence ranging from low to moderate, low abundance, low intensity, typically aggregated dispersion, and preferential infection of the hosts' gastrointestinal tract. There was difference in prevalence between detritivorous, omnivorous, carnivorous and piscivorous hosts, but no difference in intensity and abundance was found due to similarity in the communities of this endoparasite among the host fish species. The geographic distribution of this parasite encompasses the river of the Amazon, Paraná, São Francisco, North Atlantic, South Atlantic and Eastern basins. Lastly, suggestions regarding the life cycle of P. (S.) inopinatus, with its potential intermediate hosts, were discussed. Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi utilizar as informações sobre a Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus Travassos, Artigas & Pereira, 1928, publicadas ao longo de mais de 90 anos (1928 e 2019), para a busca de padrões de infecção e distribuição desse nematoide em peixes de teleósteos de água doce, no Brasil. Este estudo foi realizado usando-se 181 amostras de 82 espécies de peixes de 19 famílias, distribuídas em cinco ordens, com predominância de espécies de Characiformes (71.6%). Foi organizado um sistema parasito-hospedeiro em matrizes com espécies de peixes de acordo com cinco níveis tróficos. Foram usados parâmetros de infecção parasitária (prevalência, intensidade e abundância), conforme os dados disponíveis para peixes hospedeiros com diferentes histórias de vida e distribuição geográfica em diferentes bacias do Brasil. Procamallanus (S.) inopinatus mostrou prevalência variando de baixa a moderada, baixa abundância, baixa intensidade, dispersão tipicamente agregada e infecção preferencial pelo trato gastrointestinal dos hospedeiros. Houve diferença na prevalência entre hospedeiros detritívoro, onívoro, carnívoro e piscívoro, mas não foram encontradas diferenças na intensidade e abundância de P. (S.) inopinatus, devido a uma similaridade na comunidade desse endoparasito entre os hospedeiros. Esse parasito tem distribuição geográfica nos sistemas das bacias do Rio Amazonas, Rio Paraná, Rio São Francisco, Atlântico Norte, Atlântico Sul e Leste, e esses achados foram discutidos. Por fim, o ciclo de vida de P. (S.) inopinatus, com potenciais hospedeiros intermediários, foi finalmente sugerido e discutido.

Background. Automated processing of the fish caught on board a ship can potentially lead to a quality control breach. Specimens visibly infected with parasites are processed, frozen, and directed to the market. On the other hand, the removal of the body elements of taxonomic importance (e.g., fins, head, skin) opens gates to variously motivated seafood frauds. We had been alerted by local veterinary authorities about a fish consignment from the Falklands with a substantial volume of muscles with black contents. Materials and methods. The material for the presently reported study were decapitated, finless, and gutted fish delivered to our lab by the County Veterinarian of Szczecin (Purchased by a local importer from a Spanish fish wholesaler). The fish were labeled as “Pseudophycis bachus (Forster, 1801)”, and allegedly came from the Falklands. After thawing, the fish muscles were dissected, focusing on the distinctly black areas, examined following methods commonly used in parasitology, and observed under a dissecting and a compound microscope. Samples were collected also for molecular studies aiming to disclose the fish taxonomic identity. DNA barcoding gene (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, COX1) was used to perform the genetic characterization for the collected fish specimens. The degree of similarity between the new records (MT318699 and MT318700) and the other records of Moridae species in the GenBank was assessed by building COX1 gene phylogeny. Results. The muscles contained large galls filled with black fluid. The fluid stained the adjacent muscles. Inside each gall, we found a single female of Sarcotaces sp., several “dwarf” males, eggs, and newly hatched nauplius stages. Using the molecular methods, the fish were identified as Mora moro (Risso, 1810). Conclusion. A preliminary veterinary inspection of the catch on board of fishing vessels may help to avoid huge financial losses when a parasitized fish consignment is rejected by veterinary authorities on land. It is evident that the European regulation regarding fish parasites requires an urgent revision. Mora moro does not occur off the Falklands as declared by the wholesaler. This seafood fraud was probably motivated by the urge to conceal a catch from European waters and thus avoid exceeding national fishing quotas. Species of the genus Sarcotaces require a revision backed by molecular methods.

Introduction: Joturus pichardi is an important migratory species that inhabits the rivers of the Atlantic zone of Costa Rica and has been little studied. Objective: To describe the diet and reproduction of J. pichardi and its relationship with environmental factors in the Pacuare River basin. Methods: Sixteen sampling sites were selected along the main channel or Pacuare River. The samplings were performed from October 2015 to October 2016. The gonads, stomach, and intestines of seven individuals of J. pichardi were analyzed. The relationship of J. pichardi between the physicochemical variables of the water and the structure of the habitat was analyzed. Results: Twenty individuals were collected at an elevation of 225-235masl. The occurrence of J. pichardi was related to sites with higher river velocity, high values of dissolved oxygen, rock substrate and forest land use. All the individuals analyzed had visceral fat and endoparasites in the stomach. Bryophytes, ferns, macroinvertebrates, and detritus were identified as part of the diet of J. pichardi. According to the analysis of gonads in adults, the individuals were identified in the gonadal state types I, II and V. Conclusions: Our results suggest J. pichardi is an omnivorous species associated with sites with rocks, rapids, well-oxygenated waters, and forest land use. Also, the analysis of gonads coincides with the known reproduction period of the species. Finally, individuals of Neoechinorhynchus spp. are recorded for the first time in stomachs of J. pichardi in Costa Rica. Resumen “Alimentación y reproducción de Joturus pichardi (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) en la cuenca del Río Pacuare, Costa Rica”. Introducción: Joturus pichardi es una importante especie migratoria que habita en los ríos de la zona Atlántica de Costa Rica y ha sido poco estudiada. Objetivo: Describir la dieta y reproducción de J. pichardi y su relación con factores ambientales en la cuenca del Río Pacuare. Métodos: Se seleccionaron 16 sitios de muestreo a lo largo del canal principal. Los muestreos se realizaron de octubre de 2015 a octubre de 2016. Se analizaron gónadas, estómago e intestinos de siete individuos de J. pichardi. Se analizó la relación de J. pichardi entre las variables fisicoquímicas del agua y la estructura del hábitat. Resultados: Veinte individuos fueron recolectados a una elevación de 225-235msnm. La presencia de J. pichardi se relacionó con sitios con mayor velocidad del río, altos valores de oxígeno disuelto, sustrato de roca y uso de suelo forestal. Todos los individuos analizados tenían grasa visceral y endoparásitos en el estómago. Se identificaron briófitos, helechos, macroinvertebrados y detritos como parte de la dieta de J. pichardi. Según el análisis de las gónadas en adultos, los individuos fueron identificados en el estado gonadal tipos I, II y V. Conclusiones: Nuestros resultados sugieren que J. pichardi es una especie omnívora asociada con sitios con rocas, rápidos, aguas bien oxigenadas y uso de suelo forestal. Además, el análisis de gónadas coincide con el período de reproducción conocido de la especie. Finalmente, individuos de Neoechinorhynchus spp. se registran por primera vez en estómagos de J. pichardi en Costa Rica.

Virus domestication in endoparasitic wasps: the example of ichneumonid wasps. Jacques Monod Conference "Virus evolution on the mutualist - parasite continuum"

Although many studies on the frequency of endoparasites in dogs and cats in Canada have been reported, seasonal and/or annual patterns are often not evaluated. The frequency and risk factors of endoparasite infections from fecal samples of cats and dogs submitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island-Canada were determined, using univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses. Investigated predictors of endoparasitism available in the 2000–2017 database included sex, age, geographic origin and seasonality. A total of 15,016 dogs and 2,391 cats were evaluated for endoparasite status using specific diagnostic tests: direct smear, Baermann, and/or 33 % zinc sulfate solution in a standardized centrifugal flotation method. Overall, twelve and eight parasite genera were detected in dogs and cats, respectively. The overall proportional infection was 14.6 %, and the cat population showed a higher frequency of positivity to parasites compared to the dog population (P < 0.001). The most frequent genera recovered in the whole population (dogs and cats), were Giardia duodenalis (5.2 %), Cystoisospora spp. (3.3 %) and Toxocara spp. (3.2 %). Endoparasitism levels were diagnosed more in feces submitted from young, female intact dogs from PEI compared to the baselines of mature, sterilized male dogs from other provinces, respectively, and diagnoses occurred more often in autumn months than in winter months. There was no significant diagnostic trend across the years for the individual parasites models. The frequency of detected potentially zoonotic parasites in this study highlights the veterinary public health and One Health context of parasitic infections in pets. Although the presented results are not from a random sample and therefore frequency results should be interpreted with caution, the model relationship results may still be relevant. In addition, results are of value to estimate parasite impact and to assist researchers, veterinarians and pet-owners with suitable information to control parasites.

Este artículo contiene 11 páginas, 4 figuras, 1 tabla., A mass mortality event is devastating the populations of the endemic bivalve Pinna nobilis in the Mediterranean Sea from early autumn 2016. A newly described Haplosporidian endoparasite (Haplosporidium pinnae) is the most probable cause of this ecological catastrophe placing one of the largest bivalves of the world on the brink of extinction. As a pivotal step towards Pinna nobilis conservation, this contribution combines scientists and citizens’ data to address the fast- and vastdispersion and prevalence outbreaks of the pathogen. Therefore, the potential role of currents on parasite expansion was addressed by means of drift simulations of virtual particles in a high-resolution regional currents model. A generalized additive model was implemented to test if environmental factors could modulate the infection of Pinna nobilis populations. The results strongly suggest that the parasite has probably dispersed regionally by surface currents, and that the disease expression seems to be closely related to temperatures above 13.5 °C and to a salinity range between 36.5–39.7 psu. Nasal mites (Mesostigmata: Rhinonyssidae) are obligatory endoparasites of birds, and the resulting parasitism can be harmful to the host’s respiratory system. The nasal mite Sternostoma tracheacolum Lawrence has caused significant respiratory issues, including serious injuries that possibly cause death of the host. In this study, we report two cases of captive birds parasitized by S. tracheacolum. The first case is a histopathological description of S. tracheacolum parasitizing the Gouldian Finch (Chloebia gouldiae) in the southeast region of Brazil, that showed partially or totally absence of the characteristic respiratory epithelium in trachea lumen. The other describes, for the first time, the parasitism of this species in a canary (Serinus canaria) in the northeast region of the country. Resumo Os ácaros nasais (Mesostigmata: Rhinonyssidae) são endoparasitos obrigatórios das aves, e este parasitismo pode ser prejudicial ao sistema respiratório de seu hospedeiro. A espécie de ácaro nasal Sternostoma tracheacolum Lawrence tem causado importantes problemas respiratórios, incluindo lesões graves que possivelmente causam a morte do hospedeiro. Neste estudo, relatamos dois casos de aves em cativeiro parasitadas por S. tracheacolum. O primeiro caso é uma descrição histopatológica de S. tracheacolum parasitando um Diamante-de-gould (Chloebia gouldiae) na região sudeste do Brasil, mostrando parcial ou total ausência do epitélio respiratório característico do lúmen da traqueia. O outro descreve, pela primeira vez, o parasitismo desta espécie em um canário (Serinus canaria) na região nordeste do país.

Parasites are ubiquitous in the environment, and can cause negative effects in their host species. Importantly, seabirds can be long-lived and cross multiple continents within a single annual cycle, thus their exposure to parasites may be greater than other taxa. With changing climatic conditions expected to influence parasite distribution and abundance, understanding current level of infection, transmission pathways and population-level impacts are integral aspects for predicting ecosystem changes, and how climate change will affect seabird species. In particular, a range of micro- and macro-parasites can affect seabird species, including ticks, mites, helminths, viruses and bacteria in gulls, terns, skimmers, skuas, auks and selected phalaropes (Charadriiformes), tropicbirds (Phaethontiformes), penguins (Sphenisciformes), tubenoses (Procellariiformes), cormorants, frigatebirds, boobies, gannets (Suliformes), and pelicans (Pelecaniformes) and marine seaducks and loons (Anseriformes and Gaviiformes). We found that the seabird orders of Charadriiformes and Procellariiformes were most represented in the parasite-seabird literature. While negative effects were reported in seabirds associated with all the parasite groups, most effects have been studied in adults with less information known about how parasites may affect chicks and fledglings. We found studies most often reported on negative effects in seabird hosts during the breeding season, although this is also the time when most seabird research occurs. Many studies report that external factors such as condition of the host, pollution, and environmental conditions can influence the effects of parasites, thus cumulative effects likely play a large role in how parasites influence seabirds at both the individual and population level. With an increased understanding of parasite-host dynamics it is clear that major environmental changes, often those associated with human activities, can directly or indirectly affect the distribution, abundance, or virulence of parasites and pathogens.

Dendrorchis retrobiloba Volonterio & Ponce de León, 2005 was first described from the swim bladder of Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) from Montevideo, Uruguay. In this study, we necropsied specimens of A. aff. fasciatus collected from Lake Guaíba, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, for the analysis of their helminths. The digeneans were identified as D. retrobiloba by their elongated body, oral sucker longer than ventral sucker, and 2 posterior lobes. This is the first report of D. retrobiloba in A. aff. fasciatus from Lake Guaíba and extends the known geographic distribution of this parasite.

This study was conducted in the country of Zambia, Southern Africa, to investigate the occurrence of endo-parasites in indigenous Zambian dogs. Faecal samples were collected from 41 indigenous Zambian dogs from different areas of the Mbabala region in the Southern province of Zambia during the “hot wet” season, although at the time that the samples were collected, the country was experiencing a drought. Faecal samples were analysed using the concentration flotation method with zinc sulphate for the determination of the presence of gastrointestinal parasites. The most prevalent parasites were species from the family Ancylostomatidae (65.0 % infection rate) which followed by: Isospora canis (9.8 %), Dipylidium caninum (4.8 %), and Toxascaris leonina (2.4 %). There were in addition, two cases of co-infections with the family Ancylostomatidae and D. caninum, as well as the family Ancylostomatidae and I. canis.

Many global infectious diseases are not well-controlled, underlining a critical need for new, more effective therapies. Pathogens and pathogen-infected host cells, like cancer cells, evade immune surveillance via immune evasion mechanisms. The present study indicates that pathogenic bacteria, endoparasites, and virus-infected host cells can have immune evasion mechanisms in common with cancers. These include entry into dormancy and metabolic reprogramming to aerobic glycolysis leading to excessive secretion of lactic acid and immobilization of local host immunity. The latter evasion tactic provides a therapeutic target for cancer, as shown by our recent finding that patient-derived cancer xenografts can be growth-arrested, without major host toxicity, by inhibiting their lactic acid secretion (as mediated by the MCT4 transporter)-with evidence of host immunity restoration. Accordingly, the multiplication of bacteria, endoparasites, and viruses that primarily depend on metabolic reprogramming to aerobic glycolysis for survival may be arrested using cancer treatment strategies that inhibit their lactic acid secretion. Immune evasion mechanisms shared by pathogens and cancer cells likely represent fundamental, evolutionarily-conserved mechanisms that may be particularly critical to their welfare. As such, their targeting may lead to novel therapies for infectious diseases.

Angiostrongylus vasorum has spread farther north in Europe. In this study, two autochthonous findings from dogs from Finland are described: In February 2014, the infection was diagnosed in a 10-month-old labrador retriever, and in February 2017, in a three-year-old French bulldog. These diagnoses were based on direct detection of the larvae from faeces of the dogs. The dogs had no history of travel to or import from abroad; the first lived in Southern Finland and the other in Western Finland, about 150 km apart. The dogs had no clinical signs attributable to angiostrongylosis. An online questionnaire was used to survey the extent to which veterinarians in Finland have self-reportedly observed canine A vasorum infections. A total of 38 veterinarians authorised to work in Finland answered the questionnaire in December 2017, and 9 (24%) of them reported having seen one or more dogs with A vasorum infection in Finland. The results suggest that at least five individual dogs with A vasorum infection would have been seen in Finland, three of which had an apparently autochthonous infection. While the geographical distribution of A vasorum in Finland remains largely unknown, findings have started to appear from domestic dogs. It remains possible that some veterinarians could have misdiagnosed, for example, Crenosoma vulpis larvae as those of A vasorum, and the findings without confirmation using antigen test could be due to coprophagy and passage of ingested larvae; however, this does not change the main conclusion that can be made: A vasorum is already multifocally present in Finland. Increasing awareness about A vasorum is important in areas where it is emerging and spreading. © 2019 British Veterinary Association.

Eighteen three-month-old Santa Ines castrated male lambs (16.9 ± 1.43 kg of body weight) were randomly distributed in two experimental treatments: Infected with T. colubriformis (I, n = 9) and Uninfected (U, n = 9). The I lambs received a total of 45,000 L3 larvae of T. colubriformis (5,000 infective larvae, three times per week for three weeks). Daily feed intake was assessed using the I lambs as a reference for their respective pairs on the U group (pair-fed). Weight, body condition score and faeces (stool) samples were obtained every 15 days for 75 days. In both treatments, faecal egg count (FEC), digesta passage rate, rumen fermentation parameters, protozoa count and short chain fatty acids (SCFA) were evaluated. The lambs presented moderate infection (FEC = 620). The retention time of the digesta in the rumen-reticulum segment was lower (P < 0.05) in I lambs. The I lambs presented no inappetence, however, lower concentrations of total SCFA and butyrate, while higher acetate concentration were observed in these lambs (P < 0.05). The present findings highlight that T. colubriformis infection decreased the retention time (solid and liquid content) of the digesta in the rumen-reticulum, as well as negatively affected lamb growth. The acanthocephalan species Quadrigyrus torquatus Van Cleave, 1920 has been found in different hosts from South America, but recent papers have not focused on its morphology traits. Different species of Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 were collected with seine nets between January 2017 and October 2017 in Pintada Island, Lake Guaíba, Porto Alegre city (30º17’11’’S and 51º18’01”W), Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Acanthocephalans found in cysts were processed according to the techniques for the group. Specimens of Q. torquatus were identified based mainly in the morphology of proboscis hooks and trunk spines, and by the measurements made using light microscopy. Supplemental observations on the morphology of Q. torquatus were made for the first time considering the morphology and amount of hooks and spines. The amplitude of intensity of infections was 1 (A. aff. fasciatus) and 1‒3 (A. lacustris) helminths. This difference could be related to the number of hosts examined, the feeding habit of the hosts or related to aspects in the parasite life cycle. This paper is the first report of Q. torquatus in A. aff. fasciatus and A. lacustris from Lake Guaíba, extending the distribution to the southernmost state of Brazil, thus contributing to the knowledge of acanthocephalans in freshwater fishes from South America. Resumo: A espécie de acantocéfalo Quadrigyrus torquatus Van Cleave, 1920, tem sido encontrada em diferentes hospedeiros na América do Sul, contudo os estudos recentes não focam no estudo dos caracteres morfológicos. Diferentes espécies de Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 foram coletadas com redes do tipo picaré entre janeiro e outubro de 2017, na Ilha da Pintada, Lago Guaíba, Cidade de Porto Alegre (30º17’11’’S e 51º18’01”W), Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Os acantocéfalos encontrados encistados foram processados de acordo com as técnicas para o grupo. Os espécimes de Q. torquatus foram identificados principalmente pela morfologia dos ganchos da probóscide, espinhos do tronco e, pelas medidas realizadas através de microscopia de luz. Observações suplementares na morfologia de Q. torquatus foram realizadas pela primeira vez, considerando a morfologia e o número de ganchos e espinhos. A amplitude das infecções foi 1 (A. aff. fasciatus) e 1‒3 (A. lacustris) helmintos. Esta diferença pode estar associada com o número de hospedeiros examinados, com os hábitos alimentares dos hospedeiros, ou relacionada com aspectos no ciclo de vida do parasito. Este estudo é o primeiro registro de Q. torquatus em A. aff. fasciatus e A. lacustris do Lago Guaíba, estendendo a distribuição do parasito para o sul do Brasil, contribuindo com o conhecimento dos acantocéfalos parasitos de peixes de água doce na América do Sul.

Diplotriaena delirae Pinto & Noronha, 1970 is known to parasitize Pitangus sulphuratus (Linnaeus, 1766) in Peru and in the Midwestern and Southeastern regions of Brazil. Here, specimens of P. sulphuratus were collected in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and necropsied. Nematodes (n = 6) found in these specimens were identified as D. delirae based on their morphological traits. This is the first report of D. delirae from southern Brazil, expanding the knowledge of the helminth fauna of P. sulphuratus in the Neotropical region.

This study was a preliminary survey for identification of parasites (endoparasites and ectoparasites) and their prevalence in domestic pigeons (Columba livia) in Tripoli; Libya. One hundred adult domestic pigeons were purchased from different markets of Tripoli. Blood smears were prepared from each bird and examined using light microscopy with oil immersion lens for the presence of blood parasites. Oropharyngeal swab was taken from each pigeon and were processed through direct smear method and staining with Giemsa to identify Trichomonas gallinae. Each pigeon was examined for ectoparasites. Moreover, intestinal parasites were investigated and all helminths were counted before being fixed in 70% ethyl alcohol for further identification. Out of 100 pigeons examined, 76% (76/100) were infected with Haemoproteus spp. and 55% (55/100) with T. gallinae. The overall prevalence of ecto–parasitic infestation was 89% (82% Columbicloa columbae, 18% Goniodes gallinae, 3% Menopon gallinae and 1% Pseudolynchia canariensis). The overall prevalence of intestinal helminths in examined pigeons were 56% (56/100). Three species of Cestoda (2% Raillietina tetragona, 32% R. echinobothrida and 4% R. cesticillus) and three species of Nematoda (18% Heterakis gallinarum., 22% Ascaridia galli and 4% Capillaria spp.) were identified. Also, this study revealed that the pigeons examined were found infected with mixed parasites. The study highlights that pigeons are hosts of helminths of veterinary importance and may act as an important source of infection for other avian host, which share the common parasitic fauna.

The 23 species of mycoheterotrophic or exoparasitic land plants (from 15 genera and 6 families) studied so far all retain a minimal set of 17 of the normally 116 plastome genes. Only Rafflesia lagascae, an endoparasite concealed in its host except when flowering, has been reported as perhaps lacking a plastome, although it still possesses plastid-like compartments. We analyzed two other endoparasites, the African Apodanthaceae Pilostyles aethiopica and the Australian Pilostyles hamiltonii, both living inside Fabaceae. Illumina and 454 data and Sanger resequencing yielded circularized plastomes of 11,348 and 15,167 bp length, with both species containing five possibly functional genes (accD, rps3, rps4, rrn16, rrn23) and two/three pseudogenes (rpoC2 in P. aethiopica and rpl2 and rps12 in both species; rps12 may be functional in P. hamiltonii). Previously known smallest land plant plastomes contain 27-29 genes, making these Apodanthaceae plastomes the most reduced in size and gene content. A similar extent of divergence might have caused the plastome of Rafflesia to escape detection. The higher plastome degeneration in both these families of endoparasites, Rafflesiaceae and Apodanthaceae, of similar high age, compared with exoparasites points to a difference of plastome function between those two modes of parasitic life.

Certain types of marine fish, eaten raw or undercooked, may serve as a source of human infection with these parasites., The Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus (syn. Diphyllobothrium pacificum) is the causative agent of the third most common fish-borne cestodosis among humans. Although most of the nearly 1,000 cases among humans have been reported in South America (Peru, Chile, and Ecuador), cases recently imported to Europe demonstrate the potential for spread of this tapeworm throughout the world as a result of global trade of fresh or chilled marine fish and travel or migration of humans. We provide a comprehensive survey of human cases of infection with this zoonotic parasite, summarize the history of this re-emerging disease, and identify marine fish species that may serve as a source of human infection when eaten raw or undercooked.
