207. Predictive Significance of Day-to-Day Blood Pressure Variability in Acute Ischemic Stroke for 12-Month Functional Outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on the association between blood pressure (BP) variability in acute ischemic stroke and functional outcomes have yielded conflicting results. We aimed to investigate the predictive significance of day-to-day BP variability during the 7 days following stroke onset for functional outcomes at 12 months. METHODS: A total of 229 patients (male 68.8%, mean age 66.7 ± 13.0 years) within 24 hours after onset were prospectively studied. The first 24 hours and day-to-day BP variability, including the SD, coefficient variation (CV), average real variation, and ΔBP (difference between the maximum and minimum BP), were derived and compared to functional outcomes. The functional outcomes were accessed using the baseline severityadjusted analysis at 12 months post-stroke. RESULTS: The patients with poor outcomes at 12 months had significantly higher morning systolic BP (SBP; 1-3 days after onset) than those with good outcomes. The day-to-day SBP variability parameters (1-7 days) such as SD, CV, and ΔSBP were significantly higher in the patients with poor outcomes than in those with good outcomes (17.0 ± 6.0 vs. 14.8 ± 5.3 mm Hg, 11.8 ± 3.9 vs. 10.6 ± 3.5, 48.3 ± 17.7 vs. 39.9 ± 15.5 mm Hg, respectively; P < 0.05). After adjustment for demographic and clinical features, day-to-day Δ SBP was associated with poorer functional outcomes at 12 months (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval: 1.547, 1.097-2.181). Even after adjusting for the mean SBP, Δ SBP was independently associated with 12-month poor functional outcomes (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval: 1.577, 1.095-2.272). Abstract

The present study was designed to investigate the chemical constituents of Lindera nacusua and their antitumor activities. A new phenolic glycoside, namely 1-O-3-hydroxyphenyl-5-methoxyphenol-(6′-O-vanilloyl)-β-d-glucopyranoside (1), together with five known phenolic glycosides (2–6), two anthraquinones (7, 8) and two γ-butanolides (9, 10), was isolated, and its structure was elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods. Compounds 1–10 were screened for their in vitro cytotoxicities against HL-60, SMMC-7721, A549, MCF-3 and SW480 cell lines by the MTS method. Compounds 9 and 10 showed moderate cytotoxicities with IC50 values ranging from 17.40 to 35.21 μM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To study the characteristics of blood dynamic parameters in pregnant women with anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) and a history of adversely pregnant complications.The study included a prospective cohort of pregnant women with (272 cases) and without (186 cases) aCL. Among the aCL positive pregnant women, 91 cases had the history of adversely pregnant complications including spontaneous abortion, still fetus. Serum antibodies to cardiolipin (CL) were measured by a specific enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Blood dynamics parameters were measured by non-invasive cardiovascular parameters surveyor (TP-CBS).The women were divided into three groups: group A (91 cases)included women with both the history of adversely pregnant complications and positive aCL, group B (181 cases) with positive aCL alone and group C (186 cases) without either of them. In group A maximum blood viscosity (Vmax) was (4.7 +/- 0.5) mPa x s and in group B it was (4.6 +/- 0.7) mPa x s. Both was higher than normal. In group B the Vmax was higher (P0.05) than in group C [(4.4 +/- 0.4) mPa x s]. The wave form coefficient(K) was different in three groups: group A was 0.41 +/- 0.04, group B was 0.39 +/- 0.05 and group C was 0.39 +/- 0.04. In group A their wave form coefficient was higher than in group B (P0.05). Their total peripheral resistance (TPR) was higher (P0.05) in group A [(1.3 +/- 0.4) mm Hg x s x ml(-1)] than in group B [(1.2 +/- 0.4) mm Hg x s x ml(-1)]. The cardiac index (CI) was in group A [(43 +/- 15) ml/(s x m(2))], in group B [(48 +/- 16) ml/(s x m(2))] and in group C [(48 +/- 14) ml/(s x m(2))], lower in group A than in group B (P0.05).An important change of blood dynamic parameters of pregnant women with aCL is the increase of Vmax. If Vmax, K and TPR were increased and CI was decreased simultaneously in women with aCL, it would result in more chances of adversely pregnant complications. Measuring the blood dynamics parameters will help us discover the sub-clinical hypercoagulable state of patients with aCL and guide us to treat them promptly, so that to improve successful pregnancy rate.

