201. Electron-ion collisions at RHIC using a high intensity self-polarizing electron ring

Abstract

We consider the design of an electron-ion collider realized by adding a self-polarizing electron ring to the existing RHIC collider. It would provide polarized electron-proton and unpolarized electron-ion beam collisions in the center of mass energy range of 30-100 GeV and at luminosities up to 10/sup 33/ cm/sup -2/s/sup -1/ for e-p and 10/sup 31/ cm/sup -2/s/sup -1/ for e-Au collisions. An electron storage ring lattice has been developed which provides a short polarization time for an electron beam in the 5-10 GeV energy range and which satisfies the luminosity goals. We describe the modifications to the RHIC interaction region layout required for both efficient beam separation and also for longitudinal electron and proton beam polarization at the collision point.

Abstract

The review of the SND results of the e+e− → π+π−π0 process study in the energy range s = 0.42 − 1.38 GeV at VEPP‐2M collider, based on about 2 × 106 selected events, is presented. The total cross section, parameters of the ρ, ω, φ, resonances, and ω′, ω″ states were obtained. It was found that ρπ and ωπ0 intermediate states describe the reaction dynamics. The experimental data cannot be described by a sum of only ω, φ, ω′ and ω″ resonances contributions. This can be interpreted as a manifestation of the ρ → 3π decay, suppressed by G‐parity, with relative probability B(ρ → 3π) = (1.01 ±0.360.54±0.034) × 10−4.

Abstract

The process e+e− → π0γ in the energy range s = 0.60 – 1.06 GeV was studied at VEPP‐2M collider with SND detector using ∼ 14 pb−1 of integrated luminosity. Data were analyzed in the framework of the vector meson dominance model. Preliminary results on obtained cross‐section and parameters of ρ0, ω, φ → π0γ radiative decays are presented.

Abstract

The anomalous magnetic moment of the negative muon has been measured to a precision of 0.7 parts per million (ppm) at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. This result is based on data collected in 2001, and is over an order of magnitude more precise than the previous measurement of the negative muon. The result a_mu= 11 659 214(8)(3) \times 10^{-10} (0.7 ppm), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is sytematic, is consistend with previous measurements of the anomaly for the positive and negative muon. The average for the muon anomaly a_{mu}(exp) = 11 659 208(6) \times 10^{-10} (0.5ppm)., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters, revised to reflect referee comments. Abstract

The cross section of the process ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ was measured in the Spherical Neutral Detector (SND) experiment at the VEPP-2M collider in the energy region $\sqrt{s}$ below 980 MeV. This measurement was based on about $1.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ selected events. The obtained cross section was analyzed together with the SND and DM2 data in the energy region $\sqrt{s}$ up to 2 GeV. The $\ensuremath{\omega}$-meson parameters ${m}_{\ensuremath{\omega}}=782.79\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.09\mathrm{MeV},$ ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\omega}}=8.68\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15\mathrm{MeV},$ and $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\omega}}3\ensuremath{\pi})=1615\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}57\mathrm{nb}$ were obtained. It was found that the experimental data cannot be described by a sum of only $\ensuremath{\omega},$ $\ensuremath{\varphi},$ ${\ensuremath{\omega}}^{\ensuremath{'}},$ and ${\ensuremath{\omega}}^{\ensuremath{''}}$ resonance contributions. This can be interpreted as a manifestation of $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\rho}}3\ensuremath{\pi}$ decay, suppressed by G parity, with a relative probability $B(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\rho}}3\ensuremath{\pi}{)=(1.01}_{\ensuremath{-}0.36}^{+0.54}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.034)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}.$

A spin‐orbital function formalism is described. The formalism was realized in ASPIRRIN code that does beam polarization calculations at the first order. The code has been used for calculating equlibrium polarization and polarization time in electron rings with the complex geometry of applied magnetic fields as well for resonance strength analysis for proton accelerators.

Abstract

The results of extensive investigation of beam dynamics with high current in BEP booster are presented. Strong bunch lengthening due to the potential well distortion by the inductive impedance was observed on the background of the multiple intrabeam scattering and of the ion accumulation (in the e/sup -/ beam). The octupole and sextupole corrections enabled control of collective damping of the head-tail modes. Fast damping is also observed at zero chromaticity, this is attributed to the injection kickers acting as transmission lines. The proper tuning of the nonlinearity corrections cures the transverse instabilities and enables capability to store up to 0.8A current in a single bunch. >

This paper describes dynamic aperture limitation of VEPP-2M in round beam operation due to chromaticity correction sextupoles and a way of lattice optimisation. First order canonical perturbation theory is used to estimate influence of sextupoles on dynamic aperture. The estimates are compared with tracking results.

