This study established indicators for the development of scientific imagination (SI) via digital storytelling (DS) and developed and validated a scale for DS-based scientific imagination (DSSI) to understand how it develops in elementary school students. Two samples of fourth- to sixth-grade students in Taiwan participated in a development test, one for item revision and the other for validation. Samples 1 and 2 included 303 and 806 students, respectively. DSSI indicators were constructed based on assessments of SI constructs and its three stages, as well as the framework and rubrics of e-learning DS. Then a DSSI instrument was developed with five dimensions: brainstorming, dynamic adjustment, virtual practise, practise, and presentation. Item analyses were conducted to confirm multiple validities through two-stage sampling via Rasch analyses. The five constructs showed good model fit. Thus, all items were found to be suitable for examining the five dimensions, which provided the validity of the content and structure. Regarding generalizability, the results of the DSSI instrument did not differ by gender. However, student ability was lower than the item difficulty in the five dimensions, indicating that they had reached only a low level of DSSI ability. Pedagogical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Self‐monitoring in tumor therapy is a concept that allows for real‐time monitoring of the location and state of applied nanomaterials. This monitoring relies on dynamic signals, such as wave or magnetic signals, which vary in response to changes in the location and state of nanomaterials. Dynamic changes in nanomaterials can be monitored using dynamic signals, making it possible to determine and control the treatment process. Theranostic nanomaterials, which possess unique physical and chemical properties, have recently been explored as a viable option for self‐monitoring. With the help of self‐monitoring, theranostic nanomaterials can guide themselves to achieve region‐selective treatment with higher controllability and safety. In this review, self‐monitoring theranostic nanomaterials will be introduced in three parts according to their roles during therapy: tumor accumulation, tumor therapy, and metabolism. The limitations and future challenges of current self‐monitoring theranostic nanomaterials will also be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Emerging three-dimensional digital visualization technology (DVT) provides more advantages than traditional microscopy in microsurgery; however, its impact on microsurgeons' visual and nervous systems and delicate microsurgery is still unclear, which hinders the wider implementation of DVT in digital visualization for microsurgery. Methods and material: Forty-two microsurgeons from the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center were enrolled in this prospective selfcontrolled study. Each microsurgeon consecutively performed 30 min conjunctival sutures using a three-dimensional digital display and a microscope, respectively. Visual function, autonomic nerve activity, and subjective symptoms were evaluated before and immediately after the operation. Visual functions, including accommodative lag, accommodative amplitude, near point of convergence and contrast sensitivity function (CSF), were measured by an expert optometrist. Heart rate variability was recorded by a wearable device for monitoring autonomic nervous activity. Subjective symptoms were evaluated by questionnaires. Microsurgical performance was assessed by the video-based Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skill (OSATS) tool. Results: Accommodative lag decreased from 0.63 (0.18) diopters (D) to 0.55 (0.16) D (P=0.014), area under the log contrast sensitivity function increased from 1.49 (0.15) to 1.52 (0.14) (P=0.037), and heart rate variability decreased from 36.00 (13.54) milliseconds (ms) to 32.26 (12.35) ms (P=0.004) after using the DVT, but the changes showed no differences compared to traditional microscopy (P>0.05). No statistical significance was observed for global OSATS scores between the two rounds of operations [mean difference, 0.05 (95% CI: -1.17 to 1.08) points; P=0.95]. Subjective symptoms were quite mild after using both techniques. Conclusions: The impact of DVT-based procedures on microsurgeons includes enhanced accommodation and sympathetic activity, but the changes and surgical performance are not significantly different from those of microscopy-based microsurgery. Our findings indicate that short-term use of DVT is reliable for microsurgery and the long-term effect of using DVT deserve more consideration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stroke is a devastating condition that can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. The aftermath of a stroke, particularly hemorrhagic transformation (HT) and brain edema, can significantly impact the prognosis of patients. Early detection and effective management of these complications are crucial for improving outcomes in stroke patients. This review highlights the emerging diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets including claudin, occludin, zonula occluden, s100β, albumin, MMP-9, MMP-2, MMP-12, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, IFN-γ, TGF-β, IL-10, IL-4, IL-13, MCP-1/CCL2, CXCL2, CXCL8, CXCL12, CCL5, CX3CL1, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, P-selectin, E-selectin, PECAM-1/CD31, JAMs, HMGB1, vWF, VEGF, ROS, NAC, and AQP4. Peroxisomes are organelles enclosed by a single membrane and are present in various species. The abruption of peroxisomes is correlated with peroxisome biogenesis disorders and single peroxisomal enzyme deficiencies that induce diverse diseases in different organs. However, little is known about the protein compositions and corresponding roles of heterogeneous peroxisomes in various organs. Through transcriptomic and proteomic analyses, we observed heterogenous peroxisomal components among different organs, as well as between testicular somatic cells and different developmental stages of germ cells. As Pex3 is expressed in both germ cells and Sertoli cells, we generated Pex3 germ cell- and Sertoli cell-specific knockout mice. While Pex3 deletion in Sertoli cells did not affect spermatogenesis, the deletion in germ cells resulted in male sterility, manifested as the destruction of intercellular bridges between spermatids and the formation of multinucleated giant cells. Proteomic analysis of the Pex3-deleted spermatids revealed defective expressions of peroxisomal proteins and spermiogenesis-related proteins. These findings provide new insights that PEX3-dependent peroxisomes are essential for germ cells undergoing spermiogenesis, but not for Sertoli cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to explore the current status of teachers' multicultural education literacy and multicultural curriculum practices, with a total of 274 elementary school science teachers from Taitung County as survey participants. The questionnaire used a Likert-type four-point scale which content included the teachers' perception of multicultural education literacy and their multicultural education curriculum practices. The primary findings were as follows: (1) Teachers' perception of multicultural education literacy reflected a highly positive and affirming attitude. (2) Teachers from various backgrounds did not demonstrate significant differences in their perception related to multicultural education literacy. (3) Teachers who graduated from junior teacher colleges, normal universities, or teacher colleges and those who teach natural sciences were more likely to place importance on multicultural concepts and practices in their curriculum. (4) Although teachers had a high level of perception related to multicultural education, there was still a gap in their ability to actually carry out multicultural teaching.

This study investigated the relationship among adult affective factors, engagement in science, and scientific competencies. Probability proportional to size sampling was used to select 504 participants between the ages of 18 and 70 years. Data were collected through individual face-to-face interviews. The results of hierarchical regression analysis showed that while controlling demographic variable factors, science-related affective factors held explanatory power for scientific competencies. Among those factors, the explanatory power of self-efficacy was the greatest, followed by enjoyment and interest in science. While controlling antecedent factors, engagement in science held explanatory power for scientific competencies. It is suggested that improving affective factors and engagement in science may enhance adult scientific competencies. In terms of adult education, this study suggests that with more accessible science resources, adults may have the potential to trigger their interest, increase their self-confidence, and engage themselves in scientific issues.

This study aimed to develop a new scale to examine primary and secondary school students' perceptions of the severity of cyberbullying behaviours, and to explore further whether differences exist in the means of gender, grade and participant role. A total of 707 primary and secondary school students (M = 14.7) in Taiwan participated in this study. Two Olweus-like global items were used to identify students' participant roles. A self-reported cyberbullying severity scale (CSS) was developed and validated by Rasch measurement. Results of this study supported the reliability and validity of the 16-item CSS. Impersonation was rated as the most serious type of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying behaviours that occurred in private were rated as less severe than were those that occurred in public. A Rasch latent regression analysis revealed that some gender and involvement effects were found, but no statistically significant difference was found among means of four participant roles. The behavioural hierarchy of cyberbullying severity, mean differences among personal attributions and cyberbullying intervention are discussed at the end of the article.
