Biometric authentication involves various technologies to identify individuals by exploiting their unique, measurable physiological and behavioral characteristics. However, traditional biometric authentication systems (e.g., face recognition, iris, retina, voice, and fingerprint) are facing an increasing risk of being tricked by biometric tools such as anti-surveillance masks, contact lenses, vocoder, or fingerprint films. In this paper, we design a multimodal biometric authentication system named Deepkey, which uses both Electroencephalography (EEG) and gait signals to better protect against such risk. Deepkey consists of two key components: an Invalid ID Filter Model to block unauthorized subjects and an identification model based on attention-based Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to identify a subject`s EEG IDs and gait IDs in parallel. The subject can only be granted access while all the components produce consistent evidence to match the user`s proclaimed identity. We implement Deepkey with a live deployment in our university and conduct extensive empirical experiments to study its technical feasibility in practice. DeepKey achieves the False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and the False Rejection Rate (FRR) of 0 and 1.0%, respectively. The preliminary results demonstrate that Deepkey is feasible, show consistent superior performance compared to a set of methods, and has the potential to be applied to the authentication deployment in real world settings., Comment: 22 pages

Collaborative filtering (CF) has been successfully used to provide users with personalized products and services. However, dealing with the increasing sparseness of user-item matrix still remains a challenge. To tackle such issue, hybrid CF such as combining with content based filtering and leveraging side information of users and items has been extensively studied to enhance performance. However, most of these approaches depend on hand-crafted feature engineering, which are usually noise-prone and biased by different feature extraction and selection schemes. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid model by generalizing contractive auto-encoder paradigm into matrix factorization framework with good scalability and computational efficiency, which jointly model content information as representations of effectiveness and compactness, and leverage implicit user feedback to make accurate recommendations. Recommender systems have been actively and extensively studied over past decades. In the meanwhile, the boom of Big Data is driving fundamental changes in the development of recommender systems. In this paper, we propose a dynamic intention-aware recommender system to better facilitate users to find desirable products and services. Compare to prior work, our proposal possesses the following advantages: (1) it takes user intentions and demands into account through intention mining techniques. By unearthing user intentions from the historical user-item interactions, and various user digital traces harvested from social media and Internet of Things, it is capable of delivering more satisfactory recommendations by leveraging rich online and offline user data; (2) it embraces the benefits of embedding heterogeneous source information and shared representations of multiple domains to provide accurate and effective recommendations comprehensively; (3) it recommends products or services proactively and timely by capturing the dynamic influences, which can significantly reduce user involvements and efforts., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

Electroencephalography (EEG) signal based intent recognition has recently attracted much attention in both academia and industries, due to helping the elderly or motor-disabled people controlling smart devices to communicate with outer world. However, the utilization of EEG signals is challenged by low accuracy, arduous and time- consuming feature extraction. This paper proposes a 7-layer deep learning model to classify raw EEG signals with the aim of recognizing subjects' intents, to avoid the time consumed in pre-processing and feature extraction. The hyper-parameters are selected by an Orthogonal Array experiment method for efficiency. Our model is applied to an open EEG dataset provided by PhysioNet and achieves the accuracy of 0.9553 on the intent recognition. The Internet of Things (IoT), in general, is a compelling paradigm that aims to connect everyday objects to the Internet. Nowadays, IoT is considered as one of the main technologies which contribute towards reshaping our daily lives in the next decade. IoT unlocks many exciting new opportunities in a variety of applications in research and industry domains. However, many have complained about the absence of the real-world IoT data. Unsurprisingly, a common question that arises regularly nowadays is "Does the IoT already exist?". So far, little has been known about the real-world situation on IoT, its attributes, the presentation of data and user interests. To answer this question, in this work, we conduct an in-depth analytical investigation on real IoT data. More specifically, we identify IoT data sources over the Web and develop a crawler engine to collect large-scale real-world IoT data for the first time. We make the results of our work available to the public in order to assist the community in the future research. In particular, we collect the data of nearly two million Internet connected objects and study trends in IoT using a real-world query set from an IoT search engine. Based on the collected data and our analysis, we identify the typical characteristics of IoT data. The most intriguing finding of our study is that IoT data is mainly disseminated using Web Mapping while the emerging IoT solutions such as the Web of Things, are currently not well adopted. On top of our findings, we further discuss future challenges and open research problems in the IoT area.

Manifold structure learning is often used to exploit geometric information among data in semi-supervised feature learning algorithms. In this paper, we find that local discriminative information is also of importance for semi-supervised feature learning. We propose a method that utilizes both the manifold structure of data and local discriminant information. Specifically, we define a local clique for each data point. The k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN) is used to determine the structural information within each clique. We then employ a variant of Fisher criterion model to each clique for local discriminant evaluation and sum all cliques as global integration into the framework. In this way, local discriminant information is embedded. Labels are also utilized to minimize distances between data from the same class. In addition, we use the kernel method to extend our proposed model and facilitate feature learning in a high-dimensional space after feature mapping. With recent advances in radio-frequency identification (RFID), wireless sensor networks, and Web services, physical things are becoming an integral part of the emerging ubiquitous Web. Finding correlations of ubiquitous things is a crucial prerequisite for many important applications such as things search, discovery, classification, recommendation, and composition. This article presents DisCor-T, a novel graph-based method for discovering underlying connections of things via mining the rich content embodied in human-thing interactions in terms of user, temporal and spatial information. We model these various information using two graphs, namely spatio-temporal graph and social graph. Then, random walk with restart (RWR) is applied to find proximities among things, and a relational graph of things (RGT) indicating implicit correlations of things is learned. The correlation analysis lays a solid foundation contributing to improved effectiveness in things management. To demonstrate the utility, we develop a flexible feature-based classification framework on top of RGT and perform a systematic case study. Our evaluation exhibits the strength and feasibility of the proposed approach.

The emerging Internet of Things (IoT) will comprise billions of Web-enabled objects (or "things") where such objects can sense, communicate, compute and potentially actuate. WoT is essentially the embodiment of the evolution from systems linking digital documents to systems relating digital information to real-world physical items. It is widely understood that significant technical challenges exist in developing applications in the WoT environment. In this paper, we report our practical experience in the design and development of a smart home system in a WoT environment. Our system provides a layered framework for managing and sharing the information produced by physical things as well as the residents. We particularly focus on a research prototype named WITS, that helps the elderly live independently and safely in their own homes, with minimal support from the decreasing number of individuals in the working-age population. WITS enables an unobtrusive monitoring of elderly people in a real-world, inhabituated home environment, by leveraging WoT technologies in building context-aware, personalized services.

Unsupervised feature selection has been always attracting research attention in the communities of machine learning and data mining for decades. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised feature selection method seeking a feature coefficient matrix to select the most distinctive features. Specifically, our proposed algorithm integrates the Maximum Margin Criterion with a sparsity-based model into a joint framework, where the class margin and feature correlation are taken into account at the same time. To maximize the total data separability while preserving minimized within-class scatter simultaneously, we propose to embed Kmeans into the framework generating pseudo class label information in a scenario of unsupervised feature selection. Meanwhile, a sparsity-based model, ` 2 ,p-norm, is imposed to the regularization term to effectively discover the sparse structures of the feature coefficient matrix. In this way, noisy and irrelevant features are removed by ruling out those features whose corresponding coefficients are zeros. To alleviate the local optimum problem that is caused by random initializations of K-means, a convergence guaranteed algorithm with an updating strategy for the clustering indicator matrix, is proposed to iteractively chase the optimal solution. Performance evaluation is extensively conducted over six benchmark data sets.
