201. Douglas--Rachford algorithm for control-constrained minimum-energy control problems

Abstract

Splitting and projection-type algorithms have been applied to many optimization problems due to their simplicity and efficiency, but the application of these algorithms to optimal control is less common. In this paper we utilize the Douglas--Rachford (DR) algorithm to solve control-constrained minimum-energy optimal control problems. Instead of the traditional approach where one discretizes the problem and solves it using large-scale finite-dimensional numerical optimization techniques we split the problem in two subproblems and use the DR algorithm to find an optimal point in the intersection of the solution sets of these two subproblems hence giving a solution to the original problem. We derive general expressions for the projections and propose a numerical approach. We obtain analytic closed-form expressions for the projectors of pure, under-, critically- and over-damped harmonic oscillators. We illustrate the working of our approach to solving not only these example problems but also a challenging machine tool manipulator problem. Through numerical case studies, we explore and propose desirable ranges of values of an algorithmic parameter which yield smaller number of iterations.

Abstract

We study the identification of a linear time-invariant dynamical system affected by large-and-sparse disturbances modeling adversarial attacks or faults. Under the assumption that the states are measurable, we develop necessary and sufficient conditions for the recovery of the system matrices by solving a constrained lasso-type optimization problem. In addition, we provide an upper bound on the estimation error whenever the disturbance sequence is a combination of small noise values and large adversarial values. Our results depend on the null space property that has been widely used in the lasso literature, and we investigate under what conditions this property holds for linear time-invariant dynamical systems. Lastly, we further study the conditions for a specific probabilistic model and support the results with numerical experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

It combines the EF topical group reports of EF08 (Model-specific explorations), EF09 (More general explorations), and EF10 (Dark Matter at Colliders). Abstract

In this paper we study the radial epiderivative notion for nonconvex functions, which extends the (classical) directional derivative concept. The paper presents new definition and new properties for this notion and establishes relationships between the radial epiderivative, the Clarke's directional derivative, the Rockafellar's subderivative and the directional derivative. The radial epiderivative notion is used to establish new regularity conditions without convexity conditions. The paper analyzes necessary and sufficient conditions for global optimums in nonconvex optimization via the generalized derivatives studied in this paper. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a descent direction for radially epidifferentiable nonconvex functions. The paper presents explicit formulations for computing the weak subgradients in terms of the radial epiderivatives and vice versa, which are very important from point of view of developing solution methods for finding global optimums in nonsmooth and nonconvex optimization. All the properties and theorems presented in this paper, are illustrated and interpreted on examples.

Abstract

Mixed integer linear programming (MILP) is known as a type of programming that can combine continuous variables, integer variables, and (0-1) variables in the same algorithm and generate fitting results for the data. Using this technique, it is possible to model and solve complex problems in many different fields such as economics, biology, engineering, etc. In the present study, a regional planning model was developed using MILP technique for the conversion of manure from dairy and beef cattle into biogas and electrical energy. For this regional planning study, considering the locations of future facilities, data on dairy and beef cattle in the Isparta province of Türkiye were used. According to the model written and solution outputs, to utilize all manure obtained from dairy and beef cattles in Isparta, 5 biogas plants with a total manure processing capacity of approximately 522,000 tons should be built in different districts. It is possible to produce a total of approximately 21,000,000 m3 of biogas and 38,500 MW of electricity per year in these biogas plants. This electrical energy obtained can meet 3.83% of the annual electricity consumption of Isparta province.

