Objective To investigate the effect of miR-1908 on apoptosis of human retinal vascular endothelial cells (HRECs) induced by high glucose concentration and its molecular mechanism. Methods HRECs cells were cultured and divided into normal group and high glucose group. The expression of miR-1908 was detected by RT-qPCR. miR-1908 mimics or small interfering RNA of ILK was transfected into HRECs cells, the expression miR-1908 and ILK protein was detected by RT-qPCR and Western blot in order to detect the transfection efficiency, respectively. Then high concentration of glucose was used to interfere with HRECs with miR-1908 over-expressed or ILK expression inhibited. Apoptosis rate was detected by flow cytometry, Bcl-2 and Bax protein expression was detected by Western blot. The dual luciferase reporter gene assay validated the relationship between miR-1908 and ILK. Results Compared with the control group, the expression level of miR-1908 in HRECs of high glucose group was significantly decreased (P＜0.05). miR-1908 over-expressed of or ILK expression decreased the apoptosis rate of HRECs induced by high concentration of glucose (P＜0.05), up-regulated Bcl-2 protein expression (P＜0.05), and down-regulated Bax protein expression (P＜0.05). miR-1908 negatively regulated ILK expression, and over-expression of ILK partially reversed the effect of miR-1908 on apoptosis rate, Bcl-2 and Bax protein expression in HRECs. Conclusions miR-1908 up-regulates the expression of Bcl-2 protein and down-regulates the expression of Bax protein to inhibit the apoptosis of HRECs via negatively regulating ILK expression.

Abstract Background Auxin may have a positive effect on plants under drought stress. White clover is widely cultivated and often prone to water shortages. In the present study, we investigated the effects of exogenous indole − 3-acetic acid (IAA) on growth and physiological changes of white clover under drought stress condition. The contents of endogenous IAA and other hormones including ABA, CTK, JA, GA, IAA, and SA were assayed. Moreover, expressions of auxin-responsive genes, drought-responsive genes and leaf senescence-associated genes were detected in response to exogenous IAA. Results Compared to control, drought stress alone significantly diminished stem dry weigh, relative water content (RWC) and total chlorophyll content (Chl). Exogenous IAA treatment significantly increased RWC and Chl, whereas L-AOPP treatment drastically decreased stem dry weight, RWC and Chl under drought stress condition. Additionally, exogenous IAA treatment significantly increased ABA content and JA content, up-regulated expression of auxin responsive genes (GH3.1, GH3.9, IAA8), drought stress responsive genes (bZIP11, DREB2, MYB14, MYB48, WRKY2, WRKY56, WRKY108715 and RD22), and down-regulated expressions of auxin-responding genes (GH3.3, GH3.6, IAA27) and leaf senescence genes (SAG101 and SAG102) in the presence of PEG. Contrarily, L-AOPP treatment significantly reduced contents of ABA, GA3 and JA, down-regulated expressions of GH3.1, GH3.9, IAA8, bZIP11, DREB2, MYB14, MYB48, WRKY2, WRKY56, WRKY108715, ERD and RD22, and up-regulated SAG101 and SAG102. Conclusions Exogenous IAA improved drought tolerance of white clover possibly due to endogenous plant hormone concentration changes and modulation of genes involving in drought stress response and leaf senescence. These results provided useful information to understand mechanisms of IAA improved drought tolerance in white clover.

Abstract Background The study aimed to investigate whether and how general and partial time intervals between processes, from human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) trigger to intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), affected the laboratory and reproductive outcomes in ICSI cycles. Methods This was a retrospective data analysis of 3602 women who underwent ICSI treatment cycles using partner or donor sperms, performed at Reproduction Medicine Center of Tongji Hospital of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan, China) between October 2016 and September 2018. The clinical pregnancy rate was the major outcome in the study. The fertilization and available embryo rates were secondary outcomes. Results Data from 3602 consecutive fresh ICSI cycles was analysed. Multivariate linear regression and logistic regression analysis of factors related to fertilization and clinical pregnancy rates showed that fertilization rate (P = 0.001) and clinical pregnancy rate (P = 0.037) were significantly associated with denudation (DN)-ICSI interval. Long DN-ICSI interval was associated with higher rate of fertilization than short DN-ICSI interval but significantly decreased clinical pregnancy rate when the interval is over 4 h (P

Small molecules, including H2O2 and Ca, mediate stress signaling and drought tolerance in plants. The objective of this study was to determine whether improvement in drought tolerance by H2O2 and Ca were associated with the regulation of transcription factors and stress-protective genes in perennial grass species. Plants of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) were sprayed with water (control), H2O2 (9 mm), or CaCl2 (10 mm) and exposed to drought stress for 20 days in controlled-environment growth chambers. Foliar application of H2O2 or Ca led to significant improvement in drought tolerance of creeping bentgrass, as demonstrated by greater turf quality, leaf relative water content, chlorophyll content, photochemical efficiency, and cell membrane stability, as compared with the untreated control. The application of H2O2 and Ca resulted in significant up-regulation of genes in Ca signaling transduction pathways [Ca-dependent kinase 26 (CDPK26), mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1), and 14-3-3] and transcript factors (WRKY75 and MYB13). For genes encoding antioxidant enzymes, H2O2 mainly enhanced superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) expression, while Ca primarily improved transcript levels of SOD, monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), and GR. In addition, heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), metallothionein 1 (MT1), and glutamine synthetase 2 (GS2) were also markedly up-regulated by H2O2 and Ca under drought stress. However, the transcript level of lipoxygenase 3 (LOX3) was significantly down-regulated by H2O2 and Ca under well-watered and drought conditions. These results imply that H2O2 and Ca commonly or differentially regulate genes expression in association with drought tolerance through activating Ca signaling pathway and regulating transcription factors and stress-protective genes expression, leading to the alleviation of lipid peroxidation, maintenance of correct protein folding and translocation, and enhancement of nitrogen metabolism under a prolonged period of drought stress in creeping bentgrass.

