217. Zhou Enlai and the Establishment of Cooperative Relations between China and Cambodia, 1954-1965.

Abstract

From 1954 to 1965, the relations between China and Cambodia were the paradigm of China's diplomatic relations with her neighboring countries. Zhou Enlai played a key part in establishing the friendship between China and Cambodia. At the Geneva Conference, Zhou Enlai first got in touch with the Cambodian delegation, and at the Bandung Conference, he met Sihanouk for the first time. Since 1956, China launched her financial support for Cambodia, and in 1958, the two countries established formal diplomatic relations. Zhou Enlai visited Cambodia in person and held several rounds of talks with Sihanouk, explaining to him China's Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, guaranteeing to him, on behave of Chinese government, the security of Cambodia, and showing to him Chinas steadfast support for Cambodia's fight for national independence. In the 1950s and 1960s, China and Cambodia established and maintained friendly bilateral relations. Leaders of the two countries coordinated and cooperated with one another in a series of international issues. This is a success story of Zhou Enlai's diplomacy, a story that will enable us to have a glimpse at some of the features of China's diplomacy during the Cold War. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article traces the evolution of Sino-Romanian relation during the 1950s and 1970s, emphasizing the influence of Sino-Soviet relation on the Chinese-Romanian partnership. It argues that "anti-revisionism" was a key consideration in Mao Zedong's policy toward Eastern Europe and that the common desire to resist Soviet hegemony drove China and Romania together after 1963. It also highlights the limits in Sino-Romanian cooperation because the events of 1968 taught the Romanians that at a time of emergency such as a Soviet military invasion, Beijing could offer limited help. Abstract: Sustainable manufacturing has received enormous attention in recent years as an effective solution to support the continuous growth and expansion of manufacturing industry. In this paper, we present a three dimensional system approach for sustainable manufacturing from environmental perspective. This method attempts to address the sustainability issues of manufacturing from a pollution prevention standpoint, considering the three key components of manufacturing: technology, energy, and material. Case study is performed on an emerging nano-manufacturing technology, atomic layer deposition. Abstract

Herein, a polyurethane acrylate-based TiO2 (PU-TiO2) was fabricated using a two-step method. First, a polyurethane prepolymer was prepared. Second, PU-TiO2 was prepared using amino-modified TiO2 (A-TiO2). The best synthesis process of the polyurethane prepolymer was when the reaction temperature was 80 °C, the reaction time was 3 h and the R-value of the polyurethane acrylate was 2. Next, the influence of the A-TiO2 content on the structure and performance of PU-TiO2 was examined. The analysis of the rheological properties of the PU-TiO2 ink indicated that its viscosity gradually increased as the A-TiO2 content increased. The tensile performance of film improved because of the presence of A-TiO2. The photo-polymerisation and photo-rheological performance indicated that the PU-TiO2 structure changed from a hyperbranched structure with TiO2 as the core to a segmented structure, as the A-TiO2 content was 3%. Abstract

The article presents a study on the cognitive ability of 22 forward players of basketball teams from Liaoning, Heilongjiang, and Jilin in China. The study uses several methods including psychological measurements and statistics. Results show the significance of the forward players' three cognitive indexes including time perception and step times with the difference of guard players in the indexes. The relation of the forward players' operational thinking time to their technical effect is noted.

238. Life cycle assessment of a wave energy converter: Uncertainties and sensitivities.

Abstract

Producing electricity from renewable energy does not necessarily mean cleanness and sustainability, hence the associated with environmental impacts should be paid attention to and thoroughly investigated. This study presents an LCA of the prototype buoy-rope-drum (BRD) WEC, and systematic uncertainty and sensitivity analyses, to increase understanding of the uncertainties and sensitivities of the life cycle impact variations to the inputs, method choices, as well as changes of selected key issues. The IMPACT 2002+ method is used for a full LCA, including mid-point, end-point and single-score impact assessments. The Monte Carlo (MC) method is applied for the uncertainty analysis for the propagating effects of input variations on the output life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) results. Beyond scope of IMPACT 2002+, we investigated the uncertainties due to variations of maritime climate and interactions between the device and surrounding ecosystems. Analytical and scenario analyses are adopted to conduct the sensitivity analyses. The uncertainty analysis shows that our LCIA results have reasonable uncertainties to the input variations. Ionizing radiation and human health are found to have the largest 95% confidence intervals among mid-point and end-point impacts. The results also suggest that future installation location associated with uncertainties from in-situ maritime climate, interactions with surrounding ecosystems, etc., should be investigated. The results of the sensitivity analysis show that the maximum sensitivity is the variation of Ozone layer depletion due to 20% increment of buoy steel weight. Furthermore, the choices of impact assessment methods are found to have influence to the results, mainly due to differences of embedded time horizons in these methods. Carefully dealing with the quality of input data and choices of appropriate methods will help reduce the instability and improve the level of overall reliability of the LCIA results. Abstract