Abstract

Climate change is altering flood risk globally, with local variations prompting the necessity for regional assessments to guide the planning and management of water-related infrastructures. This study details an integrated framework for assessing future changes in flood frequencies, using the case of Bitlis Creek (Turkey). The precipitation and temperature simulations of 21 global circulation models (GCMs) from the coupled model intercomparison project phase 6 (CMIP6) are used to drive the developed soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model in generating daily streamflow projections under the CMIP6 historical experiment and the shared socio-economic pathway (SSP) scenarios of SSP245 and SSP585. Five probability distribution functions are considered to calculate the 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-, and 500-year flood discharges for the historical period 1955–2010 and the future periods 2025–2074 and 2025–2099. The quantification of climate change impacts on the design discharges is based on the medians of the flood discharges obtained for the climate data of each GCM, using the best-fitted distribution functions. The findings illustrate significant increases in discharge rates, ranging from 21.1 to 31.7% for the 2025–2099 period under the SSP585 scenario, highlighting the necessity of considering changing climate conditions in designing water-related infrastructures. HIGHLIGHTS A framework is proposed for assessing possible changes in flood frequencies under the climate projections of CMIP6 GCMs using the SWAT model.; The quantification relies on the medians of flood discharges obtained from the climate projections of each GCM.; The methodology applied to Bitlis Creek indicates that the changing climate may lead to notable increases in flood discharges, emphasizing the need for adaptive measures.;

Abstract

Abstract The production yields of the Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530)0 resonances are measured in pp collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV with ALICE. The measurements are performed as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity ⟨dN ch /dη⟩, which is related to the energy density produced in the collision. The results include transverse momentum (p T) distributions, p T-integrated yields, mean transverse momenta of Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530)0, as well as ratios of the p T-integrated resonance yields relative to yields of other hadron species. The Σ(1385) ± /π ± and Ξ(1530)0 /π ± yield ratios are consistent with the trend of the enhancement of strangeness production from low to high multiplicity pp collisions, which was previously observed for strange and multi-strange baryons. The yield ratio between the measured resonances and the long-lived baryons with the same strangeness content exhibits a hint of a mild increasing trend at low multiplicity, despite too large uncertainties to exclude the flat behaviour. The results are compared with predictions from models such as EPOS-LHC and PYTHIA 8 with Rope shoving. The latter provides the best description of the multiplicity dependence of the Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530)0 production in pp collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV.

Abstract

Abstract Background We previously described the KINSSHIP syndrome, an autosomal dominant disorder associated with intellectual disability (ID), mesomelic dysplasia and horseshoe kidney, caused by de novo variants in the degron of AFF3. Mouse knock-ins and overexpression in zebrafish provided evidence for a dominant-negative mode of action, wherein an increased level of AFF3 resulted in pathological effects. Methods Evolutionary constraints suggest that other modes-of-inheritance could be at play. We challenged this hypothesis by screening ID cohorts for individuals with predicted-to-be damaging variants in AFF3. We used both animal and cellular models to assess the deleteriousness of the identified variants. Results We identified an individual with a KINSSHIP-like phenotype carrying a de novo partial duplication of AFF3 further strengthening the hypothesis that an increased level of AFF3 is pathological. We also detected seventeen individuals displaying a milder syndrome with either heterozygous Loss-of-Function (LoF) or biallelic missense variants in AFF3. Consistent with semi-dominance, we discovered three patients with homozygous LoF and one compound heterozygote for a LoF and a missense variant, who presented more severe phenotypes than their heterozygous parents. Matching zebrafish knockdowns exhibit neurological defects that could be rescued by expressing human AFF3 mRNA, confirming their association with the ablation of aff3. Conversely, some of the human AFF3 mRNAs carrying missense variants identified in affected individuals did not rescue these phenotypes. Overexpression of mutated AFF3 mRNAs in zebrafish embryos produced a significant increase of abnormal larvae compared to wild-type overexpression further demonstrating deleteriousness. To further assess the effect of AFF3 variation, we profiled the transcriptome of fibroblasts from affected individuals and engineered isogenic cells harboring + / + , KINSSHIP/KINSSHIP, LoF/ + , LoF/LoF or KINSSHIP/LoF AFF3 genotypes. The expression of more than a third of the AFF3 bound loci is modified in either the KINSSHIP/KINSSHIP or the LoF/LoF lines. While the same pathways are affected, only about one third of the differentially expressed genes are common to the homozygote datasets, indicating that AFF3 LoF and KINSSHIP variants largely modulate transcriptomes differently, e.g. the DNA repair pathway displayed opposite modulation. Conclusions Our results and the high pleiotropy shown by variation at this locus suggest that minute changes in AFF3 function are deleterious.

