Multi-agent pathfinding (MAPF) is a challenging problem which is hard to solve optimally even when simplifying assumptions are adopted, e.g. planar graphs (typically -- grids), discretized time, uniform duration of move and wait actions etc. On the other hand, MAPF under such restrictive assumptions (also known as the Classical MAPF) is equivalent to the so-called pebble motion problem for which non-optimal polynomial time algorithms do exist. Recently, a body of works emerged that investigated MAPF beyond the basic setting and, in particular, considered agents of arbitrary size and shape. Still, to the best of our knowledge no complete algorithms for such MAPF variant exists. In this work we attempt to narrow this gap by considering MAPF for large agents and suggesting how this problem can be reduced to pebble motion on (general) graphs. The crux of this reduction is the procedure that moves away the agents away from the edge which is needed to perform a move action of the current agent. We consider different variants of how this procedure can be implemented and present a variant of the pebble motion algorithm which incorporates this procedure. Unfortunately, the algorithm is still incomplete, but empirically we show that it is able to solve much more MAPF instances (under the strict time limit) with large agents on arbitrary non-planar graphs (roadmaps) compared to the state-of-the-art MAPF solver -- Continous Conflict-Based Search (CCBS)., Comment: This is a preprint of the paper accepted to MICAI'22. Increasing the Fermilab Main Injector (MI) beam power above ~1.2 MW requires replacement of the 8 GeV Booster by a higher intensity alternative. Earlier, rapid-cycling synchrotron and linac solutions were considered for this purpose. In this paper, we consider the linac version that produces 8 GeV H- beam for injection into the Recycler Ring (RR) or MI The new linac takes ~1 GeV beam from the PIP-II linac and accelerates it to ~ 2 GeV in a 650 MHz SRF linac, and then accelerates to ~8 GeV in an SRF pulsed linac using 1300 MHz cryomodules. The linac components incorporate recent improvements in SRF technology. A trion magnetic polaron formed by the exchange interaction of a positively charged exciton (trion) with localized spins of Mn$^{2+}$ ions is found experimentally in a 4\,nm wide Cd$_{0.98}$Mn$_{0.02}$Te/Cd$_{0.78}$Mn$_{0.02}$Mg$_{0.2}$Te quantum well containing resident holes. The experiment is performed at a temperature of 1.6 K using resonant excitation of the trion with circularly polarized light. The trion is formed from a resident hole, which is in a hole magnetic polaron state, and a photogenerated electron-hole pair. The dynamical evolution from the hole magnetic polaron to the trion magnetic polaron is accompanied by a spin-flip of the electron, which results in negative circular polarization of the photoluminescence. The degree of circular polarization reaches $-8\%$ at zero magnetic field and strongly decreases in transverse magnetic fields exceeding 0.2 T. Our model considerations show that different localization sizes of the resident and photogenerated holes and the resulting difference in their exchange interaction with the Mn$^{2+}$ spins maintains Mn spin polarization. The resulting exchange field of Mn acting on the electron provides a robust spin polarization of the trion magnetic polaron. We evaluate the electron exchange energy in the T$^+$MP to be 0.19~meV, and the T$^+$MP binding energy to be about 0.5 - 1 meV.

In most superconductors electrons form Cooper pairs in a spin-singlet state mediated by either phonons or by long-range interactions such as spin fluctuations. The superconductor UTe$_2$ is a rare material wherein electrons are believed to form pairs in a unique spin-triplet state with potential topological properties. While spin-triplet pairing may be mediated by ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic fluctuations, experimentally, the magnetic properties of UTe$_2$ are unclear. By way of muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements on independently grown UTe$_2$ single crystals we demonstrate the existence of magnetic clusters that gradually freeze into a disordered spin frozen state at low temperatures. Our findings suggest that inhomogeneous freezing of magnetic clusters is linked to the ubiquitous residual linear term in the temperature dependence of the specific heat ($C$) and the low-temperature upturn in $C/T$ versus $T$. The omnipresent magnetic inhomogeneity has potential implications for experiments aimed at establishing the intrinsic low-temperature properties of UTe$_2$., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures

In this article, we illustrate how the Coulomb field of a highly relativistic electron beam can be shaped into a broadband pulse suitable for driving ultrafast and strong-field physics. In contrast to a solid-state laser, the Coulomb field creates a pulse which can be intrinsically synchronized with an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL), can have a cutoff frequency which is broadly tunable from THz to EUV, and which acts on target systems as a "half-cycle" impulse. Explicit examples are presented to emphasize how the unique features of this excitation can be a tool for novel science at XFEL facilities like the LCLS., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems center is developing searches for dark photons, axions and ALPs with the goal of improving upon the current state-of-the-art sensitivity. These efforts leverage on Fermi National Accelerator expertise on ultra-high quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities combined with the center research on quantum technology. Here we focus on multiple axion searches that utilize ~1E10 quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities and their resonant modes to enhance the production and/or detection of axions in the cavity volume. In addition, we present preliminary results of single-mode and multi-mode nonlinearity measurements that were carried out as part of an experimental feasibility study to gain insight on the behavior of the ultra-high quality factor resonators and the experimental RF system in the regime relevant for axion searches., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

