The present study aimed to determine the association between levels of the gender hormones, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone (P) and prolactin (PRL), and two breast cancer molecular markers, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her-2) and Ki67, in post-menopausal patients with breast cancer. A retrospective study of the serum hormone levels of FSH, LH, P and PRL and the expression status of Her-2 and Ki67 was performed using 187 post-menopausal females with breast cancer. Her-2+ breast cancer patients exhibited higher serum FSH levels compared with Her-2− patients (69.47±3.219 vs. 58.56±1.516 IU/l). The patients with high Ki67 expression [immunohistochemistry (IHC), 3+] displayed higher FSH (72.51±4.616 vs. 60.53±1.476 IU/l) and LH (32.33±1.916 vs. 26.98±0.8852 IU/l) levels than those with lower Ki67 expression. No correlation was identified between the FSH, LH, P and PRL hormone levels, tumor stages and lymphovascular invasion (LVI). In conclusion, a higher serum FSH level was identified in Her-2+ post-menopausal patients with breast cancer. Higher serum FSH and LH levels were also observed in breast cancer patients with high Ki67 expression. FSH and LH may function in the progression of breast cancer.

This study examines the factors that determine the adoption of stock option plans by Chinese listed firms. The results show that adoption of executive stock option plans is positively related to return on assets, market-to-book ratio, and chief executive officer duality structures, but negatively related to debt ratio and state ownership. In addition, the adoption of a stock option plan results in significantly positive cumulative abnormal returns during the three-day period following the adoption announcement date.

The authors analyze the impact of equity-based compensation on managerial risk-taking behavior in Chinese listed firms from January 2006 to July 2011. They find that greater risk-taking incentives lead executives to invest more in research and development (R&D) projects and less in capital expenditures. Greater managerial risk-taking incentive increases firm focus. Managerial risk-taking incentives have positive effects on firms' leverage. Overall, increasing the sensitivity of chief executive officers' portfolio value to stock return volatility helps incentivize executives to work harder, as sharing gains and losses with shareholders aligns the interests of executives and shareholders. In addition, the results indicate that state control of firms has a negative effect on R&D investment, and this suggests that state-controlled firms should take more initiative to innovate.

Cronobacter spp., formerly Enterobacter sakazakii, are human pathogens. They are the etiological agent of life-threating bacterial infections in infants. In this study, the survival behavior of C. sakazakii Bioresources Collection and Research Center (BCRC) 13988 in the presence of various ethanol concentrations was first examined. Besides, the test organism was subjected to treatment with 5% ethanol for 60 min (ethanol shock). The effect of ethanol shock on the resistance of C. sakazakii to lethal stresses, including high ethanol concentration (15%), low temperature (4°C and -20°C), high temperature (51°C) and high acidity (pH 3.3), was investigated. Results revealed that 4-5% ethanol is the maximum concentration that will allow C. sakazakii BCRC 13988 to grow in trypticase soy broth (TSB). Etthanol at 6% and 7% or more, respectively, exerted bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects, respectively, on the test organism. Although ethanol shock did not affect the resistance of C. sakazakii to a refrigerated temperature (4°C), the ethanol-shocked C. sakazakii survived better under other lethal stress conditions. After 50 min of exposure to 15% ethanol, the ethanol-shocked C. sakazakii showed a survival percentage of 16.11%, which was a 6400-fold increase over the control cells (

Recent research on moment-to-moment language comprehension has revealed striking differences between adults and preschool children. Adults rapidly use the referential principle to resolve syntactic ambiguity, assuming that modification is more likely when there are 2 possible referents for a definite noun phrase. Young children do not. We examine the scope of this phenomenon by exploring whether children use the referential principle to resolve another form of ambiguity. Scalar adjectives (big, small) are typically used to refer to an object when contrasting members of the same category are present in the scene (big and small coins). In the present experiment, 5-year-olds and adults heard instructions like "Point to the big (small) coin" while their eye-movements were measured to displays containing 1 or 2 coins. Both groups rapidly recruited the meaning of the adjective to distinguish between referents of different sizes. Critically, like adults, children were quicker to look to the correct item in trials containing 2 possible referents compared with 1. Nevertheless, children's sensitivity to the referential principle was substantially delayed compared to adults', suggesting possible differences in the recruitment of this top- down cue. The implications of current and previous findings are discussed with respect to the development of the architecture of language comprehension.

Over the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in technology assisted multimedia learning. The purpose of this study was to develop an online multimedia learning system, TEDQuiz, for English language learners to practice their listening skills. The system is comprised of an easy-to-use browser extension and a personalized online learning management platform. This can help learners to manage listening materials by automatically generating multiple -- choice questions, synchronously connecting to friends in a social network website and personally managing their learning progress and word bank. The use of the system involves six steps: skimming, asking questions, listening, answering questions, linking and reviewing. Taking TED talks as an example, users can skim the website, have guiding questions, listen to talks, answer the questions, link to a social network website, and review their profile on the TEDQuiz website. The experimental results demonstrate that students with the TEDQuiz system spent more time on video watching. In the questionnaire, students had a positive view of the functions of the TEDQuiz system. They thought it is useful and helpful, and they were willing to use it in the future. We also found that the usefulness factor was statistically significant in predicting the future usage of TEDQuiz.

