Abstract

We investigated the phase transition and anisotropic optical property of MoO3 under pressure by optical spectroscopy. An α-MoO3 to MoO3-II transition and another MoO3-II to MoO3-III transition were observed at 11 and at 27 GPa, respectively. Accompanied by the structural transition, its optical anisotropy also changes with pressure. While maintaining the similar angle-resolved intensity patterns, the polarization angle with the maximum intensity of the Mo–O2–Mo symmetric stretching mode moves from 90° to 105° then back to 90° with pressure. The result is helpful to understand the mechanism of the pressure-induced phase transition and tune the anisotropic optical properties of MoO3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

214. Distribution, characteristics and daily fluctuations of microplastics throughout wastewater treatment plants with mixed domestic—industrial influents in Wuxi City, China.

Abstract

In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), microplastics (MPs) are complex, especially with mixed domestic-industrial influents. Conventional random grab sampling can roughly depict the distribution and characteristics of MPs but can not accurately reflect their daily fluctuations. In this study, the concentration, shape, polymer type, size, and color of MPs were analyzed by micro-Raman spectroscopy (detection limit of 0.05 mm) throughout treatment stages of three mixed domestic-industrial WWTPs (W1, W2, and W3) in Wuxi City, China, and the daily fluctuations of MPs were also obtained by dense grab sampling within 24 h. For influent samples, the average MP concentration of 392.2 items/L in W1 with 10% industrial wastewater was much higher than those in W2 (71.2 items/L with 10% industrial wastewater) and W3 (38.3 items/L with 60% industrial wastewater). White polyethylene granules with a diameter less than 0.5 mm from plastic manufacturing were the most dominant MPs in the influent of W1, proving the key role of industrial sources in MPs pollution. In addition, the daily dense sampling results showed that MP concentration in W1 influent fluctuated widely between 29.1 items/L and 4617.6 items/L within a day. Finally, few MPs (less than 4.0 items/L) in these WWTPs effluents were attributed to the effective removal of wastewater treatment processes. Abstract

The cross section of the process $e^+e^-\to \pi^+D^0D^{*-}$ for center-of-mass energies from 4.05 to 4.60~GeV is measured precisely using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Two enhancements are clearly visible in the cross section around 4.23 and 4.40~GeV. Using several models to describe the dressed cross section yields stable parameters for the first enhancement, which has a mass of $4228.6 \pm 4.1 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}/c^2$ and a width of $77.0 \pm 6.8 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. Our resonant mass is consistent with previous observations of the $Y(4220)$ state and the theoretical prediction of a $D\bar{D}_1(2420)$ molecule. This result is the first observation of $Y(4220)$ associated with an open-charm final state. Fits with three resonance functions with additional $Y(4260)$, $Y(4320)$, $Y(4360)$, $\psi(4415)$, or a new resonance, do not show significant contributions from either of these resonances. The second enhancement is not from a single known resonance. It could contain contributions from $\psi(4415)$ and other resonances, and a detailed amplitude analysis is required to better understand this enhancement.

Abstract

Physical review letters 122(10), 102002 (2019). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.122.102002, The cross section of the process e+e-→π+D0D*- for center-of-mass energies from 4.05 to 4.60 GeV is measured precisely using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Two enhancements are clearly visible in the cross section around 4.23 and 4.40 GeV. Using several models to describe the dressed cross section yields stable parameters for the first enhancement, which has a mass of 4228.6±4.1±6.3 MeV/c2 and a width of 77.0±6.8±6.3 MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. Our resonant mass is consistent with previous observations of the Y(4220) state and the theoretical prediction of a DD¯1(2420) molecule. This result is the first observation of Y(4220) associated with an open-charm final state. Fits with three resonance functions with additional Y(4260), Y(4320), Y(4360), ψ(4415), or a new resonance do not show significant contributions from either of these resonances. The second enhancement is not from a single known resonance. It could contain contributions from ψ(4415) and other resonances, and a detailed amplitude analysis is required to better understand this enhancement., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

[Display omitted] Peptide-based supramolecular hydrogels have shown great promise as drug delivery systems (DDSs) because of their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, biological function, synthetic feasibility, and responsiveness to external stimuli. Self-assembling peptide molecules are able rationally designed into specific nanoarchitectures in response to the different environmental factors under different circumstances. Among all stimuli that have been investigated, utilizing inherent biological microenvironment, such as metal ions, enzymes and endogenous redox species, to trigger self-assembly endows such systems spatiotemporal controllability to transport therapeutics more accurately. Materials formed by weak non-covalent interactions result in the shear-thinning and immediate recovery behavior. Thus, they are injectable via a syringe or catheter, making them the ideal vehicles to deliver drugs. Based on the above merits, self-assembling peptide-based DDSs have been applied to treat various diseases via direct administration at the lesion site. Herein, in this review, we outline the triggers for inducing peptide-based hydrogels formation and serving as DDSs. We also described the advancements of peptide-based supramolecular hydrogels for local drug delivery, including intratumoral, subcutaneous, ischemia-related tissue (intramyocardial, intrarenal, and ischemic hind limb), and ocular administration. 220. Expression of microRNA-155 in circulating T cells is an indicator of immune activation levels in HIV-1 infected patients.

