Antiferromagnetic spintronics has been receiving attention recently, while spin-texture dependent magnetoresistance (MR) represents one of the main mechanisms for magnetic data storage. In particular, sufficiently large MR with high operating temperatures would be highly required for advanced spintronic applications. In this work, we experimentally investigate the MR effect of well-known antiferromagnet α-Fe2O3 (hematite) in a single crystal form, which has the Morin transition temperature as high as Tm ∼ 260 K. It is revealed that the MR effect associated with the spin-texture re-alignment, i.e., the spin-flop from the out-of-plane direction (c axis) to the in-plane direction, driven by sufficiently low magnetic fields inclined along the [012] direction, reaches up to ∼2.5% at temperature T ∼ 250 K. The first-principles calculations suggest that this MR effect originates from the reduced bandgap due to the spin-flop and the finite spin–orbital coupling. Passive surveillance for malaria cases was conducted in Yunnan Province, China, along the China-Myanmar border. Infection with Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum protozoa accounted for 69% and 28% of the cases, respectively. Most patients were adult men. Cross-border travel into Myanmar was a key risk factor for P. falciparum malaria in China.

Electrolyte gating technology has been widely used as an effective tool to study novel physics at complex oxide surfaces and interfaces. Certain emergent phenomena reported in electro-gated SrTiO3 (STO) surfaces are particularly interesting. Here, we report on the disparate electron transport behaviors of electrolyte-gated STO (001) and (110) oriented surfaces. In contrast to the anomalous transport from an insulating state to a Kondo-like state and then metallic states on the (001) surface, with increasing carrier density, the (110) surface always behaves as an insulating state. A comparison study suggests that the oxygen vacancies and localized Ti3+ ions on the (001) surface are scatter carriers, but no such defects are found on the (110) surface. This suggests that these surfaces are intrinsically insulating, and the observed anomalous effects are likely induced by the Ti3+ ions and oxygen vacancies introduced during electrolyte gating. With the discovery of two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism in van der Waals (vdW) materials, there has been significant interest in 2D multiferroics. Herein, we report the occurrence of weak ferromagnetism and magnetoelectricity in vdW antiferromagnet MnPSe3 single crystals. Our results demonstrate that MnPSe3 undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at the Néel temperature TN = 70 K with weak ferromagnetism along the [1–10] direction. Detailed magnetoelectric (ME) data show that MnPSe3 exhibits a linear ME tensor αij with nine nonzero components. Additionally, a magnetically induced electric polarization as large as 98.5 μC/m2 is observed along the [110] direction, with a ME coefficient of 13.5 ps/m at 10 K for a magnetic field of 9 T applied along the [110] direction. Importantly, we discuss our experiments based on symmetry and microscopic analysis, thereby suggesting that the spin-dependent p-d hybridization mechanism plays an important role in the emergence of magnetic-field-induced ferroelectricity. Let H be a pointed Hopf algebra with abelian coradical. Let A\supseteq B be left (or right) coideal subalgebras of H that contain the coradical of H. We show that A has a PBW basis over B, provided that H satisfies certain mild conditions. In the case that H is a connected graded Hopf algebra of characteristic zero and A and B are both homogeneous of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, we show that A is a graded iterated Ore extension of B. These results turn out to be conceptual consequences of a structure theorem for each pair S\supseteq T of homogeneous coideal subalgebras of a connected graded braided bialgebra R with braiding satisfying certain mild conditions. The structure theorem claims the existence of a well-behaved PBW basis of S over T. The approach to the structure theorem is constructive by means of a combinatorial method based on Lyndon words and braided commutators, which is originally developed by V. K. Kharchenko [Algebra Log. 38 (1999), pp. 476–507, 509] for primitively generated braided Hopf algebras of diagonal type. Whether solid nanohydrogel, nanosphere, nanoparticle, nanosheet, micelles and lipoproteins, or “hollow” nanobubble, liposome, nanocapsule, and nanovesicle, all of them can exhibit outstanding loading and releasing capability as a drug vehicle – in particular polymeric nanovesicle, a microscopic hollow sphere that encloses a water core with a thin polymer membrane. Besides excellent stability, toughness and liposome-like compatibility, polymeric nanovesicles offer considerable scope for tailoring properties by changing their chemical structure, block lengths, stimulus-responsiveness and even conjugation with biomolecules. In this review, we summarize the latest advances in stimulus-responsive polymeric nanovesicles for biomedical applications. However, the clinical utility of SN38 has been greatly limited due to its undesirable properties, such as poor solubility and low stability.Materials and methods: In order to overcome