As per the 2020 statistics, this cancer ranks 6th in the list of most common cancers worldwide and is the third primary source of cancer-related deaths. Asia holds the record for the highest occurrence of HCC. HCC is found three times more frequently in men than in women. The primary risk factors for HCC include chronic viral infections, excessive alcohol intake, steatotic liver disease conditions, as well as genetic and family predispositions. Roughly 40– 50% of patients are identified in the late stages of the disease. Recently, there have been significant advancements in the treatment methods for advanced HCC. The selection of treatment for HCC hinges on the stage of the disease and the patient’s medical status. Factors such as pre-existing liver conditions, etiology, portal hypertension, and portal vein thrombosis need critical evaluation, monitoring, and appropriate treatment. Depending on the patient and the characteristics of the disease, liver resection, ablation, or transplantation may be deemed potentially curative. For inoperable lesions, arterially directed therapy might be an option, or systemic treatment might be deemed more suitable. In specific cases, the recommendation might extend to external beam radiation therapy. For all individuals, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach should be adopted when considering HCC treatment options. The main treatment strategies for advanced HCC patients are typically combination treatments such as immunotherapy and anti-VEGFR inhibitor, or a combination of immunotherapy and immunotherapy where appropriate, as a first-line treatment. Furthermore, some TKIs and immune checkpoint inhibitors may be used as single agents in cases where patients are not fit for the combination therapies. Abstract

Abstract Results on the transverse spherocity dependence of light-flavor particle production (π, K, p, ϕ, K*0, K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ , Λ, Ξ) at midrapidity in high-multiplicity pp collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV were obtained with the ALICE apparatus. The transverse spherocity estimator S O p T = 1 $$ \left({S}_{\textrm{O}}^{p_{\textrm{T}}=1}\right) $$ categorizes events by their azimuthal topology. Utilizing narrow selections on S O p T = 1 $$ {S}_{\textrm{O}}^{p_{\textrm{T}}=1} $$ , it is possible to contrast particle production in collisions dominated by many soft initial interactions with that observed in collisions dominated by one or more hard scatterings. Results are reported for two multiplicity estimators covering different pseudorapidity regions. The S O p T = 1 $$ {S}_{\textrm{O}}^{p_{\textrm{T}}=1} $$ estimator is found to effectively constrain the hardness of the events when the midrapidity (|η| < 0.8) estimator is used. The production rates of strange particles are found to be slightly higher for soft isotropic topologies, and severely suppressed in hard jet-like topologies. These effects are more pronounced for hadrons with larger mass and strangeness content, and observed when the topological selection is done within a narrow multiplicity interval. This demonstrates that an important aspect of the universal scaling of strangeness enhancement with final-state multiplicity is that high-multiplicity collisions are dominated by soft, isotropic processes. On the contrary, strangeness production in events with jet-like processes is significantly reduced. The results presented in this article are compared with several QCD-inspired Monte Carlo event generators. Models that incorporate a two-component phenomenology, either through mechanisms accounting for string density, or thermal production, are able to describe the observed strangeness enhancement as a function of S O p T = 1 $$ {S}_{\textrm{O}}^{p_{\textrm{T}}=1} $$ .

Abstract

Abstract The ALICE Collaboration reports a search for jet quenching effects in high-multiplicity (HM) proton-proton collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV, using the semi-inclusive azimuthal-difference distribution ∆φ of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high-p T,trig) trigger hadron. Jet quenching may broaden the ∆φ distribution measured in HM events compared to that in minimum bias (MB) events. The measurement employs a p T,trig-differential observable for data-driven suppression of the contribution of multiple partonic interactions, which is the dominant background. While azimuthal broadening is indeed observed in HM compared to MB events, similar broadening for HM events is observed for simulations based on the PYTHIA 8 Monte Carlo generator, which does not incorporate jet quenching. Detailed analysis of these data and simulations show that the azimuthal broadening is due to bias of the HM selection towards events with multiple jets in the final state. The identification of this bias has implications for all jet quenching searches where selection is made on the event activity.

