206. Biological and chemical nitrification inhibitors exhibited different effects on soil gross N nitrification rate and N2O production: a 15N microcosm study.

Abstract

Nitrification inhibitors (NIs) are considered as an effective strategy for reducing nitrification rate and related environmental nitrogen (N) loss. However, whether plant-derived biological NIs had an advantage over chemical NIs in simultaneously inhibiting nitrification rate and N2O production remains unclear. Here, we conducted an aerobic 15N microcosmic incubation experiment to compare the effects of a biological NI (methyl 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate, MHPP) with three chemical NIs, 2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl) pyridine (nitrapyrin), dicyandiamide (DCD), and 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) on (i) gross N mineralization and nitrification rate and (ii) the relative importance of nitrification and denitrification in N2O emission in a calcareous soil. The results showed that DMPP significantly inhibited m_gross rate (P < 0.05), whereas DCD, nitrapyrin, and MHPP only numerically inhibited it. Gross N nitrification (n_gross) rates were inhibited by 9.48% in the DCD treatment to 51.5% in the nitrapyrin treatment. Chemical NIs primarily affected the amoA gene abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), whereas biological NIs affected the amoA gene abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and AOB. AOB's community composition was more susceptible to NIs than AOA, and NIs mainly targeted Nitrosospira clusters of AOB. Chemical NIs of DCD, DMPP, and nitrapyrin proportionally reduced N2O production from nitrification and denitrification. However, the biological NI MHPP stimulated short-term N2O emission and increased the proportion of N2O from denitrification. Our findings showed that the influence of NIs on gross N mineralization rate (m_gross) was dependent on the NI type. MHPP exhibited a moderate n_gross inhibitory capacity compared with the three chemical NIs. The mechanisms of chemical and biological NIs inhibiting n_gross can be partly attributed to changes in the abundance and community of ammonia oxidizers. A more comprehensive evaluation is needed to determine whether biological NIs have advantages over chemical NIs in inhibiting greenhouse gas emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

For the sustainability of economic, ecological and social development, the safety of infrastructure, including buried pipelines, is extremely important. Undercrossing tunneling can compromise the safety of buried pipelines because of deformations, cracks and dislocations, which can result in wasted resources, environmental pollution and economic losses. Therefore, it is important to assess the pipeline response accurately during tunnel excavation. This paper proposes a generalized Hermite spectral solution to estimate the pipeline response induced by twin tunneling. The proposed solution is formulated by a truncated series of Hermite functions and it is available in an unbounded domain. On the basis of the two-stage analysis method, a general formula for calculating the soil greenfield displacement induced by twin tunneling is first derived using the superposition principle. To obtain the final solution, the soil greenfield displacement and pipeline displacement are expanded using two truncated series of Hermite functions, and the governing differential equation of pipeline displacement is subsequently simplified into a linear algebraic system. After solving this system, a general solution for calculating pipeline displacement is formulated. Then, the convergence of the developed solution is proven, and its validity is verified against existing theoretical solutions and centrifuge test results. The effects of the truncated series number and its scaling factor are investigated. Finally, parametric studies are conducted to discuss pipeline responses induced by twin tunneling.

Abstract

The development of air-diffusion electrodes (ADEs) that electrocatalytically produce H2O2 for its decomposition by Fenton’s reaction is gaining relevance. However, attention has been paid to improve the catalytic layer using standard carbonaceous substrates like Ccloth. This work clearly proves the superior endurance of 3 cm2 ADEs fabricated with Nimesh as substrate, achieving stable H2O2 accumulation up to 60 mM at 100 mA for 48 h in an undivided cell. Consequently, the antibiotic carbenicillin could be totally degraded in 13 min by photoelectro-Fenton (PEF) process using the Nimesh|C-PTFE ADE at 20 mA in an acidic model solution. This high performance was confirmed by PEF treatment in urban wastewater, reaching total drug disappearance in 18 min with >80 % TOC abatement. The time course of radical dotOH and toxicity was monitored, whereas chromatographic analysis of treated solutions revealed the formation of 32 aromatic and 16 aliphatic byproducts, including 7 linear carboxylic acids., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)