Differences in caregiver input across socioeconomic status (SES) predict syntactic development, but the mechanisms are not well understood. Input effects may reflect the exposure needed to acquire syntactic representations during learning (e.g., does the child have the relevant structures for passive sentences?) or access this knowledge during communication (e.g., can she use the past participle to infer the meaning of passives?). Using an eye-tracking and act-out paradigm, the current study distinguishes these mechanisms by comparing the interpretation of actives and passives in 3- to 7-year-olds (n=129) from varying SES backgrounds. During the presentation of spoken sentences, fixations revealed robust disambiguation of constructions by children from higher-SES backgrounds, but less sensitivity by lower-SES counterparts. After sentence presentation, decreased sensitivity generated interpretive challenges and average SES-related differences for passives requiring syntactic revision ("The seal is quickly eaten by it"). Critically, no differences were found when revision was not needed ("It is quickly eaten by the seal"). These results suggest that all children shared an ability to acquire passives, but SES-related differences in real-time processing can impact the accuracy of utterance interpretation.

Purpose To study the prognostic value of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in patients with advanced cervical cancer treated with radiation therapy (RT) alone or concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT). Methods and Materials Between August 1993 and May 2000, 327 patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage III/IVA or stage IIB with positive lymph nodes) were eligible for this study. HPV genotypes were determined using the Easychip® HPV genechip. Outcomes were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the Cox proportional hazards model. Results We detected 22 HPV genotypes in 323 (98.8%) patients. The leading 4 types were HPV16, 58, 18, and 33. The 5-year overall and disease-specific survival estimates for the entire cohort were 41.9% and 51.4%, respectively. CCRT improved the 5-year disease-specific survival by an absolute 9.8%, but this was not statistically significant ( P =.089). There was a significant improvement in disease-specific survival in the CCRT group for HPV18-positive (60.9% vs 30.4%, P =.019) and HPV58-positive (69.3% vs 48.9%, P =.026) patients compared with the RT alone group. In contrast, the differences in survival with CCRT compared with RT alone in the HPV16-positive and HPV-33 positive subgroups were not statistically significant ( P =.86 and P =.53, respectively). An improved disease-specific survival was observed for CCRT treated patients infected with both HPV16 and HPV18, but these differenced also were not statistically significant. Conclusions The HPV genotype may be a useful predictive factor for the effect of CCRT in patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. Verifying these results in prospective trials could have an impact on tailoring future treatment based on HPV genotype.

The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of using a multiple partial volumetric-modulated arcs therapy (MP-VMAT) technique on the left breast irradiation and to evaluate the dosimetry and treatment efficiency. Ten patients with left-sided breast cancer who had been treated by whole breast irradiation were selected for the treatment plan evaluation by using six partial volumetric modulated arcs. Each arc consisted of a 50° gantry rotation. The planning target volumes and the normal organs, including the right breast, the bilateral lungs, left ventricle, heart, and unspecified tissue, were contoured on the CT images. Dose-volume histograms were generated and the delivery time for each arc was recorded. The PTV received greater than 95% of the V(95) for all cases, and the maximum dose was within ± 1% of 110% of the prescription dose. The mean homogeneity index (HI) was 10.61 ± 0.99, and mean conformity index (CI) was 1.21 ± 0.03. The mean dose, V(5), V(10), V(25), and V(30) of the heart were 7.61 ± 1.38 Gy, 59.73% ± 15.87%, 24.39%± 6.82%, 2.52%± 1.11%, and 1.57% ± 0.71%, respectively. The volume of the left ventricle receiving 25 Gy was 5.15% ± 2.23%. The total lung mean dose was 5.57 ± 0.36 Gy, with V(5) of 25.39% ± 3.88% and V(20) of 5.66% ± 0.89%. The right breast received a mean dose of 2.13 ± 0.22 Gy, with V(5) of 1.83% ± 1.22% and V(10) of 0.04% ± 0.12%. The mean dose of unspecified tissue was 5.34 ± 0.37 Gy and V(5) was 22.23% ± 1.57%. The volume of the unspecified tissue receiving 50 Gy was 0.50% ± 0.14%. The mean delivery time for each arc was 13.9 seconds. The average MU among ten patients was 511 MU (range 443 to 594 MUs). The MP-VMAT technique for the left-sided breast cancer patients achieved adequate target dose coverage while maintaining low doses to organs-at-risk, and therefore reduced the potential for induction of second malignancy and side effects. The highly efficient treatment delivery would be beneficial for improving patient throughput, providing patient comfort, and achieving precise treatment with the breathing control system.

Executive stock options (ESOs), serving as a compensation mechanism, are widely used in business administration. ESOs link managerial wealth to firm performance and shareholder wealth. The intrinsic value of ESOs is determined by the difference between the stock price and the strike price. Executives, as a result of self-interested incentives, would therefore manipulate firms’ reported earnings for influencing stock prices. Such conduct may boost the value of ESOs and then benefit managers greatly. This study attempts to explore if earnings had been manipulated before the ESO award date to satisfy some self-interested managers. In addition, the paper attempts to reveal the cause and effect relationship between executive incentives and earnings management when compensations are linked to stock prices. The empirical results show that there is a significant downward earnings management phenomenon before the ESO award date. Furthermore, quarterly earnings management occurs frequently around the ESO grant date.