Objective To explore the effects of dexmedetomidine (Dex) on systemic inflammatory response induced by renal ischemia reperfusion (rIRI) and the possible mechanism. Methods Fifteen C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into 3 groups, that is, sham operation group (laparotomy without renal pedicle occlusion), rIRI group (bilateral renal pedicles was clamped for 60 min with a microvascular clamp), and rIRI+Dex group (intraperitoneal injection of 25 μg/ml Dex in 15 min prior to bilateral renal ischemia). In 24 h after surgery or reperfusion, the blood samples were harvested and analyzed for counts of neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes by blood analyzer and for the serum levels of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-10) by ELISA. Western blotting was used to detect iNOS and Arg 1 in the harvested peritoneal macrophages for the polarization. Results Compared with the mice in the sham group, the counts of neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes were significantly elevated (P < 0.01), the serum levels of TNF-α and IL-1β were increased (P < 0.01), and the expression of M1 marker iNOS was enhanced while that of M2 marker Arg 1 was decreased (P < 0.01). Dex pretreatment resulted in no significant changes in the counts of neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes (P>0.05), reduced serum levels of TNF-α and IL-1β (P < 0.01) and increased level of IL-10 (P < 0.01), and decreased expression of iNOS (P < 0.01) as well as increase of Arg 1 (P < 0.05) when compared with the indicators in the rIRI group. Conclusion Dex inhibits the systemic inflammatory response induced by rIRI, which may be associated with modulation of macrophage polarization.

A Cu-10 Ni-2Ti wt.% alloy has been fabricated by induction melting and casting. The microstructure evolutions of the studied alloy treated with thermal-mechanical treatment were characterized. After homogenized at 950 °C for four hours, hot rolling by 80% at 900 °C solid solution treated at 970 °C for four hours, cold-rolled by 50%, aged at 450 °C for one hour, the hardness, electrical conductivity, tensile strength, yield strength, and the elongation of the studied alloy approached 181 HV, 22.1% IACS, 576 MPa, 486 MPa, and 14.6%, respectively. The studied alloy shows large products of strength and elongation (15.4 GPa·%, 9.3 GPa·%, 8.41 GPa·%, and 10.1 GPa·% for the samples treated with a solid solution, under aged, peak aged, and over-aged states), which are much higher than those of other high strength conductive copper alloys. Immunotherapy has made great progress in the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), since nivolumab was approved for the second-line therapy of advanced RCC. The efficacy of antiPD1 monotherapy was limited in the first-line setting, therefore the combination of immunotherapy and anti-angiogenesis targeted therapy is becoming the trend. As the release of several randomized phase Ⅲ clinical trials results, ipilimumab in combination with nivolumab is recommended for intermediate-/highrisk advanced RCC. Pembrolizumab plus axitinib or avelumab plus axitinib are proved to be more efficacious than traditional targeted therapy. How to select the appropriate population for immunotherapy depends on individual characteristics, disease risk, social economics and appropriate prognostic biomarkers.

BACKGROUND The Nanyangtian scheelite deposit is an important skarn scheelite deposit in Yunnan Province, which is located in Laojunshan W-Sn deposit area, Southeast Yunnan. Due to its complex geological background and multi-stage metallogenic characteristics, its mineralization age and genesis remain controversial. OBJECTIVES To explore the metallogenic age, genesis and material origins of two types of scheelite deposits in order to explore formation patterns. METHODS Molybdenum Re-Os isotope dating was used to constrain the age, whereas in situ trace element and in situ Sr isotopes of scheelite were used to determine the composition of trace elements and Sr isotopes in scheelite. RESULTS The Re-Os isochron age of molybdenite associated with scheelite in the feldspar-quartz mineral vein of Nanyantian was 151.0±1.3Ma, younger than the age of skarn mineralization, indicating a later mineralization event. The skarn-type scheelite was enriched in light rare earth elements with negative Eu anomaly (δEu=0.46). The average content of ∑REE, Mo and Sr in skarn scheelite were 65.60, 240.16 and 883.43μg/g, respectively. Feldspar-quartz vein-type scheelite showed a flat rare earth pattern with positive Eu anomaly (δEu=2.8) and average content of ∑REE, Mo and Sr were 194.40, 16.01 and 129.26μg/g, respectively. respectively. The skarn scheelite had a relatively low and uniform 87Sr/86Sr value of 0.71319 to 0.71491, indicating that the ore-forming fluids were mainly magmatic-hydrothermal in origin, whereas feldspar-quartz vein type scheelite had a wide 87Sr/86Sr range of 0.71537 to 0.72803, with an average of 0.72079, characteristic of metamorphic fluids. CONCLUSIONS The differences in trace and rare earth element contents between two types of mineralization indicate that they have different fluid sources. The negative Eu anomaly of the skarn-type scheelite indicates a high oxygen fugacity environment, whereas the feldspar-quartz vein-type scheelite is formed in a reductive environment in terms of positive Eu anomaly. Sr isotopes of two different types of scheelite display a feature of binary mixing, indicating that feldspar-quartz vein-type scheelite has a superimposed transformation effect on skarn-type scheelite, and the strong metasomatism of ore-forming fluids and surrounding rocks is the key to the formation of scheelite.

BACKGROUND Organic-rich sedimentary rocks of the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation are widely developed in the Ordovician-Silurian boundary of the Upper Yangtze platform in China, which is rich in shale gas resources. Using the Re-Os isotope system to study this set of sedimentary formations, not only can the precise age of the formation be obtained, but also the sedimentary environment of this period based on the enrichment mechanism of Re and Os elements can be inferred. This provides a more reasonable explanation for the trigger mechanism of the second large-scale biological extinction event in Earth's history. OBJECTIVES To accurately constrain the age of carbonaceous mudstone and infer the conditions of the paleoenvironment. METHODS The 11 carbonaceous mudstone samples from dirll core of Banzhu No.1, Zheng'an County, Guizhou Province were studied. These dirll core samples were continuous across the boundary of the Ordovician Wufeng Formation-Silurian Longmaxi Formation. Through the high precision Re-Os isotopic dating of the 11 samples, the Ordovician-Silurian boundary stratigraphic age was obtained. RESULTS The Re-Os isotope age was calculated to be 443.68±6.24Ma[2σ, n=7, (187Os/188Os)i=0.699±0.019, MSWD=0.55]. The results were highly consistent with the age (443.7±1.5Ma) published by the International Commission on Stratigraphy, which provided a direct and accurate age basis for the Ordovician-Silurian boundary. Os isotope characteristics showed that amounts of terrigenous detrital were involved in the diagenesis, the occurrence of multi-stage volcanic activities and the transition from glacial period to interglacial period. The Re-Os isotopic features of the continuous sedimentary strata reflected that the sedimentary environment of the Ordovician Wufeng Formation-Silurian Longmaxi Formation had undergone the change of oxygen enrichment-oxygen enrichment-rich oxygen enrichment in this study area. CONCLUSIONS Hirnantian glaciation events and volcanic eruption caused biological extinction and together promoted organic matter enrichment, providing hydrocarbon generation potential for the Wufeng Formation-Longmaxi Formation organic-rich sedimentary rocks.

