Abstract

The characterisation of marine soundscapes allows observation of spatiotemporal distribution of vocalising species and human activities, which can inform an assessment of their interactions. Such data are important for monitoring the ecological status of marine habitats. The Scottish Atlantic Frontier is an important habitat for a variety of cetacean species. Historic whaling has heavily impacted several species inhabiting these waters and current comprehensive information about seasonal occurrence and distribution is lacking for all species. This study presents year-round passive acoustic monitoring data from ten sites in this understudied region. The three most offshore sites were examined for baleen whale vocalisations, and four species were regularly detected. Fin whale detections peaked from October to January and were at their lowest during May and June. Humpback whale song was detected as early as January but showed a strong seasonal peak in March and April. In contrast, minke whales were detected regularly throughout the year but with a peak in detections from October to November, when sei whales were also detected. All monitoring sites showed frequent occurrence of odontocete echolocation clicks and whistles. Comprised mainly of delphinid vocalisations, whistles and clicks were detected on an almost-daily basis among the offshore sites, with a slight reduction in detections from May to July particularly among the more inshore sites. Ambient sound levels (root-mean-square sounds pressure level; SPL) varied by site and season in relation to species presence, anthropogenic contributions, and environmental conditions. Monthly median SPL across the array varied up to 18 dB within 1/3-octave bands. Abstract

It is critical that tools for assessing potential environmental impacts are, amongst other things, fit to reduce uncertainty and provide sufficient confidence to permit decision. To address collision risk between marine mammals and tidal energy devices a simulation-based approach was developed to create a robust system that can adapt to any typical scenario and include novel device designs and ecological parameters. The approach here makes use of an open-source game-engine, Blender, to simulate a tidal energy device, the animal, and its movement in 3D to calculate collision probabilities. This free-to-use software offers an economical solution, however, the complexity of simulating a 3D environment, and adapting game-design software for the purposes of environmental questions poses challenges such as the time required for simulations to complete and the computing power required (e.g. number of CPU cores). The aim of this current study was to streamline the simulation-based approach and outline a more efficient process so that the time to produce results is greatly reduced. Simulation runtime has been significantly reduced by employing increased parallelisation and enabling running the software on a high-performance computer. The end-to-end runtime was reduced by a factor of 17 to greatly improve efficiency. Further improvements to this simulation-based approach gives industry a greater number of options for robust quantification of collision risk and, consequently this work can aid regulators in making decisions during the consent, and post-consent phases of tidal energy developments.

215. Age variations and population over-coverage : Is low mortality among migrants merely a data artefact?

Abstract

The migrant mortality advantage has been observed extensively, but its authenticity is debated. In particular, concerns persist that the advantage is an artefact of the data, generated by the problems of recording mobility among foreign-born populations. Here, we build on the intersection of two recent developments: the first showing substantial age variation in the advantage-a deep U-shaped advantage at peak migration ages-and the second showing high levels of population over-coverage, the principal source of data artefact, at the same ages. We use event history analysis of Sweden's population registers (2010-15) to test whether this over-coverage can explain age variation in the migrant mortality advantage. We document its U-shape in Sweden and, crucially, demonstrate that large mortality differentials persist after adjusting for estimated over-coverage. Our findings contribute to ongoing debate by demonstrating that the migrant mortality advantage is real and by ruling out one of its primary mechanisms.

Abstract

How immigrants and their families fare after settling in a destination country is a question of great policy relevance. It is increasingly recognized that integration is multidimensional and can only be assessed by taking a long-run perspective, beyond the study of adult immigrants. Because adult immigrant trajectories after arrival may be due to selection or reverse causality, studies of immigrants who migrate as children (G1.5) and the native-born children of immigrants (G2), enable researchers to understand the link between exposure to destination— based on age at arrival or generational status—and individual integration-related outcomes. Prior research suggests that age at arrival is a key determinant of different outcomes that may be seen as markers of integration, but has either focused on single outcomes or outcomes at one stage in life. Here we seek to establish the link between migration background—age at arrival, country of birth and reason for migration—and early adult life course trajectories across multiple domains of life, including education, work, and family formation. We use latent class analysis, generalised linear models and family fixed effects to analyse administrative data for the whole population of Sweden, giving a study population of more than 118,000 members of G1.5 and G2. Results suggest that the descendants of immigrants follow broadly one of four different trajectories: ‘high SES’, ‘medium SES’, ‘low SES’, and ‘early childbearing’, where the latter are a particularly disadvantaged group, especially at younger ages. Increased exposure to Swedish society is associated with increased likelihood of following a more advantaged life course trajectory, even after controlling for family fixed effects. Our study highlights patterns of early adult disadvantage among the children of immigrants and refugees and how they vary across multiple domains of life.

219. The legacy of exile for children of refugees: Inequality and disparity across multiple domains of life

Abstract

While much is known about the lives of refugees, less is known about the lives of their children, particularly with respect to the inequalities that they may face in adulthood. Using longitudinal data for the whole population of Sweden, we study outcomes at age 30 across different domains of life, including: education, earnings, family formation and the receipt of social support for unemployment, housing, or poor health. We make comparisons between Swedish-born children of refugees, Swedish-born children of non-refugee immigrants, Swedish-born children of Swedish-born parents, and foreign-born refugees who arrived as children. We then examine variation by parental country of birth for Swedish-born children of refugees. Our results show that inequalities and disparities are extremely heterogeneous, by outcome, by sex, and by parental background. Despite lower fertility at age 30, Swedish-born children of refugees experience inequalities in earnings, unemployment and housing support. This is true for both women and men, but varies considerably by parental country of birth. Children of refugees from Lebanon or Chile are the most likely to experience disadvantage, in contrast to those with parents from Iran or Poland. Those with two refugee parents fare better than those with one refugee parent and one Swedish-born parent, suggesting that a native-born parent is not necessarily protective against inequality. We find clear evidence of segmented adaptation for the children of refugees, but our findings suggest that adaptation is far from a uniform process, with a much richer picture emerging from a comparison across multiple domains of life.