The insertion of dental filling into the dental cavity is a common method of maintaining the space and shape of dental cavities after dental extractions. To develop novel dental fillings meeting clinical requirements, gellan gum (GG) is selected in this study to prepare fillings with specific characteristics by modulating gellan gum concentrations (denoted as GG-DF). The results indicate that the microstructure, porosity, and compression modulus of 1.5% and 1.75% GG-DF are similar to a commercially product (Teruplug ® ) and with good blood absorption capacity. The degradation ratio of Teruplug ® in an amylase/phosphate buffer solution after 4 weeks is 80% whereas that of 1.5% and 1.75% GG-DF is 65%. Cell migration studies confirmed that the migration ability of fibroblast was significantly inhibited by gellan gum. These results demonstrate that 1.5% and 1.75% GG-DF are potentially viable for developing into dental fillings.

The objective of this study was to explore whether hyperandrogenism induces epigenetic alterations of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma 1 (PPARG1), nuclear corepressor 1 (NCOR1), and histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) genes in granulosa cells (GCs) of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) women and whether these alterations are involved in the ovarian dysfunction induced by hyperandrogenism. Thirty-two infertile PCOS women and 147 infertile women with tubal blockage were recruited. PCOS women were divided into the hyperandrogenism (HA) PCOS group (n = 13) and nonhyperandrogenism (N-HA) PCOS group (n = 19). Sixty female Sprague-Dawley rats were used for PCOS model establishment. Patients with cervical cancer and supraclavicular lymph nodes (SLN) recurrence have a poor but heterogeneous prognosis. The aim of this study was to identify potential prognostic factors - including FDG-PET results - that may affect survival and treatment outcomes in patients with this group of patients.Between January 2001 and December 2008, we identified a total of 31 consecutive patients with cervical cancer who had evidence of SLN recurrence. All participants underwent FDG-PET. Survival was measured from the date of documented SLN recurrence. The latency period was defined as the length of time from the date of first diagnosis to the date of SLN recurrence.The median follow-up time was 22.8 months (range: 4.7-105.1). The 3- and 5-year survival rates were 41% and 27.3%, respectively. Patients with intermediate SUV values (between 4.3 and 8) had a significantly better prognosis than subjects with both high (8) or low (4.3) SUV values (p=0.004). Latency period2 years, SCC-Ag levels ≥ 4ng/mL, recurrence extend beyond SLN, and SUV of4.38 were significant adverse prognostic factors by multivariate analysis. The 3-year overall survival (OS) rate of patients carrying 0-1 adverse prognostic factors was 90% (low-risk group), while 3-year OS rates for intermediate-risk group (2 factors) and high-risk group (3-4 factors) were 30% and 0%, respectively (p=0.001).Our results justify the use of PET (accurate extent of relapse and SUV) as a prognostic tool in patients with cervical cancer and SLN recurrence.

Little evidence can be found about the long-term outcome of breast cancer patients after axillary lymph node recurrence (ALNR) and its survival benefit after different kinds of management. The present study intends to evaluate the risk factors associated with axillary recurrence after definite surgery for primary breast cancer. The prognosis after ALNR and particularly outcome of different management methods also were studied.We retrospectively reviewed data from 4,473 patients who were diagnosed with primary breast cancer and received surgical intervention in a single institute from January 1990 to December 2002. Medical files were reviewed and data on survival were updated annually. Risk factors and prognosis of patients with axillary recurrence were analyzed. Breast-cancer-specific survival of patients with ALNR and outcomes after different management methods also were studied.After a median follow-up of 70.2 months, axillary recurrence developed in 0.8% of patients. Factors associated with ALNR included: age younger than 40 years, medial tumor location, no initial standard level III axillary dissection, and not receiving hormonal therapy. The 5-year breast-cancer-specific survival after ALNR was 57.9%. For patients who received further axillary dissection, the 5-year survival rate was 82.5% compared with 44.9% for patients who did not receive further dissection.ALNR is a rare event in treating breast cancer. Young age at diagnosis and medially located tumor are associated with higher risk, but standardized initial axillary dissection to level II and adjuvant hormonal therapy is protective against ALNR. In patients with ALNR, the outcome is not dismal and survival may be improved if further axillary dissection is given.

The distinction between semantics (linguistically encoded meaning) and pragmatics (inferences about communicative intentions) can often be unclear and counterintuitive. For example, linguistic theories argue that the meaning of some encompasses the meaning of all while the intuition that some implies not all results from an inference. We explored how online interpretation of some evolves using an eye-tracking while listening paradigm. Early eye-movements indicated that while some was initially interpreted as compatible with all, participants began excluding referents compatible with all approximately 800 ms later. These results contrast with recent evidence of immediate inferencing and highlight the presence of bottom-up semantic–pragmatic interactions which necessarily rely on initial access to lexical meanings to trigger inferences.