Membrane lipid reprogramming is one of the most important adaptive strategies in plant species under unfavorable environmental circumstances. Therefore, the present experiment was conducted to elucidate the effect of diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate (DA-6), a novel synthetic plant growth regulator, on oxidative damage, photosynthetic performance, changes in lipidomic profile, and unsaturation index of lipids in two white clover (Trifolium repens) cultivars (drought-sensitive “Ladino” and drought-resistant “Riverdel”) under PEG-6000-induced water-deficit stress. Results revealed that water-deficit stress significantly enhanced oxidative damage and decreased photosynthetic functions in both cultivars. However, the damage was less in Riverdel. In addition, water-deficit stress significantly decreased the relative content of monogalactocyl-diacylglycerols (MGDG), sulfoquinovosyl-diacylglycerols (SQDG), phosphatidic acisd (PA), phosphatidyl-ethanolamines (PE), phosphatidyl-glycerols (PG), phosphatidyl-serines (PS), ceramides (Cer), hexosylmonoceramides (Hex1Cer), sphingomyelins (SM), and sphingosines (Sph) in both cultivars, but a more pronounced decline was observed in Ladino. Exogenous application of DA-6 significantly increased the relative content of digalactocyl-diacylglycerols (DGDG), monogalactocyl-diacylglycerolsabstra (MGDG), sulfoquinovosyl-diacylglycerols (SQDG), phosphatidic acids (PA), phosphatidyl-ethanolamines (PE), phosphatidyl-glycerols (PG), phosphatidyl-inositols (PI), phosphatidyl-serines (PS), ceramides (Cer), hexosylmonoceramides (Hex1Cer), neutral glycosphingolipids (CerG2GNAc1), and sphingosines (Sph) in the two cultivars under water-deficit stress. DA-6-treated Riverdel exhibited a significantly higher DGDG:MGDG ratio and relative content of sphingomyelins (SM) than untreated plants in response to water deficiency. Furthermore, the DA-6-pretreated plants increased the unsaturation index of phosphatidic acids (PA) and phosphatidylinositols (PI) in Ladino, ceramides (Cer) and hexosylmonoceramides (Hex1Cer) in Riverdel, and sulfoquinovosyl-diacylglycerols (SQDG) in both cultivars under water stress. These results suggested that DA-6 regulated drought resistance in white clover could be associated with increased lipid content and reprogramming, higher DGDG:MGDG ratio, and improved unsaturation index of lipids, contributing to enhanced membrane stability, integrity, fluidity, and downstream signaling transduction.

Introduction Through the INTernational ConsoRtium of Primary Care BIg Data Researchers (INTRePID), we compared the pandemic impact on the volume of primary care visits and uptake of virtual care in Australia, Canada, China, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, the UK and the USA.Methods Visit definitions were agreed on centrally, implemented locally across the various settings in INTRePID countries, and weekly visit counts were shared centrally for analysis. We evaluated the weekly rate of primary care physician visits during 2019 and 2020. Rate ratios (RRs) of total weekly visit volume and the proportion of weekly visits that were virtual in the pandemic period in 2020 compared with the same prepandemic period in 2019 were calculated.Results In 2019 and 2020, there were 80 889 386 primary care physician visits across INTRePID. During the pandemic, average weekly visit volume dropped in China, Singapore, South Korea, and the USA but was stable overall in Australia (RR 0.98 (95% CI 0.92 to 1.05, p=0.59)), Canada (RR 0.96 (95% CI 0.89 to 1.03, p=0.24)), Norway (RR 1.01 (95% CI 0.88 to 1.17, p=0.85)), Sweden (RR 0.91 (95% CI 0.79 to 1.06, p=0.22)) and the UK (RR 0.86 (95% CI 0.72 to 1.03, p=0.11)). In countries that had negligible virtual care prepandemic, the proportion of visits that were virtual were highest in Canada (77.0%) and Australia (41.8%). Alteration of ploidy in one particular plant species often influences their environmental adaptation. Warm-season bermudagrass is widely used as forage, turfgrass, and ground-cover plant for ecological remediation, but exhibits low shade tolerance. Adaptive responses to shade stress between triploid hybrid bermudagrass cultivars [“Tifdwarf” (TD), “Tifsport” (TS), and “Tifway” (TW)] and tetraploid common bermudagrass cultivar “Chuanxi” (CX) were studied based on changes in phenotype, photosynthesis, and secondary metabolites in leaves and stems. Shade stress (250 luminance, 30 days) significantly decreased stem diameter and stem internode length, but did not affect the leaf width of four cultivars. Leaf length of CX, TD, or TW showed no change in response to shade stress, whereas shade stress significantly elongated the leaf length of TS. The CX and the TS exhibited significantly higher total chlorophyll (Chl), Chl a, carotenoid contents, photosynthetic parameters [PSII photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance] in leaves than the TW and the TD under shade stress. The CX also showed a significantly higher performance index on absorption basis (PIABS) in leaf and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) in leaf and stem than the other three cultivars under shade stress. In addition, the TS maintained higher proantho cyanidims content than the TW and the TD after 30 days of shade stress. Current results showed that tetraploid CX exhibited significantly higher shade tolerance than triploid TD, TS, and TW mainly by maintaining higher effective photosynthetic leaf area, photosynthetic performance of PSI and PSII (Pn and Fv/Fm), and photosynthetic pigments as well as lower Chl a/b ratio for absorption, transformation, and efficient use of light energy under shade stress. For differential responses to shade stress among three triploid cultivars, an increase in leaf length and maintenance of higher Fv/Fm, gas exchange, water use efficiency, carotenoid, and proanthocyanidin contents in leaves could be better morphological and physiological adaptations of TS to shade than other hybrid cultivars (TD and TW).