Abstract

The cross section of the process $e^+e^-\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ was measured in the Spherical Neutral Detector experiment at the VEPP-2M collider in the energy region $\sqrt[]{s} = 980 \div 1380$ MeV. The measured cross section, together with the $e^+e^-\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $\omega\pi^+\pi^-$ cross sections obtained in other experiments, was analyzed in the framework of the generalized vector meson dominance model. It was found that the experimental data can be described by a sum of $\omega$, $\phi$ mesons and two $\omega^\prime$ and $\omega^{\prime\prime}$ resonances contributions, with masses $m_{\omega^\prime}\sim 1490$,$m_{\omega^{\prime\prime}}\sim 1790$ MeV and widths $\Gamma_{\omega^\prime}\sim 1210$, $\Gamma_{\omega^{\prime\prime}}\sim 560$ MeV. The analysis of the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectra in the energy region $\sqrt[]{s}$ from 1100 to 1380 MeV has shown that for their descriptionone should take into account the $e^+e^-\to\omega\pi^0\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ mechanism also. The phase between the amplitudes corresponding to the $e^+e^-\to\omega\pi$ and $e^+e^-\to\rho\pi$ intermediate states was measured for the first time. The value of the phase is close to zero and depends on energy.

Abstract

The invariant mass spectra of the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ pairs in the process ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ were studied in the Spherical Neutral Detector experiment at the VEPP-2M collider in the energy region $\sqrt{s}\ensuremath{\simeq}1020$ MeV. These studies were based on about $0.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ events. The spectra were analyzed in the framework of the vector meson dominance model. It was found that the experimental data can be described assuming the ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\rho}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ transition only. An upper limit on the branching ratio of the $\ensuremath{\varphi}(1020)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ decay through intermediate states different from $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\pi}$ was obtained at the $90%$ confidence level: $B(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\varphi}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})l6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}.$ The \ensuremath{\rho}-meson mass and width which follow from the spectra analysis are ${m}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}=775.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3$ MeV, ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}=150.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.0$ MeV. The mass difference of the neutral and charged $\ensuremath{\rho}$ mesons was found to equal ${m}_{{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}}\ensuremath{-}{m}_{{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{0}}=\ensuremath{-}1.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.3$ MeV. In the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ mass spectrum the $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\omega}$ interference was seen at a two standard deviation level.

Abstract

A higher precision measurement of the anomalous g value, a_mu = (g-2)/2, for the positive muon has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, based on data collected in the year 2000. The result a_{mu^+} = 11 659 204(7)(5) times 10^{-10} (0.7 ppm) is in good agreement with previous measurements and has an error about one half that of the combined previous data. Abstract

The Cryogenic Magnetic Detector (CMD‐2) and main it’s parameters are shortly described. The results for the cross sections of e+e− annihilation into hadrons are presented in the c.m. energy range from 0.37 to 1.39 GeV. The total integrated luminosity of about 31 pb−1 has been collected. The new results for the ρ and ω meson parameters were obtained. The pion form factor was determinated with a 0.6% systematic uncertainty. The major decay modes of the φ meson as well as multihadron final states have been studied in a broad energy range.

Since December 2010 the CMD-3 detector has taken data at the electron-positron collider VEPP-2000. The collected data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 60 pb−1 in the c.m. energy from 0.32 up to 2 GeV. The preliminary results of the luminosity measurement are presented in various energy ranges. The current accuracy for integrated luminosity is estimated to be 1%.

Abstract

The cross sections of the processes $e^+e^- \to K^+K^-$, $e^+e^- \to K_SK_L$ and $e^+e^- \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ were measured in the SND experiment at the VEPP-2M collider in the energy region near the $\phi(1020)$ meson. These measurements were based on about $10^6$ $K^+K^-$, $0.5 \times 10^6$ $K_SK_L$ and $0.4 \times 10^6$ $\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ selected events. Themeasured cross sections have been analyzed in the framework of the vector meson dominance model and the main parameters of the $\phi$-resonance were obtained, such as its mass, width, the production cross section and branching ratios of the main decay modes. The measured value of the $\phi$ meson total width, $\Gamma_{\phi} = 4.21 \pm 0.04$ is lower than the present world average of $4.458 \pm 0.032$ MeV. Contributions in addition to the conventional vector meson dominance model were found in the $e^+e^- \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ reaction cross section.