Spin glasses (SG) exhibit many of the common properties of glassy behavior: a phase transition at T [subscript g], gradual freezing below T [subscript g], and an out-of-equilibrium aging sensitive to initial conditions. The work in this dissertation focuses on four effects: glassy dynamics in SG thin films, magnetic field effects on SG dynamics, classification of aging rates of the SG correlation length, and SG temperature chaos. The experiments were performed on the canonical metallic SG, CuMn, studied in multilayer thin films, and on a CuMn single crystal. The beauty of working with a thin film geometry lies with the growing correlation length ξ⊥(t) saturating at the thin film thickness L on laboratory time scales, thereby creating a quasi-equilibrium state. From studying the crossover dynamics on 4.5, 9 and 20 nm thin films, a thermal activation picture was developed to describe the dynamics after dimensional crossover: from ξ⊥(t) < L (three dimensional) to ξ⊥(t) = L (two dimensional). The maximum free energy barrier height governing the dynamics scales as ℓnL, compatible with power law dynamics of the Parisi mean field solution, and not the activated dynamics of the droplet model of Fisher and Huse. The freezing temperature T [subscript f] < T [subscript g] in thin films was studied systematically and related to the observation time scale. The free energy barrier heights are reduced by an external magnetic field, enabling us to obtain the number of correlated spins in the 20 nm CuMn multilayer sample. The geometry of the correlated spins is found to be “pancake-like” or cylindrical in the thin films. In order to remove the finite size constraint on the growth of SG correlation length ξ⊥(t), aging rates were extracted from long time aging experiments on a single crystal CuMn sample. The extracted correlation length is roughly 200 lattice spacing, the largest ever achieved. The results were compared with large scale numerical simulation from the Janus Collaboration, and an almost perfect match was found. The aging rates slows down as the SG correlation length increases, indicated by T = 0 fixed point dynamics. Benefiting from quasi-equilibrium states in thin films after dimensional crossover, temperature chaos, the sensitivity of spin glass equilibrium state to external temperature changes, was explored in the 9 nm and 20 nm multilayer CuMn thin films. The results have been rather counterintuitive. The observable effective waiting time differs with respect to different cooling protocols. A deeper understanding of temperature chaos requires further investigation.

248. Life Cycle Assessment of a Buoy-Rope-Drum Wave Energy Converter.

Abstract

This study presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) study for a buoy-rope-drum (BRD) wave energy converter (WEC), so as to understand the environmental performance of the BRD WEC by eco-labeling its life cycle stages and processes. The BRD WEC was developed by a research group at Shandong University (Weihai). The WEC consists of three main functional modules including buoy, generator and mooring modules. The designed rated power capacity is 10 kW. The LCA modeling is based on data collected from actual design, prototype manufacturing, installation and onsite sea test. Life cycle inventory (LCI) analysis and life cycle impact analysis (LCIA) were conducted. The analyses show that the most significant environmental impact contributor is identified to be the manufacturing stage of the BRD WEC due to consumption of energy and materials. Potential improvement approaches are proposed in the discussion. The LCI and LCIA assessment results are then benchmarked with results from reported LCA studies of other WECs, tidal energy converters, as well as offshore wind and solar PV systems. This study presents the energy and carbon intensities and paybacks with 387 kJ/kWh, 89 gCO2/kWh, 26 months and 23 months respectively. The results show that the energy and carbon intensities of the BRD WEC are slightly larger than, however comparable, in comparison with the referenced WECs, tidal, offshore wind and solar PV systems. A sensitivity analysis was carried out by varying the capacity factor from 20–50%. The energy and carbon intensities could reach as much as 968 kJ/kWh and 222 gCO2/kWh respectively while the capacity factor decreasing to 20%.