Abstract

Objectives: MicroRNA-155 (miR-155) regulates activation of T cells. However, its relationship with T-cell immune activation level in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients remains unclear. Methods: We recruited 103 HIV-1 infected patients with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) and 79 cART naïve patients. The miR-155 levels in circulatory T cells were detected by quantitative reverse transcription–PCR. T cell immune activation was detected by the expression of CD38 via flow cytometry. Results: The levels of miR-155 in the total peripheral blood mononuclear cells, CD4+, and CD8+ T cells from HIV-1 patients were increased (p < 0.01). cART naïve patients exhibited much higher miR-155 levels in CD4 + and CD8+ T cells than patients with cART(p < 0.01). The percentage of CD4 + CD38+ T and CD8 + CD38+ T cells was also increased in cART naïve patients (p < 0.01). MiR-155 level was positively related to immune activation of T cells. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that miR-155 levels in circulating T cells of HIV-1 patients are increased and associated with T cell activation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As an impact-source-localization technique, Lamb waves are commonly used to detect low-velocity impact in composite structures. However, the performance of Lamb waves is susceptible under deformation conditions. In this paper, a novel approach combined the Toeplitz approximation method (TAM) and multiple-signal classification (MUSIC) (TAM-MUSIC) to improve impact-source-localization (angle and distance in polar coordinates) accuracy under deformation conditions. The method divided a two-dimensional search of direction and distance into two one-dimensional searches. The impact direction was calculated by the TAM, which was introduced into the steering vector of MUSIC to estimate the distance by scanning the whole monitoring area. An epoxy laminate plate experiment showed that the phase and amplitude of uniform linear-array signals had different average plate curvature that led to poor impact-source-localization accuracy using the MUSIC method. TAM provided high-resolution direction-finding capability, suitable for the pretreatment of Lamb waves. Results showed that the present method, with a small amount of computation and low memory requirement, had higher location-estimation accuracy than that of traditional methods under deformation conditions.

230. Constructing Battery-Aware Virtual Backbones in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract

A critical issue in battery-powered sensor networks is to construct energy efficient virtual backbones for network routing. Recent study in battery technology reveals that batteries tend to discharge more power than needed and reimburse the over-discharged power if they are recovered. In this paper we first provide a mathematical battery model suitable for implementation in sensor networks. We then introduce the concept of battery-aware connected dominating set (BACDS) and show that in general the minimum BACDS (MBACDS) can achieve longer lifetime than the previous backbone structures. Then we show that finding a MBACDS is NP-hard and give a distributed approximation algorithm to construct the BACDS. The resulting BACDS constructed by our algorithm is at most opt size, where is the maximum node degree and opt is the size of an optimal BACDS. Simulation results show that the BACDS can save a significant amount of energy and achieve up to longer network lifetime than previous schemes.

231. Bending Resistance Experiment of Double-hole Hollow Precast Beam.

Abstract

Aiming at the problems of stress deformation and crack distribution of hollow prefabricated beams, three double-hole hollow precast beams and a solid comparative beam were tested. The static loading method was adopted to compare the performance indicators of hollow prefabricated beams with solid prefabricated beams, such as test process description, failure morphology, load-deflection curve, mid-span deformation, bearing capacity and influence of opening. The research results show that the double-hole hollow prefabricated beam optimizes and improves the force transmission path and law during the stress deformation process, and reduces the stress concentration. Through the calculation and comparison of the same-scale members, the raw material consumption of the double-hole hollow prefabricated beam is reduced by 36.41%. The cracking load of the double-hole hollow prefabricated beam is increased by about 41.19% compared with the solid beam. Double opening hole has a certain delay effect on the early cracking of ordinary prefabricated beams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Due to the positive impact of ride sharing on urban traffic and environment, it has attracted a lot of research attention recently. However, most existing researches focused on the profit maximization or the itinerary minimization of drivers, only rare work has covered on adjustable price function and matching algorithm for the batch requests. In this paper, we propose a request matching algorithm and an adjustable price function that benefits drivers as well as passengers. Our request-matching algorithm consists of an exact search algorithm and a group search algorithm. The exact search algorithm consists of three steps. The first step is to prune some invalid groups according to the total number of passengers and the capacity of vehicles. The second step is to filter out all candidate groups according to the compatibility of requests in same group. The third step is to obtain the most profitable group by the adjustable price function, and recommend the most profitable group to drivers. In order to enhance the efficiency of the exact search algorithm, we further design an improved group search algorithm based on the idea of original simulated annealing. Extensive experimental results show that our method can improve the income of drivers, and reduce the expense of passengers. Meanwhile, ride sharing can also keep the utilization rate of seats 80%, driving distance is reduced by 30%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

245. Optimization of butt welding of zinc-coated thin sheets with oscillating fiber laser beams: weld formation, microstructure, and mechanical properties

Abstract

In this study, a series of butt welding tests with oscillating fiber laser beams were performed on zinc-coated thin sheets of 0.8 and 1.2 mm thicknesses. The optimized welding parameters were used to produce robust welds with no perforations or pores. The weld formation process, microstructure, and mechanical properties of welded joints with the butt surfaces processed via laser and shear cutting techniques were systematically investigated. Besides, the corrosion resistance of the laser oscillating welded joint was analyzed in detail. The welded joint with the butt surface processed by laser cutting shows less undercutting degree with a more favorable weld appearance. The two welded joints had similar microstructures containing different forms of ferrites. The heat-affected zone was almost identical to the base metal in microstructure but had larger grains. Widmanstatten ferrites’ content in the large-grained weld metal of welded joints with surface processed via laser cutting exceeded that of shear cutting-processed ones. The former had lower tensile strength than the latter, but their overall mechanical performance was better than base metal. After salt spray corrosion and electrochemical corrosion tests, the laser oscillating welded joint was only slightly corroded and exhibited no obvious deterioration in corrosion resistance.