these weaknesses, moeixitecan, a lipophilic SN38 prodrug containing a SN-38, a trolox, a succinic acid linker, and a hexadecanol chain, was loaded into liposomal nanoparticles by ethanol injection method.Results: Experiments showed that the moeixitecan-loaded liposomal nanoparticles (MLP) with a diameter of 105.10±1.49 nm have a satisfactory drug loading rate (90.54±0.41%), high solubility and stability, and showed sustained release of SN38. Notably, MLP exhibited better antitumor activity against human colon adenocarcinoma cells than irinotecan, a FDA-approved drug for the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer. Furthermore, xenograft model results showed that MLP outperformed irinotecan in terms of pharmacokinetics, in vivo therapeutic efficacy and safety. Finally, we used molecular dynamic simulations to explore the association between the structure of MLP and the physical and functional properties of MLP, moeixitecan molecules in MLP folded themselves inside the hydrocarbon chain of the lipid bilayer, which led an increased acyl chain order of the lipid bilayer, and therefore enhanced the lactone ring stability protecting it from hydrolysis.Conclusion: Our MLP constructing strategy by liposome engineering technology may serve a promising universal approach for the effective and safe delivery of lipophilic prodrug.Keywords: SN38, lipophilic prodrug, liposomes, molecular dynamic simulations, cancer therapy

Background: Malaria within the Greater Mekong sub-region is extremely heterogeneous. While China and Thailand have been relatively successful in controlling malaria, Myanmar continues to see high prevalence. Coupled with the recent emergence of artemisinin-resistant malaria along the Thai-Myanmar border, this makes Myanmar an important focus of malaria within the overall region. However, accurate epidemiological data from Myanmar have been lacking, in part because of ongoing and emerging conflicts between the government and various ethnic groups. Here the results are reported from a risk analysis of malaria slide positivity in a conflict zone along the China-Myanmar border. Methods. Surveys were conducted in 13 clinics and hospitals around Laiza City, Myanmar between April 2011 and October 2012. Demographic, occupational and educational information, as well as malaria infection history, were collected. Logistic models were used to assess risk factors for slide positivity. Results: Age patterns in Plasmodium vivax infections were younger than those with Plasmodium falciparum. Furthermore, males were more likely than females to have falciparum infections. Patients who reported having been infected with malaria during the previous year were much more likely to have a current vivax infection. During the second year of the study, falciparum infections among soldiers increased signficiantly. Conclusions: These results fill some knowledge gaps with regard to risk factors associated with malaria slide positivity in this conflict region of north-eastern Myanmar. Since epidemiological studies in this region have been rare or non-existent, studies such as the current are crucial for understanding the dynamic nature of malaria in this extremely heterogeneous epidemiological landscape. © 2013 Li et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Background: The effect of integrating vector larval intervention on malaria transmission is unknown when insecticide-treated bed-net (ITN) coverage is very high, and the optimal indicator for intervention evaluation needs to be determined when transmission is low. Methods. A post hoc assignment of intervention-control cluster design was used to assess the added effect of both indoor residual spraying (IRS) and Bacillus-based larvicides (Bti) in addition to ITN in the western Kenyan highlands in 2010 and 2011. Cross-sectional, mass parasite screenings, adult vector populations, and cohort of active case surveillance (ACS) were conducted before and after the intervention in three study sites with two- to three-paired intervention-control clusters at each site each year. The effect of larviciding, IRS, ITNs and other determinants of malaria risk was assessed by means of mixed estimating methods. Results: Average ITN coverage increased from 41% in 2010 to 92% in 2011 in the study sites. IRS intervention had significant added impact on reducing vector density in 2010 but the impact was modest in 2011. The effect of IRS on reducing parasite prevalence was significant in 2011 but was seasonal specific in 2010. ITN was significantly associated with parasite densities in 2010 but IRS application was significantly correlated with reduced gametocyte density in 2011. IRS application reduced about half of the clinical malaria cases in 2010 and about one-third in 2011 compare to non-intervention areas. Conclusion: Compared with a similar study conducted in 2005, the efficacy of the current integrated vector control with ITN, IRS, and Bti reduced three- to five-fold despite high ITN coverage, reflecting a modest added impact on malaria transmission. Background: Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) have become an essential tool in the contemporary malaria control and management programmes in the world. This study aims to evaluate the performance of two commonly used RDTs for malaria diagnosis in