Abstract

The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory has the goal of determining the muon anomalous g-value a(mu) ( = (g - 2)/2) to the very high precision of 0.35 parts per million and thus requires a storage ring magnet with great stability and homogeniety. A superferric storage ring with a radius of 7.11 m and a magnetic field of 1.45 T has been constructed in which the field quality is largely determined by the iron, and the excitation is provided by superconducting coils operating at a current of 5200 A. The storage ring has been constructed with maximum attention to azimuthal symmetry and to tight mechanical tolerances and with many features to allow obtaining a homogenous magnetic field. Abstract

First results on polarization measurement are presented. More sophisticated scheme of polarimeter is proposed. It is expected that the accuracy of the measurement of polarization of the circulated electron beam of about 20% will be achieved during 8 minutes of operation of this Moller polarimeter. Abstract

The muon g-2 experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is described, including its motivation, goal and present status. The latest result based on 1998 data is aμ+=g−2/2=11 659 191(59)×10−10 (5 ppm), where the error is primarily statistical. This value agrees with the present theoretical value. Data obtained thus far and now being analyzed should have a statistical error of about 0.5 ppm.

Abstract

This article discusses tests of CPT and Lorentz invariance with data from the muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. According to an extension of the Standard Model by Kostelecky et al., CPT/Lorentz violating terms in the Lagrangian induce a shift of the anomaly frequency omega_a of muons in a magnetic field. This shift is predicted to be different for positive and negative muons and to oscillate with the Earth's sidereal frequency. Abstract

A general approach to the analysis of spin motion in realistic accelerator fields is presented. A method of finding the “spin closed orbit” and spin tune in arbitrary field configurations is given. It is shown that spin-orbital resonances perturb the spin motion and can cause depolarization. Methods of safe resonance crossing for protons are presented, including schemes with a few Siberian snakes and spin rotators in the rings. The effects of radiation on the spin of electrons are considered and illustrated by experiences in electron storage rings in the energy range from 500 MeV to 60 GeV.

Abstract

A new measurement of the positive muon's anomalous magnetic moment has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron using the direct injection of polarized muons into the superferric storage ring. The angular frequency difference omega_{a} between the angular spin precession frequency omega_{s} and the angular orbital frequency omega_{c} is measured as well as the free proton NMR frequency omega_{p}. These determine R = omega_{a} / omega_{p} = 3.707~201(19) times 10^{-3}. With mu_{mu} / mu_{p} = 3.183~345~39(10) this gives a_{mu^+} = 11~659~191(59) times 10^{-10} (pm 5 ppm), in good agreement with the previous CERN and BNL measurements for mu^+ and mu^-, and with the standard model prediction., 4 pages, 4 figures. accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

The new muon (g−2) experiment at BNL aims at a final precision of 0.35 ppm on the muon anomaly. The experiment has completed four runs beginning in 1997 and has sub-ppm data on tape. Analyzed data include a published 13 ppm result from our initial commissioning run and a recently completed 5 ppm result from our 1998 initial muon injection run. We are actively working on the remainder of the data analysis and on systematic studies.

Abstract

We report on first measurements with polarized electrons stored in a medium-energy ring and with a polarized internal target. Polarized electrons were injected at 442 MeV (653 MeV), and a partial (full) Siberian snake was employed to preserve the polarization. Longitudinal polarization at the interaction point and polarization lifetime of the stored electrons were determined with laser backscattering. Spin observables were measured for electrodisintegration of polarized He-3, with simultaneous detection of scattered electrons, protons, neutrons, deuterons, and He-3 nuclei, over a large phase space.

Abstract

We report on the results of studies of the longitudinal electron polarization in the AmPS storage ring at NIKHEF. The ring was operated using a partial Siberian snake at the first magic energy, and a full Siberian snake between 440 MeV and 720 MeV. We have investigated the effect of high beam currents in the ring, and found that some of the electron polarization is lost if the beam current becomes larger than ≈120 mA.

Abstract

The decay $K_S^0 \to \pi e \nu$ has been observed by the CMD-2 detector at the e^+e^- collider VEPP-2M at Novosibirsk. Of 6 million produced $K_L^0K_S^0$ pairs, $75 \pm 13$ events of the $K_S^0 \to \pi e \nu$ decay were selected. The corresponding branching ratio is $B(K_S^0 \to \pi e \nu)=(7.2 \pm 1.4)\times10^{-4}$. This result is consistent with the evaluation of $B(K_S^0 \to \pi e \nu)$ from the $K_L^0$ semileptonic rate and $K_S^0$ lifetime assuming $\Delta S=\Delta Q$ ., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, LaTex2e. Abstract