To estimate the effects of early cervical lesions (ECL) on female reproductive function and IVF/ICSI cycle outcomes, a retrospective cohort study involving 111 infertile women from 2014 to 2019 was performed. Thirty-seven women with a history of ECL and seventy-four controls, undergoing IVF/ICSI cycles, were included in the ECL group and comparison group respectively. Demographic characteristics, ovarian reserve, and IVF/ICSI cycle outcomes of both groups were collected. Basal serum FSH level, AMH level, AFC, number of oocytes retrieved and matured, normal fertilization rate, embryo available rate, blastocyst formation rate, implantation rate, pregnancy rate, and cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) were assessed and compared. We observed that while both groups were similar concerning baseline features, significantly more women in the ECL group were diagnosed as poor ovarian response (POR), compared with those in the comparison group (27.0% vs. 10.8%, P=0.003). The pregnancy rate and LBR for a complete cycle were both significantly lower in the ECL group (38.5% vs. 58.8%, P=0.021; 28.9% vs. 48.2%, P=0.025, respectively). The conservative and optimal CLBRs for up to four complete cycles in the ECL group were also lower than those in the comparison group (40.5% vs. 55.4%, P=0.140; 45.9% vs. 67.6%, P=0.028). Longer time intervals (over one year) between ECL diagnosis/treatment and assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycle start negatively affected the pregnancy rate and LBR. In conclusion, female patients with ECL history seemingly have a lower ovarian reserve, reduced pregnancy rate, and decreased live birth rate (LBR), compared with age-matched women undergoing IVF/ICSI.

Soil salinization is a serious challenge to many countries worldwide. Putrescine (Put) is related to the improvement of seed germination under salt stress, but molecular and metabolic mechanisms are still not fully understood. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of seed soaking with Put on germination characteristics under salt stress induced by 100 mm sodium chloride (NaCl) and to further analyze subsequent stress tolerance associated with amylolysis, oxidative damage, sodium (Na+)/ potassium (K+) accumulation and transportation, and metabolic homeostasis in white clover (Trifolium repens cv. Haifa) seedlings. The results showed that seed soaking with Put significantly alleviated salt-induced decreases in the endogenous Put content, germination rate, germination vigor, germination index, Rl/SL, and fresh/dry weight of seedlings. Put application also significantly promoted starch metabolism through activating α-amylase and β-amylase activities under salt stress. The metabolomic analysis showed that seed soaking with Put significantly increased the accumulation of polyamines (Put and spermidine), amino acids (γ-aminobutyric acid, glutamate, alanine, proline, citrulline, etc.), organic acids (ketopentanic acid, malonic acid, malic acid, ketopentanic acid, cis-sinapinic acid, etc.), lipids and fatty acids (glycerol, stearic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.), sugars (levoglucosan, fucose, and anhydro-D-galactose), alcohols (myo-inositol, allo-inositol, hexadecanol, and threitol), and other metabolites (thymine, xanthine, adenine, guanine, and glycerol 1-phosphate, etc.) associated with enhanced tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) shunt contributing to better osmotic adjustment, cell membrane stability, energy supply, and metabolic homeostasis when seeds germinated under salt stress. In addition, Put significantly up-regulated the AsSOS1, NHX6, SKOR, HKT1, and HKT8 expression levels which played critical roles in Na+ rejection and K+ retention resulting in higher K+/Na+ ratio during seed germination under salt stress. The Put-induced up-regulation of HAL2 transcription level could reduce the toxicity of 3′-phosphoadenosine-5′-phosphosulfate (PAPS) in cells. Current findings will provide an integrative understanding of Put-induced salt tolerance associated with amylolysis, metabolic regulation, and ionic homeostasis during seed germination.

A systematic study was carried out on a novel designed austenitising bending process to explore the effects of quenching temperatures on the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of high-strength micro-alloyed steel. Results reveal that the qualified parts could be bent into a satisfactory shape without spring-back and cracks in bending temperatures of 850–1000 °C. The simulation was applied to predict the equivalent stress, stress neutral layer (SNL) and plate thickness. Strength presents a decreasing trend with the increase of bending temperature owing to integrated influences of high-temperature dynamic recovery (DRV) and dynamic recrystallisation (DRX). Beyond that, SNL nearby the geometrical centre line throughout the plate thickness and dislocation pile-ups on the tension/compression zones are responsible for the smaller hardness on middle regions while higher hardness on the surface areas. Through austenite reconstruction, a smaller martensite packet size would directly improve the strength of the plates bent at a lower temperature. The prior austenite size may be related to the appearance of martensite variants but not necessary. Furthermore, the high accuracy by comparing the experimental results with simulation would provide a high-value reference for the practical manufacturing process of railway spring clips.

However, the limited battery capacity leads to a limited serving time, which cannot ensure normal operation anywhere and at any time. In this work, a self-powered multifunctional bracelet is proposed by integrating a hybrid energy supply module and a coupled pulse monitoring sensor with the inherent structure of the watch. The hybrid energy supply module can harvest rotational kinetic energy and elastic potential energy from the watch strap swinging simultaneously, generating a voltage of 69 V and a current of 87 mA. Meanwhile, with a statically indeterminate structure design and the coupling of triboelectric and piezoelectric nanogenerators, the bracelet enables stable pulse signal monitoring during movement with a strong anti-interference ability. With the assistance of functional electronic components, the pulse signal and position information of the wearer can be transmitted wirelessly in real-time, and the rescue light and illuminating light can be driven directly by flipping the watch strap slightly. The universal compact design, efficient energy conversion, and stable physiological monitoring demonstrate the wide application prospects of the self-powered multifunctional bracelet.

