Twelve normal research subjects were subjected to brachial arterial and venous catheter insertion and instrumentation of their forearm to estimate plethysmographic forearm blood flow and to examine the validity of the assumption that exercise-stimulated vasodilation of skeletal muscle arterioles is influenced by the endothelial release of prostaglandins. The focus was on the influence of forearm exercise on the local release of 6-ketoprostaglandin F-1 alpha (PGF-1 alpha), the stable metabolite of prostacyclin and prostaglandin E2(PGE2). The exercise-induced arteriolar vasodilation and hyperemia in skeletal muscle are influenced by the release of vasodilatory prostaglandins.