Abstract Measurements of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV and the corresponding nuclear modification factor R pPb ch jet $$ {R}_{\textrm{pPb}}^{\textrm{ch}\ \textrm{jet}} $$ are presented, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed in the central rapidity region |η jet| < 0.5 from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The p T-differential inclusive production cross section of charged-particle jets, as well as the corresponding cross section ratios, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the transverse momentum range 10 < p T , jet ch $$ {p}_{\textrm{T},\textrm{jet}}^{\textrm{ch}} $$ < 140 GeV/c and 10 < p T , jet ch $$ {p}_{\textrm{T},\textrm{jet}}^{\textrm{ch}} $$ < 160 GeV/c, respectively, together with the nuclear modification factor R pPb ch jet $$ {R}_{\textrm{pPb}}^{\textrm{ch}\ \textrm{jet}} $$ in the range 10 < p T , jet ch $$ {p}_{\textrm{T},\textrm{jet}}^{\textrm{ch}} $$ < 140 GeV/c. The analysis extends the p T range of the previously-reported charged-particle jet measurements by the ALICE Collaboration. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with one and independent of the jet resolution parameter with the improved precision of this study, indicating that the possible influence of cold nuclear matter effects on the production cross section of charged-particle jets in p-Pb collisions at s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV is smaller than the current precision. The obtained results are in agreement with other minimum bias jet measurements available for RHIC and LHC energies, and are well reproduced by the NLO perturbative QCD Powheg calculations with parton shower provided by Pythia8 as well as by Jetscape simulations.

Abstract

Abstract While some clinics have adopted abbreviated neoadjuvant treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer, there remains a shortage of comprehensive clinical data to support this practice. This is a retrospective, multicenter study. A total of 142 patients were included in the study who are HER2-positive breast cancer, aged ≤ 65 years, with left ventricular ejection fraction ≥ 50%, received neoadjuvant chemotherapy and underwent surgery at 10 different oncology centers in Türkiye between October 2016 and December 2022. The treatment arms were divided into 4–6 cycles of docetaxel/trastuzumab/pertuzumab for arm A, 4 cycles of adriamycin/cyclophosphamide followed by 4 cycles of taxane/TP for arm B. There were 50 patients (35.2%) in arm A and 92 patients (64.8%) in arm B. The median follow-up of all of the patients was 19.9 months (95% CI 17.5–22.3). The 3-year DFS rates for treatment arms A and B were 90.0% and 83.8%, respectively, and the survival outcomes between the groups were similar (p = 0.34). Furthermore, the pathologic complete response rates were similar in both treatment arms, at 50.0% and 51.1%, respectively (p = 0.90). This study supports shortened neoadjuvant treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer, a common practice in some clinics.

Abstract

Indoor air quality has become a more prominent concern since the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. Manufacturing industries have always been prone to occupational health risks, which depend on the dynamics of the production shop floors. The furniture industry is one of these sectors with a unique work environment. Although a typical furniture manufacturing facility involves physical, chemical, and noise pollution-producing elements, this industry has been studied relatively less for indoor air quality and noise-related risks. This study investigated nine furniture manufacturing organizations’ indoor air quality and noise pollution levels through comprehensive quantitative techniques. The results of the measurements were compared against reference values set by specific guidelines to explore the degree of occupational health risk associated with the World Health Organization's (WHO) suggested levels. Repetitive measurements from five pre-designated workstations were taken at each facility. The study’s results indicated that organization size and department were significant factors for PM 2.5 and HCHO parameters, while only department type was substantial for noise exposure levels. However, across all departments and organization sizes, LAeq noise levels were below the safety threshold of 85 dB(A). Most organizations presented a lack of proper use of personal protective equipment and poor ventilation across shop floors.