Abstract Electrospinning (e‐spin) technique has emerged as a versatile and feasible pathway for constructing diverse polymeric fabric structures, which show potential applications in many biological and biomedical fields. Owing to the advantages of adjustable mechanics, designable structures, versatile surface multi‐functionalization, and biomimetic capability to natural tissue, remarkable progress has been made in flexible bioelectronics and tissue engineering for the sensing and therapeutic purposes. In this perspective, we review recent works on design of the hierarchically structured e‐spin fibers, as well as, the fabrication strategies from one‐dimensional individual fiber (1D) to three‐dimensional (3D) fiber arrangements adaptive to specific applications. Then, we focus on the most cutting‐edge progress of their applications in flexible bioelectronics and tissue engineering. Finally, we propose future challenges and perspectives for promoting electrospun fiber‐based products toward industrialized, intelligent, multifunctional, and safe applications.

Radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation has emerged as an effective alternative for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF), but ablation lesions will result in swelling and hematoma of local surrounding tissue, triggering inflammatory cell infiltration and increased release of inflammatory cytokines. Some studies have shown that the inflammatory response may be related to the early occurrence of AF. The most direct way to inhibit perioperative inflammation is to use anti-inflammatory drugs such as glucocorticoids. Here, we prepared polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles loaded with budesonide (BUD) and delivered them through irrigation of saline during the onset of ablation. Local high temperature promoted local rupture of PLGA nanoparticles, releasing BUD, and produced a timely and effective local myocardial anti-inflammatory effect, resulting in the reduction of acute hematoma and inflammatory cell infiltration and the enhancement of ablation effect. Nanoparticles would also infiltrate into the local myocardium and gradually release BUD ingredients to produce a continuous anti-inflammatory effect in the next few days. This resulted in a decrease in the level of inflammatory cytokine IL-6 and an increase of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. This study explored an extraordinary drug delivery strategy to reduce ablation-related inflammation, which may prevent early recurrence of AF.

Diabetes treatment and rehabilitation are usually a lifetime process. Optogenetic engineered designer cell-therapy holds great promise in regulating blood glucose homeostasis. However, portable, sustainable, and long-term energy supplementation has previously presented a challenge for the use of optogenetic stimulation in vivo. Herein, we purpose a self-powered optogenetic system (SOS) for implantable blood glucose control. The SOS consists of a biocompatible far-red light (FRL) source, FRL-triggered transgene-expressing cells, a power management unit, and a flexible implantable piezoelectric nanogenerator (i-PENG) to supply long-term energy by converting biomechanical energy into electricity. Our results show that this system can harvest energy from body movement and power the FRL source, which then significantly enhanced production of a short variant of human glucagon-like peptide 1 (shGLP-1) in vitro and in vivo. Indeed, diabetic mice equipped with the SOS showed rapid restoration of blood glucose homeostasis, improved glucose, and insulin tolerance. Our results suggest that the SOS is sufficiently effective in self-powering the modulation of therapeutic outputs to control glucose homeostasis and, furthermore, present a new strategy for providing energy in optogenetic-based cell therapy.

Smart home, smart transportation, smart medical, smart agriculture, and smart grid are widely used in the Internet of Things technology. The application of Internet of Things technology to the construction of folk sports characteristic towns is of great significance. The construction of folk sports characteristic towns and the protection of intangible cultural heritage have the same purpose and interoperability of elements as the development of traditional cities. From the perspective of protecting folk culture and intangible cultural heritage, it is effective to promote the development of small towns with folk custom characteristics. Based on the research on the construction of folk-custom sports towns, this paper proposes a series of data model analysis and analyzes the proportion of sports preferences in the survey of volunteers in the folk-custom sports towns. The final result of the research shows that the ball games sports personnel accounted for the largest proportion, with 156 people accounting for 48.15%. This shows that about half of the people like ball sports, which proves that ball sports should be the mainstay of folk sports towns, and other sports should be supplemented by other sports.

Background. Cervical cancer, especially in underdeveloped areas, poses a great threat to human health. In view of this, we stratified the age and social demographic index (SDI) based on the epidemiological development trend and attributable risk of cervical cancer in countries and regions around the world. Methods. According to the data statistics of the global burden of disease database (GBD) in the past 30 years, we adopted the annual percentage change (EAPCs) to evaluate the incidence trend of cervical cancer, that is, incidence rate, mortality, and disability adjusted life expectancy (DALY). Meanwhile, we investigated the potential influence of SDI on cervical cancer’s epidemiological trends and relevant risk factors for cervical cancer-related mortality. Results. In terms of incidence rate and mortality, the high SDI areas were significantly lower than those of low SDI areas. The incidence and mortality in women aged 20 to 39 were relatively stable, whereas an upward trend existed in patients aged 40 to 59. The global cervical cancer incidence rate increased from 335642 in 1990 to 565541 in 2019 (an increase of 68.50%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.28%), while the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) showed a slight downward trend of 14.91/100000 people (95% uncertainty interval [UI], 13.37-17.55) in 1990 to 13.35/100,000 persons (95% UI, 11.37-15.03) in 2019. The number of annual deaths at a global level increased constantly and there were 184,527 (95% UI, 164,836-218,942) deaths in 1990 and 280,479 (95% UI, 238,864-313,930) deaths in 2019, with an increase of 52.00%(average annual growth rate: 1.73%). The annual age-standardized disability adjusted annual life rate showed a downward trend (decline range: 0.95%, 95% confidence interval [CI], from −1.00% to − 0.89%). In addition, smoking and unsafe sex were the main attributable hazard factors in most GBD regions. Conclusions. In the past three decades, the increase in the global burden of cervical cancer is mainly concentrated in underdeveloped regions (concentrated in low SDI). On the contrary, in countries with high sustainable development index, the burden of cervical cancer tends to be reduced. Alarmingly, ASIR in areas with low SDI is on the rise, which suggests that policy makers should pay attention to the allocation of public health resources and focus on the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer in underdeveloped areas, so as to reduce its incidence rate, mortality, and prognosis.