the China-Myanmar border area. Methods. A total 606 febrile patients in the China-Myanmar border were recruited to this study and were diagnosed for malaria infections by microscopy, two RDTs tests (Pf/Pan device, and Pv/Pf device) and nested PCR. Results: Malaria parasites were found in 143 patients by microscopy, of which 51, 73, and 19 were Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum/P. vivax mixed infections, respectively. Compared to microscopy, the sensitivity of the Pf/Pan device was 88.6% for P. falciparum and 69.9% for P. vivax with the specificity of 90.4%. For a subset of 350 patients, the sensitivity of the Pf/Pan device and Pv/Pf device for detection of P. falciparum was 87.5% and 91.7%, respectively; and for detection of P. vivax was 72.0% and 73.8%, respectively. The specificity of the Pf/Pan device and Pv/Pf device was 94.3% and 96.5%, respectively. Nested PCR detected malaria parasites in 174 of 606 samples, of which 67, 79, two and 26 were P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale and P. falciparum/P. vivax mixed infections, respectively. Compared to nested PCR, all other methods had sensitivity below 80%, suggesting that a significant number of cases were missed. Conclusions: Compared to PCR, both microscopy and RDTs had lower sensitivities. RDTs had similar performance to microscopy for P. falciparum diagnosis, but performed worse for P. vivax diagnosis. Other RDT products should be selected with higher sensitivity (and good specificity) for both P. falciparum and P. vivax diagnosis. © 2013 Yan et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Background: Assessment of malaria endemicity at different altitudes and transmission intensities, in the era of dwindling vector densities in the highlands, will provide valuable information for malaria control and surveillance. Measurement of serum anti-malarial antibodies is a useful marker of malaria exposure that indicates long-term transmission potential. We studied the serologic evidence of malaria endemicity at two highland sites along a transmission intensity cline. An improved understanding of the micro-geographic variation in malaria exposure in the highland ecosystems will be relevant in planning effective malaria control.Methods: Total IgG levels to Plasmodium falciparum MSP-119were measured in an age-stratified cohort (< 5, 5-14 and ≥ 15 years) in 795 participants from an uphill and valley bottom residents during low and high malaria transmission seasons. Antibody prevalence and level was compared between different localities. Regression analysis was performed to examine the association between antibody prevalence and parasite prevalence. Age-specific MSP-119seroprevalence data was fitted to a simple reversible catalytic model to investigate the relationship between parasite exposure and age.Results: Higher MSP-119seroprevalence and density were observed in the valley residents than in the uphill dwellers. Adults (> 15 years) recorded high and stable immune response in spite of changing seasons. Lower responses were observed in children (≤ 15 years), which, fluctuated with changing seasons particularly in the valley residents. In the uphill population, annual seroconversion rate (SCR) was 8.3% and reversion rate was 3.0%, with seroprevalence reaching a plateau of 73.3% by age of 20. Contrary, in the valley bottom population, the annual SCR was 35.8% and the annual seroreversion rate was 3.5%, and seroprevalence in the population had reached 91.2% by age 10.Conclusion: The study reveals the micro-geographic variation in malaria endemicity in the highland eco-system; this validates the usefulness of sero-epidemiological tools in assessing malaria endemicity in the era of decreasing sensitivity of conventional tools. © 2012 Badu et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Background: The effective measures for the control of malaria and filariasis vectors can be achieved by targeting immature stages of anopheline and culicine mosquitoes in productive habitat. To design this strategy, the mechanisms (like biotic interactions with conspecifc and heterospecific larvae) regulating mosquito aquatic stages survivorship, development time and the size of emerging adults should be understood. This study explored the effect of co-habitation between An. gambiae s.s. and Cx. quinquefasciatus on different life history traits of both species under different densities and constant food supply in the habitats of the same size under semi-natural conditions. Methods. Experiments were set up with three combinations; Cx. quinquefasciatus alone (single species treatment), An. gambiae s.s. alone (single species treatment); and An. gambiae s.s. with Cx. quiquefasciatus (co-habitation treatment) in different densities in semi field situation. Results: The effect of co-habitation of An. gambiae s.s. and Cx. quinquefasciatus was found to principally affect three parameters. The wing-lengths (a proxy measure of body size) of An. gambiae s.s. in co-habitation treatments were significantly shorter in both females and males than in An. gambiae s.s single species treatments. In Cx. quinquefasciatus, no significant differences in wing-length were observed between the single species and co-habitation treatments. Daily survival rates were not significantly different between