This study explores the realm of book reviews within medical history journals, an area often overlooked in the existing literature. By scrutinizing four prominent journals over a five-year period, encompassing 780 book reviews, this research elucidates prevalent trends and patterns. Findings reveal disparities in review volume and author demographics, underscored by English-language dominance. Challenges such as limited word counts and evaluation dynamics emerge as impediments to review quality. Proposed enhancements include relaxing word limits, conducting reader surveys, and fostering access to non-English literature. These strategies aim to invigorate scholarly discourse, enriching the landscape of medical history research.

Marlis Prinzing und Roger Blum haben das «Handbuch Politischer Journalismus» herausgegeben, weil es bisher keine vergleichbare Publikation gab, obwohl der politische Journalismus ein zentrales Feld der Berichterstattung ist. Das Handbuch versteht sich als Brücke zwischen aktueller Forschung und Praxis. Es enthält Beiträge aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und gibt länderübergreifende Einblicke in die vielfältigen Arbeitsfelder des politischen Journalismus – mit Schwerpunkten auf Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Diese Zusammenführung unterschiedlicher Perspektiven verdeutlicht den integrativen Anspruch des 900 Seiten starken Werks. Es hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, «den politischen Journalismus in modernen […] europäischen […] Demokratien einmal gesamthaft darzustellen» (S. 17). Dies war, wie Prinzing und Blum in ihrer Einleitung einräumen, ein arbeitsintensives Unterfangen, das sich aber – wie der Erfolg zeigt – gelohnt hat. Das Handbuch gewinnt sein Publikum in der Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft, in der Medienpraxis und Politik, in der PR- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit sowie in der Verwaltung und den Staatskanzleien. Gianluigi Negro’s Le voci di Pechino: Come i media hanno costruito l’identità cinese (Beijing’s voices: How the media constructed Chinese identity) presents a much welcome intervention at the intersection of Sinology and Media Studies from a historiographical perspective. By tracking the diachronic shifts and continuities across different communication technologies, practices and policies in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the book develops a systematic understanding of the role of media in the construction of modern Chinese national identity. In doing so, it offers a valuable conceptual map for keeping track of the different actors and tensions that have shaped the Chinese media landscape from the rooftop loudspeakers of the Mao era to the Web 2.0 of today.

Gendered institutions in this book are described as social structures, norms, and practices that maintain gender inequalities and stereotypes, often to the advantage of men. Many political systems in Africa are patriarchal, with traditional leadership structures dominated by men. The book highlights the formal and informal political institutions that make it difficult for African women to gain access to political power or to have their voices heard within the African political establishment. Additionally, many of the rules and customs of African political institutions are biased against women and sometimes require candidates to have a certain level of education or financial autonomy that may be more difficult for women to attain. These gendered institutions have contributed to the under-representation of African women in politics. While there has been progress in recent years, women remain significantly underrepresented in African decision-making bodies such as African National Parliaments. This book has eight chapters, with each chapter representing a unique case study of a country in Africa. The eight African countries that the book focuses on are South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and Botswana.

Discourses, Identities and Investment in Foreign Language Learning is the result of what was started as a PhD thesis by Jennifer Martyn and has resulted in a 164-page rich monograph on identity for foreign language learners at secondary level in Ireland from a post-structural perspective. The monograph seeks to examine the connections between foreign language learners, the Irish schooling system (and its related-practices and context), and how learners speak about their language learning experience, and thus construct their identities. To do so, the researcher has conducted an ethnographic study in one secondary school in county Galway in the West of Ireland through the use of observations and semi-structured interviews with learners and semi-structured interviews with one foreign language teacher.

In a new book, Alexander Tobón Arias answers that question (I’ll come back to this at the end) as he presents and attempts to promote the history of economic theory. The author was motivated to write this book by a “growing contempt of many economists for economic theory” in favor of applied economics. The synthesis he proposes aims to shed light on theoretical economics.

The Improvement Science in Education series, initiated in 2019 by Robert Crow, Brandi Nicole Hinnant-Crawford, and Dean T. Spaulding, seeks to broaden and strengthen the understanding and use of improvement science in education. In this study, we examine the book written by Reyhan Keleş, which is about the mi'raj (works dealing with the ascension of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the heavens). Mi'rajiyyas are among the religious genres within the scope of Turkish Islamic literature. Although Turkish Islamic literature is a vast field of study, the author restricts her study to diwan poetry (Ottoman Poetry) and eulogy poetry. The subject of mi'raj (ascension) has been written in several types of poetry and even prose works, and the author's focus and investigation on it both as a religious-literary genre and eulogy poetry enables a thorough investigation of the entire topic. This paper intends to serve multiple purposes. Although the paper is mainly a review of the book titled Provincial Universities: AK Party's Back Campus, it aims to make a small contribution to the relevant parties to seriously consider the different dimensions of the problematics of quality vs quantity. On the other hand, the intention to show that book reviews are not just a type of publication in which the contents of the books are conveyed to the reader has led to the emergence of this text. In this context, creating a course material on book reviews for the course called Scholarly Communication, which it has been taught at undergraduate and graduate levels for many years, is among the motivations of the paper. This article is a review of a book that presents a detailed and thorough analysis of women’s legal status in the Islamic legal system. The book consists of six chapters that include a historical overview of women who held power in Islam, classical and contemporary sources of Islamic law, women’s legal status, and measures taken by male-dominated societies to circumvent or restrict women’s rights. The author’s arguments are based on the position of women in the Islamic legal system, in the light of the sources of Islamic law and Islamic traditions. The book is a valuable resource for scholars, students, and activists interested in understanding women's legal status in Muslim societies. The author argues that it is not Islamic law per se but rather the juristic interpretations that cause the inequalities faced by women. The author suggests revisiting laws, policies, and practices to strengthen the legal status of women by incorporating human values such as human dignity, fairness, and justice, as laid in the Quran, as the jus divinum for any law affecting women as a class. Проводится сравнительный анализ школьных сочинений на тему «Отзыв о прочитанной книге», написанных шестиклассниками в 1985 г., 2005 г. и 2022 г. Для анализа были взяты сочинения учеников МБОУ СОШ № 88 г. Северска, МАОУ СОШ № 36 и МБОУ СОШ № 49 г. Томска. Сравнительный анализ сочинений демонстрирует, как менялись читательские предпочтения советских школьников (поколение Х), подростков поколения нулевых (Y) и современного поколения (Z), а также показывает сформированность у школьников текстовой компетенции. Представлены выводы относительно перспективы работы с подростками на уроках литературы.

Objective: The purpose of this study was analytical review of the book Designing the Digital Library, written by Mehdi Alipoor-Hafezi and published by SAMT in 2019 based on the criteria and standards of the university textbooks. The type of research was applied in terms of purpose. As regarded method, it was a mixed-method approach. The analysis, review and extraction of required data have been simultaneous. The checklist was used for assessing formal writing structure and content features on a Likert-type 5-pointed scale. Author's expertise in the field can be mentioned as the main advantage of the book. The textbook is the only work in Persian in the field of designing digital libraries. A separate chapter on legal issues in digital libraries can also be considered as another positive point of this work. At the same time, this work has also notable points for improvement, the most important of which are writing points. In general, the work in hand in terms of evaluation of formal writing structure and content criteria received scores of 46, 46, 63 and 63, respectively and achieved at least 70 percentage points, passing as a book appealing to its audience. In spite of some defects and weaknesses, the studied textbook is one of few books on designing digital libraries and suitable for students and audience.