As an important plant growth regulator, the role of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in regulating seeds germination was less well elucidated under water stress. The present study was conducted to investigate the impact of GABA pretreatment on seeds germination of white clover (Trifolium repens) under water deficient condition. Results demonstrated that seeds pretreated with 2μmol/l GABA significantly alleviated decreases in endogenous GABA content, germination percentage, germination potential, germination index, root length, and fresh weight along with marked reduction in mean germination time after 7days of germination under drought stress. In addition, seeds priming with GABA significantly increased the accumulation of soluble sugars, non-enzymatic antioxidants [reduced ascorbate, dehydroascorbic acid, oxidized glutathione (GSSG), and reduced glutathione (GSH)], and enzymes [superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), glutathioe reductase, and monodehydroasorbate reductase (MDHR)] activities involved in antioxidant metabolism, which could be associated with significant reduction in osmotic potential and the accumulation of superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, electrical leakage, and malondialdehyde in seeds under drought stress. The GABA-pretreated seeds exhibited significantly higher abundance of dehydrin (DHN, 56 KDa) and expression levels of DHNs encoding genes (SK2, Y2K, Y2SK, and Dehydrin b) and transcription factors (DREB2, DREB3, DREB4, and DREB5) than the untreated seeds during germination under water-limited condition. These results indicated that the GABA regulated improvement in seeds germination associated with enhancement in osmotic adjustment, antioxidant metabolism, and DREB-related DHNs expression. Current study will provide a better insight about the GABA-regulated defense mechanism during seeds germination under water-limited condition.

Robert Van Gulik, one of the twentieth century’s most prominent sinologists and detective writers, has made significant contributions to the study of Chinese cultures but received inadequate scholarly appraisal until the twenty-first century. Although Van Gulik’s Judge Dee mysteries have been well received informally among ordinary readers and scholars, little academic attention has been devoted to Judge Dee’s trials of evil clergy due to their covert representation in Van Gulik’s narration. This paper pays attention to crimes committed by religious leaders and members of orders to reveal an implicit religion-crime relationship in Van Gulik’s works on Judge Dee with the help of Kenneth Burke’s pentadic criticism. In our analysis, we find that Van Gulik differentiates between good and evil disciples, the acts of the disciples and the beliefs of religions, and non-mainstream and orthodox religion, presenting a heterogeneous religious crime landscape. As a result, in the misdeeds of clergy and offenses against the sacred religion, a Janus-faced (two-faced) clergy crime is identified in the mysteries.

Bone injuries are common in clinical practice. Given the clear disadvantages of autologous bone grafting, more efficient and safer bone grafts need to be developed. Bone is a multidirectional and anisotropic piezoelectric material that exhibits an electrical microenvironment; therefore, electrical signals play a very important role in the process of bone repair, which can effectively promote osteoblast differentiation, migration, and bone regeneration. Piezoelectric materials can generate electricity under mechanical stress without requiring an external power supply; therefore, using it as a bone implant capable of harnessing the body’s kinetic energy to generate the electrical signals needed for bone growth is very promising for bone regeneration. At the same time, devices composed of piezoelectric material using electromechanical conversion technology can effectively monitor the structural health of bone, which facilitates the adjustment of the treatment plan at any time. In this paper, the mechanism and classification of piezoelectric materials and their applications in the cell, tissue, sensing, and repair indicator monitoring aspects in the process of bone regeneration are systematically reviewed.

To study the effect of the length of the second inclined section of the inclined vane on the vortex structure and pressure distribution inside a vortex pump, this paper uses a combination of numerical simulations (CFD) and experimental verification methods to analyze the static pressure distribution of the internal flow field and the volume fraction distribution of the impeller bubble at different total inlet pressures as well as to analyze the volume and streamline of the distribution of the impeller bubble of the vortex pump at different instants. The results show that as the length of the second inclined section of the inclined vane increases, both the low-pressure area and the volume fraction of the vapor bubbles inside the impeller of the vortex pump increase, and the resistance to cavitation becomes worse. When the total inlet pressure of the impeller is low, a large number of vortices will be generated inside the flow channel of the vortex pump, leading to vortex cavitation; the longer the length of the inclined section, the larger the velocity gradient of the fluid and the more serious the phenomenon of deliquescence, leading to more intense cavitation, while a shorter inclined section length can effectively improve the anti-cavitation performance of the vortex pump.

High temperature limits the cultivation and utilization of cool-season plants in many regions worldwide. Recently, extreme hot waves swept across the globe in summer, leading to enormous economic loss. The evaluation and identification of genotypic variation in thermotolerance within species are critical to breeding for environmental adaptation and also provide potential materials to explore thermo-resistant mechanism in plants. Forty-two accessions of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), which is a cool-season perennial grass for turf and ecological remediation, were collected from 15 different countries. Physiological traits, namely, chlorophyll (Chl) content, electrolyte leakage, photochemical efficiency, performance index on absorption basis, leaf relative water content, and osmotic potential were used to evaluate the heat tolerance of these materials in controlled growth chambers and field during summer. Stay-green and early-aging genotypes were selected to further reveal the potential mechanism of tolerance to senescence and heat damage associated with alterations in Chl metabolism, antioxidant and photosynthetic capacity, and endogenous γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Findings showed that there were significant genetic variations in physiological traits among 41 materials in response to high temperature stress. The 13M, PROVIDENCE, and LOFTS L-93 were the top three accessions with superior tolerance to heat and summer stress than other materials in terms of laboratory and field tests. In response to heat stress, the stay-green genotype PROVIDENCE exhibited significantly higher photochemical efficiency, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and water use efficiency than the heat-susceptible W6 6570. Delayed leaf senescence in relation to less Chl loss was detected in the PROVIDENCE associated with maintenance of significantly higher expression levels of Chl-anabolic genes (AsCHLH, AsPBGD, and AsPOR) and lower Chl-catabolic gene AsPPH under heat stress. Genetic attributes, such as better capacity to scavenge reactive oxygen species and higher endogenous GABA content could play positive roles in alleviating heat-induced senescence, oxidative damage, and metabolic disturbance in the PROVIDENCE.