237. Blinatumomab as a Curative Therapy Option for Relapsed/Refractory Infant Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Post-Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation - Case Report

Abstract

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of cancer in children, with a particularly poor prognosis in infants under one year of age. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an effective therapy for relapsed or refractory ALL; however, relapse after HSCT remains a significant challenge. Many children cannot undergo HSCT because of serious adverse events from previous treatment. In this case report, we present the case of an infant with relapsed/refractory ALL who received blinatumomab as salvage therapy after a second haploidentical HSCT and remained in remission for 15 months without subsequent HSCT. The patient was a 4-month-old male diagnosed with high-risk infant B-cell ALL with KMT2A/AFF1. He received induction chemotherapy according to the INTERFANT-06 protocol and achieved complete remission. He underwent 10/10 matched-sibling bone marrow transplantation but experienced an isolated marrow relapse 2 months post-transplant and then received a second haploidentical HSCT. He was treated with one cycle of blinatumomab after the relapse that occurred after the second HSCT. Due to toxicity, the patient did not receive a third transplant but was followed up after blinatumomab. And the patient remained in complete remission for 15 months after the blinatumomab therapy. Blinatumomab has been known as a bridging therapy. We suggest that blinatumomab could be a promising curative therapy option for patients who cannot receive further HSCT.

Abstract

Abstract Compared to classical techniques of morphological analysis, micro-CT (μ-CT) has become an effective approach allowing rapid screening of morphological changes. In the present work, we aimed to provide an optimized micro-CT dense agent perfusion protocol and μ-CT guidelines for different stages of chick embryo cardiogenesis. Our study was conducted over a period of 10 embryonic days (Hamburger-Hamilton HH36) in chick embryo hearts. During the perfusion of the micro-CT dense agent at different developmental stages (HH19, HH24, HH27, HH29, HH31, HH34, HH35, and HH36), we demonstrated that durations and volumes of the injected contrast agent gradually increased with the heart developmental stages contrary to the flow rate that was unchanged during the whole experiment. Analysis of the CT imaging confirmed the efficiency of the optimized parameters of the heart perfusion.

Abstract Tumor-associated microglia and blood-derived macrophages (TAMs) play a central role in modulating the immune suppressive microenvironment in glioma. Here, we show that GPNMB is predominantly expressed by TAMs in human glioblastoma multiforme and the murine RCAS-PDGFb high grade glioma model. Loss of GPNMB in the in vivo tumor microenvironment results in significantly smaller tumor volumes and generates a pro-inflammatory innate and adaptive immune cell microenvironment. The impact of host-derived GPNMB on tumor growth was confirmed in two distinct murine glioma cell lines in organotypic brain slices from GPNMB-KO and control mice. Using published data bases of human glioma, the elevated levels in TAMs could be confirmed and the GPNMB expression correlated with a poorer survival.

Abstract

Aim: Cisplatin (CIS), an antineoplastic agent, shows serious side effects such as hepatotoxicity. Thymoquinone (ThQ) is a powerful anti-oxidant with many beneficial effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-tumoral. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ThQ treatment has hepatoprotective effect in CIS-induced hepatotoxicity model in rats and also to determine how CIS and/or ThQ treatments affect OTULIN levels, one of the deubiquitinases, in liver tissue. Materials and Methods: The 28 rats used in the study control (application not done), CIS (7 mg/kg CIS, first day of experiment, intraperitoneal), CIS+ThQ (7 mg/kg CIS, first day of experiment, intraperitoneal + 10 mg/kg/day ThQ, oral gavage) and ThQ (10 mg/kg/day ThQ, oral gavage) were divided into four equal groups (n=7). The experiment was terminated upon completion of all applications (day 15). The effects of CIS and\or ThQ apps on liver tissues were examined biochemically, histopathologically and immunohistochemically. Results: CIS application increased liver enzyme levels, histopathological changes, inflammation, oxidative stress and apoptosis in liver tissue and caused a decrease in OTULIN level. However, ThQ administration showed a positive regulatory effect on CIS-induced changes in liver tissue.. Conclusion: ThQ supplementation has a hepatoprotective effect against CISinduced liver tissue damage.