Abstract

Spiral waves arise in many biological, chemical, and physiological systems. The kinematical model can be used to describe the motion of the spiral arms approximated as curves in the plane. For this model, there appeared some results in the literature. However, these results all are based upon some simplification on the model or prior phenomenological assumptions on the solutions. In this paper, we use really full kinematic model to classify a generic kind of steadily rotating spiral waves, i.e., with positive (or negative) curvature. In fact, using our results (Theorem 8), we can answer the following questions: Is there any steadily rotating spiral wave for a given weakly excitable medium? If yes, what kind of information we can know about these spiral waves? e.g., the tip's curvature, the tip's tangential velocity, and the rotating frequency. Comparing our results with previous ones in the literature, there are some differences between them. There are only solutions with monotonous curvatures via simplified model but full model admits solutions with any given oscillating number of the curvatures.

220. Factors Affecting Consumer Acceptance of an Online Health Information Portal Among Young Internet Users

Abstract

Despite the proliferation of health and nursing informatics applications in the past decade, factors influencing consumer acceptance of the applications are not well understood. This study was conducted to investigate factors affecting acceptance of a consumer-used nursing informatics application (ie, online health information portal) within the framework of the Technology Acceptance Model. A cross-sectional study was conducted in which 201 Chinese young adults were invited to participate in usability testing with a typical health information portal and to complete a self-report questionnaire measuring the model's constructs and five hypothesized variables drawn from consumer and portal characteristics. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to test research hypotheses. Fifteen of the 22 research hypotheses were supported. Perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness predicted satisfaction and behavioral intention, respectively, over and above the portal and consumer characteristics examined in the study. All portal and consumer characteristics had significant, although varied, impacts on the original model constructs. This study demonstrated that an adapted Technology Acceptance Model, extended with portal and consumer characteristics, provides an effective means to understand consumer acceptance of health portals. The findings hold important implications for design and implementation strategies to increase the likelihood of acceptance of consumer-used nursing informatics applications.

Abstract

The paper is concerned with designing a first order derivative estimator of a signal based on the concept of variable structure and adaptive control techniques. A PI controller is incorporated in a variable structure scheme so that the upper bound of the steady state derivative estimation error is reduced. The proposed adaptive integral variable structure derivative estimator can be used as a direct differentiator for a smooth signal with bounded derivative. An adaptive algorithm of the switching gain is also incorporated in order to remove the requirement for a priori knowledge about the upper bound of the derivative of observed signal. The upper bound of the derivative estimation error using proposed estimating scheme is computed in order to compare with that of an existing estimator, the adaptive variable structure derivative estimator. An example is demonstrated for showing the advantages of the proposed method.

Abstract

Two new amido-bridged complexes, dimeric [Mn III (L)(H 2 O)] 2 ·6H 2 O ( 1 ), and two-dimensional (2D) [K(MeOH) 2 Mn III Cu II (L) 2 ] ( 2 ) (H 3 L = 1-(2-hydroxybenzamido)-2-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)amino)ethane) have been prepared and characterized by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis and magnetic measurements. Structural analysis shows that complex 1 is a phenoxo-bridged Mn(III) dimer, and complex 2 possesses 1D chains of amido-bridged alternate [Mn(L)] and [Cu(L)] − units, which are further linked by K + ions giving rise to a 2D layered structure. Magnetic studies reveal that complex 1 exhibits intermetallic ferromagnetic coupling, while complex 2 shows antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu(II) and high-spin Mn(III). The χ m T ∼ T curves of complexes 1 – 2 have been well fitted based on dinuclear models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on the two-dimensional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equations with a general flux function. The aim is at the global (in time) well-posedness of the initial-and boundary-value problem for these equations defined in the upper half-plane. Under suitable growth conditions on the flux function, we are able to establish the global well-posedness in a Sobolev class. When the initial- and boundarydata become more regular, the corresponding solutions are shown to be classical. In addition, the continuous dependence on the data is also obtained.