Purpose To study the outcomes of patients with adenocarcinoma/adenosquamous carcinoma (AC/ASC) of the cervix primarily treated with radiotherapy (RT), identify the prognostic factors, and evaluate the efficacy of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) or salvage surgery. Methods and Materials A total of 148 patients with Stage I-IVA AC/ASC of cervix after full-course definitive RT were included. Of the 148 patients, 77% had advanced stage disease. Treatment failure was categorized as either distant or local failure. Local failure was further separated into persistent tumor or local relapse after complete remission. The effectiveness of CCRT with cisplatin and/or paclitaxel was examined, and the surgical salvage rate for local failure was reviewed. Results The 5-year relapse-free survival rate was 68%, 38%, 49%, 30%, and 0% for those with Stage IB/IIA nonbulky, IB/IIA bulky, IIB, III, and IVA disease, respectively, and appeared inferior to that of those with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix treated using the same RT protocol. Incomplete tumor regression after RT, a low hemoglobin level, and positive lymph node metastasis were independent poor prognostic factors for relapse-free survival. CCRT with weekly cisplatinum did not improve the outcome for our AC/ASC patients. Salvage surgery rescued 30% of patients with persistent disease. Conclusion Patients with AC/ASC of the cervix primarily treated with RT had inferior outcomes compared to those with squamous cell carcinoma. Incomplete tumor regression after RT was the most important prognostic factor for local failure. Salvage surgery for patients with persistent tumor should be encouraged for selected patients. Our results did not demonstrate a benefit of CCRT with cisplatin for this disease.

Objective To compare the effectiveness of diverse injections in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy using pairwise and network meta-analysis. Data Sources PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies published up to September 31, 2017. Study Selection We included all published or unpublished randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing diverse injections including corticosteroid, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, hyaluronic acid, botulinum toxin, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and prolotherapy in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. Among the 1495 records screened, 18 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Data Extraction The quality of RCTs was assessed with Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool by 2 independent raters. The primary outcome was pain reduction, and the secondary outcome was functional improvement. Data Synthesis Standardized mean difference (SMD) was used for pairwise and network meta-analysis. In pairwise meta-analysis, corticosteroid was more effective only in the short term in both pain reduction and functional improvement. Network meta-analysis indicated that prolotherapy significantly reduced pain compared with placebo in the long term (over 24wk; SMD: 2.63; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.88-3.38); meanwhile PRP significantly improved shoulder function compared with placebo in the long term (over 24wk; SMD: 0.44; 95% CI, 0.05-0.84). Conclusions For patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy, corticosteroid plays a role in the short term (3-6wk) but not in long-term (over 24wk) pain reduction and functional improvement. By contrast, PRP and prolotherapy may yield better outcomes in the long term (over 24wk). On account of heterogeneity, interpreting these results with caution is warranted.

Examining Taiwanese firms from 2002 to 2008, this paper investigates the motivations behind backdating the exercising of executive stock options. The probability of suspect exercises (backdating) is positively related to the firm’s stock return, the value of the option, tax savings, institutional ownership and the extent of CEO equity ownership and negatively related to firm-specific risk and the use of Big Four accounting firms. Tax incentives motivate executives to backdate the exercise date, implying that the greater the potential for larger tax savings, the greater the likelihood of backdating. Backdating usually occurs in firms that have heavy ownership by the CEO, have more claims to executive stock options and are not family-run, confirming the presence of the agency cost problem.

How does prior context influence lexical- and discourse-level processing during real-time language comprehension? Experiment 1 examined whether the referential ambiguity introduced by a repeated, anaphoric expression had an immediate or delayed effect on lexical and discourse processing, using an eye-tracking while reading task. Eye-movements indicated facilitated recognition of repeated expressions, suggesting that prior context can rapidly influence lexical processing. However, context effects at the discourse level affected later processing, appearing in longer regression-path durations two words after the anaphor and in greater re-reading times of the antecedent expression. Experiments 2 and 3 explored the nature of this delay by examining the role of the preceding context in activating relevant representations. Off-line and on-line interpretations confirmed that relevant referents were activated following the critical context. Nevertheless, their initial unavailability during comprehension suggests a robust temporal division between lexical- and discourse-level processing.

The fermented culture broth of Antrodia camphorata (A. camphorata) has been shown to promote cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of human estrogen-nonresponsive MDA-MB-231 cells. Herein, we demonstrate that non-cytotoxic concentrations (20-80 μg/mL) of A. camphorata markedly inhibited the invasion/migration of highly metastatic MDA-MB-231 cells as shown by an in vitro transwell and a wound-healing repair assay. The results of a gelatin zymography assay showed that A. camphorata suppressed the activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA). Western blot results demonstrated that treatment with A. camphorata decreased the expression of MMP-9, MMP-2, uPA, uPA receptor (uPAR) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); while the expression of the endogenous inhibitors of these proteins, i.e., tissue inhibitors of MMP (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2), and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1, increased. Further investigation revealed that A. camphorata suppressed the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, p38, and JNK1/2. A. camphorata treatment also led to a dose-dependent inhibition on NF-κB binding and activation. This is the first report confirming the anti-metastatic activity of this potentially beneficial mushroom against human breast cancer.