Abstract

Abstract Long- and short-range correlations for pairs of charged particles are studied via two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV and p–Pb collisions at s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV. The correlation functions are measured as a function of relative azimuthal angle ∆φ and pseudorapidity separation ∆η for pairs of primary charged particles within the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 0.9 and the transverse-momentum interval 1 < p T < 4 GeV/c. Flow coefficients are extracted for the long-range correlations (1.6 < |∆η| < 1.8) in various high-multiplicity event classes using the low-multiplicity template fit method. The method is used to subtract the enhanced yield of away-side jet fragments in high-multiplicity events. These results show decreasing flow signals toward lower multiplicity events. Furthermore, the flow coefficients for events with hard probes, such as jets or leading particles, do not exhibit any significant changes compared to those obtained from high-multiplicity events without any specific event selection criteria. The results are compared with hydrodynamic-model calculations, and it is found that a better understanding of the initial conditions is necessary to describe the results, particularly for low-multiplicity events.

243. Adherence to medical treatment for Wilson’s disease in children and adolescents: a cohort study from Turkey

Abstract

Abstract Background This study aimed to assess medication adherence and demographic, clinical, and psychopathological parameters such as quality of life, depression, and anxiety levels that can affect pediatrics with Wilson’s Disease (WD). Methods A prospective cohort study was conducted at an outpatient clinic in Turkey among pediatric patients (2 to 18 years) with WD between November 2022 and April 2023. The Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS-5) as a subjective and Medication Possession Ratio (MPR) as an objective assessment were scored. Physical, genetic and biochemical parameters, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) for both parents and patients, Childhood Depression Inventory, State Trait Anxiety Inventory were also administered. Results A total of 30 pediatric outpatients who were prescribed D-penicillamine (n = 27) or trientine (n = 3) as chelators and zinc (n = 29) and pyridoxine (n = 19) as supplements were included. Proteinuria (n = 3), skin rash (n = 2), and gastrointestinal upset (n = 2) were observed. When the correlation between MARS-5 and duration of follow-up was examined, a significant negative correlation was found (p = 0.014). According to MPRs, non-adherence rates (missed doses ≥ 20%) were 29.6%, 17.2% and 5.3% for D-penicillamine, zinc and pyridoxine, respectively. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine Turkish primary teacher candidates' conceptual understandings of gases. In this study, a survey approach was used. The sample consisted of 240 primary teacher candidates. As the data collection tool, a questionnaire of six questions consisting of three open-ended and three multiple choice was used. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were provided using the opinions of three field experts and the reliability analysis for multiple-choice ones. The responses to the open-ended questions and the drawings were analyzed descriptively using the predetermined codes and then the categories were formed. The findings showed that primary teacher candidates had some common misunderstandings of gases and their level of understanding of gases is rather low. It is suggested that more attention should be given to developing a correct understanding of the fundamental science concepts in primary teacher training.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of teaching the socio-scientific issues, "Global Warming, Sustainable development and Bio-technology" in 8th class, with the case-oriented station technique on the academic achievement of the students and their motivation toward science learning. The study was carried out with 71 students in 8th class in 2 secondary schools of a district with approximately 20.000 population in the Eastern Anatolia Region. The mixed-method, consisting of the data collected as qualitatively and quantitatively, was employed. In the quantitative part of the study, the Socio-scientific issues Achievement Test and the Science Learning Motivation Scale developed by Dede and Yaman (2008) to measure students' motivation to learn were used. Unstructured interview, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was preferred in order to support the study with student opinions and comments. The Socio-scientific Issues Achievement Test and the Science Learning Motivation Scale were applied to the experimental and control groups as pre-test at the beginning and as post-test at the end of the study. Results indicated that teaching the socio-scientific issues with case-oriented station technique positively affected the students' academic achievements and their motivation toward science learning. Besides, the interviews showed that the students found it useful, fun, remarkable and permanent to learn socio-scientific issues using the case-oriented station technique.

