A measurement of direct photon production in 208Pb + 208Pb collisions at 158 A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield or upper limit of direct photons as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.5 < p_T < 4 GeV/c is presented. A significant direct photon excess is observed at p_T > 1.5 GeV/c in central collisions. The results are compared to proton-induced results and to theoretical predictions. Implications for the dynamics of high-energy heavy-ion collisions are discussed. - Abstract
Single crystals of CsI, CsI:Tl, and CsI:Tl, Bi were grown by the vertical Bridgman method. We studied the effect of Bi3+ codoping on the CsI:Tl X-ray-induced afterglow. Thermally stimulated luminescence measurements were carried out in order to investigate the role of traps. The results showed a remarkable reduction of afterglow, of about an order of magnitude, and of trap concentration by Bi codoping. These improvements could be related to a possible role of Bi in the compensation of intrinsic nonstoichiometry defects. (c) 2012 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Transverse energy, charged particle pseudorapidity distributions and photon transverse momentum spectra have been studied as a function of the number of participants (N_{part}) and the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (N_{coll}) in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions over a wide impact parameter range. A scaling of the transverse energy pseudorapidity density at midrapidity as N_{part}^{1.08 \pm 0.06} and N_{coll}^{0.83 \pm 0.05} is observed. For the charged particle pseudorapidity density at midrapidity we find a scaling as N_{part}^{1.07 \pm 0.04} and N_{coll}^{0.82 \pm 0.03}. This faster than linear scaling with N_{part} indicates a violation of the naive Wounded Nucleon Model., 13 pages, 16 figures, submitted to European Physical Journal C (revised results for scaling exponents)

A measurement of direct photon production in 208Pb + 208Pb collisions at 158 A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield of direct photons in central collisions is extracted as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.5 < p_T < 4 GeV/c. A significant direct photon signal, compared to statistical and systematical errors, is seen at p_T > 1.5 GeV/c. The results constitute the first observation of direct photons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions which could be significant for diagnosis of quark gluon plasma formation. A measurement of direct photon production in 208Pb + 208Pb collisions at 158 A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. 231. Effect of Ce doping on scintillation characteristics of LiYF4 single crystals for Î3-ray detection

- Abstract
Effect of Ce content on the Î3-ray response of LiYF4 single crystals with four different Ce concentrations is reported. The LiYF 4 crystals were grown by the micro-pulling down method (Î1⁄4-PD) with Ce content ranged from 0.1 to 10 mol%. The emission spectra of all samples under α-ray (241Am) excitation are due to the Ce3 5d4f transition and are characterized by a band at about 320 nm. The pulse height spectra under Î3-quanta (137Cs) were successfully observed and light yields were evaluated to be about 2800±280 (2 mol%), 3000±300 (5 mol%), and 3700±370 (10 mol%) phs/MeV, respectively. The energy resolution decreased with increasing of Ce concentration as follows: 12±3 (2 mol%), 19±3 (5 mol%), and 30±22 (10 mol%) %, respectively. The α/Î3 ratio were evaluated to be about 0.18 (2 mol%), 0.175 (5 mol%), and 0.15 (10 mol%), respectively. The non-proportionality curve of specimen with Ce 5 mol% doping exhibited good proportionality. Furthermore, the decay time examined with pulsed X-ray irradiation, detected using a streak camera, decreased with increasing of Ce concentration. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

- Abstract
To develop new and efficient neutron scintillator, Ti-doped LiAlO 2 single crystal was grown by micro-pulling-down method. The photoluminescence characteristics including emission spectra, excitation spectra, and decay curves were measured. This material exhibits relatively high light yield, which exceeds that of the Li-glass standard neutron scintillator. There can be a possibility to further increase the efficiency by increasing the dopant concentration. The Ti4 charge transfer luminescence was found to be the leading luminescence process with 2.5 Î1⁄4s decay time. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Neutral pion production in central 158A GeV Pb-208 + Pb-208 collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The pi(0) transverse mass spectrum has been analyzed in terms of a thermal model with hydrodynamic expansion. The high accuracy and large kinematic coverage of the measurement allow one to limit previously noted ambiguities in the extracted freeze-out parameters. The results are shown to be sensitive to the shape of the velocity distribution at freeze-out.

Neutral pion production in central 158AGeV Pb+Pb collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The pi0 transverse mass spectrum has been analyzed in terms of a thermal model with hydrodynamic expansion. The high accuracy and large kinematic coverage of the measurement allow to limit previously noted ambiguities in the extracted freeze-out parameters. The results are shown to be sensitive to the shape of the velocity distribution at freeze-out. - Abstract
To measure the flux of atmospheric neutrons and study the neutron contribution to the background of the main detector of the PoGOLite (Polarized Gamma-ray Observer) balloon-borne experiment, a thermal-neutron detector with a phoswich system of LiCaAlF6 (Eu) and BGO crystal scintillators is developed. The performance to separate thermal-neutron events from those of gamma-rays and charged particles is validated with 252Cf on ground. The detector is attached to the PoGOLite instrument and is launched in 2011 from the Esrange facility in the North of Sweden. Although the emission wavelength of the LiCaAlF6 (Ce) is 300 nm and overlaps with the absorption wavelength of the BGO, the phoswich capability of the LiCaAlF6 (Ce) with the BGO is also confirmed with installing a waveform shifter., QC 20120210

- Abstract
Doubly-doped BaY2F8:Tm, Nd scintillation crystals were grown by modified micro-pulling-down method. Nd co-doping was chosen to enhance the energy transfer from the host lattice to the Nd3+ luminescence center via the 5d-levels of Tm3+, due to the overlap of Tm3+ 5d-4f emission spectrum with the Nd3+ 4f-5d absorption. The energy transfer was clearly evidenced in the BaY2F8: Tm, Nd. This process is not complicated by an energy migration to killer centers and/or cross-relaxation. The radioluminescence process is complicated by an energy transfer from the host lattice exciton states to the lower f-levels of Tm3+ ion.

The production of neutral pions in 158A GeV Pb-208 + Pb-208 collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). Transverse momentum spectra are studied for the range 0.3 less than or equal to m(T) - m(0) less than or equal to 4.0 GeV/c. The results for central collisions are compared to various models. The centrality dependence of the neutral pion spectral shape and yield is investigated. An invariance of the spectral shape and a simple scaling of the yield with the number of participating nucleons is observed for centralities with greater than about 30 participating nucleons. This is most naturally explained by assuming an equilibrated system. [S0031-9007(98)07532-2].

The directed flow of protons and positive pions have been studied in 158 A GeV Pb + Pb collisions. A directed flow analysis of the rapidity dependence of the average transverse momentum projected onto the reaction plane is presented for semi-central collisions with impact parameters of approximately 8 fm, where the flow effect is largest. The magnitude of the directed flow is found to be significantly smaller than observed at AGS energies and than RQMD model predictions. The directed flow of protons and positive pions have been studied in 158 A GeV Pb + Pb collisions. A directed flow analysis of the rapidity dependence of the average transverse momentum projected onto the reaction plane is presented for semi-central collisions with impact parameters of approximately 8 fm, where the flow effect is largest. The magnitude of the directed flow is found to be significantly smaller than observed at AGS energies and than RQMD model predictions. The directed flow of protons and positive pions have been studied in 158 A GeV Pb + Pb collisions.