The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC), as well as subsequent patient mortality, has increased in the last decade; an unhealthy diet is considered to be the leading cause. Previous studies have shown the potential of the bromodomain containing 1 ( BRD1 ) gene as a therapeutic target for CRC based on its specificity; however, the genetic mode of action and expression in CRC cells are yet to be investigated. In this study, target genes were screened from single-cell transcriptome sequencing data, and the collected clinical specimens were subjected to immunohistochemistry (IHC) to identify the protein expression of target genes; the results were verified in the GSE17536 array set. Receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) and overall survival (OS) were used to test target genes as biomarkers and independent predictive markers for CRC. Based on these results, BRD1 was screened as a target gene, and IHC results showed that BRD1 protein expression in CRC was higher than that in normal tissues and was significantly upregulated in poorly differentiated (PD) CRC. ROC analysis showed that the area under the curve in the collected clinical specimens and GSE17536 were 0.6062 and 0.6094, respectively. OS analysis showed that higher BRD1 protein expression was associated with a significantly shorter survival time. In conclusion, BRD1 expression was positively correlated with PD CRC and negatively correlated with OS, indicating that BRD1 could predict the differentiation state of CRC and may be a novel predictive biomarker.

Abstract Various types of energy exist everywhere around us, and these energies can be harvested from multiple sources to power micro-/nanoelectronic system and even personal electronic products. In this work, we proposed a hybrid energy-harvesting system (HEHS) for potential in vivo applications. The HEHS consisted of a triboelectric nanogenerator and a glucose fuel cell for simultaneously harvesting biomechanical energy and biochemical energy in simulated body fluid. These two energy-harvesting units can work individually as a single power source or work simultaneously as an integrated system. This design strengthened the flexibility of harvesting multiple energies and enhanced corresponding electric output. Compared with any individual device, the integrated HEHS outputs a superimposed current and has a faster charging rate. Using the harvested energy, HEHS can power a calculator or a green light-emitting diode pattern. Considering the widely existed biomechanical energy and glucose molecules in the body, the developed HEHS can be a promising candidate for building in vivo self-powered healthcare monitoring system.

Abstract Monitoring various medical information distributed throughout the body is of great importance in early clinic diagnosis and treatment of disease. To discover abnormal medical signals and find their causes in good time, the human body should be monitored continuously and accurately. To meet the requirements, various battery‐less and self‐powered information acquisition techniques are invented. In this review, the recent advances in self‐powered medical information sensors (SMIS) with different functions, structure design, and electric performance are summarized and discussed. The SMIS mainly involves triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG), pyroelectric nanogenerator (PyNG)/ thermoelectric generator (TEG) and solar cell. Additionally, this review also analyzed the remaining challenges and prospected the development direction of SMIS in future.

Implantable electrical devices offer a variety of potential diagnostic options and treatments in different medical fields. Especially in the absence of specific drugs, the implantable nerve electrodes (INEs) are one of the main treatments for neurological diseases such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. INEs are helpful in studying and regulating nervous system via recording nerve electrical signals or stimulating nerve tissue, but the mechanical mismatch between rigid electrode and soft biological tissue is a critical challenge for long-term implantation. The advances in micromachining technologies and materials have greatly promoted the development of INEs, such as enhanced biocompatibility, reduced foreign body reactions, and structural innovation. In particular, the mechanical performances of flexible implantable electrode and soft biological tissue matched better with less tissue damage. In this review, the implantable flexible nerve electrodes (IFNEs) based on functionalized substrates, intelligent electrodes, and innovative structures are elaborated and discussed. We summarized their various applications in neural prosthesis and neural signal recording. We also discussed the questions and possible methods for developing future IFNEs in the perspective.

Hyperspectral remote sensing technology is an important method for crop water monitoring, aiming to understand crop growth status. In order to achieve rapid, refined and comprehensive monitoring for the leaf and canopy water content of summer maize in different growth stages, controlled experiments are implemented during different growth stages of the summer maize with different irrigation water drought simulation test in North China. The water content of vegetation index (WI), water stress index (MSI), global vegetation moisture index (GVMI), compound ratio index (WNV and WCG) and reflectance curve area (Darea) of summer maize are defined for inversion models of equivalent water thickness for canopy (EWTC) and fuel moisture content for leaf (FMC). The hyperspectral remote sensing inversion models of moisture content of summer maize in 2014 are verified by using drought simulation data of different irrigation water amount during different growth periods in 2015. Results show that WI, MSI, GVMI, WNV, WCG and Darea for inversion EWTC of summer maize at the three-leaf stage doesn't pass the significance test of 0.05 level, but all the indices estimation EWTC models after the three-leaf stage pass the significance test of 0.01 level. The model accuracy for different stages from high to low are as follows: Tasseling stage, knotting stage, filling stage, mature stage, and seven-leaf stage. FMC at the seven-leaf stage and jointing stage is retrieved by 6 special indicators and all of them pass the significance test of 0.01 level. FMC at the three-leaf stage is retrieved by WNV index, but 6 spectral indicators after jointing stage cannot retrieve FMC of summer maize. In summary, the difference of precision of the same spectral indicator to retrieve the water content of summer maize is obvious in different growth stages. The retrieved water content precision is higher for middle summer maize growth period, but relatively lower for early and late remote sensing. Although canopy and leaf scale water content indices can reflect the drought situation of summer maize, considering the precision of spectral indicator retrieval of two scale water content indices of summer maize is closely related to the growth period of summer maize, a retrieval model of water content is proposed for different growth stages of summer maize to provide accurate simulation of water content in summer maiz growth.

The periodic structure coating maintenance process based on the selective surface was proposed. The coating of oxidized Fe and carbonyl iron particles (CIPs) was obtained by the corrosion method. The morphology of particles after corrosion was characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The permittivity and permeability of the absorber adding the hybrid particles were tested in 8-18GHz, and the oxidized coating parameter could be calculated using the effective medium rule. Effects of the corrosion process and the maintenance process were analysed. The results show that as the CIPs oxidized in the coating surface, the coating's absorbing property was weakened as the oxidization thickness is increased, and the increment value of reflection loss (RL) is about 2dB. When the coating thickness is set as 0.8mm, the maintenance performance is unsuitable. However, if the coating thickness is increased to 1mm and the oxidization thickness is 0.1mm, the maintenance performance is improved, then the absorbing band can be widened in 10-18GHz and the RL decrement is about 2dB correspondingly.