247. Incorporating Rivalry in Reinforcement Learning for a Competitive Game

Abstract

Recent advances in reinforcement learning with social agents have allowed such models to achieve human-level performance on specific interaction tasks. However, most interactive scenarios do not have a version alone as an end goal; instead, the social impact of these agents when interacting with humans is as important and largely unexplored. In this regard, this work proposes a novel reinforcement learning mechanism based on the social impact of rivalry behavior. Our proposed model aggregates objective and social perception mechanisms to derive a rivalry score that is used to modulate the learning of artificial agents. To investigate our proposed model, we design an interactive game scenario, using the Chef's Hat Card Game, and examine how the rivalry modulation changes the agent's playing style, and how this impacts the experience of human players in the game. Our results show that humans can detect specific social characteristics when playing against rival agents when compared to common agents, which directly affects the performance of the human players in subsequent games. We conclude our work by discussing how the different social and objective features that compose the artificial rivalry score contribute to our results., Comment: Accepted at the Neural Computing and Applications Journal

Abstract

In this paper we are concerned with the asymptotic behavior of \[ \operatorname{tr}(\mathcal{L}^+_{\rm sq}) = \frac{1}{4} \sum_{j,k=0 \atop (j,k) \neq (0,0)}^{n-1} \frac{1}{1-\frac{1}{2} \big( \cos \frac{2\pi j}{n} + \cos \frac{2\pi k}{n} \big)}, \] the trace of the pseudoinverse of the Laplacian matrix related with the square lattice, as $n \to \infty$. The method we developed for such sums in former papers depends on the use of Taylor approximations for the summands. It was shown that the error term depends on whether the Taylor polynomial used is of degree two or higher. Abstract

Many fundamental low-rank optimization problems, such as matrix completion, phase synchronization/retrieval, power system state estimation, and robust PCA, can be formulated as the matrix sensing problem. Two main approaches for solving matrix sensing are based on semidefinite programming (SDP) and Burer-Monteiro (B-M) factorization. The SDP method suffers from high computational and space complexities, whereas the B-M method may return a spurious solution due to the non-convexity of the problem. The existing theoretical guarantees for the success of these methods have led to similar conservative conditions, which may wrongly imply that these methods have comparable performances. In this paper, we shed light on some major differences between these two methods. First, we present a class of structured matrix completion problems for which the B-M methods fail with an overwhelming probability, while the SDP method works correctly. Second, we identify a class of highly sparse matrix completion problems for which the B-M method works and the SDP method fails. Third, we prove that although the B-M method exhibits the same performance independent of the rank of the unknown solution, the success of the SDP method is correlated to the rank of the solution and improves as the rank increases. Unlike the existing literature that has mainly focused on those instances of matrix sensing for which both SDP and B-M work, this paper offers the first result on the unique merit of each method over the alternative approach., Comment: 21 pages

Abstract

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an attractive method to acquire vital signs such as heart rate and blood oxygenation and is frequently used in clinical and at-home settings. Continuous operation of health monitoring devices demands a low power sensor that does not restrict the device battery life. Silicon photodiodes (PD) and LEDs are commonly used as the interface devices in PPG sensors; however, using of flexible organic devices can enhance the sensor conformality and reduce the cost of fabrication. In most PPG sensors, most of system power consumption is concentrated in powering LEDs, traditionally consuming mWs. Using organic devices further increases this power demand since these devices exhibit larger parasitic capacitances and typically need higher drive voltages. This work presents a sensor IC for continuous SpO$_2$ and HR monitoring that features an on-chip reconstruction-free sparse sampling algorithm to reduce the overall system power consumption by $\sim$70\% while maintaining the accuracy of the output information. The designed frontend is compatible with a wide range of devices from silicon PDs to organic PDs with parasitic capacitances up to 10 nF. Implemented in a 40 nm HV CMOS process, the chip occupies 2.43 mm$^2$ and consumes 49.7 $\mu$W and 15.2 $\mu$W of power in continuous and sparse sampling modes respectively. The performance of the sensor IC has been verified \textit{in vivo} with both types of devices and the results are compared against a clinical grade reference.