Whether a word has an irregular inflection does not depend on its sound alone: compare lie-lay (recline) and lie-lied (prevaricate). Theories of morphology, particularly connectionist and symbolic models, disagree on which nonphonological factors are responsible. We test four possibilities: (1) Lexical effects, in which two lemmas differ in whether they specify an irregular form; (2) Semantic effects, in which the semantic features of a word become associated with regular or irregular forms; (3) Morphological structure effects, in which a word with a headless structure (e.g., a verb derived from a noun) blocks access to a stored irregular form; (4) Compositionality effects, in which the stored combination of an irregular word's meaning (e.g., the verb's inherent aspect) with the meaning of the inflection (e.g., pastness) doesn't readily transfer to new senses with different combinations of such meanings. In four experiments, speakers were presented with existing and novel verbs and asked to rate their past-tense forms, semantic similarities, grammatical structure, and aspectual similarities. We found (1) an interaction between semantic and phonological similarity, coinciding with reported strategies of analogizing to known verbs and implicating lexical effects; (2) weak and inconsistent effects of semantic similarity; (3) robust effects of morphological structure, and (4) robust effects of aspectual compositionality. Results are consistent with theories of language that invoke lexical entries and morphological structure, and which differentiate the mode of storage of regular and irregular verbs. They also suggest how psycholinguistic processes have shaped vocabulary structure over history.

The current study synthesized amphiphilic thermal/pH-sensitive block copolymers PNiPAAm- b -PHpr by condensation polymerization of trans -4-hydroxy- l -proline (Hpr) initiated from hydroxy-terminated poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) as the macroinitiator in the presence of the catalyst, SnOct 2 . 1 H NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) characterized these copolymers. Their solutions showed reversible changes in optical properties: transparent below a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and opaque above the LCST. The LCST values depended on the polymer composition and the media. With critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the range of 1.23–3.73 mg L −1 , the block copolymers formed micelles in the aqueous phase owing to their amphiphilic characteristics. Increased hydrophobic segment length or decreased hydrophilic segment length in an amphiphilic diblock copolymer produced lower CMC values. The current work proved the core-shell structure of micelles by 1 H NMR analyses of the micelles in D 2 O. Transmission electron microscopy analyzed micelle morphology, showing a spherical core-shell structure. The micelles had an average size in the range of 170˜210 nm (blank), and 195˜280 nm (with drug). Observations showed high drug entrapment efficiency and drug-loading content for the drug micelles.

Recent work in adult psycholinguistics has demonstrated that activation of semantic representations begins long before phonological processing is complete. This incremental propagation of information across multiple levels of analysis is a hallmark of adult language processing but how does this ability develop? In two experiments, we elicit measures of incremental activation of semantic representations during word recognition in children. Five-year-olds were instructed to select a target (logs) while their eye-movements were measured to a competitor (key) that was semantically related to an absent phonological associate (lock). We found that, like adults, children made increased looks to competitors relative to unrelated control items. However, unlike adults, children continued to look at the competitor even after the target word was uniquely identified and were more likely to incorrectly select this item. Altogether, these results suggest that early lexical processing involves cascading activation but less efficient resolution of competing entries.

What is the relationship between children’s first number words and number concepts? We used training tasks to explore children’s interpretation of number words as they acquired the words’ meanings. Children who had mastered the meanings of only the first two or three number words were systematically provided with varied input on the next word-to-quantity mapping, and their extension of the newly trained word was assessed across a variety of test items. Children who had already mastered number words to three generalized training on four to new objects and nouns, such that their representation of the newly learned number was approximate. In contrast, children who had mastered only one and two learned to apply three reliably within a single count-noun context (e.g., three dogs), but did not generalize training to new objects labeled with different nouns (e.g., three cows). Both findings suggest that children fail to map newly learned words in their counting routine to the fully abstract concepts of natural numbers.

Tuning the hydrophilic–hydrophobic balance of amphiphilic block-graft PCL-b-(PαN3CL-g-PBA) copolymers by Click strategy.

The study proposes a straightforward strategy for synthesizing novel, amphiphilic triblock-graft PEG-(b-PαN3CL-g-Alkyne)2 degradable copolymers. First, this investigation performs copolymerization of α-chloro-e-caprolactone (αClCL) using α,ω-dihydroxyl-terminated macroinitiator poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and stannous octoate as the catalyst. In a second step, the current work converts pendent chlorides into azides by reacting with sodium azide. Finally, various kinds of terminal alkynes react with pendent azides by copper-catalyzed Huisgen’s 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, thus a “click” reaction. These copolymers are characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), 1H NMR, IR and gel permeation chromatography. The resulting triblock-graft copolymers exhibit lower crystallinity and melting temperature with respect to the original PEG. The triblock-graft copolymers form micelles in the aqueous phase with critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the range of 1.58–8.62 mg L−1, depending on polymer composition. The 1H NMR spectrum of micelles in D2O demonstrate only the PEG signal and thus confirm the PCL-g-Alkyne blocks constitute the micelle core, while the central PEG block constitutes the micelle shell. The hydrophilic segment lengths influence the micelle shape. The mean hydrodynamic diameters of micelles from DLS range from 90–200 nm. The synthesis of neoflavene and neoflavenes with methoxy substituents at different positions are described. As starting materials, various salicylaldehydes were run through sequential reactions such as O-allylation, Grignard reaction, oxidation, Wittig reaction, and ring-closing metathesis to yield the target neoflavenes in good yield. Among the prepared neoflavenes, 7-methoxy-4'-methoxyneoflavene (6e) and 8-methoxy-4'-methoxyneoflavene (6f) exhibiting potential cell toxicities against various cells were disclosed. In particular, 6f which exhibited an IC 50 value of 6.5 ± 2.0 and 5.1 ± 1.1 uM against gastric carcinoma and lung carcinoma cells in vitro was found, respectively. Meanwhile, the structure and activity relationship of our synthesized neoflavenes is further discussed briefly.

The block–graft copolymers formed micelles in the aqueous phase with critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the range of 1.4–12.0 mg L−1 depending on the composition of polymers. The lengths of hydrophilic segment influence the shape of the micelle. The mean hydrodynamic diameters of the micelles from dynamic light scattering were in the range of 90–160 nm. In vitro hydrolytic degradation of block–graft copolymers is faster than the corresponding block copolymers. A portable and cost-effective colorimetric diagnostic device was fabricated for rapid ABO and Rh blood typing. Using microfluidic construction on a thermoplastic chip, blood antibodies were preloaded into a reaction channel and exposed to blood samples to initiate a haemagglutination reaction. Downstream high-aspect ratio filters, composed of 2 μm high microslits, block agglutinated red blood cells (RBCs) to turn the reaction channel red, indicating the presence of the corresponding blood antigen. Users manually actuate the blood sample using a simple screw pump that drives the solution through serpentine reaction channels and chaotic micromixers for maximum interaction of the preloaded antibodies with the blood sample antigens. Mismatched RBCs and antibodies elute from the channel into an outlet reservoir based on the rheological properties of RBCs with no colorimetric change. As a result, unambiguous blood typing tests can be distinguished by the naked eye in as little as 1 min. Blood disorders, such as thalassemia, can also be distinguished using the device. The required blood volume for the test is just 1 μL, which can be obtained by the less invasive finger pricking method. The low reagent consumption, manual driving force, low-cost of parts, high yield, and robust fabrication process make this device sensitive, accurate, and simple enough to use without specialized training in resource constrained settings.

Background To construct safer recombinant flavivirus vaccine, we exploited Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) replicon-based platform to generate single-round infectious particles (SRIPs) that expressed heterologous neutralizing epitope SP70 derived from enterovirus-71 (EV71). Such pseudo-infectious virus particles, named SRIP-SP70, although are not genuine viable viruses, closely mimic live virus infection to elicit immune responses within one round of viral life cycle. Results We found that, besides gaining of full protection to thwart JEV lethal challenge, female outbred ICR mice, when were immunized with SRIP-SP70 by prime-boost protocol, could not only induce SP70-specific and IgG2a predominant antibodies but also provide their newborns certain degree of protection against EV71 lethal challenge. Conclusions Our results therefore exemplify that this vaccination strategy could indeed confer an immunized host a dual protective immunity against subsequent lethal challenge from JEV or EV71.

Small-cell cervical cancer (SCCC) is rare and prone to metastasize. We conducted a prospective study to evaluate the role of (18)F-FDG PET in the management of this aggressive malignancy.Patients with untreated primary, histologically confirmed SCCC were enrolled. (18)F-FDG PET (or PET/CT) was performed immediately after MRI or CT, for primary staging, monitoring response to treatment or restaging when there was suspicion of recurrence. The clinical impact of PET was determined on a scan basis.A total of 25 patients were recruited and 43 PET scans were performed. The PET images were obtained for primary staging (25 patients), monitoring response (10 patients) and restaging when there was suspicion of recurrence (8 patients). The median follow-up time in event-free patients was 109.3 months (range 97.5 - 157.7 months). A positive impact of PET was found in 8 (18.6 %) of the 43 scans, which included detection of additional regions of distal lymph node (LN) metastasis (one primary staging scan, two restaging scans), bone metastasis (two primary staging scans, one monitoring response scan), and exclusion of false-positive lesions on MRI (one primary staging scan, one restaging scan). On the other hand, one negative impact was recorded as one false-positive lesion on a restaging PET scan. One positive impact was noted for monitoring response (bone metastasis). The impact of three scans was indeterminate. The positive impact of down-staging in avoiding overtreatment but finding additional distal LN (except one on restaging) or bone metastases had no beneficial effect on long-term survival.The results of this preliminary study suggest that PET is useful in the management of SCCC. PET could have more value in detecting occult metastases if future novel therapies are able to offer better control of extensive SCCC.

Accumulating evidence suggests that aquaporins (AQPs) may facilitate tumor development. The molecular pathways connecting the pathological functions of AQPs are unclear and need to be better defined. This study aimed to investigate whether AQP3, one of the AQPs expressed highly in breast cancer, had any clinical implication in estrogen-receptor (ER) positive breast cancer and explore the regulatory mechanisms of AQP3 in estrogen-related breast cancer progression. Here we show that AQP3 is an important enforcer of migration and invasion in breast cancer. We, for the first time, reported that ER-positive breast cancer tissues obtained from premenopausal patients had higher AQP3 expression when compared to those obtained from postmenopausal patients. Estrogen directly upregulates AQP3 by activating ERE in the promoter of the AQP3 gene. The upregulation of AQP3 can influence the expression of molecules related to epithelial-mesenchymal transition and the reorganization of actin-cytoskeleton, resulting in enhancement of cell migration and invasion in ER-positive breast cancer cells.

Three experiments document that conceptual knowledge influences lexical acquisition in infancy. A novel target object was initially labeled with a novel word. In both yes-no (Experiment 1) and forced-choice (Experiment 2) tasks, 2-year-olds' subsequent extensions were mediated by the conceptual description of the targets. When targets were described as artifacts, infants extended on the basis of shape. When targets were described as animates, infants extended on the basis of both shape and texture. Experiment 3 revealed similar results for 1.5-year-olds. These results challenge the notion that expectations in word learning (e.g., the "shape bias") (a) emerge late and (b) rest entirely on correlations between perceptual object features and words. Instead, the results indicate that both perceptual and conceptual information permeate word learning in infancy.

Dispositional traits and life narratives represent two different levels of personality that have not previously been empirically linked. The current study tested five hypotheses connecting Big-Five traits to life-narrative indices of emotional tone, theme, and structure. Students (Study 1) and adults (Study 2) completed a self-report measure of the Big-Five traits and provided extended written accounts of either ten (students) or eight (adults) key life-narrative scenes, including life high points, low points, and turning points. Content analysis of the narrative data revealed that for both samples Neuroticism was positively associated with an emotionally negative life-narrative tone, Agreeableness was correlated with narrative themes of communion (e.g., friendship, caring for others), and Openness was strongly associated with the structural complexity of life narrative accounts. Contrary to prediction, however, Conscientiousness was not consistently associated with themes of agency (e.g., achievement, self-mastery) and Extraversion was unrelated to positive narrative tone. The results are discussed in the context of contemporary research and theorizing on the narrative study of lives and the relation of narrative research in personality to more conventional, trait-based approaches.

We present the complete genome sequence of Helicobacter pylori strain Hp238, isolated from a Taiwanese patient with gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Importantly, H. pylori strain Hp238 can multiply in THP-1 cells after internalization through the induction of autophagosome formation. These genome data will help to identify genes associated with H. pylori intracellular multiplication and pathogenesis.

e12503 Background: The pathologic complete response (pCR) rate in primary tumor and axillary node after different chemotherapy regimens of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in HER2 positive breast cancer (BC) is unknown, the impact of pCR on disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) is still controversial. Methods: A cohort of 350 HER2 positive BC (296 cytologically proved axillary node metastasis) received NAC with different regimens, antracyclin with taxotere (AT), docetaxel with transtuzumab (DT) and docetaxel with transtuzumab and pertuzumab( DTP) between 2005 and 2016 in a large medical center were analyzed retrospectively. The impact of pCR rates of breast and axillary node on DFS and OS were analyzed. Results: Of 350 women with HER2 positive BC received NAC, median age was 50 years(18~93), median tumor size was 4.3 cm, the pCR rates of breast and axillary node were 16.2% and 28.7% ( P= 0.018) in patients received AT( n= 130) , 47.6% and 66.9% ( P= 0.00028 ) in patients received DT( n= 191) ,65.5% and 77.8% ( P= 0.372 ) in patients received DTP( n= 29), respectively. The 5-year DFS were 79.3% and 66.0% ( p= 0.0023), 5-year OS were 89.5% and 76.6% ( P= 0.0201) in patients with breast pCR and non-pCR, respectively. The 5-year DFS were 75.7% and 58.4% ( P= 0.00037), 5-year OS were 85.7% and 72.6% ( P= 0.0024) in axillary pCR and non-pCR patients, respectively. The 5-year DFS were 79.3% and 75.7% ( P= 0.430), and 5-year OS were 89.5% and 85.7% ( P= 0.695) in breast and axillary pCR, respectively . The 5-year DFS in breast pCR whom received targeted therapy (DT and DTP groups) was significantly better than whom not received targeted therapy (AT groups), 85.3% and 65.0% ( P= 0.039), respectively Conclusions: Higher pCR rate in axillary node than breast was found in this cohort. Either pCR in axillary node or breast was associated with improved DFS and OS, but no difference of DFS and OS between breast and axillary pCR . The 5-year DFS in breast pCR received targeted therapy were significantly better than breast pCR patients received chemotherapy alone.

Empirical evidence for statistical learning comes from artificial language tasks, but it is unclear how these effects scale up outside of the lab. The current study turns to a real-world test case of statistical learning where native English speakers encounter the syntactic regularities of Arabic through memorization of the Qur'an. This unique input provides extended exposure to the complexity of a natural language, with minimal semantic cues. Memorizers were asked to distinguish unfamiliar nouns and verbs based on their co-occurrence with familiar pronouns in an Arabic language sample. Their performance was compared to that of classroom learners who had explicit knowledge of pronoun meanings and grammatical functions. Grammatical judgments were more accurate in memorizers compared to non-memorizers. No effects of classroom experience were found. These results demonstrate that real-world exposure to the statistical properties of a natural language facilitates the acquisition of grammatical categories.

Fungal spores are known as critical indoor allergens, and indoor air purification techniques including photocatalytic disinfection using titanium dioxide (TiO2), ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) and ozonation, have been considerably investigated. However, most of the research is in regard to photocatalytic disinfection, focused on the anti-bacterial efficacy of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). Furthermore, some research even showed that the photocatalytic antifungal efficacy of TiO2 NPs may not be that significant. Thus, investigating the reasons behind the non-significant antifungal efficacy of TiO2 photocatalytic disinfection and enhancing the antifungal efficacy is indispensable. In this study, ozone was employed to improve the photocatalytic antifungal efficacy of the TiO2 NPs and nano-metal supported on TiO2 NPs. The commercial TiO2 NPs (Degussa (Evonik) P25) served as a good support, and incipient wetness impregnation was successfully exploited to prepare oxidized nano-metals (Ag, Cu and Ni) in this study. There were two surfaces (quartz and putty) used in the inactivation experiments of Aspergillus niger spores which were manipulated under two conditions: exposed to ultraviolet (UVC) light , and exposed to UVC and ozone simultaneously. The SEM images demonstrated that the spores were sheltered from UVC light in the microcracks between TiO2 agglomerates. When irradiating with UVC, the A. niger spores on the two testing surfaces, without TiO2 NPs, were inactivated faster than those with TiO2 NPs, implying a "sun block" effect of this material and a lower photocatalytic antifungal efficacy than UVGI. On both surfaces, the inactivation rate constants (k) of A. niger spores exposed to UVC and ozone simultaneously (on quartz: k = 2.09-6.94 h(-1), on putty: k = 3.17-6.66 h(-1)) were better than those exposed to only UVC (on quartz: k = 1.80-5.89 h(-1); on putty: k = 2.97-3.98 h(-1)), indicating ozone can enhance the UVGI antifungal efficacy.

The study was to explore whether auricular acupressure (AA) can relieve anxiety during the period from trans-vaginal oocyte retrieval to the embryo transfer in IVF treatment and whether AA can improve the outcomes of IVF. 305 infertile patients with tubal blockage who were referred for IVF were included. The women were randomized into a control group with 102 cases, a Sham-AA group with 102 cases and an AA group with 101 cases. The anxiety levels were rated with Spielberger's State Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale. Data of clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), implantation rate (IR) and live birth rate (LBR) were obtained. The levels of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha) in the follicular fluids were detected with ELISA. After treatment, in AA group, the levels of state anxiety, preoperative anxiety and need-for-information were significantly lower, whereas CPR, IR, LBR and NPY levels in the follicular fluids were markedly higher than Sham-AA group and control group. We concluded that AA could help to reduce anxiety levels associated with IVF and improves the outcomes of IVF partly through increasing the levels of NPY in the follicular fluids.

Aristolochic acid-associated nephropathy (AAN) has been identified as a separate entity of progressive tubulo-interstitial nephropathy. Its characteristic pathologi- cal findings, including hypocellular interstitial fibrosis, intimal thickening of interlobular and afferent arterioles with glomeruli sparing or mild sclerosis, have been identified. Many cases of AAN in adults have been reported in Taiwan as well as throughout the world, but it has seldom been described in children. We report on a 10-year-old boy who presented with severe anemia, Fanconi' ss yndrome, and progressive renal failure. Renal biopsy revealed typical findings of AAN. Aristolochic acids I and II were identified from a Chinese herb mixture ingested by the boy. AAN was diagnosed after otheretiologies had been excluded. The case demonstrates the hazards of Chinese herbs with regard to children's health in Taiwan and suggests that more attention should be paid to this issue.

Two experiments examine the links between neural patterns in EEG (e.g., N400s, P600s) and their corresponding cognitive processes (e.g., lexical access, discourse integration) by varying the lexical and syntactic contexts of co-referential expressions. Experiment 1 examined coreferring expressions when they occurred within the same clause as their antecedents (John/Bill warmly dressed John). Experiment 2 examined between-clause co-referencing with expressions that also varied in lexical frequency (John/Weston went to the store so that John/Weston could buy milk). Evidence of facilitated lexical processing occurred after repeated names, which elicited smaller N400s, as compared with new names. N400s were also attenuated to a greater degree for low-frequency expressions than for high-frequency ones. Repeated names also triggered evidence of postlexical processing, but this emerged as larger P600s for within-clause co-referencing and delayed N400s for between-clause co-referencing. Together, these results suggest that linguistic processes can be distinguished through distinct ERP components or distinct temporal patterns.
