209. Growing up with Distant Parents: Socialization and Alienation of 'Left-Behind' Children in Rural China

Abstract

An increasing number of left-behind children has emerged in rural China as a result of the large-scale migration of rural farmers to urban cities since the 1990s. With the absence of parent(s) from the family, the left-behind children face crises in socialization and their relationships with their parents are threatened by physical distance. This paper investigates how Chinese left-behind children negotiate the missing roles of parents and how the parent-child relations in such families change over time, through in-depth case studies of two left-behind children with different family backgrounds in rural Henan province.

Abstract

This study examines the long-run impact of remittances on economic growth in Bangladesh. Bangladesh, being one of the top remittance-recipient countries in the world, has drawn attention to the remittance-output relationship in recent years. In 2014, remittances contributed to 8.2% of GDP of Bangladesh while the contribution was 6.7% in 2006. The main objective of this study is to investigate the impact of the remittance on economic growth (GDP). We adopted Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) models or dynamic linear regressions are widely used to examine the relationship between remittances and economic growth in the country. In testing for the unit root properties of the time series data, all variables are found stationary at first differencing level under the ADF and PP stationary tests. The study made use of diagnostic tests such as the residual normality test, heteroskedacity and serial autocorrelation tests for misspecification in order to validate the parameter estimation outcomes achieved by the estimated model. The stability test of the model is also checked by CUSUM test. The ARDL model presents that there exist a statistically significant long run positive relationship between remittance and economic growth of gross domestic product in Bangladesh.

240. Creating a Multicultural Curriculum in Han-Dominant Schools: The Policy and Practice of Ethnic Solidarity Education in China

Abstract

In response to the recent heightened interethnic conflicts that were regarded as threatening national unity and stability, the Chinese government issued "ethnic solidarity education" as a top-down, centrally administered mandate to be implemented "correctly" and in a standardised way by schools throughout China. This paper examines the policy and practice of ethnic solidarity education against the broader, historical context of ethnic relations in China. Based on empirical data obtained through extensive fieldwork in selective Beijing public schools, this study concludes that ethnic solidarity education bears resemblance to multicultural education in the western educational discourse, yet retains special characteristics as an indigenous form of education in the unique Chinese context. Although various teaching and extracurricular activities involving ethnic elements are added to the school curriculum and applauded by the Chinese educators and policymakers as important signs of ethnic integration and cultural pluralism, they tend to focus on static cultural artefacts without touching upon the deeper levels of understandings on ethnicity and the majority-minority relations, and therefore cannot create a truly multicultural learning environment.