Controlling wave-matter interactions with metamaterials (MTMs) for the calculation of mathematical operations has become an important paradigm for analogue computing given their ability to dramatically increase computational processing speeds. Here, motivated by the importance of performing mathematical operations on temporal signals, we propose, design and study multilayer MTMs with the ability to calculate the derivative of incident modulated temporal signals, as an example of a significant computing process for signal processing. To do this, we make use of a neural network (NN) based algorithm to design the multilayer structures (alternating layers of indium tin oxide (ITO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2)) that can calculate the first temporal derivative of the envelope of an impinging electromagnetic signal at telecom wavelengths (modulated wavelength of 1550 nm). Different designs are presented using multiple incident temporal signals including a modulated Gaussian as well as modulated arbitrary functions, demonstrating an excellent agreement between the predicted results (NN results) and the theoretical (ideal) values. It is shown how, for all the designs, the proposed NN-based algorithm can complete its search of design space for the layer thicknesses of the multilayer MTM after just a few seconds, with a low mean square error in the order of (or below) 10^-4 when comparing the predicted results with the theoretical spectrum of the ideal temporal derivative., Comment: 4 Figures, 17 pages

Frequency conversion between microwave and optical photons is a key enabling technology to create links between superconducting quantum processors and to realize distributed quantum networks. We propose a microwave-optical transduction platform based on long-coherence-time superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities coupled to electro-optic optical cavities to mitigate the loss mechanisms that limit the attainment of high conversion efficiency. In the design, we optimize the microwave-optical field overlap and optical coupling losses, while achieving long microwave and optical photon lifetime at milli-Kelvin temperatures. This represents a significant enhancement of the transduction efficiency up to 50% under pump power of 140$\mu$W, corresponding to few-photon quantum regime. Furthermore, this scheme exhibits high resolution for optically reading out the dispersive shift induced by a superconducting transmon qubit coupled to the SRF cavity. We also show that the fidelity of heralded entanglement generation between two remote quantum systems is enhanced by the low microwave losses. Finally, high-precision in quantum sensing can be reached below the standard quantum limit., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

The stabilization of ``rigid'' flute and ballooning modes $m = 1$ in an axisymmetric mirror trap with the help of an ideally conducting lateral both in the presence and in the absence of end MHD anchors is studied. The calculations were performed for an anisotropic plasma in a model that simulates the pressure distribution during the injection of beams of fast neutral atoms into the magnetic field minimum at a right angle to the trap axis. It was assumed that the lateral wall has the shape of a cylinder with a variable radius, so that on an enlarged scale it repeats the shape of the plasma column. It has been found that for the effective stabilization of the listed modes by an ideally conducting lateral wall, the parameter beta ($\beta$, the ratio of the plasma pressure to the magnetic field pressure) must exceed some critical value $\beta_{\text{crit}}$. When combined with a conducting lateral wall and conducting end plates imitating MHD end stabilizers, there are two critical beta values and two stability zones $0<\beta<\beta_{\text{ crit}1}$ and $\beta_{\text {crit}2}<\beta<1$ that can merge, making the entire range of allowable beta values $0<\beta<1$ stable. The dependence of the critical betas on the degree of plasma anisotropy, the mirror ratio, and the width of the vacuum gap between the plasma and the lateral wall is studied. In contrast to the works of other authors devoted to the plasma model with a sharp boundary, we calculated the boundaries of the stability zone for a number of diffuse radial pressure profiles and several axial magnetic field profiles., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

The spin physics of perovskite nanocrystals with confined electrons or holes is attracting increasing attention, both for fundamental studies and spintronic applications. Here, stable CsPb(Cl$_{0.5}$Br$_{0.5}$)$_3$ lead halide perovskite nanocrystals embedded in a fluorophosphate glass matrix are studied by time-resolved optical spectroscopy to unravel the coherent spin dynamics of holes and their interaction with nuclear spins of the $^{207}$Pb isotope. We demonstrate the spin mode locking effect provided by the synchronization of the Larmor precession of single hole spins in each nanocrystal in the ensemble that are excited periodically by a laser in an external magnetic field. The mode locking is enhanced by nuclei-induced frequency focusing. An ensemble spin dephasing time $T_2^*$ of a nanosecond and a single hole spin coherence time of $T_2=13\,$ns are measured. The developed theoretical model accounting for the mode locking and nuclear focusing for randomly oriented nanocrystals with perovskite band structure describes the experimental data very well., Comment: Main paper of 9 pages and 3 figures. We introduce POGEMA (https://github.com/AIRI-Institute/pogema) a sandbox for challenging partially observable multi-agent pathfinding (PO-MAPF) problems . This is a grid-based environment that was specifically designed to be a flexible, tunable and scalable benchmark. It can be tailored to a variety of PO-MAPF, which can serve as an excellent testing ground for planning and learning methods, and their combination, which will allow us to move towards filling the gap between AI planning and learning., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures
