How do classical texts, such as Hwangdi Neijing and Shanghanlun, continuously play significant roles in medical practices in the history of East Asian medicine? Although this is a significant question in interpreting the position of written texts in the medical history and even for understanding the structure of East Asian medical knowledge, it has been conspicuously underexamined in the studies of East Asian medicine. In order to explore this underrepresented question, this study focuses on currents of tradition in contemporary South Korea. Drawing on anthropological fieldwork at three Donguibogam (Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine) currents, it delves into the interaction of text and practice in East Asian medicine. Even though all three currents (Hyun-dong, Byeong-in, Hyung-sang) are based on Donguibogam, their ways of reading the text and organizing clinical practices are diverse. Each current sets up a keyword, such as pulse diagnosis, cause of disease, and appearance-image, and attempts to penetrate the entire Donguibogam through the keyword. This means that the classical medical text is open to plural approaches. This study found that there is a visible gap between a medical text and the reader of the text in East Asia. Masters and currents of tradition are the actors who fill up the gap, continuously interpreting and reinterpreting classical texts, and guiding medical practices of new readers. Adding the history of practice to the body of literature that have focused on the history of written texts, this study will contribute to the history of East Asian medicine.

When calculating short-circuit currents in the AC traction network, it is assumed that each of the traction substations receives power from uncoupled external power supply sources with known resistances. In some cases, especially when powering a group of traction substations from a high-voltage power line of a longitudinal power supply, the external power supply system affects not only the magnitude of short-circuit currents, but also their redistribution between adjacent traction substations of the interstation area where this circuit is considered. Such unrecorded redistribution can have a negative effect on short circuit protection. The article considers the equivalent circuit of the traction network, taking into account resistance of the external power supply system. Particular attention is paid to the fact that in replacement circuits of direct and negative sequence value of reduced resistance of one phase of a multiwinding transformer, calculated from the short circuit voltage, does not depend on the connection scheme of its windings. It is noted that in some cases it is difficult to obtain a complete scheme of an external power supply system. Considering that the short circuit in the traction network for the external power supply system is remote, it is proposed taking into account the reference network or traction substations as power sources, from which high-voltage transmission lines power the traction substations. Resistance of the supporting substations as power sources must takes into account connected equivalent power system.Such equivalenting should be carried out by known values of currents or short-circuit powers at the inputs of the reference substation or, if such information is not available, by the rated values of the switched-off currents or powers of the switches of high-voltage line connections.The following power schemes for traction substations are considered: each from its own supporting substation, which is part of an electrically uncoupled external power supply system; from the double-circuit high-voltage line of longitudinal power supply when it is powered from different supporting substations; from the supporting network substation, the traction substation receives power from two lines, and from this the traction substations receive power from two lines in a circle pattern.These three common cases cover all the most common power schemes for traction substations. For each of them formulas are given to determine the resulting equivalent resistance of the external power supply circuit, which should be taken into account in the replacement circuit of the traction network.

Eight-poles of various designs, including an eight-terminal network with three input and five output terminals, are needed to replace some power objects. Especially when only the input and output characteristics of electrical energy are of interest. The paper presents the eightterminal network equations with three input and five output terminals, establishing a connection between these characteristics. Equations of the A-form establish a connection between the input and output voltages and currents; the B-form equations establish a connection between the output and input voltages and currents; G-form equations establish a connection between the input current, output voltages and output voltage, output currents; H-form equations establish the relationship between the input voltage, output currents and output current, output voltages; the Yform equations establish a connection between the input and output currents and the input and output voltages; The Z-form equations establish the relationship between the input and output voltages and the input and output currents. When implementing these equations, attention should be paid to the difference in the directions of the currents in each individual case.

The influence of the lunar cycle on bluefin tuna foraging in the upwelling area of the Strait of Messina was investigated by exploring trophic interaction with mesopelagic fish and cephalopod prey. To focus on how the lunar cycle could affect availability of mesopelagic prey for this predator, we tested potential differences in the diet related to each lunar phase. Moreover, we considered two potential impacts of the lunar cycle: the lunar irradiance and the strength of currents. Overall, 2672 prey items were mesopelagic fish and cephalopods, representing 60.7% of overall diet by number. The main mesopelagic fish prey items were lanternfishes and dragonfishes, while Onychoteuthis banksii was the most important cephalopod prey. In summary, the Strait of Messina has highly specific hydrodynamic and biological features which strongly depend on upwelling currents, which in turn are influenced by the lunar cycle (new and full moon with strong currents, quarters with fewer currents). Upwelling causes water mixing, bringing to the surface a large amount of mesopelagic fauna which become more readily available to tuna. Lunar irradiance contributes to the variation of prey composition, increasing the success of visual predation on mesopelagic resources at high light in the water column.

The world’s largest living glass sponge reefs, located in the Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound off British Columbia, are impacted by bottom contact fishing gear. The existing Adaptive Management Zones (AMZs) for the protection of these reefs were determined by considering the potential exposure of glass sponges to suspended sediment due to mobile bottom-contact fishing, but without considering their pumping arrest threshold concentrations. Here, we develop a new method that uses a sediment transport model under horizontally variable near-bottom currents and newly available sponge reef pumping arrest thresholds to determine the size and shape of AMZ for the northern reefs in the Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound Marine Protected Area. The resulting AMZ is larger than the existing AMZ due to the observation that the largest currents are not always in the direction of the dominant tidal flows, the introduction of the new pumping arrest threshold, and the inclusion of a background sediment concentration. The new AMZ boundary could provide more adequate protection for the glass sponge reefs from the effects of sedimentation induced by mobile, bottom-contact fishing activity. The new method is applicable to other glass sponge reefs in British Columbia waters.

This paper aims to define and study currents and slices of currents in the Heisenberg group H n . Currents, depending on their integration properties and on those of their boundaries, can be classified into subspaces and, assuming their support to be compact, we can work with currents of finite mass, define the notion of slices of Heisenberg currents and show some important properties for them. While some such properties are similarly true in Riemannian settings, others carry deep consequences because they do not include the slices of the middle dimension n, which opens new challenges and scenarios for the possibility of developing a compactness theorem. Furthermore, this suggests that the study of currents on the first Heisenberg group H 1 diverges from the other cases, because that is the only situation in which the dimension of the slice of a hypersurface, 2 n - 1 , coincides with the middle dimension n, which triggers a change in the associated differential operator in the Rumin complex. Arctic Ocean surface circulation change should not be viewed as the strength of the anticyclonic Beaufort Gyre. While the Beaufort Gyre is a dominant feature of average Arctic Ocean surface circulation, empirical orthogonal function analysis of dynamic height (1950–89) and satellite altimetry–derived dynamic ocean topography (2004–19) show the primary pattern of variability in its cyclonic mode is dominated by a depression of the sea surface and cyclonic surface circulation on the Russian side of the Arctic Ocean. Changes in surface circulation after Arctic Oscillation (AO) maxima in 1989 and 2007–08 and after an AO minimum in 2010 indicate the cyclonic mode is forced by the AO with a lag of about 1 year. Associated with a one standard deviation increase in the average AO starting in the early 1990s, Arctic Ocean surface circulation underwent a cyclonic shift evidenced by increased spatial-average vorticity. Under increased AO, the cyclonic mode complex also includes increased export of sea ice and near-surface freshwater, a changed path of Eurasian runoff, a freshened Beaufort Sea, and weakened cold halocline layer that insulates sea ice from Atlantic water heat, an impact compounded by increased Atlantic Water inflow and cyclonic circulation at depth. The cyclonic mode's connection with the AO is important because the AO is a major global scale climate index predicted to increase with global warming. Given the present bias in concentration of in situ measurements in the Beaufort Gyre and Transpolar Drift, a coordinated effort should be made to better observe the cyclonic mode. Pressure anomaly set by the open ocean affects the dynamic topography and associated circulation over the continental shelf, which is explored here on a linearized β-plane arrested topographic wave framework that considers the variation in Coriolis parameter with latitude. It was found that on a meridional shelf, a nondimensional parameter Peβ, termed the β Péclet number, signifies the characteristics of open ocean–shelf interaction. The Peβ ≡ Dβ/α is determined by the ratio of long-wave-limit planetary to topographic Rossby wave speeds, i.e., the β drift Dβ, and the linear Ekman number α. On the western boundary shelf, due to the westward planetary Rossby wave, open ocean pressure propagates shoreward as Peβ > 1, and shelf circulation peaks where Peβ drops to 1. At this location, the planetary β effect is balanced by the bottom friction. The Peβ = 1 must occur either on the shelf or on the coastal wall when Peβ > 1 is observed at the shelf edge. On the eastern boundary shelf, however, Peβ < 0, the pressure anomaly is removed from the shelf, and hence the inductive circulation decays rapidly from the shelf edge. This β effect is robust on gently sloping meridional shelves. For zonal shelves, the planetary β increases the effective bottom slope on the northern boundary shelf but decreases it on the southern one, in a sense of potential vorticity conservation. However, this effect could be less significant in reality, given the complex dynamics involved. An optimal model-free controller and a linear controller are designed and applied to a horizontal magnetic micromanipulator for controlling microparticles in a liquid environment. An input-output relation based model for the magnetic micromanipulator is obtained, verified, and used in the analysis of controllers. A model-free linear controller is designed using the offset current approach. An optimal nonlinear controller based on Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions is designed and then modified to produce smooth control signals. Experimental results are provided to show the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed controllers. We present hindcasts of currents in Cook Strait from a baroclinic, tide-resolving ocean model. Three hindcasts are run, forced respectively at the lateral boundaries with data from the Bluelink Reanalysis (BRAN), the global Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) and a New Zealand Shelf Seas baroclinic hindcast (NZROMS). The hindcast forced by BRAN is evaluated against measured currents at locations in the Cook Strait Narrows and South Taranaki Bight. The model reproduces the observed tidal, subtidal and mean currents well. The three hindcasts produce a 3-year-mean volume flux southward through the Narrows of 0.360, 0.734 and 0.230 Sv, respectively. When corrected for the observed discrepancies between model and measurements in the Narrows, the estimates are 0.430, 0.498 and 0.337 Sv. We conclude that true 3-year mean volume flux through Cook Strait is 0.42 ± 0.08 Sv. The tidal volume flux amplitude is 4.68 Sv (M2). The subtidal fluctuations in volume flux have a standard deviation of 0.62 Sv. The effect of wind is investigated with a wind-forced barotropic model, which produces volume flux fluctuations that are highly correlated (r = 0.93) with the subtidal fluctuations from the baroclinic model, implying that the latter are largely wind-generated. The shelf seas surrounding New Zealand/Aotearoa, a region nominally extending out to the 250 m depth contour, are complex and varied as they sit above the submerged continent of Zealandia. These seas surround the two main islands that span 1,500 km in latitude from 34°S to 47°S and include a series of plateaus that extend far beyond. This review summarises the present state of knowledge of the physical processes that control ocean transport and mixing in this domain. The focus is on documenting recent regional advances in understanding the balance between off-shelf drivers, terrestrially sourced freshwater, winds, tides, stratification and the underlying topography. The review considers outstanding themes such as connectivity, climate and stratification and closes with an assessment of the potential future for understanding the physical marine environment of the shelf seas of the New Zealand region. This paper discusses the conditions of sediment accumulation in the access channel and deep-water area around the "Utrennii" terminal. The main factor of the sediment accumulation in the access channel is the movement of silt sediments by the tidal currents and extreme storm waves.