co-habitation and single species treatments for both An. gambiae s.s. and Cx. quinquefasciatus. Developmental time was found to be significantly different with single species treatments developing better than co-habitation treatments. Sex ratio was found to be significantly different from the proportion of 0.5 among single and co-habitation treatments species at different densities. Single species treatments had more males than females emerging while in co-habitation treatments more females emerged than males. In this study, there was no significant competitive survival advantage in co-habitation. Conclusion: These results suggest that co-habitation of An. gambiae s.s. and Cx. quinquefasciatus in semi-natural conditions affect mostly An. gambiae s.s. body size. Hence, more has to be understood on the effects of co-habitation of An. gambiae s.s. and Cx. quinquefasciatus in a natural ecology and its possible consequences in malaria and filariasis epidemiology. © 2012 Kweka et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Therefore, specific diagnosis and therapy for malignant tumors are becoming more and more crucial and urgent, especially for early cancer diagnosis and cancer-targeted therapy. Derived theranostics that combine several functions into one “package” could further overcome undesirable differences in biodistribution and selectivity between distinct imaging and therapeutic agents. In this article, we discuss a chief clinical diagnosis tool – MRI – focusing on recent progress in magnetic agents or systems in multifunctional polymer nanoassemblies for combing cancer theranostics. We describe abundant polymeric MRI-contrast agents integrated with chemotherapy, gene therapy, thermotherapy, and radiotherapy, as well as other developing directions. In vivo, Th17 cells, CD40, interleukin (IL)-17A, and IL-27 in the lung tissues were quantified and compared between mice with and without cigarette smoke exposure. In vitro, Th17 cells, IL-17A, and IL-27 yielded by multiple cell cultivations in which BMDCs from mice with or without cigarette smoke exposure were fostered with CD4+ T cells from healthy mice spleens in the presence of antagonistic CD40 antibody and/or cigarette smoke extract (CSE) were quantified and compared. The flow cytometry was used to detect expressions of Th17 cells and CD40, and the liquid chip was used to detect levels of IL-17A and IL-27.Results: Both in vivo exposed to cigarette smoke and in vitro to CSE, CD40 expressions noticeably escalated on the surfaces of BMDCs. The presence of Th17 cells, IL-17A, and IL-27 in the lung tissues prominently increased in mice exposed to cigarette smoke. The in vitro culture of CD4+ T cells and BMDCs significantly enhanced the differentiation of CD4+ T cells toward Th17 cells and secretions of IL-17A and IL-27 in the case that BMDCs were produced from mice exposed to cigarette smoke or the culture occurred in the presence of CSE. Usage of antagonistic CD40 antibody evidently reduced the number of Th17 cells, IL-17A, and IL-27 that increased due to cigarette smoke exposure.Conclusion: The CD40–CD40L ligation is associated with the quantities of Th17 cells and relevant cytokines in the context of cigarette smoke exposure. Reducing the number of Th17 cells via the usage of antagonistic CD40 antibody can be an inspiration for pursuing a novel therapeutic target for immune inflammation in COPD. Background: Localized mosquito larval habitat management and the use of larvicides have been proposed as important control tools in integrated malaria vector management programs. In order to optimize the utility of these tools, detailed knowledge of the spatial distribution patterns of mosquito larval habitats is crucial. However, the spatial and temporal changes of habitat distribution patterns under different climatic conditions are rarely quantified and their implications to larval control are unknown.Results: Using larval habitat data collected in western Kenya highlands during both dry and rainy seasons of 2003-2005, this study analyzed the seasonal and inter-annual changes in the spatial patterns in mosquito larval habitat distributions. We found that the spatial patterns of larval habitats had significant temporal variability both seasonally and inter-annually.Conclusions: The pattern of larval habitats is extremely important to the epidemiology of malaria because it results in spatial heterogeneity in the adult mosquito population and, subsequently, the spatial distribution of clinical malaria cases. Results from this study suggest that larval habitat management activities need to consider the dynamic nature of malaria vector habitats. © 2009 Li et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Ozone and its precursors were measured from 15 June 2006 to 14 June 2007 at an urban site in Shanghai and used to characterize photochemical oxidant production in this region. During the observation period, ozone displays a seasonal variation with a maximum in spring. Observed nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) reached a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. NOx and CO has a similar double-peak diurnal cycle, implying that they are largely of motor vehicle origin. Total nonmethane organic compounds (NMOC) concentrations averaged over the morning, and the 24-hour periods have a large day-to-day variation with no apparent seasonal cycle. Aromatics play a dominant role in contributing to total NMOC reactivity and ozone-forming potential. Anthropogenic NMOC of diverse sources are major components of total NMOC and consist mainly of moderate and low reactivity species. In contrast, relatively low levels of biogenic NMOC concentrations were observed in urban Shanghai. The early morning NMOC/NOx ratios are typically below 8:1 with an average of around 4:1, indicating that the sampling location is situated in a NMOC-limited regime. Model simulations confirm that potential photochemical ozone production in Shanghai is NMOC-sensitive. It is presently difficult to predict the impact of future human activities, such as the increase of automobiles and vegetation-covered landscapes and the reduction of aerosol on ozone pollution in the fast developing megacities of China, and additional studies are needed to better understand the highly nonlinear ozone problem. © 2009., the American Geophysical Union.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and precipitation change affect plants' survival and thriving. Phenotypic plasticity can show plants adaptability to varying environment. Physiological plasticity reflects plants capacity to open areas, and morphological plasticity reflects capacity to survive and grow. In this study, we simulated combined effects of elevated CO2 and precipitation change on the phenotypic plasticity of two Stipa species: Stipa grandis and Stipa breviflora. Our results indicated that plasticity of physiology was higher than plasticity of morphology under either ambient or elevated CO2 concentration in both Stipa species. S. breviflora showed higher plasticity index of physiological (PIp) and plasticity index of morphological (PIm) than S. grandis under elevated CO2 concentration. Therefore, we speculate that S. breviflora is more adaptable than S. grandis under high CO2 concentration in the future. Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and simultaneous precipitation change is advantageous to S. breviflora distribution expansion, nonetheless, the changing environments also favor the competitive ability of S. grandis. Neuregulin receptor degradation protein-1 (Nrdp1) is a newly discovered E3 ligase that plays a role in the apoptosis process of multiple diseases. Previous studies has shown that Nrdp1 exerted a proapoptotic effect in cardiac diseases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential involvement of Nrdp1 in the pathological processes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To create a mouse model of experimental colitis, trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) was administered and the severity of colitis was assessed based on changes in weight and histological scores. Using Western blot and immunohistochemistry, significant increase in Nrdp1 expression was observed in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). This was accompanied with the up-regulation of cleaved PARP and active caspase-3 in IECs, indicating a potential function in IECs. To study this further, we built an in vitro model of tumor necrosis factor-apha (TNF-a)-induced apoptosis using human IEC line HT-29 cells. When Nrdp1 was knocked down, a decrease in apoptosis was observed, suggesting that Nrdp1 may play a proapoptotic role in IEC apoptosis. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is associated with the suppression of downstream targets of Nrdp1, such as protein kinase B (AKT). Furthermore, immunohistochemistry analysis in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and normal controls supported the same results as observed in experimental colitis. We report the discovery of two mini-Neptunes in near 2:1 resonance orbits (P = 7.610303 d for HIP 113103 b and P  = 14.245651 d for HIP 113103 c) around the adolescent K-star HIP 113103 (TIC 121490076). The planet system was first identified from the TESS mission, and was confirmed via additional photometric and spectroscopic observations, including a ∼17.5 h observation for the transits of both planets using ESA CHEOPS. We place ≤4.5 min and ≤2.5 min limits on the absence of transit timing variations over the 3 yr photometric baseline, allowing further constraints on the orbital eccentricities of the system beyond that available from the photometric transit duration alone. With a planetary radius of R p  =   |$1.829_{-0.067}^{+0.096}$| R⊕, HIP 113103 b resides within the radius gap, and this might provide invaluable information on the formation disparities between super-Earths and mini-Neptunes. Given the larger radius R p  =  |$2.40_{-0.08}^{+0.10}$| R⊕ for HIP 113103 c, and close proximity of both planets to HIP 113103, it is likely that HIP 113103 b might have lost (or is still losing) its primordial atmosphere. We therefore present simulated atmospheric transmission spectra of both planets using JWST, HST , and Twinkle. It demonstrates a potential metallicity difference (due to differences in their evolution) would be a challenge to detect if the atmospheres are in chemical equilibrium. As one of the brightest multi sub-Neptune planet systems suitable for atmosphere follow up, HIP 113103 b and HIP 113103 c could provide insight on planetary evolution for the sub-Neptune K-star population.