First results of the study of the process e+e- \to 4\pi by the CMD-2 collaboration at VEPP-2M are presented for the energy range 1.05--1.38 GeV. Using an integrated luminosity of 5.8 pb^{-1}, energy dependence of the processes e+e- \to \pi^+\pi^- 2\pi^0 and e+e- \to 2\pi^+ 2\pi^- has been measured. Analysis of the differential distributions demonstrates the dominance of the a_1\pi and \omega\pi intermediate states. Abstract

A new and improved experiment for measuring the muon magnetic anomaly at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was successfully started and has yielded first results. New major components of the experiment include a superferric storage ring, a superconducting inflector, electrostatic quadrupoles, lead-scintillating fiber electron calorimeters and a high precision NMR magnetic field measurement and control system. The first measurement of the ratio R of the spin precession frequency of the positive muon relative to that of a free proton gives R=(3.707 219±0.000 048)×10−3. It is similar in accuracy and in good agreement with previous CERN measurements for μ+ and μ−. A muon kicker has been installed to boost the number of stored particles in the storage ring magnet and was successfully commissioned recently. The data acquired so far is expected to lower significantly the uncertainty in R. First extensive data-taking will start soon.

Abstract

The muon anomalous magnetic moment has been measured in a new experiment at Brookhaven. Polarized muons were stored in a superferric ring, and the angular frequency difference, {omega}{sub a} , between the spin precession and orbital frequencies was determined by measuring the time distribution of high-energy decay positrons. The ratio R of {omega}{sub a} to the Larmor precession frequency of free protons, {omega}{sub p} , in the storage-ring magnetic field was measured. We find R=3.707thinsp220(48){times}10{sup {minus}3} . With {mu}{sub {mu}}/{mu}{sub p}=3.183thinsp 345thinsp47(47) this gives a{sub {mu}{sup +}}=1thinsp165thinsp 925(15){times}10{sup {minus}9} ({plus_minus}13 ppm ), in good agreement with the previous CERN measurements for {mu}{sup +} and {mu}{sup {minus}} and of approximately the same precision. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

An overview of the polarized electron source used at the NIKHEF accelerator facility is given. Since its first operation in September 1996 we have obtained currents in the source larger than 150 mA, and polarization degrees up to 88%. Approximately 350 hours have been dedicated to physics with a polarized 3He internal target. Using one InGaAsP photocathode, 2 μs long pulses were produced with a current of 2 mA in the local linac, with a polarization degree of 82.5%, at a repetition rate of 1 Hz. Source operations had to be interrupted about every eleventh day for approximately an hour for photocathode reactivation. A photocathode lifetime (1/e) of 180 hours has been achieved.

Abstract

The experiments carried out with the SND detector at VEPP-2M e+e− collider are described. The total integrated luminosity, collected in the energy range around φ(1020) peak is about 4 pb−1 and in the energy range 2E=1040–1400 MeV—6.5 pb−1. Preliminary results are presented for φ(1020) rare decays, including φ→η′γ,ωπo,πoπoγ,ηπoγ, and for η(550) decays η→e+e−,2πo.

Abstract

Preliminary results on the study of e+e- --> phi(1020) --> pi0 pi0 gamma, eta pi0 gamma processes from SND experiment at VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk are presented. Branching ratios of rare radiative phi --> pi0 pi0 gamma and phi --> pi0 eta gamma decays are measured: B(phi --> pi0 pi0 gamma ) = (1.1 +- 0.2) * 10^-4 (invariant mass (pi0 pi0) < 800 MeV), B(phi --> eta pi0 gamma ) = (1.3 +- 0.5) * 10^-4.

The general purpose detector CMD-2 at the VEPP-2M electron-positron collider at Novosibirsk has collected about 11 pb−1 of integrated luminosity in the center-of-mass energy range from 0.36 up to 1.38 GeV. Data in the ρ-meson energy range from 0.61 to 0.96 GeV have been analysed and preliminary results on the e+e−→π+π− cross-section in this energy range are presented.

Abstract

It’s good known the difference in 3.5 sigma between the muon (g – 2) experimental result and its calculation in Standard Model. To clarify this intriguing discrepancy the new stage of muon (g – 2) measurement is under preparation at Fermi National Laboratory. On other hand, regular data taking for measurements of hadron cross section production in e + e − annihilations is under way since December 2010 at the electron-positron collider VEPP-2000 with the CMD-3 and SND detectors. The collected data sample corresponds to about 60 inverse picobarns of integrated luminosity per detector in the energy range from 0.32 up to 2 GeV. Preliminary analysis of various hadronic cross sections has been performed.