Flexible devices such as solar cells and nanogenerators are attractive for powering wearable electronics, but waterproof capabilities would extend applications. Here the authors report a bionic stretchable nanogenerator that is capable of harvesting energy and multi-position motion monitoring underwater.

Implantable medical electronic devices are limited by battery lifetime and inflexibility, but self-powered devices can harvest biomechanical energy. Here the authors demonstrate cardiac pacing and correction of sinus arrhythmia with a symbiotic cardiac pacemaker, which is an implanted self-powered pacing system powered by cardiac motion, in a swine.

(1) Background: research on vaccines has received extensive attention during epidemics. However, few studies have focused on the impact of media use on vaccination behavior and the factors influencing vaccination in groups with different media use degrees; (2) Method: Based on seven items related to media use, a total of 11,031 respondents were categorized by the frequency of media use by using latent profile analysis (LPA). Binary regression analysis was used to study the factors that influence the vaccination behaviors of people with different media use frequencies; (3) Results: All respondents were classified into the following three groups: media use low frequency (9.7%), media use general (67.1%), and media use high frequency (23.2%). Media use low frequency (β = −0.608, p < 0.001) was negatively associated with COVID-19 vaccination behavior. In the media use low frequency, analysis showed that “aged 41 years or older” β = 1.784, p < 0.001), had religious belief (β = 0.075, p < 0.05), were ethnic minorities (β = 0.936, p < 0.01) and had friends support (β = 0.923, p < 0.05) were associated with a preference to accept the COVID-19 vaccine. In the media use general, those who aged 41 years old and older (β = 1.682, p < 0.001), had major depression (β = 0.951, p < 0.05), had friends support (β = 0.048, p < 0.001) would be more likely to receive COVID-19 vaccination. However, respondents who live in towns (β = −0.300, p < 0.01) had lower behaviors to receive vaccination for COVID-19. In the media use high frequency, the respondents who aged 41 or older (β = 1.010, p < 0.001), were ethnic minorities (β = 0.741, p < 0.001), had moderate depression (β = 1.003, p < 0.05) would receive the vaccination for COVID-19 positively; (4) Conclusions: The more occluded the media use is, the less likely the respondents are to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccination behavior is influenced by different factors in groups with different frequencies of media use. Therefore, the government and appropriate departments should make individualized and targeted strategies about COVID-19 vaccination and disseminate the vaccination information to different media use groups.

Background: The current study aimed to investigate the impact of asymptomatic or mild severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on female fertility and laboratory and clinical outcomes in assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatments.Methods: Patients undergoing ART treatments in the Reproductive Medicine Center, Tongji Hospital, Wuhan, from May 2020 to February 2021 were enrolled. Seventy of them were positive for serum SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (IgG and/or IgM), and 3973 patients had negative results. Propensity score matching with a ratio of 1:3 was performed, and there were 65 females in the case group and 195 females in the control group.Findings: The ovarian reserves and ovarian responses between groups after matching were similar. The proportions of mature oocytes, damaged oocytes, fertilized oocytes, cleavage embryos, high-quality embryos, and available blastocysts were also similar, despite a slight decrease in the blastocyst formation rate in the case group. In addition, there were no significant differences in terms of the biochemical pregnancy rate, clinical pregnancy rate, early miscarriage rate, or implantation rate.Interpretation: There is no evidence that a history of asymptomatic or mild SARS-CoV-2 infection in females may negatively affect female fertility, embryo laboratory outcomes, or clinical outcomes in ART treatments. Drought is a serious outcome of climate change reducing the productivity of forage species under arid and semi-arid conditions worldwide. Diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate (DA-6), a novel plant growth regulator, has proven to be involved in the amelioration of critical physiological functions in many agricultural crops under various abiotic stresses, but the role of the DA-6 in improving seed germination has never been investigated under drought stress. The present study was carried out to elucidate the impact of the DA-6 priming on seeds germination of white clover under drought stress. Results showed that seed priming with the DA-6 significantly mitigated the drought-induced reduction in germination percentage, germination vigor, germination index, seed vigor index, root length, shoot length, and fresh weight after 7 days of seed germination. The DA-6 significantly increased the endogenous indole-3-acetic acid, gibberellin, and cytokinin content with marked reduction in abscisic acid content in seedlings under drought stress. In addition, the DA-6 significantly accelerated starch catabolism by enhancing the activities of hydrolases contributing toward enhanced soluble sugars, proline content and ameliorated the antioxidant defense system to enhance the ability of reactive oxygen species scavenging under drought stress. Furthermore, exogenous DA-6 application significantly increased dehydrins accumulation and upregulated transcript levels of genes encoding dehydrins (SK2, Y2SK, or DHNb) during seeds germination under water deficient condition. These findings suggested that the DA-6 mediated seeds germination and drought tolerance associated with changes in endogenous phytohormones resulting in increased starch degradation, osmotic adjustment, antioxidants activity, and dehydrins accumulation during seed germination under water deficient condition.

RNA chaperone protein Hfq is an important post-transcriptional regulator in bacteria, while c-di-GMP is a second messenger signaling molecule widely distributed in bacteria. Both factors have been found to play key roles in post-transcriptional regulation and signal transduction pathways, respectively. Intriguingly, the two factors show some common aspects in the regulation of certain physiological functions such as bacterial motility, biofilm formation, pathogenicity and so on. Therefore, there may be regulatory relationship between Hfq and c-di-GMP. For example, Hfq can directly regulate the activity of c-di-GMP metabolic enzymes or alter the c-di-GMP level through other systems, while c-di-GMP can indirectly enhance or inhibit the hfq gene expression through intermediate factors. In this article, after briefly introducing the Hfq and c-di-GMP regulatory systems, we will focus on the direct and indirect regulation reported between Hfq and c-di-GMP, aiming to compare and link the two regulatory systems to further study the complicated physiological and metabolic systems of bacteria, and to lay a solid foundation for drawing a more complete global regulatory network.
